25 For and Against Essay Topics and Ideas that Double as Conversation Topics

25 for and against essay topics that can be also used for class debates.

For and against essay topics: layout.

• The first paragraph should be the introduction. Include a thesis statement, which summarises the main issue.

In the past, most people lived with their parents until they got married. But in the modern world, it is more common to leave home and share accommodation with friends. This choice has both positive and negative aspects.

• The second paragraph should focus on the advantages. Include at least two arguments, if possible. Give examples where appropriate, introduced by phrases like For example or For instanc e.

There are several advantages to sharing with friends. Firstly, it gives you the opportunity to spend time with your friends and to build strong relationships with them. Secondly, it allows you to develop some of the practical skills that you will need as an independent adult. For instance, you will learn how to manage household bills, how to shop and cook, and so on. And thirdly, it makes living in your own home more affordable, and the more people who share, the more cost-effective it is. For instance , a shared house for six people is far cheaper than two houses for three people.

• The third paragraph should focus on the disadvantages. Include at least two arguments, if possible. Begin the third paragraph with a phrase like On the other hand or Howeve r,.. to express contrast with statements in the previous paragraph.

On the other hand , sharing a home has its disadvantages. Sharing a house can often cause disagreements. For instance, housemates often argue about household chores. What is more, it can be difficult to have time alone when you need it. And finally, the houses which young people share are sometimes in poor condition and landlords are not always good at repairing appliances when they break down.

• The fourth paragraph should be the conclusion. State your own opinion and decide whether the arguments for outweigh the arguments against the thesis statement or the other way around.

Although sharing a house with other young people is not always easy, the advantages definitely outweigh the problems. It is certainly something I would like to do in a few years’ time.

INGLÉS | Writing - For and against essay (pros & cons essay)

2. WRITING – ESTRUCTURA DE UN "FOR & AGAINST ESSAY"

The use of mobile phones at schools. Many people think that the use of mobile phones at schools isn’t a good idea, because it is a distraction for teenagers in the class, they can do video and photos and talk to other people. In the first place, this is a new form of distraction in this years by new technologies and we can see the different results in exams and those are down. In the other hand, people think that this is necessary for the teenagers, because they can have an emergency or they can use to find information about class activities too. I think that this use of mobile should be used for cases of emergency, for talk about the family in important moments or use in class works.

One of the objetives of technology is make life easier. From the nineteenth century the technology advanced incredibly. A lot of inventions and discoveries had part in this century. Now the technology advances in giant steps, but while some people think this is good for us, other people disagree with they.

In one hand, people thnik that the actual technology make our life so easy and good, and that the incoming advances will make it better. The mobile phones, the consoles, the hybrid cars… all for a better world.

But in the other hand, some people think that the technology make us lazy and useless, and that without technology we won’t survive. Now, persons who haven’t a mobile phone for chat are weird.

Personally, I think that the technology and the following technology will make our life easier and better, but I think too that nobody can afford depend of the new inventions for have a good life.

Manuel Martín Romero

Many people think that modern technology make life more convenient because we can communicate with people around the worl in real time but there are people who think the life was better when technology was simpler because now people can’t be without internet, they’re addict.

On the one hand, modern technology is a great way of life. With the new mobile phones we can talk to everybody around the world, with internet we can search many information in many time, and we can make new cars, vaccines, etc.

On the other hand, modern techonology is the worst. People can’t stop to use mobile phones and they’re always getting distracted. With modern technology we are non-social.

From my point of view, modern technology make life more convenient because we have more ways to learn something.

The use of mobile phones at school has been very debated. Nowadays they aren’t allowed at schools. Let’s see if it was a good idea or not.

It’s said that mobile phones are very unuseful because many people get distracted by them. Children could use it against teachers and their classmates and it could disturb the class.

But, The new intelligent mobile phones have lots of app such as dictionaries, calculators, audiobooks that are useful for the everyday cñass amd the experimental class like physics and chemistry like watchstops.

In our opinion the use of mobile phones is good in class if they are usedin a good way.

7. Discuss some of the arguments for and against keeping animals in zoos.

Keeping animals in zoos

Keeping animals in zoos is a very discussed topic. I think zoos are awesome because we can see animals that are so far in its habitat. But it’s horrible to be jailed there, in an artificial place. I think what is better to do is saving wounded animals in zoos.

Sorry, teacher. Here you are my complete composition:

Keeping animals in zoos is a very discussed topic. Some people think it is a very interesting facility where you can enjoy with your family. But a lot of people hates zoos because they are like a jail for animals.

On the one hand, I think zoos are awesome because we can see animals whose habitat is far away. Another advantage of keeping animals in zoos is that endangered animals can be saved there. Zoos are also a research center where biologists and veterinarians can investigate animals to obtain information that will help them.

On the other hand, it’s horrible to animals being jailed there. There are zoos where animals are not maintained properly. That is awful because it can contribute to the extinction of the animals.

