This program began in the 1940s and has been accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1948. As such, the education you get at BU aligns with current standards of psychological practice.

This five-year clinical program includes traditional coursework and seminars, as well as opportunities to conduct research and get clinical experience. In fact, you will begin psychological research in your first year in the program, and internship experiences follow in the second year. These opportunities extend throughout the program until year five, which includes two semesters of internship placements.

Initially, your formal clinical training is on campus at BU’s Psychological Services Center. Your training includes 10 hours of work per week for a period of 11 months. During the third year of the program, your clinical experiences move to locations off campus and require you to work two full days each week for 11 months. The final internship during the fifth year of the program is a full-time placement.

Additional graduation requirements include dissertation research and defense, compiling a portfolio of competencies, and passing a qualifying exam.

To apply to BU’s Ph.D. program in clinical psychology, you must submit the following:

• An application by December 31 for the following academic year
• A personal statement explaining why you are a good fit for this program

The general psychology Ph.D. program at Northcentral University is another excellent example of a Ph.D. program that doesn’t require the GRE, provided your college GPA is at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

This is a non-licensure program, so completing this degree won’t qualify you as a licensed clinical psychologist. However, the program’s emphasis on biological and social bases of behavior, and the robust research requirements, prepare you for many different jobs in psychology research.

You will need about four years to complete the 60 credits for graduation. Northcentral offers flexible courses to assist you in completing your degree with minimal disruptions to your life and work. For example, there are no weekly assignments, no lecture hours, and courses start every week.

Brown eliminates gre test requirement for 24 doctoral programs.

In enabling Ph.D. program leaders to drop the requirement to submit test scores, the Graduate School looks to attract talented, high-achieving students from an increasingly diverse pool of candidates.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — For prospective graduate students applying to enroll in the 2020-21 academic year and beyond, Brown University will no longer require Graduate Records Examination (GRE) test scores for admission to 24 of its Ph.D. programs.

Eliminating the requirement will enable the programs to attract a wider pool of applicants, Graduate School leaders said. The move adds to a growing array of initiatives at Brown to reduce barriers that discourage some students from groups historically underrepresented in higher education and from low-income backgrounds from applying for admission.

“The future success of graduate education at Brown depends on the diverse, innovative and intellectually independent candidates we admit and the varied skill sets they bring to their disciplines,” said Dean of the Graduate School Andrew G. Campbell. “By removing the Graduate School’s GRE requirement and allowing programs to decide whether to require the exam, we will broaden the talent pool of students who apply to and have access to graduate education at Brown.”

A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that the GRE is not always an accurate predictor of success in graduate school, Campbell said. In considering prospective doctoral students, Brown evaluates a wide range of factors, from academic strength and intellectual curiosity to research experiences, through application components including transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal statements and in-person interviews.

“Twenty-four of our doctoral programs have decided that the GRE is not required for a holistic review of potential applicants to their disciplines,” Campbell added. “This, in conjunction with a new transitional stipend for newly matriculating doctoral students and our fully-funded Ph.D. and MFA programs, continues our work to ensure that a Brown education is accessible to students from all income groups and that all graduate students can thrive on campus.”

Brown faculty who direct individual Ph.D. programs evaluate applications from prospective students in consultation with leaders from the Graduate School. Already, GRE scores were considered as one among a wide variety of factors weighed as each applicant’s credentials are considered individually.

“We’re not just looking at scores — we’re looking at students,” said Marlina Duncan, associate dean of diversity initiatives at the Graduate School.

Financial considerations such as exam fees, GRE prep-course tuition or tutoring expenses — and logistical challenges such as finding transportation and taking time away from school or work to take the test — can discourage some prospective students, particularly from historically underrepresented groups or first-generation or low-income backgrounds, from applying.

Moreover, many academic leaders said the GRE does not capture a candidate’s predilection toward critical thinking, innovation and collaboration — three areas that are crucial to success in the Graduate School at Brown.

