Fashion is most often thought of as a global industry that is invested in anticipating what we wear and how we wish to appear to others. But fashion isn’t just a business. It’s also a cultural and social phenomenon, driven by the desire for the new. As such, the industry can never fully control fashion: fashion is all about being open to change.

Let's take a look at some of the different aspects of fashion... 1. The 'new' Christian Dior ’s first couture collection was unveiled on February 12, 1947. It presented two lines named 8 and Corolle , referring to the corolla of a flower which is the botanical term for its petals. The bar suit was, in essence, an upside-down flower. The full pleated skirt, fine black wool crêpe over a stiffened taffeta petticoat, is the corolla, and the natural silk tussore jacket, tightly fitted at the waist and extending out over padded hips, is the sepal (the green protective layer that surrounds the petals).

But all the references to botany were scrambled as the show ended and Carmel Snow, editor-in-chief of American Harper’s Bazaar, exclaimed to Dior, "It's quite a revelation, dear Christian. Your dresses have such a new look!". A correspondent for Reuters news agency wired the quote, quickly spreading the revised name for the collection that changed the course of postwar women’s fashion. The New Look , as it is still known, continues to symbolize fashion as seasonal change and the 'newest thing'; but it also illustrates how turning clothes into fashion requires a degree of transformation. What we know about fashion is partly formed by the materiality of dress and the experience of wearing clothes, but much more is learned from its translation into words and images – how it gets communicated.

2. Experimentation and adaptation Fashion often promotes ideals that are unattainable to the many, and accessible to the few. Yet fashion also has the capacity to make the marginalized feel that they can participate. For example, through vogueing, which came out of the New York gay balls of the early 1990s, black and latino gay men appropriated the elite fashions presented in the pages of Vogue magazine.

Youth style magazines, such as i-D , turned their back on mainstream and elitist fashion in favor of styles that foregrounded the themes of gender, sexuality, and ethnicity. In the 1991 editorial Strictly , black male models wearing Savile Row tailoring and traditional separates paraded in front of suburban mock Tudor housing: as a knowing commentary on a sense of place and belonging in multicultural Britain. Now, in 2017, one of the models, Edward Enninful , has been appointed editor of British Vogue. What was once marginal becomes the new cultural center.

Find Your Place at FIT

Find a major that fits your interests in our Program Finder before submitting your application. 

Step One: File the   SUNY Application Online  

After you apply, you’ll receive confirmation that your application has been received. The first notification will come from the SUNY Application Services Center.

The second confirmation will be sent from FIT to the email address you put on your SUNY application and will contain your username and password for your   MyFIT  account. It can take 7-10 days to receive the email from FIT after submitting the SUNY application.

FIT takes various measures to protect personal data, including fulfilling its obligations under federal, state, and local law, as well as under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation to the extent it is applicable.  The GDPR provides protections for various information and records while a person is located in the EU.  FIT provides notice to students, employees, and website users of what type of data FIT processes and how and why that data is used and shared through information posted on the   GDPR page   of   FIT’s Privacy website .  Please review the applicable notice(s) carefully.  The   Privacy website   also contains useful information about other privacy policies, such as FERPA and Information Technology’s Privacy Policy, and terms and conditions for the use of the FIT website and social media. 

Step Two: Submit Your Supplemental Materials

After receiving the initial confirmation from FIT, you will receive a second email providing an individualized link to submit your essay, and, if you are a transfer student, a list of your in-progress courses.  

Your essay should answer the following questions:

• What makes you a perfect candidate for FIT?
• Why are you interested in the major you are applying to?

The essay is your chance to tell us more about your experiences, activities, and accomplishments. (No more than 750 words, please.)

If you are a transfer student, you will be prompted to submit information about your in-progress courses, including course name and numbering and the name of the school you are currently attending.

Arrange to have all official secondary and post-secondary transcripts sent directly from your schools to FIT. Electronic delivery of transcripts will be the quickest way to receive and process your documents. The Admissions office will accept electronic transcripts from the following approved vendors:

• National Student Clearinghouse
• Naviance by Hobsons

Transcripts may also be sent by mail in a sealed envelope to: Fashion Institute of Technology Office of Admissions, Room C139  227 West 27th Street New York City 10001-5992

Transcripts received by mail require additional processing time and may delay the completion of your application.

FIT will only accept academic documents that have been officially attested (bearing the stamp and signature of the Registrar or designated officer) by the issuing institution or awarding authority.

