The site focuses on books that are not only enjoyable to read, with great characters and storylines, but that also leave the reader knowing something about the world they did not before. Online Book Club’s FAQ begins with a warning for all aspiring book reviewers: “First of all, this is not some crazy online get-rich-quick scheme. You won't get rich and you won't be able to leave your day job.”

A typical review for U.S. Review of Books is anywhere between 250 and 300 words. They are looking particularly for informed opinions and professionalism in reviews, along with succinctness. 7. Women’s Review of Books

Women’s Review of Books is a long-running, highly-respected print publication that’s a part of Wellesley Centers for Women. This feminist magazine has been published for 36 years and is looking for more book reviewers to join their force.

If you plan on writing reviews for Women’s Review of Books , you should be aware that its reviews are published “in the service of action and consciousness.” Most of its writers are also academics, journalists, or book reviewers with some years of experience behind them. If you meet these qualifications and are accepted, you’ll be compensated $100 per review.

Note that they do have clear instructions on what qualifies as a review, so do read their guidelines carefully before applying to make sure you can meet them. For instance, the review must be at least 250 words, you must allow at least 3 days between reviews submitted, and it must provide helpful feedback for the author. There are also a limited number of paid reader positions available.

If you’re a freelancer, you’re probably already familiar with Upwork! One of the biggest marketplaces for freelancers, Upwork has fingers in every industry’s pie. So it won’t be a surprise to learn that people who are looking for freelance book reviewers regularly post listings on its marketplace.

Because each job caters to an individual client, the requirements and qualifications will differ. It might be a one-time project, or the gig might turn into a long-running collaboration with the client. Generally, the listing will specify the book’s genre, so you’ll know what you’re getting before you agree to collaborate with the client on the other end.

NewPages.com is an Internet portal to small presses, independent publishers and bookstores, and literary magazines. More importantly, they’re looking for short book reviews (generally between 100 and 200 words) on any recent literary magazine or book that you’ve read.

Publishers Weekly is an online magazine focused on international book publishing and all that that entails. More pertinently, it regularly reviews both traditionally published and self-published books, which means that it does occasionally have a call for book reviewers. As of right now, it’s closed to applications — but if you check its Jobs page every once in a while, you might see an opening again.

13. Tyndale Blog Network

Tyndale Blog Network runs a program called My Reader Rewards Club, which is based on an innovative rewards system. If you join as a member, you can earn points for certain actions that you take on the site (for instance, inviting a friend to the program and sharing a direct link to MyReaderRewardsClub.com on Facebook each fetches you 10 points).

Writing a review for a Tyndale or NavPress book on Amazon or Barnes & Noble gets you 10 points, with a maximum limit of 50 points in 30 days. Booklist is the American Library Association’s highly respected review journal for librarians. Luckily for freelance writers, Booklist assigns freelance book reviews that vary from blog posts for The Booklist Reader to published book review in Booklist magazine.

As the site itself suggests, it’s important that you’re familiar with Booklist Publication’s outlets (which include Booklist magazine, the quarterly Book Links , and The Booklist Reader blog) and its writing style. 15. Instaread

Not interested in writing critical takes on the books that you read? Then Instaread might be for you. Instaread has an open call for book summaries, which recap “the key insights of new and classic nonfiction.”

Each summary should be around 1000 to 1500 words, which makes it a fair bit lengthier than your average flash book review. However, Instaread will compensate you heartily for it: as of 2019, Instaread pays $100 for each summary that you write. 16. NetGalley

If you’ve dreamt about becoming an influencer in the book reviewing community, you may want to give NetGalley a look. Put simply, NetGalley is a service that connects book reviewers to publishers and authors. Librarians, bloggers, booksellers, media professionals, and educators can all sign up to NetGalley to read books before they’re published.

How it works is pretty simple. Publishers put digital review copies out on NetGalley for perusal, where NetGalley’s members can request to read, review, and recommend them. It’s a win-win for both publisher and reviewer: the publisher is able to find enthusiastic readers to provide an honest review for their books, and the reviewer gets access to a vast catalog of books.

Writerful Books is an author services company that provides everything from beta reading to (you guessed it) book reviewing. As such, they’re always on the lookout for book reviewers with fresh and compelling voices.  

