By far the most important thing to consider when researching doctoral programs is — how will your degree be perceived and valued by the people you want to work with.

If you want to become a college professor, you’re not going to be hired with a quickie doctorate. What they look for is how well you’ve become integrated into the academic world by becoming an expert: working on significant projects, publishing peer-reviewed papers, speaking at professional meetings, etc. And for sure they will discard your application once they see your degree is from one of the schools in this article.

The ONLY time I would recommend one of these degrees is if you ALREADY have a job you like, and by completing a doctorate, you can be placed higher on the salary scale. Or, if you’re a practicing RN or other medical professional. Or, you just want to impress your friends. But one of these won’t help you enter a new profession. Ask to speak to graduates and see if they’re now working in a new profession because of completing a doctorate.

Launched in 2008, the Queen's Nursing doctoral degree has an online and in-person blended delivery model. Our experienced faculty use both synchronous and asynchronous teaching modalities to lead small graduate seminars, engaging you in a lively, critical examination of philosophy, policy and theory while you delve into your own areas of research interests.

This innovative research program will not only give you the tools you need to become an expert in clinical, theoretical, and health system issues, but it will also prepare you for a career as a leader in health research, nursing education, clinical practice, and health care administration.

Program overview, general information.

Our PhD program consists of six courses, five in the first year and one in the second year. There are three mandatory on-site intensive weeks ranging from 5-10 days in length, normally held in early September, mid-January, and early May of the first year of the program. After the intensive weeks, the courses continue with weekly online seminars.

Following the completion of the first-year courses, students will write the comprehensive exam and then take the sixth and final course which is designed to support students in developing a thesis proposal. After a successful oral examination of the thesis proposal, students submit their project for ethics review and then proceed to data collection, analysis, and writing. The thesis requires independent, original research and makes up at least two-thirds of the time normally required for the program.

Upper year students are expected to visit campus at least once per year, normally coinciding with the annual student research conference in spring (usually May); students are required to attend the final thesis examination in person. Nurtured by close mentoring relationships with faculty supervisors, the Queen’s model is to ensure graduate students present and publish their research, and normally complete their program in 4 years.

• Describe how you have advocated for health equity, diversity, inclusion, indigeneity, and/or accessibility (EDIIA) within the healthcare system. How has your experience influenced your career path and other pursuits to this point? Max. 300 words.
• What will be your strategy in your personal and professional life to manage the time commitment this program requires? This can include any academic accommodations that you plan to request. Max. 250 words.
• Proof of registration as a nurse in local province or own country; and
• Curriculum Vitae .

International Applicants

The required  b accalaureate degree in nursing must be equivalent to a 4-year Canadian program.

In addition to the academic requirements, applicants must provide:

Proof of registration as a registered nurse in own country (will not be required to register with College of Nurses of Ontario). International students who are not registered in Ontario will be unable to conduct thesis research that requires registration;

Proficiency in English . Applicants whose first language is not English or who have not recently studied for at least one complete year at a post-secondary institution where English is the official language of instruction, will be required to obtain satisfactory results in an English language proficiency test, as part of the application process, and before their application will be considered complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am an international student who is not registered with the college of nurses of ontario, can i still apply.

As an international applicant you are not required to be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario, but must be registered as a nurse in your own country.  If you are not registered as a nurse in Ontario during the program you will be unable to conduct thesis research that requires registration.  This limitation on thesis research topics should be considered and discussed with a potential thesis supervisor prior to submitting your application.

Can I take the program part-time?

No, this is a full-time program only. Most of the course work involved in the program occurs in the first year and most classes are organized for Mondays and Tuesdays.

How do I decide on a thesis supervisor?

The decision on a supervisor is made by the Graduate Program Committee, following discussions between you and a potential faculty supervisor. A faculty member must be able to supervise thesis research in your area of interest and be willing to do so, given their current work commitments. It is recommended that you review profiles of faculty members on the  School of Nursing website  to determine if there is someone who conducts research in your area.

