11 Biographies That Will Teach You More Than Any Business Book

Sometimes a 360-degree portrait of a real-life person beats general principles for business insight..

Say you're looking for expert guidance on how to advance your career or build a better business. Where do you turn? There are, of course, millions of books  offering advice and abstract principles on every aspect of business. But even after reading them, you may be left thinking, "That all sounds well and good, but what does that actually look like in practice?"

The place to turn, according to one entrepreneur, is biographies. On Twitter recently, founder and CTO Colin Landforce confessed that he's traded in general advice for deeper dives into the lives of past innovators . "I stopped reading business books a while ago. I'm reading history and biographies instead," he tweeted. 

Looking for titles to add to his to-read queue, Landforce asked his 20,000-plus followers to suggest great biographies and memoirs. More than 100 ideas poured in. Landforce helpfully sorted through the suggestions to weed out repetitions and self-promoters, coming up with a final tally of 43 recommendations. 1. The Tycoons by Charles R. Morris

A group biography of four Gilded Age men who created the modern American economy (for better and for worse): Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, and J.P. Morgan. 

2. The Innovators by Walter Isaacson  

The Innovators is celebrated biographer Walter Isaacson's deep dive into the history of the digital revolution, tracing the origins of the internet from its beginnings with Ada Lovelace to the contributions of contemporary visionaries like Tim Berners-Lee and Larry Page. 

3. The Fish That Ate the Whale by Rich Cohen 

This book has nothing to do with fish or whales but is instead "the fascinating untold tale of Samuel Zemurray, the self-made banana mogul who went from penniless roadside banana peddler to kingmaker and capitalist revolutionary," according to Amazon. Booklist insists "it is nearly impossible to put the book down."

4. American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin

This Pulitzer Prize-winning biography traces the life of physicist Robert Oppenheimer from his early career to his work on the Manhattan Project developing the atom bomb to his later misgivings about the impact of his life's work upon the world. 

5. The Power Broker by Robert A. Caro  

Another Pulitzer Prize winner, this biography of New York politician and "master builder" Robert Moses  garnered ecstatic reviews. The Sunday Times called it "simply one of the best nonfiction books in English of the past 40 years." Focused not just on the man but also on the city he remade, the book is "surely the greatest book ever written about a city," according to legendary journalist David Halberstam. 

6. The Ride of a Lifetime by Robert Iger 

Best-selling author Brené Brown had this to say about the former Disney CEO's memoir : "I expected a book written by the person who has led Disney for decades to be defined by both gripping storytelling and deep leadership wisdom. Bob Iger delivers, and then some! The Ride of a Lifetime is leadership gold."

7. The Box by Marc Levinson

A biography of a technology rather than a person, this book by economist Marc Levinson unravels how the rise of container shipping quietly remade our economy and fueled the rise of globalization. 

8. Grinding It Out by Ray Kroc 

 In Grinding It Out , the McDonald's founder explains how he revolutionized the restaurant business at the not-so-tender age of 52 while also opening up about his personal life and philosophy. 

9. Tap Dancing to Work by Carol J. Loomis

This collection of writings from a journalist and longtime friend of Warren Buffett 's charts the rise of Berkshire Hathaway and attempts to explain what about Buffett's character and approach led him to become one of the world's most successful investors. 

10. The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore

Actually a historical novel about the battle between Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, and Nikola Tesla to electrify America, The Last Days of Night was Mark Zuckerberg's pick for his top summer book. Read it for entertainment value as much as historical and business insight.

Stock market today: US stocks edge lower after best day of the year as volatile week wraps up

• US stocks edged lower Friday after the best trading day since November 2022.
• The S&P 500 is down half a percentage point this week amid growing concerns of an economic slowdown.
• Investors are awaiting key inflation readings due next week.

US stocks edged lower on Friday, a day after stocks experienced their best trading day since November 2022.

The strongest day of gains in nearly two years came just two days after stocks experienced their worst trading day since September 2022.

