Additionally, some writers are already claiming that online publications, such as The Revolutionist , which publishes AI-written content, are stealing their work .

Is Text Written by AI Plagiarized?

The biggest debate over AI-written content is whether it’s a form of plagiarism. Turnitin, an academic plagiarism and originality checker used by academics, has great insight into this issue. 

In an interview with Jasper AI, Turnitin CEO Chris Caren stated that students using AI to write assignments is similar to contract cheating, in which a student pays a writing mill to write an assignment. Caren says it’s academic misconduct, although some academics disagree on this issue. 

In terms of writers using AI to produce content, such as articles, blogs, or even entire books, the definitive answer is no, it’s not plagiarism. Carpenters use hammers to build furniture, but their maker’s mark doesn’t read “built by hammer.” The same rule applies for any person using AI to make their craft or life easier.

At the same time, writers who use AI to write entire pieces of content, with little to no modifications, must take responsibility for it once it’s published. Each AI software is trained in different sets of data and will provide varying information, even when given the same command. 

Overall, writers using AI to write content should utilize plagiarism checkers to see the originality score of their writing before publishing. They should also be fact checking, editing, proofreading, and adding their personal touch to the content to avoid any potential plagiarism accusations.

Contrary to popular belief, ChatGPT can do much more than just write an essay for you from scratch (which would be considered plagiarism). A more useful way to use the chatbot is to have it guide your writing process. 

Below, we show you how to use ChatGPT to do both the writing and assisting, as well as some other helpful writing tips. 

How ChatGPT can help you write an essay

If you are looking to use ChatGPT to support or replace your writing, here are five different techniques to explore. 

It is also worth noting before you get started that other AI chatbots can output the same results as ChatGPT or are even better, depending on your needs.

For example,  Copilot  has access to the internet, and as a result, it can source its answers from recent information and current events. Copilot also includes footnotes linking back to the original source for all of its responses, making the chatbot a more valuable tool if you're writing a paper on a more recent event, or if you want to verify your sources.

Regardless of which AI chatbot you pick, you can use the tips below to get the most out of your prompts and from AI assistance.

1. Use ChatGPT to generate essay ideas

Before you can even get started writing an essay, you need to flesh out the idea. When professors assign essays, they generally give students a prompt that gives them leeway for their own self-expression and analysis. 

As a result, students have the task of finding the angle to approach the essay on their own. If you have written an essay recently, you know that finding the angle is often the trickiest part -- and this is where ChatGPT can help.

All you need to do is input the assignment topic, include as much detail as you'd like -- such as what you're thinking about covering -- and let ChatGPT do the rest. For example, based on a paper prompt I had in college, I asked:

Can you help me come up with a topic idea for this assignment, "You will write a research paper or case study on a leadership topic of your choice." I would like it to include Blake and Mouton's Managerial Leadership Grid, and possibly a historical figure.

Within seconds, the chatbot produced a response that provided me with the title of the essay, options of historical figures I could focus my article on, and insight on what information I could include in my paper, with specific examples of a case study I could use. 

2. Use the chatbot to create an outline

Once you have a solid topic, it's time to start brainstorming what you actually want to include in the essay. To facilitate the writing process, I always create an outline, including all the different points I want to touch upon in my essay. However, the outline-writing process is usually tedious. 

With ChatGPT, all you have to do is ask it to write the outline for you.

Using the topic that ChatGPT helped me generate in step one, I asked the chatbot to write me an outline by saying: 

Can you create an outline for a paper, "Examining the Leadership Style of Winston Churchill through Blake and Mouton's Managerial Leadership Grid."

After a couple of seconds, the chatbot produced a holistic outline divided into seven different sections, with three different points under each section. 

This outline is thorough and can be condensed for a shorter essay or elaborated on for a longer paper. If you don't like something or want to tweak the outline further, you can do so either manually or with more instructions to ChatGPT. 

As mentioned before, since Copilot is connected to the internet, if you use Copilot to produce the outline, it will even include links and sources throughout, further expediting your essay-writing process. 

3. Use ChatGPT to find sources

Now that you know exactly what you want to write, it's time to find reputable sources to get your information. If you don't know where to start, you can just ask ChatGPT.

All you need to do is ask the AI to find sources for your essay topic. For example, I asked the following: 

Can you help me find sources for a paper, "Examining the Leadership Style of Winston Churchill through Blake and Mouton's Managerial Leadership Grid."

The chatbot output seven sources, with a bullet point for each that explained what the source was and why it could be useful.

The one caveat you will want to be aware of when using ChatGPT for sources is that it does not have access to information after 2021, so it will not be able to suggest the freshest sources. If you want up-to-date information, you can always use Copilot. 

Another perk of using Copilot is that it automatically links to sources in its answers. 

