Extraction விமர்சனம்

இந்திய போதைக் கடத்தல் மன்னன் சிறையில் அடைபட்டிருக்க, அவனது மகன் ஓவி மஹாஜனைக் கடத்தி விடுகிறான் பங்களாதேஷ் கடத்தல் மன்னன் அமிர். ஓவியைப் பணயத் தொகை தராமல் விடுவிக்க, ஆஸ்திரேலியாவிலிருந்து ஒரு கூலிப்படை பங்களாதேஷ் தலைநகரம் டாக்காவில் இறங்குகிறது. அடைபட்ட பையனை, ஆஸ்திரேலியக் கூலிப்படையைச் சேர்ந்த நாயகன் டைலர் வெளியில் கொண்டு வந்த பிறகு, ஆஸ்திரேலியக் குழு யாரோ ஒருவனால் தாக்கப்படுகிறது. மறுபுறம், ஓவியை மீட்டுக் கொல்ல, அமிரின் ஆட்களும், பங்களாதேஷ் இராணுவமும் டாக்காவை முழுவதும் மூடித் தங்கள் கட்டுப்பாட்டிற்குள் கொண்டு வருகின்றனர். இந்தக் குழப்பங்களை எல்லாம் மீறி, ஓவியைப் பத்திரமாக இந்தியா கொண்டு வந்து டைலர் சேர்க்கிறானா என்பதுதான் படத்தின் கதை.

மார்வல் படங்களுக்கு ஸ்டன்ட் டைரக்டராகப் பணியாற்றிய சாம் ஹார்க்ரேவ் இயக்கியுள்ள முதல் படம். தோர் ஆக நடித்த க்றிஸ் ஹெம்ஸ்வொர்த், டைலர் ரேக்-காக நடித்துள்ளார். எத்தனை பேர் வந்தாலும் கொன்று தீர்க்கும் அசகாய சூரன் பாத்திரத்திகுக் கச்சிதமாகப் பொருந்துகிறார். எனினும் பரபரவென ஓடிக் கொண்டேயிருக்கும் ஆக்ஷன் காட்சிகள், வீடியோ கேம் பார்க்கின்றோமோ என்ற பிரமையை ஏற்படுத்துவதுதான் படத்தின் மிகப் பெரிய மைனஸ்.

படம் நிதானமாகத் தொடங்கி, ஓர் ஆக்ஷன் படமாக அழகாய் மாறினாலும், ஓட்டுநரின் கட்டுப்பாட்டை இழந்த வாகனம் போல் திரைக்கதை தள்ளாடுகிறது. டாக்காவை விட்டு பத்திரமாக வெளியில் போக ஒரு திட்டவட்டமான பிளான் எதுவும் நாயகனிடம் இல்லை. அவனது ஒரே நம்பிக்கை, எத்தனை பேர் வந்தாலும் சுட்டுத் தள்ளும் மூர்க்கம்மட்டுமே! ஒரே ஆறுதல், ஆயுதங்களுடன் ஓடி வரும் சிறுவர்களைக் கொல்லாமல் தூக்கி மட்டும் வீசுகிறார். அதே ஈர மனதுடைய நாயகன், ஓவியின் கையில் துப்பாக்கியைப் பார்க்கும் பொழுது பதறாமல் தியாகி போன்று ரியாக்ஷன் தருவது கொடுமை.

குண்டு மழையில் இருந்து தப்பித்துச் சுட்டுக் கொண்டே இருப்பது போதுமானதென நினைத்து விட்டார் போலும் ஸ்டன்ட் இயக்குநரான சாம் ஹார்க்ரேவ். க்றிஸ் ஹெம்ஸ்வொர்த்க்கு, ஓவி மீது ஏற்படும் எமோஷனல் பாண்டிங் சரியாகக் கனெக்ட் ஆகவே இல்லை. அவரது மகனின் கால்கள் அடிக்கடி நினைவுக்கு வரும் கிளிஷே காட்சிகளும் நாயகனின் வலி மிகு மனதைப் பார்வையாளர்களுக்குக் கடத்தவில்லை.

