Wonderful World English

Meet My Family – Free Lesson Plan & PPT for ESL Teachers

family members presentation

Meet  David De’ Ath , co-founder, editor, and writer at Wonderful World English. With his extensive background as an English teacher, David provides valuable insights and practical tips on ESL for students and teachers alike.

If you’re an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher or a teacher of young learners looking for some tips and materials on teaching the subject of families and family trees, you’re in the right place!

This lesson is an important aspect of English language learning, especially for young learners, as it helps them build comprehension of everyday family words.

From basic words like “me,” “mom,” and “dad” to terms like “family tree” and “baby cousin,” this lesson is a must for any young learner in an ESL curriculum.

Teachers should include materials and visual prompts to teach a lesson on families and family trees effectively. The goal is for students to understand and produce the vocabulary and be able to answer the question, “Who’s this?”. Teachers can use TPR well and keep the lesson fun and engaging.

I am an experienced ESL teacher who has taught this lesson to families many times; it is good fun and great to have in a student’s English toolkit.

I have provided the materials I use for this lesson, along with the PPT and lesson plan for you below, for free!

Feel free to use these materials in your classroom; you can add or take away anything to your class however you see fit.

Let’s jump in!

family members presentation

Family Tree ESL Lesson

This lesson is a staple in any English curriculum.

Learners need to understand the vocabulary associated with family members at a basic level before moving on to more complicated areas.

Students typically love to get involved and discuss their parents or siblings, so this lesson can be a lot of fun.

With the right mix of games and activities, songs, and movies, this will surely be a success.

Below, we will look at the lesson plan on the subject of families for a 45-minute class for young ESL learners, as well as some materials and games to include.

Here is the lesson plan:

1. Lesson Plan

This lesson is focused on the key sentence: “How does it taste?”, and teaches students to reply with “It’s sour,” “It’s spicy,” “It’s sweet,” or “It’s salty.”

This lesson is for very basic-level English learners, so I don’t overwhelm them.

If you believe your students can handle a little more, then go ahead and include more vocabulary, such as “it’s bitter” or “it’s delicious,” for example.

This plan should be used as a guide to accompany the PPT supplied below:

Meet My Family

Objective: To teach ESL students family-related vocabulary, foster comprehension, and enable them to talk about their family in English.

You will need An interactive whiteboard for the PPT, a whiteboard/blackboard to keep score of points, paper, pencils, and flashcards of family vocabulary (optional).

1. Introduction (5 minutes):

  • Greetings and classroom rule review.
  • Split the class into teams (e.g., boys vs. girls or by the row they are sitting in).
  • Review content from your previous lesson (if applicable).

2. New Topic Introduction (3 minutes):

  • Introduce the new topic: “Family.”
  • Show a basic family tree diagram and explain the concept.

3. Family Vocabulary (8 minutes):

  • Introduce family vocabulary words like mother, father, sister, brother, etc.
  • Show pictures of family members and ask, “Who is this?”

4. Family Tree Exploration (3 minutes):

  • Show a more detailed family picture and explain relationships like grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
  • Encourage students to identify relationships on the family tree.
  • Invite students to point at the family member and produce the language; give points to whoever does this well.

5. Play movie (4 minutes):

  • Play a relevant movie to boost comprehension.

6. Make a family tree (8 minutes):

  • Show students a family tree and discuss.
  • Hand out blank pieces of paper and have students fill in the names or pictures of their family members.

8. Present (10 minutes):

  • Select a few students to come to the front and present their family tree to the class.
  • Ask questions related to the family tree and award points for correct answers.
  • Students can produce sentences such as “This is my mom. She is beautiful,” for example.

9. Wrap-up and Rewards (4 minutes):

  • Review all the new language and relationships discussed in the lesson.
  • Congratulate the winning team; small rewards such as stickers can be an excellent token of appreciation.

You can use  YouTube , copyright-free images on sites like Canva, or check out useful platforms such as  Teachers Pay Teachers .

Make sure to use appropriate and relevant resources to make sure your class is fun and engaging.

It is great to make the most of flash cards and props in ESL lessons.

And if your school has materials you can use, be sure to make the most of them!

The video below is great for teaching the subject of families and has all the key vocabulary needed for this lesson:

Any eye-catching video or song on the subject will keep your students captivated and more receptive to retaining the newly learned language.