4. Use ChatGPT to write an essay

It is worth noting that if you take the text directly from the chatbot and submit it, your work could be considered a form of plagiarism since it is not your original work. As with any information taken from another source, text generated by an AI should be clearly identified and credited in your work.

In most educational institutions, the penalties for plagiarism are severe, ranging from a failing grade to expulsion from the school. A better use of ChatGPT's writing features would be to use it to create a sample essay to guide your writing. 

If you still want ChatGPT to create an essay from scratch, enter the topic and the desired length, and then watch what it generates. For example, I input the following text: 

Can you write a five-paragraph essay on the topic, "Examining the Leadership Style of Winston Churchill through Blake and Mouton's Managerial Leadership Grid."

Within seconds, the chatbot gave the exact output I required: a coherent, five-paragraph essay on the topic. You could then use that text to guide your own writing.

At this point, it's worth remembering how tools like ChatGPT work : they put words together in a form that they think is statistically valid, but they don't know if what they are saying is true or accurate. 

As a result, the output you receive might include invented facts, details, or other oddities. The output might be a useful starting point for your own work, but don't expect it to be entirely accurate, and always double-check the content. 

5. Use ChatGPT to co-edit your essay

Once you've written your own essay, you can use ChatGPT's advanced writing capabilities to edit the piece for you. 

You can simply tell the chatbot what you want it to edit. For example, I asked ChatGPT to edit our five-paragraph essay for structure and grammar, but other options could have included flow, tone, and more.

Once you ask the tool to edit your essay, it will prompt you to paste your text into the chatbot. ChatGPT will then output your essay with corrections made. This feature is particularly useful because ChatGPT edits your essay more thoroughly than a basic proofreading tool, as it goes beyond simply checking spelling. 

You can also co-edit with the chatbot, asking it to take a look at a specific paragraph or sentence, and asking it to rewrite or fix the text for clarity. Personally, I find this feature very helpful.

University students recruit AI to write essays for them. Now what?

Teachers need to work harder to get students to write and think for themselves.

Feature As word of students using AI to automatically complete essays continues to spread, some lecturers are beginning to rethink how they should teach their pupils to write.

Writing is a difficult task to do well. The best novelists and poets write furiously, dedicating their lives to mastering their craft. The creative process of stringing together words to communicate thoughts is often viewed as something complex, mysterious, and unmistakably human. No wonder people are fascinated by machines that can write too.

Unlike humans, language models don't procrastinate and create content instantly with a little guidance. All you need to do is type a short description, or prompt, instructing the model on what it needs to produce, and it'll generate a text output in seconds. So it should come as no surprise students are now beginning use these tools to complete school work.

Students are the perfect users: They need to write often, in large volumes, and are internet savvy. There are many AI-writing products to choose from that are easy to use and pretty cheap too. All of them lure new users with free trials, promising to make them better writers.

Monthly subscriptions for the most popular platform, Jasper, costs $40 per month to generate 35,000 words. Others, like Writesonic or Sudowrite, are cheaper at $10 per month for 30,000 words. Students who think they can use these products and get away with doing zero work, however, will probably be disappointed.

And then there's ChatGPT ...

Although AI can generate text with perfect spelling, great grammar and syntax, the content often isn't that good beyond a few paragraphs. The writing becomes less coherent over time with no logical train of thought to follow. Language models fail to get their facts right – meaning quotes, dates, and ideas are likely false. Students will have to inspect the writing closely and correct mistakes for their work to be convincing.

Prof: AI-assisted essays 'not good'

Scott Graham, associate professor at the Department of Rhetoric & Writing at the University of Texas at Austin, tasked his pupils with writing a 2,200-word essay about a campus-wide issue using AI. Students were free to lightly edit and format their work with the only rule being that most of the essay had to be automatically generated by software.

In an opinion article on Inside Higher Ed, Graham said the AI-assisted essays were "not good," noting that the best of the bunch would have earned a C or C-minus grade. To score higher, students would have had to rewrite more of the essay using their own words to improve it, or craft increasingly narrower and specific prompts to get back more useful content.

"You're not going to be able to push a button or submit a short prompt and generate a ready-to-go essay," he told The Register .

The limits of machine-written text forces humans to carefully read and edit copy. Some people may consider using these tools as cheating, but Graham believes they can help people get better at writing.

Don't waste all your effort on the first draft....

"I think if students can do well with AI writing, it's not actually all that different from them doing well with their own writing. The main skills I teach and assess mostly happen after the initial drafting," he said.

"I think that's where people become really talented writers; it's in the revision and the editing process. So I'm optimistic about [AI] because I think that it will provide a framework for us to be able to teach that revision and editing better.

"Some students have a lot of trouble sometimes generating that first draft. If all the effort goes into getting them to generate that first draft, and then they hit the deadline, that's what they will submit. They don't get a chance to revise, they don't get a chance to edit. If we can use those systems to speed write the first draft, it might really be helpful," he opined.