இந்தப் படத்தின் ஸ்வீட் சர்ப்ரைஸ் சஜுவாக வரும் ரந்தீப் ஹூடாதான். அவருக்கும், ஹெம்ஸ்வொர்த்க்குமான சண்டையை மிகவும் பிரயத்தனப்பட்டு, பல ரிஹர்சல்கள் செய்து, பிசியான சாலைகளில் எடுத்தோம் என இயக்குநர் பெருமையாகக் கூறினார். படத்தின் கலவையான கேஸ்ட்டிங்கும் (casting) ஈர்ப்பாக உள்ளன. அந்த ஆஸ்திரேலியக் கூலிப்படையின் தலைவி நிக் கான்-ஆக ஈரானில் பிறந்த ஃப்ரென்ச் நடிகை ஃபரஹானியும், ஓவி மஹாஜனாக ருத்ராக்ஷ் ஜெய்ஸ்வாலும் நடித்துள்ளார். இதில் சற்றும் ஒட்டாதவர் எனப் பார்த்தால், அமிராக வரும் ப்ரியான்ஷு பையனுலி தான். அந்தப் பாத்திரத்திற்கு பங்களாதேஷ் நடிகர் யாரையாவது போட்டிருந்திருக்கலாம்.

வில்லனை உயிருடன் விட்டால் ஆடியன்ஸ் நிறைவாக உணரமாட்டார்கள் என அதையும் அவசர கதியில் சுபமாக முடித்துள்ளனர். எதிர்பார்த்த பணம் வரவில்லையென ஏற்கெனவே கடுப்பில் இருக்கும் கூலிப்படை, ஏன் தேடிப் போய் வில்லனைக் கொல்கிறார்கள் என்பது ரூஸோ பிரதர்ஸ்க்கே வெளிச்சம்.

ஓடிடி திரை அலசல் |  Extraction 2: ஆக்‌ஷன் ரசிகர்களுக்கான திரை விருந்து 

க்றிஸ் ஹெம்ஸ்வொர்த் நடிப்பில் நெட்ஃப்ளிக்ஸில் கரோனா காலகட்டத்தில் வெளியாகி பெரும் வரவேற்பை பெற்ற ‘எக்ஸ்ட்ராக்‌ஷன்’ படத்தின் இரண்டாம் பாகம் தற்போது வெளியாகியுள்ளது.

முதல் பாகத்தின் இறுதியில் பங்களாதேஷில் வில்லன் ஆட்களால் சுடப்பட்டு ரத்தவெள்ளத்தில் தப்பிக்கும் நாயகன் டைலர் (க்றிஸ் ஹெம்ஸ்வொர்த்) தன் சகாக்களால் மீட்கப்பட்டு, ஆஸ்திரியாவில் ஆள் அரவமற்ற ஒரு இடத்தில் ஒரு தனி வீட்டில் தங்கவைக்கப்படுகிறார். எந்தவித ரகசிய மிஷனிலும் ஈடுபடாமல் அமைதியான வாழ்க்கை வாழ்ந்துவரும் நாயகனுக்கு, அவரது முன்னாள் மனைவி மூலமாக புதிய மிஷன் ஒன்று வருகிறது. நாயகனின் முன்னாள் மனைவியின் தங்கையை அவரது கணவர் ஜார்ஜியாவில் உள்ள ஒரு சிறையில் அடைத்து வைத்திருப்பதாக நாயகனுக்கு தகவல் கிடைக்கிறது. முன்னாள் மனைவியின் தங்கையையும், அவரது குழந்தையையும் மீட்பதற்காக, தன் சகாக்களின் எதிர்ப்பையும் மீறி ஜார்ஜியா கிளம்பிச் செல்லும் அவர் தனது நோக்கத்தில் வெற்றிபெற்றாரா? என்பதே ‘எக்ஸ்ட்ராக்‌ஷன் 2’ படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை.

கதையைப் பற்றியெல்லாம் கவலை இல்லை, எங்களுக்கு ரத்தம் தெறிக்க தெறிக்க ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகள் படம் முழுக்க நிறைந்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்பவர்களுக்காகவே வெளியான படம் ‘எக்ஸ்ட்ராக்‌ஷன்’. படம் தொடங்கியது முதல் இறுதிவரை சேஸிங், துப்பாக்கிச் சண்டை, கத்திக் குத்து என ரத்தக் களறியாக செல்லும். அதே ஃபார்முலாவில் இம்மிபிசகாமல் வெளியாகியிருக்கிறது ‘எக்ஸ்ட்ராக்‌ஷன் 2’. முதல் பாகத்தைப் போலவே இதிலும் சிக்கலில் இருக்கும் குழந்தைகளை மீட்கும் சாதாரண கதைதான். ஆனால் படம் முழுக்க வரும் ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகள்தான் கதையை முன்னோக்கிக் கொண்டு செல்கின்றன. திரைக்கதையில் ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகள் இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் வெறும் ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகளுக்காகவே திரைக்கதை எழுதினால் அதுதான் ‘எக்ஸ்ட்ராக்‌ஷன் 2’.

