How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

Potential Drawbacks of Booking.com

  • Cancellation Policies Vary: While many properties offer free cancellation, this is not universal. Be sure to carefully read the cancellation policy before booking to avoid any unexpected fees.
  • Overwhelming Number of Options: The sheer volume of listings on Booking.com can be overwhelming, especially if you're not sure what you're looking for. Using the filtering tools effectively is key to narrowing down your options.
  • Booking Fees: Although Booking.com itself doesn't charge a booking fee, some properties may include additional fees, such as resort fees or taxes, which are not always immediately apparent. Be sure to review the total cost before finalizing your booking.

Is Booking.com Worth It?

Booking.com is an excellent resource for travelers of all types. Its vast selection, user-friendly interface, and verified reviews make it a go-to platform for booking accommodations. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, Booking.com offers the tools and options to help you find the perfect place to stay.

Booking.com also offers a loyalty program to reward frequent travelers. Their Genius loyalty program is designed to give traveler’s exclusive perks. However, as with any booking platform, it's essential to do your research and read the fine print. Make sure to review the cancellation policies, total costs, and guest reviews to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Booking.com cancelled my holiday because my credit card expired.

Booking.com automatically cancelled my holiday simply because my credit card registered on booking.com expired. No email or text telling me to update my details. Just an automated email at 00.01am today, three weeks before holiday, telling me my booking had been cancelled. Especially outrageous considering I was due to pay the hotel directly when I arrived - no payment was due to be made to Booking.com.

Quality & Reliable Booking.com

We regularly use Booking.com to book apartments, hotels, and more recently a villa for our family holidays. There’s so much choice, with really competitive prices. We love being able to check out the locations and details of each accommodation, and often our dates are determined by flights so flexibility is really important. Booking.com is so easy to use and we have comfort that, once booked and paid, everything will be ready for us - as already detailed and confirmed - when we arrive to have a fab holiday!

Horrendous customer service for changed flights

When your flight gets changed by the flight company, you cannot manage your booking through them, you have to do it through booking. You get a message from this third party "Gotogate" giving you the options which all include "get in touch with us" but no contact whatsoever. On Booking.com's website, they direct you to a chat system that doesn't work. Absolute crap.

Whilst trying to find a bus route in…

Whilst trying to find a bus route in Scotland through Rome2rio.com, Booking.com constantly keeps popping up with accommodation which I don't need. So my journey couldn't be plotted. Are you that desperate to get rid of those accommodations ?? Thank you Booking.com.

If I could supply no stars I would

If I could supply no stars I would. A truly hideous company who offer no support to us partners who work ‘with them’… such a shame that they dominate booking traffic as they present constant problems and barriers and are a law to themselves. Please avoid them when booking anywhere and book direct. They take money and squeeze small businesses. They then try to dominate bookings whilst then dumping all the problems on the ‘partners’ who have had their prices driven down whilst they take nearly 20% of your revenue. They override your policies and supply inaccurate information to the end customer who as a result is often confused. It needs calling out. Parasites.

No one should be booing through this Web site . It is a total scam. It charges exorbitant amount which higher than direct accessing to motels/hotels etc. The accommodation I booked not suitable to stay. It is part of a shop just converted to a short term rental

No one should be booking through this…

No one should be booking through this Website. It is a total scam. The accommodation I booked was a 4 star hotel in Booking.com, but when we arrived, it was a poor condition Bed & Breakfast. Obviously, we need to get another acommodation to stay that nigth, and Booking didn't take over. Please be careful and verify the information showed in this website, there are a lot of times it is not real.

BEWARE DO NOT USE BOOKING.COM I used them to make a reservation at a motel but then needed to cancel so just 2 days after I made the reservation I called the motel and cancelled with no problem however, they said since I booked thru booking.com they had to refund me my money long story short after 2 months of constantly sending emails and calling booking I still have not received my refund or heard anything from booking.com I even called the better business bureau and still haven't heard anything.

I have been using Booking since 2011

I have been using Booking since 2011, both in Italy and abroad and I never had any problem. The hotels always were as described, and in one case Booking gave me an upgrade free of cherge because the hotel denied our room (before we traveled).

I like booking very much

I like booking very much. I can cancel part of it for free. It's well arranged👍, and it won't waste resources when the plan changes. Hasn't the recent promotion of Genius Level 2 membership been implemented? I'm Caiying Su, not Bizhen Wu.

Booking.com and some Swedish flight…

Booking.com and some Swedish flight sales company used my booking.com wallet money to book a flight and I got no confirmation emails whatsoever. Now I cannot reach anybody about this. Is this a manner of taking back the wallet money of genius clients? Why no emails? Is this a scam? How can you ever collect WALLET rewards of trust booking.com with CREDIT CARD information in the future?