Whether students can use these tools to get away with doing less work will depend on the assignment. A biochemistry student claimed on Reddit they got an A when they used an AI model to write "five good and bad things about biotech" in an assignment, Vice reported .

AI is more likely to excel at producing simple, generic text across common templates or styles.

Listicles, informal blog posts, or news articles will be easier to imitate than niche academic papers or literary masterpieces. Teachers will need to be thoughtful about the essay questions they set and make sure students' knowledge are really being tested, if they don't want them to cut corners.

Ask a silly question, you'll get a silly answer

"I do think it's important for us to start thinking about the ways that [AI] is changing writing and how we respond to that in our assignments -- that includes some collaboration with AI," Annette Vee, associate professor of English and director of the Composition Program at the University of Pittsburgh, told us.

"The onus now is on writing teachers to figure out how to get to the same kinds of goals that we've always had about using writing to learn. That includes students engaging with ideas, teaching them how to formulate thoughts, how to communicate clearly or creatively. I think all of those things can be done with AI systems, but they'll be done differently."

The line between using AI as a collaborative tool or a way to cheat, however, is blurry. None of the academics teaching writing who spoke to The Register thought students should be banned from using AI software. "Writing is fundamentally shaped by technology," Vee said.

"Students use spell check and grammar check. If I got a paper where a student didn't use these, it stands out. But it used to be, 50 years ago, writing teachers would complain that students didn't know how to spell so they would teach spelling. Now they don't."

Most teachers, however, told us they would support regulating the use of AI-writing software in education. Anna Mills, who teaches students how to write at a community college in the Bay Area, is part of a small group of academics beginning to rally teachers and professional organizations like the Modern Language Association into thinking about introducing new academic rules.

Critical thinking skills

Mills said she could see why students might be tempted to use AI to write their essays, and simply asking teachers to come up with more compelling assessments is not a convincing solution.

"We need policies. These tools are already pretty good now, and they're only going to get better. We need clear guidance on what's acceptable use and what's not. Where is the line between using it to automatically generate email responses and something that violates academic integrity?" she asked The Register .

"Writing is just not outputs. Writing and revising is a process that develops our thinking. If you skip that, you're going to be skipping that practice which students need.

"It's too tempting to use it as a crutch, skip the thinking, and skip the frustrating moments of writing. Some of that is part of the process of going deeper and wrestling with ideas. There is a risk of learning loss if students become dependent and don't develop the writing skills they need."

Mills was particularly concerned about AI reducing the need for people to think for themselves, considering language models carry forward biases in their training data. "Companies have decided what to feed it and we don't know. Now, they are being used to generate all sorts of things from novels to academic papers, and they could influence our thoughts or even modify them. That is an immense power, and it's very dangerous."

Lauren Goodlad, professor of English and Comparative Literature at Rutgers University, agreed. If they parrot what AI comes up with, students may end up more likely to associate Muslims with terrorism or mention conspiracy theories, for example.

Computers are alredy interfering and changing the ways we write. Goodlad referred to one incident when Gmail suggested she change the word "importunate" to "impatient" in an email she wrote.

"It's hard to teach students how to use their own writing as a way to develop their critical thinking and as a way to express knowledge. They very badly need the practice of articulating their thoughts in writing and machines can rob them of this. If people really do end up using these things all the way through school, if that were to happen it could be a real loss not just for the writing quality but for the thinking quality of a whole generation," she said.

Rules and regulation

Academic policies tackling AI-assisted writing will be difficult to implement. Opinions are divided on whether sentences generated by machines count as plagiarism or not. There is also the problem of being able to detect writing produced by these tools accurately. Some teachers are alarmed at AI's growing technical capabilities, whilst others believe its overhyped. Some are embracing the technology more than others.

Marc Watkins, lecturer, and Stephen Monroe, chair and assistant professor of writing and rhetoric, are working on building an AI writing pilot programme with the University of Mississippi's Academic Innovations Group. "As teachers, we are experimenting, not panicking," Monroe told The Register .

"We want to empower our students as writers and thinkers. AI will play a role… This is a time of exciting and frenzied development, but educators move more slowly and deliberately… AI will be able to assist writers at every stage, but students and teachers will need tools that are thoughtfully calibrated."

Teachers are getting together and beginning to think about these tools, Watkins added. "Before we have any policy about the use of language models, we need to have sustained conversations with students, faculty, and administration about what this technology means for teaching and learning."

"But academia doesn't move at the pace of Big Tech. We're taking our time and slowly exploring. I don't think faculty need to be frightened. It's possible that these tools will have a positive impact on student learning and advancing equity, so let's approach AI assistants cautiously, but with an open mind."

Regardless of what policies universities may decide to implement in the future, AI presents academia with an opportunity to improve education now. Teachers will need to adapt to the technology if they want to remain relevant, and incentivise students to learn and think on their own with or without assistance from computers. ®

Writing centers on college campuses have been around for more than 100 years , and they’re both a resource for students doing assignments and a symbol of the importance in higher education of learning to express yourself in text.