முதல் பாகத்தில் பங்களாதேஷில் நடக்கும் சண்டைக் காட்சி ஒரே ஷாட் ஆக 12 நிமிடம் தொடர்ச்சியாக நடக்கும் வகையில் எடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும். ஆனால் இப்படத்தில் அதை தூக்கி சாப்பிடும் வகையில் ஜார்ஜியா சிறையில் இருந்து தப்பிக்கும் காட்சி 20 நிமிடம் எடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. சிங்கிள் ஷாட் காட்சியமைப்பில் இயக்குநர் சாம் ஹார்க்ரேவ் அசுரப் பாய்ச்சல் நிகழ்த்தியிருக்கிறார் என்றே சொல்லவேண்டும். அதன் பிறகு வரும் காட்சிகள் அனைத்தும் படத்தை ஜெட் வேகத்தில் கொண்டு செல்கின்றன.

ஆனால் முதல் பாகத்தை விட ஒரு படிமேலாக ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகள் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதற்காக வைக்கப்பட்ட காட்சிகள் ஒருகட்டத்தில் சலிப்பை ஏற்படுத்துவதை தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை. படம் முழுக்க குண்டு மழை பொழிந்து கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. பிஸ்டல், ஸ்னைப்பர், ரைஃபிள் என மாறி மாறி யாராவது சுட்டுக் கொண்டே இருக்கிறார்கள். படத்தை எந்த இடத்தில் ஸ்கிப் செய்து பார்த்தாலும் அந்த காட்சியில் ஒருவர் துப்பாக்கியால் சுட்டுக் கொண்டுதான் இருப்பார். அந்த அளவுக்கு படம் முழுக்க டமால் டுமீல் சத்தம்.

முந்தைய பாகத்தில் அங்கொன்றும் இங்கொன்றுமாக சொல்லப்பட்ட டைலரின் பின்னணி, இதில் விரிவாக சொல்லப்படுகிறது. ஆனால் அந்த காட்சிகள் அழுத்தமாக பதிவு செய்யப்படாததால் பார்க்கும் நமக்கு அவை எந்தவொரு தாக்கத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை. ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகளில் செலுத்திய கவனத்தை கொஞ்சம் எமோஷனல் காட்சிகளிலும் செலுத்தியிருக்கலாம்.

எத்தனை முறை சுட்டாலும் சாகாத நாயகன், குண்டு தீராத துப்பாக்கிகள், போலீஸே இல்லாத நகரங்கள் என படம் முழுக்க அப்பட்டமான லாஜிக் மீறல்கள் இருந்தாலும், படம் முடியும்வரை அவை எதுவும் நமக்கு தோன்றாமல் பார்த்துக் கொண்டதுதான் இயக்குநரின் வெற்றி. ஒரு ஆள் நூறுபேரை அடிப்பதை தமிழ் சினிமாவிலேயே காலம் காலமாக நாம் பார்த்திருந்தாலும், க்றிஸ் ஹெம்ஸ்வொர்த்தின் ஆஜானுபாகுவான தோற்றமும், ஸ்டண்ட் கலைஞர்களின் உழைப்பும் அந்த காட்சிகளுக்கான நம்பகத்தன்மையை கூட்டுகிறது.