The app has changed a lot.

The app has changed a lot.. years ago I received an email if there was any trouble with my credit card… now my reservation was cancelled and I received no notification… also free cancellation was really free now a hotel charged me 1month before my trip.. not so happy

Forced to cancel our booking despite…

Forced to cancel our booking despite the problem being Booking.com fault. No customer support. Did not apologise. No gesture of good will. Made the customer do the running round. An excellent example of how not to do business. Speaks volumes of leadership at every level in the business.

For your own sake never use this site

For your own sake never use this site. They took over €600 from my account, saying I didn't cancel a booking when clearly on their site I had. Absolutely terrible customer service, robot staff when I finally got through and address not found message when returning emails. Absolutely disgusting behaviour from this company.

Absolute joke of a company

Absolute joke of a company. DO NOT USE. We arrived at our apartment which had been advertised as a stunning flat with pool only to find out the entire block is under renovation including the pool which was closed. We were forced to move into another hotel and Booking.com are REFUSING to help us with a refund after e-mailing and phoning them continually for 3 weeks. Disgrace of a company. With never use them again.

BOOKING.COM MISINFORMED US ABOUT THIS ACCOMODATION AND CHARGED US 3 TIMES THE PRICE WITHOUT CHECKING REVIEWS AND ACCOMODATION

We got a very bad hotel for a price of a 3 star hotel Being a pilot , seen hundreds of hotels , this is the worst Very dirty, bad smelling, no clearing Bad bed cushions, no ventilatie, a big mess in and outside the profeet At the same time we had 3 other hotels for about €60 each This costed more than €110 and even no breakfast feeling being prisoned Maximum a bed & breakfast categorie without breakfast Booking.com did not put this accommodation in the good section of hotels and did not check despite more bad reviews The maximum price for this is €40 We claim Booking.com for misinforming

They are just waste of time and money /…

They are just waste of time and money / when comes to good customer services they just sucks - now that I have a dispute with MICROTEL BY WYNDHYAM and booked through booking.com and the refund and $100 fee which was paid - nothing has been refunded- like the hotel they are also doing nothing- stop trusting these people

I tried to change the flight

I tried to change the flight, but it took over an hour, and the tech support agent barely understood English and copied and pasted useless responses. I'm not sure I even got to do what I was trying to do; all I got was that they would send the request somewhere higher in the chain. A simple yes or no answer took over an hour to accomplish, and you never get anything but a boilerplate response that they probably store in the text file next to the chat window. It's one of those situations in which ChatGPT would perform better than a real human being. Booking.com hires cheap call/support centers in third-world countries that are more than useless. They waste your time. Better book your hotels and flights directly with the companies. I will stop using booking.com business from now on.

Always a great experience

I always have a great experience making hotel reservations with booking.com. You have the choice to cancel for free if your plans change. Now, your paying for the stay before arriving, but your notified in advance to assure your payment goes through successfully and they let you know.

Absolutely ridiculous company

Absolutely ridiculous company. My mother had booked a hotel through them for two nights in November. We never received a confirmation email so assume that maybe we typed the email in wrong (although they never make you put your email in twice to confirm it is correct) They have taken the £200 but say that we cannot have access to our booking as we have no booking reference. There seems to be absolutely no way of getting the money back, so that is £200 down the drain. Thanks booking.com !!

Booking.com is an online travel agency (OTA) that offers flights, car rentals, attractions , and airport taxis , but its strength is in booking multiple types of accommodations.

In addition to traditional hotels, it offers access to book almost any type of accommodation you could ask for including apartments, hostels, homestays, bed and breakfasts, and villas!

We’ll take you through this website to show you what you need to know to get the best deal, and we’ll discuss how Booking.com’s prices stack up to other OTAs.

Booking.com ‘s strength is in booking unique accommodations for your next trip. In addition to traditional hotels, you can also search for apartments , B&Bs , hostels , villas , resorts , homestays, and even boats! You will be able to see everything that’s available through the main search box.

However, we found this site to be inconsistent when searching for accommodations — the results screens showed up in a few different formats with no real rhyme or reason to the differences. We’ll walk you through the basic features of searching for accommodations, but keep in mind that your screen might have a different layout than the screenshots below.

Booking different map views

How to Search for Stays

Booking.com defaults to the search box for accommodations (otherwise click Stays), so all you need to do is enter your basic search criteria: destination, dates, and number of people. Then click the blue Search button.