Documents from all institutions must be provided (with no exceptions), regardless of the type of institution, subjects taken, or their relevance to FIT. Such documents should include all subjects taken, all grades/marks earned, and any degrees awarded. If you are a high school student earning college credit, please forward a transcript from the awarding college or university.

Home-schooled applicants are encouraged to review the  SUNY Requirements for Degree Conferral and Enrollment of Home Schooled Students  for providing appropriate proof of graduation.

Official AP and/or CLEP scores, if any, are required when available. Official IB (International Baccalaureate) diplomas or certificates, if any, must be provided by the IBO.

International applicants: If you have studied abroad, or you attended secondary or post-secondary school(s) outside the U.S., please submit your academic documents from schools outside the U.S. to a member of the  National Association of Credential Evaluation Services , not to FIT. See  Undergraduate International Applicants  for more information on submitting transcripts. 

To be considered for admission to Film and Media or any major in the School of Art and Design , you must submit a portfolio for evaluation by FIT faculty members . You will be invited to submit your portfolio once your SUNY application has been received and processed by FIT. Please do not submit any artwork with your application.

School of Business and Technology applicants may not submit a portfolio and materials received for these majors will not be reviewed or considered.

If your first language is not English, you must provide an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score, a Pearson Test of English (PTE) score, or a Duolingo English Test score—regardless of how long you have lived in the United States. SAT and ACT test scores are not required for admissions purposes. For Fall 2022, they are optional for the Presidential Scholars (Honors) program.

If submitted, SAT and ACT test scores will be used for placement into Math classes at FIT. Use FIT school code 2257 when sending SAT scores and code 2744 when sending ACT scores. Visit Placement Tests  for more information.

International Students who have not taken the SAT or ACT exams will take  Placement Tests  before registering for any English, Math, and Science courses.

After finally ditching his daily navy tees to show off more of his personal style, Mark Zuckerberg is taking his fashion journey a step further.

It seems like the internet can't get enough of the Meta CEO's new look, whether he's seen in a new gold chain or anything other than a blank T-shirt and jeans.

And it looks like Zuck is leaning in. We can officially add "fashion designer" to his long list of achievements.

When a user posted on Threads that they wanted to find the shirt he was wearing in a video, Zuckerberg responded, "I designed it myself."

The Meta CEO was once known as the Facebook kid who only wore hoodies and blue jeans. Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in June that Zuckerberg spent the majority of his career wearing "the same thing every day for a long time" to save his energy.

But now, at 40, Zuck is dabbling in designing clothes and jewelry, and his company has even got a high-tech eyewear line with Ray-Ban.

The gold chains have a deeper meaning.

Zuckerberg's gold chains were, perhaps, the catalyst for his new style reputation when he first started wearing them.

Earlier this year, a picture of him in a gold necklace became a viral sensation. Since then, Mark has made his own gold chain meme (using Meta AI, of course.)

But the chains have a bigger purpose than upping his aura points. In April Zuckerberg said he was working with a jewelry designer to create the perfect gold necklace dedicated to his daughters.

"I'm in the process of designing a long-term chain," he said in an Instagram post.

He went on to say that the chain would be engraved with the prayer he reads to his children. Although he hasn't said he settled on a design, his necklace in recent Instagram posts has a unique pendant.

English translation: "At the age of nineteen, I raised an army by private advice and private expense, by which I reclaimed the state for freedom from the oppression of party rule," according to Google Translate.

He's all about the Meta Ray-Bans.

It's unclear exactly how much say Zuckerberg has on the style of Meta's smart glasses lineup, but he's certainly using his influence to promote the high-tech Ray-Bans.

His Instagram is filled with pics of Zuckerberg in them, and he's also developed a gnarly sunglass tan line to prove his allegiance to his Ray-Bans.

Zuck's followers have been loving his swaggy posts on the 'gram this year. The CEO is showing off the capabilities of his products while serving looks (including surfing in a tux while crushing a beer to celebrate the 4th of July.)

And with such a positive response to his new "drip," it won't be surprising if Zuckerberg keeps pushing into the fashion industry. While his printed tees probably won't be seen on a Fashion Week runway in September, more viral moments are surely in store.

A New Line of Clothes Fit for Magical Rituals, or Just Errands

In T Introduces , a singular talent makes their debut.

While studying fashion at New York’s Parsons School of Design and later London’s Central Saint Martins — from which she graduated in 2019 — the designer Colleen Allen, 28, was drawn to men’s wear. It aligned with her tomboyish personal style (she grew up in Chicago with two older brothers, as well as a younger sister) and, having been taught how to sew as a child by her quilter grandmother, Nana Dot, she was more interested in tailoring than draping. She was also excited by the ways that masculine dress codes were being re-examined at the time, thanks to designers and celebrities such as Jonathan Anderson and Young Thug. “I wanted to be a part of that,” she says, “where it could really feel like you were doing something new.”