But as generative AI tools like ChatGPT sweep into mainstream business tools, promising to draft properly-formatted text from simple prompts and the click of a button, new questions are rising about what role writing centers should play — or whether they will be needed in the future.

Many writing centers are already jumping in to experiment with new AI tools, making the case both for the continued importance of writing instruction and for their place on campus as a hub for teaching AI literacy.

“I see this as a real opportunity for writing centers to show leadership if they're given an opportunity,” says Sherry Wynn Perdue, president of the International Writing Centers Association. “It's an important moment, and our role as leaders is to help provide resources for our colleagues so that we can be leaders in the conversation about generative AI.”

Some writing instructors worry, though, that the new tools may tempt colleges to rely too heavily on the technology or even eliminate writing centers entirely. Writing centers are often run by non-tenured staff, which can make them especially vulnerable, says Genie N. Giaimo, director of Middlebury University's writing center and an assistant professor of writing and rhetoric there. And in the past, administrators at some colleges have replaced their services with all-encompassing tutoring centers or third party organizations, Wynn Perdue adds.

And even some professors with doctoral degrees in English are wondering whether colleges need to do as much these days to teach the skill of writing in light of new AI tools. “Why do we need a required writing course if AI can do everything outside stakeholders want such a course to teach?,” asked Melissa Nicolas, a professor of English at Washington State University, in an op-ed last year.

So where does AI leave the writing center?

Finding a Balance

Writing centers need to find a balance between introducing AI into the writing process and keeping the human support that every writer needs, argues Anna Mills, an English instructor at the College of Marin.

AI can serve as a supplement to a human tutor, Mills says. She encourages her students to use MyEssayFeedback, an AI tool that critiques the organization of an essay, the quality of evidence a student has included to support their thesis or the tone of the writing. Such tools can also evaluate research questions or review a student's writing based on the rubric for the assignment, she says.

By modeling these uses of AI, Mills says, writing centers can increase students’ understanding of the technology and ease their worries about using it inappropriately. Many students arrive at college concerned that they’ll be accused of cheating if they use AI for anything, she says. For instance, many have seen the video on TikTok of a student who says she was given an F on a paper for using a grammar checker that set off an AI detection system her professors used. Providing guidance can help students feel more comfortable with the technology, she says. And understanding that AI’s suggestions can be wrong also boosts student confidence in their own abilities.

“The student could say, once they get the feedback, ‘No, that's not really what I want to do. Could you help me think about how to expand this other part of it?’” Mills says. “That's something that I think we need to be cultivating — that kind of confidence and willingness to engage and push back — because that is how you get the most out of AI.”

Still, Mills requires her students to go to the writing center at least four times during the semester. Human interaction is essential to the writing process, she argues. Often the tutors energize students and show a genuine interest in what they are writing, something they can’t get from any chatbot, Mills says.

“Writing doesn’t have that much meaning without a human audience,” Mills says. “Meeting with someone as you are developing your ideas is often the place where you feel that there’s the most meaning in what you’re doing.”

Writing centers can play a pivotal role in retention for a college, says Giaimo. The resources can be especially important for students who historically haven’t gotten as much support from colleges, such as first-generation students and those from marginalized communities, she adds. And working with a tutor could be the first one-on-one teaching interaction a student has at college, which is vital, especially for students coming out of the pandemic.

Even as the use of AI tools grows in the business world, students still need to learn how to write and organize their ideas, Giaimo says. And without proper guidance, students can end up leaning too heavily on tools like ChatGPT without ever picking up the underlying skills to put their own thoughts down on paper.

“We forget that most people who are in these processes, at least in higher education, they're just kind of starting out or learning,” Giaimo says. “The process part is important, and actually maybe even more important than what the final end product looks like.”

Promoting AI Literacy

Writing center tutors play an essential role in helping students understand how to use AI appropriately, says Sarah Z. Johnson, director of Madison College’s writing center. Many writing centers these days train tutors in AI literacy, which the tutors can then pass down to the students they work with as the opportunity arises.

Johnson and her team train their tutors to teach students about how AI can be useful in the writing process. For instance, if a student is struggling to organize an essay, a tutor might ask the student to paste their draft into a chatbot and ask it to create an outline for them, Johnson says. The student can see where a paragraph or sentence may work better in the paper and save time during the tutoring session, she says.

This year, tutors will also learn a list of AI literacies, such as how large language models work, issues with generative AI, such as their cultural biases, or how to write prompts that can help organize information, Johnson says.

At Middlebury, tutors are also trained to navigate AI policies, which can differ among instructors, Giaimo says. Tutors also learn to speak with students who they find have used AI inappropriately — say, by having a chatbot do too much of an assignment without attribution — and guide them in a more productive direction.

