From the first day in their new home, the women are hooked on to a new TV show 'Sab Khairiyat' (All's Well). The show is about a family eerily similar to theirs who have also just moved into a new house. As the TV show unfolds, all the incidents that happen in the show start happening to Manohar and his family. Initially, a number of happy events take place and a lot of good things happen, both in the show and with Manohar's family.

’13B’ and the Overlooked World of Indian Horror

The world of Indian horror has much to offer fans of the genre. With the rising interest in South Indian cinema, cinephiles are now discovering that they have barely scratched the surface of their exposure to Indian films. Vikram Kumar ’s 13B: Fear Has A New Address is an underrated gem in that department, and it checks almost all the boxes of being a great horror film.

With the overwhelming success of S. S. Rajamouli ’s RRR , moviegoers everywhere have flocked to scour the world of Indian cinema beyond just Bollywood. Being the seventh largest country in the world with a population of over 1.4 billion, there’s so much more that the country has to offer in terms of films than Bollywood – the film industry primarily based in North India that produces films in the Hindi language. RRR introduced Western cinephiles to the world of South Indian cinema, including Tollywood, a different film industry that’s primarily based in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which produce films in the Telugu language.

Due to the many different languages spoken throughout the country, India has over 20 film industries catering to specific regions. And within those industries come a litany of films that all fall into their own genres – it’s no wonder that India produces, on average, over 2,000 films per year as opposed to the average 600 films produced yearly in the United States.

This may sound like a treat for movie lovers who actively seek to watch undiscovered films. For horror fans, Indian cinema delivers some pretty solid scares if you know where to look. Enter 13B: Fear Has a New Address . 

Released in 2009, the film was written and directed by Vikram Kumar and made with a relatively low budget of ₹12 crores (approximately $1.4 million). Despite its modest budget, 13B manages to pull off some downright creepy and disturbing ambiance in its two-and-a-half-hour runtime. The film was simultaneously filmed in 2 languages – Tamil and Hindi – with the former being titled Yavarum Nalam , contributing to its box office success and earning it ₹23 crores (approximately $2.8 million). 

As the title suggests, 13B is a haunted house horror, taking place mostly in a single location. It tells the story of Manohar and his family, who move into a new apartment on the 13th floor, where he starts experiencing strange occurrences from a soap opera that only gets broadcasted on his TV. The film takes inspiration from the world of J-horror, with its central gimmick being the aforementioned spooky soap opera. However, this Indian horror goes a little further by introducing a shocking twist in its climax with scares to go along with it.

If déjà vu feels like you’ve already experienced something, then 13B is the reverse of that. The soap opera, titled “Sab Khairiyat” (which translates to “Everything’s Fine”), serves as the centerpiece of the story, with its plot seemingly mirroring the events that occur in the Manohar household. However, as the story unfolds, it is revealed that it is they who mirror the plot of the daytime serial as it begins foretelling their future.

There’s a lot to love about 13B , one being the actors’ performance – particularly from R. Madahavan, who plays the leading man, Manohar. Largely considered a rather underrated actor, Madhavan delivers a flawless performance here, portraying a man who has no idea what’s going on but who is determined to save his family. Dhritiman Chatterjee, who plays blind neighbor Mr. Kamdhar, is also a standout here.

In a time when South Indian horror was all about extensive set pieces and over-the-top CGI, 13B managed to ground itself by offering a simple premise and impeccable storytelling. See, many Indian horror filmmakers love setting their movies in large mansions with stories that are all interchangeable; someone gets possessed by the spirit or entity that used to reside in that space and is now seeking revenge on those who have wronged them. There are hundreds of films with that exact premise, but these films also don’t clearly define the powers of the spirit, making these ghosts pretty much invincible. While it may seem like a minor gripe, 13B was largely praised for clearly defining what the spirits can and cannot do. It was refreshing for a film to take itself seriously and commit to the narrative.

13B also delves into the realm of techno-horror, in the same vein as Pulse by Kiyoshi Kurosawa and One Missed Call by Takashi Miike . The spirits in this film have the power to possess technology – be it a mobile phone, a television, or even the building’s elevator, as long as it happens within the grounds of 13B. And director Vikram Kumar plays with this concept remarkably well, hinting at the number 13 at various points throughout the film. That little subtext with the number 13, although it’s never explained in the movie, gives it much more depth. The film and audience both know the significance of the number 13, especially in horror, and 13B feeds into that. It’s one of those horror films that respects its audience, and most of us have come to appreciate that.

Over the years, there has been a plethora of Indian horror films that have come and gone, but only a few manage to stick to the landing. There has been a distinct trend as of late in Indian horror where the actual ‘horror’ takes a backseat in favor of a more light-hearted comedy suitable for the whole family. While these films are fine, some better than others (2007’s Muni is great), it leaves the actual horror fans feeling rather left out. If you’re looking to explore great South Indian horror, then films like 13B, ​​ Arundhati , Eeram , and Maya are worth checking out. Most of these films are available for free on YouTube, so fellow horror fiends, eat your heart out!

Do you believe in spirits? Have you had paranormal experiences? If the answer is in the negative, 13B would try to make you believe in them.

For almost three decades, the Ramsays used skulls-n-skeletons to scare the living daylights out of you. But post BHOOT, supernatural thrillers, errie and spooky themes and scary movies have only evolved this side of the Atlantic.

13B, directed by Vikram Kumar, belongs to the same family as THE RING and PULSE. No, it's not a copy of these two films, but there's an uncanny resemblance: A home appliance is used by the spirits to convey their message.

