In England and America he was never known to preach anything that depended on a special form. The realisation of Brahman was his only imperative, the Adwaita philosophy his only system of doctrine, the Vedas and Upanishads his sole scriptural authority.

স্বামীজির জীবনের এই অংশের যেটুকু আভাস আমি পেয়েছি, তাঁর মাতৃপূজার উল্লেখ না করলে এ বিবরণ নিতান্তই অসম্পূর্ণ থেকে যাবে। আমি সর্বদা অনুভব করেছি, তাঁর আধ্যাত্মিক চেতনার মধ্যে দু-রকম উপাদান ছিল। নিঃসন্দেহে তিনি জন্ম থেকেই ব্রহ্মজ্ঞানী ছিলেন; শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংস বারবার এ কথাই বলে গিয়েছেন। যখন তাঁর বয়স মাত্র আট বছর, খেলতে বসেই তাঁর মধ্যে সমাধিতে মগ্ন হওয়ার শক্তির বিকাশ দেখা যায়। ধর্ম সম্বন্ধে তাঁর মনের স্বাভাবিক টান ছিল যা কিছু সূক্ষ্ম ও দার্শনিক ভাবাপন্ন তার প্রতি, সাধারণভাবে যাকে পৌত্তলিক বলে বলা হয় ঠিক তার উলটোটাই। যৌবনে, এবং খুব সম্ভবত শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণের দ্বারা প্রভাবিত হওয়ার কিছুকাল পরে, তিনি সাধারণ ব্রাত্মসমাজের নিয়মমাফিক সদস্য হন। ইংল্যান্ড ও আমেরিকায় তিনি এমন কিছু প্রচার করেছিলেন বলে জানা নেই, যা কোনো বিশেষ দেবমূর্তি বা সাকার ভাবের ওপর নির্ভর করে গড়ে উঠেছে। তাঁর কাছে ব্রহ্মের উপলব্ধিই ছিল একমাত্র লক্ষ্য, অদ্বৈত দর্শন শ্রেষ্ঠ মতবাদ, এবং বেদ ও উপনিষদ একমাত্র প্রামাণ্য গ্রন্থ।

And yet, side by side with this, it is also true that in India the word “Mother” was forever on his lips. He spoke of Her, as we of one deeply familiar in the household life. He was constantly preoccupied with Her. Like other children, he was not always good. Sometimes he would be naughty and rebellious. But always to Her. Never did he attribute to any other, the good or evil that befell. On a certain solemn occasion, he entrusted to a disciple a prayer to Her that in his own life had acted as a veritable charm. “And mind!” he added suddenly, turning with what was almost fierceness upon the receiver, “make Her listen to you, when you say it! None of that cringing to Mother! Remember!” Every now and then he would break out with some new fragment of description. The right hand raised in blessing, the left holding the sword,-“Her curse is blessing!” would be the sudden exclamation that ended a long reverie. Or becoming half-lyric in the intensity of his feeling. “Deep in the heart of hearts of Her own, flashes the blood-red knife of Kali. Worshippers of the Mother are they from their birth, in Her incarnation of the sword!” From him was gathered, in such moments as these, almost every line and syllable of a certain short psalm, called the “Voice of the Mother,” which I wrote and published about this time. “I worship the Terrible!” he was continually saying, and once, “It is a mistake to hold that with all men pleasure is the motive. Quite as many are born to seek after pain. Let us worship the Terror for Its own sake.”

কিন্তু পাশাপাশি এও সত্যি যে ভারতে জগন্ময়ী ‘মা’ শব্দটি সদাসর্বদা তাঁর মুখে লেগে থাকত। আমরা যেমন পারিবারিক জীবনে অতি পরিচিত কারোর সম্পর্কে কথা বলে থাকি, ঠিক সেইভাবে তিনি তাঁর (জগন্মাতা মা কালীর) কথা বলতেন। সবসময় তিনি তাঁর চিন্তায় বিভোর থাকতেন। অন্যান্য সন্তানের মতো তিনি সবসময় শান্তশিষ্ট ছিলেন না। কখনও কখনও তিনি দুষ্টু ও বিদ্রোহী হয়ে উঠতেন। কিন্তু সবসময় তাঁর প্রতি নিবেদিত ছিলেন। ভালো মন্দ যাই ঘটুক না কেন, অন্য কাউকে তিনি কখনও দায়ী করতেন না। কোনো এক ভাব-গম্ভীর অনুষ্ঠানে তিনি তাঁর এক শিষ্যকে মায়ের একটি প্রার্থনা শিখিয়ে দেন, যে প্রার্থনা তাঁর নিজের জীবনে মন্ত্রশক্তির মতো কাজ করেছিল। তারপর হঠাৎ করেই তিনি একপ্রকার তীব্রভাবে শিষ্যের দিকে ফিরে বলে উঠলেন, “আর দেখো, শুধু প্রার্থনা উচ্চারণ নয়, তাঁকে দিয়ে জোর করেই এই মন্ত্রসিদ্ধি করাতে হবে। মায়ের কাছে এসব দীন-হীন ভীতুভীতু ভাব চলবে না!” “এই কথা খেয়াল রেখো!” মাঝে মাঝেই তিনি কোনো নতুন বিষয়ের আংশিক অবতারণা করতেন। মায়ের ডান হাত আশীর্বাদ প্রদানের জন্য উত্তোলিত, বাম হাতে ধরা থাকে খড়গ। ভাবের ঘোর কাটলে তিনি হঠাৎ করেই বলে উঠতেন, “তাঁর শাপই আশীর্বাদ!” অথবা কখনও ভাবাবেগে তাঁর এই কথা প্রায় কবির ভাষা হয়ে উঠত, যখন তিনি বলে উঠতেন, “তাঁর মনেরই গোপন কোণে, কালী মায়ের রক্ত-রাঙা খড়্গখানি ঝলসে উঠে। তারাই তো মায়ের উপাসক যারা জন্ম থেকেই মায়ের খড়্গের প্রতিমূর্তি!” এই সময়ে আমি ‘জগন্মাতার বাণী’ (Voice of the Mother) নামক যে ছোটো স্তোত্রটি রচনা ও প্রকাশ করি, তার প্রায় প্রত্যেকটি ছত্র ও বর্ণ তাঁরই কাছ থেকে এইরকম মুহূর্তগুলিতে সংগৃহীত। তিনি সবসময় বলতেন, “আমি ভয়ংকরের উপাসক!”—আর একবার বলেছিলেন, “এ কথা মনে করা ভুল যে, সবাই সুখের আশায় কাজ করে। বহু লোকই আছে যাদের জন্ম দুঃখের সন্ধানে হয়ে থাকে। এস, আমরা তাঁর কারণেই তাঁর ভয়ংকরী রূপের উপাসনা করি।”

