Who Is Blake Shelton?

Born in Ada, Oklahoma, in 1976, Blake Shelton moved to Nashville when he was 17 to become a country music songwriter, and by 2001, he was a star in his own right with the No. 1 hit "Austin." Success followed Shelton for the next several years, right onto the coaching/judging panel of TV's The Voice in 2011. A recipient of numerous awards, Shelton released his 11th studio album, Texoma Shore , in 2017.

Early Years

Blake Tollison Shelton was born in Ada, Oklahoma, on June 18, 1976. By the age of 16, Shelton toured the bar circuit, garnering statewide attention and winning the Denbo Diamond Award, the top award for young entertainers in Oklahoma. Two weeks after graduating from high school, in 1994, he moved to Nashville to launch a songwriting career.

Albums & Songs

'austin,' 'all over me,' 'ol' red'.

Once he hit Nashville, Shelton sold songs he had written to several musical publishing houses and landed a solo recording contract with Giant Records. His style was a traditional mix of blue-collar rock songs and country ballads, and he soon topped the country music charts with the song "Austin," which held the No. 1 spot for five weeks. In 2002 he hit the charts with his self-titled debut album — released by Warner Bros. once Giant Records dissolved — and the singles "All Over Me" and "Ol' Red" helped the album achieve gold status.

'The Dreamer,' 'Pure BS'

In February 2003, Shelton released The Dreamer , and its first single, "The Baby," reached No. 1 on the country music charts, hanging on for three weeks. The second and third singles from the album, "Heavy Liftin'" and "Playboys of the Southwestern World," each cracked the top 50, and The Dreamer went gold. In 2004 Blake Shelton began releasing a string of hit albums, beginning with Blake Shelton’s Barn & Grill . The second single from the album, "Some Beach," became his third No. 1 hit, and the singles "Goodbye Time" and "Nobody but Me" reached top 10, sending the album to gold status. Along with the album, Shelton released an accompanying video collection, Blake Shelton's Barn & Grill: A Video Collection . Pure BS was released in early 2007, and its first two singles, "Don't Make Me" and "The More I Drink," were both top 20 hits on the country charts. That same year, Shelton made his reality TV debut, appearing first as a judge on Nashville Star and then on Clash of the Choirs .

'Startin' Fires,' 'Loaded'

Shelton released the full-length album Startin’ Fires in 2009, followed by EPs Hillbilly Bone and All About Tonight in 2010. That same year, he released his first collection of greatest hits, Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton . He went on to win several awards at the 2010 Grand Ole Opry, including an Academy of Country Music award, a Country Music Association award, and a CMT Music award.

'Red River Blue' and Becoming a Judge on 'The Voice'

In 2011 Shelton became a judge on the TV singing competition The Voice and debuted his new album, Red River Blue , which became his first Billboard 200 No. 1 album, debuting in the top spot. The album also spawned three No. 1 singles, "Honey Bee," "God Gave Me You" and "Drink on It."

In 2012 Shelton signed on for season 3 of The Voice . He also released a holiday album, Cheers, It's Christmas , in October 2012.

'Based on a True Story'

That November, Shelton picked up two important CMA honors. The Country Music Association named him Male Vocalist of the Year and gave Based on a True Story... the award for Album of the Year.

'Bringing Back the Sunshine'

Shelton quickly followed up Based on a True Story... with Bringing Back the Sunshine (2014), which proved to be a hit with country music fans. The album, which features "Neon Light," reached the top of both the country and pop charts. He also picked up another CMA Award for Male Vocalist of the Year in 2014.

'If I'm Honest,' 'Texoma Shore,' 'God's Country'

Still swaying audiences with top-shelf music, Shelton delivered the well-received studio albums If I'm Honest (2016) and Texoma Shore (2017). In late 2019, he released Fully Loaded: God's Country , which featured the 2019 CMA Single of the Year, "God's Country."

Personal Life

Shelton married Kaynette Williams in 2003, but their union didn't last long. The pair divorced in 2006. In 2011 Shelton married longtime girlfriend and country music star Miranda Lambert . In 2012 Shelton and Miranda performed together at Super Bowl XLVI.

In July 2015, Shelton and Lambert announced they were getting divorced after four years of marriage. "This is not the future we envisioned," the couple said in a statement. "And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter."

Shelton soon rediscovered romance with fellow singer and The Voice judge Gwen Stefani .

In late 2017, the country star added a new award to his collection as People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive." Reflecting his sense of humor, as well as his good-natured rivalry with Levine on The Voice , he responded to the news with the quip, “I can’t wait to shove this up Adam’s a**."

Shelton and Stefani announced their engagement in October 2020.

Recent News

Blake Shelton (born June 18, 1976, Ada , Oklahoma , U.S.) is an American singer-songwriter and television personality who first garnered attention as a popular country musician and then found mainstream success as a coach on the TV series The Voice (2011– ).

Shelton was the son of a used-car dealer and the owner of a beauty salon. He began both performing and songwriting while he was still in high school . At one such performance, he caught the attention of established songwriter Mae Boren Axton, who gave him praise and encouragement. Two weeks after Shelton graduated from high school (1994), he relocated to Nashville , where Axton also lived. She got him a job painting houses and introduced him to people in the music industry. In 1997 Shelton came into contact with songwriter and producer Bobby Braddock, who helped Shelton land a recording contract with Giant Records. In 2001 Shelton recorded the song “ Austin,” a love ballad written as a series of answering-machine messages, and Giant released it to country stations. It quickly rose to number one on Billboard ’s country singles chart and to 18 on the Hot 100 listing. When Giant Records folded, Warner Brothers picked up Shelton’s contract and in July 2001 released his eponymous debut album; it became the number three country album.

Shelton’s second album, The Dreamer (2003), reached the number two spot on the country chart, and the song “The Baby” was the top country single. The more-assured Blake Shelton’s Barn & Grill (2004) contained the charming and humorous “Some Beach.” Pure BS (2007) spawned the hit country-rock songs “This Can’t Be Good” and “The More I Drink.” Startin’ Fires (2008) included the number one country single “She Wouldn’t Be Gone” as well as “Bare Skin Rug,” a duet sung and cowritten with Shelton’s then girlfriend, Miranda Lambert ; the couple married in 2011 and divorced in 2015. In 2010 Shelton released two EPs, Hillbilly Bone and All About Tonight . The rollicking title track of Hillbilly Bone , featuring Trace Adkins, was nominated for a Grammy Award for best country collaboration with vocals.

By 2011 Shelton’s pleasing baritone was a staple on country music radio stations, but he reached a wider audience when The Voice , a reality television show, debuted that fall, with Shelton as one of the four coaches. His next two albums, Red River Blue (2011) and Based on a True Story… (2013), were both nominated for a Grammy for best country album. The songs “Honey Bee” (2011) and “Mine Would Be You” (2013) also received Grammy nods. His popularity continued, with his next three releases— Bringing Back the Sunshine (2014), If I’m Honest (2016), and Texoma Shore (2017)—all topping the country albums chart. In May 2021 he released Body Language , which featured “Happy Anyway,” a duet with pop singer Gwen Stefani , a fellow coach on The Voice whom he began dating in 2015. Shortly after the album’s release, the couple married.

When Oklahoma native Blake Shelton made the decision to move to Nashville shortly after graduating from high school, little did he know that stardom would come to him fairly quickly and in a big way.

Shelton's very first single shot straight to the top of the charts on its way to becoming one of the most successful debut singles in country music history. With a slew of No. 1 singles and high-charting albums, rugged good looks, and wonderful self-deprecating humor, Shelton continues to dazzle with his uncanny ability to straddle the line between contemporary and traditional country.

Origins and Early Musical Successes

Born Blake Tollison Shelton on June 18, 1976, in Ada, Oklahoma, Shelton used to sing in his bedroom. His mother thought it was cute; when he was eight, she entered him in a talent show where he competed against 50 little girls. He didn’t care for the experience, mainly because he was embarrassed to be the only boy in the competition. His talent, however, was undeniable. Five years later he was singing in various country music shows around his hometown of Ada.

Two Fateful Meetings Cement Shelton’s Future

Shelton was seventeen when he met and performed for songwriter Mae Boren Axton, the lady responsible for co-writing Elvis Presley’s classic “Heartbreak Hotel.” Shelton performed at a tribute show honoring Axton, and she was so impressed with him that she recommended he move to Nashville. Just two weeks after graduating from high school in 1994, he packed his bags and his guitar and moved to Nashville.

