JNU PhD Admissions Via JNUEE

It is critical for aspirants who seek to pursue a doctoral degree (PhD) at JNU to qualify for the JNUEE entrance examination. JNUEE, a university-level entrance exam, is administered every year to admit meritorious candidates into JNU’s PhD, UG, PG, M.Phil and other integrated courses. JNUEE results for PhD Courses (2022) were declared on the 10th of January, 2023. 

Individuals aspiring to enrol for the PhD courses at JNU had to undertake the JNUEE (PhD) exam between 5th June and 12th June 2023. Candidates awaiting the final answer keys for JNUEE (PhD courses) exam can check them at the JNUEE PhD Results official website of the administrating body.  

Eligibility Criteria for JNUEE (PhD) 

Candidates who wish to pursue doctoral courses at the JNU must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

  • Individuals must be holding a master’s degree in any similar subject with a minimum aggregate score of 50%. 
  • Individuals must be holding citizenship in India. 
  • Candidates hailing from international borders are also eligible for the said exam.
  • Individuals below the age limit of 17 will not be considered eligible for the exam.

JNU PhD Admissions Via JRF Category

Individuals who wish to pursue PhD courses from JNU can opt for the JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) category. Under this category, candidates can apply for admission without the need to sit for the JNUEE Exam. In other words, JRF candidates will be exempted from undertaking the JNUEE Entrance Exam. Those who wish to apply for admission under the said category may do so between the 5th of July and the 4th of August 2023.

Aspirants intending to apply for admission into JNU’s PhD programmes can register themselves between the 5th of July and the 4th of August 2023. Individuals must register on https://jnuee.jnu.ac.in to register for admission. 

How to Apply for JNU PhD Admission Under JRF? 

Those who wish to apply for JNU PhD admission under JRF can refer to the following steps. 

  • Interested candidates must first visit JNU’s official admission portal to register themselves. 
  • Aspirants must click on the ‘Apply for PhD programme’ option. 
  • After doing so, one must click on ‘new registration’. 
  • Candidates must log into their accounts by entering their designated credentials. 
  • Once done with that, candidates must simply enter the requisite data, i.e., personal information and qualifications. 
  • One must upload their photographs and signatures to ensure a successful registration process. 
  • One must pay the requisite registration fee to complete the application process. 

Eligibility and Selection Criteria for JRF Candidates 

Candidates applying for JNU PhD admission via the JRF category must meet the following pre-requisites: 

  • Candidates must have qualified for JRF CSIR/UGC National Eligibility Test (NET)/ICMR/AYUSH/DBT Examinations. 
  • JRF Candidates are not required to undertake the JNUEE 2023 Exam for PhD admission. 
  • Individuals are curated and selected based on their applications under the JRF category. Selected candidates are further called for their viva-voce rounds. Aspirants must clear the viva rounds to ensure a successful selection process. 
  • One must acquire a score of 100% in their viva round to be selected.

As of 2023, JNU UG students managed to bag a median salary package of INR 6 LPA, while PG graduates were placed with an average package of INR 7.95 LPA. This year, corporations such as McKinsey, Legato, Adobe, Google, Samsung, Sapient, Siemens, Infosys, and HCL, participated in the recruitment drive. 

The academic year of 2021-2022 was a successful run for JNU as it managed to conduct a lucrative recruitment drive. Qualifications for PhD in educational studies at JNU

I wish to pursue research in Educational Studies from JNU (Zakir Hussain centre for educational studies). On the website it says they offer four specialisations (history, economics, sociology, and psychology). my_qualifications : masters degree in business administration (MBA) and a bachelors degree in commerce which is not related to educational studies at all. If i clear the entrance test for JNU, will they consider me for admission in this centre? With my background in management, can i make it in provided that I qualify the test and interview? I also hope to qualify NET and receive JRF. Will that help my chances?

Direct PhD programme

Direct PhD programme is open to scholars who have completed an MPhil degree or have demonstrated their research capability by way of equivalent published work.

