  • Implemented Netsuite to track promotional KPIs to reduce data loss by 27%.

  • MBA students’ skills are constantly evolving. Therefore, you should list your most recent experiences first on your resume. It’ll give hiring managers a better overview of your current business strategy and analysis abilities.
  • Your attention to detail must be top-notch to understand complex financial documents and performance metrics. Show hiring managers you have the necessary skills with an accurate resume free of grammatical errors.
  • When every dollar spent can make or break the bottom line, hiring managers will want to see a detailed overview of the impact your skills can have. Therefore, using numbers whenever possible is a great idea to emphasize metrics like improved profit margins and cost savings.
  • A one-page resume provides a concise and relevant outline of your key business skills for easy review by hiring managers. Try optimizing what you include for the position. For example, you could include more information about your process improvement abilities if you’re applying to be a business analyst.
  • You must take action and make quick decisions in the fast-paced business environment. Using action words like “improved” or “performed” will make your examples stand out. For instance, you could say you “performed strategic analysis to improve product descriptions, boosting sales by 43%.”

Try to fill in gaps on your resume or get more personal about your passion for the position you’re applying to. For instance, you could explain how you connect with the company’s mission statement or how you use market analysis to your advantage in decision-making.

MBA students without much work experience can benefit from a resume objective . For example, a few sentences about how you have three years of experience using Netsuite to manage KPIs and are eager to apply your technical skills as a product manager would work well as an objective.

Try to fill in with educational experience, hobbies & interests , or an objective to fill out a full page of relevant information. Even other work experiences like performing accurate data entry or providing customer service can still show the ability to make accurate and customer-focused business decisions.

MBA resume templates

We have several real world MBA resumes that have been used successfully by applicants. You can easily download them and edit as you feel necessary. If you are planning to create your own resume layout, we would suggest that you keep these following points in mind.

A well-organized resume layout is essential for easy readability. Use clear headings and subheadings to distinguish different sections, such as contact information, summary or objective statement, education, work experience, skills, and achievements. Maintain a consistent format throughout the resume.

Ensure an appropriate balance of white space on the page. Avoid overcrowding the resume with excessive content, as it can make it difficult to read. Use sufficient margins, line spacing, and spacing between sections to create a visually appealing and uncluttered appearance.

Balanced white space is essential for a good resume layout. It creates visual clarity by giving your resume a clean and uncluttered appearance. By strategically incorporating white space around sections, paragraphs, and bullet points, you can make your resume more visually organized and easier to navigate. This prevents it from appearing overwhelming or crowded, allowing hiring managers to focus on the essential details. White space also plays a role in emphasizing key elements of your resume. By using white space around important sections like your professional summary, work experience, or skills, you can make them stand out and capture the reader's attention. It guides the eye and helps highlight critical information, increasing the chances of it being noticed and remembered by employers.

In addition to visual appeal, balanced white space enhances the readability of your resume. It provides breaks between paragraphs and bullet points, making it easier for the reader to scan and comprehend the content. Well-spaced lines of text and appropriately sized margins improve legibility, ensuring that your resume is inviting to read and increasing the likelihood of important details being understood and remembered.

Furthermore, balanced white space adds an aesthetic appeal to your resume, creating a sense of elegance, professionalism, and modernity. It contributes to a positive overall impression and aligns with contemporary design trends. Additionally, white space ensures adaptability across different resume formats and mediums, making your resume visually appealing and readable regardless of how it is viewed—be it on a computer screen, printed on paper, or accessed on a mobile device.

Choose a professional and legible font that is easy to read both in print and on digital screens. Stick to standard fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman. Use font size 11 or 12 for the main content and slightly larger font for headings to create visual hierarchy.

Maintain consistency in formatting elements such as bullet points, indentation, alignment, and capitalization. This consistency creates a polished and professional look.

A lot of MBA graduates miss out on this very important aspect of consistent formatting. Formatting is everything on your resume. From the bullet you choose, how you align them acoss the document to the font style and font sizes across the document, everything is formatting. Without being consistent in your formatting, you risk your resume being overlooked for being not easy to glance. Quite simply, it does not matter what font types or font sizes you use as long as you are consistent with your formatting in your resume; of course, please stay away from holloween themed horror fonts even if you have won awards in the horror movie industry, of course, unless you are applying to a horror movie director position.

On a serious note, consistent formatting is crucial for creating a professional and polished resume. It ensures that your document has a unified and cohesive look, which makes it easier for recruiters to navigate and understand the information presented. By maintaining consistent fonts, sizes, styles, and alignments throughout your resume, you establish a sense of visual harmony that enhances readability and professionalism.

One of the key benefits of consistent formatting is that it helps guide the reader's eye and creates a logical flow of information. When headings, subheadings, and bullet points are consistently formatted, it becomes easier for employers to quickly scan and find the sections they are interested in. This saves them time and enables them to focus on the content rather than deciphering inconsistent or haphazard formatting choices.