One of the benefits of this gig is that you can review any book that you want for them (although they prefer contemporary award-winning American, Australian, British, Canadian, Irish, and New Zealand authors). I've been testing out different ways to make money online for years. And in that time, I've been paid for writing countless reviews as a freelance writer, as well as by different companies and paid review platforms.

1. Start A Review-Based Blog

I want to include blogging as a way to write reviews for money because, in my opinion, this is the most sustainable method out of everything I have listed.

Starting your own blog and growing an audience, while difficult and time consuming, can present a lot of money making opportunities.

It didn't take me too long to create a $100/month blog. And these days, WebMonkey makes over $20k a month between Mediavine display ads and affiliate marketing .

In fact, my blog made $272,000 in 2022 , so this is personal proof that you can get paid to write reviews. And if you enjoy writing content in a niche that is popular for influencer marketing, you can definitely start making money with product or service reviews.

Just take a look at this review-based blog, WireCutter, down below. They write in-depth product guides and reviews about things like electronics and appliances, and the website earns commissions if readers end up purchasing the products they review.

Now here's the funny thing about Fiverr and Amazon when it comes to writing reviews for money: Amazon actually sued over 1,000 fake Fiverr review writers in the past for this sort of stunt.

Fiverr used to be inundated with fake review offers, and while Fiverr fully complied with Amazon and banned sellers/restricted those sorts of gigs, there are plenty of people still trying to make a quick buck :

Some of these gigs even have the word ‘Amazon' in them, which I think is pretty damn funny considering the past lawsuit.

Anyway, Fiverr has a healthy mix of product, book, and Amazon review offerings, and while a lot of sellers are vying for free merchandise in exchange for their work, some clearly expect cash for a quick Amazon review or 5 star rating.

6. Private Facebook Groups

While Fiverr used to be the place to go if you wanted to write reviews for money, private Facebook groups are much more popular these days, especially for paid Amazon reviews .

A quick search of ‘Amazon Review Groups' in my search bar brought up plenty of budding communities of reviewers, and hundreds of posts are made in these groups on a daily basis:

As you can see, reviewers either get free products, massive discounts, or monetary compensation for providing positive feedback. Some groups require their members to be Amazon Sellers, but most don't.

This whole method definitely feels like an underground way to earn with review writing, and it honestly is, but this is the name of the game these days it would seem!

7. Local Classifieds

While this option to get paid to write reviews isn't as common, a search of ‘Amazon review' or ‘product review' on your local classifieds like Kijiji or Craigslist can turn up postings that offer free or discounted products in return for a favorable review.

Just check out the offer I found in my city on Kijiji : It gives you a free LED tape light strip if you test it and leave a review.

I have no idea if this is a scam or not, but these sorts of listings pop up pretty regularly. They do violate the terms and service from my understanding so they get taken down just as frequently, but hey, maybe there is some cash or freebies to be found here.

8. TryProducts

Anotjher way you can snag free stuff is to try product review gigs with companies like TryProducts.com .

With TryProducts, you get free merchandise and everyday essentials sent to you for free. You then write a review/piece of feedback to help the brand improve its products.

TryProducts works with over 300 brands to give its members free stuff. Examples of products you can get in exchange for your reviews include:

• Beauty products
• Baking supplies
• Outdoor gear

This is a similar concept to companies like PINCHme , although it's only available in the United States. You won't get rich with this site either. But it's an easy way to score free stuff which is basically making money for writing reviews.

9. Capterra Software Reviews

When it comes to the world of software reviews, Capterra is one of the largest players out there. From cloud computing to accounting software, Capterra is a one-stop-shop for everything you need to know when making a purchase decision on software.

Like all review-based websites, it's the user submitted content that actually creates value. Since Capterra is interested in compiling as many great reviews as possible from real customers to make more money (through affiliate/lead generation deals), they are willing to pay for reviews.

Now here's the thing: Capterra makes it very clear in their guidelines that they vet reviews and  only pay for reviews that pass approval.

When reviewing on Capterra, you verify your identity through LinkedIn, and as this Reddit thread describes , you might have to send screenshots of the software you are using/further proof you have real experience.