Booking.com stays

Hot Tip: Once you start typing your destination, you might get a drop-down box with suggestions — when you click one of these, your results might automatically show on a map. If you don’t see the map but would like to view it, just click the map icon on the left side of your screen. If you prefer a traditional list view, just click Close Map in the upper right corner.

After inputting your basic search criteria, you will see the main results page. This will look pretty familiar if you have ever searched for a flight on an OTA previously.

The main search results are in the middle of the screen with sorting options shown right above. You will be able to sort your results by:

  • Top picks for long stays
  • Show homes first
  • Price (lowest first)
  • Review Score & Price
  • Genius (more on this program later!)
  • Star rating and price
  • Distance From Downtown
  • Top Reviewed

To the left (or at the top) of your screen, you will see a map icon — click this to see all of the properties marked on a map. You can hover over each marker to see which hotel it is. This is a really helpful tool since location tends to be important criterion for most accommodation choices.

Booking.com Accomodation search - view map

Under the map icon (or the search box) at the left are the amazing filtering options offered by Booking.com . You will be able to filter your search by just about any criteria you could think of, including:

  • Popular filters
  • Star ratings
  • Fun things to do
  • Availability
  • Deals and discounts
  • 24-hour front desk
  • Free cancellation
  • Property type (here is where you will find apartments, B&Bs, guesthouses, etc.)
  • Bed preference
  • Review score
  • Facility (property amenities)
  • Room facility (room amenities)
  • Facilities for disabled guests
  • Room accessibility

A note about search results ranking: When you do a search and don’t sort the options (or if you are looking at Booking.com’s Top Picks ), these are sorted based on an algorithm that gives a higher position to providers that pay a higher commission to Booking.com .

While this isn’t unusual,  it’s good to know that the search results aren’t necessarily ranked by the quality of the property.

Hot Tip: If you are a member of a hotel’s loyalty program , you will most likely NOT earn points if you book a room through Booking.com. Any elite status you may have will also likely not be recognized. If earning points and holding elite status are important to you, it’s best to book directly through the hotel’s website.

The map view is one of our favorite tools on Booking.com since location is such an important factor when choosing a place to stay. However, just as with the results page layout, we found it to be a tad quirky.

Sometimes the map showed up alone, and sometimes it had the accommodation list and filtering options with it on the screen. Either way, the map still works the same, and all the accommodation lists and filtering options are always available on the search results page.

Each marker on the map represents a different hotel (or apartment, B&B, etc.). You can hover over each 1 to get more information about the actual accommodation available at that location.

You might notice that some markers have white dots and some have red dots. The red dots indicate a property that is sold out for your chosen dates. You can zoom in or out on the map with the +/- buttons on the lower right side of the map.

Booking.com Accomodation search - map view details

When you get the full map view, you will be able to see a list of all available accommodations in the middle of the screen. If you hover over your selection, you will be able to see where it is located on the map — just look for the bouncing pinpoint. All filtering options are on the left side of the screen.

Choosing Your Stay

The main search results list can be quite overwhelming if you aren’t sure what you’re looking for. Be sure to use as many filtering options as you can to narrow your results .

Each listing gives you a lot of information, including price, location, and rating. Some property types will be easily identifiable, but unfortunately, they aren’t all labeled. We found that apartments, vacation homes, and villas were labeled clearly — but there was no label in the listing for other property types.

So if you’re absolutely sure you want a hotel, be sure to mark that in your filtering options so that you don’t end up with a hostel or B&B by mistake! While these are usually pretty obvious, it’s good to be sure since Booking.com offers such a wide variety of accommodation choices.

Booking.com type of property

How to Book Your Stay

Once you’ve selected the property you want to book, you will need to complete your transaction.

Click the large blue button in the search results box. This box can say different things, like “See our last available rooms” or “Select your apartment” (like above) .

booking.com accommodation detail

This will bring up more details about your chosen accommodation (on a screen that’s somewhat cluttered with information). You will see photos, more information about the area, guest reviews, and hotel highlights. Scroll to the bottom for your booking options. The green writing will tell you what’s different about each price level — often the higher prices include free cancellation. Use the drop-down box under Select Rooms to select the number of rooms you want to book, then click the blue I’ll reserve button at the right.

Booking.com room type detail

Next, confirm the details and fill in your name and email address. Click the blue Next: Final Details button to continue.

Booking.com room booking personal details

On the next page, you will need to fill out your address plus credit card information. Click the blue Complete booking button, and you will receive an email confirmation of your booking. To double-check your cancellation policy or other hotel policies, click on What are my booking conditions?.