It didn’t take long for Shelton to realize that he needed to make money while trying to open doors in Music City, so he turned to Mae Axton again. This time, she hired him to paint her house. Sheldon met Mae’s son, singer-songwriter-actor, Hoyt Axton, who was staying in a tour bus parked in his mother’s driveway. Hoyt would bring young Shelton onto his bus, play music and talk about the business, which further inspired Shelton to keep working toward his dream.

Shelton’s Debut Album Sizzles

Shelton eventually signed his first major recording contract with Giant Records in 1998. It took three years for his debut album and single to be released, but the delay proved worth the wait. At one point, he was going to release the song, “I Wanna Talk About Me,” as his debut single, but management decided it wasn't the right song, so it went to Toby Keith instead, who made it his seventh No. 1 hit.

Instead, Shelton’s first release was “Austin,” which also became his first No. 1 Billboard country hit. It also climbed into the top 20 on the Hot 100. “Austin” spent five weeks at No. 1, which tied Billy Ray Cyrus’ record for a debut single's stay at No. 1.

While “Austin” was climbing the charts, Shelton’s label Giant closed shop. His contract was transferred to Giant’s parent company, Warner Brothers Records. His self-titled debut album was released on July 31, 2001, peaking at No. 3 on its way to going gold. Two more singles followed, including “All Over Me” (No. 14), which he co-wrote with his musical idol, Earl Thomas Conley, and “Ol’ Red” (No. 14), which would become his signature song.

Sophomore Album The Dreamer

Shelton’s hot-streak continued in 2003 with the release of his second album, The Dreamer . The album’s first single, “The Baby,” shot to No. 1 where it stayed for three weeks. Two more singles were released, including “Heavy Liftin’” (No. 32) and “Playboys of the Southwestern World.” The Dreamer peaked at No. 2 and became Shelton's second consecutive gold album.

Shelton’s No. 1 Hit Parade Continues

Shelton put any flash-in-the-pan rumors to rest when his third album, 2004's Blake Shelton’s Bar & Grill , became his third straight album to climb into the top 3 on the country charts. The album’s first single, “When Somebody Knows You that Well,” stalled at No. 37, but its follow-up, “Some Beach,” spent four weeks at No. 1. Two more top 10 singles followed, including “Goodbye Time” (No. 10) and “Nobody but Me” (No. 4).

Shelton’s fourth studio album, Pure BS , was released in 2007, and it became his fourth straight album to yield a No. 1 hit. The album's first single, “Don’t Make Me,” climbed to No. 12, while the next single, “The More I Drink,” peaked at No. 19. The third single from Pure BS , “Home,” became his fourth No. 1 hit.

Shelton’s fifth studio album, Startin’ Fires , yielded his fifth No. 1 hit with “She Wouldn’t Be Gone,” which was followed by “I’ll Just Hold On” (No. 8). He released more albums, including his ninth studio album,  Bringing Back the Sunshine , in 2014.

His tenth studio album,  If I'm Honest , came out in May 2016 and included the single, "Came Here to Forget."

Those who aren't familiar with his music will probably know him anyway—he has been a star on "The Voice" television show since it began in 2010.

Blake Shelton Walk of Fame Honor

In the end, with Blake Shelton , it’s all about the voice … and without any need to punctuate that phrase with quote marks or italics or a capital T and V. The first and last reason he arrived on America’s doorstep was that baritone, which resonates with an authority that seems handed down from a different era of country music, no matter how contemporary the musical settings built up around it became. It perfectly fits serious songs from “The Baby” to “God’s Country,” but even when Shelton is singing a rowdy party anthem, there’s something in his tone that makes it feel like a grown-ass rowdy party anthem.

It was 2003, about seven years before he even made his debut on “The Voice.” I was on the phone with him to discuss the second No. 1 country single of his career, out of the almost 30 he’s had to date. The song in question, “The Baby,” was a classic country “story-song,” the kind he built his early career on, this one a legitimately weepy ballad involving a beloved mother who is dying, while the narrator, the (grown) baby of the family, tries to move heaven and earth to get home to see her before she passes. Having heard the solemnity of his delivery, I expected to encounter someone who was as serious as the song. “That song even makes me want to cry,” he told me, “and I’m one of the coldest people I know.” I still haven’t forgotten stifling a guffaw at the unexpected irreverence of that line. The guy I’d assumed was just another hat act (yes, he had an ever-present Stetson to go with the mullet back then), the singer who’d just jerked my tears, was going to jerk laughs, too. And to think it only took another seven years or so for the rest of the world to realize they couldn’t wait to see what popped out of his mouth.

“My first three hits were all story-songs,” he recalled to me years later, looking at the trajectory of his music career. Before there was “The Baby,” there was “Austin,” his first No. 1, an earnest, bittersweet song about a fellow who definitely leaves TMI on his ex’s answering machine, and then “Ol’ Red,” a rather more rambunctious tune about a jailbird whose knowledge of prison dogs aided in an escape. (That one stopped short at No. 14, mysteriously, although it remains one of the most enduring staples in his live show, popular enough to have later inspired the name for his five-story Nashville bar, Ole Red.) “When you only have three singles out and they’re all three story-songs, you definitely are that guy to people,” he says.

His fourth No. 1, though, “Some Beach” — pun intended — proved to be one of the funniest country hits of all time and paved the way for the persona that would bloom on television. There was still ground to cover to establish the breadth of a career, though. When I was talking with him in 2010 about “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking,” he exulted, “It’s the first true love song that I’ve had at radio in … maybe ever. But it works for me because it has a little bit of a sense of humor to it. It’s hard for me to find love songs that I would want to sing, because I never want to be cheesy or full of shit.” Not to worry — the swoon factor had arrived, and was here to stay.

He was part of perhaps the last generation that could grow up only listening to one genre. “I’m a guy who basically only listened to country music my entire life, outside of ‘Macarena’ or one of those songs that gets to be larger than life and you can’t help but hear it everywhere you go,” he admitted. “Being on ‘The Voice,’ I’ve been exposed to so many genres, so many sounds, so many things that I didn’t like that I’ve found out that I do like. It probably started with Adam’s music. I was getting to know this guy so I better know something about his music — and fell in love with his records. … I definitely think that hearing and performing some of these songs I’d never been exposed to obviously crept into what I do, too. Maybe that’s why we end up putting a wah-wah pedal on a banjo.” The country world has been the beneficiary of his expanded tastes, but also of the narrow focus he started off with that so clearly established him as the real deal.

Shelton has mixed — mostly happy — feelings about leaving “The Voice.” He recently told People magazine, “The holdup over the years has been that it’s a hard thing for me to let go of. I’ve been here literally since the first minute,” he says. “When I started on ‘The Voice,’ that was 10 years into my career as a country artist. I never really made it to the A-level of country artists until I became a coach. The show did a hell of a lot more for me than I brought to the table at the time.” No more annual calculations of how touring season fits between two TV seasons. “Gwen (Stefani, whom he wed in 2021) and I have done so much traveling and touring and work the first half of our lives that now we’re like, ‘Hey, I’m good to put my sweatpants on at 6 p.m. and watch ‘Ozark’ eight times.’”

He’s going to be a homebody in Oklahoma? OK. Still, he seems a little too ambitious to settle for just touring and recording (or “Barmegeddon,” the series he produces that admittedly takes up little of his time), and for getting in all that promised “Ozark” catching-up time. If Stefani notices him suddenly impulsively trying to swivel their couch around, she may know it’s time for him to head back to Hollywood.

Blake Shelton

Blake shelton quick links.

Blake Tollison Shelton (born 18.6.1976) Blake Shelton is an American, four times Grammy nominated Country singer acknowledged for his thirteen number one singles in the US country charts including: Sure Be Cool If You Did, Honey Bee and God Gave Me You.

Childhood: Shelton was born in Ada, Oklahoma to his beauty salon owner mother Dorothy and car dealership father Richard. Shelton showed an immediate interest in music and by 15 was writing his own songs which later won him a Denbo Diamond award in his home state. At 17, Shelton moved to Nashville in order to pursue his musical career.