முன்பே குறிப்பிட்டதுபோல கதை, லாஜிக், சென்டிமெண்ட் எல்லாம் தேவையில்லை, ரத்தம் தெறிக்க தெறிக்க தரமான ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகள் இருந்தால் போதும் என்று சொல்பவர்கள் தாராளமாக பார்க்கலாம். படத்தின் இறுதியில் மூன்றாம் பாகத்துக்கான ஒரு குறிப்பும் உள்ளது. அதைப் பார்க்கும்போது ‘வின்னர்’ படத்தில் வரும் ஒரு வசனம்தான் ஞாபகம் வருகிறது. “இன்னும் எத்தனை தலை உருளப் போகுதோ தெரியலியே”

Dwayne Johnson has just signed on to star in the action thriller Ciudad — based on the eponymous graphic novel from Joe & Anthony Russo, comic book writer Ande Parks, and illustrator Fernando Leon Gonzalez — about a weary mercenary hired by a Brazilian drug lord to rescue his daughter from one of the world's most dangerous and corrupt cities: Ciudad del Este, Paraguay. Eight years later though, Chris Hemsworth has taken over from Johnson in the lead. Ciudad is now called Extraction — which has also moved from theatres to Netflix in the interim — and it now involves an Indian drug lord who wants his son back from another dangerous and corrupt city: Dhaka, Bangladesh.

That transformation is paralleled in the life of the Extraction makers. In 2012, the Russo brothers didn't have a single Marvel movie under their belt. Now, they have directed four, including the two biggest of all-time in the mega team-ups Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War . Back then, Hemsworth had done Thor but he was yet to appear in his breakthrough, The Avengers. Extraction — on which Hemsworth makes his debut as producer alongside the Russo brothers — is clearly a much easier sell now. Even debutante director Sam Hargrave is a Marvel alum, having worked as a stunt coordinator on multiple entries. And that should tell you what to expect from the new movie.

Extraction delivers plenty of action. Hemsworth gets into a knife fight with Randeep Hooda. He beats gun-toting Bangladeshi to a pulp with his bare hands. And oh, there is a 12-minute long take — well, sort of, more on that later — that finds Hemsworth driving crazily through the streets of Ahmedabad (which stood in for Dhaka), and playing hide-and-seek with the police through apartment complexes on foot, while trying to keep the kid alive. But what Extraction doesn't have is Bangladeshi actors in any capacity. In fact, most Indian stars, who play both Indians and Bangladeshi, are also just dressing for the movie. It severely underuses everyone except Hemsworth, and that's a shame.

The Netflix film opens with a half-dead Hemsworth in Dhaka, before jumping back two days to introduce Ovi Mahajan Jr. (newcomer Rudhraksh Jaiswal), the high schooler rich kid of imprisoned drug lord Ovi Mahajan Sr. (Pankaj Tripathi, from Mirzapur ) — someone should've told writer Joe Russo that this naming convention isn't a thing in India — who is kidnapped by rival drug lord Amir Asif (Priyanshu Painyuli, from Bhavesh Joshi Superhero). Amir is described as Dhaka's own Pablo Escobar at one point, to paint an easy picture. But Extraction never bothers to answer why Ovi Jr. is kidnapped. It can't be ransom since Ovi Sr.'s assets have been seized. What is it? Who knows, because the two drug lords never have a single conversation in Extraction.

Anyway, it falls to the Mahajan family's right-hand man, army special forces vet Saju Rav (Hooda, from Highway) to rescue Ovi Jr., after he is threatened by his employer that he won't get to see his own son's next birthday. Saju hatches a plan that brings in grieving mercenary-for-hire Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) all the way from Australia — can someone give us the timeline of this two-day movie? — who has been drowning himself in liquor and painkillers when not on the clock. He quickly signs on, confirming that he has a death-wish, though he claims to need the money. In Dhaka, Tyler secures the kid in 10 minutes, which is enough to realise that is not going to be a straightforward mission.

That's where the action properly begins. With Amir virtually commanding all of Dhaka's police, Tyler and Ovi Jr. attempt to evade their clutches. The start of the resulting chase — through forests, roads, and indoors — is depicted with a series of long takes digitally stitched to look like one 12-minute sequence. Technically, it's very impressive, given the destruction and variety on display. It's also high on thrills, with the shaky cam contributing to that feel. And with the camera stuck close to Hemsworth, it's clear that the actor is performing most of his own stunts. But at times, it also feels like a video game for how characters interact with their surroundings, only seeing what's in the frame, or how other characters appear out of nowhere, as and when convenient.

Extraction bridges the many action scenes with quiet moments that not only let the film breathe, but also make room for much needed character development and relationships. It's hard to care for what's happening on screen if you don't feel for the people on screen. Nearly everything on the Netflix film is about fathers and sons, be it with Tyler, Saju, or the two Ovis. But it's nothing special. And women have little presence here. Golshifteh Farahani (About Elly) is the most high-profile of the lot, but her talents are wasted on Extraction, as is the case with Painyuli, who orders people around and looks through binoculars, or Tripathi, whose role amounts to a cameo. At least David Harbour's presence — the Stranger Things star plays an old friend of Tyler's — is worth it just to see him nod his head to Hindi rap. Speaking of, several Bollywood songs play in the background.