Booking.com complete room booking

Cancellation Policy

Booking.com does not have a blanket cancellation policy; each booking comes with its own rules and regulations.

Be sure to check your booking before submitting your payment so that you are aware of the cancellation policy. Some special prices require upfront payment and do not offer free cancellation.

Price Match Guarantee

Booking.com’s price match guarantee only applies to accommodations on the site — it can’t be used for other services like flights or car rentals.

One nice thing about Booking.com’s policy is that you have up until 24 hours before your check-in to submit a claim . Most other OTAs only price match within 24 hours of booking.

To be valid, the lower-priced accommodation must be online and available when checked by Booking.com. The lower price needs to be for the exact same booking in every way: same property and accommodation type, same check-in and check-out dates, and the same cancellation policy.

The lower price will not be honored in the case of an opaque booking (where the exact property isn’t revealed until the booking is complete), if it’s part of a loyalty or rewards program, or if it’s a special promotion or deal.

To submit a claim, look for Found this room cheaper somewhere else? on your confirmation page, or go to View all bookings in your account . If you don’t have a Booking.com account, you can log in with your booking number and PIN. Or just contact customer service to submit your claim.

Bottom Line: Booking.com’s Price Match Guarantee is generous — you can submit a claim up to 24 hours before check-in! All details of the reservation must be identical, and the lower rate must be online and available when Booking.com checks.

Price Comparisons — Stays

Ok, so now let’s get to the important part: how Booking.com’s prices compare to other sites!

As a test, we priced out a week-long stay at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, AZ, and compared prices head to head. Here is what we found:

$3,687.08

$3,687.08

$3,687.08

Marriott.com — member rate

Marriott.com — non-member rate

$3,687.07

$3,687.08

$3,654.84

In this example, you could save $91.65 by booking a member rate through Marriott’s own website. Priceline was the next cheapest, saving $32.24 over Booking.com.

Another important note is that if you purchased this hotel stay through Orbitz, you would be earning $102.29 in Orbucks (Orbitz’s Rewards program currency).

One thing to keep in mind is if you belong to any hotel loyalty program , you likely will not earn hotel rewards when you book through Booking.com. In this example, any Marriott Bonvoy member would be better off booking directly.

Now let’s take a look at a smaller, independent hotel. We priced out a 7-night stay at Hotel 140 in Boston.

Booking.com

$2,341.32

Expedia

$2,341.32

Hotels.com

$2,341.32

Hotel’s website

$2,601.45

Orbitz

$2,341.32

Priceline

$2,341.32

In this example, the hotel’s website was actually $260.13 higher than Booking.com or any of the other OTAs, which all offered the same price.

However, Expedia , Hotels.com , and Orbitz all offer their own rewards programs, so booking on one of those sites might be a better option in this scenario.

Genius Loyalty Program

Booking.com Genius

Booking.com offers a loyalty program with a lifetime membership called Genius .

Level 1 : 2 stays within 2 years

  • 10% discount at select properties

Level 2 : 5 stays within 2 years

  • 10% to 15% discount at select properties
  • Complimentary breakfast on select options
  • Free room upgrade on select options

Properties offering a Genius rate will display a blue badge in the search results designating the distinction.

The Booking.com flight search functionality is through Kayak , which is also under the Booking Holdings Inc. umbrella. It was previously through Vayama , so things might look different now if you’ve used Booking.com to book flights in the past.

Click on Flights in the main menu of Booking.com. Fill out your basic search criteria — origin, destination, dates, and number of travelers. Then click the blue Search button.

Booking.com flights

The search results page looks like many other OTAs. You will find the main results in the middle of the page with filtering options to the left. You can also sort your results by price or trip duration using the drop-down at the left of the page.

Above the filter options, you will also see Our Advice from Kayak that gives its best estimation of how prices might change in the next week and a suggestion to buy now or wait.

Booking.com flight search results

Each search result will display the flight times and price, as usual. Click View Deal to see more details.

Booking.com flight view deal

Depending on which route you’ve chosen, the second View Deal button you click will likely take you to the airline’s website to complete your purchase.

Search for Flexible Dates

You can often save money by shifting your flights backward or forward a day or 2, so it’s great when you can easily see the prices for weeks at a time.

If your dates are flexible, click either of the initially searched dates in the top search bar. This will show prices for your exact dates, up to 3 days before and after, and flexibility across weekends and the month.

Booking.com flight dates

Price Comparisons — Flights

Here’s how Booking.com stands up to other websites in terms of flight prices.