Consistent formatting also demonstrates attention to detail and a high level of professionalism. It shows that you have taken the time to carefully craft and present your resume, which can make a positive impression on potential employers. In a competitive job market, a well-formatted and visually appealing resume can help you stand out from other candidates and showcase your commitment to quality and excellence. And, most importantly, consistent formatting ensures that your resume is easily adaptable to different platforms and mediums. Whether your resume is viewed online, printed, or scanned by applicant tracking systems (ATS), maintaining a consistent format minimizes the risk of formatting errors or discrepancies. It ensures that your resume retains its intended structure and appearance, regardless of the medium through which it is accessed.

Use clear and descriptive headers and subheadings to guide the reader's attention and make it easy to navigate through different sections of the resume. This helps employers quickly find the information they are looking for.

Use formatting techniques such as bolding, italicizing, or underlining to highlight important details, keywords, or section headings. This creates a visual hierarchy that guides the reader's focus and emphasizes key information.

While keeping the resume professional, consider using subtle color accents or graphics to add visual interest and highlight specific elements. However, use them sparingly and ensure they complement the overall design without overpowering the content.

Use bullet points to list achievements, responsibilities, or skills. Keep them concise, specific, and consistent in structure. Begin each bullet point with an action verb to make it more impactful.

A well-designed layout can be undermined by spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, or formatting inconsistencies. Carefully proofread the resume and use spell-check tools to ensure accuracy.

Keep in mind that many resumes are now submitted electronically or viewed on screens. Ensure your layout is adaptable for different digital formats and remains visually appealing and readable.

Email address Include a professional email address that you check regularly. Avoid using personal or unprofessional email addresses. It is recommended to use your full name or a combination of your name and initials in your email address. One small tip: do not include crazy-sounding, unprofessional email addresses. For my own resumes, I keep a separate email address that I do not use for anything else, and I make sure to check it a couple of times a day when I am in the job market.

If you do not have a professional looking email address, create one exclusively for job searches. [email protected] is not a great email address on a resume.

Linkedin Profile If you have a well-maintained LinkedIn profile, it can be beneficial to include the URL to your profile. Ensure that your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and showcases your professional experience, skills, and achievements. This allows potential employers to learn more about you and your qualifications. Do you know you can shorten your linkedin profile link? If you have a long name, go to linkedin and shorten your public URL and then include the shortened link.

Optional Depending on the region and industry practices, you may also consider including additional contact information such as your physical address or professional website/portfolio. However, exercise caution and include only relevant information that aligns with the job application requirements and industry norms.

Remember to double-check the accuracy of your contact information before submitting your resume. Mistakes in phone numbers or email addresses can hinder potential employers from reaching out to you. Additionally, ensure that your voicemail greeting, if you have set up one, is professional and that your email inbox is regularly monitored for any communication related to your job search. Oh, also, mind the caller tunes. Some recruiters often get confused if your phine is ringing or it is a fancy "Out of coverage area" alert.

Write a concise summary or objective statement that highlights your career goals, relevant skills, and what you can bring to potential employers. Tailor this section to showcase your specific MBA-related achievements and aspirations, emphasizing your unique value proposition as a candidate.

Include your educational background, listing your MBA degree and the institution you attended. Provide the year of graduation or expected graduation, as well as any relevant honors or awards. Mention any coursework or specializations that are particularly relevant to the job you are applying for.

Detail your professional experience, focusing on positions that demonstrate your leadership, managerial, and business skills. Include the job title, company name, dates of employment, and a description of your key responsibilities and accomplishments. Emphasize your contributions to strategic decision-making, project management, financial analysis, and any other relevant achievements. Quantify your results and highlight specific outcomes to showcase the impact you made in previous roles.

Highlight the key skills you have developed throughout your MBA program and previous work experiences. This can include technical skills such as data analysis, financial modeling, or project management, as well as soft skills like leadership, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. Align these skills with the job requirements to demonstrate your suitability for the position.

If you have completed any notable projects or internships during your MBA program, create a separate section to highlight them. Describe the projects, the skills you utilized, and the impact you made. Quantify your results where possible to showcase your achievements and the value you brought to the projects. If you have been already working, you can ignore including the internship aspect and projects.

MBA programs often emphasize leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities. Include any leadership roles you have held, such as being part of student organizations, clubs, or community initiatives. Highlight positions of responsibility and the impact you made in these roles, demonstrating your ability to lead and collaborate effectively.

If you have obtained any certifications or received notable awards related to your MBA studies or professional development, list them in a separate section. This can include certifications in areas like finance, data analytics, or project management, as well as any awards for academic excellence, leadership, or industry recognition.

It is generally not necessary to include references on your resume, but you can mention that they are available upon request. Prepare a separate document with your references and have them ready when needed.

By thoughtfully considering and expanding on these sections in your MBA resume, you can effectively highlight your qualifications, experiences, and achievements to impress potential employers and increase your chances of securing job interviews in the competitive MBA job market.

How to show hobbies on a MBA fresher resume?

Including hobbies on a resume is optional and depends on the individual's specific circumstances and the industry they are targeting. Here are a few reasons why MBA graduates might consider listing hobbies on their resume:

Hobbies can provide insight into your personality, interests, and skills outside of the professional realm. Certain hobbies can demonstrate desirable qualities like leadership, teamwork, creativity, or problem-solving abilities, which can complement your professional qualifications.

