Columbia writing academy: summer.

July 15–25, 2024 Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays | 7:00 p.m.–8:15 p.m. ET

Columbia Writing Academy: Writing the College Admissions Essay

As many colleges place less emphasis on standardized test scores, the admissions essay has taken a larger role in the application process. The Columbia Writing Academy is a two-week online course created and designed by Dr. Nancy Sommers to help students develop their own personal voice and style, and use those skills to craft a unique and impressive college admissions essay.

Students will explore each stage in the essay-writing process—brainstorming, drafting, revising—and will receive in-depth feedback from the teaching team throughout the process. Due to the importance of small-group workshops and 1:1 tutorials, this course is intended for students highly motivated to perfect their personal statement.

College Essay Bootcamp

Four students standing outside together facing the camera

Get a strong start on your college application with this series of sessions on the common app and supplemental essays. You’ll learn what makes a stellar essay and how to incorporate key traits that will capture an admissions committee’s attention and heart. Includes two 4.5-hour in-person sessions; two first-come, first-serve, remote sessions (Zoom calls) for individualized feedback; as well as independent writing time.

The College Essay Bootcamp focuses on the common app and supplemental essays, and not on admission to Stanford. Stanford does not have a preference for students who attend Stanford-specific summer programs and this opportunity is intended to provide general guidance around the college application process.

About College Essay Bootcamp

In-person session day 1 finding your voice and telling your story: common app main essay.

The main essay is one of the most important components of the college application. A stellar essay will help a student standout from amongst a pool of competitive applicants. Writing an outstanding essay, however, can be a daunting task. In this seminar, students will learn the answer to questions such as, what are colleges looking for? What do I write about? How creative should I be?

In-Person Session Day 2 Making Every Word Count: Supplemental Essays & Activity List

In addition to the main essay, many colleges require their own school-specific prompts, also known as supplemental essays. Covering popular prompts including the “Why Us?” question and the elaboration of an extracurricular or job-related experience, this seminar will teach students how to best approach various supplemental essays and further illuminate who they are as a person and how they can contribute to a specific college.

The activity list section of the college application provides an applicant the opportunity to describe their passions, skills, and talents. In this portion of the seminar, students will learn strategies to best highlight their accomplishments and activities. Additionally, students will be equipped with the tools to create a strong resume. Although not required by every school, a good resume can aid students with teacher recommendations, college interviews, scholarship applications, and future job or internship opportunities.

It was really enjoyable and extremely helpful overall especially as someone who is applying to colleges the coming school year and is behind on essays!

Some questions that students and parents ask frequently.

The pandemic shifted us from in-person classes to online Zoom, and we found that Zoom was both more convenient and more effective for our clients. We are building on our experience with Zoom over the past four years: we have Zoomed with almost 400 students since the start of the pandemic and are confident that this will continue to work well in the future. The success of your essay remains our promise and our priority.

Students come to Zoom class on Day 1 with nothing. We take you through introductions to this type of writing, some examples, and idea-generation exercises, and then you write and conference, conference and write.

During in-person classes (2013-2019), over 75% of our students left after one week with their Common App essay completed. The remaining 25% were able to email with us until the end of July with questions and revisions. For the summers (starting in 2020) on Zoom, the first-week completion rate rose to almost 85%. Conferences occur one-on-one in Zoom breakout rooms, mainly over shared online documents.

We still expect that a student who focuses on their essay can have a complete, edited document ready by the end of the four-day session. If it takes a little longer, we will of course continue to work with you, if necessary, over the next 1-2 weeks to make sure the essay is done to your satisfaction.

JumpStart’s teachers will work with you on a college essay of your choice –- the Common App is simply the most...well, common . Well-named, as it turns out! Schools that do not use the Common App often require a personal statement or offer another prompt that is very similar to one of the Common App prompts. We have had students complete non-Common App essays every year, including those for the (relatively new) Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success.

Morning sessions start at 9:00 a.m.; evening sessions start at 4:30 p.m. Expect approximately 90 minutes on instruction and topic-generation exercises on Day 1, followed by individual conferences with each student; expect approximately 60 minutes on instruction and strategy on Day 2, followed by individual conferences with each student; after that, one-on-one conferences will keep happening until the essay is done. This is an iterative process, for which we plan several loops of writing, feedback, editing/writing, feedback, editing/writing, etc. At 2.5 hours per day for four days, the session lasts a total of 10 hours.

SUMMER 2024: Scheduled sessions will be held in late June, early July, and early August. Students from all schools are welcome to attend!