Airline’s Website (Delta)

$116.20

Booking.com (via Kayak)

$116.20

Expedia

$116.20

Hotwire

$116.20

Orbitz

$138.19

Priceline

$116.20

As you can see, the majority of sites and the airline itself offered the exact same price for the flight. Orbitz users could earn a little less than $2 in Orbucks, which did not make up for the additional charge of a $21.99 booking fee.

To search for a rental car through Booking.com, select Car Rentals in the main menu at the top of your screen. In the past, searches would redirect to a Rentalcars.com page, also part of Booking Holdings Inc., but the search is now seamlessly integrated directly on Booking.com.

Fill in your basic search criteria (including pick-up location, dates, and times), and then click the blue Search button. If you would like to drop off the car in a different location, select the radio button above the pick-up location field.

Booking.com car rental

Your search results will display on a map and you can click Search & filter in the top left corner to bring up filter options. You can also narrow your search by location to the right of the map by clicking Show all X cars .

Booking.com search results

Once you see your search results, you can select the type of car you want (economy, compact, standard, full size, SUV, etc.) across the top of the screen. To the left of the screen, you will see options to filter by car rental company and car specifications, like air conditioning or automatic transmission. Once you’ve applied a filter, the search results are sorted descending by price.

Booking.com search results by location

Each search result box will show you a lot of information about the car, including rental agency, type of car, amenities (like A/C), terms and conditions, and price. There might be 2 prices listed — a price per day or week and a total price. The total price is what you want to pay attention to . This is the price you will actually pay with all taxes and fees included. Click the blue Choose this car button to make your selection.

Booking.com car detail

Next, add any needed extras like a child car seat or GPS and whether or not you’d like to buy Extra Cover from RentalCover.com (more details on car insurance in the next section).

Booking.com car details

Enter your driver details at step 3 of 5 and click Book Now .

As you can see, Booking.com had the lowest price with Thrifty directly at the highest. If you were flexible on the type of car or after the lowest price, it pays to shop several car rental websites as other pages were offering larger cars at a lower price.

In June 2020, TUI and Booking.com announced a strategic global experiences, activities, and excursions partnership , eventually giving Booking.com customers access to 70,000 tours, attractions, and activities bookable via TUI-subsidiary Musement.

The Booking.com Attractions page currently features over 40 destinations, primarily in Europe.

Booking.com attractions

Start your search by selecting a destination from their visual city tiles. You can then explore recommended tours, filter by interest, view by “must-sees,” or see where tours originate on a map. Clicking the blue arrow next to a tour name will bring up a page with more details.

Select the day that you want to tour from the right drop-down menu and click the blue Select button. This will trigger selections for any specific types of tickets you may need to purchase (family, adult, children, senior, etc.). Make your selection and click Next.

Booking.com attractions detail

In the next step, enter your contact details and take note of the cancellation policy, type of ticket, the currency that you’ll be charged in (we have a great round-up of credit cards with no foreign transaction fees !), and what time your tour is scheduled to begin. Click Next to proceed.

Booking.com attractions step 1

Enter your payment details and click Pay now to complete your transaction.

If you are particular about the type of ride you have to and from the airport, you might want to check out the airport taxis section of Booking.com . It’s powered by Rideways and offers access to airport transfers, taxis, and executive cars across the globe.

One thing we really appreciated about this service is that all taxes, service charges, and gratuities are included in the price you see.

To get started, click on Airport Taxis in the main menu at the top of the Booking.com homepage.

Then fill in your information including pick-up and drop-off locations, date, time, and the number of passengers. There is a radio button that you can select if you would like to book a round-trip transfer. Click the blue Search button to continue.

Booking.com airport taxis

The search results will prompt you to select your taxi and include details on size, number of passengers, and bag capacity.

If you’ve dreamed of being greeted at the airport by a driver with your name on a sign, you are in luck! Many rides include a “Meet & Greet” service — your driver will meet you in the arrivals section of the airport to escort you to your car.

Fill out your contact and flight information, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click the blue Continue to book button at the very bottom.

Booking.com airport taxi quote

To complete the booking, fill out your credit card information and click the blue Book Now button. Most reservations can be canceled up to 2 hours before the scheduled pick-up time without penalty.

Booking.com airport taxi payment

Overall, we weren’t super impressed with what Booking.com has to offer, except when it comes to unique accommodations. If you are looking for a bed and breakfast, apartment, villa, or guesthouse, Booking.com offers lots of variety. The new partnership with TUI also plans to deliver plenty of new opportunities to book tours, tickets, and experiences at popular attractions and locations.

If hotel loyalty points are important to you when booking accommodations, you will most likely NOT earn points or have your elite status recognized when booking your room through Booking.com. Any elite status you may have will also likely not be recognized.