Regardless, if you frequently use software for work/school or are decent with language and can paraphrase other reviews, writing reviews on Capterra for money seems like an easy flow of $10 gift cards.

10. Kirkus Reviews

Kirkus was actually founded in 1933, and the Kirkus Reviews magazine is a successful magazine that brings the latest and greatest book reviews to readers around the world.

Kirkus is also currently looking for experienced book reviewers of English or Spanish works, and you can apply for the job on their website.

Just note, reviews are generally around 350 words and are expected to be completed 2 weeks following a book assignment, so slow readers should shy away from this one!

11. Gartner Peer Insights

Gartner is another popular software/technology review website, and like Capterra, the only way Gartner can provide value is through continuing to grow their list of user reviews and resources.

Like Capterra, Gartner is also willing to pay users to review software and offers a rate of $25 per verified review and a total of 10 reviews per year .

So, if you actually use a lot of software, this could be a decent way to make an additional $250 a year without much problem. Similarly, if you are looking for a new side hustle idea and don't have any ethical qualms about paraphrasing, you could probably make a quick buck anyway.

This Reddit thread breaks down some payment proof and tips for writing reviews on Gartner, and you should note that you need a business email address  to work for this program…No Gmail or Outlook.

12. ApperWall

I'm using Apperwall for an example of how you can make money by reviewing apps or games but this website is really one amidst a sea of other sketchy platforms that sort of work.

The premise behind Apperwall is simple: create and verify your account/phone, and then earn money for downloading and reviewing specific apps.

Apperwall and similar websites generally pay out between $0.25-$1.50 for accepted reviews, but the main issue with these platforms is that they tend to come and go.

Writing fake reviews is against the Google PlayStore or App Store terms of service, so these companies rarely have a smooth ride. However, if you do a bit of research or even try out Apperwall for yourself, you might be able to make some decent side income in your spare time.

Online Book Club is exactly what it sounds like…An online book club.

On OBC, the process is simple. Each day a free or heavily discounted e-book will be announced, and users have the opportunity to read and review (if they wish) the book.

While most readers will probably not make money for their reviews, the most popular reviews can earn up to $50, and at the very worst this is just a straightforward way to get a bunch of free e-books every year.

If you want to get paid to write book reviews, there are plenty of other options publications or websites out there currently hiring reviewers, including:

Just keep in mind, a lot of these publications are very competitive, so don't expect easy money from the world of online book reviews!

15. Start A YouTube Channel

Alright, I know this isn't exactly a way to write reviews for cash, but the premise is the exact same.

If you're an expert on something, you might be able to share your opinion for it on the internet and to basically get paid to give advice .

If you've ever searched for a product/service review on YouTube, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Hell, you don't even have to be an expert. After all, channels like Ryan ToyReview grossed more than 20 million in revenue in 2018 , and the channel is run by a kid.

Granted, you probably won't become the next Ryan, but if you have a passion for a niche you can probably take a crack at YouTube or blogging just to see how things turn out. You might be surprised at the results after a few months of hard work!

16. Try Slice The Pie

While Slice The Pie isn't my cup of tea, it's another way you can make money writing music and product reviews if you're completely out of options.

In a nutshell, Slice The Pie lets you review :

• Accessories
• Various other products where you give overall brand feedback

Music is the most popular, and you have to listen to new tracks for at least 90 seconds and write a decent review. You don't earn much per review, maybe a few pennies to $0.05 to $0.10 at  most , and it takes $10 to cash out with PayPal.

But, if you're out of options and want to get paid to listen to music , you could check it out.

Can You Get Paid To Write Fake Reviews?

Yes, you can get paid to write fake reviews since companies are willing to pay people for favorable reviews. This is especially true for ecommerce websites or brands selling on websites like Amazon. However, you can get banned for this, and it's not the sort of job that usually pays a lot of money .

Additionally, search engines and marketplaces like Amazon are getting better at detecting fraud, and they are also making an effort to remove and ban fake reviewers from their platforms because it detracts from their reliability.

If you are actually serious about making money through review writing, you will probably have to spend many hours of unpaid work building up history on your Amazon, Google, Yelp, or whatever other account you will be using .

