The good, bad and ugly of Pakistani sports in 2021

When it comes to sports, 2021 was an important year for pakistan.

By Shahjahan Khurram

The good, bad and ugly of Pakistani sports in 2021

When it comes to sports, 2021 was an important year for Pakistan. From cricket to the Olympics, Pakistani athletes delivered awe-inspiring performances and came rather close to winning big.

Despite the unknowns and the uncertainties during the coronavirus pandemic, there were moments of triumph, tears and a major comeback that will be remembered for a long time.

In no particular order, here some of the most memorable moments from the sports arena this year:

A cricket victory over India

Let’s talk about that cricket win over India. How can we not!

Pakistan began their T20 World Cup campaign in style, cruising to a 10-wicket victory over arch-rivals India. Left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Afridi put India on the backfoot by dismissing Indian players Rohit Sharma and Kannur Lokesh Rahul, in two successive overs, with deliveries, many argue, were unplayable to begin with.

Pakistan´s Mohammad Rizwan (R) celebrates after scoring a half-century (50 runs) as his team captain Babar Azam applauds during the ICC T20 World Cup cricket match between India and Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on October 24, 2021. — AFP

That day, Pakistan chased India's modest 152-run target without losing a single wicket, as openers Mohammad Rizwan and skipper Babar Azam smashed the Indian bowlers for boundaries left, right and centre.

As expected, the electrifying match brought the two countries closer. Indian skipper Kohli embraced Rizwan at the end of the match, a gesture that was widely appreciated by fans on both sides of the border.

Weightlifting at Tokyo Olympics — so close

Talha Talib is another athlete that stood out this year, gaining international fame overnight after almost bagging Pakistan's maiden weightlifting Olympic gold medal.

Competing in the 67kg men's weightlifting contest, Talib was on top of the race for a while before being surpassed by athletes from China, Colombia, and Italy in the final attempts.

Pakistan´s Talha Talib competes in the mens 67kg weightlifting competition during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at the Tokyo International Forum in Tokyo on July 25, 2021. — AFP

However, the entire nation saluted the young man’s grit for making it this far, competing at the international level after starting out from a makeshift gym in the courtyard of a school in Gujranwala, with little help from the state.

Talib's stellar performance at the Tokyo Olympics highlighted the plight of sports athletes in Pakistan and how they are neglected by the country's sports bodies.

Arshad Nadeem wins hearts with track-and-field performance

Before the Tokyo Olympics were over, another Pakistani star was born: track-and-field athlete Arshad Nadeem, who came close to winning a medal for Pakistan in the javelin throw competition.

With the entire nation watching, Nadeem competed in the javelin throw competition but, like Talha Talib before him, was unable to bag a medal for Pakistan. He finished fifth in the contest while India's Neeraj Chopra took home the gold.

Pakistan´s Arshad Nadeem competes in the mens javelin throw final during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on August 7, 2021. — AFP

Nadeem's performance had the same effect on the nation as Talib's had — it triggered calls for Pakistan to do more for its athletes and end the cycle of neglect.

New Zealand pulls out of tour

There were some rather frustrating moments for sports fans this year too.

On September 17, the New Zealand cricket team made an unprecedented move when it decided to cancel its tour of Pakistan, just minutes before the toss of the first ODI of the series was to take place in Rawalpindi.

Policemen stand guard outside the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi on September 17, 2021, after New Zealand postponed a series of one-day international (ODI) cricket matches against Pakistan over security concerns. — AFP

New Zealand cited security concerns, and despite reassurances from the highest level including Pakistan’s prime minister, the Black Caps were adamant on leaving the country.

The pullout infuriated Pakistan and sparked fears among fans.

The Shoaib Akhtar-Nauman Niaz spat

The Shoaib Akhtar-Nauman Niaz spat was one of the most talked-about controversies of the year.