These are some lesson ideas when you wanna teach about family members

I suggest starting this class by brainstorming how much students know about the topic or you can use this wordle and ask what words they know.

Family Members

Another great teaching idea that you can use to introduce the topic is through a video, You can pause and ask your students to predict what word will be introduced next

Another great teaching idea to introduce the topic is using a  Family Members Flashcard Set, you can project the information using a video beam or you can send the link to the students so they can practice the spelling and learn the pronunciation of the target vocabulary.

  • Show students a picture of a family tree and ask them to make sentences about family relationships using that specific family tree.
  • Ask students to create a conversation in which they talk about their family members.
  • If you have cellphones, ask students to prepare a collage with pictures of their relatives so they can come to class and talk about their families.

You can also tell your students to make a bingo with the family members’ vocabulary.

Consider spending some money on some prizes to reward the winners.

If students have cell phones, consider using My Free Bingo Cards

Changes to Medicare Part D in 2024 and 2025 Under the Inflation Reduction Act and How Enrollees Will Benefit

Juliette Cubanski and Tricia Neuman Published: Apr 20, 2023

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 includes several provisions to lower prescription drug costs for people with Medicare and reduce drug spending by the federal government, including a number of changes to the Medicare Part D drug benefit . These changes include a cap on out-of-pocket drug spending for enrollees in Medicare Part D plans and requiring Part D plans and drug manufacturers to pay a greater share of costs for Part D enrollees with high drug costs. This brief provides an overview of the Part D benefit design and Part D enrollee cost-sharing requirements in 2023 and changes coming in 2024 and 2025.

What Does the Medicare Part D Benefit Look Like in 2023?

The standard design of the Medicare Part D benefit currently has four distinct phases, where the share of drug costs paid by Part D enrollees, Part D plans, drug manufacturers, and Medicare varies (Figure 1). (The Part D enrollee shares reflect costs paid by enrollees who are not receiving low-income subsidies.)

  • In the deductible phase, Part D enrollees pay 100% of their drug costs, up to $505 in 2023. Not all Part D plans charge a deductible, but many enrollees in stand-alone PDPs are in a plan that charges the standard deductible in 2023.
  • In the initial coverage phase, Part D enrollees pay 25% of total drug costs and Part D plans pay 75%, up to total drug costs of $4,660 in 2023. However, most Part D plans charge a mix of copayments and coinsurance in this phase rather than a standard 25% coinsurance rate.
  • In the coverage gap phase, Part D enrollees pay 25% of total drug costs for both brand-name and generic drugs. Part D plans pay the remaining 75% of generic drug costs and 5% of brand drug costs, and drug manufacturers provide a 70% price discount on brands (there is no manufacturer price discount on generics).
  • In the catastrophic phase, Medicare pays 80% of total drug costs (known as “reinsurance”), Part D plans pay 15%, and Part D enrollees pay 5%. Part D enrollees qualify for catastrophic coverage when the amount that they pay out of pocket plus the value of the manufacturer discount on the price of brand-name drugs in the coverage gap phase exceeds a certain threshold amount. In 2023, the catastrophic threshold is set at $7,400, and enrollees themselves will pay about $3,100 out of pocket before reaching the catastrophic phase (this estimate is based on using brand drugs only).

How Is the Medicare Part D Benefit Changing in 2024?

In 2024, costs in the catastrophic phase will change: the 5% coinsurance requirement for Part D enrollees will be eliminated and Part D plans will pay 20% of total drug costs in this phase instead of 15%.

The 5% coinsurance requirement for Part D enrollees in the catastrophic phase will be eliminated

In 2024, once Part D enrollees without low-income subsidies (LIS) have drug spending high enough to qualify for catastrophic coverage, they will no longer be required to pay 5% of their drug costs, which in effect means that out-of-pocket spending for Part D enrollees will be capped. In 2024, the catastrophic threshold will be set at $8,000. This amount includes what Part D enrollees spend out of pocket plus the value of the manufacturer price discount on brands in the coverage gap phase. At this amount, Part D enrollees who take only brand-name drugs in 2024 will have spent about $3,300 out of their own pockets and will then face no additional costs for their medications.