He had a whole-hearted contempt for what he regarded as squeamishness or mawkishness. He wasted few words on me, when I came to him with my difficulties about animal sacrifice in the temple. He made no reference, as he might have done, to the fact that most of us, loudly as we may attack this, have no hesitation in offering animal sacrifice to ourselves. He offered no argument, as he easily might have done, regarding the degradation of the butcher and the slaughter-house, under the modern system. “Why not a little blood, to complete the picture?” was his only direct reply to my objections. And it was with considerable difficulty that I elicited from him, and from another disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, sitting near, the actual facts of the more austere side of Kali-worship, that side which has transcended the sacrifice of others. He told me however that he had never tolerated the blood-offering commonly made to the “demons who attend on Kali.” This was simple devil-worship, and he had no place for it. His own effort being constantly to banish fear and weakness from his own consciousness and to learn to recognise the Mother as instinctively in evil, terror, sorrow, arid annihilation, as in that which makes for sweetness and joy, it followed that the one thing he could not away with was any sort of watering-down of the great conception. “Fools!” he exclaimed once, as he dwelt in quiet talk on “the worship of the Terrible,” on “becoming one with the Terrible”-“Fools! they put a garland of skulls round Thy neck, and then start back in terror, and call Thee ‘the Merciful’ I” And as he spoke, the underlying egoism of worship that is devoted to the worship that kind God, to Providence, the consoling Divinity, without a heart for God in ‘the earthquake, or God in the volcano, overwhelmed the listener. One saw that such worship was at bottom, as the Hindu calls it, merely ‘shop-keeping,’ and one realised the infinitely greater boldness and truth of the teaching that God manifests through evil as well as through good. One saw that the true attitude for the mind and will that are not to be baffled by the personal self, was in fact the determination, in the stern words of the Swami Vivekananda, ‘to seek death not life, to hurl oneself upon the sword’s point, to become one with the Terrible for evermore!’