Musical Career: It wasn't until 2001 that Shelton was signed to Giant Records (Deep Purple US/Canada, Kenny Rogers) who decided against releasing "I Wanna Talk About Me" as Blake's debut single (which was later recorded by Toby Keith and obtained number one on the US Country charts). Instead, Giant released "Austin", Shelton's first single which would later go on to spend five consecutive weeks at number one in the US Country Charts. Shortly after its release Giant Records was closed and Shelton was pursued by parenting company, Warner Bros. Records whom released his self-titled debut album containing the top 20 hit songs: All Over Me and Ol' Red which became his signature, live song, despite not being a major radio hit. The album received a positive response with Maria Konicki Dinoia of Allmusic stating it was "tremendously imaginative". The album received a gold certificate from the Recording Industry Association of America for shipments of 500,000 copies. Shelton's second studio album was released a year later. The album was titled 'The Dreamer' and included Number One Country Chart topper, "The Baby". Despite the album not having the same single success as Shelton's debut album it still achieved gold certification and lead to Shelton singing guest vocals on Tracy Byrd's "The Truth About Men". Shelton's third studio Album, 'Blake Shelton's Barn & Grill' was released in 2004 obtaining him his third US Country number one single with "Some Beach". The album also featured multiple top ten hits including: "Goodbye Time" (cover of Conway Twitty's 1988 single) and "Nobody But Me". The album achieved Gold Certification and multiple tracks were featured on the TV film, The Christmas Blessing. Shelton worked with Braddock, Brent Rowan and Paul Worley (previously only Braddock) in order to produce his fourth studio album, 'Pure BS' in early 2007. The album originally received no number one hit single however was later re-released in 2008 with three bonus tracks including two US Country number one's with a cover of Michael Bublé's hit single "Home" and original song "She Wouldn't Be Gone". "She Wouldn't Be Gone" went on to become the lead of to Shelton's fifth studio album, 'Startin' Fires'. The album was produced by Scott Hendricks and lead to the release of the US Country number 8 single "I'll Just Hold On". On March 2nd, 2010 Shelton released a duet with Trace Adkins titled "Hillbilly Bone" via record label 'Reprise Records Nashville'. Hillbilly Bone became number one and earned gold certification, which lead to the release of EP, 'All About Tonight'. Later that year Shelton released his first Greatest Hits, 'Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton which peaked at number four on the US Album Country Charts. Shelton attended the "Country Comes Home" concert to celebrate the re-opening of the 'Grand Ole Opry House' after it's flooding in 2010. Shelton also went on to recorde the opening track for the 2011 Footloose remake starring Kenny Wormald and Dennis Quaid. Shelton won Male Vocalist of the Year when he appeared on the 44th Annual Country Music Awards where he also performed "All About Tonight". Shelton continued his television appearances after being a judge on talent competition, Nashville Star and later on Clash of the Choirs before earning a permanent place starring as judge and coach on the NBC reality TV series, The Voice. Shelton released his 6th original studio album in 2011 titled, 'Red River Blue'. The album's opening single "Honey Bee" received 138,000 downloads in its first week and achieved gold certification by its 7th week, setting a new record for the fastest gold certification by a male country singer. Honey Bee also became Shelton's ninth number one in the US billboard Country Charts and helped Red River Blue to become Shelton's first album to receive a number one in US Billboard Top 200. The album also featured US County number one hits: "God Gave Me You" (Dave Barns cover) and "Drink On It". Blake performed "Over" on the second season of the Voice which resulted in his 7th consecutive number one (US Country Charts) and his 12th number one hit to date. Shelton released his first Christmas album, 'Cheers It's Christmas' featuring classic Christmas songs performed by famous and acclaimed country stars and himself. The album peaked at number two in the US Country Charts and number one in the US Holiday Charts. On New Year's Day 2013, Shelton premiered his new single "Sure Be Cool If You Did" which reached number one on the US Country Charts. His eighth studio album, 'Based On A True Story.' debuted at number three on the Billboard Top 200 selling just under 200,000 copies. The album went on to be number one in the US Country Charts.

Personal Life: Shelton's older brother Richie died at 24 in a car accident when Shelton was still young (14 years old). Blake wrote about Richie in Lambert's song "Over You" which was named CMA song of the year 2012 and won the Academy of Country Music Awards 2013 for song of the year Blake married long time girlfriend Kaynette Gern in 2003, however got divorced shortly after in 2006. Shelton proposed to fellow country singer Miranda Lambert in 2010 after receiving her father's blessing. They married a year later with many country stars and celebrities in attendance. Shelton's father died in 2012 at the age of 71 due to declining health.

Blake Shelton - New Kid In Town (From The Bible)

Country star Blake Shelton features his nativity song 'There's a New Kid in Town' from his 2012 album 'Cheers, It's Christmas' on the soundtrack to the epic History Channel miniseries 'The Bible' which tells of most important stories of the Old and New Testament.

The video is a clip taken from the series depicting the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable, including Mary's gruelling journey to Bethlehem on a donkey and the shepherds and wise men following the star and offering their gifts to the baby boy. The song is a slow and melodic country tune with infectious lyrics; it is also a far cry from some of the other soundtrack numbers such as Cee Lo Green's 'Mary Did You Know' which only serves as a positive thing for this diverse 10 hour series.

With direction from Crispin Reece ('I Shouldn't Be Alive'), Tony Mitchell ('Flood') and Christopher Spencer ('Stonehenge: Decoded'), 'The Bible' is the brainchild of producers Roma Downey (who also stars in the series) and Mark Burnett ('Survivor', 'Shark Tank'). The first episode of the show reached 13.1 million viewers giving it the largest cable television audience of 2013 so far; altogether it has reached 50 million, and the series hasn't even finished yet! There is even further excitement with a brand new New York exhibit displaying various ancient religious artefacts that usually rest in the Vatican as well as a gallery of the series' stunning photography. 'The Bible' will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on April 2nd 2013.

The Untold Truth Of Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton has been a fixture on country airwaves and TV for years now, so it's easy to feel like you know him: He's from Oklahoma, he likes to drink, he likes to make fun of Adam Levine , he was married to Miranda Lambert, and now he's with Gwen Stefani . But there's much more to the country crooner than what you see in just tabloid headlines and hear in his songs.

According to Biography , Shelton began his career at just 16 years old, "[touring] the bar circuit" before he could even drink legally. By 17, he'd moved to Nashville to try his hand at being a songwriter. He landed a deal with Giant Records and topped country charts with "Austin," later releasing his self-titled debut on Warner Bros. Records in 2002 after Giant Records folded.

From there, Shelton has become a household name, not just in the country arena, but also in mainstream pop culture. Whether it's his sometimes-too-straight talking nature, his love life, or his incredible chart success, get to know the man behind the down-home charm.

Did Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert have a sketchy start?

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert were one of country's cutest couples, but their foundation may have been a faulty one: Shelton was still married to his first wife Kaynette Gern when he met Lambert in 2005 when they performed " You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma " during CMT's "100 Greatest Duets" concert. The pair's chemistry was palpable. He later told Behind The Music (via Entertainment Weekly ), "I've never had that kind of experience with anybody. I was a married guy, you know? Standing up there and singing with somebody and going, 'Man, this shouldn't be happening.' Looking back on that, I was falling in love with her, right there on stage." Further complicating matters was that Lambert reportedly had a boyfriend at the time as well.

Whether it should or shouldn't have happened, it did. Shelton and Lambert shacked up and he divorced Gern, which he admitted to CBS News was an incredibly hard decision. "I was married," he said. "That was easily the toughest thing that I've, you know, been through. I put my divorce up there with my brother's death and that was a tough, tough call to make."

Shelton and Lambert split in 2015 , and he quickly moved on with Gwen Stefani , who was going through her own messy divorce from Gavin Rossdale at the time.

Religion is making things complicated for Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton

Following his split from Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton rebounded in a big way with Gwen Stefani, who he credits with helping him rediscover his faith when she encouraged him to go to church with her regularly. "I believe in God now more than I ever have in my life," he told USA Today . "The biggest part of that is just how [Stefani] came into my life and now our relationship. It's just too weird. If you take God out of it, it doesn't make sense. If you put God into it, everything that's happened with us makes sense." It should be noted that Shelton's spirituality has also boosted another part of his life: his bank account. The singer scored a massive hit with "God's Country," earning him his 26th No. 1 hit, not to mention a Grammy nomination.

In any event, Stefani's relationship with God may be complicating any potential wedding plans Shelton and Stefani may have. Both  People  and Us Weekly have reported that sources claim Shelton and Stefani are super serious about one another and that he's considered proposing for a long time, but the No Doubt singer's strict Catholicism won't let her and Shelton tie the knot until she's granted an annulment, which can take a mighty long time. It should be noted, however, that tabloid whistleblower Gossip Cop checked in on the claim and was told by Stefani's spokesperson that it's "untrue."

The Voice wasn't Blake Shelton's first TV rodeo

Blake Shelton

Long before Blake Shelton was a staple on The Voice , he tried his hand at coaching and judging two other reality singing competition shows that didn't pan out nearly as well as the NBC ratings juggernaut. In 2007, Shelton began his lucrative relationship with NBC when he served as a choir coach and recruiter on Clash Of The Choirs , where he scouted for talent in Oklahoma City, Okla., and, similarly to The Voice , performed with his team. The same year, he was also a judge on Nashville Star on the USA Network for the show's fifth season. (Incidentally, Miranda Lambert was a finalist on the first season of the show in 2003.)