Including unique or interesting hobbies can help you stand out from other candidates. It adds a personal touch to your resume and can make you more memorable to potential employers. It can also spark conversations during interviews and create connections with interviewers.

Some organizations prioritize cultural fit when making hiring decisions. Sharing hobbies that align with the company's values, mission, or industry can indicate that you will fit well into their work environment and share common interests with colleagues.

Hobbies can serve as conversation starters during networking events or interviews, helping you establish rapport and build connections with recruiters or potential employers. It provides an opportunity to showcase your passion and enthusiasm beyond your professional experiences.

Including hobbies can portray you as a well-rounded individual with diverse interests and a balanced lifestyle. It suggests that you have interests outside of work, which can indicate good time management skills and the ability to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

While including hobbies can be beneficial in certain situations, it is important to exercise discretion. Consider the relevance of your hobbies to the role or industry, and be mindful of the space available on your resume. If a hobby does not add value or is not directly relevant, it might be better to focus on highlighting your professional qualifications and experiences instead.

Suggestions on how to pick Hobbies for MBA resume

Select hobbies that are relevant to the job you are applying for or highlight skills that are transferable to the workplace. For example, if you are applying for a job in the e-commernce industry, hobbies such as pricing, web design, or competitor analysis can demonstrate your passion and expertise in the field.

Even if your hobbies are not directly related to the job, they can still demonstrate transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership, or communication. For example, if you enjoy playing team sports like Cricket, Football etc., or enjoy voluntary work at your local neighbourhood schools, this can demonstrate your ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with others.

It is important to keep your hobbies section brief and relevant. Only include 1-2 hobbies that showcase your skills and interests. Remember, the focus of your resume should be on your academic achievements and technical skills.

Only include hobbies that you are genuinely interested in and have pursued in the past. Avoid including hobbies that you think will impress the employer but that you have no real interest or experience in. I have seen personally in so many interviews where a candidate has not read a book in ages but include rading books as a hobby. Remember, hobby is a great conversation starter, especialyl with senior hiring mangers who do the last screening rounds in the interview process. Just be honest and it is perfectly fine not to include any hobbies if you don't have any serious hobbies.

If you have achieved any accomplishments related to your hobbies, such as winning a competition or volunteering for a charity, be sure to include them. This can demonstrate your dedication, commitment, and skills outside of academics and work experience. Examples are being voted the best in the competitions at college, being an invited speaker, winning a regional football competition for your college, etc.

By following these tips, fresh MBA graduates can effectively showcase their hobbies on their resume and demonstrate their unique skills, interests, and personality to potential employers.

Why MBA Fresh graduates don't get interview calls

There could be several reasons why some MBA fresh graduates struggle to receive interview calls despite having a great resume. I am sharing here my thoughts based on the outlook we have of the job market, especially for MBA graduates.

The job market can be highly competitive, especially for fresh graduates. The number of available positions may be limited compared to the number of applicants, making it challenging to secure interview opportunities.

Applying to job openings indiscriminately without tailoring applications to the specific requirements of each role can result in low response rates. Fresh graduates should focus on quality over quantity and customize their applications to match the job requirements.

The reputation and ranking of the MBA program can influence the perception of employers. Graduates from lesser-known or lower-ranked programs may face more difficulty in getting interview calls compared to those from prestigious institutions. Well, if you are about to graduate or already graduated, there is no point fretting over this point. You are better off understanding the companies, the positons they have available and the skills you need to develop so you have a great shot at the available opportunities.

This is definitely in your hands. A poorly crafted or generic resume can fail to highlight the key skills and experiences that recruiters are looking for. Fresh graduates should ensure their resume effectively communicates their education, internships, projects, and any relevant achievements.

Fresh graduates may face challenges if they lack in-depth knowledge about the industry or specific roles they are applying for. It's important to showcase industry-specific knowledge and demonstrate a genuine interest in the field. But, you can address this challenge by attending industry-specific conferences, webinars and meet up events to learn about the industries you are interested in.

How to format an MBA application resume

US universities typically prefer the reverse chronological format  because it demonstrates your career trajectory and recent achievements. Plus, it makes it easier for ATS to scan and prioritize your resume.

Since ATS often verifies candidate details like higher education and PAN and Aadhaar for authenticity , including accurate information and relevant keywords can help ensure your resume passes initial screenings.

Ensure the resume sections are organized as follows:

  • Professional Experience
  • Education & Certifications
  • Skills & Areas of Expertise
  • Special Achievements

Before we explore the format specifics, it’s crucial to note that each institution may have its own resume standards , so MBA applicants should adhere to those guidelines.

Design tips

  • Use standard margins  (0.5-1") to keep the resume clean and readable.
  • Opt for a single-column layout , often preferred in academia, because it provides a clear and organized structure that's consistent and easy to follow.
  • Stick to traditional fonts  (10-12 pt) and a black-and-white palette for a professional appearance.
  • Aim for a one-page resume  to demonstrate efficiency, as other application documents, such as your personal statement  and recommendation letters, will provide additional support and context.