For all of the volatility in markets this week, the S&P 500 is down just half a percentage point, as investors seek direction and juggle prospects of imminent interest rate cuts and the potential for an economic slowdown.

"Over the last few days, we have been reminded that risk-off moves happen quickly and can come from seemingly out of nowhere," Penn Mutual investment analyst Matt Dyer said.

The volatility was sparked by a confluence of risk factors, headlined by the unwind of the yen carry trade and concerns of a misstep by the Federal Reserve following an uptick in the unemployment rate in July.

But as stocks claw back some of the big losses incurred on Monday, the volatility has calmed down, with the stock market's fear gauge, the VIX, falling from an intraday peak of 65 on Monday to just under 24 on Thursday.

Looking ahead to next week, investors will be awaiting key inflation reports, including the Producer Price Index on Tuesday, followed by the Consumer Price Index on Wednesday.

Analysts on Wall Street say they're expecting a modestly stronger consumer inflation reading, but not hot enough to derail the outlook for the Fed to cut interest rates next month.

"We forecast headline CPI rose by 0.3% m/m in July, owing mainly to a pickup in core services inflation and energy prices. This would leave the y/y rate unchanged at 3.0%. Meanwhile, we expect core CPI increased by 0.2% m/m," Bank of America analysts wrote Friday, adding that if data comes in-line with their forecasts, markets will start pricing in fewer rate cuts.

Here's where US indexes stood shortly after the 9:30 a.m. opening bell on Friday:

• S&P 500 : 5,310.83, down 0.17%
• Dow Jones Industrial Average : 39,325.47, down 0.31% (-121 points)
• Nasdaq composite : 16,650.78, down 0.06%

Americans are ‘getting whacked’ by too many laws and regulations, Justice Gorsuch says in a new book

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ordinary Americans are “getting whacked” by too many laws and regulations, Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch says in a new book that underscores his skepticism of federal agencies and the power they wield.

“Too little law and we’re not safe, and our liberties aren’t protected,” Gorsuch told The Associated Press in an interview in his Supreme Court office. “But too much law and you actually impair those same things.”

“Over Ruled: The Human Toll of Too Much Law” is being published Tuesday by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. Gorsuch has received a $500,000 advance for the book, according to his annual financial disclosure reports.

In the interview, Gorsuch refused to be drawn into discussions about term limits or an enforceable code of ethics for the justices, both recently proposed by President Joe Biden at a time of diminished public trust in the court. Justice Elena Kagan, speaking a couple of days before Biden, separately said the court’s ethics code, adopted by the justices last November, should have a means of enforcement .

But Gorsuch did talk about the importance of judicial independence. “I’m not saying that there aren’t ways to improve what we have. I’m simply saying that we’ve been given something very special. It’s the envy of the world, the United States judiciary,” he said.

The 56-year-old justice was the first of three Supreme Court nominees of then-President Donald Trump, and they have combined to entrench a conservative majority that has overturned Roe v. Wade, ended affirmative action in college admissions, expanded gun rights and clipped environmental regulations aimed at climate change, as well as air and water pollution more generally.

A month ago, the Supreme Court completed a term in which Gorsuch and the court’s five other conservative justices delivered sharp rebukes to the administrative state in three major cases, including the decision that overturned the 40-year-old Chevron decision that had made it more likely that courts would sustain regulations. The court’s three liberal justices dissented each time.

Gorsuch also was in the majority in ruling that former presidents have broad immunity from criminal prosecution in a decision that indefinitely delayed the election interference case against Trump. What’s more, the justices made it harder to use a federal obstruction charge against people who were part of the mob that violently attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an effort to overturn Trump’s defeat by Biden in the 2020 election.

Gorsuch defended the immunity ruling as necessary to prevent presidents from being hampered while in office by threats of prosecution once they leave.

The court had to wrestle with an unprecedented situation, he said. “Here we have, for the first time in our history, one presidential administration bringing criminal charges against a prior president. It’s a grave question, right? Grave implications,” Gorsuch said.