When asked if he was worried he'd be more considered a television personality than a country artist given his career trajectory, Shelton was characteristically frank. "My job at The Voice is to represent country music. I take that very seriously," he told Rolling Stone . "So many hit songs have been launched from this show, and so many songs have been discovered. It's bringing music into 13 million people's living rooms. There's nothing but f**kin' awesomeness that comes out of that."

The truth behind Blake Shelton and Adam Levine's bromance

Blake Shelton, Adam Levine

Blake Shelton and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine bickered so much on The Voice that it wasn't always clear whether they actually loathed each other or whether they had such a strong bromance that they basically acted like an old married couple. Levine previously explained to Entertainment Tonight that when he and Shelton "tried to be nice to each other" for a season of the show, they basically couldn't function at all — and that the producers of The Voice were mortified to see their bickering cease, so they went right back to it.

The brotherly bond was made even more clear after Levine's shocking exit from the show in spring 2019. When Levine broke his silence on Instagram about leaving the series, he thanked none of his original fellow coaches except for Shelton, writing, "BLAKE F**KIN' SHELTON. I couldn't hide my love for you if I tried. Seriously. I tried. Can't do it," later adding, "You're my brother for life."

In September 2019, Shelton told Access Daily that he and Levine still talk frequently. He also jokingly lamented Levine's departure, saying, "It sucks not having Adam on the show. He's been there since the beginning, and it's hard not to have somebody that stupid to make fun of. ... Everybody here now, they're smarter, they're more talented, and he's not here to kick around."

The Voice made Blake Shelton very rich, but is he over it?

Blake Shelton promoting 'The Voice'

Blake Shelton is one of the highest-paid country stars on the planet thanks to reality TV. Forbes reported that Shelton made $32 million in 2019, largely due to a hefty pay day from The Voice ; he reportedly made $28 million in 2018. According to The Wrap , Shelton made $13 million for The Voice alone in 2016 — and Radar Online reported in January 2017 that Shelton and girlfriend Gwen Stefani each got bonuses for milking their offscreen romance on TV. (Go ahead and take that claim with the appropriate grain of salt.)

While the paycheck is nice, there have been reports that Shelton is getting tired of actually doing the show. Insiders told Radar Online that Shelton got salty when Miley Cyrus and especially Jennifer Hudson each temporarily replaced Stefani on the coaching panel, but his issues may have extended beyond missing his girlfriend. An insider also told Radar Online before Adam Levine quit that if Levine left, Shelton would follow. As of this writing, he hasn't, but the source also noted, "Blake has made tens of millions of dollars on The Voice and he has gotten insane exposure for his music, but the money and fame have changed Blake. He is a cry baby if he doesn't get his own way and he barks orders at people."

There's one thing Shelton openly says he doesn't love about  The Voice , which records in Los Angeles. He admitted to  Rolling Stone ,"I wish to God the show was taped in Nashville. I'd be 200 times happier."

Blake Shelton has donated major funds to an amazing cause

Blake Shelton

In December 2018, Blake Shelton donated $600,000 to kickstart what became the Blake Shelton Cancer Research Program at Oklahoma University's Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City. Two years earlier, he'd donated another $600,000 to the hospital's Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer and Blood Disease in Children in honor of his cousin Aspen Van Horn who underwent cancer treatment there for neuroblastoma when she was just five months old. He brought Van Horn onstage with him during a show in September 2016 in OKC and told the crowd (via Taste Of Country ), "This time last year, we had a scare ... and we didn't know what was going to happen. And you can see that she's here right now ... [Jimmy Everest Children's Hospital doesn't] turn any kids away. You come in there, you have a problem, they don't turn anybody away, so I thought, 'That's a place that needs some money. ... Let's all do the right thing.' This is our money, Oklahoma."

Blake Shelton has a history of problematic remarks

Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton still isn't really known for holding his tongue, but he learned a hard lesson about trigger-happy Twitter fingers. After stopping just short of voicing his support for a then very controversial candidate Donald Trump in an August 2016 issue of Billboard and being named People 's Sexiest Man Alive in 2017 , old Shelton tweets resurfaced that many interpreted as homophobic, sexist, racist, and bodyshaming. The posts included jokes mocking lesbians (including Ellen DeGeneres ), references to violence against gay men, and an insinuation that a non-english speaker was "planning to bomb" something.

The tweets were mostly from circa 2009 through 2011, before Shelton joined The Voice , so they largely flew under the radar at the time they were posted. When called out, Shelton deleted the offensive tweets and apologized with the following : "Everybody knows comedy has been a major part of my career and it's always been out there for anyone to see. That said anyone that knows me also knows I have no tolerance for hate of any kind or form. Can my humor at times be inappropriate and immature? Yes. Hateful? Never. That said, I deeply apologize to anybody who may have been offended."

The scandal died down relatively quickly, and there's reportedly a reason for that. Sources told Page Six that NBC and The Voice reps threatened to revoke "access to the show's stars, and tapings" from outlets that reported on the tweets. Shelton later griped to Rolling Stone that he was "tired of the drama" from Twitter and the "crybaby reaction" to not being politically correct.

Blake Shelton almost officiated Kelly Clarkson's wedding

Blake Shelton, Brandon Blackstock and Kelly Clarkson

On top of being a TV personality, singer, occasional songwriter, and Angry Birds voice actor, Blake Shelton is also an ordained minister. In October 2019, Shelton officiated pal and fellow country singer Trace Adkins' wedding to actress Victoria Pratt, making her Adkins' fourth wife, Today reported.

It wasn't Shelton's only time presiding over nuptials.  Us Weekly reported that in 2013, Shelton officiated collaborator Ashley Monroe's wedding to then-Chicago White Sox pitcher John Danks (while his then-wife Miranda Lambert served as Monroe's maid of honor and wedding planner). He was also slated to both sing at and officiate pal and fellow The Voice coach Kelly Clarkson's wedding to Brandon Blackstock, Entertainment Tonight (via The Boot ) reported, but Clarkson and Blackstock opted to elope instead. Shelton later admitted on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno that he was happy to be off the hook, noting (via The Boot ), "I got to do the really great thing, which is avoid having to go through a wedding. I would rather go to the dentist."

Blake Shelton has made chart history more than once

Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton made country music history more than once. In 2014, Rolling Stone reported that Shelton was the first country singer to top the Billboard Artist 100 chart. Unlike other charts, the Artist 100 takes into account not just sales and streams, but also radio airplay and social media interactions — and it includes every genre, making the achievement an even bigger deal. Three years later, six of the 11 songs on Shelton's Texoma Shore made the Mediabase/Country Aircheck charts simultaneously, WBWN reported, making Shelton the first artist to meet that milestone.

Shelton began challenging records with his very first release.  CMT reported that in August 2001, Shelton's debut single, "Austin," hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart. At the time, it matched the record set by none other than fellow mullet enthusiast Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart" in 1992. In 2015, Shelton's collaboration with Ashley Monroe, "Lonely Tonight," became his 14th consecutive No. 1 —  breaking his own record for most consecutive No. 1 songs. He later broke that record again with "Sangria."

Blake Shelton rarely writes his own songs

Blake Shelton

Considering how successful Blake Shelton is, it comes as somewhat of a shock to many casual fans that he doesn't write most of his own songs. He explained to CBS News , "If I've written 200 songs in my life or 300 songs, I probably have 15 of those that I'm proud of. That I truly go, man, I did something there. And I can't imagine me convincing myself that I'm a better songwriter than some of these people in Nashville. I just want the song to be the best song it can possibly be." Shelton doesn't keep his lack of writing credits a secret, however, and frequently speaks out in support of Nashville songwriting teams .

Still, the ones he does write (via Nash Country Daily ), as he did on songs including "All Over Me," "Friends," "On A Good Day," "Go Ahead and Break My Heart," "The Last Country Song," and "Savior's Shadow," the results are usually great. He and then-wife Miranda Lambert collaborated on "Over You," inspired by the death of Shelton's older brother in a car accident in 1990, as well as several others close to the couple. "He doesn't write that much — I'm definitely way more into songwriting than he is," Lambert told Headline Country in 2012. "But when he does, it's extremely special."

What You Never Knew About Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton

Country artists breaking out of the confines of Nashville stardom and into the mainstream is nothing new, with stars ranging from Reba McEntire to Dolly Parton to Willie Nelson becoming part of the broader pop-culture firmament while maintaining their devoted country music fandom.