Contact information

  • Include your name, phone number,  and professional email in the header .
  • Use a job title that mentions your current position, preferably corresponding to the MBA program’s focus. You can also add a resume headline  tailored to the program description and drawing attention to your key strengths.
  • Add a LinkedIn profile link  to emphasize your professional network and accomplishments.
  • Omit a photo  to better focus on your qualifications and avoid potential biases.

File format

  • Name your file  clearly (e.g., "Jordan Smith MBA_Resume.pdf").
  • Save your resume as a PDF  unless the job posting requests a different format.

Test your current resume with our free resume checker , which evaluates it across 5 different categories.

Next, let’s tackle the necessary resume sections  one by one, starting with the most prominent one—your work experience.

How to write your MBA resume experience

When crafting the experience section  of your MBA resume, prioritize your professional history over education if you have more than two years of work experience. Admission committees review countless resumes, so placing your most relevant experiences at the top ensures they see your strongest qualifications first.

Select and list your most significant roles in reverse chronological order, focusing on positions where you made a substantial impact. Add 3-5 bullet points for each role, using the S.T.A.R. method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) as follows:

  • Start each bullet point with an action verb  and list your most significant successes first. University evaluators often skim resumes, so place your strongest accomplishments at the top to grab their attention.
  • Highlight your leadership and interpersonal skills in each role.
  • Quantify your achievements  with solid numbers and precise data to make your claims more credible and clearly showcase your qualifications.

Most importantly, to make your resume more impactful and relevant, present your experience in a way that aligns with the specific demands  of the MBA program.

Targeting your MBA resume experience

A targeted resume  for MBA applicants is one that’s specifically customized to the requirements and focus areas of the MBA program you’re applying to. This means you should underscore experiences, skills, and achievements that match the program's values and objectives.

Here’s what else you should consider:

  • Emphasize skills and accomplishments related to the MBA program’s focus, such as strategic thinking, or industry-specific expertise.
  • Incorporate keywords  and phrases from the MBA program’s description and mission statement to ensure your resume resonates with what the admissions committee is looking for.
  • Use a format and language that cater to the expectations of the MBA program, avoiding unnecessary jargon and focusing on clarity and impact instead.

Let’s look at a real-world MBA program description, which we’ll then use to craft a targeted experience section entry.

  • It clearly reflects the roles and responsibilities valued by the particular MBA program.
  • The experience section integrates relevant keywords from the MBA program’s description to increase the resume ATS score and appeal to the admissions committee.
  • Metrics such as percentages and dollar amounts illustrate the impact of the applicant’s work.

Speaking of metrics, below we’ll provide you with some more tips on how to measure your work accomplishments on a resume.

How to quantify your experience on an MBA resume

Using numbers and results on an MBA resume makes your qualifications more credible and compelling. To quantify them properly, use specific metrics to showcase your contributions tangibly.

Look at the following examples of quantified impact:

  • Increased sales revenue by 20% within six months through targeted marketing strategies.
  • Managed a team of 10, leading to a 30% improvement in project delivery times.
  • Reduced operational costs by $150,000 annually through process optimization.
  • Oversaw a $2 million budget, achieving 10% savings through efficient financial management.
  • Boosted customer satisfaction scores by 15 points through enhanced service delivery initiatives.

Maximizing MBA Value: Starting Salaries and Industry Variations

According to an MBA.com study , graduates from top-ranked MBA programs, such as Stanford and Harvard, often secure impressive starting salaries averaging $175,000. Salaries vary by industry, with tech roles at about $128,000, finance at $138,000, and consulting surpassing $140,000. Notably, in 2023, top consulting firms like McKinsey and Bain have boosted their starting salaries to $192,000, highlighting the lucrative potential of a top MBA.

To achieve those impressive starting earnings, you should first secure your admission. Given that top institutions place significant emphasis on personal skills, let’s explore which skills you should put on your MBA resume to enhance your chances of getting accepted.

How to list your skills on an MBA resume

For an MBA resume, you can create a dedicated skills section , but it's not a requirement. Given the diverse backgrounds of applicants and the lack of a universally applicable skill set, a more efficient approach might be better. You can integrate your hard skills  into the summary and experience sections, spotlighting them through specific results and achievements.

Here are the most useful hard skills you can emphasize on your resume.

Best hard skills for your MBA resume

  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Word
  • Google Analytics
  • Adobe Analytics
  • Google Cloud Platform

When deciding which soft skills  to add, focus on those that reflect the program’s emphasis on leadership  and management. Underline your teamwork, strategic thinking, and decision-making  through your experience and summary sections. Remember to mention their impact on your professional growth.

Here are some more examples you might want to consider for your resume:

Best soft skills for your MBA resume

  • Communication
  • Problem-solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Time management
  • Adaptability
  • Conflict resolution
  • Negotiation
  • Strategic planning
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Project management
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Collaboration
  • Presentation skills

Skills are important, but MBA programs also require specific educational qualifications for admission. See how to effectively list your educational background on your resume below.

How to list education and certifications on an MBA resume

When applying to an MBA program, ensure your resume has a clear education section, mentioning:

  • Degree or field of study
  • University/college name and location
  • Graduation date
  • GPA (if 3.5 or higher)
  • Relevant coursework

If your work experience is limited, you can leverage your application with a strong education section. Focus on significant awards or formal recognitions  from your academic career, and avoid including high school achievements or irrelevant activities.