But in the book, co-authored by a former law clerk, Janie Nitze, Gorusch largely sets those big issues aside and turns his focus to a fisherman, a magician, Amish farmers, immigrants, a hair braider and others who risked jail time, large fines, deportation and other hardships over unyielding rules.

In 18 years as a judge, including the past seven on the Supreme Court, Gorsuch said, “There were just so many cases that came to me in which I saw ordinary Americans, just everyday, regular people trying to go about their lives, not trying to hurt anybody or do anything wrong and just getting whacked, unexpectedly, by some legal rule they didn’t know about.”

The problem, he said, is that there has been an explosion of laws and regulations, at both the federal and state levels. The sheer volume of Congress’ output for the past decade is overwhelming, he said, averaging 344 pieces of legislation totaling 2 million to 3 million words a year.

One vignette involves John Yates, a Florida fisherman who was convicted of getting rid of some undersized grouper under a federal law originally aimed at the accounting industry and the destruction of evidence in the Enron scandal. Yates’ case went all the way to the Supreme Court, where he won by a single vote.

“I wanted to tell the story of people whose lives were affected,” Gorsuch said.

The book expands on a theme that has run through Gorsuch’s opinions over the years, from his criticism of the Chevron decision back when he served on a federal appeals court in Denver to his statement in May 2023 in which he called emergency measures taken during the COVID-19 crisis that killed more than 1 million Americans perhaps “the greatest intrusions on civil liberties in the peacetime history of this country.”

While Gorsuch has voted with the other conservative justices in most of the court’s momentous cases, he also has joined with the liberals in notable cases, including those in which he wrote the opinion in 2020 that expanded protections against workplace discrimination to LGBTQ people. Gorsuch also has sided with the liberal justices in all the court’s cases involving Native Americans since he joined the court.

Immigration, especially when people fighting deportation have complained they were given inadequate notice about hearings, is another area where he has typically broken with his conservative colleagues.

Gorsuch recently returned from a summer teaching gig in Porto, Portugal, for the George Mason University law school. Last year, he spent two weeks in Lisbon, Portugal, with the same program for which he was paid nearly $30,000, plus meals, lodging and travel.

He will travel to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, later this week to talk about the new book.

The day he met with AP, he said, was the first time in weeks that he put on a tie. He wore a dark blue suit, cowboy boots and a Western-style belt.

He seemed at ease, offering chocolate chip cookies and coffee to visitors and joking with a reporter who talked about an upcoming trip to the New Jersey shore. “Go fly some flags up there,” Gorsuch said, a reference to the controversy over flags, similar to those carried by Jan. 6 rioters, that were flown at homes owned by Justice Samuel Alito and his wife .

Gorsuch is not the only justice rolling out a book this summer. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s memoir, “Lovely One,” will be published next month.

Susan Wojcicki, Former Chief of YouTube, Dies at 56

The business executive helped turn Google into an internet juggernaut and became one of the most prominent women in Silicon Valley.

Susan Wojcicki , who helped turn Google from a start-up in her garage into an internet juggernaut, and who became one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent female executives with her leadership of YouTube, died on Friday. She was 56.

Her death was confirmed by her husband, Dennis Troper, who wrote on Facebook that she had been living with lung cancer for two years. He did not say where she died.

Ms. Wojcicki’s more than two decades with Google began in 1998 in her house in Menlo Park, Calif., part of which she rented to her friends Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the company’s founders. For $1,700 a month, the two used the garage as their office to build the search engine.

Ms. Wojcicki, who had been working at Intel, soon joined Google as one of its earliest employees and was its first marketing manager. Over the years, she reached its executive ranks, becoming Google’s most senior woman employee. She eventually led YouTube, which Google acquired in 2006, and which became one of the world’s largest social media companies.

“She is as core to the history of Google as anyone, and it’s hard to imagine the world without her,” Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, said in a statement .

When she became YouTube’s chief executive in 2014, Ms. Wojcicki was hailed as the most powerful woman in advertising. She had made Google enormously profitable, and she was expected to repeat the trick at YouTube. She led Google’s ad business and played a key role in its acquisition of DoubleClick , an advertising technology company, in 2007.