One of the more successful additions to this pantheon in recent years has been Blake Shelton . Back in the 2000s, mention of Shelton's name to someone who wasn't a fan of country music would likely have elicited confused stares. Not anymore, though, thanks to Shelton's role in  "The Voice,"  which didn't so much transform him into a television star as reveal he already was one who simply hadn't yet had the opportunity to emerge. Throw in a high-profile divorce from country artist Miranda Lambert and a rebound romance with one of America's most beloved pop stars, Gwen Stefani, and Shelton entered the 2020s as one of the world's best-known celebrities.

Meanwhile, Shelton has proven himself to be complex in his simplicity, a multifaceted singer with an outsized personality tailor-made for television who also boasts the instincts of a stand-up comic. There's a lot to unpack, so read on to discover what you never knew about Blake Shelton.

Blake Shelton got his start performing in pageants

Blake Shelton young

Blake Shelton's talent was apparent from an early age, which led his mother to enter him in pageants. "I hated it so much that I almost, like, didn't want to be a singer anymore," Shelton admitted of his pageant days during an appearance on "Live with Kelly and Ryan," recalling the "embarrassing" experience.

As Shelton clarified for " Entertainment Tonight ," the pageants typically contained "a talent portion" that allowed his 7-year-old self to demonstrate his singing skills. "In order for me to sing in the pageant, like my mom wanted me to, I had to do the evening wear and all that crap," Shelton admitted.

Reluctantly discussing his pageant days during a visit to "The Kelly Clarkson Show,"  Shelton revealed his two big show-stopping numbers were Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock 'n Roll," and "Cat Scratch Fever" by Ted Nugent. The latter song, he recalled, "didn't go over very well with the soccer moms in the audience," who couldn't have been thrilled to see a young boy singing such suggestive lyrics .

He agreed with everyone who thought he didn't deserve to be People's Sexiest Man Alive

Blake Shelton as People's Sexiest Man Alive

Back in 2017, People announced that Blake Shelton was that year's recipient of its annual Sexiest Man Alive honor. If Shelton is to be believed, nobody was more surprised than he was, joking at the time that his reaction to the news was, "That y'all must be running out of people."

A few years later, reported People , he reflected on what it was like to be the Sexiest Man Alive. Explaining he had fully expected to be met with "blowback and hate," he also admitted he totally got it. "I remember, I was like, 'Man, they're right.' Like, I don't disagree with any of this that I'm hearin'."

Of course, in addition to sexy bragging rights, the accolade also offered Shelton the opportunity to lord it over fellow "Voice" coach Adam Levine, who had been named People's Sexiest Man Alive in 2013 . This played out in a filmed bit for "The Voice," with Shelton revealing a giant poster of his People cover plastered on the side of a building, allowing him to declare he is now officially "the sexiest man that's living right now."

The veteran Voice coach once claimed to 'hate reality shows'

Blake Shelton on The Voice

Reality television has been very good to Blake Shelton, who is the longest-serving coach on "The Voice" and the only one to have been on every single season since it premiered in 2011. However, some words he once uttered back in the day have since come back to haunt him. In a 2008 interview with The Boot , he was asked which reality TV show he'd most like to be on. "I hate reality shows," he declared, admitting if he absolutely had  to be on one, it would be Outdoor Channel's "Realtree Road Trips."

Interestingly enough, "The Voice" isn't the first TV singing competition that Shelton appeared on; in fact, when he gave that interview, he had already starred in the short-lived reality show "Clash of the Choirs." The four-episode series, which aired during the 2007 holiday season, featured Shelton alongside fellow "celeb choirmasters" Nick Lachey, Kelly Rowland, Michael Bolton, and Patti LaBelle, each weeding through amateur singers to assemble their own individual choirs.

According to The Hollywood Reporter 's review, Shelton should be thankful that nobody remembers his participation on a show described derisively as "'American Idol' minus the edge meets a Mitt Romney fundraiser."

One of his fellow coaches convinced him to sign on to The Voice

Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, CeeLo Green, Blake Shelton

Given Blake Shelton's stated hatred of reality TV, it shouldn't be surprising that the country star was a bit wary of signing on when he was initially approached with the opportunity to join "The Voice." In fact, he told Men's Journal  that at first, he passed on the offer.

However, he had a change of heart when he found out Christina Aguilera had officially joined the show; the way Shelton saw it, if a superstar of her stature was involved, he should probably take another look. "I was like, 'F***, who am I to be the holdout?'" he told the magazine. "I'm the country guy nobody's ever heard of."

While that may have been true at the show's start, it didn't last for long. As Men's Journal pointed out, "The Voice" propelled Shelton from "modestly popular country singer to the breakout star on the biggest show of the year." Speaking with the magazine, fellow "Voice" coach Adam Levine said that the secret behind Shelton's success on the show was his "punk-rock mentality, where he's not afraid to speak his mind, not afraid to say the wrong thing."

He used to have a pet turkey — named Turkey

Blake Shelton with cowboy hat

Blake Shelton has had some odd pets in his day. In fact, in a 2003 interview with CMT he opened up about his pet turkey, which he aptly named Turkey. As he explained, he'd developed a hankering to start bringing the bird to award shows as his plus one. "It's because I feel a responsibility to my pet turkey, Turkey, to expose him to some different things in the world," he said. Noting that Turkey had not done much traveling, Shelton added, "So, I feel like, without me, he doesn't get to do things, and I feel a responsibility to show him the world."

Meanwhile, in a subsequent interview with The Boot , Shelton revealed he'd once been given another pet by a fan — something he didn't realize until after he'd taken the paper sack he'd been handed back to his tour bus. "I put the sack in my lap and opened it, and a live iguana jumped out of the sack and onto my shirt," Shelton explained. "I screamed like a little girl! I think it took a year off my life — it scared the crap out of me."

He's the first person ever invited to join the Grand Ole Opry via Twitter

Blake Shelton inducted into Grand Ole Opry

Being asked to join the Grand Ole Opry is the dream of any aspiring country singer, proof positive that one has truly arrived as a member of Nashville's most exclusive club. Blake Shelton was invited to join the Opry back in 2010, but his invitation proved to be highly unusual. That's because he was the first-ever singer whose Opry invitation was delivered via Twitter.

As The Boot recalled, the invitation was sent while Shelton was performing a duet with fellow country singer Trace Adkins. As soon as their song finished, Adkins pulled out his cellphone and showed it to Shelton. "Wait a minute, Blake," Adkins said. "You are always on the internet tweeting your fans; now, someone has sent you a message via Twitter." He then read the message, a tweet issued by the Opry, reading, "@blakeshelton, you're invited to join the Grand Ole Opry. See you on 10/23/2010!"

"I know a lot of guys who want this as bad as I do ... but forget about them," said Shelton on the Opry stage when he was inducted, describing that moment to be "hands down ... the highlight of my career."

The one celebrity he would not want to be

Blake Shelton in SiriusXM studio

When Blake Shelton spoke with  The Boot  in 2008, TV stardom on "The Voice" was still a few years off. At the time, one of the questions he was asked was to identify the one celebrity he would not want to be "right now." He offered an interesting answer. "I would not want to be Richard Simmons ... right now or anytime," Shelton declared. According to the singer, he had nothing at all against the "Sweating to the Oldies" exercise guru, other than his signature short shorts. "He seems like a nice guy," quipped Shelton, "but if I had to dress like that? That would absolutely suck."

While that comment was fairly innocuous, eight years later he was forced to apologize for several "inappropriate" tweets from his past — one of which name-checked Simmons. "If you haven't noticed Richard Simmons is gay, you haven't noticed Katy Perry's boobs," he tweeted, as reported by Rolling Stone .

He apologized for the tweet — which was criticized for being both sexist and homophobic — in a statement he issued  via Twitter . "Can my humor at times be inappropriate? Yes. Hateful? Never. That said I deeply apologize to anyone who may have been offended."

Blake Shelton owns a chain of music-themed bars

Blake Shelton at Ole Red Nashville

In 2017, Blake Shelton made a successful foray into the world of hospitality when he opened his  Ole Red bar in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. That led to subsequent locations in Orlando, Florida, and in the Tennessee cities of Nashville and Gatlinburg. In 2021, Shelton took to Instagram to announce plans to open another location at Nashville International Airport.

As Shelton explained in an interview on the Ole Red website , the Tishomingo location also hosts an adjoining music hall called the Doghouse, which features live performances from a mix of established country entertainers and unknown stars-in-the-making. According to Shelton, the Doghouse is all about "creating the opportunity of a lifetime, even if it's just for one kid out there somewhere."