To distinguish yourself in Harvard  or other prestigious MBA applications, your resume needs to be meticulously crafted. Given that Harvard's median GMAT score is 730 , prominently feature your GMAT or GRE score in your education section, using bold font and a clear layout.

Here’s how the education section  should look if you’re applying to the MBA program at Chicago Booth:

  • • Graduated with Honors, specializing in econometrics and market analysis.
  • • Completed a senior thesis on financial market trends, which was recognized at the university’s annual research conference.

If you want to further emphasize your specialized knowledge, listing any relevant certifications  you have can be valuable. Here are some that can help you stand out in case they align well with the target program description.

Top certifications for your MBA resume

  • Certified Financial Analyst (CFA)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Six Sigma Green Belt (SSGB)
  • Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA)

After featuring relevant certifications, it's essential to tie your qualifications together with a strong summary that encapsulates your unique value and career objectives.

Resume summary for MBA applicants

The MBA resume summary  is a critical section that should succinctly convey your professional identity, key achievements, and career goals.

When writing it, consider the following guidelines:

  • Begin with your professional title and years of experience in business leadership.
  • Incorporate key skills and experiences that are tailored to the MBA program’s focus, and clearly articulate how you intend to leverage the MBA for your future goals.
  • Focus on what makes you unique among applicants with similar backgrounds.
  • Maintain a concise format with 3-5 impactful sentences, using dynamic adjectives  to emphasize achievements, and avoiding the first-person perspective  to keep the focus on your qualifications.

This summary tailors the candidate’s achievements and experience to fit perfectly with Chicago Booth’s focus on leadership in business. Connecting specific accomplishments with the program’s values, shows how the applicant is uniquely suited to contribute and thrive in this top-ranked MBA environment.

Do you need additional sections on an MBA resume

While a well-rounded MBA resume can benefit from some additional sections, it's crucial to be strategic. More content is only effective if it adds real value to your application. Aim to insert sections that truly underscore your strengths without overwhelming the reader or seeming forced.

Below are some ideal options to include in your MBA resume:

  • Publications : List articles, research papers, or reports you've authored to   accentuate your thought leadership and expertise in your field.
  • Projects : Detailing significant projects can illustrate your hands-on experience and problem-solving skills.
  • Affiliations : Memberships in professional organizations can demonstrate your engagement with industry networks and your commitment to ongoing learning.
  • Volunteering : Feature notable activities that underscore soft skills crucial for business success.
  • Speaking engagements: List relevant conferences, workshops, or seminars you’ve spoken at, along with any significant contributions.
  • Portfolio : Including a link to an online portfolio can be highly beneficial for MBA candidates with backgrounds in fields like project management, consulting, or creative industries.
  • Languages : Proficiency in multiple languages can enhance your global business acumen.

In conclusion

To impress AdComs with your MBA resume, highlight how you intend to transform the business world and back it up with your current professional successes. Showcase your achievements and connect them with the program’s values to demonstrate your potential for making a significant impact.

You’ve worked hard to earn an MBA, and now you can apply for jobs that let you use that knowledge and training. Crafting an MBA resume is about highlighting your business and leadership skills and experience in a way that targets the specific job you’re applying for. Learn how to do this with the tips and examples below.

1. Summarize your Master of Business Administration qualifications in a dynamic profile

The first section of your resume is the profile summary. Provide potential employers with a snapshot of who you are as a business professional and what you can do for their organization. The profile summary for an MBA resume will differ for each applicant, so customize it to where you want to go in your career while keeping the language focused on how you can help the employer. You may want to list your years of experience, specific management competencies, and key career highlights, such as growing a business into the seven-figure range.

Senior-Level Profile Example

Dedicated project manager with a track record of leading teams to successful implementations. More than 12 years of experience planning and managing multi-million-dollar projects that pair business needs with technological solutions that drive improved processes and revenue growth. Looking to share project management expertise while developing new skills.

Entry-Level Profile Example

Results-driven technology entrepreneur with innovative ideas and a community focus. Experienced at managing projects to bring products from ideas to market. Planned and developed a clothing line that grew to a $1 million turnover in two years.

2. Add a compelling section featuring your Master of Business Administration experience

When you’re writing the professional experience section of your resume, it’s important to focus on what results you’ve created in your previous positions. Hiring managers looking for MBA candidates often focus on growing the business, increasing profits, or moving a start-up into a mature business. Use the bullets in this section to show how you led your team, implemented more efficient systems, increased profits, and communicated with stakeholders.

Senior-Level Professional Experience Example

Project Leader Kappa Consulting, Tampa, FL | June 2012 – present

  • Guide implementation of new IT systems for variety of clients, including security systems, disaster recovery, and data protection

  • Negotiate with venture capitalists to secure $2 million in funding to expand the business

3. Include Master of Business Administration-related education and certifications

As an MBA graduate, your education is important to who you are as a candidate. It’s also likely that the position you’re applying to has specific education requirements, and listing your degrees on your resume lets a hiring manager quickly determine that you’re a good fit. Certifications and credentials, such as being a Six Sigma Black Belt, can help define who you are as an applicant and how this position fits into your career plan.

