The admit card for the famous IGNOU PhD program for the 2023 session has been made available by the university. Instructions pertaining to Reservation of Seats, Fees, general eligibility criteria and Exam pattern for PhD Entrance Test – 2023

• Submission of application for PhD Programme will be online only. The candidate can only apply for one Programme as the Entrance Test shall be conducted for all the Programmes on the same day.
• Application Fee for  submission of online application is  Rs 1000.  
• Application fee is  non-refundable.
• The number of seats to be advertised in different categories (GEN/OBC/SC/ST/EWS) is as per the Reservation Policy for Research Degree Programmes and DOPT,Govt of India .norms amended from time to time.  Appendix II of the Information Brochure  may be referred in this regard. 
• No request for   change in reservation category,   shall be entertained once the application has been successfully submitted.
• Five percent (5%) seats shall be reserved for Persons with Disabilities (with not less than 40% disability). However such candidates shall be adjusted against the appropriate category (Gen/SC/ST/OBC/EWS) to which they belong (Ref.Annexure II of Information Brochure 2023).
• Candidates awarded with fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC- CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and similar National level tests, as per the validity specified by the regulatory bodies, shall be exempted from Entrance Test and their selection will be based on interview. These candidates shall be considered as Category- A. Such candidates have to upload their valid fellowship award letter from the concerned implementing / awarding agency.
• For Category A Candidates , interview shall carry 100% weightage. All eligible candidates from Category A will be called for the interview.
• For Category B Candidates , the Entrance Test shall carry a weightage of 70% and 30% weightage shall be given to the interview. Those who secure at least 50% marks in the Entrance Test (45% marks in case of SC/ST/OBC (Non Creamy layers) / Differently abled persons and EWS) will be shortlisted for the interview in order of merit subject to the maximum limit of five times of the available seats.

Stage II: Interview:

• Eligible candidates from Category A & Category B shall be called for interview before the Discipline Specific Admission committee. Information in this regard shall be uploaded on the University website. The respective disciplines/ schools will communicate regarding the requirement for the interview.
• The interview shall have three components comprising Research Methodology (40%) Subject domain (40%) and Communication Skills (20%).
• Admission to the Ph.D Degree Programmes is strictly on merit, based on the performance in the Entrance Test and Interview taken together.
• A candidate will be eligible for admission and registration for the PhD programme, on the fulfillment of the following conditions :
• Candidates who have completed:
• A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
• A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade is allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision as per the decision of the UGC from time to time. Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
• A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.

In case, a candidate does not meet these minimum eligibility criteria and appears in the written examination, it is at the candidate’s own risk and cost, and if at any stage, it is found that the minimum eligibility requirements are not fulfilled, the admission, if granted, shall be cancelled ipso facto.

• a) The syllabus of the Entrance Test is as per the ‘University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022 comprising 50% on Research methodology and 50% on specific subject. The syllabus for each discipline is annexed at Appendix III of information brochure.
• b)  The question paper shall have questions consisting of  50% on research methodology and 50% on specific subject .

Thesis Submission

The thesis will be assessed by three External Experts nominated by the Vice Chancellor from a list of seven experts provided by the Supervisor/s through the School Board. In the case of MPhil, the dissertation will be evaluated by one external examiner nominated by the Vice Chancellor from a list of at least five experts submitted by the supervisor through the School Board. The Examiner/s' reports should be submitted using the provided format.

Course work

When your Research Project is approved, the Doctoral Committee may also require you to complete Course work that relates to the research's focus areas and research methodology. The specifics of this Course Work, how it will be evaluated, and the schedule for teaching it will be provided by the Research Programme Coordinator. Mostly, Course Work is assigned to candidates applying for admission to the MPhil program. It's also assigned to PhD candidates who haven't completed an MPhil. However, the Doctoral Committee may assign Course Work to PhD candidates who have already completed an MPhil as well.