“We’re looking for the fire — we’re looking for the drive,” said Anita Zimmerman, graduate program director for Brown’s molecular pharmacology and physiology program. “We’re looking for the motivation from someone who isn’t daunted by obstacles and is willing to dive into research with creativity and an ability to solve difficult problems. Those kinds of indicators are not easy to put into numbers, but they’re much more useful and telling than a score on an exam that repeatedly has been shown to be a very poor predictor of student success.”

Zimmerman noted that in recent years, the program had already begun to decrease emphasis on GRE scores in lieu of recommendation letters, personal statements and interviews.

Ravit Reichman, director of graduate studies for the English program, agreed that test scores have been but one factor in the department’s evaluation of prospective students.

“Not once in my time at Brown have we had a substantive conversation about a candidate’s GRE scores,” Reichman said. “We’ve always focused more on a person’s curiosity and intellectual itinerary — that is, how they got to thinking about the ideas they think about, and how they express that on the page.”

The Graduate School’s decision to eliminate the overarching GRE requirement enables program leaders across Brown’s 51 doctoral programs to make individual choices about whether to continue to require scores. The 2020-21 application for admission is open now on the school’s website. The following academic programs will no longer require GRE scores:

When applying to graduate schools in the United States, students who wish to enroll in their Ph.D. programs may need to take the GRE general test as an admission requirement in their program.

Fortunately, while most universities in the USA require the GRE test, some of them don’t need to submit this upon admission to their Ph.D. programs at several institutions. In the sections below, we will look at 10 US graduate schools that don’t require a GRE.

Top Universities That Do Not Require GRE (Ph.D. Level)

10. National University

We end our list of universities with no GRE requirements for their Ph.D. programs with National University . It is an online university headquartered in San Diego, California.

This institution’s academic work is organized in five different schools, the most popular of which are the School of Business, the School of Health Sciences, and the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The most popular doctoral programs that the online university offers are Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice , Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership , and Doctor of Health Administration .

To enter either of the National University’s numerous doctoral programs, the applicant should have a master’s degree in the selected field of study. No GRE score is required for admission.

Universities usually require GRE test scores to assess students’ preparation for graduate-level education and gauge their academic potential for advanced studies. However, other requirements can prove your readiness for Ph.D. programs, such as a transcript of records or a résumé to see proof of coursework eligibility. Can You Get Into Graduate School Without GRE Scores?

The short answer: yes, you can! There are many programs that don’t require the GRE in a range of disciplines, including Master’s, PhD, and MPH programs . There are also programs that allow you to waive the GRE requirement under certain circumstances. Still others only require the GRE if you are applying for funding or fellowships. Furthermore, there are even programs that, while they may require the GRE, strongly de-emphasize it in the admissions process. In this case your score really doesn’t matter very much.

Graduate Program Types Without GRE Scores Required

There are a few specific graduate school program areas and types that frequently have a “No GRE Required” policy. We’ll describe those here:

MFA Programs

Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs are advanced degrees for those involved in the creative pursuits—music, film, theater, creative writing, painting, and so on. MFA programs frequently either waive the GRE score requirement or strongly de-emphasize it in admissions. Instead, what typically  matters most in MFA admissions is a portfolio of your creative work. You will be evaluated and offered admission primarily based on the strength of that work; GRE scores just aren’t that important. You are better off putting your hours into your portfolio or audition rather than into GRE prep.

Executive Programs

Programs designed for working professionals frequently do not require the GRE. This is because these programs are designed to expand specific professional skills, making   work experience more salient than test scores. Additionally, those with established careers may have less patience and time to prepare for a standardized test. Not requiring the GRE can make these programs much more attractive to professional applicants.

The catch is that you frequently have to have a certain amount of work experience (often 5+ years) to apply. But if you do have robust work experience and you don’t want to take the GRE, look for an executive program. These can also be called professional programs. They are often offered through a university’s school of continuing or professional studies.