  • [Certification Name], [Awarding Organization], [Completion Year]
  • [Degree Name]
  • [School Name], [City, State Abbreviation] – [Graduation Month and Year]
  • Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

4. List Master of Business Administration-related skills and proficiencies

Including related professional skills and competencies is a key part of creating your resume. Each job you’re applying for has a specific list of qualifications that outlines who would be a good candidate for the position. Look for your skills that are a direct or close match and create a list a hiring manager can easily skim to determine whether you should move on to the next round. Below, we’ve included some of the most common skills hiring managers are looking for in MBA candidates.

Key Skills and Proficiencies

How To Pick the Best MBA Resume Template

MBA resume styles are extremely varied because of the wide range of careers and positions they apply to. When you’re choosing an MBA resume template, stick with simple and easy-to-read ones that use a clean format and plain text. Your resume should look like a professional business document, with clear organization, short sentences, and bullet points. Bolding and italics can also help you visually separate the sections and make it easier to skim.

How do you align your resume with a job description? -

MBA graduates often move into management positions, and this is good news for job seekers because the Bureau of Labor Statistics is anticipating an overall 8% job growth for management positions through 2031. More open positions mean more opportunities for applicants, but it can also mean you’re sending out more resumes. Aligning your resume with the job description by including keywords and qualifications from the posting can help you stand out and have a better chance of being called for an interview.

What is the best MBA resume format? -

The best MBA resume format depends on your professional background and what position you’re applying for, but a combination resume format works well for many MBA graduates. A combination format makes it easier to group skills, such as technical proficiencies, management competencies, and soft skills, for a more engaging and organized resume. This format also gives you room to include a shortened version of the traditional professional experience section, providing a hiring manager with a better idea of your background.

When applying for a new job, the cover letter can often be the difference in whether you move on to the next round or get put in the rejection pile. An MBA cover letter allows you to show a little more personality while expanding on the career highlights in your resume and explaining why you’d be a good fit for the organization.

How to Format an MBA Resume

Admission committees receive thousands of applications every year.

As such, they tend to skim-read as they go through the pile of resumes.

To make their job easier, and to put the odds in your favour, you need to use the correct format.

Also, the hiring manager will think again before choosing an applicant whose resume lacks professionalism.

The most common resume format is “ reverse-chronological ”, so we’d recommend this format for your MBA resume:

MBA reverse chronological format

There are two other popular formats that you could try:

  • Functional Resume – This resume format design is for those who have a lot of valuable skills, but don’t have the professional experience. As such, this format is ideal for those who are transferring to a new industry or have gaps in their employment history.
  • Combination Resume - As the name suggests, a combination resume is a combination of “Functional” and “Reverse-Chronological”. As such, this format is ideal for those who have both skills and experience.

Once you’ve decided on the format, you need to get your resume layout right.

For a professional layout, here’s what we recommend:

  • Margins - One-inch margins on all sides
  • Font - Pick a font that stands out, but not too much.
  • Font Size - Use a font size of 11-12pt for normal text and 14-16pt for headers
  • Line Spacing - Use 1.0 or 1.15 line spacing
  • Resume Length - Don’t go over the 1-page limit. If you’re having trouble fitting everything into one page? You may want to view these one-page resume templates .

Use an MBA Resume Template

Word is great for a number of purposes, but as a resume builder is not one of them.

Imagine this: you create the perfect resume, make one change, and then the whole thing falls apart.

In fact, you’ll likely find yourself playing around with the formatting for longer than you take to write the contents.

To make your life easier, use an MBA resume template .

What to Include in an MBA Resume

The main sections in an MBA resume are:

  • Contact Information
  • Work Experience

For a resume that stands out even more, try adding these optional sections:

  • Awards & Certification

Interests & Hobbies

It’s now time to go through each of those sections, and explain how to write them...

Not sure which sections to use for your MBA resume? Check out our guide to What to Put on a Resume .

  • Certain schools have specific rules in place, which means that you read the application requirements before writing your resume or choosing a template. You may be forced to use the school’s predefined resume templates.

How to Correctly Write Your Contact Information

You could create the best resume in the world, but if you make mistakes in the contact section, you won’t be receiving any phone calls.

For your contacts, include:

  • Professional Title
  • Phone Number - Quadruple check this!
  • Email Address - Make sure to use a professional email address ([email protected])
  • Portfolio Link - Behance, Dribble, or your personal website
  • (Optional) Location - Applying for a job/program abroad? Mention your location.
  • Josh Fakenham - MBA Graduate. 101-358-6095. [email protected]
  • Josh Fakenham - MBA Whiz Kid. 101-358-6095. [email protected]

How to Write an MBA Resume Summary or Objective

Did you know that recruiters spend less than 6 seconds reading each resume?

This means that you have only a few seconds to impress the reader.

You need a message that shows the value that you’ll bring, and fast!

The best place for this message is right at very top of the resume.

This top paragraph is known as a resume summary or resume objective.

Although the two are very similar, there are a couple of differences:

A resume summary is a 2-4 sentence summary of your professional experiences and achievements.