Viva Examinations

For Ph.D. candidates, the viva-voce examination will be conducted at IGNOU. A panel will oversee this examination, consisting of an external examiner appointed by the Vice Chancellor, along with your principal supervisor who acts as the convener. The Director of the concerned department will be the panel's Chairperson. The date, venue, and thesis topic along with a brief abstract will be communicated to the Research Unit. This information will also be made widely available to encourage broader participation in the session. To successfully complete the MPhil program, you need to secure a minimum of 50% marks in each course, 50% in your dissertation work, and 50% in the viva-voce examination.

IGNOU Ph.D. Entrance Exam 2024

IGNOU PhD Entrance Exam 2024 will be conducted on 07 January 2024 by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The test will be conducted in various centers across the country. Anyone intending to be admitted to the IGNOU Ph.D. program under any specialization is required to take the test. The minimum eligibility criteria to take the test is that the candidates must have a PG or MPhil degree from a UGC-recognized institution.

IGNOU PhD Result 2024

IGNOU PhD Result 2024-25  has been released on 28 February 2024* . Candidates can check their results by going to the university's official website @ignou.ac.in . Students who have appeared in the entrance exam must wait until the university releases the results. The university took the IGNOU entrance exam 2024 to be announced very soon for the January 2024 session. Students can check the Ignou University official web portal.

Students who enrolled in the entrance test need an enrollment number to check their IGNOU entrance test results from the official website. Once the university Declares the result, Candidates who qualify for the university will connect with all the candidates for a personal interview. Can I pursue two courses simultaneously from IGNOU?

Two Courses Together from IGNOU – Many of the students are eager to know that is it legal or possible to do two-degree courses at the same time so here is the answer of it. As per the current rules and regulations of UGC (University Grants Commission), the student can now do two-degree courses at the same time which is applicable for a regular course as well as a distance course. There are many UGC notifications and updates now available on this topic with official dates which you can read on this page.

As per the UGC Circular dated 30th September 2022 , the students can now pursue two full-time courses at the same time. These guidelines will be applicable to those students who either want to pursue two regular degree courses together or two distance degree courses together. Therefore, It is now valid to do two-degree courses together in the same mode of study like Online, Distance, or Regular.

Latest Update – As per the most recent clarification from UGC on 9th September 2022, the degree completed through distance as well as the online mode will be treated equivalent to the regular degrees so now no one can create differentiations between distance and regular degrees.

As per the UGC Notification dated 8th June 2020 , the candidates were able to pursue two-degree courses at the same time but one course must be regular and one course must be distance. In short, the candidates can now do two-degree courses together with the same or different institutions but the type of degree (distance or regular) must be different.

UGC Rules are Applicable for IGNOU University too – Earlier before the new announcement from UGC, simultaneously pursuing two academic courses either from IGNOU University was not permitted but one from IGNOU and the other from Regular University (regular or face-to-face mode) was permitted as per revised rules including Certificate Programmes of 6 months duration. After the most recent notification on 30th September 2022, IGNOU students can now also do two regular courses as well as two distance courses at the same time.

Many of the students are aware that the previous rules of UGC abandoned students from doing two-degree courses at the same time and according to the previous rule of UGC If a student is found to be completed two distance courses or two regular courses in the same academic year or time then one of them will be marked as invalid. Therefore, doing more than one course at a time resulted in difficulties when applying for further studies or jobs. Earlier, IGNOU also advised students that he/she will do only one course at a time and then apply for another course after the declaration of results. Now, everything is changed now and students should follow the latest notification of UGC.

The current rule of simultaneous registration is applied for certificate courses as well which you can understand here with more details. Students who are already enrolled in a program of one-year duration or longer can also simultaneously register themselves for any certificate course of 6 months duration. Candidates have to note that if any clash of dates of counseling or examination time table between the two courses taken, IGNOU will be not responsible to make an adjustment or shifting the dates of it.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University, IGNOU, has extended the last date for fresh admissions and re-registration for the July 2024 session. The new deadline is now August 31. This extension applies to all programmes offered in both ODL and online modes.

The previous deadline had been August 14, which has now been pushed back to August 31.