To give the credit where it's due, 13B involves you in the proceedings and most importantly, scares you as well. But the director, who also happens to be the writer of the film, ought to know an unwritten rule for movies of this genre. Cut it short. 13B is stretched, sorry over-stretched by at least 25-30 minutes and you just can't help but exclaim, 'Enough! Come to the point please.'

The problem is, 13B takes its own sweet time to come to the point. Besides, you can't help notice the blemishes in the screenplay. What eventually comes across is a film that had the stamina to win the marathon, but which runs out of breath and starts huffing and puffing midway.

Manohar [R. Madhavan], an upwardly mobile middle class Indian, moves into a new apartment -- 13B on the 13th floor -- with his family. From the first day in their new home, the women are hooked to a new TV show 'Sab Khairiyat'. The show is about a family eerily similar to their family, who have also just moved into a new house.

As the TV show unfolds, the incidents that happen in the show start happening to Manohar and his family. Initially, a number of happy events take place and a lot of good things happen, both in the show and with Manohar's family. Then things take a turn for the worse and shocking incidents start happening in the TV show.

Will the same happen to Manohar and his family? Will Manohar be able to solve the mystery in time before it consumes him and his entire family?

Now let's look at the plusses: P.C. Sreeram's exceptional camerawork, the brilliant sound design and of course, an energetic background score that enhances the mood. Add to it a few individualistic sequences, which merit ample praise. The sequences with the septuagenarian neighbour and his dog are exceptional, especially the sequence when the dog refuses to enter the flat.

But the screenplay goes back foot at regular intervals. In fact, the writer builds up the story really well, it reaches its crescendo and then... it blows it up. The viewer is curious to get to the bottom of the mystery and when you do reach there, you aren't too convinced with what actually unravels.

If the television set had to spill the beans towards the end to the culprit, why didn't it do so to the main protagonist earlier? Also, a photo album is unearthed from the play area of the garden, but how come it wasn't unearthed when the mansion gave way to a high-rise apartment? Even the track involving Deepak Dobriyal had the potential to be a great 'twist in the tale', but the limitations in the writing show up during this chapter as well.

Director Vikram Kumar has executed the material well, but he should've limited the running time of the film to 1.30 hours or maximum 1.45 hours, definitely not 2.28 hours [yes, that's the running time of this film]. Dialogues are, surprisingly, pedestrian. How could the director okay them in the first place? Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is more of an intrusion. Ideally, it should've been a songless film.

Madhavan does a commendable job. This is amongst his better works. Neetu Chandra is alright. Amongst supporting actors, Deepak Dobriyal's body language and performance leaves an impression. Poonam Dhillon gets no scope. Sachin Khedekar is wasted. Dhrtiman Chatterjee, the neighbour, is first-rate.

On the whole, 13B is interesting in parts, not in entirety. Also, as mentioned earlier, films of this genre, the world over, have a shorter duration [1.30 hours or 1.45 hours] and the approx. 2.28 hours' running time would test the patience of the viewer. At the box-office, with cricket matches on one hand and examinations on the other proving major oppositions, this scary movie would prove to be a scary proposition for its investors.

India box office: ‘stree 2’ scores top hindi film opening of 2024.

The latest Hindi film, 'Stree 2' has made a record breaking start at the ticket windows.

Producers Dinesh Vijan, with his Maddock Films, seems to have cracked the code for Hindi blockbusters - their latest movie Stree 2 had a grand opening on Thursday, August 15, and the film has earned more than $9.6 million globally on the first day of the release. In India alone, the film managed to score a record opening of $7.7 million gross collections. On the second day of the release, Friday (a working weekday), Stree 2 is expected to cross $13 million dollars globally.

The figures include the paid previews that were held a day before on Wednesday. The film reportedly made nett collections of $6.5 million in India on Thursday. The paid previews of the horror-comedy accounted for more than $1 million, out of the $7.7 million opening in India.

Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 is a sequel to the 2018 horror-comedy Stree which emerged as a surprise hit at the ticket windows. Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee and Aparshakti Khurana reprise their roles in the new film.

With the grand opening score, the horror-comedy is now the top opening Hindi film of the year 2024. The collections surpassed those of Hrithik Roshan-Deepika Padukone-starrer Fighter and the Hindi version of the Telugu epic sci-fi Kalki 2898 AD . Stree 2 is also the second-highest opening Bollywood film ever, after Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan which made an opening of $8.9 million. The film is also the biggest opening film ever for Kapoor and Rao.

Stree 2 , the fourth film in Maddock Films’ supernatural universe, brings village boy Vicky (Rao) and his friends back to tackle the new evil facing them - the headless spirit that threatens every woman with a modern outlook. After the successful box office run of Stree in 2018, the producers have had two horror-comedy releases before Stree 2 - Varun Dhawan-starrer Bhediya in 2022 and the recent one, Munjya that hit theatres earlier this year.

Stree 2 succeeds in recreating the magic of the first film, if not better. The punches are perfectly aligned, the twists well set in a narrative which is painstakingly woven into a seamless story meant to win hearts and entertain them. The entire cast needs to be credited for their brilliant work in the movie. While the story offers Rao and Kapoor better scope for strong performances, it does not fail or sideline the characters. Well-etched characters being played by actors who ace their game enhance the entire movie experience.

Laced with humour and entertainment, Stree 2 also highlights gender and social issues that plague the society. Right from addressing judgemental views to pointing out gender-biases, Stree 2 does it all with the perfect dose of entertainment.

Stree 2 released with two other Hindi films that also had a wide release. John Abraham's Vedaa and Akshay Kumar-starrer Khel Khel Mein also hit theatres on August 15, Thursday. Kumar faced yet another box office disappointment as Khel Khel Mein made an underwhelming opening of mere $950,000 on Thursday. Abraham's Vedaa made an opening collection of more than $1 million.