কোনো কিছু নিয়ে খুঁতখুঁতানি কিংবা ন্যাকাপনার প্রতি তাঁর সম্পূর্ণ অবজ্ঞা ছিল। একবার যখন মন্দিরে পশুবলির বিষয়ে অভিযোগ নিয়ে তাঁর কাছে হাজির হই, তিনি বেশি কিছু বললেন না। আমাদের অনেকেই পশুবলির বিরুদ্ধে উচ্চকণ্ঠে প্রতিবাদ জানালেও নিজেদের ভোজনের জন্য পশুহত্যায় বিন্দুমাত্র দ্বিধা করি না, তিনি সেই সত্য উল্লেখ করতে পারতেন কিন্তু তা তিনি করলেন না। আধুনিক প্রথায় কসাই ও কসাইখানার যে দুর্গতি ঘটেছে যুক্তি দিয়ে তা তিনি দেখিয়ে দিতে পারতেন কিন্তু তাও তিনি করলেন না। আমার অভিযোগের উত্তরে তিনি শুধু স্পষ্টভাবে বললেন, “ছবিটিকে সম্পূর্ণভাবে ফুটিয়ে তোলার জন্য একটুখানি রক্ত নয় কেন?” তাঁর এবং কাছেই বসে থাকা শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণের আর একজন শিষ্যের কাছ থেকে কালীপুজোর জটিল দিকগুলির মূল তথ্যগুলি সংগ্রহ করতে যথেষ্ট কষ্ট করতে হল, সেই দিক যা সাধারণ মানবিক যুক্তি অতিক্রম করে যায়। যাই হোক, তিনি বললেন, মা কালীর অনুচর ভূতপ্রেতগণের উদ্দেশ্যে রক্ত-নিবেদন তিনি মোটেই মেনে নিতে পারেন না। এ তো শুধু ভূতপ্রেতের উপাসনা, আর এতে তাঁর কোনো সমর্থন নেই। তাঁর নিরন্তর প্রচেষ্টা ছিল মন থেকে ভয় দূর করে দিয়ে মাধুর্য ও আনন্দের মধ্যে যেমন মায়ের প্রকাশ দেখা যায় তেমনি যা কিছু অশুভ, ভয়ংকর, দুঃখ ও বিনাশের মধ্যেও তাঁকে চিনতে শেখা; তাই সেই মহান ভাবধারাকে ছোটো করে দেখা তিনি মোটেই সহ্য করতে পারতেন না। “মূর্খ!” একদিন “ভয়ংকরী মূর্তির পূজা” এবং “ভয়ংকরী মায়ের সঙ্গে একাত্ম হওয়ার” প্রসঙ্গে শান্তভাবে কথা বলার সময় হঠাৎ তিনি উচ্চস্বরে বলে উঠলেন—“মূর্খ! ওরা মুণ্ডের মালা তোমার গলায় পরায়, আর ভয়ে ভয়ে তোমার দিকে ফিরে চায়, আবার বলে তোমায় ‘দয়াময়ী’!” আর এই কথা বলা মাত্রই শ্রোতার জ্ঞান হল যে ভূমিকম্প বা আগ্নেয়গিরির মধ্যে প্রকাশিত ঈশ্বরকে হৃদয় অর্পণ না করলে যে ঈশ্বর দয়াময়, ভাগ্যবিধাতা, সান্ত্বনাদানকারী দেবতা তাঁর উদ্দেশ্যে নিবেদিত পূজা তলায় তলায় বিদ্যমান অহংসর্বস্বতা মাত্র। একজন বুঝল এই ধরনের পূজা হিন্দুরা যাকে শুধুই ‘দোকানদারি’ বলে থাকে, তা ছাড়া আর কিছুই নয়, আর বুঝল যে এই শিক্ষা বহুগুণে নির্ভীক ও সত্য—মঙ্গলের মধ্যে তাঁর যেমন প্রকাশ, অমঙ্গলের মধ্যে তাঁর সেই রকমই প্রকাশ। আমার মতো একজন মানুষ সত্যিই দেখতে পেল, ক্ষুদ্র ব্যক্তিগত স্বার্থের দ্বারা পরাজিত আমির গণ্ডি অতিক্রম করতে গেলে যে মনোভাব ও ইচ্ছাশক্তির প্রয়োজন, তাই আসলে দৃঢ়সংকল্প, স্বামীজির কঠোর ভাষায় যা এভাবেই প্রকাশ পায়, ‘জীবন নয়, মৃত্যুকেই অনুসন্ধান করতে হবে, নিজেকে খড়ের মুখে নিক্ষেপ করতে হবে, চিরকাল ভয়ংকরী জগজ্জনীর সঙ্গে একাত্ম হতে হবে।

It would have been altogether inconsistent with the Swami’s idea of freedom, to have sought to impose his own conceptions on a disciple. But everything in my past life as an educationist had contributed to impress on me now the necessity of taking on the Indian consciousness, and the personal perplexity associated with the memory of the pilgrimage to Amamath was a witness not to be forgotten to the strong place which Indian systems of worship held in that consciousness. I set myself therefore to enter into Kali worship, as one would set oneself to learn a new language, or take birth deliberately, perhaps, in a new race. To this fact I owe it that I was able to understand as much as I did of our Master’s life and thought. Step by step,glimpse after glimpse, I began to comprehend a little. And in matters religious, he was, without knowing it, a born educator. He never checked a struggling thought. Being with him one day when an image of Kali was brought in, and noticing some passing expression, I suddenly said “Perhaps, Swamiji, Kali is the Vision of Shiva! Is She?” He looked at me for a moment. “Well ! Well I Express it in your own way,” he said gently, “Express it in your own way!”

Another day he was going with me to visit the old Maharshi Devendra Nath Tagore, in the seclusion of his home in Jorasanko, and before we started, he questioned me about a death-scene at which I had been present the night before. I told him eagerly of the sudden realisation that had come to me, that religions were only languages, and we must speak to a man in his own language. His whole face lighted up at the thought. “Yes!” he exclaimed, “And Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was the only man who taught that! He was the only man who ever had the courage to say that we must speak to all men in their own language!”

Yet there came a day when he found it necessary to lay down with unmistakable clearness his own position in the matter of Mother-worship. I was about to lecture at the Kalighat, and he came to instruct me that if any foreign friends should wish to be present, they were to remove their shoes, and sit on the floor, like the rest of the audience. In that Presence no exceptions were to be made. I was myself to be responsible for this.

তবুও এমন একদিন এল, যখন তিনি মাতৃপূজা সম্বন্ধে তাঁর নিজের অবস্থান সুস্পষ্টভাবে জানিয়ে দেওয়ার প্রয়োজন অনুভব করলেন। আমার কালীঘাটে বক্তৃতা দেওয়ার কথা ছিল, এবং তিনি আমাকে এ কথা নির্দেশ দিতে এলেন যে আমার বিদেশি বন্ধুগণ উপস্থিত হতে চাইলে অন্য শ্রোতাদের মতো তাদেরকেও জুতো খুলে মেঝের ওপর বসতে হবে। ওই মহাপীঠে মায়ের দিব্য উপস্থিতিতে সাধারণ নিয়মের যেন কোনো ব্যতিক্রম না ঘটে। আমার ওপর এই বিষয়টি দেখার ভার রইল।

After saying all this, however, he lingered before going, and then, making a shy reference to Colonel Hay’s poem of the ‘Guardian Angels’, he said, “That is precisely my position about Brahman and the gods! I believe in Brahman and the gods, and not in anything else!”