Do I have to have a thesis topic before I come?

Normally, you should have a general area of research interest before you begin the program, but a specific thesis topic is developed as you engage in course work and discussions with your thesis supervisor. We encourage applicants to reach out to a potential supervisor(s) at the time of your application. This will allow for a smoother facilitation of matching applicants with supervisors. 

Are there scholarships available?

The Graduate Program Committee nominates individual applicants and students for internal scholarships and awards for which they are eligible. In order to be considered for awards in the first year, your application should be completed by February 1st. You are also encouraged to apply for external scholarships and fellowships as early as possible, as some of these may then be available to you during your first year of study. These are often offered by professional organizations or associations in nursing. The MPLAN offers professionals with experience in planning the opportunity to expand their knowledge of planning, keep up-to-date with recent developments, and to obtain a graduate degree for career advancement. The emphasis is on upgrading planning knowledge and skills in new areas and refreshing core concepts. This program is a part-time, online, course-based program, which is open to both domestic and international applicants. The content is highly interactive including regular communication with instructors and other students. Courses are taught by faculty members who are actively engaged in planning practice and research in Canada and beyond.

MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH

Waterloo is offering a course and practicum-based  Master of Public Health  (MPH) degree, building on the successful MSc and PhD degrees in population health currently offered by the School of Public Health and Health Systems. The program is available for both full-time and part-time study. On-campus attendance is required on two occasions for two week block courses. The Foundations in Public Health is the first two week block course which takes place in August, at the start of the program. The Capstone course in Public Health is the second block course which takes place in the final two weeks of the program, during the month of May/June.

All other required courses have no on-campus component. On occasion, new elective courses may be offered on-campus for one term and then offered online during subsequent years.

MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK

The University of Waterloo and the School of Social Work at Renison University College is pleased to offer Canada's first health-focused online  Master of Social Work  (MSW) program. It is being offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Health.

The Master of Social Work is a professional, graduate degree program, delivered primarily online. On-campus attendance is required on two occasions for one-week Summer Institutes. The first Summer Institute is in August at the start of the program and the second is also in August, in the final semester. All other required courses are online with no on-campus component. A practicum of 462 hours will be offered in the students' own community or region, subject to the availability of suitable placement agencies/organizations, and field instructors.

The MSW program will prepare students for advanced social work practice in settings related to health, including public health and health promotion programs, primary care and long-term care, hospitals, health-related governmental agencies, community-based health services, and health advocacy groups.

The  Graduate Diploma in Planning  (GDip) is a post-graduate diploma offered through the School of Planning in the Faculty of Environment. The GDip offers professionals with prior experience in planning the opportunity to expand their knowledge of planning and to keep up-to-date with recent developments. The emphasis is on upgrading planning knowledge and skills in new areas and refreshing core concepts. The GDip is a part-time, online, course-based program that is open to both domestic and international applicants. The content is highly interactive including regular communication with instructors and other students. Courses are taught by faculty members who are actively engaged in planning practice and research in Canada and beyond.

AU’s Doctor of Business Administration is the first online DBA program offered by a Canadian university.

The Doctor of Business Administration is a 21-credit online doctoral program. As a new student, you must complete the entire program through Athabasca University. Potential transfer credit can be evaluated on an individual basis.

There is only 1 DBA intake each year. The application deadline is in March and classes start in Sept. All courses are online grouped study, with defined start and end dates. The program also includes a 1-week on-site research workshop once a year for the first 3 years.

Embarking on the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program at Athabasca University is a fulfilling journey that blends online courses with onsite research workshops. In the first 2 years, you'll complete 6 foundational and research-oriented courses online, along with 2 invaluable onsite research workshops. Your 3rd year is a pivotal moment, as you prepare a dissertation research proposal and take an oral candidacy exam. Upon passing your dissertation, you'll become a doctoral candidate and get the green light to conduct original research, write your dissertation, and defend it before a supervisory committee to earn your doctorate.