I suggest remaining honest and only writing reviews for products or services you use, but hey, do whatever you have to do .

Additionally, you might want to have backup accounts at the ready in case you get banned or your reviews just automatically get flagged as spam.

In my opinion, the best way to gain from writing reviews is to ask for free products in exchange for reviews, or to create your own blog that is in a very narrow niche and to pitch sponsored posts to companies.

At the end of the day, I think fraudulent reviews are never going to disappear , and you can definitely use review writing to make extra money on the side, but I wouldn't bank on this one for a long term, life-sustaining hustle.

What's The Best Way To Get Started?

In my opinion, starting a review-based blog is the best way to get paid to write reviews.This is because blogging is a long-term strategy where you can build a brand people trust and turn to in order to find info about various products and services.

My blog is an example of this. I made $22,000 blogging in 2020 , and in 2021, WebMonkey earned $92,000 . I then earned nearly $300,000 in 2022.

App reviews and side hustle reviews have always been a massive part of my content strategy. So, this is a real-life example of how you can start writing reviews for money and turn it into a full-time job.

There are also  so  many ways to monetize your review blog. Affiliate links are the obvious example, but you can also run ads with companies like Monumetric or Mediavine. Additionally, starting a blog opens the door for sponsored posts, selling your own products, and coaching.

This is just my opinion, but if you want a long-term strategy, I definitely recommend starting your own blog!

In particular, businesses like it when people review them. Reviews draw people’s attention and provide companies with valuable feedback. Of course, if they happen to be positive reviews, that’s even better.

That’s why many businesses pay freelance writers to review their products or services. This can be a great way to earn a few extra bucks (and potentially get some free stuff out of the deal). There are five main ways to get started writing reviews for money.

01. Search on freelance and traditional job boards

When you want to make money writing any type of content, your first step should usually be to look for paid gigs on online job boards. Reviews are no exception to this.

There are two types of platforms you should check out:

Freelance job boards

There are several websites explicitly aimed at freelancers, including:

On these sites, you can get paid for reviewing products and services of all types, from apps and gadgets to clothes and beauty products.

Note that these sites are used by millions of freelancers from all over the world, and there’s a lot of competition from people offering to work for low rates. As such, you may have to sift through a lot of low-paying jobs before you find ones worth applying to.

Traditional job sites and local classified ads

You can also sometimes find paid reviewing work on mainstream job sites (ones that aren’t exclusively targeted at freelancers). Check out:

• Flexjobs (this site focuses on remote and part-time work)

You can also check local job boards on sites like Craigslist and ClassifiedAds.com .

02. Sign up for dedicated product review websites

There are several websites that are specifically dedicated to reviews of products and services.

Some of these will pay you to write for them—although they generally won’t pay you very much. You can use them to earn a couple of extra bucks here and there, but for more lucrative gigs, you’ll eventually want to develop relationships with actual clients.

Look into these platforms:

Reviews of consumer products and software

• ReviewStream : This site will pay you for reviews about all kinds of products, from baby items to electronics. Your review should be honest, and it has to be for something you’ve actually used. According to online reports, you’re likely to earn around $2–$25 for each review .
• Capterra : This is a website where you can review software and get paid for it (as long as you follow their guidelines ). They don’t specify how much you’ll be paid for each review, but many reports claim that it’s around $10 .
• SoftwareJudge : As the name suggests, this is another site that will pay you to review software. The website says that you can earn up to $50 per review .
• G2 : This is yet another software review platform. However, this site won’t pay you in cash —only in gift cards.

Books and music reviews

If you’re an avid reader or a music nut, there are plenty of sites that will pay you for reviews. Look into:

• Online Book Club : This is an online community for book lovers. You can join for free and earn money by reading and reviewing books. According to the site, payouts are usually $5–$60 per review .
• Reedsy Discovery : This is another site where you can post book reviews, but you won’t get paid by the site directly . Instead, readers can tip you for your work ($1, $3, or $5).
• Slicethepie : This started out as a music review website, but now it also lets you review commercials, fashion items, and accessories. Although you’ll get paid for this, rumor has it that you only get a few cents per review , so you should only do it if you really enjoy it.
• PlaylistPush : This is a community you can join to earn money for reviewing songs from new artists—up to $15 per review . However, the site says that you need to have a Spotify playlist with “REAL organic followers.” In other words, you need to be somewhat influential in this space before you can get paid.
• Urban Flaiire : This site features short music reviews of 150–160 words, primarily in the hip-hop, RnB, eclectic, chill wave, pop, and urban genres. This is another site that won’t pay you directly but that does have a system that facilitates readers tipping you.

