Here are 10 honest thoughts I had while watching Vijay Sethupathi's DSP. The film is directed by Ponram whose previous hit was Sivakarthikeyan's Varutha Padaatha Vaalibar Sangam

1.Let’s play a game. Tell me how many film names you can think of with this storyline.

There is a naïve hero who is from a humble family, and a goon who controls the locality where they reside. Our hero crosses paths with the villain, who hurts him, and then it's time for revenge. Meanwhile, sprinkle in some mother/father or sibling-related melodrama as per your requirement. And also add a whirlwind romance with our run-of-the-mill heroine.

Vijay Sethupathi’s DSP joins the long list of template commercial films that include Thalapthy Vijay’s Thirupaachi and Vishal’s Thimiru.

2.My friend and I spoke about DSP after watching it. We both felt it was a stereotypical revenge drama from the 90s. It was so stereotypical that my friend said it reminded her of the typical response—'Hmm'—that she gets from her crush every time she texts him. And I was like, "Wait what, you get a reply when you text your crush? I never get a response."

3. Vijay Sethupathi’s character is called 'Vasco da Gama' in the film. I know that’s not how our heroes are usually named. It sounds quirky, which increases your curiosity to know the significance behind it. How is his character connected to the Portuguese explorer that he is named after? If you thought you’d get the answer to it, you won't. Director Ponram behaves like our dad when we ask him for permission to go on a Goa trip with friends. You don’t know the reason till the end, but you get 'no' as an answer.

4.However, the villain in the film has a fair reason behind why he is called Muttai Ravi (which translates to 'Egg' Ravi). But it doesn't matter because the name is more hilarious than powerful or terrifying.

5.Vasco da Gama is an unemployed, happy-go-lucky guy who likes to play cricket and gets drunk with his friends. His dad has been struggling to help him land a government job for a while. At some point, after facing a crisis, Vasco is forced to leave his hometown. When he returns from exile, he appears as a Deputy Superintendent of Police. How? We never know.

Given that it is a ‘cop job’, I was struck by the fact that he is not shown to put himself through physical or emotional strain, nor is he required to study for any exams. I wish my life could change overnight like this without any hard work.

6.In an apparently power-packed action sequence, the villain and the hero take a break to sip hot tea and resume the fight. I was squeezing my eyes shut, unsure if it was real.

That unintentionally funny sequence reminded me of how my brother and I used to fight, take a break to have samosas, and start fighting again (okay, I admit, we do that even now). Anger and hunger are two emotions that switch more rapidly than you can imagine.

7.Do you remember how debate competitions in our schools made us speak both for and against a topic? But what if you have a skewed perspective on one side?

The film looked conflicted in how it presented police brutality. In one scene, it speaks about an important topic, 'encounter killings,' and how police officers are at times victims of politicians who use them as unofficial henchmen. However, it quickly frizzes out when custodial torture is presented as a humorous sequence.

8.Remember I spoke about how the film feels like it is from the 1990s? Because just for laughs, the characters call each other Loosu, Mental and Paithiyam , which are ableist terms. In addition, body shaming is packaged as comedy specifically when a potential groom meets our hero’s sister.

9.In a particular scene, a bunch of police officers are shown chilling in the police station during work, ogling at Samantha and grooving to ' Oo Antava' from Allu Arjun's Pushpa . The song's entire purpose was to criticize men's perversities and send a message that... Okay, never mind.

10.Let’s talk about the music in DSP . It was mediocre, like my dating life. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that the film's music is composed by national award winner D Imman. However, the silver lining is that the background score wasn't too bad. It was at least refreshing to see a song ' Nalla Iruma ' about wishing an ex-partner well rather than cursing them.

‘DSP’ Tamil movie review: Vijay Sethupathi’s action-comedy delivers no kicks or laughs

Instead of hair-rising moments, ponram’s cop film evokes the lethargy of a lazy sunday afternoon.

Every once in a while, comes a Tamil film that makes you apologise for judging it by its trailer, that surprises you by transcending its genre, that makes you wish it never got over, that you would like to rewatch multiple times, and one that makes you feel vindicated about missing breakfast to come to watch it. Ponram’s DSP , however, makes you want to take out your phone and read work emails. Here are three reasons why work emails are better than DSP :

• You don’t have to sit through them for close to three hours and wonder what was the point of this whole exercise.
• You aren’t subjected to spurts of blaring background music by D Imman that could cause mild headaches. 
• Well, you at least get paid to read them.

The film’s trailer didn’t promise us some experimental, hard-hitting police drama that sought to challenge the system. So, one was ready to overlook the problematic elements — like the depiction of custodial violence — that usually come added with a ‘massy’ Tamil cop film. Apart from suspending disbelief, these films expect us to suspend some sensitivity too.