To conclude, I think that zoos would be a nice facility if its workers work properly.

Nowadays computers are really important for us, because we use it to do quick operations, which is very good to help us quickly.

I think that using the computer to do most of the things in a job, is so good, because if you have the resources and using it you will increase your efficiency, you have to use it.

But we have a serious problem, and this is that if people only use the computer to do the operations, someday if they haven’t got a computer or something similar.

Finally I think that we have to use the computer for working, but only when is really necessary, because if we abuse of computers, we could have bad results.

I’ll talk about the topic which make reference to the use of internet instead of a book or any other written source of information. For many people the use of internet is better, it’s the majority, but other people believe that internet is something bad.

Nowadays intenet is the best option to look for any type of information, you can find everything you want there. It’s really useful not only to find information, its really enjoyable in spite of its inconvenients. You can watch films, play free videogames or chat with from any place in the world. You can use internet for everything you want.

On the other hand, intenet has its bad face. It’s also dangerous, you must be careful with you privacy because anyone can see for example the place where you live, your bank details, etc. To sum up, they can supplant your identity.

From my point of view, internet is the best option for everything is intenet. Everything is dangerous if you aren’t careful with it. So I just have careful with my private information and the pages that I visit.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of keeping animals on zoos?

Nowadays, a lot of animals live in zoos. Is it right or wrong to keep them in the zoos? The following essay presents some advantages and disadvantages of this problem.

First, people can see beautiful and exotic animals. They can see how animals live. Animals have good life conditions in zoos. They don’t starve because they have food and water. People don’t kill them and animals live as close to the natural habitat as possible.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages of keeping animals in zoos. Animals live in an environment to which they are accustomed. Another disadvantage is that animals should live naturally and not as zoo owners want. Besides animals in zoos are mistreated and badly maintained by visitors in the zoo.

In short, keeping animals in zoos can be fun for the public to visit the zoo and also unpleasant for the animals that live at the zoo.

For many people, the use of mobile phones at schools is a good idea for the students because if they have a problem and need talk with their parents, the mobile phone is indispensable to contact. However, this reason can be very harmful for people; students can bore and they use the mobile phone to play or to chat.

On the one hand, it’s very necessary in the life of one person the use of mobile phone: you can make a photo, you can to chat with your friends, you can read books and news, you have internet and you can call to people in everywhere and whenever.

On the other hand, also there are disadvantages about the use of mobile phone in school. For example, the mobile phone you can sound in class and interrupt to the students and the teacher. In addition, you can get distracted in the class using the mobile for play; for this, you don’t listen the teacher. Also, is possible to lose the mobile.

In short, in the life the use of mobile phones is very necessary to use when you need really but not necessary for play in the class or in the work.

18.-Should money be spent on space exploration?

The NASA program has done incredible research in its time. It is used for science, maths, and even to protect mankind (for example from asteroids). There are thousands of different technologies that have been discovered by NASA as a result of space exploration. And we can live in the space too.

But in the other hand we need to start helping starving and homeless people. We could spend our money on that instead of spending it on space exploration. Also, 18 astronauts have died because of flight incidents.

On the one hand, it is often said that preparing meat involves cruelty to animals. Besides, people think that most vegetarians are lacking in protein and iron and other important nutrients in their bodies. However, nuts contain relatively high amounts of protein. Besides, being a vegetarian will also decrease the risk of getting heart attack and other few diseases as most of the vegetarian foods contains low amounts of carbohydrates and fats compared to meat products.

On the other hand a decrease in animal slaughtering for food purpose will also lead to ecological imbalance: humans are predators and animals are prey. Moreover, the human brain likely would never have evolved into its current form without the ingestion of meat.

In short, being a vegetarian has both advantages and disadvantages. But I couldn’t live without a good big steak from time to time.

For and against essay

30.Will modern technology such as the internet ever replace the book or the written word as the main source of information?

Today almost people around the world use internet and products that permit its use, like mobiles phones and computers, are each day more innovative and attractive for consumers.

On the one hand, this technology is very handy, because you can use it everywhere; and yet cheaper, because with only one mobile or one computer you can access almost all kind of information and eBooks.

On the other hand, we are losing the tradition of buying books that have been the main source of knowledge until recently. Furthermore, in internet you can find false information that could be believed.

From my point of view, internet is one of the better discovery of humanity and its use nowadays is essential, so I think it will replace the written word soon.

Lucía Anguita :

TV: could you be without it? Discuss

I’m going to talk about the need of the TV in the houses. Many people think that the Tv it’s completely necessary because they think that if they don’t see the Tv they seem crazy. This problem is evident, above all, in the children. Many childrens are habituated to be in front of the screen the most part of the day and their parents thinks that all it’s good, it’s ok.

In the firts place it’s true that the Tv it’s a good entertaiment, for all the ages. You can find the news, cartoons, documentaries, etc. But, the Tv, it’s really good when you are tired and you need don’t think. On the other hand the people think that the Tv is a stupid box that create a society without own ideas. They think that the Tv give the words that the ‘politicians’ want that we listen.

From my point of view, the people could be without the Tv perfectly, the childrens must play with the toys, the screem only develop the confortable side of the boy/ girl. We are enough intelligent for have own ideas, and I think that there aren’t nothing better than a book!

But this is only my opinion, the book of the likes is white!

3. Are women are better parents than men?

I’m going to talk about this question, are women are better parents than men? This is a typical question in a street survey,For many people think her opinion, clear is that if you are a men, you thinks that you are more better, also, if you are a woman, your thinkings are changes, you think that the women are better.

That’s right, I’m going to give you advantages about this question. In the first place, the woman always had been with children and in a few of cases, the women went to work, and they had no hard work, if they had… This we can say us that the women have a special relationship with the child. The man, don’t have those treatments.

On the other hand, in 21th century, it changed all of paper, now the women are working in a building or in a office. They have hard work such as hard not work, this we can explain us that the women, now they don’t have the special relationship and also, the men can pass more time with her child because the housework is divided.

In my opinion, men and women can do the same for her children. Shouldn’t have been a different treatments if is your father your nurse, or if is your mother so. All extremes are bad so if we put in a balance, everything it’s adjusted.

Preparation

Writing Strategy

When you write an essay, you need to ensure that it has a clear structure.

Paragraph 1: introduction (stating the issue)

Paragraph 2: arguments for the statement

Paragraph 3: arguments against the statement

Paragraph 4: summary, your own opinion

1. Read the Writing Strategy and the task below. What ideas do you expect to see in the essay?

‘A problem shared is a problem halved.’ Write an essay in which you offer arguments for and against discussing your personal problems with a friend.

your own answers

2. Look at the phrases below. Find five more phrases for introducing arguments in the essay.

Introducing one side of the argument

1 ………………………………………………………

It can be argued that …

2 ………………………………………………………

On the one hand, …

3 ………………………………………………………

Furthermore, / Moreover, …

Introducing the other side of the argument

On the other hand, …

4 ………………………………………………………

Having said that, … / That said, …

5 ………………………………………………………

6 ………………………………………………………

When people say that ‘a problem shared is a problem halved,’ they mean that it is good to talk about your issues with someone else. While this may be true, there can also be disadvantages to looking for help in this way.

The first advantage of talking to a friend about a personal problem is that you will gain sympathy and support from someone who cares about you. No one can deny that it is very helpful to have someone who listens to you and shows concern. Even if your friend can’t offer practical advice, it will still make you feel better. It is also true that talking through a problem can help you come to a solution yourself.

So are there any disadvantages in confiding in friends in this way? Although it is true that it is helpful to share your problems with a friend, we should also remember that it is not a good idea to talk about your personal problems to everybody, or it can easily become gossip. It is important to pick one good friend that you can trust to keep your problem to themselves. Moreover, not everybody is kind, so you can end up feeling worse, unless you choose your friend wisely.

To sum up, talking about your problems to a friend is a very beneficial thing to do, provided that you pick the right person. A good friend is one you can trust.

1    The first advantage …

2    No one can deny that …

3   It is also true that …

4    While this may be true …

5    Although it is true that …

6    …, we should also remember that …

3. Write the second sentence so that it has the same meaning as the first. Use the words in brackets.

1   I’ll do the dishes if you clean the kitchen. (provided that)

     …………………………………….

2   Despite the fact that he seems nice, I still don’t trust him. (even though)

3   Always try everything, despite the possibility it might not work out. (even if)

4   He’ll fix your bike if you lend it to him on Saturday. (on condition that)

5   If I study all week, I’ll pass the exam. (provided that)

1   I’ll do the dishes provided that you clean the kitchen.

2   Even though he seems nice, I still don’t trust him.

3   Always try everything, even if it might not work out.

4   He’ll fix your bike on condition that you lend it to him on Saturday.

5   Provided that I study all week, I’ll pass the exam.

Writing Guide

‘You should always paddle your own canoe.’ Write an essay in which you offer arguments for and against being totally independent, not asking for help and only relying on yourself.

Extra exercises.

Always start by planning your arguments. Write down three or four ideas for and three or four against the topic. Choose the best two arguments for each side of the issue, and develop them by adding a comment or providing an example.

1. Read the Strategy and look at the arguments below against sharing a flat with a sibling. Develop the arguments. Use the questions to help you.

1    It may mean no privacy for both of you.

Will you be able to keep your ‘private life’ away from your sibling? What might they report back to your parents?

2   It will lead to arguments over household chores.

Why will it be difficult to share out the chores? How might this affect your relationship?

3   There may be pressure to hang out constantly.

Why will it be difficult to have space for yourself?

What might your sibling think if you refuse to go out with him/her one evening?

2. Read the task below and write your essay.

Some parents have access to their teenage children’s accounts on social media and control their online activities. Write an essay in which you discuss arguments for and against the attitude of these parents.