While the Tishomingo location retains a special place in Shelton's heart — given that it's the first Ole Red he opened and is within his beloved home state of Oklahoma — the Gatlinburg Ole Red remains his favorite. "I would say from an artist's standpoint, this is my favorite of the three because of the setup of the stage and what you can see out here in front of you with the two levels," Shelton told  Knox News .

He missed sparring with Adam Levine after he exited The Voice

Blake Shelton, Adam Levine

When Adam Levine  announced in 2019 that he was exiting "The Voice," it wasn't just fans of the show who were shook. Count Blake Shelton among them, given that a big part of the shtick he'd created on the show involved his bromance and rivalry with the Maroon 5 frontman.

"Look, it sucks not having Adam on the show," Shelton confessed in a sit-down with "Access"  later that year, sharing his feelings on the departure of his costar-slash-comic foil. "He's been there since the beginning, you know," Shelton jokingly added, "and it's hard not to have someone that stupid to make fun of."

While viewers of "The Voice" were no longer treated to the duo's witty repartee on a weekly basis, that didn't mean it wasn't taking place off camera. As Shelton revealed, he and Levine had remained close. In fact, he recounted, they'd recently spent 45 minutes together via FaceTime, engaging in "just nonsense talk, you know, stuff that you could never say on TV ... it was just a typical conversation. We stay in touch. I mean, we'll be friends from now on, you know."

Blake Shelton has eaten crow — literally

Blake Shelton on stage

In addition to his various responsibilities as a country singer, television personality and tavern entrepreneur, Blake Shelton has also occasionally lent himself out as a pitchman for products. Such was the case in 2014 when he spoke to the Los Angeles Times in his capacity as spokesman for Pizza Hut's new Bacon Cheese Stuffed Crust pizza. Since he was being paid for his endorsement, he described the pizza in over-the-top glowing terms: "If there was a way to combine awesome with greatness this is what it is," he gushed.

During the course of the food-centric interview, Shelton was asked to single out the "craziest" food he'd ever eaten, and he offered an appropriately bonkers response. "Crow," he declared. "A friend and myself actually cooked some crow so we could actually say we've eaten crow. Don't ever do that."

Meanwhile, Shelton also revealed some of his other food favorites, in addition to the stuffed-crust pizza he was there to promote. As readers learned, Shelton's favorite dish to cook is steak, his go-to brand of beer is Bud Light, and the one dessert he'd be unable to live without is Rice Krispies Treats.

That's not water he's drinking on The Voice

Blake Shelton with beverage on The Voice

Back in 2013, a profile on Blake Shelton for Men's Journal casually referenced his tendency to add "a splash of vodka" to his on-set cup while shooting "The Voice." The following year, Shelton and "Voice" costar Adam Levine were speaking with " Entertainment Tonight " when the subject of what liquid was contained in their respective cups was broached again. "Coffee, ma'am," said Levine of what he drinks on the show, but added, "Blake is a different story, he might want to be the one to tell you."

Shelton fessed up. "I have vodka. I drink vodka on the show," he revealed. "Now that I think of it, every damn brand of vodka has been in that cup. And I don't care if you like it or if anybody likes it, that's what I drink so get over it."

Shelton, in fact, is such a vodka aficionado that he subsequently launched his own brand,  Smithworks American Made Vodka by Blake Shelton . As the budding booze mogul declared in a statement reported by People , he'd "been involved in the development of the brand, and I'm excited for everyone to finally taste what we've been crafting."

Guests at his wedding should be grateful Gwen Stefani was in charge of the planning

Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani were coaches on "The Voice" while each went through their respective divorces; Shelton was breaking up with fellow country star Miranda Lambert while Stefani consciously uncoupled from Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale. While the down-home Shelton and the No Doubt singer may have initially seemed to be an odd match, they subsequently became engaged, and details of their romance have filled countless tabloid pages.

In 2021, the couple finally tied the knot, with Page Six reporting the "intimate" ceremony was held at Shelton's Oklahoma ranch. Prior to the nuptials, Shelton told USA Today (via Yahoo! Finance ) that Stefani had taken charge of the wedding planning — something for which their guests should be thankful.

"If I was picking our meal, it would just literally be everything fried," he quipped. "French fries, chicken tenders, you know, all of that stuff. I think [Gwen] knows that it would be a pretty classless wedding if I was in control."

He loves corn so much he wrote a song about it

Blake Shelton with guitar

While Blake Shelton has gone on record to profess his love of stuffed-crust pizza and Rice Krispies Treats , he's also a big fan of corn — so much so that he actually wrote and recorded a song about it, the aptly titled "Corn."  Given that Shelton's home state of Oklahoma is pretty much bursting with corn , it makes sense that growing up surrounded by the stuff would result in a musical tribute to the crop, featuring such lyrics as "Corn for as far as you can see around here," and "Hey, look at all that corn."

In an interview with Audacy , Shelton discussed the origin of the song, which appears on his album "Body Language." "I plant it, eat it. Like, it's everywhere," he explained, insisting he made a "serious push" to have "Corn" released as a single. However, he explained, execs at his label balked. "They came back with, 'Hey man, I don't know that everyone is as into corn as you are,'" he recalled. Shelton, however, continued his hard sell. "But they are!" he told them. "They just don't know it! It's in their chips, they're making corn bread, they drive past it on the highway..."

Blake Shelton's hair care regimen is kind of bonkers

Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton possesses an enviable head full of thick, shiny hair, and maintaining those luscious locks takes some effort. In fact, during a 2003 interview with CMT , he revealed the extreme lengths necessary to ensure his hair maintains its luster — and the downright unique methods he uses to keep it that way.

"You know, I am raising chickens now, and I have started going out to the barn, or when I am out on the road, I will go buy some eggs, and I use an egg mixture with ketchup, believe it or not," Shelton said of his hair care regimen. "I will soak my hair in that once a week for about an hour."

Over the years, Shelton's hair began to gray. While quarantining with Gwen Stefani in 2020, he revealed on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show"  that he realized his salt-and-pepper hair had become "just salt." Taking matters into his own hands, Shelton ordered a box of Just for Men hair dye. Unfortunately, Shelton's DIY attempts at dyeing his hair left him with locks that were "blue, or purple or something," so he finally let Stefani take charge and "do it right."

I don't even know what this means, but if the fans want me to have it, I'm damn well gonna put it on my mantle! Thank you so much, country music fans. That's right! That's right, social media! Yes!

Ultimate fan guide: 22 things you didn't know about Blake Shelton

Citi Concert Series on TODAY logo

You know Blake Shelton as the successful country crooner who lends his coaching skills to "The Voice."

But how much do you really know about the Grammy-nominated singer who will rock the Citi Concert Series on TODAY?

Test your knowledge with this trivia.

See the full Citi Concert Series on TODAY summer lineup here

1. His career began in a ‘Toddlers and Tiaras’-like fashion

Shelton’s mom may have had a different future in mind for her son. When he was 8 years old, she entered him in beauty pageants to sing. He confessed on Entertainment Tonight that there were no pageants for boys — so he competed with girls. He said it was a good way to pick up chicks.

2. He once rocked a mullet

If Shelton continued his pageant career, his hair definitely would have won some bonus points. The handsome country singer’s look has evolved quite a bit since his high school days when he sported a mullet and large spectacles.

3. Fancy shampoo is not responsible for his luscious locks

“I am raising chickens now, and I have started going out to the barn, or when I am out on the road, I will go buy some eggs, and I use an egg mixture with ketchup, believe it or not,” he told CMT when asked what shampoo he uses. The star said he soaks his hair in that concoction weekly, but other days he uses regular shampoo.

4. He lost his brother at a young age

When Shelton was only 14, his older brother Richie Shelton died at age 24 in a car accident. Shelton co-wrote “Over You” with his ex-wife Miranda Lambert for Richie. While he doesn’t often speak of the death, in November 2015 he tweeted “Wow…25 years ago today we lost my brother Richie Shelton. He’s still my hero going strong. Wish everyone could’ve known him.”

5. The first song he wrote was about his high school crush

Largely inspired by Richie, who loved country music, Blake continued to sing, learned to play the guitar and wrote his first song at 15 called “That Girl Made a Fool Out of Me.” He told Country Weekly in 2001 that the girl didn’t care much for him, and the song is “in the Top 10 of worst songs ever written in the history of the earth.”

6. He moved to Nashville only two weeks after graduation

When Shelton met Mae Boren Axton at a local Opry show, he needed no more encouragement to take the leap to Nashville than the famous artist telling him he’d have a shot if he moved to Nashville. Two weeks after his high school graduation, Shelton moved out. He told Country Weekly that his career didn’t jump-start the way he had expected. His first Nashville job was not performing onstage — but painting Axton’s house. The aspiring artist was fired from his other job in the city making tape copies for a publishing company. The reason? Trying to talk to songwriters instead of simply making the copies.