But let’s not crib about the lack of political correctness here. One was just expecting DSP to be in the zone of Vijay Sethupathi’s earlier cop film Sethupathi , which was decently entertaining. Ponram, too, intends the film to be in that zone. The opening scene proves that. A thug, sitting in his lair, guffaws at the TV news, which informs that he’s been hiding from the police for a while. Looking at the bloody face of a badly bashed-up cop, he tells his minions, “I cannot be caught by someone who is merely made of flesh and bones. A guy needs to have fire coursing through his veins to catch me.” Just as he finishes uttering those lines, he hears a loud thud that cracks the wall of the fishing boat he is in. Outside, our moustachioed man, drenched in rain, stands with a sledgehammer in his hands.

We all know that the hero will bash up the bad guys. But it’s up to the filmmaker to show us novel and interesting ways of him doing it. Instead of hair-rising moments, the action sequences evoke the lethargy of a lazy Sunday afternoon. It doesn’t help that Sethupathi also seems to sleepwalk through these scenes. He doesn’t look agile enough to conquer the bad guys. Sethupathi’s stone face – stoic and impassive – works beautifully on many occasions. But sometimes, you get a feeling he stretches it too far. In this film, it just feels lazy. He lacks the charisma of a cop in an action movie.

The antagonist, too, is cliched. He is just a big, loud, power-hungry guy (with a ridiculous epithet, of course). This film’s bad guy is called ‘Mutta’ Ravi because he sells… (email your answers to this writer and stand a chance to win nothing).

Ponram takes half the film to even establish the conflict, which is weaker than the falling Indian rupee. In between, he fills us in with some supposedly cute romantic sequences with Anukreethy Vas, some supposedly funny sequences with Pugazh, and supposedly sentimental family sequences with Ilavarasu and the rest of the cast. None of these things makes you feel . You don’t care whether a character dies or lives.

There is an unexpected twist in the climactic battle between the hero and the villain, where they take… a tea break. It kind of snaps you out of the movie’s monotony. Apart from this, the only other noteworthy thing is the hero’s name: Vasco da Gama.

While the Portuguese voyager of the same name set sails for unexplored territories, with this Vasco da Gama, you head right into the land of cliches.

DSP Movie Review: Vijay Sethupathi, Prabhakar anchor Ponram's middling attempt to get back on track

When actors and directors with distinct styles collaborate, it is never a perfect balance of worlds. Depending on the stature of either party, the film tends to tilt slightly to one side. Even if director Ponram is in a slump of sorts, the filmmaker has a proven track record with his brand of comedy setpieces. On the other hand, Vijay Sethupathi has an eclectic style that hasn’t yet been perfected for his sojourns as a lead hero in proper masala films. Interestingly, these two worlds collide head on in DSP , and it is almost like both their sensibilities alternate in the narrative. If there is a Vijay Sethupathi-ism thrown in during an important fight, we also have a slapstick Ponram-ism making its way into the same sequence. This oscillation between these two worlds results in a few interesting asides in an otherwise template commercial film.

DSP Vascodagama (Vijay Sethupathi) takes on a dreaded Chennai gangster to facilitate a transfer to his home city of Dindigul. Why did he have to do this specific task to get a transfer? We don’t know. Firstly, why is the protagonist named Vascodagama? We don’t know. Also, why does he allow his friends to make fun of a small-built dark-skinned suitor for his sister when she has been rejected by a series of prospective grooms citing her appearance?? We don’t know. Why is a meet-cute between Vascodagama and Annapoorani (Anukreethy Vas) that is both funny and smart soon followed up with straight-up harassment in the name of wooing? We don’t know. There are many more dichotomies in the film that we might not have the answer for, but the film continues to chug along from one scene to another thanks to a strong hero, and an even stronger villain, Mutta Ravi (Prabhakar). The setting up of the conflict isn’t something we haven’t seen before. In fact, some of the pivotal plot points in the film were reminiscent of Vishal films like Sandakozhi or Thimiru. But an effective Vijay Sethupathi and a convincing Prabhakar do their best to drive home DSP to a safe end even if it stumbles and stutters along the way. 

The problems in DSP are definitely aplenty, and it starts right from the time Annapoorani is brought into the picture. Even if we first see her as an ambitious woman, she is soon relegated to playing the trope of a feisty village girl. Annapoorani also goes absent for long stretches of time, only to return for a hackneyed sequence with a special cameo. Did I laugh for certain portions in that stretch? Yes. Did it help the film at all? No. Unfortunately, there were more scenes in DSP that elicited similar responses. Entire comedy set-pieces involving a police station and their shenanigans could be construed to be funny, for sure, but they definitely belong to another film altogether. 

Glorification of trigger-happy cops notwithstanding, DSP also tries to be a commentary on how many police officers are arm-twisted by the powers that be to do their bidding. While the retaliation by DSP Vasco is anything but novel, brief spurts of ingenuity work in favour of the film. Be it during a chase sequence, or even an interrogation scene, there are certain crowd-pleasing moments injected into the film too keep the film engaging. Another facet that Ponram gets right is definitely the establishment of Vasco’s relationship dynamics. His equation with his father (Ilavarasu), friend (Linga), and friend’s father is beautifully staged. There are very poignant moments involving Vasco and these characters that balance out the cliches of the rest of the film. The same thing holds good with the antagonist’s story too, which is superficially very simple but has a layer or two to pique our interest. 

After a rather disappointing outing in his previous film, Ponram manages to get back on track with DSP . It is almost like Vijay Sethupathi’s Sethupathi-styled cop meets the humour levels of a Seema Raja. This might not seem a palatable medley, but it somehow manages to stay afloat as an almost entertaining, but definitely confused film stuck between a template and a good place.

Evol Review In Telugu: ఈ మధ్య తెలుగులోనూ బోల్డ్ కంటెంట్ సినిమాలు ఎక్కువగానే వస్తున్నాయి. అలాంటి వాటికి థియేటర్లలో రిలీజ్ చేసేందుకు అనుమతి లభించకపోవడంతో నేరుగా ఓటీటీలో డిజిటల్ స్ట్రీమింగ్ చేస్తున్నారు. అలా డైరెక్ట్ ఓటీటీ రిలీజ్‌కు వచ్చిన బోల్డ్ కంటెంట్ మూవీనే ఎవోల్.

ప్రభు (శివకుమార్ రామచంద్రవరపు)ను నిధి (జెన్నిఫర్ ఇమ్మాన్యూయెల్) పెళ్లి చేసుకుంటుంది. ప్రభు ఫ్రెండ్, బిజినెస్ పార్టనర్ రిషి (సూర్య శ్రీనివాస్)తో నిధి అక్రమసంబంధం పెట్టుకుంటుంది. అలాగే ప్రభు తన అసిస్టెంట్ ప్రశాంతి (దివ్య శర్మ)తో పెళ్లికి ముందు నుంచే ఎఫైర్ కొనసాగిస్తుంటాడు. ఓరోజు నైట్ తన ఎఫైర్ గురించి భార్య నిధికి చెప్పి డివోర్స్ అడుగుతాడు ప్రభు.

భర్త ప్రభు డివోర్స్ అడిగాడని, తాను కూడా తమ ఇల్లీగల రిలేషన్‌షిప్ గురించి చెప్పినట్లు రిషితో నిధి చెబుతుంది. దాంతో నిధిపై రిషి ఫైర్ అవుతాడు. రోడ్డు మీద వదిలేసి వెళ్లిపోతాడు. కట్ చేస్తే రిషి, ప్రభు ఇద్దరూ కలిసి తమ ఎఫైర్స్ గురించి మాట్లాడుకుంటూ డ్రింక్ చేస్తుంటారు. అక్కడికి ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చి కాసేపు ఫన్ చేద్దామని మాట్లాడిన నిధి వాళ్లిద్దరిని గన్‌తో షూట్ చేస్తుంది.

ప్రభు, రిషి ని నిధి గన్‌తో షూట్ చేసిన తర్వాత ఏమైంది? అసలు వాళ్లిద్దరిని నిధి ఎందుకు చంపాలనుకుంది? నిజంగా వాళ్లను మర్డర్ చేసిందా? ఈ ముగ్గురి గతం ఏంటీ? వీళ్ల మధ్య రిలేషన్‌షిప్ ఎలా ఏర్పడింది? ప్రభుతో ఎఫైర్ పెట్టుకున్న అసిస్టెంట్ ప్రశాంతి తన భర్తతో ఎందుకు విడిపోవాలని అనుకుంది? రిషి భార్య స్వాతి పాత్ర ఏంటీ? అనే విషయాలతో సాగిన అడల్ట్ కంటెంట్ మూవీనే ఎవోల్.

లవ్ (LOVE) అనే పదం ఇంగ్లీష్ లెటర్స్‌ను రివర్స్ చేసి చదివితే ఎవోల్ (EVOL) అని వస్తుంది. "ఏ లవ్ స్టోరీ ఇన్ రివర్స్" అనేది ఉపశీర్షిక. అందుకే టైటిల్‌ను అలా పెట్టారు. టైటిల్‌గా సినిమా కూడా రివర్స్‌గా సాగుతుంది. నిజానికి సినిమా మొత్తం కథ అరగంటలో అయిపోతుంది. కానీ, ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్, రిపీటెడ్ బోల్డ్ సీన్స్, ఫ్లాష్‌బ్యాక్, రిలేషన్స్ ఏర్పడటం వంటి సీన్లతో మరో అరగంటసేపు సాగదీశారు.

మొదటి అరగంట

భార్య నిధికి తన ఎఫైర్ గురించి ప్రభు చెప్పడంతో సినిమా ప్రారంభం అవుతుంది. భర్త డివోర్స్ ఇస్తాననడం గురించి ప్రభు ఫ్రెండ్ రిషితో తమ ఇల్లీగల్ రిలేషన్‌షిప్ గురించి చెప్పినట్లు చెప్పడంతో మరింత ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్‌గా స్టోరీ నడుస్తుంది. మొదటి అరగంట ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్‌ సాగిన తర్వాత చాలా వరకు బోర్ కొడుతుంది. అడల్ట్ కంటెంట్, గతం గురించి చెప్పే విషయాలు కొంతవరకు బాగానే ఉన్నా మరి సాగదీతలా అనిపిస్తుంది.

ఎఫైర్స్ తప్పా

ఒకేసారి ఒక్కరితో కాకుండా అంతకంటే ఎక్కువమందిని ప్రేమించడం తప్పా అని ప్రియుడితో నిధి అడుగుతుంది. ఇదే కాన్సెప్ట్‌తో సినిమా మొత్తం నడుస్తుంది. అయితే, ఈ మూవీ వుమెన్ ఎంపవర్‌మెంట్ కోసం తీసినట్లు, భార్యలను భర్తలు బాగా చూసుకోవాలి, వాళ్ల ఫ్రీడమ్ వాళ్లకు ఇవ్వాలి అనే ఇంటెన్షన్‌తో తెరకెక్కించినట్లు డైరెక్టర్ చెప్పారు. కానీ, మూవీ చూస్తే ఇదేనా వుమెన్ ఎంపర్‌మెంట్ అనిపిస్తుంది. సినిమాలో ఇల్లీగల్ ఎఫైర్స్ తప్పా ఇంకోటి కనిపించదు.

నాన్ లీనియర్ స్త్రీన్‌ప్లే

భార్యకు భర్త ఇచ్చిన ఫ్రీడమ్.. తను కూడా ఇంకో అమ్మాయితో ఎఫైర్ పెట్టుకోవడం కోసమే అన్నట్లుగా ఉంది కానీ, నిజంగా భార్యకు స్వాతంత్య్రం ఇచ్చినట్లుగా లేదు. సినిమాలో విపరీతమైన పచ్చి అడల్ట్ కంటెంట్‌తో నింపేశారు. అయితే అది చాలా రిపీటెడ్‌గా వస్తూనే ఉంటుంది. మూడేళ్ల క్రితం, రెండేళ్ల క్రితం, ప్రస్తుతం అంటూ నాన్ లీనియర్ స్త్రీన్‌ప్లేతో విసుగుతెప్పించారు. వాళ్లు ఎఫైర్ పెట్టుకోవడంలో కూడా కొత్తదనం ఏం చూపించలేదు.

ఊహించని క్లైమాక్స్ ట్విస్ట్

రొటీన్ స్టోరీకి ఇంటిమెట్ సీన్స్ యాడ్ చేసి తీశారు. ఇల్లీగల్ రిలేషన్‌షిప్‌లో సాటిస్‌ఫ్యాక్షన్, ఎంజాయ్‌మెంట్ గురించి వచ్చే కన్వర్జేషన్ ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్‌గానే ఉన్నా లవ్ అని చెప్పే ఎమోషన్ కన్విన్సింగ్‌గా లేదు. ఇక వీటన్నింటికి తోడు క్లైమాక్స్ ట్విస్ట్. ఈ ట్విస్ట్ కోసమా ఇదంతా చేసింది అనే డౌట్ వస్తుంది. అలాగే అది నిజమా.. ఏది నిజమా అనే మరో కన్‌ఫ్యూజన్ ఏర్పడుతుంది. అసలు ఏం చెప్పాలనుకున్నారో అర్థం కాలేదు.

అదిరిపోయిన కెమెరా వర్క్

అడల్ట్ సీన్స్‌ను ప్రధానంగా తీసుకుని దానికి క్రైమ్, సైకలాజీ, కాస్తా హారర్ ఎలిమెంట్స్‌ను టచ్ చేశారు. కానీ, కెమెరా వర్క్ మాత్రం చాలా బాగుంది. చాలా కొత్తగా సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ ఉంటుంది. చాలా వరకు కెమెరా చూపించిన యాంగిల్స్ కొత్త ఫీల్ ఇస్తాయి. మ్యూజిక్ కూడా చాలా బాగుంది. ఫ్రెష్ మూడ్‌లోకి తీసుకెళ్తుంది.

బాగున్న యాక్టింగ్, డబ్బింగ్