এই কথা বলে চলে যাওয়ার আগে তিনি আরও কিছুক্ষণ থেকে গেলেন। তারপর যেন কিছুটা অনিচ্ছুকভাবে, কিছুটা লজ্জায় কর্নেল হে-র ‘Guardian Angels’ (রক্ষাকারী দেবগণ) নামক কবিতার উল্লেখ করে বললেন, “ব্রষ্ম ও দেবদেবী সম্পর্কে এই আমার অবস্থান বা অভিমত! আমি ব্রক্ষ্ম ও দেবদেবীতেই বিশ্বাস করি, আর অন্য কিছুতে আমার বিশ্বাস নেই।”

He was evidently afraid that my intellectual difficulty would lie where his own must have done, in the incompatibility of the exaltation of one definite scheme of worship with the highest Vedantic theory of Brahman. He did not understand that to us who stood about him, he was himself the reconciliation of these opposites, and the witness to the truth of each. Following up this train of thought, therefore, he dropped into a mood of half soliloquy, and sat for a while talking disjointedly, answering questions, trying to make himself clear, as if held by some spell he could not yet always half absorbed in something within, not break.

স্পষ্টত তিনি আশঙ্কিত ছিলেন তাঁর নিজেরও যেমন যুক্তি দিয়ে বুঝতে অসুবিধা হয়েছিল আমারও যুক্তি দিয়ে বুঝতে অসুবিধা হবে যে-কোনো এক বিশেষ পূজা-পদ্ধতির শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব এবং বেদান্তের চরম ব্রহ্মবাদের মধ্যে সমন্বয়সাধন হতে পারে। স্বামীজি নিজে জানতেন না যে আমাদের কাছে তিনিই ছিলেন সমস্ত বিপরীত ধর্মবিশিষ্ট ভাবের সমন্বয়স্থল এবং প্রত্যেকটি ধর্মে যে সত্য বিরাজমান তিনিই তার স্বাক্ষীস্বরূপ। তাই ওই বিষয়টি ভাবতে ভাবতে তিনি কিছুক্ষণ আপন মনে কথা বলতে লাগলেন, এবং কিছুক্ষণ অসংলগ্ন কথা বলতে বলতে বসে রইলেন, যেন প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিচ্ছেন, নিজের কথা সহজ করে বোঝানোর চেষ্টা করছেন, আবার নিজের মধ্যে কোনো ভাবনায় ডুব দিচ্ছেন, যেন মনে হচ্ছে চেষ্টা করেও যে ভাবে তিনি বিভোর হয়ে আছেন তার মায়াজাল (প্রভাব) কাটতে পারছেন না।

“How I used to hate Kali!” he said, “And all Her ways! That was the ground of my six years’ fight, that I would not accept Her. But I had to accept Her at last! Ramakrishna Paramahamsa dedicated me to Her, and now I believe that She guides me in every little thing I do, and does with me what She will Yet I fought so long! I loved him, you see, and that was what held me. I saw his marvellous purity. I felt his wonderful love. His greatness had not dawned on me then. All that came afterwards, when I had given in.. At that time I thought him a brain-sick baby, always seeing visions and the rest. I hated it. And then I too had to accept Her!

তিনি বলেন উঠলেন, “মা কালীকে আমি কত ঘৃণা করেছি। তাঁর লীলাকেও ঘৃণা করেছি! ছ-বছর ধরে এই ব্যাপারে নিজের মধ্যে যুদ্ধ চালিয়েছি—তাঁকে আমি মানব না। কিন্তু শেষে তাঁকেই মেনে নিতে হল! রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংসদেব আমাকে তাঁর কাছে উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন, আর এখন আমি বিশ্বাস করি, অতি সামান্য কাজেও তিনি আমাকে পথ দেখাচ্ছেন, আমাকে দিয়ে তাঁর ইচ্ছামতোই কাজ করিয়ে নিচ্ছেন! … তবুও আমি বহুদিন যুদ্ধ চালিয়েছিলাম! আমি যে পরমহংসকে ভালোবাসতাম, তাই তাঁর বাঁধনেই পড়ে রইলাম। আমি তাঁর অদ্ভুত পবিত্রতা দেখেছি … আমি তাঁর অসাধারণ ভালোবাসার ছোঁয়া পেয়েছি… তাঁর মহত্ত্ব তখন বুঝতে পারিনি। যখন আমি তাঁর অনুগত হলাম, সবই পরে বুঝতে পেরেছিলাম। সে সময়ে আমি তাঁকে ক্ষ্যাপা শিশু বলেই মনে করতাম—যিনি উদ্ভট সব স্বপ্ন আর ওই রকম যত কাল্পনিক দৃশ্য দেখেন। আমি সেসব ঘৃণা করতাম। আর আমাকেই কিনা তাঁকে (মা কালীকে) মেনে নিতে হল!”

“No, the thing that made me do it is a secret that will die with me. I had great misfortunes at that time. It was an opportunity She made a slave of me. Those were the very words ‘a slave of you.’ And Ramakrishna Paramahamsa made me over to Her… Strange I He lived only two years after doing that, and most of the time he was suffering. Not more than six months did he keep his own health and brightness.