In that way, Johnson says, tutors can help writers think through the “implications” of using AI, so they can make their own decisions about questions like “Does this final product represent me? Does it represent my voice? Does it represent what I want to say?”

The most important thing, says Johsnon, is “realizing that gen AI is a tool, but you have to know how to use it rather than it using you.”

Writing centers often have relationships with departments across campus, which makes them an excellent place to promote AI literacy, Johnson says. Students may be coming with an assignment from an engineering class or a social sciences class, she says, which means writing center staff can build connections with colleagues across the college.

To prevent colleges from replacing writing centers with AI, directors and staff need to be proactive and advocate for the role they play in promoting AI literacy, she says. Johnson and Wynn Perdue helped craft a list of AI literacies that will be released later this year by a joint task force between the Modern Language Association and the Conference on College Composition and Communication. The IWCA also has its own generative AI taskforce, which Johnson and Wynn Perdue both sit on, that plans to create additional resources to help writing centers adjust and train their staff.

“Gen AI is not something that we're scared of, but it is something that absolutely needs to have parameters,” Johnson says. “If we're not helping students figure out what those parameters are through tutors and things like that, I just don't know how it's going to happen.”

SEO (search engine optimization) is the process of thoughtfully finding the balance of writing for humans & search algorithms at the same time. It’s a far more in-depth process than we can cover here, but it essentially helps you tune up an article you’ve written—in a way that gives it the best possible shot at ranking high in Google search results .

  • Task : This one is straightforward. Tell the AI what you need. It could be writing an intro, drafting a blog post, or generating ideas.
  • Context : Give as much background and detail as possible at this stage. The more specific you are, the better. Let the AI know details that are important to the task (like what your take is on a subject you’re writing about).
  • Exemplar : Just a fancy way of saying “example.” Explain to ChatGPT exactly what kind of output you’re looking for. Including real examples will help it get closer to what you envision.
  • Persona : Who should the AI “be” while writing this content for you? Imagine that AI can wear different hats for different tasks. Explain who it is within your prompts, and it’ll have a much better understanding of how to go about creating your output.
  • Format : Share which format you want the final product to come in. What exactly should the AI output look like? Do you want a list, a paragraph, a blog post with multiple sections, maybe just some bullet points? Be specific here.
  • Voice : Always define the style and tone when you’re writing a ChatGPT prompt. Do you want your output to be casual, formal, playful, something much more nuanced? Let these tools know, so your writing outputs will match your vibe.

How to Tell If What You're Reading Was Written By AI

This post is part of Lifehacker’s “Exposing AI” series. We're exploring six different types of AI-generated media, and highlighting the common quirks, byproducts, and hallmarks that help you tell the difference between artificial and human-created content.

From the moment ChatGPT introduced the world to generative AI in late 2022 , it was apparent that, going forward, you can no longer trust that something you're reading was written by a human. You can ask an AI program like ChatGPT to write something—anything at all—and it will, in mere seconds. So how can you trust that what you're reading came from the mind of a person, and not the product of an algorithm?

If the ongoing deflation of the AI bubble has shown us anything, it's that most people kind of hate AI in general , which means they probably aren't keen on the idea that what they are reading was thoughtlessly spit out by a machine. Still, some have fully embraced AI's ability to generate realistic text, for better or, often, worse. Last year, CNET quietly began publishing AI content alongside human-written articles , only to face scorn and backlash from its own employees. Former Lifehacker parent company G/O Media also published AI content on its sites , albeit openly, and experienced the same blowback—both for implementing the tech with zero employee input, and because the content itself was just terrible .

But not all AI-generated text announces itself quite so plainly. When used correctly, AI programs can generate text that is convincing—even if you can still spot clues that reveal its inhuman source.

How AI writing works

Generative AI isn't some all-knowing digital consciousness that can answer your questions like a human would. It's not actually "intelligent" at all. Current AI tools are powered by large language models (LLMs), which are deep-learning algorithms trained on huge data sets—in this case, data sets of text. This training informs all of their responses to user queries. When you ask ChatGPT to write you something, the AI breaks down your question and identifies what it "thinks" are the most important elements in your query. It then "predicts" what the right sequence of words would be to answer your request, based on its understanding of the relationship between words.

More powerful models are able to both take in more information at once, as well as return longer, more natural results in kind. Plus, it's common for chatbots to be programmed with custom instructions that apply to all prompts, which, if used strategically, can potentially mask the usual signs of AI-generated text.

That said, no matter how you coax the AI into responding, it is beholden to its training, and there will likely be signs such a piece of text was generated by an LLM. Here are some things to look out for.

Watch for commonly used words and phrases

Because chatbots have been trained to look for the relationships between words, they tend to use certain words and phrases more often than a person would. There's no specific list of words and phrases that serve as red flags, but if you use a tool like ChatGPT enough, you may start to pick up on them.