  • Session 1: June 17 (Monday) - 20 (Thursday) evenings 4:30-7:00 p.m. for Zoom and conferencing ... FULL as of 5/3/23 -->
  • Session 2: June 24 (Monday) - June 27 (Thursday) mornings 9:00-11:30 a.m. for Zoom and conferencing
  • Session 3: June 24 (Monday) - June 27 (Thursday) evenings 4:30-7:00 p.m. for Zoom and conferencing
  • Session 4: July 8 (Monday) - July 11 (Thursday) mornings 9:00-11:30 a.m. for Zoom and conferencing
  • Session 5: July 29 (Monday) - August 1 (Thursday) mornings 9:00-11:30 a.m. for Zoom and conferencing
  • We're delighted that our 202x sessions are fully subscribed, but mainly we love being able to work with so many rising seniors on their personal essays!

Can't make one of our sessions? We'd still love to talk about options for working with you. Contact us for further information. We have done one-on-one essay tutoring every year; the schedule will be worked out to be mutually convenient to you and the JSML tutor. The price for one-on-one tutoring is $1000, to cover as many meetings as necessary for you to get to a complete Common App essay that satisfies you.

The student-teacher ratio is no greater than 4:1. At least two teachers (and maybe all of us) will be present in any session, to make sure that each student receives feedback from multiple readers.

Both! We open with group instruction for introduction, context, and idea-generation exercises, but even on Day 1 we meet one-on-one with each student. Day 2: some group instruction plus more one-on-one meetings. After that, it is all one-on-one until the essay is done.

The camp costs $600 for the session, including all instruction, conferencing, and editing. Inflation begone: our price for 2024 is the same as it was for 2023! (One-on-one tutoring does cost more, of course: the price for that, as noted above, is $1000.)

No, but of course you can. Many students do. We even prefer to do some of the early work with good old-fashioned paper and pen -– which we provide. Eventually, you’re going to want to word-process, but you can certainly type at home, print up a draft, and bring in the paper copy to conference over and add to.

Online, in the video-conferencing app Zoom. You don't have to download any software, but we'll reach out to you to check technical specifications. We'll email you an invitation link shortly before your session begins.

During one-to-one Zoom conferences we often also "meet" in shared documents -- whatever makes the most sense for that student at that point in that essay!

All rising seniors are welcome! We have taught students from Radnor HS, Haverford HS, Great Valley HS, Lower Merion HS, Harriton HS, Conestoga HS, Methacton HS, St. Joes’s Prep, the Baldwin School, Agnes Irwin School, Merion Mercy Academy, Malvern Prep, the Haverford School, the Shipley School, West Chester-Henderson, West Chester-Rustin HS, Downingtown West, Downingtown STEM, and several others. We have even had students Zooming in from Mexico, Germany, California, New Jersey, and Washington State! Bottom line: if you can get to us on Zoom, we will work with you!

"Best money I've spent in my life!"

[My daughter] had a great experience and we love her essay. It's so "her." Your course should be the model for intensive, innovative, "getting it done" writing. It really is the most productive application of education I've ever seen.

I tell everyone the money I spent for JumpStart was the best money I ever spent in my life, and that's including shoes! You were able to do what's elusive to so many editors: keep the writer's voice while polishing her work. .... My son will be in your classroom in two years!

"The best gift to rising seniors..."

You guys are the best gift to rising seniors! Having that essay done by September was a game-changer.

"The best thing about the course..."

The best thing about the course was the teachers themselves. Mr. Rosin and Mr. Wright are very good at developing an essay with a student rather than writing it for them.

"JSML camp is a gem in our community."

This program potentially saved a lot of fighting and anguish in the Fall in the Lee household. Now we don't have to nag our son about finishing his essay, just his college application. Because my son is a perfectionist, it would have taken him months to write an essay that is true to him. JSML camp is a gem in our community. I tell all my friends with HS students about it.

"All junior parents should consider!"

[My oldest son, Niko,] participated in the JSML essay camp with Mr. Wright and Mr. Rosin last summer. Niko, a reluctant writer, took pride and ownership while working on his essay. It was very encouraging to see him want to share his piece of writing with us. He continued to revisit his essay, add details and edit his piece. Mr. Wright and Mr. Rosin encouraged him to email them his ideas and corrections even after his session was over. Jack will be there this summer for sure! All junior parents should consider!

"I got my essay done!"

"They loved reading Will's essay..."

Thank you for running such a fabulous camp. Will was accepted ED to Trinity College and handwritten on the bottom of the letter was a note saying how much they loved reading his essay about his passion for the cinema. Thanks for taking the time to help these kids get on paper what they are feeling and trying to say!