03. Pitch reviews to magazines and websites

Instead of hunting for work on job boards, you can also take a more traditional approach and pitch your review ideas to magazines and websites. This usually has considerably higher earning potential than writing for the sites listed in the previous section.

Here are a few publications you can try:

• Listverse : This is a site that publishes lists of everything under the sun. They have many “top 10” lists with reviews of music, movies, books, and more. They’ll pay you $100 if they publish one of your lists.
• Shvoong : Shvoong calls itself a “knowledge-sharing platform.” The site publishes reviews on an eclectic array of topics—it currently features reviews of restaurants, mattresses, and laptop sleeves, to give a few examples. According to online reports, they don’t pay their writers a set rate, but instead pass on a fraction of their advertising revenue .
• Cineaste : This is a quarterly magazine for people interested in cinema. They publish book reviews, film reviews, and DVD or Blu-ray reviews (both of new and vintage/classic films), among other things. Payment is $18–$45 , depending on the type of review.
• VAN : This is a classical music magazine that pays for reviews and other types of writing about the classical music world. They specify that they pay, but not how much .
• Bitch Media : This colorfully named publication offers a feminist perspective on contemporary culture. They accept all types of articles, including reviews. If you can offer a feminist analysis of a film, television show, album, or other work, this publication pays quite well, at $250–$1000 per article .
• Contingent Magazine : This online magazine publishes articles about history, including (but not limited to) reviews of books, films, museum exhibits, and television shows. They pay $250+ per review .
• Screen Rant : This is a very popular entertainment website that publishes reviews of movies, video games, comics, and TV shows. They don’t clearly indicate how much they pay , but they’re on the lookout for regular contributors, and you have the potential to work for them on a full-time basis.
• Cultured Vultures : This UK-based website features reviews of video games and movies. Their base rate of £5 per article (equivalent to about $6 ) is fairly low, but you’ll receive a bonus for every 200 views your reviews get.
• Kirkus Media : Kirkus is a magazine that accepts pitches for book reviews. Their website doesn’t specify how much they pay; some reports suggest it might be around $50 per article .
• The US Review of Books : This publication accepts work from freelance book reviewers. When you apply to write for them , you’ll need to attach your resume, a few writing samples, and two or more references. Their site also doesn’t clearly indicate their rates, but other sources suggest they pay $25–$75 per book review .

Depending on the publication you pick, your earning potential with this route can be fairly high.

The downside is that you’ll normally have to send out a lot of pitches before you get any success, and you’ll need a good portfolio (which won’t be necessary with the review sites listed in the previous section).

04. Sign up for survey sites

There are a number of websites that will pay you to take surveys and review products.

Note that these sites don’t pay very much, and they also don’t put much of a focus on your actual writing . Some of their surveys have no written component at all, and to earn a significant amount of money, you’ll have to complete a lot of surveys very quickly, without much time to express yourself.

Still, this type of work is close enough to writing reviews that it might be worth investigating, as long as you keep your expectations modest. Look into these sites:

• LifePoints : This is a website that pays users to complete surveys (e.g., giving your opinion about products you’ve used). Completing surveys earns points, which can then be exchanged for cash or gift cards.
• InboxDollars : This website has many different ways to earn cash, such as taking part in surveys. You can also watch ads and read emails consisting of marketing materials from brands.
• Swagbucks : Like InboxDollars, Swagbucks will pay you to take surveys (and complete other small tasks, e.g., watching ads or playing games). You can also get paid for writing product reviews, which can make a nice side gig, as you’ll get free products and also earn points or rewards.
• Crowdtap : Crowdtap pays for various tasks, including taking surveys and writing product reviews. As with Swagbucks, you’ll get a free product and also earn points or rewards when you take part.