Part D plans will pay a somewhat larger share of total drug costs above the catastrophic threshold

With the elimination of the 5% coinsurance requirement for Part D enrollees in the catastrophic coverage phase, Part D plans will be required to pay 20% of total drug costs in this phase in 2024, up from 15% in 2023 and prior years.

How Is the Medicare Part D Benefit Changing in 2025?

Changes in 2025 include a new $2,000 out-of-pocket spending cap, elimination of the coverage gap phase, a higher share of drug costs paid by Part D plans in the catastrophic phase, along with a new manufacturer price discount and reduced liability for Medicare in this phase, and changes to plan costs and the manufacturer price discount in the initial coverage phase.

Out-of-pocket drug spending will be capped at $2,000

Beginning in 2025, Part D enrollees’ out-of-pocket drug costs will be capped at $2,000. This amount will be indexed to rise each year after 2025 at the rate of growth in per capita Part D costs. (This cap does not apply to out-of-pocket spending on Part B drugs.)

The coverage gap phase will be eliminated

The coverage gap phase, where Part D enrollees had faced 100% of their total drug costs under the original Part D benefit design and currently face 25% of costs for brand and generic drugs, will be eliminated in 2025. This means that Part D enrollees will no longer face a change in their cost sharing for a given drug when they move from the initial coverage phase to the coverage gap phase, which is the case in most Part D plans today, since most plans charge varying cost-sharing amounts , rather than the standard 25% coinsurance, in the initial coverage phase.

Part D plans and drug manufacturers will pay a larger share of costs for catastrophic coverage, and Medicare will pay a smaller share

Part d plans and manufacturers will face changes to their share of total drug costs paid in the initial coverage phase.

Drug manufacturers will be required to provide a 10% discount on brand-name drugs in the initial coverage phase beginning in 2025, replacing the 70% price discount in the coverage gap phase under the current benefit design. Part D plans will pay 65% of brand-name drug costs.

What Other Changes Are Being Made to Part D?

  • As of 2023, the out-of-pocket cost of insulin products is limited to no more than $35 per month in all Part D plans. In addition, adult vaccines covered under Part D, such as the shingles vaccine, are covered with no cost sharing.
  • Starting in 2024, people with Medicare who have incomes up to 150% of poverty and resources at or below the limits for partial low-income subsidy benefits will be eligible for full benefits under the Part D Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) Program. The law eliminates the partial LIS benefit currently in place for individuals with incomes between 135% and 150% of poverty.
  • Also starting in 2024, the calculation of the base beneficiary premium will be adjusted, as needed, to limit increases in the base premium to no more than 6% from the prior year. (Premiums for individual Part D plan premiums and annual plan-level premium increases will continue to vary, however.)
  • Starting in 2025, Part D enrollees will have the option of spreading out their out-of-pocket costs over the year rather than face high out-of-pocket costs in any given month.

Methods
To illustrate the impact of eliminating the 5% coinsurance requirement in 2024, we used data from the dataset to identify the top five drugs in 2021 with the highest per capita total Part D spending used by more than 10,000 enrollees. The five drugs—all cancer treatments—are:

We then used the online to identify annual out-of-pocket costs for these medications in 2023 at a large national retail pharmacy chain in zip codes 94107 (San Francisco, CA) and 46202 (Indianapolis, IN). We identified annual out-of-pocket costs for each drug in the plan that offered the lowest annual total drug costs, including premiums, based on the default drug dosage information in the plan compare tool. The annual out-of-pocket cost for each drug did not vary geographically based on these zip codes. We separated annual out-of-pocket drug costs into the portion paid below and above the catastrophic threshold. Out-of-pocket amounts shown in Figure 2 reflect costs for the drug alone, excluding Part D premiums, and do not include costs for other drugs that users of these drugs might be taking. Total annual out-of-pocket costs in 2023 may be higher in other Part D plans or at other pharmacies.

For 2024, we used the standard Part D benefit parameters to identify how much a Part D enrollee would pay in out-of-pocket costs for a brand-name drug below the catastrophic threshold. For each of these drugs, Part D enrollees would reach the catastrophic threshold in one month.

Simone Biles and Team USA win gold in women's gymnastics team final at 2024 Olympics

By Christopher Brito , Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: July 30, 2024 / 8:02 PM EDT / CBS News

Days after an injury scare, Simone Biles and her U.S. women's artistic gymnastics teammates took home the gold in the team finals. It was their  first medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics  and marked an incredible comeback for the history-making athlete and for Team USA.