"I've never been as proud of my work"

I honestly don't think anything [in the camp] needs improvement. Everything was perfect and I've never been as proud of my work [than] after I wrote that essay.

"[the class] was an individualized way to create our own college essays."

[The class] was an individualized way to create our own college essays. We did not have to rely on the entire group for much of the class. Having two teachers allowed me to ask questions twice and write a better essay based on their constructive criticism.

There's an amazing essay in you. Let it out!

One day, one essay. Done right. Guaranteed.

college essay writing camp

Dr. Pat Wilk is a writing coach who listens.

The college essay is more important than ever.

Because many schools  have kept the test-optional admission policy they adopted during the pandemic, the college essay carries more weight than it ever has. (Harvard's test-optional policy has been extended through the Class of 2030.)  Post affirmative action, the essay could explore your racial/cultural identity.

It's game time! Let's have some fun.

Good news dr. wilk can take you from absolutely no ideas to an essay you'll be proud of in just one day..

You can write your essay from home, or come to a live workshop.

You may think you've got nothing now, but you're wrong. You've got your life. There is an incredible essay in you, and it's our job to let it out. The process of getting there is easier than you'd expect, will certainly hold some surprises for you, and will leave you with some skills that can help you in college.

In fact, after your College Essay Boot Camp workshop, you'll never look at an essay the same way again.

Creative writing summer programs for high school students are a great way for students with an interest in writing to explore subjects they’re interested in, build skills for college, and meet other students who share their interests.

Summer writing programs for high schoolers are typically held between May and August each year . These programs are similar to a summer class or camp. Additionally, these programs last anywhere from a week to several weeks throughout the summer.

Like summer camps, writing programs for high schoolers are pretty intensive. Students spend their time l istening to lectures from experts, participating in workshops, presenting their work, and getting real-life feedback.

Best of all, summer writing programs are hands-on, so you’ll spend lots of time writing and creating original work ! The goal of any summer writing program is to help you develop and improve your writing skills through practice and feedback.

While some programs teach general writing skills, many summer writing programs focus on a particular field or genre, like journalism, essay writing, or creative writing . For instance, if you’re thinking about becoming a journalism major, you might participate in a journalism writing summer program that’ll give you a glimpse of what it’s like to work in the industry.

There are many benefits of summer writing programs when it comes to college applications too. After all, writing great college essays is an important part of getting into your dream school! And because they’re extracurricular activities, summer writing programs are also a good option for students who are aiming for an arts-based spike approach on college applications.

3 Tips To Impress Colleges With Your Summer Writing Program

Summer writing programs for high school students look great to college admissions teams . But what are the best ways to showcase your writing experience on your applications?

We’ll show you how to impress colleges with your summer writing program–just check out the tips below !

Tip 1: Work It Into Your College Essays

You want your college essays to tell a vivid story about your interests . Your experiences in a summer writing program provide a great springboard for illustrating your interests and passions on your college applications!

Colleges want to accept students who are creative, courageous, and motivated to pursue their dreams. Writing about how you stretched and grew during your summer writing program will show colleges that you’re up for a challenge…and that you won’t give up, no matter how many revisions your draft needs.

Tip 2: Connect It to Your Major

If you’re already certain you want to major in a writing-related field in college, your summer writing program will be especially helpful. Many elite schools ask students to apply directly to their chosen major. So if you’re applying to an arts or humanities major, there’s a good chance you’ll have to submit a writing sample as part of your college application .

The good news is that most summer writing programs give you the chance to produce original writing and receive critiques from professional writers. By taking the writing you produce during your summer writing program and continuing to revise it, you’ll have a top-notch writing sample to include with your application.

Tip 3: Ask a Program Instructor for a Recommendation

Creative writing summer programs for high school students give you the opportunity to connect with writing faculty at elite colleges and real-life writers, journalists, poets, and more. These professionals provide feedback on your writing during your summer program…which means they’ll have unique insights into your potential as a college student !

In fact, several summer writing programs offer students the chance to receive a college recommendation from program faculty . For instance, the New York Times Summer Academy says this about recommendations from program faculty:

As a pre-college program, [NYT] Summer Academy gives students the opportunity to get a glimpse of the college experience while also exploring possible topics of study. Typically, college admissions officers look favorably on students who continue to enhance their academic portfolio during the summer months. Students will also benefit from receiving a narrative evaluation from their instructor which can be included as part of their college applications.

If you build strong rapport with an instructor at your summer writing program, consider staying in touch and asking them to write you a letter of recommendation for your college applications. Having a recommendation from someone outside of your high school will show colleges that you’re already building real-world connections with people in your future career field .