Online Master’s Programs

Another area where you may find many master’s programs without GRE score requirements is online. Students getting their master’s degrees online don’t have to be fed, housed, placed in classrooms, and so on. Thus, it doesn’t take as many resources to accommodate them. This means online programs can afford to take more students and don’t necessarily need to be as rigorously selective in admissions as in-person programs.

The flip side is that some consider  online master’s programs less legitimate than in-person programs. In the early days of online education, bogus schools and programs proliferated rapidly, offering low-quality instruction with little value in the real world. However, many well-established schools and universities now offer legitimate, high-quality online programs in addition to their on-campus ones.

Some employers also value online programs less because student-student and student-faculty interaction create a big part of the value of any degree, and it’s harder to facilitate that in an online program. In-person programs also have the benefit of making it much easier to do research or projects with professors, which is another thing that adds a lot of value to a degree.

Additionally, many online programs are for-profit. Degrees from for-profit institutions are typically not well-respected because these institutions aren’t really learning-driven so much as profit-driven. This is something to be aware of when considering a pricey investment like graduate school. And no matter what institution of higher learning you choose, make sure that a legitimate accrediting body has accredited it.

Of course, there also are some online programs that do require the GRE. So make sure to double-check before you assume!

Common GRE-Score Waiving Policies

There are a few other common policies you may find that allow you to waive the GRE at a variety of programs.

Undergraduate GPA Cutoff

Schools frequently offer waivers to applicants who meet certain undergraduate GPA requirements.  For example, at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the GRE is waived for all master’s degree applicants (except in Architecture) with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0/4.0.

A requirement of 3.0 on a 4-point scale to waive the GRE is common for these types of policies. However, don’t assume you won’t qualify for a GPA-related waiver anywhere just because your undergraduate GPA isn’t that high. For example, Indiana University’s Master in Public Health program waives the GRE for applicants with a GPA of 2.8+ .

Other Graduate Degree

You may also find programs that are willing to waive GRE requirements if you hold another graduate degree. For example, the University of Illinois’ Library and Information master’s degree program waives the GRE for applicants holding a JD or PhD (they have an undergrad GPA waiver, too)! University of New Hampshire waives the GRE for MPH applicants with a previous master’s degree or five years of relevant professional experience.

Professional Experience

Many schools will also waive the GRE requirement for applicants with professional work experience, especially relevant experience. At American University’s Master of Public Affairs program, the GRE can be waived for students with five years of relevant experience . Five years seems like the standard amount of expected experience for waiving the GRE. But definitely look around if you have at least several years of experience!

Applying to Graduate School Without GRE Scores: What You Need to Know

If you’re hoping to apply to graduate schools without GRE scores—either because you don’t want to take the test or your scores were lower than expected— here are the questions to consider.

Should I Apply to Programs With No GRE Required?

So you know that there are programs that don’t require you to send in GRE scores with your application. But is it worth it to apply to them? And should you avoid the GRE altogether just because you can?

There are instances where the no-GRE options are considerably less prestigious than GRE-required programs. They may be less selective or not as highly ranked as their GRE-requiring counterparts. You can assess how important the level of prestige is to you and how much that affects your willingness to invest in graduate school.

That said, if you scan the list below, you will see that there are some very well-reputed institutions and programs with no-GRE required graduate programs. Some examples include Johns Hopkins, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois, UC-Berkeley, Georgetown, NYU, Northwestern, and MIT. So whether or not no GRE necessarily means less highly-ranked schools is going to depend a lot on what you want to study.

It’s also worth considering why you’re trying to apply to programs with no GRE required. If you just think the GRE is a hassle that you want to avoid, that’s not necessarily a great reason to only apply to no-GRE programs. Of course, if you already have a pretty good idea of exactly what you want in a program and your dream program just happens to not require the GRE, that’s great! Then you may really not need to take the test.

You may also be looking for no-GRE programs because you already took the test and didn’t do as well as you expected or hoped. First, remember this: GRE scores are typically not the most important part of your graduate school application. Thus, a lower score than you hoped is not necessarily the death knell at schools that require the GRE. Second, it absolutely is possible to improve your GRE score through preparation . So I would advise you to get back on that horse and take the test again in a few months. And if your scores are still a little low or you don’t have time to take the test again, consider applying to a mix of no-GRE and GRE-required schools. You won’t know if those scores will keep you from getting admitted if you don’t apply.