Italy took second place, ending the finals with 165.494 points to Team USA's 171.296. It was Italy's first Olympic medal for women's gymnastics in almost a century. Brazil's team won bronze, finishing just shy of a point behind Italy, for their first medal ever in women's gymnastics.

The women's artistic gymnastics team final  took place Tuesday at Bercy Arena and featured Biles along with her American teammates Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Sunisa Lee.  It was an important contest for the American athletes, who are all returning to the Olympics this year after appearing in previous Games, and especially for Biles, who was forced to leave the competition in 2020 because of a dangerous mental block that prompted her to take herself out of the running.

Biles and Chiles took part in the uneven bars, vault, balance beam and floor exercise events, while Lee competed in every round except the vault, which was Carey's only event. Just one member of Team USA didn't participate in Tuesday's competition — 16-year-old Hezly Rivera, who's making her Olympic debut this year and still accepted a gold medal alongside her teammates at the awards ceremony.

Team USA was heavily favored to win the finals, after earning back-to-back gold at the Summer Games in London and Rio in 2012 and 2016, and capturing a silver medal in the team competition in Tokyo last time around.

After delivering standout routines on the vault, uneven bars and beam, Team USA performed their anticipated floor exercises in the gymnastics final's fourth and last rotation. An American trio of Olympic veterans was expected to command the floor, with Biles at the helm, and all three did their part to rise to the occasion.

Lee was the first American gymnast to perform on the floor and completed a strong routine with visible excitement as she left the mat. Her family cheered uproariously from the stands, as did the rest of the stadium. Lee earned an impressive 13.9 for the exercise, which is evaluated out of 14 points. Chiles nailed her floor routine, too, inching closer to that perfect score with 13.966.

Biles closed out the finals with a spectacular floor routine performed to a full-on standing ovation. It was arguably the most anticipated showing of Tuesday's team competition, and Biles delivered. Her routine included several of Biles' trademarked gymnastics moves, including her first namesake, a double layout with a half-twist, and a triple-double.

The exercise had solidified Team USA's victory before Biles' score was even revealed. She blew a kiss to the crowd as people chanted, "USA!"

Earlier, Biles' bar routine prompted roiling applause from a crowd that included Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps and movie director Spike Lee. Lee and Biles both delivered solid performances on the balance beam that earned high marks, critically, after Chiles fell from the equipment during her beam routine, which came before theirs. Her fall was the only notable error from Team USA throughout the finals, where the American athletes brought top-tier routines that continued to push them ahead of their competitors in every round.

Team USA — which took top scores in the qualification session over the weekend — competed in the final against gymnasts from seven other teams that placed highly in the qualifiers: Italy, China, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Britain and Romania. The finals call for three gymnasts from each team to compete in each gymnastics category.

Lee is the reigning all-around champion. But in the team finals, all three gymnasts' scores are considered together. Those parameters make the final especially challenging, since they leave little room for error by any contending athlete, raising the stakes from qualifiers where all four athletes competed and the lowest-scoring athlete's marks were dropped from the team total.

Biles, 27, made her highly anticipated return last weekend in the qualifying rounds and dominated, despite a calf injury that caused her to limp. Women's gymnastics coach Cecille Landi, a former Olympian for France, told reporters after the qualifying session that Biles had tweaked her calf a few weeks ago and was on the mend.

The coach noted that Biles had no intention to leave the competition, saying, "Never in her mind."

TOPSHOT-GYMNASTICS-ARTISTIC-OLY-PARIS-2024-MEDALS

Team USA finished Sunday's qualification session with an impressive score of 172.296, putting them at the front of the pack heading into the final, with Biles herself leaving qualifiers as the leading individual scorer across all of the competing teams.

Biles, heralded as the Greatest of All Time, or G.O.A.T., in gymnastics, is currently in her third Olympics. It's her first since experiencing the "twisties," a phenomenon where gymnasts lose their sense of place in the air, which forced her to  drop out of multiple events  during the Tokyo Olympics.

Tuesday's win makes Biles the most decorated American Olympic gymnast, surpassing Shannon Miller's seven-medal haul, with the team gold her eighth Olympic medal. That also ties her with Anton Heida, a 1904 Olympian, for the most gold medals earned by an American gymnast.