For example, ChatGPT frequently uses the word "delve," especially during transitions in writing. (e.g. "Let's delve into its meaning.") The tool also loves to express how an idea "underscores" the overall argument (e.g. "This experience underscores the importance of perseverance..."), and how one thing is "a testament to" something else. (I generated three essays with ChatGPT for this section—two with GPT-4o and one with GPT-4o mini —and "testament" popped up in each one.)

Similarly, you may see repeated uses of words like "emerge," "relentless," "groundbreaking," among other notable regulars. In particular, when ChatGPT is describing a collection of something, it will often call it a "mosaic" or a "tapestry." (e.g. "Madrid’s cultural landscape is a vibrant mosaic .")

This Reddit thread from r/chatgpt highlights a bunch of these commonly generated—though it's worth noting that the post is 10 months old, and OpenAI frequently updates its models, so some of it may not be as relevant today. In my testing, I found some of the Reddit thread's most-cited words didn't appear in my test essays at all, while others certainly did, with frequency.

All these words are certainly perfectly fine to use when doing your own writing. If a student writes "delve into" in their essay, that isn't a smoking gun that proves they generated it with ChatGPT. If an employee writes that something is "a testament to" something else in a report, that doesn't mean they're outsourcing their work to AI. This is just one aspect of AI writing to note as you analyze text going forward.

Consider the style of the writing

It's impressive how quickly AI can generate a response to a query, especially when you're working with a particularly powerful LLM. And while some of that writing can appear very natural, if you're reading closely, you'll start to notice quirks that most human writers wouldn't use.

Whether you're using OpenAI's GPT model or Google's Gemini, AI has a bad habit of using flowery language in its generations, as if it was mostly trained on marketing copy. AI will often try to sell you hard on whatever it happens to be talking about: The city it's writing about is often "integral," "vibrant," and a "cornerstone" of the country it's in; the analogy it uses "beautifully" highlights the overall argument; a negative consequence is not just bad, but "devastating." None of these examples is damning in isolation, but if you read enough AI text, you'll start to feel like you've been talking to a thesaurus.

This becomes even more apparent when a chatbot is attempting to use a casual tone. If the bot is purporting to be a real person, for example, it often will present as bubbly and over-the-top, and far too enthusiastic to listen to anything you have to say. To be fair, in my testing for this article, ChatGPT's GPT-4o model didn't appear to do this as much as it used to, preferring more succinct responses to personal queries—but Meta AI's chatbot absolutely still does it, stepping into the roles of both best friend and therapist whenever I shared a fake problem I was having.

If you're reading an essay or article that expresses an argument, take note of how the "writer" structures their points. Someone who asks an AI tool to write an essay on a subject without giving it too much coaching will often receive an essay that doesn't actually delve into the arguments all that much. The AI will likely generate short paragraphs offering surface-level points that don't add much to deepen the argument or contribute to the narrative, masking these limitations with the aforementioned $10 words and flowery language. Each paragraph might come across more of a summary of the argument, rather than an attempt to contribute to the argument itself. Remember, an LLM doesn't even know what it's arguing; it just strings together words it believes belong together.

If you feel you've walked away from the piece having learned nothing at all, that might be AI's doing.

Fact check and proofread

LLMs are black boxes. Their training is so intricate, we can't peer inside to see exactly how they established their understanding of the relationships between words. What we do know is, all AI has the capability (and the tendency) to hallucinate . In other words, sometimes it an AI will just make things up. Again, LLMs don't actually know anything: They just predict patterns of words based on their training. So while a lot of what they spit out will likely be rooted in the truth, sometimes it predicts incorrectly, and you might get some bizarre results on the other end. If you're reading a piece of text, and you see a claim you know isn't true stated as fact, especially without a source, be skeptical.

On the flip side, consider how much proofreading the piece required. If there were zero typos and no grammatical mistakes, that's also an AI tell: These models might make things up, but they don't output mistakes like misspellings. Sure, maybe the author made sure to dot every "i" and cross every "t," but if you're already concerned the text was generated with AI, stilted perfectionism can be a giveaway.

Try an AI text detector (but you can't trust those either)

AI detectors, like LLMs, are based on AI models. However, instead of being trained on large volumes of general text, these detectors are trained specifically on AI text. In theory, this means they should be able to spot AI text when presented with a sample. That's not always the case.

When I wrote about AI detectors last year , I warned not to use them, because they were not as reliable as they claimed to be. It's tough to say how much they have improved in the time since: When I feed one of my stories through a tool like ZeroGPT , it says my piece was 100% human-written. (Damn right.) If I submit an essay generated by Gemini about the significance of Harry losing his parents in the Harry Potter series, the tool identifies 94.95% of the piece as AI-generated. (The only sentence it thinks was written by a human was: "This personal stake in the conflict distinguishes Harry from other characters, granting him an unwavering purpose." Sure.)