As we have learned from researching a lot of OTAs, there is not 1 perfect website that always has the best prices, so it’s always a good idea to shop around.

More travelers risk booking hotel rooms on sites that tack on steep fees

Justin Perry was planning a one-night stay in London for early February and booked a room on what he thought was his chosen hotel’s website. It was only after getting a reservation confirmation that he realized he’d used a third-party platform — which charged him $155.92 in service fees on top of the $269.16 room rate.

“I was shocked,” said Perry, who considers himself a frequent traveler and has booked numerous trips on well-known platforms.

Perry, 49, a managing director for a financial services firm who lives in Boulder, Colorado, reserved the room on Jan. 31 after having searched for the hotel on his phone’s mobile browser. On the results page, he tapped a link that started with the hotel’s name and wound up on a page that he didn’t initially notice was operated by GuestReservations.com.

The booking process seemed straightforward, but the big, colorful “confirm reservation” button appeared above the full amount quoted for Perry’s stay, which appeared in less conspicuous text after scrolling to the bottom of the page.

The problem isn’t new, but it could pose headaches for spring breakers — many of whom are opening their wallets wider to book getaways this year. Nearly half  expect to drop at least $1,000  on their travel plans, up from 34% last year, according to the travel platform Hopper.

“There are some online travel companies, or other travel agencies that do business online, that do not disclose this information clearly and who charge absolutely egregious fees,” said Henry Hartveldt, the president of Atmosphere Research Group, which analyzes the travel industry. That has been the case for at least the last 15 years, he added.

Government regulators, industry groups and consumer advocates have tried to push back against practices by third-party booking sites that draw frequent customer complaints.

Almost a quarter of travelers, 23%, reported having been misled by third-party resellers, translating to 28.5 million hotel stays worth around $5.2 billion, the American Hotel and Lodging Association found in a 2018 survey, the latest data available. Now, as travel volumes blow past pre-pandemic levels — a record  4.7 billion people are expected to travel  this year — more consumers risk similar encounters.

Hartveldt noted that not all third-party booking platforms are unreliable or charge hidden fees. Bigger brands like Expedia and Booking.com are often reliable sources that partner with hotels and resorts to list their rooms. But there’s a plethora of lesser-known affiliate booking platforms, many of which work with larger ones to extend their reach.

That’s often where consumers can get tripped up, Hartveldt said. Some of the sites “design pages to look like they may be a hotel,” he said, “or they are using a hotel logo but displaying that perhaps in a disproportionately large size.”

Perry’s confusion didn’t end after he booked a room with Guest Reservations. The link on his receipt to manage his reservation took him to a different site called GetARoom.com, a platform that the travel industry giant Booking Holdings  acquired in 2021 for about $1.2 billion , folding it under its Priceline subsidiary.

Perry called the number listed on his receipt, which he said “was just a customer service number — it doesn’t say where it’s going to — but when you get somebody, it’s GetARoom.com.” After about two hours of haggling, Perry said he was refunded the full service fee.

A spokesperson for GetARoom said it provides hotel inventory to booking platforms, including Guest Reservations,   but isn’t involved in its customer experience or marketing. “In all instances, GetARoom complies with its legal requirements, takes its compliance obligations seriously and responds to investigations promptly and in accordance with the law,” she said.

A Guest Reservations spokesperson said the company is “committed to providing customers with an easy and transparent way to book stays at hotels worldwide. Similar to when booking directly through a hotel, customers are charged for applicable taxes, including any hotel taxes.”

“By charging a service fee on all reservations, we are able to offer 24/7 customer support and operate as an independent travel network,” the spokesperson said. “All fees, tax recovery charges, and terms are clearly displayed on the website.”

While the Federal Trade Commission is  now in a rulemaking process to ban “junk fees”  that raise the prices of hotel rooms and other consumer purchases, arrangements between large booking platforms and smaller affiliates are a long-standing part of the travel industry.

A key factor that can draw scrutiny from the FTC and consumer advocates is whether booking platforms (of any size) engage in deceptive advertising practices. Federal regulators have brought complaints against third-party booking sites on those grounds in the past.

The FTC has never filed a complaint against either Guest Reservations or GetARoom, but it did so in 2017 against another third-party booking platform called ReservationCounter.com and its parent companies, after consumers complained the site posed as the hotel websites they wanted to book on. The companies  settled with the agency that year  over allegations that they misled consumers with deceptive marketing.