Upon leaving school, with an eight-month internship for Raf Simons at Calvin Klein already under her belt, she landed her dream job at the Row, where she helped establish and grow the brand’s men’s wear division. But in 2020, she says, she began to experience “this internal and external world shift where I realized that I wanted to do women’s wear.” Newly fascinated with tarot and the idea of the divine feminine, she was inspired by the Empress and High Priestess cards of the Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington , who, sometime around 1955, painted her own deck.

Allen’s first collection, which she debuted during New York Fashion Week last February, features a cotton velvet cloak with oversize Victorian proportions that looks like something one might wear to perform a ritual ceremony (or in Allen’s case, to run errands around Brooklyn, where she now lives). “It’s about taking up space and becoming this grand and dramatic presence,” she says. The palette of tangerine orange, snow white and blood red — which can also be found in Carrington’s work — is meant to be “energizing, transformational and consciousness elevating.” Allen chose highly textured fabrics for their durable nature and ability to hold deeply saturated color. She used Polartec fleece, for example, to fashion a sharply tailored red maxi-length skirt suit, which is washed to a cashmere-esque texture. “When you step out of your apartment and walk around in a full look like that,” she says, “I really hope it will make you feel like the most magical version of yourself.”

Out of Office: 18 Fashion Designers on Their Favorite Hotels and Resorts Around the World

When it comes to matters of taste, fashion designers tend to be more discerning than most. This is why, when someone in fashion recommends an under-the-radar, family-owned hotel on a craggy Italian isle (see Roger Vivier creative director Gherardo Felloni’s pick), you know it’s worth the trek. For this group, it’s all in the details, whether it’s the striped cabana cushions at Villa Feltrinelli (“perfection” in the eyes of Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon) or the cinematic nature, per Thebe Magugu, of Cape Town’s Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel . (“I feel like a character playing a role whenever I stay,” he says.)

Hotel Esencia

Passalacqua

The minute I step out of the car at Passalacqua, I literally feel myself slip into a different energetic frequency. Everything is better, bouncier, brighter, and more beautiful. It’s so hard to get the mix right at a high-end hotel these days. Most people don’t understand that a truly luxury experience means one-of-a-kind and grand but still small enough that it feels home-y, cozy, and personal. Passalacqua is a blend of the very best of Italy—the beauty, the food, the craftsmanship, the joy, the thousand sensations, which is all down to Valentina and her family. I think she really had a vision of the non-stuffy, non-traditional Como hotel. I mean, who else would have approached a brand like La DoubleJ—wild, a little wacky, with prints that honk very loudly—to work with her on designing the pool area, bar, and glasshouse lounge at the foot of her grand villa? —J.J. Passalacqua in Lake Como, for me, encapsulates the spirit of what I define as the art of a well-dressed life. An effortless elegance permeates the villa—from the architecture, interiors, and color palette to the gardens and mesmerizing view beyond. Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel

Of course, my favorite hotel is the Belmond Mount Nelson in Cape Town. I do some work with them but also can’t bear to stay anywhere else because of its cinematic appearance. It quite literally looks like the type of hotel you would come across in a Wes Anderson film, and as someone who appreciates camp and pomp, I feel like a character playing a role whenever I stay there. The gardens are whimsical, the service is precise, and the staff and teams are the loveliest people you will ever meet. It all culminates in one not wanting to leave. It’s called the Mount Nelson Hotel but many refer to it as “The Pink Lady” or “The Nellie.” —Thebe Magugu

Hotel Il Pellicano

My favorite hotel is Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole. What I love the most about it is the feeling of being out of time in a kind of floating place. True escapism. —Margherita Maccapani Missoni.

My absolute favorite hotel in the world is Nemacolin—a really magical spot in the Laurel Highlands outside of Pittsburgh. The spa can only be described as life-changing, and the scenery is like something out of a storybook—they get the best of all seasons. The owner, Maggie Hardy, has such an extraordinary vision for the property and has brought Wiederhoeft on board for projects like redesigning the staff uniforms and costuming a massive immersive holiday village last year. It’s so inspiring to see the multidisciplinary approach to hospitality—the team is always outdoing themselves. —Jackson Wiederhoeft

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel

One of my favorite hotels in the world is The Carlyle, I love it! I imagine it’s a glimpse of what New York might have been like a long time ago… it’s almost like stepping back in time.  The last time I stayed there I had a room that was more like an apartment. Villa Feltrinelli