And yet the detector still fails the same test I gave it in 2023: It believes 100% of Article 1., Section 2. of the United States Constitution is AI-generated. Someone tell Congress! I also set it to analyzing this short article from The New York Times , published July 16, 2015, long before the advent of modern LLMs. Again, I was assured the piece was 100% AI.

There are a lot of AI detectors on the market, and maybe some are better than others. If you find one that tends to reliably identify text you know to be human-generated as such, and likewise for text you know is AI, go ahead and test writing you aren't sure about. But I still think the superior method is analyzing it yourself. AI text is getting more realistic, but it still comes with plenty of tells that give itself away—and often, you'll know it when you see it.

OpenAI says it’s taking a ‘deliberate approach’ to releasing tools that can detect writing from ChatGPT

OpenAI has built a tool that could potentially catch students who cheat by asking ChatGPT to write their assignments — but according to The Wall Street Journal , the company is debating whether to actually release it.

In a statement provided to TechCrunch, an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that the company is researching the text watermarking method described in the Journal’s story, but said it’s taking a “deliberate approach” due to “the complexities involved and its likely impact on the broader ecosystem beyond OpenAI.”

“The text watermarking method we’re developing is technically promising, but has important risks we’re weighing while we research alternatives, including susceptibility to circumvention by bad actors and the potential to disproportionately impact groups like non-English speakers,” the spokesperson said.

This would be a different approach from most previous efforts to detect AI-generated text, which have been largely ineffective . Even OpenAI itself shut down its previous AI text detector last year due to its “low rate of accuracy.”

With text watermarking, OpenAI would focus solely on detecting writing from ChatGPT, not from other companies’ models. It would do so by making small changes to how ChatGPT selects words, essentially creating an invisible watermark in the writing that could later be detected by a separate tool.

Following the publication of the Journal’s story, OpenAI also updated a May blog post about its research around detecting AI-generated content. The update says text watermarking has proven “highly accurate and even effective against localized tampering, such as paraphrasing,” but has proven “less robust against globalized tampering; like using translation systems, rewording with another generative model, or asking the model to insert a special character in between every word and then deleting that character.”

As a result, OpenAI writes that this method is “trivial to circumvention by bad actors.” OpenAI’s update also echoes the spokesperson’s point about non-English speakers, writing that text watermarking could “stigmatize use of AI as a useful writing tool for non-native English speakers.”

The marketing world is buzzing about artificial intelligence (AI) — namely, ChatGPT. Not only is it the biggest of the AI bunch, but it’s also (so far) the most impactful. 

Yes, it can generate content. But the real value? Search engine optimization (SEO). With an arsenal of well-crafted prompts and a healthy dose of human creativity, ChatGPT can make your brand more visible than ever before. 

What Makes an Effective Prompt?

ChatGPT is a wonderful companion for countless SEO tasks . However, without an effective prompt, it can generate invalid, inaccurate or irrelevant content. 

Think of a ChatGPT prompt like you would a homework assignment. Just like in school, broad instructions invite a wide range of answers — many off-base or straight-up wrong. 

Here are some tips to make your SEO prompts deliver Grade A results:

  • Offer context: ChatGPT generates content based on the data it’s trained on and any information it can process. So, the more context you provide, the better the output. Include relevant details to help it understand what you need — background info, facts, target audiences, etc. This will ultimately make AI-generated content more accurate and useful.
  • Use reference material: Looking for a certain tone? Give it an example. As of GPT-4, you can upload documents, like brand guidelines or blogs, to demonstrate what you want. GPT-4o can also browse the internet, so paste links to anything you’d like it to reference. (Note: These features are limited without a ChatGPT Plus subscription.)
  • Provide guardrails: Search engines have preferences for character limits and word counts, which sway SEO performance. The best prompt will account for these variables. For example, if you’re writing a meta description, tell ChatGPT to act as an SEO expert and keep it within 155 characters. Likewise, if certain topics are off-limits to your brand, ask it to avoid them.
  • Specify format: The newest GPTs can deliver outputs in different styles, like a list, table or snippet of code. Be direct about what format you want. For content writing, you might need concise, detailed paragraphs.
  • Iterate and refine: If the results aren’t quite on the mark, adjust your ChatGPT prompt and try again. You can directly tell the model what you didn’t like about the response, which can help it generate a better outcome. Also, keep the same chat thread going for future uses. The model maintains a “memory” of the past instructions, allowing it to retain context and improve responses. 

ChatGPT Prompts for Keyword Research

Keyword research is the rudder that steers your entire SEO strategy. Skip this step and you’re more than likely headed in the wrong direction. 

The good news? ChatGPT can help. Here are two ways it doubles as an SEO tool for smooth-sailing keyword research:

1. Seed SEO Keywords

A seed keyword is a short, generic term highly relevant to your niche or target audience — a broad category they’re probably searching for. It’s typically only 1-3 words long.