UCLA Writing Project 2024 Summer Camps for Students

We at the UCLA Writing Project are excited to announce our 2024 summer programs for students entering grades 5-12 in fall 2024. This year we are pleased to offer two sessions for you to choose from, the first on campus, the second virtual.

Our promise:  We’ll continue to give students exquisite attention, and they’ll experience pleasure and joy as they find the best words to capture their thoughts.

college essay writing camp

Just what will happen during the workshop activities for students enrolled in Crafting The Story – Grades 5-6 , Literary Adventures – Grades 7-8 , and College-Ready Writing – Grades 9-12 ? Simply put, students will grow dramatically as writers. They’ll expand their stylistic repertoires, focus on a particular genre—but try out several others.  They’ll draft short and long pieces and gain confidence as they develop their individual style.  By the end of the workshop time, students will think of themselves as writers—a big deal!

And what about the entering twelfth graders in the College Personal Essay workshop ? They meet for just 12 hours over a four-day period. And that’s the perfect amount of time for zeroing in on the challenging and exciting task at hand: showing in what ways their hard work has translated to insightful understandings and how their experiences have built character.

What else should you know?

Our teachers are all UCLA Writing Project fellows.  This means that they participated in our Invitational Writing Project , a leadership institute that gathers wonderful teachers of writing PK-University—to share their expertise through demonstration workshops, to refine their own writer’s craft, to pay good attention to social justice issues in schools and communities.  They are teachers who love to write and to guide young students to grow as thinkers, readers and writers.

More still:

  • All classes will offer students appreciation, support, structure—and fun!
  • The day will combine whole group class time, small group sharing with peers, individual writing time.
  • Those classes scheduled to be virtual will have synchronous and asynchronous components.
  • All students will also have time to interact with their teacher one-on-one.
  • Students in the two-week workshops will craft an anthology of selected writing. They will also receive a certificate commending their participation.

We hope to see you this summer!

Writers In Paradise

WRITERS IN PARADISE

The conference.

January 18 – 25, 2025

Located on the beautiful waterfront campus of  Eckerd College  in St. Petersburg, Florida, this writers’ conference features professional writers at the top of their form spending quality time with motivated and talented participants seeking an intimate, unhurried climate for learning…in paradise.

2025 WORKSHOPS

Supernatural/suspense/horror with michael koryta (full week) $950.

This workshop is open to writers working on a suspense novel, particularly one with a supernatural or paranormal element — think Shirley Jackson, Ira Levin, Stephen King, Megan Abbott, and Joe Hill. Our focus will be on the handling of core issues such as character, structure, scene building, and how supernatural suspense is built through grounded stories with emotional realism.

Crime Fiction with Laura Lippman (full week)  $950

Looking for the formula for writing great crime fiction?  Alas, it doesn’t exist.  But this workshop can help writers with novels in which a crime is the engine that moves the story forward.  Counter-intuitively, the emphasis will be on character, not plotting.  Crime novels work best when characters are true to themselves. Then again, per Raymond Chandler, it never hurts to send a man through the door with a gun.

Memoir with Andre Dubus III (full week)  $950

If I teach nothing else in my writing classes, I teach this:  do not outline your novel or novella or short story or essay. Do not think out the plot, the narrative arc, the protagonist’s journey, whatever you want to call it. Instead, try to find the story through an honest excavation of the characters’ total experience of the situation in which they find themselves. Do that, and I promise the story will begin to write itself with little need for the controlling hand of the godly, intelligent, well-read, and ambitious author. But how, precisely, does one go about this “excavation”?  And how, technically speaking, can we ignite a story into “writing itself”?  Come to this workshop, and I will seek to demystify those writerly tools and skills that time and time again, if they are sharp enough, and if the writer can summon enough daily faith and nerve, can penetrate the mystery of story itself.

Nonfiction with Luis Alberto Urrea (full week)  $950

Paradise writing non-fiction.

A teacher I like calls our genre “Verity.” So, welcome to our Verity workshop. We will not only share our work, but we will also explore techniques that can make nonfiction as hypnotic as a juicy novel. Guess what:  the really good stuff is often hidden to readers. It’s a Jedi mind-trick.

In short—your writing is not only what is on the page, but also what lurks beneath the page – that shadow realm that can make your readers dream.

I’m going to show you the big river of story…even if your story is humble, closely observed. It doesn’t have to be a world-war. It can be about a grandmother’s hands. We will learn to love and trust what lies beneath. Expect great handouts, examples, and maybe some gifts.

Bring your best light. Bring your best shadow.

Don’t be shy. Do not fear.  We won’t let you fall.