Larger companies were supplying hotel room inventory to those websites through their affiliate programs, the FTC said, describing how the arrangements worked in its 2017 complaint. The smaller firms signed agreements with big platforms such as Expedia, Priceline and Orbitz to obtain inventory, the agency said, but “they advertise and market the available hotel rooms through their own advertisements, websites and call centers” in return for fees.

The Better Business Bureau frequently hears from consumers who mistake booking sites for hotels themselves, often because of the platforms’ advertising tactics, spokesperson Melanie McGovern said. “That’s a lot of the complaints we get about the third-party booking sites,” she said.

Many sites buy ad space appearing at the top of search results pages for key terms, she said. So consumers who want to book directly, rather than with third parties, should scroll past the sponsored ad results and look in the organic results that often appear beneath them. The BBB recommends always reviewing the terms and refund policies before you buy.

If you book with a third-party platform and get charged a surprise fee, the BBB advises calling the customer service line first. If you can’t get through, contact your credit card company to stop or dispute the charge, McGovern said. You can also file a complaint with the bureau.

“It’s really important, as consumers, that we do those checks — that we check with BBB, that we check with our friends and family — to make sure that a site is real before we put any kind of information in it,” McGovern said.

Planning a vacation or trip is undoubtedly stressful. You're bombarded with seemingly endless options for flights, lodging, and things to do, and it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Many travel aggregators strive to present you with the best deals, but they all end up looking very similar to each other.

These similarities make it easy to know what to do and expect when you first visit a site. Typically, you enter your destinations, dates, and number of travelers. After you click search, you can further filter based on price range, airlines, and departure times for flights; amenities, hotel stars, and location for hotels; and type of car and rental car company for cars.

So what makes one site better than another?

It all depends on your priorities and preferences. Everyone travels and plans for that travel differently. Here are seven travel sites and the factors you should consider when choosing a site.

Booking.com

booking.com websites

Booking.com is a huge bank of information, offering more than 1 million properties in 117,000 destinations in 225 countries and territories. Wherever you'd like to go, you'll find it through this site. It offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars.  Clicking  restaurants will take you to OpenTable.

Highlights:

I found their desktop homepage to be cluttered and a lot to look at compared to the homepages of other sites, but their app experience was noticeably simpler, which makes sense as travelers increasingly turn mobile.

One feature on the homepage that stood out to me (shown above) was the "Are you traveling for work?" option. Clicking "Yes" will present popular business travel options like WiFi and breakfast.

Another feature was its flexible date suggestions if your chosen destination is a popular choice and accommodations are more than 50% reserved during your selected dates.

Best for:

  • Wide variety of options, including hostels, homestays, and bed and breakfasts
  • Easy access to your plans and searches by syncing your account across your devices
  • Getting the best deals with their Price Match offer
  • Destination travel guides and articles

Lacking or not the best for:

  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

booking.com websites

Expedia offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises, and things to do.

You can bundle flight, hotel, and car deals so you don't have to go through the headache of looking separately and trying to coordinate all the deals.

The "My Trips" section is helpful for managing your entire itinerary in one place, so you don't have to search through endless emails and accounts to figure out your vacation plan.

If you sign up as a member, you can earn Expedia+ points to use toward future trips. Use the mobile app to earn 2x Expedia+ points.

Like Booking.com, Expedia also offers suggestions for date shifts, date extensions, and route changes to get you to the cheapest deal.

  • Hotel, flight, and car bundles
  • Coordinating your whole vacation itinerary
  • Reward points system
  • Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Book a trip with Expedia

Tripadvisor.

booking.com websites

TripAdvisor offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and things to do.

It's well-known for its user-generated reviews, so as you're booking, you get the added benefit of reading reviews all in the same place. While I'm partial to Yelp for food recommendations and believe it to be better for US destinations, TripAdvisor is much more widely used in the international community.

TripAdvisor is the most experience-driven travel site. You are not just booking somewhere to live — you're signing up to experience and explore a destination.

  • Detailed filtering (e.g. style for hotels and distinctive features for vacation rentals)
  • Comparing deals across aggregators
  • Strong user-generated review community
  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

CheapOair offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.  Clicking on its cruises  tab takes you to another site, Cheap Cruises.

The "Travel by Interest" section offers special deals for senior , military , student , and last minute travel . The military and student discounts emphasize keeping costs low, while the senior discount focuses on senior friendly destinations at an affordable price.

Whether you're coordinating a reunion, wedding, or corporate event, a Group Travel Request is a good option. You can work with an agent on your travel needs.

  • Specific travelers like senior citizens, military, students, and large groups
  • Higher than usual service fees (e.g. $32 per night per room for hotel bookings)

Book a trip with CheapOair

booking.com websites

Hotwire offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.