7. Toby Keith’s “I Wanna Talk About Me” was originally for Shelton

What became a No. 1 hit for Keith was supposed to be released in 2001 by Shelton, but a label executive scratched the single, written by Bobby Braddock. Instead, Keith took on the song as the second single in his album "Pull My Chain." Despite the loss of this hit, 2001 brought Shelton luck of his own with his first single “Austin,” which stayed No. 1 on Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks for five weeks. Shelton's debut album went to be certified gold and contained another hit, “All Over Me."

8. He recorded a song with his mom

Years in the spotlight haven't caused the star to forget his roots. Shelton wrote and performed “Time for Me to Come Home” with his mother, Dorothy Shackleford, who is a beauty shop owner. Featured on his 2012 album "Cheers, It’s Christmas," the song tells of the longing of a son returning home for the holidays. Dorothy continued the story in her novel “Time for Me to Come Home,” inspired by true holiday memories.

9. He owned a pet turkey… named Turkey

In 2003 he told CMT he hoped to bring Turkey to the next country awards show because he felt a responsibility to “expose him to some different things in the world.” Shelton once accidentally fed Turkey turkey scraps on Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, the pet never attended an award show before he died of a heat stroke later in 2003.

10. He was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry via Twitter

In 2010, Shelton received a short Twitter message stating, “You are invited to join the Grand Ole Opry. See you on 10/23/10!” during the ‘Country Comes Home’ Grand Ole Opry show. Shelton received the message after he finished performing onstage with friend Trace Adkins. As he began to exit, Adkins called him back and told him someone sent him a message on Twitter. After the message popped up on the big screen and Shelton calmed down from the surprise he joked, “I know a lot of guys who want this as bad as I do... but forget about them.”

. @blakeshelton , you're invited to join the Grand Ole Opry. See you on 10/23/2010! — Grand Ole Opry (@opry) September 29, 2010

11. He drank booze during an interview

Two days after the announcement of his divorce from Miranda Lambert, Shelton sipped vodka out of a solo cup during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. When asked what he was drinking he responded, “I thought I’d go ahead and get it started early.”

12. He likes to give back

In May 2015, Shelton visited a health clinic on wheels in South Los Angeles that brings care to families in need. However, this was not the only time the star has sought to help others. For his birthday in 2015, Shelton warmed our hearts once again when he asked his fans to donate to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, one of his favorite charities.

13. He rescued an Oklahoma man stuck waist deep in a flood and then drove him home

While most know him for his singing career,"The Voice" and his highly publicized relationship with Gwen Stefani, Shelton has captured the attention and hearts of the public for another reason — his rescue talents. In 2015, he saved a man from an Oklahoma flood after he was left stranded in waist-deep water pushing his truck up a hill. Shelton used with a tow rope and drove the stranger home.

14. If his singing career fails, he has potential as a cop

Shelton once again proved his hero status when he detained a drunken intruder at his uncle’s house in 2007 and held him until police arrived. His mom told the Ada News that “Blake knocked on the door and the man sort of stumbled over and opened it, and Blake said, ‘Hey, you’re in my house man.’” The man was charged with first-degree burglary and public intoxication.

15. Miranda Lambert wasn’t the only one he was smooching during their marriage

In 2012, Shelton posted a picture on Twitter of him showing affection to Carson Daly. Shelton proudly shared the image of the two lip-locked in their special moment, writing “I love @CarsonDaly…really.”

16. He shares his affection with some other lucky fellas besides Carson

In addition to his friendship with Carson, Blake has multiple bromances- which haven’t been so monogamous. Although the singer's friend roster includes A-Listers Adam Levine and Usher, there’s one man Shelton still has his eye on. In 2012 he looked for some Twitter love from Justin Timberlake who he said “never EVER tweets” him.

17. Adam Levine sent him a life-size copy of his ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ cover

Their competitive bromance took a turn when Levine sent Shelton a gigantic copy of his Sexiest Man cover to show his friend who the winner was this time.

18. He wrote a song to impress now girlfriend Gwen Stefani

Even Blake Shelton needs to find a way to capture the attention of a special lady. In order to impress Stefani, he began writing “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” about the fellow "The Voice" coach. After he sent her half of the song he completed on voice memo, she finished the song from her viewpoint. “We could not be on paper, any more different. I mean, I’m a country singer and she’s a ska, rock, pop, whatever it is… and it’s just an odd idea. But man, It’s a lot of fun,” he told TODAY of the pair.

19. He won over TODAY’s Hoda Kotb and her puppy Blake

Shelton will always have a special place in Hoda's heart — as well as her dog’s. Shelton-obsessed Hoda wanted to name her family’s new puppy after her celebrity crush, but was told she was being “stalkerish," so she named the dog Charlie. When Shelton called up Hoda to express how hurt he was that she didn’t name the dog after him, she renamed the pup Charlie Blake.

20. He lost a game of charades against Rose Byrne and Kit Harington

When Shelton teamed up with Jimmy Fallon for a game of charades on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon," the duo got competitive against opponents Rose Byrne and Kit Harington. Before trying to act out being a cat, Fallon joked that Shelton wouldn’t figure out the word because he “lives on a ranch in the middle of nowhere” and “all of his friends are like animals.” He fired back, "You can’t even change a flat tire, don’t talk about real men like that.”

21. He thinks Lucky Charms should only be filled with marshmallows

Shelton expressed the grievances of those who are forced to pick through a box of Lucky Charms to find marshmallows when he took a stance on Twitter in 2013 to let the world know how he felt about the breakfast cereal. He told Lucky, whom he called “stubby,” that nobody wants the toasted oats and to “just give us the marshmallows.” The star’s wish finally came true when General Mills sent him a rare box of the colorful treats minus the oats.

22. You’re more likely to win your way to his heart with a bowl of marshmallow-only Lucky Charms than a five-course sushi meal

“Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon couldn’t believe the country singer had never tried raw sushi before, so he took him on a date to New York City’s Nobu to expand his palate. But don’t expect to find Shelton at a sushi restaurant anytime soon - before Shelton tried the sushi, he said the sake tasted like “Easter egg coloring” and the texture of pickled ginger resembled that of “pre-chewed gum.” His reactions only got better - and more graphic. When it came time for the sushi, Shelton compared raw tuna to “a human tongue.” At the end of the five-course meal, Shelton was rewarded for trying new foods with a surprise Big Mac hamburger.

Lambert stated she "respect[s] him so much as a vocalist," while Adkins said he "is going to be as relevant in this business as he wants to be for as long as he wants to be." Shelton's brother, Richie, died in 1990 as a result of a car crash when Blake was 14 years old. Blake and Lambert wrote about Richie in Lambert's song, "Over You". The song was named CMA Song of the Year for 2012. It was also named Single Record and Song of the Year at the 2013 Academy of Country Music Awards.

In 2011, Shelton started working as a judge/coach to singers on the NBC reality television series The Voice.

The song received 138,000 downloads in its first week and was certified gold in its seventh week, setting a record for the fastest gold certification by a male country singer. On June 13, 2011, in its tenth chart week, "Honey Bee" went to No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, becoming his ninth No. 1 and his fastest-climbing. The album was expected to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with around 110,000 copies sold. "God Gave Me You", a cover of a Dave Barnes song, was the album's second single; it also reached No. 1. Frampton recorded a track with Shelton titled "I Will" on her album Red, released December 6, 2011. Shelton returned for a second season of the show with his finalist Jermaine Paul as the champion. In season three of The Voice, Shelton's team member, Cassadee Pope , was declared the winner with other Team Blake contestant Terry McDermott finishing as runner-up.