I was excited to check out the massive space and all of its amenities, including a quiet room where I wanted to take a nap .

Our flight landed just before midnight and the airport was packed with travelers.

Passengers flying first or business class on Qatar Airways or any other Oneworld carrier have complimentary access to the lounge. Lower-tier passengers can purchase access at the entrance.

I was worried about how busy the lounge would feel, but upon entering, I found a tranquil atmosphere.

The layout is a U-shape, and it overlooks The Orchard, the airport's lush indoor tropical garden.

One side of the lounge offers full-service and buffet dining options, including a sushi and salad station. The other side has a coffee bar, beverage station, and various seating areas.

The lounge has various spaces for travelers to wait comfortably.

The lounge can fit 707 passengers and is nearly 8,000 square feet.

It's filled with different seating arrangements, and I also saw family rooms, showers, a smoking room, a game room, a prayer room, a gym, a spa, quiet rooms, and private meeting rooms.

Some lounge amenities, like spa treatments , cost extra.

I was most eager to book and visit one of the lounge's quiet rooms.

To get to the quiet rooms, I stopped at the area's dedicated front desk.

The rooms are first-come, first-served, and the free bookings last for six hours.

According to the airline , these spaces are designed for napping, resting, and reading. When I visited, there were 18 single rooms and six double rooms. Since it was the middle of the night, they were all full when I arrived.

I waited nearby so my travel partner and I would be first in line in case anyone left early. Thankfully, two adjacent single rooms became available after only 15 minutes.

The rooms did feel set up for resting, not for deep sleeping.

I was hoping the room would have a cot or even a basic mattress I could lie on. Unfortunately, there was only a thin chair in a fixed reclined position. A blanket was provided but no pillow.

I wouldn't say anything else in the room could be described as cozy except for that thick, soft blanket.

The chair and environment made me feel like I was in a dentist's office. At least the lights could be turned off here, and no one was pulling teeth.

I ended up in a single room but had the opportunity to view the double. It was essentially the same, except the space was larger, and there were two chairs instead of one.

I found basic amenities in the room.

Visitors weren't allowed to eat in the rooms, but the space had a small refrigerator and complimentary bottled water.

There are no restrooms or showers in this quiet area: Those must be accessed in the main lounge.

The quiet rooms didn't feel super secure because the sliding doors to get in didn't appear to have locks, but nappers also have the option to store their luggage at a separate secure counter if they're worried.

I struggled to get comfortable but I eventually fell asleep.

Because the chair was immovable and designed with a curve, sleeping on my side didn't feel possible.

As a side sleeper , I eventually ended up moving to the floor to get more comfortable. I folded the blanket up several times to lie on it and used my backpack as a pillow.

I could hear some noises outside my room, but to be fair, the room is billed as "quiet," not "silent."

My room was next to a staff door I heard opening several times an hour, and the airport intercom recordings were faint but consistent. I didn't hear any conversations, phone alerts, or other more annoying sounds.

Earplugs were also provided to alleviate the noise.

Later, I enjoyed other amenities of the lounge, including breakfast

After about four hours of somewhat unsatisfactory snoozing, I freshened up and rejoined the main area of the lounge.

As the sun began to rise, the light streamed through the massive lounge windows and illuminated the space.

I sat at one of the few open tables in the restaurant section of the lounge and had avocado toast with poached eggs and mimosas for breakfast.

The service in the lounge was excellent, and I loved all of the natural light.

The quiet rooms weren't the best, but they were better than gate seating — or even the main area of the lounge.

The quiet room is a fine place to relax for six hours during a layover in Doha, but I'd tell other visitors not to expect the most comfortable sleep of their lives.

The quiet room's chair wasn't nearly as comfortable as the lie-flat seats in Qatar Airways' epic business class, where the seat is adjustable and the crew can provide a mattress pad and pillow.

If they were, I would've had a much better rest. Next time, I'd sleep more on the plane and take extra time to enjoy the lounge's other wonderful amenities.