To help educators better navigate the increasingly complex and constant changes to educational frameworks, Ontario Tech University now offers an ease-of-access online applied research degree for working professionals.

Ontario Tech’s Doctor of Education (EdD) is a graduate degree program positioned at the core of the modern digital landscape. The fully online program allows educators working in elementary and secondary schools, universities, colleges, and in public and private sector organizations to address challenges that require sophisticated and research-informed responses.

Graduates are prepared to analyze complex problems of practice and use collaborative skills to develop innovative solutions to community issues.  

The cross-faculty and interdisciplinary EdD program focuses on specific aspects of the use of technology in education, including digital practice.

It draws on Ontario Tech faculty members from a wide range of programs within the faculties of Education, Science, Health Sciences, Social Science and Humanities, Business and Information Technology, and Engineering and Applied Science.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Doctorate?

The length of time it takes to complete your doctorate will depend on the university and the type of doctoral program you attend.

On average, it takes 3 to 5 years to earn a doctorate.

The answers to the following questions can significantly impact completion time:

• Does the doctorate require a dissertation?
• How many classes can you take at one time?
• Are you transferring any credits into the program?
• How many weeks long are your classes?
• Is there a residency requirement?
• Is there a professional internship requirement?

As you can see, the best answer we can give you is: it depends.

To give you a ballpark, if you are working toward a professional doctorate (DBA, EdD, PsyD, etc.) and there is no dissertation requirement, you should be able to complete your program in about 2 to 3 years. Some people may be able to complete it in less time, and some may take longer. This is simply an average.

The dissertation requirement of Ph.D. programs can significantly impact your completion time. Generally speaking, it takes most doctoral students 3 to 5 years to complete a Ph.D.

What’s the Quickest Way to Earn a Doctorate Degree?

Just like accelerated online master’s programs , the shortest path to a doctorate will vary depending on your background, the program selected, and the university’s requirements.

The time it takes to complete a doctoral program online varies widely by university. For some universities, 3-year PhD programs are the norm. The official timeline on most university websites is about 3 – 5 years to complete a doctoral degree, but that’s just a general guideline.

If you are looking for the shortest PhD programs, you’ll want to select a program that does not require a dissertation. Dissertations are notorious for taking 2+ years to complete beyond the actual course requirements.

The following doctoral programs do not always require a dissertation: EdD, PsyD, DBA, DPA, and similar professional degrees. Most PhD programs require a dissertation (which means they’ll take longer to complete).

Another way to speed up your degree is by enrolling at a university that offers accelerated (8-week) doctoral courses. Since the courses take half the time to complete, you can finish your studies in less time.

Finally, you’ll want to pick a program that requires fewer credit hours. For example, one university may require 64 credit hours for an EdD while another may only require 42 credits. When looking for the shortest doctorate programs, you’ll want to examine the credit hour requirements closely.

This is also a great way to find the cheapest online doctoral programs. Generally, you’ll pay less tuition if you don’t need as many credit hours for program completion.

Are There Any One-Year Online Doctoral Programs?

When exploring the fastest route to a doctorate, it’s important to understand the available options and their typical timelines.

While some fast track schools offer the possibility of finishing a professional doctorate in 12 to 18 months, most accredited universities generally promote their doctorate programs as taking 3 or more years to complete.

These are some things to consider when looking for a faster doctoral program:

• Standard PhD duration : The usual time frame for completing a PhD is about 3 to 5 years. Occasionally, you might come across a 2-year PhD program, but these programs are quite rare.

If a PhD is not absolutely necessary, you will likely find it easier to find a professional doctorate program that meets these criteria, and it will likely not require a dissertation.

Having to fulfill a dissertation requirement can significantly increase the time it takes to complete your degree.

If speed is the most important factor, then a professional or applied doctorate, such as an online Doctor of Business Administration, Doctor of Psychology, or Doctorate of Education, will likely be the fastest option.

PhD Degrees in Canada

A PhD is the highest degree awarded at global universities. Study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the program. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and as such a student is expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. PhD Entry Requirements

Canadian institutions are free to admit anyone to a PhD program, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours, as well as a master's degree . English language ability proof is a must, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is generally required. There is usually a first-year assessment to remain in study and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed program.

This page explains how to apply to a university in Canada for PhD study, including entry requirements and the documents you’ll need.

You'll normally apply straight to the graduate school that is running your PhD. Some universities will have separate graduate schools for different subject areas. Others will have one large school administering all of their advanced degree programmes.

Admission requirements

The minimum requirement for a PhD in Canada will normally be a Masters degree in a related subject. Unlike in the UK and USA it is quite rare to go straight from undergraduate study to a doctorate. Some universities may allow you to do so if you do some additional Masters-level training.

Admission to a Canadian doctoral programme can be quite competitive. Students will often progress through modules together. This means graduate schools may only have places for a certain number in each year's cohort.

This means that your previous academic attainment will probably be examined quite closely.

In particular, you will usually be asked to provide a Grade Point Average (GPA) score instead of just submitting your final degree result. GPA is the system used in the USA and Canada (as well as some other countries) but is less common in the UK and Europe. It provides a more nuanced representation of your overall performance across a course of study.

Don't worry if your previous universities didn't use a GPA system: it's possible to convert most other grades into a GPA. The following table provides a rough guide to GPA equivalents for UK degree honours:

You'll normally need a GPA of 3.0 or higher for admission to a Canadian PhD programme.

Graduate admissions tests

You may also be asked to provide a score from a Graduate Records Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). This allows universities to assess applicants' suitability for advanced graduate work. Universities will sometimes use these to choose between applicants with similar academic results.

Specific requirements will vary between universities and graduate schools, so check in advance.

Language requirements

You will complete a Canadian PhD in either English or French, depending on which province you study in. English is the most common language of instruction, but universities in Québec will normally teach in French, as will some in New Brunswick.

Whichever language you choose to study in, you'll need to demonstrate that you're proficient in it to complete a PhD. If you're a native speaker or have already studied at university-level in either language that will normally be sufficient. Otherwise, you'll need to complete a language test and submit the score as part of your application.

How to apply to universities in Canada

There two ways you can apply to a university in Canada for PhD study:

• Find an advertised project and apply for it. Many projects will already have a scholarship or stipend attached and will be looking for the ideal candidate.
• Apply to a university's doctoral programme with your own research project. The first step in this case is usually to identify a suitable supervisor and / or research group and contact them to discuss your interest. You may need to apply for funding separately.

Depending on the kind of opportunity you apply for, you'll normally need supply the following:

• Details (and evidence) of your previous study and qualifications : As well as confirmation of your final result (and GPA), Canadian universities may ask to see academic transcripts. These include information on your specific modules and grades. Your previous university/ies should be able to provide this, but you'll need to give them enough time.
• Information on your project details and plans : If you're suggesting your own topic you will normally need to submit a research proposal for it. If you're applying for an advertised opportunity, you may be asked to provide a personal statement .
• Two letters of recommendation : These will serve as your academic references . They should be provided by tutors or instructors who know your work at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Make sure to check that these people are happy to serve as your referees and give them plenty of notice.
• Evidence of test scores for any language tests or graduate admissions exams you've been asked to complete.

Be sure to check the specific requirements at your graduate school (or ask the supervisor you're applying to work with).

Specific deadlines for Canadian PhD applications will often be set by graduate schools. Actual dates will vary, but you should generally apply in the spring for an autumn start, or vice versa. Make sure to allow enough time to put together all of your application materials (and sort your visa, if you need one).

Universities in Canada may arrange a PhD interview to evaluate your application and potential or get to know you better. If so, you may be given the opportunity to conduct your interview via Skype, or a similar video conferencing platform.