It would be a tie between Villa Feltrinelli on Lake Garda in Italy and Hotel La Réserve in Paris. Both have the magical ability to transport you to another world upon entering. The pool at La Réserve is my favorite way to exercise after a busy Parisian day, and the cabana-striped cushions on the steps of Villa F. are perfection. —Wes Gordon

Pardini’s Hermitage

There are so many hotels I love—Hotel Locarno in Rome, the Palace in Montecatini Terme, Il Pellicano in Tuscany—but if I had to pick only one, it would be the Pardini’s Hermitage on the island of Giglio. In this family hotel surrounded by cypresses and the shimmering Mediterranean sea, time stands still. I really enjoy this unique atmosphere where shadowy luscious gardens provide a peaceful haven from the summer’s scorching heat. —Gherardo Felloni

As traveling is basically a hobby of mine, I have a lot of favorite hotels, including the grand dames: Ritz Paris, Claridge’s, and the Hotel Bel-Air. But probably my favorite of all is Amansara in Siem Reap. It’s an extraordinary modernist structure that was once the king’s guest house. Every detail is absolutely perfect, from the 1960s Mercedes to the floral carved soaps in the shower. It is the perfect combination of extraordinary aesthetics, uber luxury, vand perfect service that is super rare in today’s hotel industry. —Adam Lippes

Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc

My favorite hotel is the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. It’s the most magical property and holds some of my favorite memories—I was married there almost exactly 10 years ago! My favorite part of the property is the diving board into the sea. It’s the most stunning view, and nothing can beat how freeing it feels to dive from it. —Nell Diamond

Montage Deer Valley

I love visiting Montage Deer Valley, especially in the winter season. The ski-in/ski-out access makes it so easy to enjoy the slopes, and there’s also an amazing bowling alley on site where we love to make family memories. —Jonathan Simkhai

This place is owned by my friend Olivier, the founder of  Jogging Marseille , and I’m obsessed with it. Whenever you enter, you feel transported out of time, finding yourself in the most romantic setting. It’s a one-bedroom retreat with no services, situated right next to the sea. Hoshinoya Fuji

The magnificent view of Mount Fuji is breathtaking, and the exceptional quality of this renowned Japanese hotel chain makes this place the best for me. It offers an unparalleled experience, combining natural beauty with outstanding service. Staying here provides a feeling of being out of time. —Charlotte Chesnais

My favorite hotel in Paris is Le Meurice, because of Bar 228’s timeless decor and because of the sweetest and passionate team of bartenders. I’ve been coming to Le Meurice for over 20 years—at first, when I was a student, excited by this luxurious place, and later because I moved to Rue Saint-Roch, which is close to the Hotel. I’ve started to do all my press meetings there as a kind of office. With Pascal, one of the head managers of the bar, I always have a nice word with and fun conversation—he remembers what you like and want. The decor of the bar never really changed except for the flowers and a few furniture elements. For me, it is one of the chicest and comfortable bars in the center of Paris to chill in between meetings or for quiet moments—and I love the timeless and cozy historical decor of paintings by Lavaley under a blue cloudy painted sky. —Alexis Mabille

The Duchess of Sussex and husband Prince Harry arrived in Colombia Thursday for a four-day visit to the country, and Markle — who wore a sleek navy Veronica Beard set and a metallic Johanna Ortiz dress to kick off the trip — changed into her third look for a digital safety forum.

The Sussexes discussed online safety during a “Responsible Digital Future” event in Bogotá, with the duchess donning a brown silk Victoria Beckham shirt and a new pair of silky La Ligne pants ($295) in a similar earth tone.

Markle and Beckham are longtime friends; the duchess has worn a number of looks by the beloved Spice Girl in the past, and the Beckhams even attended the Sussexes’ royal wedding in 2018.

The royal previously sported the brown silk top for a “Time 100” special on ABC in 2020, and on Thursday, she left the top few buttons open to show off her gold Carter Juste Un Clou necklace ($16,200).

She kept the warm color palette going with a new pair of Aquazzura sandals ($795) and styled her hair in a curly ponytail.

As for Prince Harry, he also pulled out his third outfit of the day, wearing a dark suit and icy blue dress shirt for the event.

Earlier in the day, the Duchess of Sussex debuted a navy outfit by Veronica Beard, wearing the label’s halter-style vest ($598) and matching trousers ($448) to meet with Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez and her partner, Rafael Yerney Pinillo

The “Suits” alum then changed into a metallic jacquard dress ($2,150) by Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz to attend an event at the National Centre for the Arts alongside Prince Harry — who wore a summery beige suit — and Márquez.