An unwanted drama occurred during the PTV Sports show “Game on Hai” when former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar and cricket analyst Dr Nauman Niaz had a verbal show down on live television.

The spat had far-reaching consequences when Akhtar got up from the show midway, unclipped his microphone, and resigned on-air. Fans of the Rawalpindi Express lashed out at Niaz, calling on him to apologise for insulting a national star on TV.

An inquiry committee was formed, and based on its initial findings, PTV took both personalities off-air. Bitter statements from both sides followed for a couple of weeks before Niaz apologised during an interview.

A couple of weeks later, the two reconciled when Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry mediated and helped the pair resolve their issues.

Babar Azam dethrones Virat Kohli

It wouldn't be wrong to say that 2021 belonged to Pakistan captain Babar Azam. The all-format captain of the Men in Green struck a plethora of centuries and half-centuries throughout the year to cement his place as one of the best batters in the world today.

Babar's consistency enabled him to dethrone former Indian captain Virat Kohli from the number 1 spot in the Men's worldwide ODI batter's rankings.

Cricket - ICC Mens T20 World Cup 2021 - Super 12 - Group 2 - India v Pakistan - Dubai International Stadium, Dubai, United Arab Emirates - October 24, 2021 Indias Babar Azam reacts. — Reuters

If that wasn't enough, the Pakistani captain went on to claim the top spot for the Men's T20 batting rankings worldwide, dethroning Dawid Malan. After a poor showing against Bangladesh and the West Indies, Azam lost his number one spot again to Malan.

However, cricket analysts have praised Babar Azam's role as a captain in the squad. After an impressive T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE where Pakistan narrowly lost to Australia in the semi-final, Pakistan white-washed Bangladesh in the T20 and Test series.

The spirit of unity and peace that the Olympics promotes is what Jinnah wanted for Pakistan as well. This is elaborated on best by his declaration on 12th April 1948: “For sound minds we should have sound bodies and that is why nations over the world attach so much importance to bodybuilding and physical culture. The first Pakistan Olympic Games should act as an incentive to all Pakistan nationals to emulate the Olympic Motto ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’ i.e. ‘Faster, higher and stronger’. ></center></p><ul><li>November 8, 2023</li></ul><h2>The Importance of Developing Sports Culture in Pakistan</h2><p><center><img style=

Arshad Mahmood Awan

A sports culture is a society-wide appreciation and engagement with sports characterized by active participation, widespread support for sporting events, and a general belief in the positive impact of sports on individuals and communities. It is an environment where sports are not just a pastime but an integral part of the national identity, fostering unity, promoting healthy lifestyles, and inspiring personal growth.

Engaging in sports offers a multitude of benefits for individuals, making it crucial for every citizen to participate in some form of physical activity. Sports promote physical fitness, enhancing cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and endurance. They also contribute to mental well-being, reducing stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting self-esteem and cognitive function.

Beyond individual benefits, sports play a transformative role in shaping nations, fostering unity, promoting social cohesion, and instilling national pride. They provide a common platform for people from diverse backgrounds to connect, celebrate shared passions, and build a sense of national identity. Sports also inspire individuals to strive for excellence, set goals, overcome challenges, and develop a strong work ethic.

To cultivate a thriving sports culture in Pakistan, a comprehensive approach encompassing government initiatives, community engagement, and individual participation is essential:

Government Support and Infrastructure:  The government should allocate resources to develop sports infrastructure, including modern stadiums, training facilities, and public parks. It should also implement policies that promote sports education, coaching programs, and talent identification initiatives.

Community Engagement and Grassroots Development:  Encourage community participation in sports activities by organizing local tournaments, leagues, and sports festivals. Promote sports in schools and educational institutions, integrating physical education into the curriculum.

Media Coverage and Role Models:  Utilize media platforms to highlight sporting achievements, promote sports personalities as role models, and raise awareness about the benefits of sports participation.