As one of the most successful country artists today, Shelton has sold over 10 million records worldwide, and as of 2017, has sold in excess of 30 million singles, while having generated a total of 1.7 billion streams worldwide. Shelton has also amassed a tremendous commercial impact on the country music industry. His debut single "Austin", off his 2001 Platinum-selling self-titled album, tied the record set by Billy Ray Cyrus in 1992, staying atop the country charts for five weeks, and setting the mark for an artist's debut single in the Broadcast Data Systems era. The success of "Austin" also led Shelton to claim the No. 1 position on both Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and Top Country Singles Sales chart, making him the first debut male country artist to own the top spot on both charts simultaneously. Later, in 2010, Shelton's first single, "Honey Bee", from his sixth studio album Red River Blue, set a new record for the most first-week downloads by a male country singer. As a result of the downloads, the song debuted at number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated for the week ending April 23, 2011. This entry made Shelton the highest-debuting male country artist on the Hot 100 since Garth Brooks (recording as Chris Gaines) debuted at number five in September 1999. As a result of the song's massive commercial success, Shelton also claimed the record for the fastest rising single ever to sell over 500,000 digital copies by a male country soloist. In 2013, Shelton's eighth album, Based on a True Story..., spawned the hit "Doin' What She Likes", which broke the record previously set by Brad Paisley in 2009 for the most consecutive No. 1 singles in the Country Airplay chart's 24-year history, since it was first tracked by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems in January 1990. In 2016, "Came Here to Forget", the lead-off single from Shelton's tenth studio album If I'm Honest, extended this streak into a record-breaking 17 consecutive number-one singles, leading him to surpass Earl Thomas Conley's record of 16 consecutive number-one singles. As of 2017, Shelton remains one of only five country artists to have achieved No. 1 status on the Billboard Artist 100 chart, having charted all 156 weeks the chart has existed. The CMA Awards also recognizes Shelton, in addition to George Strait and Vince Gill, as the record holders for the most Male Vocalist of the Year wins, as all three have each garnered five victories. On January 18, 2017, Shelton made People's Choice Awards history by becoming the first country artist to ever win the all-genre category of Favorite Album over competitors Beyoncé, Drake, Rihanna and Ariana Grande. During the ceremony, Shelton also took home the trophy for Favorite Male Country Artist, marking his second consecutive win in the category. On November 6, 2017, Shelton made Country Aircheck history when he became the first artist in the history of the chart to chart six songs simultaneously, from his eleventh studio album Texoma Shore.

Shelton has been a coach on NBC's The Voice since its inception in 2011, and has won seven times.

"Home" was followed in August 2008 by the single "She Wouldn't Be Gone", his 14th chart entry and his fifth No. 1 hit. It was the first time in his career that he had two consecutive number ones. "She Wouldn't Be Gone" is the lead-off to Shelton's fifth studio album, Startin' Fires, which has also produced the single "I'll Just Hold On." This album also includes "Bare Skin Rug," a duet with Lambert. It was produced by Scott Hendricks , except for one track which was produced by Brent Rowan , and another ("I Don't Care", which carried over from Pure BS) was produced by Braddock. After "I'll Just Hold On" fell off the chart in October 2009, Blake Shelton released a duet with Trace Adkins titled "Hillbilly Bone". It was the lead single on Shelton's EP, Hillbilly Bone, released on March 2, 2010, through Reprise Records Nashville. After "Hillbilly Bone" reached No. 1 in February, came the August release of "All About Tonight", the lead-off single to his EP of the same name. In September, he released the second single from All About Tonight, "Who Are You When I'm Not Looking", his 18th single release. He released his first greatest hits album, Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton in November 2010.

Shelton was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry during the September 28, 2010, "Country Comes Home" concert celebrating reopening of the Grand Ole Opry House after the Cumberland River flooded the Opry House in May 2010. The formal invitation was extended on his Twitter account and was announced by Opry star Trace Adkins. He was formally inducted by Adkins at the October 23, 2010, Opry performance. Shelton recorded the title track for the remake of Footloose released on October 14, 2011. Shelton appeared on the 44th Annual Country Music Awards on November 10, 2010, where he performed "All About Tonight" and won Male Vocalist of the Year.

Shelton has been the recipient of 10 Country Music Association Awards, five Academy of Country Music Awards, one CMT Artist of the Year award, and nine CMT Music Awards. He has also received eight American Country Awards, five People's Choice Awards, two American Music Awards, one Billboard Music Award, and one iHeartRadio Music Awards, among others. Shelton has won 27 BMI awards and 27 ASCAP awards. He was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2010, for his many accomplishments in country music, and into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2014, attaining the highest honor one can receive from the state. In April 2013, Shelton was awarded the prestigious Gene Weed Special Achievement Award from the Academy of Country Music for his unprecedented, unique and outstanding individual achievement in country music and television. For his work on The Voice as a television personality, Shelton received the NATPE Reality Breakthrough Award for Best Reality Personality in 2017. Shelton has garnered eight Grammy nominations throughout his career, including nominations for Best Country Album, Best Country Solo Performance, and Best Music Film.

In 2005, Shelton met singer Miranda Lambert at the CMT's 100 Greatest Duets Concert. Lambert also sang background vocals on his cover of Michael Bublé's song, "Home", which became a number-one single on the Hot Country Songs chart. On May 9, 2010, after dating for four years, Shelton proposed to Lambert, after seeking (and receiving) her father's blessing. Shelton and Lambert were married on May 14, 2011, in Boerne, Texas.

Pure BS was re-released in 2008 with three bonus tracks, including a cover of Michael Bublé's hit single "Home". This cover, released in early 2008 as the album's third single, became his fourth No.1 hit in July.

Shelton released his fourth studio album, Pure BS, in early 2007. Unlike with his first three albums, which were produced entirely by Bobby Braddock , Shelton worked with Braddock, Brent Rowan , and Paul Worley as producers for this album. Its first two singles—"Don't Make Me" and "The More I Drink"—were both Top 20 hits on the country charts, respectively reaching No.12 and No. 19. Also in late 2007, Shelton made appearances on television shows: first as a judge on the talent competition Nashville Star, and later on Clash of the Choirs.

On December 18, 2005, several of Shelton's songs, including "Nobody but Me", appeared on the TV movie The Christmas Blessing, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Rebecca Gayheart , Angus T. Jones , and Rob Lowe. Shelton had a small role at the end of the movie, playing himself at a benefit concert, singing "Nobody but Me".

His second and third albums, 2003's The Dreamer and 2004's Blake Shelton's Barn & Grill, are gold and platinum, respectively. His fourth album, Pure BS (2007), was re-issued in 2008 with a cover of Michael Bublé's pop hit "Home" as one of the bonus tracks. His fifth album, Startin' Fires was released in November 2008. It was followed by the extended plays Hillbilly Bone and All About Tonight in 2010, and the albums Red River Blue in 2011, Based on a True Story... in 2013, Bringing Back the Sunshine in 2014, If I'm Honest in 2016, and Texoma Shore in 2017.

Shelton's second album, The Dreamer, was first released on February 4, 2003, on Warner Bros. Records. Its lead-off single, "The Baby", reached No. 1 on the country charts, holding that position for three weeks. Although the second and third singles ("Heavy Liftin'" and "Playboys of the Southwestern World", respectively) only reached No.32 and No. 24, The Dreamer earned gold certification as well. He, along with Andy Griggs and Montgomery Gentry, sang guest vocals on Tracy Byrd's mid-2003 single "The Truth About Men". Blake Shelton's Barn & Grill was the title of Shelton's third studio album, released in 2004. Its lead-off single, the Harley Allen co-write "When Somebody Knows You That Well", peaked at No.37 on the country charts, while the follow-up "Some Beach" became his third No.1 hit, holding that position for four weeks. It was followed by a cover of Conway Twitty's 1988 single "Goodbye Time". Both this cover and its followup, "Nobody but Me", reached Top Ten for Shelton as well. As with his first album, Blake Shelton's Barn & Grill was certified platinum. Accompanying the album's release was a video collection entitled Blake Shelton's Barn & Grill: A Video Collection.

Shelton married long time girlfriend Kaynette Gern on November 17, 2003. They divorced in 2006.

Some years later in Nashville, he signed to Giant Records in 2001. In 2001, he was slated to release a song entitled "I Wanna Talk About Me" as a single. However, staff at the label considered the song unsuitable for a lead-off single, and the song was eventually recorded by Toby Keith, whose version was a number 1 single.

Since his debut in 2001, Shelton has received positive reviews from musicians and critics. The New York Times described Shelton as "the most important and visible ambassador from Nashville to the American mainstream". Rolling Stone referred to him as "one of country music's biggest stars over the past decade."

Shelton was born in Ada, Oklahoma, to Dorothy, a beauty salon owner, and Richard Shelton , a used car salesman. Shelton began singing at an early age and by the age of 12, he was taught how to play the guitar by his uncle. By age 15, he had written his first song. By age 16, he had received a Denbo Diamond Award in his home state. On November 13, 1990, his older brother Richie Shelton (who was 24) was killed in an automobile accident. After graduating from high school at seventeen, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a singing career. There he got a job at a music publishing company and, in 1997, he was aided by Bobby Braddock to obtain a production contract with Sony Music.

Blake Tollison Shelton (born June 18, 1976) is an American country music singer and television personality. In 2001, he made his debut with the single "Austin". The lead-off single from his self-titled debut album, "Austin" spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The now Platinum-certified debut album also produced two more top 20 entries ("All Over Me" and "Ol' Red").