05. Put reviews on your own blog or social media profile

If you have a blog with a sizable readership, companies might be willing to pay you to review their products on it.

This is the option with the highest earning potential, but the barrier to entry is very high, since this will only work if you’re already quite popular and successful.

To monetize your reviews, you can:

• Add affiliate links: Affiliate links enable you to earn money for promoting a product or service; you’ll get paid when people click them. One easy way to get started with affiliate links is to join Amazon Associates —a free program that lets you recommend products on your blog in exchange for commissions.
• Put ads on your blog: You can use programs like Google Adsense or Media.net to do this.
• Just write reviews for money: You can also agree to write a review in exchange for direct payment. There are websites that connect businesses with bloggers who are open to this. Check out ReviewMe.com , PayPerPost , and Valued Voice .

Note that you don’t need to go through a middleman if you don’t want to. You could just contact businesses directly and offer to review their products, or sell them ad space on your blog.

If you have a popular fitness blog, for example, try contacting gyms, personal trainers, or sportswear stores.

Social media reviews

In addition to bloggers, businesses often want social media personalities to review their products. If you have a following on Instagram, Facebook, or another social media platform, you can explore this option.

Below are a few sites you can check out that connect social media influencers with brands:

If you have a lot of followers, you can also put affiliate links on your social media channels. You can write reviews on Facebook or Twitter, for example, and get paid when people use your links to buy products.

06. How to protect yourself when writing reviews for money

Writing reviews is a good way to make money from the comfort of your own home. You don’t need any special credentials to do it; you just need a computer with an internet connection and you’re ready to go.

However, there are a few points to bear in mind if you’re thinking of trying it:

• Watch out for scams: You should never have to send money or share credit card details to write a review or sign up for a review platform. If you get asked for money or any sensitive information, it’s probably a scam. Be careful, and watch out for obvious red flags (e.g., other reviews on the website that appear to be fake).
• Time is money: Some review-writing gigs have higher earning potential than others. Monitor how long you’re spending on each review for the platform or publisher you’re writing for. If it’s taking you forever and you’re only earning a few cents, consider a different avenue. No matter what you do, you’re unlikely to get rich from writing reviews, but it should at least be worth your time.
• Be careful about writing fake reviews: Freelancer sites like Upwork and Fiverr often feature job ads asking for fake reviews (i.e., giving products that you’ve never used 5 stars). For example, if your site pays $5 per review and there’s a $50 payout threshold, you’ll have to write 10 reviews to get any money. People sometimes complain that overly high thresholds make it hard to get paid, so watch out for this when you’re looking for review-writing opportunities.

Amazon is the biggest online marketplace for everything under the sun.

From clothes to home improvement tools, it is very rare to not find an item you’re looking for on Amazon.

Consumers have welcomed online shopping on Amazon wholeheartedly.

Manufacturers and resellers know this. Some even pay to get their products reviewed to rig the system.

Why are paid reviews so in demand?

Well, Amazon ranks products based on the number of positive reviews.

Buyers usually look at reviews when buying items on the site, too! So if a seller is new to the marketplace, some of them pay to “get the ball rolling.”

I know it sounds sketchy, but these writing gigs do exist.

And even if Amazon has been trying to catch review mills and fake review writers, there are still people doing it (and companies paying them cash in exchange for these reviews.)

• Facebook groups – Your best bet in finding Amazon review writing gigs is by searching through FB groups. They’re not even hiding; just one search and you’ll find several groups with over 10k members.

These Facebook groups have thousands of people who exchange products (or cash) to review stuff on Amazon.

Getting paid to write reviews for Amazon products is definitely an underground writing gig, but those who work as a web content writer consider this just like any ordinary writing assignment.

Of course, there’s an ethical dilemma when choosing this kind of work/

Are you okay with faking a 5-star review in exchange for cash, even if you didn’t spend a cent on that item (or at least tried it out first)?

As for Amazon, the company knows this is going on.

In fact, in 2015, the company went after over 1,100 Fiverr users with a lawsuit for promoting their “Amazon review” offers.