  • Professional Marketing Analyst with 5+ years of experience in creating ads, writing copy, and overseeing campaigns. Improved revenue by 34% for Company X in 2017. Looking to leverage my marketing expertise to contribute to School X’s knowledge exchange.

A resume objective is a 2-4 sentence snapshot of your professional goals and aspirations.

Enthusiastic Business Management graduate, with one year experience as a freelance marketing consultant. Created creative copy for Client X, which increased conversions by 65%. Skilled in SMM, SEO, copywriting, and web design. Seeking a chance to offer my unique insights on marketing, while developing my skills in management.

So, which one do you pick?

A resume summary if the best option if you have any previous and relevant work experience, whereas an objective summary is the best option if you’re a graduate with little or no work experience.

How to Make Your Work Experience Stand Out

To get into a competitive MBA program, you need to show that you mean business.

The easiest way to show this: your work experience .

Sure, your core skills are important too, but professional experience always comes out on top. Start with your most recent/current job, and then follow it with your previous job, and so on. Here’s the general structure of your work experience section:

  • Position name
  • Company Name
  • Responsibilities & Achievements

Business Development Associate

Fishing Tackle XYZ

03/2017 - 03/2020

  • Upon hire, completed in-depth business analysis, which lead to a 28% profit increase that year (2017).
  • Revamped UX for the website, which boosted revenue by 17%.
  • Created an innovated fulfilment system that saved $200,000 in operational costs.

You may have noticed that the above example lists the top achievements , rather than daily tasks.

So, instead of saying:

“Web design”

“Revamped UX for the website, which boosted revenue by 17%”

So, what’s the difference between the two?

The second statement goes into more depth about how your responsibilities were something that helped the company. Doing this allows your resume to stand out and reveals the value you bring.

Remember, you need to keep reminding the reader that you are the best choice , compared with other applicants with the same work duties.

What if You Don’t Have Work Experience?

Maybe you’re a recent university graduate with no work experience?

Or maybe, you have a wealth of experience, but none relating to your MBA?

Whichever the reason, don’t worry!

The thing that really matters here is your portfolio.

If you already have some portfolio pieces, feel free to upload them and link to your resume (we’re going to explain how in a bit).

However, don’t worry if you don’t, you can act now.

Here are several ways you can get a portfolio (and get paid for it):

  • Work on some freelance gigs.
  • Offer your business knowledge to your friends & acquaintances.
  • If the above doesn’t work, you can create your own mock-ups! Basically, anything that shows your skills and knowledge.

If you’re a recent graduate, you might want to check out our guide on how to make a student resume !

Use Action Words to Make Your MBA Resume POP!

  • “Responsible for”
  • “Worked in”

Flick through a bunch of MBA resumes, and you’ll notice one thing: they all include these same words.

And since you want your resume to stand out, we recommend using power words instead.

Here is a list of power words that make your responsibilities and achievements stand out:

  • Conceptualized
  • Spearheaded

How to Add a Portfolio to Your Resume

Create a “Portfolio” header, and then link to your website (or Behance / Dribble), and list your relevant portfolio pieces. It should look like this:

www.mikebusiness.com

  • E-Commerce – Created an online shop as part of a university competition
  • Business Plan – Created a business plan for a local company that wanted to expand operations
  • Web Design – Managed a Kickstarter campaign for an innovative cooking brand – successfully raised $400,982

Don’t want a dedicated portfolio section? Just link to your online portfolio in your contact information section.

How to List Your Education Correctly

Welcome to the education section!

If you’re lacking experience with a company or on your own projects, your education is the best chance to impress on an MBA resume .

Simply list out your education entries, like this:

  • Degree Type & Major
  • University Name
  • Years Studied
  • GPA, Honours, Courses, and anything else you might want to add

B.A. Finance

University of Chicago

  • Relevant Courses: International Macroeconomics and Financial markets, Introduction to Economics, Business Organisation and Management, Principles of Financial Accounting, Quantitative Methods in Accounting and Finance

Before we conclude this section, here are some of the most frequent questions we get from MBA candidates (and their answers!):

What if I haven’t finished education?

  • Whether you’re still a student, or you dropped out, you should still mention your best education achievements to date. Simply include the years/courses studied, and you’re good.

Should I include my high school education?

  • Only if that is your highest education. The hiring manager doesn’t need to know about your high school education if you have a B.A.

What is more important, education or experience?

  • Experiences come before education, always.

Need more answers? Check out our guide on how to list education on a resume .

Top 8 Skills for an MBA Resume

You see, the person reviewing the applications will have been briefed about a range of skills to look for. If you don’t include the skills they’re looking for, the hiring manager will likely put your resume straight into the “no” pile!

Need some inspiration?

It’ll depend on the specific MBA program you’re applying for, but here are some of the most common and desirable skills...

Hard Skills for MBA:

  • Quantitative research
  • Big data analysis
  • Financial forecasting

Soft Skills for MBA:

  • Communication
  • Leadership
  • Strategic thinking
  • Accept and learn from criticism

Looking for a more comprehensive list? Here’s a mega-list of 150+ must-have skills .

Other Resume Sections You Can Include

Now, the other candidates will all have similar job experiences.