But again, that's just window dressing for Extraction, which further speaks to the surface-level depth of the Netflix movie. Mar that with one-note characters — for those that have characteristics to begin with, as the others might as well be replaced with props — who survive thanks to plot armour, and it makes you wonder how (or if) Extraction would have been any different if it was still in its original form as Ciudad ? It's been through so much churn that the costumes for its nondescript band of Bangladeshi special forces look like the discards for a film set in America. There's no shortage of gunplay, grenades, and hand-to-hand combat on Extraction — but little else.

Extraction is out April 24 in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu on Netflix.

The film would make for a fun video game..

Editor's Note: Netflix India provided IGN India with press screener of Extraction 2 for this review. The movie will be available to stream on Netflix in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi languages from June 16, 2023, onwards.

Extraction 2, the most awaited sequels to one of the most successful Netflix films has finally released on the nearest Netflix-capable screen around you. This movie takes us on a new cinematic adventure that diverges from the dusty streets of Dhaka seen in the first film. The heavy-handed use of the yellow “Mexican Filter” aimed to create a gritty atmosphere in the first movie felt forced and annoying while missing the mark. In this sequel, the filmmakers embrace a bleak aesthetic set against the backdrop of the cold streets of Georgia. Extraction 2 successfully builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, delivering slick action sequences accompanied by a better storyline.

This time, we meet Tyler Rake, played by a brooding Chris Hemsworth, in a hospital bed in Dubai. He is recovering from a near-fatal injury sustained during his previous mission. Accompanying him is Nik Kahn (Golshifteh Farahani), who gives a much better performance in this film than she did in the first one. She is more believable as a tough, experienced mercenary, and she has better chemistry with Hemsworth.

The reluctant hero

We see Rake as a man burdened by the weight of his own mortality while grappling with the question of purpose. Just when it seems his days as a mercenary are long behind him, he changes his mind when he learns that the person who is sending him on a new job is his ex-wife, Mia. The message is delivered by Idris Elba’s character, who has a welcome cameo in the film.

The story goes something like this: Ketavan (Tinatin Dalakishvili), Mia’s sister, is entangled in a marriage with a crime lord in Georgia. Her husband, a former war refugee who left for Armenia, has returned to the country, and established a dominant drug empire worth billions of dollars. He is operating this empire along with his brother and uncle. Mirroring the first film, these crime lords command an overwhelming influence, exerting control over the entire nation. The film credits the United States of America as the only reason for the imprisonment of Ketavan's husband.

Extraction 2 is like a thrilling action video game

Extraction 2 amplifies the intensity which sees Rake engage in relentless battles, taking down enemies with guns, knives, grenades, and his tough hands. With a heightened level of gore this time around, the film will make you feel like you are watching a video game come to life.

It also features a remarkable twenty-one-minute single-shot sequence that encompasses a prison escape, a high-stakes gang battle, a thrilling car chase, and intense shootouts along with close-combat encounters aboard a train. The seamless cinematography in the film is engrossing and immersing. It almost creates an illusion of being a part of the events unfolding on the screen for watchers. Whether achieved through meticulous shooting or enhanced with visual effects, the sequence is captivating enough for me to say that the scene alone makes Extraction 2 a worthwhile watch. It is especially true for those who have enjoyed the first film.

A story overwhelmed by intense action

Extraction 2 delves deeper into the lives and backgrounds of its crime lords, offering a welcome expansion of the narrative. While I don’t believe the story is the focal point of the film, this exploration adds a valuable layer of depth. Additionally, like in the first film, Extraction 2 introduces a young boy named Sandro, the son of Ketavan. However, unlike the believable and emotionally charged dynamic between Rake and Ovi Mahajan, Sandro's character falls short in capturing the same level of authenticity. Nevertheless, the film strikes a balance, providing just enough story to support the action sequences, the centrepieces that are meant to be enjoyed.

Apart from this, Extraction 2 also hints at Tyler's inevitable return, suggesting that his journey is far from over. The film subtly hints at the Russo Brothers' plans to create a cinematic universe centred around the Extraction franchise, teasing the potential for future instalments and interconnected stories within this action-packed world.

The Verdict

Sam Hargrave’s seamless direction brings forth a film that has each scene skilfully crafted with masterful cinematography. With its well-executed choreography and commendable performances, Extraction 2 delivers exactly what is expected from an action film. If you enjoyed the first film, you can expect to be even more entertained by its sequel. Make sure to watch Extraction 2 on the biggest screen you have.

There is a sequence in the new Netflix Original film 'Extraction' where Chris Hemsworth's character 'Tyler' fights against cops inside a Dhaka building. At one point during the sequence, he and a kid go between two inhabited rooms where two different Hindi film songs are playing. It is an odd moment of distraction from the ludicrously over the top action in 'Extraction'. The film is set in Dhaka and it vies for authenticity but not much in it seems authentic.

It is overkill and not artistic enough to be taken seriously like Quentin Tarantino's 'Kill Bill'. It is not great to see bodies being ripped apart and even kids being smashed. It is a good thing 'Extraction' did not get a theatrical release. If it released on theaters, we would have been subject to 'alcohol is injurious' and 'smoking kills' warnings too (as if all the manslaughter hardly ever matters).

'Extraction' begins on a bridge in Dhaka, which is on lockdown. Our hero, Chris Harmsworth's 'Tyler' is a soldier with a troubled past. He seems so troubled that he casually jumps from a 30-meter height into a body of water in Australia. He dives very deep into the water and sits there in a meditative pose. That is about the only quiet moment he will have in the whole movie.

The 'Extraction' plot kicks in when Tyler is hired to rescue the son of an Indian drug lord, Pankaj Tripathi's Ovi Mahajan Sr., from the hands of his Dhaka counterpart. The project is far from easy warns his partner played by Golshifteh Farahani, and Tyler would quickly discover why it is the case.

The drug lord in Dhaka played by Priyanshu Painyuli controls even law enforcement there. He tells, and law enforcement people obey. That even results in Dhaka being forced into a state of lockdown. Frankly, this state is just an excuse to get Chris Hemsworth into the arse-kicking mode. Which brings us to the action in 'Extraction'. To give credits where due, first-time director Sam Hargrave extracts stunning pieces of action from his cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel. He also gets the best out of his star, Chris Hemsworth.

I like Hemsworth a lot and he is one of the best things about this Netflix action movie. There is some poignancy to his exchanges with the kid, Ovi Mahajan Jr. (Rudhraksh Jaiswal). At one point, the boy asks Hemsworth's character's name. It is 'Tyler' replies Hemsworth, and the boy says, 'You look like Brad'. The scene seems Hargrave's way of paying tribute to Brad Pitt's 'Tyler Durden' from David Fincher's 'Fight Club'. Speaking of Hemsworth looking like Brad - it is to his and the director's credit that the handsome and muscular 'Thor' star does not look out of place amid all those dilapidated Dhaka interiors.

Director Pa Ranjith is one filmmaker with a powerful voice in Tamil cinema. Whether one agrees or not, his voice is significant and cannot be ignored. When he announced his collaboration with actor Chiyaan Vikram in 2021, it excited many. And the excitement grew multifold over the years and became one of the most anticipated films of 2024. Did 'Thangalaan' manage to fulfil the expectations? Let's find out!

Thangalaan (Chiyaan Vikram), Gangamma (Parvathy Thiruvothu) and their five children live in North Arcot where they rely on agriculture. However, their land is grabbed by the upper-class landlord using deceitful tactics. In the 1800s, Lord Clement, a British General, expressed his desire to trace gold near their village. However, a local myth claims that the sorceress Aarathi (Malavika Mohanan), guards the area. Thangalaan and the rest of the villagers believe in the myth.

Director Pa Ranjith blends magical realism with themes of oppression, untouchability, and inequality. How do Thangalaan and his people fight for their rights and discover the true purpose of life? Is the myth about Aarathi true? These questions are explored over the course of two and a half hours.

Filmmaker Ranjith and his stories of oppression have a special place in history. They are evocative and raise the most important questions about one's rights. 'Thangalaan' is no different. Set in the Kolar Gold Fields, the film is about how common citizens are oppressed by the landlords initially and eventually by the Britishers. Along with the story of oppression, we get a fantasy element, headlined by Aarathi.

The plot of 'Thangalaan' seems interesting on paper. It follows the 'history repeats itself' template i.e. how ancestors fought for liberation and how Thangalaan continues to do so in his time. However, 'Thangalaan' seems to be the weakest work in director Pa Ranjith's filmography. The film's screenplay is too abstract, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. A lot relies on Thangalaan, the mythical story and his hallucinations about Aarathi.

The screenplay is slow and lacks engaging elevation sequences. Despite the brilliant performances from the lead cast, 'Thangalaan' is a disappointing watch. The tedious first half and the convoluted second half make the film a middling affair. Ranjith used sync sound, which is a major drawback, and it is hard to follow their dialect and understand their emotions.

The film's mythical story and political themes are muddled, affecting the overall impact. The visual effects are tacky and fall short given the film's large-scale production. However, composer GV Prakash Kumar’s music and background score do manage to elevate the film to an extent.

That said, there are some brilliant stretches in the film. Be it the first time when Chiyaan Vikram wears a pant-shirt or when the women in the village wear a blouse, these sequences are goosebumps-inducing. However, such moments are sporadic and not consistently present throughout the film.

Actors Chiyaan Vikram, Parvathy, Malavika Mohanan and Daniel Caltagirone do the heavy lifting with their brilliant performances. Vikram as Thangalaan is simply extraordinary, fully embodying his character. Parvathy's Gangamma is feisty, and she once again proves why she is one of the best performers we have. Malavika Mohanan and Daniel Caltagirone also give commendable performances.

Director Julian Farino ’s “The Union” follows Mike ( Mark Wahlberg ), a construction worker content with his job, dive bar outings with his friends, and sleeping with his former seventh-grade teacher (an awkward joke that remains a punchline over the course of the film’s entirety). When his adolescent flame, Roxanne ( Halle Berry ) returns to the east coast after decades of no contact, what he thinks is a meet cute down memory lane turns into an international intelligence operation. 

Hackers have accessed the personal information of all of the Western world’s government employees, from soldiers to cops and the FBI. Agent Roxanne and her cut-to-the-chase boss Tom (J.K. Simmons) are spearheading the mission to retrieve the hack to prevent it from getting in the wrong hands. Their titular organization, The Union, is a small, highly secretive agency within the government, akin to the operations of the CIA. They’re “an invisible army that keeps the world running,” an agency that looks for street-smart, blue collar individuals who fly under the radar. Kidnapping Mike from New Jersey to London, Roxanne enlists his help for this high-stakes assignment for one sole reason: “He’s a nobody.” It’s a flimsy premise that precedes an equally thin film.

There’s no driving force when it comes to the characters. We suspend disbelief that Mike would be remotely interested in this life-threatening operation for which he has no true technical skills solely out of nostalgic romance and maybe a hint of patriotic duty (the latter of which is not far off but assumed more for Wahlberg’s habitual social sentiments than anything in-script). On paper, the plot seems to be the sole consideration of the film, while character development and world-building this criminal underbelly falls to the wayside. 

Everything about “The Union” is painstakingly familiar. Wahlberg kicks back and lounges comfortably in his habitual role: a laid back, kinda cocky east coaster who juggles punchlines and machismo. Berry, who is fully capable of being a compelling action star, (most recently in the third installment of the John Wick franchise), attempts her best with the film’s shoddy script. “The Union” hits bullet points on its outline with an overwhelming sense of tired obligation and stunted creativity. Its leads have no chemistry and being that their will-they-won’t-they serves as the story’s main attempt at depth, the emotive capabilities of the film sputter and shut down. 

“The Union” delivers tonal whiplash on account of its failure to exceed at either end of its genre attempt at action-comedy. The action is mostly unremarkable, with a few key set pieces that pump the pace, but ultimately neglect to put anything exciting on display. Rebounds of exposition and non-committal world building fudge the film’s flow, making the 105-minute runtime feel like a fight to the finish. 

Its ham-fisted comedic attempts incite semi-indignant smirks and exasperated chuckles rather than genuine, inspired laughter. Most of the jokes hit with the punch of a half-deflated whoopee cushion, and the sneaking feeling that the script was written on the basis of cheap laughs creeps further up your back as the minutes tick on. “The Union” is unspecial and unengaging. It lacks charm and excitement, clutching to simplicity and a lazy script that relies on star power that’s not bright enough to save it.