“না, কোন্ শক্তিতে আমাকে এমনটা করতে হল, তা গোপন ব্যাপার, জীবনে কাউকে তা আমি বলব না। সে সময় আমার খুব দুর্দিন চলছিল। সেই সুযোগে তিনি আমাকে তাঁর দাস করে নিলেন। এ যে তাঁর (ঠাকুর রামকৃষ্ণের) সেই কথা—‘তুই মায়ের গোলাম হবি।’ শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংসদেব আমাকে মায়ের চরণে সমর্পণ করলেন। … এ বড়ই বিস্ময়ের ব্যাপার। এই ঘটনার পর তিনি মাত্র দু-বছর জীবিত ছিলেন। আর অধিকাংশ সময় অসুখে ভুগছিলেন। ছ-মাস যেতে না যেতেই তাঁর স্বাস্থ্য ভেঙে গেল, মনের আনন্দও কোথায় হারিয়ে গেল। 

“Guru Nanak was like that, you know, looking for the one disciple to whom he would give his power. And he passed over all his own family, children were as nothing to him, till he came upon the boy to whom he gave it, and then he could die.

তুমি তো জানই, গুরু নানকেরও ওই রকম অবস্থা হয়েছিল, তিনিও এমন এক শিষ্য খুঁজছিলেন যার মধ্যে তিনি নিজের শক্তি সঞ্চার করবেন। নিজের পরিবারবর্গকেও তিনি উপেক্ষা করে গেলেন—তাঁর সন্তানগণও যেন তাঁর কাছে আপনজন নয়—শেষে তিনি সেই বালকের সন্ধান পেলেন যাকে তিনি তাঁর শক্তি উজাড় করে দিলেন, আর তারপরেই তিনি নিশ্চিন্তে মৃত্যুবরণ করলেন।

“The future, you say, will call Ramakrishna Paramahamsa an Incarnation of Kali? Yes, I think there’s no doubt that She worked up the body of Ramakrishna for Her own ends.

“তুমিই কি বলছ, ভাবীযুগ শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংসদেবকে মা কালীর অবতার বলবে? হ্যাঁ, আমারও তাই মনে হয়, এ ব্যাপারে কোনো সন্দেহ নেই যে মা তাঁর নিজের প্রয়োজনেই রামকৃষ্ণের দেহধারণ করে এই ধরায় আবির্ভূত হয়েছিলেন। 

“You see, I cannot but believe that there is somewhere a great Power That thinks of Herself as feminine, and called Kali, and Mother And I believe in Brahman too But is it not always like that? Is it not the multitude of cells in the body that make up the personality, the many brain-centres, not the one, that produce consciousness? Unity in complexity! Just so! And why should it be different with Brahman? It is Brahman. It is the One. And yet-and yet-it is the gods too!”

‘ভেবে দেখ, আমার দৃঢ় বিশ্বাস, কোথাও না কোথাও এমন কোনো এক মহাশক্তি আছেন, যিনি নিজেকে প্রকৃতিসত্তা বলে মনে করেন, তাঁর নাম কালী, তাঁরই নাম মা … আর আমি ব্রহ্মেও বিশ্বাস করি …. কিন্তু এমনটা সর্বদা হয় না কি? শরীরের মধ্যে অসংখ্য কোষ মিলে কি এক ব্যক্তিকে সৃষ্টি করে না? এক নয়, একাধিক মস্তিষ্ককেন্দ্রেই কি চেতনার উদ্রেক করে না? বৈচিত্র্যের মধ্যে ঐক্য! এই হল আসল কথা! তবে ব্রহ্মের বেলায় অন্যরকম হবে কেন? তিনি হলেন ব্রহ্ম। তিনি অদ্বিতীয়। আবার তিনিই বহু দেবদেবী রূপে আবির্ভূত হন !” 

Similarly, he had returned from a pilgrimage in Kashmir saying “These gods are not merely symbols! They are the forms that the Bhaktas have seen! ” And it is told of Sri Ramakrishna that he would sometimes speak, coming out of Samadhi, of the past experience of that soul that dwelt within him,-“He who came as Rama, as Krishna, as Jesus dwells here”–and then would add play- fully, turning to his chief disciple, “But not in your Vedanta sense, Noren!”

একইভাবে কাশ্মীরের তীর্থযাত্রা থেকে ফেরার পর তিনি বলেছিলেন, “এইসব দেবদেবী শুধু মনগড়া প্রতীক নন! ভক্তরা ঈশ্বরকে যে রূপে সাক্ষাৎ করেছেন, এইসব দেবদেবীরা তাঁরই প্রতিরূপ!” শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ সম্পর্কেও এ কথা শোনা যায় যে সমাধি থেকে বেরিয়ে আসার পর কখনও কখনও তিনি বলতেন, যে আত্মা তাঁর দেহের মধ্যে অবস্থান করছে সেই আত্মার অতীত অভিজ্ঞতার কথা— “যিনি রাম অবতার রূপে এসেছিলেন, কৃষ্ণ হিসেবে এসেছিলেন, জিশু অবতারে এসেছিলেন তাঁরা সবাই এখানে, আমার শরীরেই বাস করেন”—আর তারপরই তাঁর প্রধান শিষ্যের দিকে তাকিয়ে খেলাচ্ছলে বলতেন, “কিন্তু তা বলে নরেন তোর বেদান্তের দিক দিয়ে নয়।”

Thus we are admitted to a glimpse of the struggle that goes on in great souls, for the correlation and mutual adjustment of the different realisations of different times. On the one side the Mother, on the other side Brahman. We are reminded of the Swami’s own words, heard long ago, “The impersonal God, seen through the mists of sense, personal.” In truth it might well be that the two ideas could not be reconciled. Both conceptions could not be equally true at the same time. It is clear enough that in the end, as a subjective realisation, either the Mother must become Brahman, or Brahman the Mother. One of the two must melt into the other, the question of which, in any particular case, depending on the destiny and the past of the worshipping soul.

বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিভিন্নভাবে উপলব্ধ বোধের মধ্যে পারস্পরিক সম্পর্ক এবং তাদের মধ্যে সমন্বয়সাধনের ব্যাপারে মহাপুরুষগণের মনে যে দ্বন্দ্ব চলতে থাকে তার আভাস আমরা এভাবেই পেয়ে থাকি। একদিকে জগন্মাতা, অন্যদিকে ব্রা। অনেকদিন আগে স্বামীজির কাছ থেকে শোনা কথাগুলি মনে পড়ে, “ইন্দ্রিয়জ্ঞানের কুহেলিকার মধ্যে দিয়ে দেখলে নির্গুণ ব্রয়কে সগুণ ব্ৰহ্ম বলে মনে হয়।” আসলে এটাই হয়তো ঠিক এই দুই ভাবের মধ্যে সমন্বয়সাধন সম্ভব হয়ে ওঠে না। একই সময়ে দুটি ধারণা সমানভাবে সত্যি হতে পারে না। অবশেষে এটাই স্পষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে যে ব্যক্তিগত অনুভূতিতে হয় শক্তিকে ব্রহ্ম হয়ে উঠতে হবে, নতুবা ব্রহ্মকে মাতৃরূপে (শক্তিরূপে) পরিণত হতে হবে। কোটি কার মধ্যে বিলীন হবে, তা সাধক বিশেষে অদৃষ্ট ও পূর্বজন্মের সংস্কারের ওপর নির্ভর করে।

For my own part, the conversation I have related marked an epoch. Ever since it took place, I have thought I saw in my Master’s attitude a certain element of one who carried for another a trust confided to him. He would always, when asked to explain of Kali, speak of it as the book of experience, in which the soul turns page the image after page, only to find that there is nothing in it, after all. And this, to my own mind, is the final explanation. Kali the Mother is to be the worship of the Indian future. In Her name will her sons find it possible to sound many experiences to their depths. And yet, in the end their hearts will return to the ancient wisdom, and each man will know, when his hour comes, that all his life was but as a dream.

আমার নিজের কথা বলতে গেলে, যে সব কথার বর্ণনা আমি দিলাম তা আমার জীবনে এক নতুন যুগের সূচনা করেছে। তখন থেকেই আমার প্রভুর (স্বামীজির) আচরণ আমি লক্ষ করে দেখেছি, তিনি যেন অন্য কারোর কাছ থেকে প্রাপ্ত বিশেষ কাজের দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ ও বহন করে চলছেন। মা কালীর মূর্তি সম্পর্কে কিছু ব্যাখ্যা করার অনুরোধ করলে তিনি বলতেন, মা যেন অভিজ্ঞতার মহাগ্রন্থ, মানুষ সেই গ্রন্থের পৃষ্ঠার পর পৃষ্ঠা উলটে অবশেষে দেখতে পায়, এতে কিছু নেই। আমার নিজেরও মনে হয় এটাই চরম ব্যাখ্যা। ভবিষ্যতের ভারতে মা কালী একমাত্র উপাস্য হবেন। তাঁর নাম নিয়েই সন্তানগণ নানা অভিজ্ঞতার মূলে যেতে পারবেন। তবুও সবশেষে তাঁদের হৃদয় সেই আদি জ্ঞান লাভ করবে, প্রত্যেক মানুষই তার শুভ মুহূর্ত উদয় হলে বুঝতে পারবে যে তার সমগ্র জীবনই ছিল এক স্বপ্নমাত্র।

Who does not remember the Veda-like words of the Gita? – “Not, verily, by avoiding action, can a man rise to this inaction!” May we not, similarly, know for a certainty that not without going through this experience can we reach the realisation at the end? Through the Mother to Brahman, through new life and knowledge, and many changes, through the struggles, the victories, and the defeats of future, to that safe haven of the soul where all is One and all is peace? As I look more and more closely into the life of that great Teacher whom I have followed, I see each day with growing clearness, how he himself was turning the pages of the book of experience, and that it was only when he had come to the last word that he could lie back like a weary child, in the arms of his Mother, to be wrapped away at last into the Supreme Revelation, knowing that “all this was but a dream!”

গীতার সেই বেদতুল্য বাক্যের কথা কার না মনে পড়ে?—“কর্ম না করে কোনো ব্যক্তিই নৈষ্কর্ম লাভ করতে পারে না। শুধু কর্মত্যাগ করলেই সিদ্ধিলাভ হয় না!” একইভাবে আমরাও কি নিশ্চিতভাবে জানি না যে এই অভিজ্ঞতার মধ্যে দিয়ে না গেলে অবশেষে সত্যের উপলব্ধি হয় না? শক্তির মাধ্যমে ব্রে পৌঁছতে হবে, নতুন জীবন এবং জ্ঞান, নানা পরিবর্তনের মধ্যে দিয়ে, সংঘাতের মধ্য দিয়ে, অদূর ভবিষ্যতের জয়পরাজয়ের মধ্য দিয়ে অবশেষে আমরা সেই আত্মারূপী নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ে পৌঁছাব, যেখানে সবই এক অখণ্ড সত্তা এবং সবই শান্তি। যে মহান শিক্ষককে আমি অনুসরণ করে এসেছি, তাঁর জীবনের প্রতি যতই গভীরভাবে তাকাই, ততই প্রতিদিন আরও স্পষ্টভাবে বুঝতে পারি যে, তিনি নিজেই অভিজ্ঞতারূপ মহাগ্রন্থের পৃষ্ঠাগুলি কীভাবে উলটে যাচ্ছেন, আর অবশেষে শেষ শব্দটি পড়া হয়ে যেতেই ক্লান্ত শিশুর মতোই মায়ের কোলে শুয়ে মহাসমাধিতে এ কথা জেনে ডুব দিলেন, ‘এইসব কিছু — এই বিচিত্ৰ জীবন স্বপ্ন ছাড়া কিছু নয়।’