Students seeking admission to the Programme are required to bring with them a synopsis of about 1000 words, indicating a research theme, the questions and issues to be explored, and the types of sources to be consulted.

Candidates applying for the Programme are allowed to exercise only one option, that is, Ancient or Medieval or Modern, and the chosen option must be clearly mentioned at the appropriate column in the Application Form.

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.

Doctor of Philosophy in Education

The Johns Hopkins School of Education’s full-time PhD program offers an individually tailored learning experience based on a student’s interest in finding solutions to pressing education problems. Select applicants receive full tuition and a stipend.

The School of Education will pause admission to the Doctor of Philosophy in Education (PhD) program for the 2025-26 academic year while we add several programmatic improvements. The next intake for admission to the PhD program will be for students who want to matriculate in the Fall 2026 semester. The online application will open in August 2025 to begin accepting submissions, and the application completion deadline will be December 16, 2025. The program provides rigorous interdisciplinary training that develops students’ abilities to conduct evidence-based research on real-world educational challenges. Instruction and mentorship emphasizes the development and evaluation of policies and practices that address real-world educational problems.

The full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education at the Johns Hopkins School of Education embraces that tradition. We offer a world-class, research-focused program that prepares exceptional scholars to investigate and develop policies and practices that improve educational outcomes from pre-K through secondary school and beyond.

Students draw insights from different disciplines (e.g., educational psychology, learning sciences, sociology of education), synthesizing their knowledge to craft multidisciplinary, evidence-based approaches to address educational policies and practices — particularly those that can improve outcomes for historically underserved populations. Immersion in modern research methods — advanced statistical techniques, open science approaches, and data science — facilitates students’ capacities to argue for research-based educational reforms.

Students benefit from the mentorship of nationally acclaimed researchers in an apprenticeship model as well as collaborative learning opportunities from courses, research groups, and their cohort. Our graduates go on to careers in higher education as professors, policymakers, and influential scholars at research-intensive universities, institutes, and centers.

All PhD students at the School of Education are eligible for a fellowship for up to four years. The fellowship includes a yearly stipend and will cover tuition and fees. The fellowship also covers individual health, dental, and vision insurance. "The examination will deal with topics which are covered in any standard Masters level course pertaining to History, Anthropology, Economics, Political Science and Sociology.
In addition, the candidates are expected to have comprehensive understanding on the various dimensions of discrimination and exclusion faced by Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) Gender, Disability Exclusion in terms of different social aspects and various Minority groups in India. The interpretation of these societal dimensions can only be understood through a proper knowledge of research methodology. The definition of research methodology in itself is a difficult task, divided in terms of approaches ranging from the qualitative to quantitative. "Envisaged primarily as a centre for research and academic study, the Centre for Media Studies has been teaching and researching in the fields of media studies, which include: Histories of media, Political economy of Media, Media and issues of language, Media democracy and dimensions of rights and justice, violence and media, Media technologies and cultural industries, Media and the nature of connectivities, visual culture, theories and methods in media studies.

Jnu’s etd repository.

Theses and Dissertations are one of the important primary sources of information; and generally, libraries of every academic institution maintain a separate collection of theses and dissertations for reference of their user community. Normally, theses and dissertations are meant to be used within the library premises, therefore, access to and use of these valuable resources of every library is limited.

The Central Library of the University has been receiving theses and dissertations from various schools, centres and affiliated institutions of the university. The Library maintains a separate collection of theses and dissertation, and its bibliographic details are maintained along with other library resources. Users can search it in the online public access catalogue (OPAC) of JNU Library which is available at or can be accessed from Home Page of Central Library http://www.jnu.ac.in/Library

The date of oldest thesis available in the library goes back to the year 1960 when the doctorate degree was awarded to Tarun Chandra Bose by former Indian School of International Studies (ISIS), University of Delhi which was later merged in JNU. The thesis of first PhD awarded by JNU in the year 1970 is also available in the library. As on March 2014, JNU library has over 21,000 theses and dissertations awarded by the University and its affiliated institutes. The research topics of this collection are from various subject domains of humanities, social sciences & sciences disciplines. The collection contains approximately 18,000 unique theses and dissertation titles.