Private Sector Involvement:  Encourage private sector investment in sports facilities, equipment, and sponsorships. Foster partnerships between sports organizations and businesses to expand opportunities for sports development.

Inclusive and Accessible Sports:  Ensure that sports are accessible to all citizens, regardless of gender, socioeconomic background, or physical abilities. Promote adaptive sports programs and inclusive sports facilities.

Promote Sports in Rural Areas:  Extend sports initiatives to rural communities, providing access to infrastructure, training, and competitions. Encourage traditional sports and indigenous games to preserve cultural heritage.

Celebrate Sporting Achievements:  Recognize and celebrate sporting achievements at all levels, from local tournaments to international competitions. Host national sporting events and promote Pakistan as a sporting destination.

By implementing these strategies, Pakistan can cultivate a vibrant sports culture that nurtures physical and mental well-being, fosters national unity, and inspires generations of athletes to achieve greatness. Sports can serve as a powerful tool for social transformation, driving progress and prosperity for the nation. Furthermore, it is also vital that schools and colleges in Pakistan develop a sports culture. It is also important that women are also encouraged to play sports. Sports are not only entertainment or healthy endeavours but rather now an industry where youth can develop their economic careers. Therefore, with sports culture, sports will become an industry vital for the socioeconomic uplift of a nation.

70 Years of Sports in Pakistan: Defying the Odds

essay pakistani sports personality

Imran Khan with the 1992 Cricket World Cup, Islahuddin Siddique with the 1978 Hockey World Cup, Jahangir Khan with his 1991 British Open Squash Championship trophy, Muhammad Yusuf with his 1994 IBSF World Snooker Championship Trophy

Sport in Pakistan has been marked by dismal institutional support, with a sports budget that is the lowest in South Asia. Pakistan has participated in Olympics since 1948 and has won a total of 10 medals: 8 of these came from field hockey; a bronze for wrestling in 1960 in Rome was won by Mohammed Bashir; and another bronze in middle weight boxing in the 1988 Olympics, Seoul was won by Hussain Shah. However, the startling fact is that Pakistan has not won a medal for 24 years.

Forgotten Heroes: Olympics Bronze Medalists, Hussain Shah Boxing 1988, Mohammed Bashir Wrestling 1960

Forgotten Heroes: Olympics Bronze Medalists, Hussain Shah Boxing 1988, Mohammed Bashir Wrestling 1960

Pakistan’s hopes for the Olympics used to be pinned on field hockey, from its first gold in Rome in 1960, right through to the 90s, when it continued to dominate the sport . It won the hockey World Cup four times and made it to the finals six times. The administrative skills of Air Marshall Nur Khan were instrumental in this success, as he did two stints as the President of Pakistan Hockey Federation, with a total of ten years. Such has been the decline of hockey in Pakistan that in the 2014 World Cup, Pakistan was not even able to send a team for the event.

70 Years of Sports in Pakistan: Pakistan team after winning the 1982 Hockey World Cup in Bombay

In the field of squash, the story is similar to that of hockey, but with the difference that members of an extended family from a small village called Nawakille, outside Peshawar (which didn’t even have a squash court), began to dominate the sport from the 50s to almost the end of the century. It began when Hashim Khan began his unchallenged domination of the sport, with his seven wins of the British Open (the equivalent of a world cup) in the 1950s. His relative Roshan Khan, and then his younger brother Azam Khan, followed with four wins of the British Open. After Mohibullah Khan’s victory in 1963, Jonah Barrington of Britain and Geoff Hunt of Australia became the champions, and the Khans of Nawakille lost their supremacy. After a hiatus of almost sixteen years, the Khans staged a comeback with Jahangir Khan’s win of the British Open in 1979. This began his reign as arguably the greatest player ever, accumulating 10 British Open titles and 6 World Opens. Jansher Khan followed with 8 World Opens and 6 British Opens. However, since Jansher lost the British Open in 1998, no Pakistani has made it to the top.