Contemporary Bengali Poetry in Translation: A Trajectory of New Worlds

Translated thoughts or poetry in translation? Well, it can be a debatable topic in a seminar. Poetry is essentially an outpouring of “powerful feelings,” language being an equally powerful instrument. The ebb and flow of words, its rhythm and rhyme, and deliberate use of metaphors add to the charm of poetic exuberance. Translation is, without a doubt, an art where the artist paints, delves deep into the world of colors, where heterogeneity is transformed into homogeneous whole in the painter's paradise. “A translation is no translation unless it will give you the music of a poem along with the words of it,” says John Millington Synge. Although it is hard to delineate the exact line of demarcation—how to translate, how much liberty a translator can enjoy, or where translation transcends the original—yet there is no denying the fact that poetry in translation is “an art of re-creation” in a different language.

The history of translation dates back to the 3rd century BCE, when the Old Testament was translated from Hebrew into Greek by scholars to reach out to the populace and to spread the messages of the Bible. Ancient Greek texts were also translated by Roman poets to enrich their literary works. Translation is essentially a metamorphosis where words undergo a process of regeneration. Translating poetry sometimes becomes a rigorous exercise where the translator has to take a verbatim record of words, phrases, expressions, and allusions, in keeping with the predominant theme of the poems. When a poet himself translates his poems, what does he feel? Tagore himself tried to give an answer to this question: “At least it is never the function of a poet to personally help in the transportation of his poems to an alien form and atmosphere. To the end of my days I should have felt happy and contented to think that the translations I did were merely for private recreation and never for public display if you did not bring them before your readers.”

This dichotomy between translation and re-creation has been and, perhaps, will remain until doomsday. But we must admit that translation builds a sociocultural bridge that enables the readers to share vignettes of a cosmopolitan world of poetry. If we look at Tagore’s poems, we can feel the translations never reached the zenith compared to their original, yet those literary creations irrevocably touched the minds of readers who could, at least, taste the flavor of poetry, though in a different form. Literature is in a constant flux, it keeps changing with time, and poetry is no exception. But it’s a pity that our intelligentsia, more often than not, are still confined to Tagore’s poems in translation. Jibanananda Das, Shakti Chattopadhyay, Subhas Mukhopadbyay, Purnendu Patri—have they gone into oblivion?

Tagore Literary Prize–winning poet Kiriti Sengupta has tried to find an answer to this rhetorical question. Much known for his original work written in the English language, Sengupta has entered the world of translation (of contemporary Bengali poetry) since 2013. While going through the translated poems, readers feel the delicacy and subtlety with which he has fine-tuned the verses.

A translator re-creates, and in the process a new line is born: from the dark caverns, verses come out in clear daylight. Images remain the same, words are given new life: “ I can see the inflamed body of / my lifeless dream / It has its flow, however, / and floats in every direction as the flood sets in .” While keeping the imagery intact, Sengupta has shrugged off its ornamentation, making the readers more familiar with the undercurrent that flows within the verses. Literature, being a mirror image of life, tries to bring out our passionate, pulsating heart, at times, in the form of verses. Our desires come out effortlessly, and we enter a world of Keatsian sensuousness: “ Exchanging the sensuous words of conjugal act / return home the unimpressive ladies. / . . . instead of becoming a priest / I turn a tantric, desire-filled / say, is it feasible to stay unchanged ?” Sumita’s verses touch our heart, as we feel the ardent desire of a lover, craving for a gentle touch, “ The pleasure derived from your moist touch / soft, sweet . . . exuding the aroma of food grains .” Sumita’s burning desire is reflected in the amorous verses; but the poems transcend the carnal world and aim to travel “beyond love,” clearly indicating a metaphysical world of poetry. The translated verses lay bare a lovelorn soul, and we feel the fragrance of fresh water flowing down the stream of life, with a passionate heart incarnate.

Poetry, in spite of being a composite art, is never complete. Images flow in a stream; readers deconstruct the poem, and in the process poetry is given a new lease on life. While translating poetry, Sengupta has remained a catalyst, looking into the poems with a dispassionate eye; yet the lines he has scribbled have become a passionate exercise: “ You the earth, moan aloud / like the lunatic talk with thy self, / I find you like the very touch . . . / I hide my grief as I enter into the story / of the water and the bridge ” (“Lunatic”).

“ I don’t want you to become alone / no one wants to be alone / you would feel sad if you become one ” (“Monsoon”). The agony of separation is felt; a splash of rain ignites memories of ecstatic moments.

We do need many monsoons to recuperate; our sweetest moments too take time to sink into oblivion. The intimate details embedded in the first-person narrative mesmerize readers: “ I don’t desire to see you too lonely! / No one can live alone here actually / Old times may haunt . . . memories may revisit .” In a slightly different vein the poet pinpoints the sordid, the real. A sense of bereavement haunts Bibhas; the verses bear solemn silence and a delicate touch, where emptiness is part of our existence.