Hotwire gives you all the filters and options you need but maintains the balance of not giving you too much. It keeps its sections simple, so you don't need to worry about something you may be missing out on.

Thanks to partnerships with other travel sites like Hotels.com and Expedia, Hotwire can offer extremely low prices. There is also a free 24-hour cancellation policy on most flights.

  • Focused searchers who do not want to be distracted or overwhelmed by too many options, things to do, and city guides. Destination guides and inspiration can be found on a separate blog page.
  • Travelers on a budget
  • Travelers with very specific preferences like hotel brand or car brand

Book a trip with Hotwire

Travelocity.

booking.com websites

Travelocity offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises and things to do.  And no, you're not seeing double. Expedia owns Travelocity, which may explain why the two homepages look almost exactly the same.

From what we can tell, the most noticeable difference is Travelocity's Roaming Gnome, which represents the inspiration and wanderlust of traveling. The "Inspiration" section contains interesting articles like "Best Foodie Finds in Airports Around the World" and themes like "Luxury" or "Romantic." Expedia's travel blog, on the other hand, is relegated to an easy-to-miss link near the bottom of the page.

  • All the benefits of Expedia but with a more exploratory inspiration angle
  •  Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Book a trip with Travelocity

booking.com websites

Priceline offers booking for  flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises.

The " Express Deals " option rewards flexible travelers with up to 60% savings on hotels. The site will give you the location and star rating, but not the name of the hotel. You can still choose the bed type for many of the options.

Another way to save is the Name Your Own Price feature where you input the location, star rating, and price bid for a hotel.

For car rentals, you can also Name Your Own Price and bid for a car. If you don't have big preferences on the car brand, you'll be able to find a car for a price less than the search listings give you. For example, I was able to get an economy car with unlimited mileage for $30 a day, while the general search yielded cars that were all at least $37 a day.

The cruise section is clear and easy to navigate. The search option is similar to searching for flights, with more dropdown selections than other sites. This feature is ideal for travelers who know exactly what they want for their cruise experience, and are not merely shopping around.

  • Travelers with low hotel and car brand loyalty who want to find a great deal
  • Having a more focused cruise search process
  • Travel inspiration or destination guides
  • Low risk takers who like to know exactly what they're getting

Still have  questions?

How much commission do i pay booking.com and when do i pay it.

We operate on a commission-based model, where you pay a set percentage on each reservation, including non-refundable bookings, which will be charged whether or not a guest stays. You'll receive a monthly invoice via email. You can pay in single monthly installments. Find additional details and payment history under the Extranet’s “Finance” tab. Learn more about commission at Booking.com.

What do I need to do before I can welcome guests to my property?

Before travelers can find and book your property on our platform, you have to complete all the registration steps. Once your status is set to open/bookable, you can see your property page on our platform as available for bookings. Learn more about becoming open/bookable.

How do you check that my property is real?

After listing your property, you’ll need to confirm your property’s location to verify it exists, and to ensure guests can find it easily to provide them with a positive experience. We use different methods to confirm your property’s location based on your property type and location. If your property’s location remains unverified, we’ll temporarily close your property, meaning you won’t be able to receive new bookings. Learn more about verifying your property’s location.

How do you handle fraudulent bookings?

We have teams dedicated to creating, maintaining, and improving controls to mitigate and prevent fraudulent bookings. There are also measures you can take to protect your business and ways to report a suspected fake booking.

To make sure you receive real bookings from real people, you can set up your property to only accept reservations from bookers with a verified phone number and/or home address. Cancellation policies and fees can also help protect you from potential income loss. Learn more about identifying, preventing, and reporting fake bookings.

How can I change the information displayed on my property page?

You can add a variety of content to give your listing more detail and make it more attractive to potential guests. We use your facilities, location details, and other items from your property info to auto-generate a property description containing the most relevant information for potential guests. Learn more about updating your property page.

Can I choose when I get my first reservations?

In most cases,  once your status is set to open/bookable , you can see your property page on our platform available for bookings, starting with the first day you set available in your calendar. If you prefer to have more control over your bookings, depending on your property type, you may be able to use the Request to Book feature, where guests are required to send a booking request you can accept or decline. Read more about it and the eligibility criteria  here .

Do I have to finish my registration in one go?

You can come back to your registration at a later time if you don’t finish right away. We’ll inform you periodically if anything is missing so you can successfully complete your registration. Click here to continue your registration .

Can I pause my property listing after completing registration?

You can pause (snooze) your listing for specific periods after finishing your registration and going open/bookable. However, any bookings you’ve already received must be honored.  Learn more about snoozing your listing.