Advent and proliferation of information and communication technologies has greatly influenced the way information sources are managed and disseminated by libraries. Simultaneously, it has also impacted the information seeking behaviour of library users and has raised their expectations from libraries. Therefore, the library envisioned to make Table of Contents (TOC) of theses and dissertations available online along with the its bibliographic details in OPAC.

In 2007, the library started in-house project to digitise title page and TOC of theses and dissertations in order to make them available as part of bibliographic records. Approximately, ten thousand theses and dissertations were scanned and their TOC were uploaded bibliographic database of the library. This increased users’ satisfaction level as well as commitment of the library towards applications of ICT Infrastructure in library activities.

In 2012, the library took one more gigantic step towards increasing visibility and usage of its theses and dissertation collection by digitizing them and started project for digitization of all the theses and dissertations available with library. Digitization work has been outsourced and till date, more than 17,000 hard volumes of theses and dissertations have been digitized. More than 30 lacs digitized pages restrain knowledge of over 5,500 PhD theses and more than 12,000 M.Phil. dissertations. Almost all available back volumes of theses and dissertations have already been digitised; and, the work on the newly received theses and dissertations is in progress. It is expected to be completed in near future.

Recently, the University has signed an MoU with INFLIBNET Centre and accordingly has provided digitized copy of more than 5,000 PhD theses to INFLIBNET Centre to make them available in Shodhganga .

Furthermore, the University envisioned and started developing its own online repository of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). Although, JNU’s PhD theses are available in Shodhganga, its ETD Repository envisages making MPhil Dissertations available in public domain along with PhD theses. The university has framed its policy for availability of ETDs under open access with an embargo period of three years. The requisite infrastructure for development of JNU’s ETD Repository is ready; work is progressing with a rapid pace and it is expected to make it available at http://etd.lib.jnu.ac.in very soon.

Launched in 1975, the Ph.D. Programme at CDS offers registration under the Jawaharlal Nehru University. The Centre is also a recognised research centre of the University of Kerala for its doctoral programme.

Eligibility: An MPhil degree from any Indian university recognized by the UGC or from a foreign educational institution OR Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in General Category and 50% marks in OBC (NCL),SC,ST and Person with Disability (PWD) or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) OR an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency, which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

PhD scholars may avail the UGC’s JRF/SRF, RGNF, Moulana Azad Fellowships and the Kerala State Government fellowship for SC/ST students. Students who have not qualified for fellowships from other sources may avail a small number of ICSSR fellowships on a competitive basis. Fellowship award will be based on a separate interview in the presence of sponsoring agencies.

PhD Internship Abroad Programme (PIA)

To bring about more international exposure to research students, the PhD Internship Abroad (PIA) programme was launched in 2016-17. This enables PhD scholars to spend time in research work at an institute of repute in any part of the world.

PhD Programme in Economics and Public Policy (with focus on Industrial Development)

Isid phd programme is duly recognised by jawaharlal nehru university (jnu), new delhi.

The programme is designed to build a cadre of trained researchers in economics and public policy with a special focus on industrialization which is integral to economic development. ISID being a specialized institute on industrial development provides the scholars with specialised research environment and excellent infrastructure facilities.

The programme comprises of a one-year coursework component followed by dissertation work. The training in the programme will impart skills and knowledge that would provide career opportunities in academia, policy, and development institutions and think tanks.

Admission to the programme is on a full-time basis. However, some candidates can be admitted on a part-time basis, as per the UGC regulations.

ISID will provide financial support to all full-time scholars not availing of other fellowships.

Candidates with Master’s degree in Economics and related disciplines with UGC Net score as per UGC norms will be eligible to be considered for this programme. 

Reservation policies will be applicable as per the UGC guidelines.

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