“ Ma weeps as she hugs my daughter / Baba is dead, the mango tree does not exist, /and so is the Bakul tree that died in the flood. / They perhaps safeguarded her /at every possible border / Ma now survives with the magic of emptiness ” (“Ma Won’t Agree”). We are mere voyagers, traveling through the labyrinth of solitude. Bibhas draws a sepulcher where death is the ultimate reality, signifying nothingness. The poems betray a replica of life, when food is a luxury that people can’t afford: “ I’ve fed my appetite long ago /as I sold my sweat and labor / Unfed children with their skeletal frame / haunt me in my dreams while I’m asleep ” (“My Country”). Images of poverty-stricken India, a sense of guilt, and a cry for emancipation—all these are presented in the poetic frame, making readers uneasy. Annihilation is not the final note. In spite of shedding tears in private, we fight back and enjoy life as it comes, poetry being an incentive. Sengupta acquaints us with the poetry of Bibhas Roy Chowdhury through the medium of translation, and he has built a harmonious bridge between the two languages. What is poetry? Rhymed words, free verse, or both? Sengupta tries to play a lyre where words flow, the strings touch our heart. Poem Continuous is a collection of translated poems that portrays life in its multifarious forms. Here the poems come out as a celebration of life itself, foretelling death as an inevitable natural phenomenon. “ Why are you so worried? / No loss . . . no win . . . / A solitary soul lies intimate / With the mortal being ” (“Odor”). The concept of soul as immortal, even after death, reminds the reader of the Gita, where Lord Krishna opens up a new world to Arjuna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra: “ na hanyate hanyamane shorire ” (the soul never dies; only our mortal frame leads to death). Bibhas Roy Chowdhury envisions a profound philosophy of life through the medium of poetry, which grows along with time; we breathe in the verses, the lines get proper nourishment in the soil, and poetry rejuvenates: “ This is the time to make a promise / To whom and whose words shall I give? / Impossible it seems / without the dreams ” (“Poets and Poems”).

When the poet writes, he can feel exuberance and suffering, words come out from the depth of his heart, and he scribbles life as he sees it. Bibhas Roy Chowdhury’s poems present a panoramic vision of our country: poverty-stricken India, a sense of alienation after the Partition of Bengal, fidelity of human relationships. Translator Kiriti Sengupta has tried to feel the essence of the poems, and his translation has focused on new arenas of poetry, keeping in perfect consonance with the original. Now it’s the need of the hour to keep up the rich heritage of Bengali poetry and enhance the cross-cultural dimensions. Every word that we translate bears fruits of our culture. A translator is a creator, and Sengupta’s translations are the offspring of love’s labor. Translation transcends, it makes us familiar with the outer world, and we travel across the global village with the wings of poetry. As Italo Calvino says, “Without translation, I would be limited to the borders of my own country. The translator is my most important ally. He introduces me to the world.”

Padma Bridge Paragraph

The Padma Multipurpose Bridge is the longest bridge in Bangladesh. On June 25, 2022, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the country’s largest infrastructure. The bridge constructed with concrete and steel. This dream Padma Bridge is the biggest project implemented by Bangladesh without any foreign aid.

The length of the main bridge is 6.15 km and the width is 16.10 m. The bridge connecting Mawa in Munshiganj district to Jajira in Shariatpur district has two layers. It has a four-lane road at the top and a railway at the bottom. The Padma Bridge will be used for rail, gas, power lines and fiber optic cable expansion in the future.

Built at a cost of over Tk 30,000 crore, the bridge is making a significant contribution to the social, economic and industrial development of the southern part of Bangladesh. The bridge is playing an important role not only in the country but also in the regional connectivity of Asia and Southeast Asia.

পদ্মা বহুমুখী সেতু বাংলাদেশের দীর্ঘতম সেতু। ২৫ জুন, ২০২২ এ, প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা দেশের বৃহত্তম এ অবকাঠামো উদ্বোধন করেন। সেতুটি কংক্রিট ও স্টিল দিয়ে নির্মিত। স্বপ্নের এই পদ্মা সেতু কোনো বৈদেশিক সাহায্য ছাড়াই বাংলাদেশের বাস্তবায়িত সবচেয়ে বড় প্রকল্প।

মূল সেতুর দৈর্ঘ্য ৬.১৫ কিমি এবং প্রস্থ ১০.১০ মিটার। মুন্সীগঞ্জ জেলার মাওয়া থেকে শরীয়তপুর জেলার জাজিরা সংযোগকারী সেতুটির দুটি স্তর (তলা) রয়েছে। এর উপরের দিকে একটি চার লেনের রাস্তা এবং নীচে একটি রেলপথ রয়েছে। পদ্মা সেতু ভবিষ্যতে রেল, গ্যাস, পাওয়ার লাইন এবং ফাইবার অপটিক কেবল সম্প্রসারণে ব্যবহার করা হবে।

৩০,০০০ কোটি টাকারও বেশি ব্যয়ে নির্মিত সেতুটি বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলের সামাজিক, অর্থনৈতিক ও শিল্প উন্নয়নে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রাখছে। সেতুটি শুধু দেশেই নয়, এশিয়া ও দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার আঞ্চলিক যোগাযোগের ক্ষেত্রেও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখছে।