Short Story with Stewart O’Nan (full week) $950

The class will be primarily a workshop. Students will read one another’s stories, interrogating character, action, language, ideas, and setting with an eye toward revision.

Novel with Ann Hood (full week) $950

“The page is still blank, but there is a miraculous feeling of the words being there, written in invisible ink and clamoring to become visible,” Nabokov said of writing a novel. That’s our goal in this workshop—to bring that miracle of words that tells a story to the page. We will discuss the architecture of novels, the best ways to begin, the muddle of the middle, rising tension, character development, situation versus story, making characters breathe on the page, where to end, and more. Through examples from published novels and close reads of your own work, we will investigate, explore, and celebrate writing your novel.

Graphic Novel with Alex Segura (full week) $950

This workshop will introduce interested writers to the nuts and bolts of the graphic novel medium, from pacing and script format to various genres within the form, an all-purpose tour of a beloved medium that touches on many aspects of the craft.   Artistic capability is not a prerequisite.  The focus will be on the story elements, the crafting of a high concept, and a loose breakdown of plot.  This is primarily a generative workshop, though applicants with experience in the genre will find much to gain.   (Submit either a completed short story; the first chapter of a novel, with a synopsis of the remainder; or a sample of work in the genre—25 pages, maximum.  Exact guidelines can be found on Submittable starting in August with the opening of our application period.)

3-Day Poetry Workshop with Didi Jackson (January 19-21)  $495

In our time together, we will hone down each workshopped poem to its essential strengths. What image, metaphor, simile, etc. … makes a lasting imprint on the mind’s eye? What part of the poem could be let go?  Where is the best place to begin or end? Is the poem missing something crucial?  Does the poem provide a moment of critical vulnerability? We will focus our attention on the avoidance of cliché and how to spy the extraordinary in the everyday. With support, kindness, and respect, we will all commit to help make each poem a better version of itself.

3-Day Poetry Workshop with Major Jackson (January 23-25)  $495

In this revision workshop, we will discuss poems and offer feedback with an eye on aesthetic risk-taking. Please arrive to the conference with three poems, preferably 1-2 pages (exact submission guidelines on Submittable starting in August). We will discuss strategies to push our drafts to next-level thinking and exploration. Students will enter a community of writers whose collective aim is to contemplate growth by way of radical experimentation.

3-Day Generative Short Story with Ana Menéndez (January 19-21)  $495

From anecdote to story in three days.

That image you can’t get out of your mind. That anecdote you’ve been telling for the last 10 years. That thing that happened in 2003 that changed everything – all these can be the beginning of a moving and well-crafted work of fiction. This fully generative workshop will take you from telling a personal anecdote to crafting a working draft for a short story. We’ll discuss the difference between anecdote and short story, learn the most basic of story structures, and discuss motif, binary constructions, and other details that will help you deepen subsequent drafts. You’ll leave the three days with at least a rough draft and some basic tools that will allow you to continue shaping the story long after you return home.

3-Day Mythic Structure with Les Standiford (January 23-25)  $495

This workshop will focus on the structure of book-length projects–novel, memoir, or general interest non-fiction, either completed or in progress. Discussion will be guided by the principles of mythic structure and archetype, and will center on the clarity and substance of a summary of the project and the efficacy of the 25 pages that open the work.  Recommended reading:  Christopher Vogler, THE WRITER’S JOURNEY .  Joseph Campbell, HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES .

MANUSCRIPT CONSULTATIONS with Sterling Watson ($450)

During our meeting, the participant and I will discuss the manuscript including my thoughts on what I think works and doesn’t work.  I will give the participant a brief report on the manuscript, which will be the basis for my spoken comments.  Additionally, I will provide the participant with a line-edited copy of the manuscript (participants may decline line-edits if they wish to).  Finally, we will address any questions that the participant prepares for the meeting.

by application only via  Submittable  from August 1 – November 1 novels in progress, up to 35pp plus synopsis one-hour consult may be combined with a 3-day workshop or stand-alone only may not be combined with a full week workshop due to scheduling conflict accepted manuscript consultees will be considered full participants and thus be eligible to attend all conference events (except workshops) meeting must take place during the conference week (Jan 18-25) participant will work directly with Sterling Watson to arrange meeting time and location

In Their Own Words

Without my mentors through the creative writing department, I wouldn’t be in graduate school studying for my MFA with the opportunities ahead of me to teach and write. With their support, I was able to study travel writing in Paris and London, which was instrumental in my growth as a writer and a person. The creative writing department at Eckerd College is a hidden gem—once you find it, you must hold onto it! —Olivia Jacobson ’22