To stand out, you need to ensure that you’ve got something no other candidate has.

After all, if your resume looks exactly the same as everyone else’s, you’re not putting the odds in your favour.

Utilizing the following sections is the easiest way to give your resume that first-class treatment.

Awards & Certifications

Did you win an MBA award while studying?

Have you completed any MBA-relevant courses on Coursera?

In such a competitive marketplace, be sure to mention any awards and certifications in your resume!

Awards & Certificates

  • “User Experience Research & Design” - Coursera Certificate
  • Adobe Certified Expert
  • “Best Business Pitch Award” - University of Chicago
  • Google Analytics Certificate
  • “Learning How to Learn” - Coursera Certificate

Are you passionate about business?

Well, that’s exactly what the hiring manager wants to know.

The easiest way to show your love of business is by showcasing the results of your own project.

Here are some ideas:

  • Start your own e-commerce shop
  • Giving business consultation to local businesses
  • Reviewing business plans of friends & family

The project section should look something like this…

Your resume is designed to impress the hiring manager.

And what better way to make a lasting impression than by revealing that you speak multiple languages.

Besides, being able to speak a second (or third) language can always come in handy, even if the MBA doesn’t specifically require it.

If this relates to you, and you have space in your resume, definitely include a languages section.

Make sure to split the languages by proficiency:

  • Intermediate

With the rise in MBA popularity, employers are looking for more than just hard skills and qualifications.

Your resume needs to stand out from the competition, and one of the easiest ways to do this is to become relatable.

The best way to become relatable is to talk about your hobbies and interests.

If you’re not sure which hobbies & interests to mention, you can read our guide!

Match Your Cover Letter with Your Resume

MBA programs are competitive.

So competitive, that a resume and a list of references simply won’t cut it.

So what’s the answer?

Well, a cover letter!

Here’s the thing: a well-written cover letter tells the recruiter that you want a place in this exact MBA program, not just sending a generic resume to all programs.

As such, a cover letter can significantly boost your chances of landing that prestigious MBA!

Here’s how to get the structure right:

MBA cover letter structure

And here’s what to write in each section:

Contact Details

Your personal contact information, including full name, profession, email, phone number, location, and website (or Behance / Dribble).

Hiring Manager’s Contact Information

Full name, position, location, email

Opening Paragraph

Your introduction should be very strong. If you don’t manage to hook the hiring manager here, chances are, they’re not going to read the rest of it. So, mention…

  • The position you’re applying for
  • Your experience summary and top achievement

Once you’ve got the hiring manager hooked, you can go through the rest of your background. Some of the points you can mention here are...

  • Why you want to work for this specific company
  • Anything you know about the company’s culture
  • What are your top skills and how are they relevant for the job
  • If you’ve worked in similar industries or positions

Closing Paragraph

This is where you:

  • Wrap up any points you missed in the body paragraph
  • Thank the hiring manager for their time
  • End with a call to action. Something like, “I’d love to discuss further how my experience as an X can help the company with Y”

Formal Salutations

Use a formal closing, such as “Best regards” or “Sincerely”.

  • The header of your MBA application resume should be written in the largest range of 16-20 font-size .

MBA Resume: Personal Information

  • Website Links (if any)

MBA-Resume-Contact-Details

Hiration Pro Tip : Try to avoid giving details of your marital status, religious affiliation, or political inclination in your resume unless explicitly asked for. Most countries have forbidden it by law to mention these things as it may lead to biased hiring.

You need to provide your contact number because there may be times when the recruiters would want to interview you over the phone or get a verbal confirmation for any likely shortlist.

Always provide only the functional and active contact number by using the correct resume format for MBA given below:

  • Use your country’s ISD code as a prefix before your phone number
  • Put a plus sign (+) before the ISD code
  • Eg: +1 37648 21511

Emails can be considered a convenient means of communication between you and the recruiters. Provide your email address that has your real name for any official or professional purposes.

Example: [email protected] or [email protected]

Strictly avoid fancy and childish made-up names in your official email IDs as it can make you seem like an immature applicant who is not serious about one's career.

Example: [email protected] or [email protected]

If you do not have an official email ID with your real name, create one right away.

Follow the given resume rules while writing your location in your resumes for MBA application:

  • If you are looking for a job in your country, mention the city and state of your residence. On the contrary, simply write your city and country of residence if you are looking for a job outside the country.
  • Avoid giving your house number, street number, and locality name as they are of no use to the recruiters.

Keep in mind that you should give out only the required information and strictly avoid any unnecessary pieces of information on a resume.

To know what an ideal personal information section should ideally look like, take a look at the resume sample below:

Personal Information Section in MBA Resume

MBA Resume: Profile Title

Profile titles can be regarded as your level of professional identity and status in a resume.

It ideally communicates the following facts to the recruiter:

  • Your current designation.
  • Your functional industry.
  • Your level of seniority in your line of work.

Write it as the second-largest text in your MBA application resume after your resume header in the font range of 14-16 font size .

Exaggerating your profile title will pass off as intentionally cheating the recruiters; hence you need to compose it accurately.

Given below is a resume sample showcasing the ideal profile title for your MBA application resume:
