Here's an example of a descriptive essay about nature, accompanied by an explanation of its effectiveness.

Autumn, the season of transformation and melancholic beauty, casts its enchanting spell upon the world. As the year matures, nature bestows upon us a visual and sensory feast like no other. The grand finale of the seasonal symphony, autumn is a time when the Earth dons its most splendid attire, revealing a captivating blend of vibrant colors, crisp air, and a sense of bittersweet nostalgia.

The most striking hallmark of autumn is the resplendent foliage that adorns the trees. Once lush and green, the leaves now transition into a breathtaking display of gold, crimson, and burnt orange. They flutter and descend gracefully to the ground, creating a vibrant carpet underfoot. The rustling sound of leaves in the gentle breeze is a soothing lullaby, and the vibrant tapestry overhead is a masterpiece of nature's artistry.

The air turns cooler, and a newfound crispness invigorates the senses. It carries the delicate scent of fallen leaves and hints of woodsmoke from chimneys. The sun, now lower in the sky, casts a warm, slanted light that bathes everything in a soft, golden glow. It's a light that seems to capture the essence of nostalgia and reflection, reminding us that change is a beautiful and inevitable part of life.

Autumn also brings forth a cornucopia of harvests. Orchards are brimming with apples and pears, and pumpkin patches offer their bounty for the coming season's festivities. The vibrant hues of autumn fruits and vegetables mirror the natural world's transformation and serve as a reminder of our connection to the Earth's cycles.

This season of transition, however, is also tinged with melancholy. As the days grow shorter, we feel the impending hush of winter drawing near. The world appears to be in a state of graceful surrender, a lesson in letting go. Yet, in this release, there is a profound beauty that speaks to the transient nature of all things, a reminder that endings give way to new beginnings.

As autumn unfurls its rich tapestry, it encourages us to pause and savor the moment, to embrace the fleeting beauty of life's ever-changing seasons. It is a season that speaks to the heart and soul, offering a chance to reflect on the past, cherish the present, and anticipate the future. Autumn is not just a season; it is a profound and poetic meditation on the passage of time and the exquisite beauty found in the artful hand of nature.

Descriptive Writing in the Fall

It’s no secret that autumn is our absolute favorite season. With the explosive colors abounding on the trees, the crisp and clean air whipping around, and the chilling temperatures, it just makes us want to snuggle in our coziest hoodie while watching a crackling fire. This makes it the perfect time to explore descriptive writing in the fall.

This week, I taught one of my middle school classes how to write a descriptive essay about fall. A descriptive essay is a written account describing something or an experience. At first, it may feel like something you don’t have to put much time into teaching. Just throw in some adjectives and you’re good to go! Yet, there’s more to it than that.

Let’s dive into how I taught descriptive writing during the fall this past week.

Descriptive Writing in the Fall: Fall Leaves by Loretta Holland

Pre-Writing

As part of the pre-writing activities, we first spent time learning various figurative language. We explored examples of each of the following: similes, metaphors, idioms, allusion, alliteration, personification, and onomatopoeia. Students identified each of the figurative language terms within writing and then they did the work of explaining the meaning behind each of the examples.

Next, they wrote their own similes, metaphors, idioms, etc. When I felt they had this concept down well after a couple classes of practice, we went on a walk during the next English class!

Yes, an actual walk! Students grabbed their journals and pencils and we headed outside to go on an autumn walk. We went from tree to tree and from either side of the parking lot, pausing to observe and enjoy the beautiful autumn weather.

Students penned what they saw, what they felt, and what they smelled and heard. I asked them to focus on the five senses as they followed me around outside of our school building. Students had to write down at least ten things they observed in natural.

To continue the learning concerning descriptive writing in the fall, I then took them back inside and explained how the words that describe autumn with their five senses are called sensory words.

Descriptive Writing in the Fall: Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak

These sensory words would be key to their descriptive essay. Then, we went through some key components of a descriptive essay as outlined in our grammar curriculum. I explained each component in detail.

Key Parts of Descriptive Writing

  • Showing instead of telling
  • Sensory Words
  • Various Figurative Language
  • Adjectives and Adverbs
  • Emphasis on Onomatopoeia

The last part of the prewriting process was to read various other descriptive essays to get an idea on how a descriptive essay was structured. I chose to go simpler with my students and wanted their essays to be three paragraphs, so we read two to three paragraph essays on fall, on desserts, and on fear. (Perfect for Halloween!) I hoped to get them inspired with these published descriptive essays.

Students spent two class periods writing their rough drafts. I tend to leave them completely alone while they complete this.

As Jane Yolen, author of Owl Moon , states, “I generally do not think out plots or characters ahead of time. I let things roll along. Organic is the word I use for this.”

I want only their thoughts and ideas in raw form to come through while working on their descriptive writing.

Peer editing is important in the writing process. I believe it helps teach students to pay careful attention to various aspects of their partner’s paper which they can then take those skills back to their essay.

If a student is editing a paper and finding it lacks figurative language, they can make that suggestion to their partner, and then they know to check their own paper to ensure it has adequate figurative language.

Descriptive Writing in the Fall: Figurative Language Books with Epic School Access

Students used a checklist to peer edit which utilized the descriptive essay checklist above, as well as added parts for grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.

Revising and Editing Conference

When deep in a writing project, I always make time to sit down and revise and edit one on one with students. Sometimes this takes more than one class period, or sometimes I complete this step with a few students a day as we have other English related items to squeeze in.

Teacher editing is to ensure that if a student misses something during the peer editing process, we can find and improve upon the writing during this final critique.

We normally go through the checklist again and fix any grammar and mechanics issues. Also, I give them any tips I have to make their essays even more descriptive.

One of my students described fall by writing the trees looked like Fruity Pebbles. That really stuck and I loved it so much, I told the rest of the class about this wonderful metaphor. Using time to share wonderful sentences can inspire students to think outside of the box.

Last, the students are responsible for modifying any suggestions made by their peer and myself. They are responsible for the absolute final part of publishing their paper and ensuring it is as good as it can be.

My students are in the publishing part of the writing process right now, and they’re in for a treat. Next week, once their descriptive essay is complete, they’ll illustrate their writing using watercolor paints.

We are also going to discuss how illustrations are extremely important in picture books and how an illustration can be the cherry on top of a descriptive essay.

Descriptive Writing in the Fall: The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry

We are going to explore picture books with beautiful illustrations that really add beauty to the stories. Students will paint what they were describing in their essays. I have a feeling the pictures will turn out wonderfully with all the autumn colors displayed in watercolor.

Descriptive writing in the fall, with the right formula, can be a fun and simple writing project. By incorporating teaching figurative language and the writing process, you can hit many standards in one fell swoop. Students enjoy taking a detour from their normal English lessons, like grammar and reading novels, to utilize their creativity all thr while taking advantage of the beauty of this current season of fall.

Writing the seasons: Autumn

exmoor heather

Autumn  is the slow decline of the year toward the winter, a slow lingering death from the height of summer into the cold and dark. Yet autumn is far from miserable. I love the unexpected warm days. I love the colours of the season and the wind and rain feels quite energetic and powerful. It has always felt like a season of portents and omens, birds are flocking, deer are rutting, autumnal colour is everywhere.

So how do we write what autumn feels like?

Exmoor September 2012. Copyright MG Mason

Autumn is nothing if not atmospheric. Countless horror movies are set at this time of year, no better demonstrated than it the cold and imposing forests of The Blair Witch Project and The Village . These are films that use Autumn atmosphere to maximum effect. It is the perfect time of year because death is a constant reminder. It is getting colder and darker; leaves are falling from the trees. There is a chill in the air overnight, frost on the ground in the morning, mist and fog in the air. Dry, dead leaves crunch beneath your feet and clouds appear when you breathe out. There is still a lingering warmth but always a constant reminder of the cold to come.

It is also the season of Halloween and in the Commonwealth, Bonfire Night. Those five days between the end of October and the beginning of November is, for me, the beginning of the build up to the Christmas season. People actually begin to enjoy the colder weather and the darker evenings as it reminds of the what is to come.

Autumn: Life and death

Autumn smells of frost. Yes, I do think frost has a smell and I do not find it unpleasant. It is a dry, sharp, prickly smell that you can experience first thing in the morning, within the first hour of sunrise. It is also the smell of fruit waiting to be picked or that which turned rotten before falling off the trees/bushes/shrubs.

Autumn smells of woodfire, bonfires and the gunpowder of firework displays.

Despite the slow descent towards a seeming death, there is still much life in the old year yet. Before they all drop off of the trees, leaves turn dazzling colours of ambers, reds and yellows creating images like this.

The English countryside is famous for this sort of scene throughout the autumn. It is also the season of fruitpicking: apples, pears and to any child… blackberries! These are not just colourful but a reminder of the pinnacle of the livelihood of the season at the end of the year.

Also think about the sort of clothing that people might wear at this time of year. Scarves, woolies, larger coats, sweaters. For men, jackets more often than not. For women, the fashion seems to be in boots a lot more, cardigans. People are wrapping up warm but not wrapped up so tightly just yet.

And don’t forget the flocking birds.

Autumn is noticeable for the absence of birdsong mostly and with leaves dropping off, you won’t hear wind rustling through the trees for very long.

What are the autumn sounds? Whistling wind, roaring wind, heavier rain. For those of us living in the countryside it is a season of shrieking foxes, of the calling of deer for the rutting season. Small mammals such as badgers and squirrels scramble through the undergrowth during the darker evenings and overnight.

Give a serious think to the sort of foods that will be available at this time of year and how personal preferences might change.

Aside from autumn fruits, it is associated with heavier or more filling foods. I tend to drink more coffee in the autumn and winter and more tea in the spring and summer. My beer tastes also change. I prefer something a bit more full-bodied at this time of year, ruby ales, Newcastle Brown, darker and heavier beers as opposed to spring and summer where I prefer golden ales and sometimes lager. I also tend to drink more red wine at this time of year and prefer them full-bodied. It is also the season of mulled wine – though I don’t tend to want to drink this until Christmas lights start making an appearance.

Most mornings, everything outside is damp with dew. Goosebumps raise on bare arms. Feet crunch on and swish through piles of dead leaves. On the really cold days, feet crunch on frozen earth. Also, on those warm days think about how the sun feels on your skin. It is a very different feeling to that in spring or summer.

So over to you, what signifies the autumn for you? How do you identify the arrival of this season?

I think you did a pretty good job of describing autumn. It’s my favourite season. The terror of summer has ended and the whole hemisphere breathes a sigh of relief, relaxing into crunchy reds and browns. The air is cool and the food is good.

Here in Japan it normally begins when a typhoon comes and sweeps away the heat and humidity and then we’re left with cool air and I can breathe again. But autumn only lasts a couple of weeks here and then it’s winter again. I’ve decided to write more about my life in Japan in my blog to get it going again. More importantly, how living abroad affects my writing. That will be my main topic, but like you I think I’ll write about some other topics now and again. In fact, I might join you on reviewing ‘Doctor Who’. We can compare opinions.

Excellent, I look forward to reading all about it. A lot of people are fascinated with Japan; me not so much but I’m willing to be educated about it.

Get blogging!

Thanks. It’s been hard to find a consistent topic, so I hope I can stick with it! I’ll have a new post this weekend, and I’ll put up some links soon – your site included.

As the days get shorter, my walks in the morning now coincide with dawn instread of after or before. And dawn, or just before dawn, is when our local skunk goes out to make her daily round. So, for me, where I live now, fall is a cool, foggy morning drenched with the musky odor of skunk.

I don’t know what skunk smells like. I imagine I’d rather not find out!

Think: vomit-inducing musky tear-gas.

Eugh, lovely

My Favorite Autumn Season Essay For Students

The autumn season lightens up the mood of even an unhappy soul with its brightly-hued foliage. The enchanting sight of the leaves when the wind rustles them softly is something to be experienced and not described in words.

The autumn season comes out with its magnificent display of colours such as yellow, gold, brown and red which add a special charm to man-made buildings and structures. It’s during this time that trees shed their leaves and become bare. The brown, dead leaves that are left behind give the trees a dull look and they may not always look attractive. However, once the first winter snow starts falling, these leafless trees assume an enchanting beauty which can be compared to none other. During this season there is abundance of fruits like persimmon and grapes which are available in plenty. Tourists throng to see famous autumn leaves spots around Japan.

The autumn season is closely associated with poems , paintings and songs which enhance the charm of this season. The cherry blossom festival, chrysanthemum shows and kabuki performances are some of the interesting events that take place during autumn. Art galleries and museums become very active during this time and special exhibitions are put up for guests.