The undisputed Kings of Squash - Jansher Khan and Jahangir Khan

The undisputed Kings of Squash, Jansher Khan and Jahangir Khan

The popularity of cricket picked up as Pakistan’s performance in both hockey and squash declined rapidly after the 90s. Talented and mercurial, the team won accolades against all odds with wins of the 1992 World Cup and the 2007 ICC T20, to becoming the number one ranked test team in 2016, all the while defying logic and pundits expectations. At its recent outing to the ICC Champions Trophy in June this year, it was the lowest ranked team in the competition, coming into the global event with a string of humiliating defeats. However, Pakistan managed to win the tournament in a spectacular fashion by defeating arch rivals India in the finals. A famous epithet about the Pakistan cricket team is: “The only predictable thing about Pakistan is their unpredictability.”

70 Years of Sports in Pakistan: Pakistan surprised the sporting world by winning the ICC Champions Trophy this year

Pakistan surprised the sporting world by winning the ICC Champions Trophy this year

Other sports that have made their presence felt at the international level include snooker, polo, and tennis. More recently, our snooker players have been doing well in international competitions, and this sport has been gaining in popularity. Muhammed Asif became the World Amateur Snooker Champion in December 2012, Muhammed Yusuf had won it before him in 1994, and Saleh Mohammad had been the runner up in 2004. Polo, an elite game with a niche audience, has a respectable and consistent record. Hissam Hyder , with a handicap of 6+, is its most famous luminary currently. Aisam ul Haque is the only professional tennis player who has made his mark on the international arena. Though ranked amongst the top ten in the doubles, his highest ranking in the singles was 125 th . He has reached this level because of the support of his family, and the Pakistan Tennis Federation’s contribution in his rise has been next to nil.

Winners of World Amateur Snooker Championship - Muhammed Yusuf in 1994 and Muhammed Asif in 2012

Winners of World Amateur Snooker Championship, Muhammed Yusuf in 1994 and Muhammed Asif in 2012

There are multiple reasons for the steep decline of sport in Pakistan , foremost among them being the lack of institutional support from the government and their failure to improve the existing infrastructure. There are no state of the art squash academies through which we can produce international quality squash players. The squash legends that Pakistan produced were self-made and arose despite the unsupportive system. As far as hockey in concerned, Pakistan failed to keep pace with the rest of the world, since hockey rapidly evolved with the advent of astro turf surfaces and Pakistan failed to adapt to the new skill set required. Pakistan hockey has also been chronically cash strapped, as the focus of corporations and the government has been on cricket, and the Pakistan Hockey Federation have been unable to offer the facilities or incentives to players that an international team needs. With no serious attempt by the government to organize sports in schools and at the grass root level, handicapped by outdated equipment and training methods, and with coaches who are out of touch with the latest scientific techniques, Pakistani sportsmen stand little chance of success at the international level.

70 Years of Sports in Pakistan: Aisam ul Haq Qureshi in action at the US Open

Aisam ul Haq Qureshi in action at the US Open

Weighed down by corrupt and incompetent bureaucracies, the various sports boards are staffed on the basis of patronage. Their role as impediments rather than facilitators of sports is portrayed well in the film “Shah” about Syed Hussain Shah, who won the only medal for Pakistan in boxing at the Olympics in 1988. Symptomatic of what really ails sports in Pakistan , there were twice as many officials as athletes that went to the Rio Olympics in 2016, and these seven athletes were unable to get beyond the qualifying rounds. Nepal had the same number of athletes, but with almost one-sixth of the population.

70 Years of Pakistan Series

A message from ambassador nong rong on the occasion of the chinese new year.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, YOULIN can listen more to the voices of readers in China and Pakistan, better play its role as a bridge to promote more effectively people-to-people bond.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all the staff and readers of YOULIN a warm and prosper year in 2021.

Nong Rong Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of The People’s Republic of China to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan January 2021