Whether we’re embarrassed or proud, we all fear and we all love...something.

Who'd have thought, as they opened up their acceptance letter to UW-Stout, that within a year’s time they’d be crafting an outfit representing someone else’s love or fear? 

3D Design is a foundational art course that's offered every semester at Stout. Most students take it their first year. Some take it later—like Studio Art minor students, who can take it any time.

For the students who take the class in the spring…something will be waiting for them.

Fashion Without Fabric. A beast of a project that fills the classrooms and hallways of the Applied Arts Building for three weeks every spring. It’s not just a project. It’s a fashion runway show with judges, lights and awards.

Every year, the project adopts a theme. This past spring, it was Philias and Phobias .

Get ready to be spooked…or allured. Or both. 

Maybe these students knew how laborious this project would be, maybe not. Eventually, groups picked their words out of a paper bag. 

Fear of failure, love of heights. Love of plants, fear of light.

Eyes widening, they looked at their group mate(s) in order to decide: Do we keep it or exchange it?

If you visited any of the classes working on these outfits, you’d find groups with their focus faces on. Some groups bantered about silly things. Some had class-wide discussions about fish (which were quite serious). 

Chunks of foam, cardboard, spray paint, coffee filters, sheets of plastic, bike tires, plastic spoons and stilts are all on the table. 

You’d enjoy the sounds of the materials being worked with, cut, carved, glued, ruffled, smashed, crumpled…and sometimes bedazzled.

Just imagine. A college final where you're on stage in front of family, friends, and the Chancellor of UW-Stout. The lights are blinding and so hot, and you’re wearing everything besides the normal clothes you’d feel comfortable in. Talk about a nightmare!

But guess what? These students don’t quit. Their grit, creativity, energy and teamwork made up for any fear that bubbled up inside them. 

“The whole point of the class is to learn the materials,” said Izzy Quade. You tell ‘em, Izzy.

Shay Adesiji and Izzy were groupmates working with the word xerophobia . Take a swig of this: fear of dryness. 

Their group had more setbacks than two hands can count, but they laughed, shrugged and problem-solved their way through it. 

Being Wisconsin’s only Polytechnic University, there are a few unwritten principles we hold near and dear. 

One of them is that we don’t believe great things are born in a neat and tidy room. 

We have so many labs and studios… There are hundreds of spaces for our students to make a mess, all in the name of learning. 

Textbooks and laptops are necessary, but for many of our program’s core classes, the additional collaboration with people and materials will delightfully clutter our 180+ labs just the way we intend.

It’s 3:00 a.m. in Applied Arts.

It’s the night before the show, and Shay and Izzy’s sand pants are breaking into pieces that resemble Doritos. In that moment, we doubt they felt thankful for the opportunity to be working on this project. They were, however, beyond thankful when the other art students who were working on projects (for other classes, also at 3:00 a.m.) asked how they could help keep them from dissolving on stage. 

It's rare for people to pull back the curtain and see those special moments—the moments students remember forever.

Fashion Without Fabric glows like a neon sign in the memory of everyone who experienced it, good or bad. At UW-Stout, we do our best to make sure it’s not for nothing. 

Out of the mystical brown paper bag, partners Allie Seanor and Lucas Moreno-Martinez III drew luekophobia, the fear of white.

Inspired by Iris Van Herpen and the elements, they each designed an outfit to wear on the runway that gave the project an extraterrestrial touch. Both know how to put a sewing machine to good use, so they worked to create a final product that would eventually earn the “Artistry and Craft” honorable mention.

We’re not going to claim that this project builds strong foundations for good friendships, but it can. It has.

Allie and Lucas started off serious, not intending to become good pals.

Eventually, they started to warm up to each other, became friends and hung out together outside of working on their outfits. They never thought they could win, so they eased up. Little did they know…

Allie said she always looked forward to class to work with Lucas. 

Lucas shared that even though his and Allie’s outfits went right in the garbage after the show, their friendship remains intact. 

Maybe the real prize were the friends they made along the way…

The big reward is the ending. 

The end is the show, the performance, the big shebang. Fashion Without Fabric is a seriously fun event, full of energy and spectacular creativity. 

It's when everyone claps as you enter and exit the stage. 

The end is when the class concludes and the lessons continue in future classes, jobs, and life.

The end is where we look back and remember the good times, and the bad, and then we move forward. 

As you begin, dive in. Make a mess. Make a friend.

Make something you're proud of.