Will Not Sending Optional GRE Scores Hurt My Chances?

The online Ed.D. uses a combination of synchronous and asynchronous courses and utilizes a cohort system. Learners complete 17 courses with 64 credits, with courses delivered in an accelerated, seven-week format.

Online learners must commute to the St. Paul campus for doctoral residencies on two occasions. CSP also assigns students a leadership coach to mentor learners throughout the program. 6. Creighton University

Georgia College applicants looking for Ph.D. programs with no GRE requirement can enroll in the nursing DNP . This online post-master’s program that takes just five semesters to complete. The program requires 37 credits, and aside from a one-week immersion experience, is delivered entirely online. Learners enter the online DNP once per year in the fall and enjoy a cohort system. As a post-master’s program, the DNP requires applicants first earn an MSN in nursing and hold an active RN license. Applicants also submit a resume, letters of recommendation, and previous transcripts.

11. Lewis University

Lewis University, a private, Catholic school based just southwest of Chicago, ranks among the best-valued private schools in the region. The midsized school teaches over 6,400 students.

The university offers 17 different programs entirely online , though only one option leads to a doctoral degree: the nursing DNP. This 30-credit program comes entirely online. Students must, however, complete at least 1000 residency hours and two one-day immersions onsite in Romeoville, Illinois. Most learners complete the program in two years, and Lewis arranges various forms of tuition assistance, including assistantships, employer discounts, and Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders discounts.

While Lewis sets no GRE requirements for the program, applicants must first complete their MSN at an accredited school and hold a current RN license. Applicants also submit official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a 500-word personal essay.

12. Maryville University of Saint Louis

While based in Saint Louis, Maryville University is a prominent online school, with over half of its 10,200 students learning online. The university offers most of its programs entirely online, including several no GRE doctoral programs.

The program utilizes a cohort system, keeping students on track while connecting them with fellow learners. 13. Mount Carmel College of Nursing

22. University of Southern California

Department of Geography

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. is a different kind of degree from the master’s degree. A doctoral candidate in geography must be capable of making original contributions to knowledge and scholarship. For the students to make such contributions, they must concentrate on a narrow and clearly defined field of study. We require, however, that doctoral candidates know more of geography than their particular specialties; thus, any aspirant for a doctorate must obtain master’s training or its equivalent before being admitted to doctoral candidacy. In short, admission to doctoral candidacy is official recognition that a student’s general foundation in the breadth of geography is satisfactory. Students then devote their attention to developing depth in chosen specialties.

The general requirements for a doctoral degree in geography are more rigorous than those for a master’s degree. At the same time, the greater flexibility of the doctoral program allows advanced students to pursue programs of study tailored to their special interests and needs.

Progress through the degree is marked by: 

• Successful performance in a verbal qualifying exam; 
• Four-day written comprehensive exam, with a verbal portion after the written answers have been assessed by the committee;  
• Formal dissertation proposal; and 
• Verbal defense of a completed dissertation.

The four-year Ph.D. program is reserved for students who have a master’s degree from another graduate program. That can be another geography program at another university, a non-geography program at another university, or a non-geography program at Penn State.

Students entering the four-year Ph.D. program must take the doctoral qualifying exam in their first year. A committee from three of the four fields of geography and formally appointed by the Graduate Program Officer will administer the qualifying exam. The qualifying exam can take place any time during the year, but students in the four-year Ph.D. program typically take it during spring semester.

Students in the four-year Ph.D. program complete a comprehensive exam and defend their dissertation proposal in the second year. Depending on the needs of their research, and in agreement with their doctoral committee, students can fulfill these two requirements in either order. Once students have successfully passed their comprehensive exam and defended their proposal, they typically take two years to research, write, and defend their dissertations.