Here’s a ChatGPT prompt you can use to identify seed keywords.

Prompt: I need help conducting seed keyword research. Suggest 15 unique SEO keywords topically relevant to the main category: “content marketing.”

Want to narrow your choices? Ask ChatGPT to identify the most important keywords based on relevance to your target audience. Have it include explanations to understand why those terms are especially significant.

2. Long-Tail SEO Keywords

Whereas seed keywords are shorter and highly competitive, long-tail keywords are usually the opposite. They may have a lower search volume, but fewer domains target them. In other words, you have a stronger chance of landing on Page 1 of the search engine results page (SERP).

As you can see, they’re longer and more specific than “content marketing analytics.” 

Here’s a tip: Use another SEO tool, like Semrush, to confirm search intent and monthly volume. These are critical factors to consider when choosing a target keyword. Once you have this information, return to ChatGPT and use it to simplify data analysis . 

ChatGPT Prompts for SEO Content Writing

When we asked our audience how they use ChatGPT for search engine optimization , 58% of respondents said content creation — which isn’t surprising. 

Why? Because content writing takes time. The average blog post takes nearly four hours to write, or about 60% longer than a decade ago. That’s not factoring in keyword research, content ideation or outlining. 

Luckily, AI can streamline the effort. Here are a few of the best ChatGPT prompts for to augment your SEO content creation process:

Being a content creator is hard when you’re short on content ideas. Sometimes, we need a push in the right direction — or any direction — to generate momentum. 

Think of this next prompt as the jumper cable that starts your creative engine. 

Prompt: Suggest five content ideas for SEO-optimized blog posts targeting the keyword “benefits of AI in healthcare.”

Pick an idea, combine it with another or don’t use any — the choice is yours. At the very least, this exercise gets your wheels turning; at most, you’re off to the races with a great SEO topic. 

4. Outline Creation

Once you’ve brainstormed ideas, ChatGPT can help you visualize the content in more detail with a fairly robust outline, complete with subtopics, messaging points and more. For example, here’s how I used it to outline the content ideas from the previous exercise…

5. Intros and Conclusions

I’ll admit it: Writing introductions and conclusions isn’t always easy. Even with a solid outline, piecing together an engaging intro takes time. This next ChatGPT prompt can help ease the process with a helpful example — or, with the right instructions, a ready-to-go paragraph. 

Prompt: I’m writing a blog post titled “The Future of Healthcare: Potential Benefits of AI Innovations.” Write an engaging and SEO-friendly introduction that includes the keyword “benefits of AI innovations.” Keep the intro short (less than 150 words) and avoid cliches or repetition.

Not too bad! It needs a little work, but we’re on our way to a full-fledged blog.

6. Content Writing

Perhaps the greatest advantage of content marketing with ChatGPT is its ability to streamline the content writing process. In a matter of seconds, you can generate an entire blog post or landing page to aid your SEO strategy. 

But be warned: Inputs always dictate the outputs. The better your instructions are, the better your copy. See how I gave ChatGPT all the necessary information to write an SEO-optimized blog:

Prompt: You’re an expert in AI technology and its healthcare applications. Based on this outline, write a 1,500-word blog post on “The Future of Healthcare: Potential Benefits of AI Innovations.” Incorporate the following keywords throughout to boost search engine optimization.

And with that, our work is done, right? Wrong.

It’s never OK to publish AI-generated content without human oversight. ChatGPT isn’t always right and has no moral code, so you must always check its output for bias, quality and factual accuracy. 

7. Google Ads

Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising and search engine optimization are often considered opposites. But in reality, PPC boosts SEO performance. How? Driving targeted traffic to a website can lead to higher engagement and improved organic rankings as search engines recognize the site’s relevance and popularity.

Aside from the content itself, other elements impact SEO performance. Here are some of the best prompts for optimizing these components:

8. Title Tag

A title tag is an HTML element that specifies the title of a web page, displayed on SERPs as the clickable headline. It significantly influences both user click-through rates and search engine rankings by providing a concise summary of the page’s content.

Prompt: Write an SEO-friendly title tag for the blog post. Stay within character limits and incorporate the keyword “digital marketing strategies.”

Technical SEO refers to your website’s backend architecture. Every site has different technical components that make it easier for search engines to crawl and index them. Let’s look at two SEO prompts that can simplify this process:

11. Robots.txt Files

A robots.txt file tells search engine crawlers which URLs they can access on your site. For instance, you might not want Google indexing a staging environment because it’s used for testing and development purposes. It could contain incomplete or unpolished content that isn’t ready for public viewing. If indexed, this could also dilute your SEO performance. 

ChatGPT can help generate a file that mitigates this risk:

Prompt: Create a robots.txt file that prevents indexing development or staging environments.
