Essay on Mobile Phones: 400 Words

When telephone was first introduced in the world in the 1950s, people were keenly interested in it. As an easier way of communication, telephone has its own merit. Of late, the introduction of mobiles makes an easy access to communication. It is in fact inevitable in the present day of hurry and business. People have warmly accepted mobiles as the blessing of science. There is little doubt that without the use of mobiles none is nowadays able to lead one’s life quite normally. One is capable of communicating with people, staying far away very quickly. Thus many a problem can be well- solved by way of using these mobiles.

But everything has its merit and demerit. As science is a bane as well as a boon, mobiles are to some extent to be cursed. People, especially the young generation, have been abusing mobiles. They not only chat in an unexpected way but also indulge themselves in leading immoral life by abusing mobiles. Apart from this, several mercenary companies exploit the advantage of mobiles to meet their selfish ends. They do business through mobiles. As a result, young people have been misguided. To use mobiles is for them to be up to date. They avail themselves of the opportunity of the internet connection in their mobiles and do whatever they like to do. Obscene video clippings and some other versions of immoral entertainment are now available in mobiles. Therefore, the students have now tremendous fascination for the mobiles. Consequently, instead of studying, concentrate on using mobiles for sheer fun.

Another demerit is that because of the excessive use of the mobiles different companies plunge themselves into doing profitable business. Consequently, numerous towers have been erected for the network of mobiles. It is well known that a particular wave which is responsible for the mobile network does harm to the ecological balance of the environment. It is evident in the pale colors of the trees and fruits adjacent to the mobile towers.

Thus, it is the time to be conscious of the abuse of the mobiles. The concerned authority should take immediate steps to stop immoral business which is proliferating in abusing mobiles. All should remember that the sole purpose of mobile is to communicate. Entertainment may be available in the network of mobiles. But there should be no immoral design. Above all, the government should restrict the use of mobiles, so much so that anti-social activities may not be done through mobiles.

No Privacy:

These days one of the major concerns is losing one’s privacy through mobile usage. Now anyone could easily access all the important information related to you with just one tap. Time and money both are precious in everyone’s life. As the utilization of mobile phones is increasing day by day, the waste of time and money is also increasing gradually. People are becoming addicted to their phones, be it surfing the internet or playing games or checking social media. Besides, the smarter a phone becomes, the more money people spend to buy that phone instead of spending the money on something useful.

Although almost all modern essays are written in prose, compositions in verse have often been labeled as essays. Introduction

Mobile phones for teenagers: negative impacts.

Mobile phones, which were invented a few decades ago, have become important communication devices utilized by society members of all ages. One age group that has made persistent use of mobile phones is teenagers. Teenagers’ overuse of phones has had a marked effect on their school lives. This paper will address the negative impacts that mobile phones are having on teenagers’ school life.

Mobile phones impose financial pressures on teenagers since these devices act as status symbol objects. Campbell (2005) confirms that most teenagers have the desire to upgrade their phones in order to fit in with their peers.

Since most teenagers do not have a source of income, they have to rely on their families to buy them phones and pay the phone bills. This raises issues of financial disputes and some teenagers end up stealing money from their parents to spend on their phones.

Teenagers use mobile phones to aid in cheating during exams. Students use their cell phones to communicate with each other during exams and therefore obtain answers to the test questions. Students can also cheat by getting answers from their phone memory or the internet.

Campbell (2005) documents that while teenagers have always engaged in cheating; mobile phones have increased the level of sophistication in cheating and decreased the chances of the misconduct being detected by the teacher.

Mobile phones are also problematic in school since they increase the level of disruption. Research indicates that teenagers are reluctant to switch off their phones while in class and this leads to learning activity being disrupted when the student receives a call or a text (Campbell, 2005).

Even when the student does not access his/her mobile phone, the excitement of finding out what the message is about results in the student losing interest in the class leading to poor academic outcomes.

Mobile phones have significant negative impacts on teenagers’ school life. This paper has demonstrated that mobile phones cause financial difficulties, enhance cheating, and disrupt lessons. Parents and teachers should therefore forbid teenagers from having mobile phones in school.

As the most advanced and modern living beings on the earth, human beings need equipment and devices to communicate with each other and with the world. Mobile phones are the most sophisticated communicating devices which enable people to not just talk with others, but also to play games, watch movies, listen to songs, and enjoy different modes of entertainment.

Mobile phones were established in 1973 as portable handsets. But from there it has evolved into walkie-talkies, small mobile phones, and later on the androids and iPhones. The greater the change in appearance, the better the quality of the phone. Today mobile phones are the definition of development. Without it, the internet cannot be used and one will remain completely disconnected from the world.

If there is anything that can define the 21st century is the gadgets that human beings use for their daily purposes. Several instruments are necessary for our daily needs and we simply cannot think of our lives without them. A mobile phone is one of those gadgets which occupies a very important position in our lives.

It was invented by the Motorola company on 3rd April 1973 as a portable handset like the handset of the landline telephone connections. Its only purpose at that time was to make and receive phone calls. The portable form made it altogether more attractive. For a more extended period, such phones or walkie-talkies were in vogue.

However, with a change in time, mobile phones also have undergone evolution at different levels. In the beginning, the handsets were reduced in size, and a screen was added to see the time, place, and the name of the person calling.

It was equipped with other minimal settings and language changes and also provided with a small fun game. With the invention of smartphones as android systems and later through iPhones, today the concept of mobile phones is greatly altered. It includes a camera, internet, banking facilities, and several applications for shopping and selling. The Internet now defines the use of mobile phones. So without this device, one can hardly even exist in the modern world.

The mobile phone is one of the most important devices of all. It is the premium model of communication and environment in the present-day world. Since its invention, it has now undergone several evolution and changes. As a result, it has tied up with the developing century and accustomed itself to its needs. Today we can hardly think of living without a mobile phone for even some hours. It is the most indispensable need of mankind and a marker of its development.

Mobile phones were invented by the Motorola company on 3rd April 1973, as portable headsets so that they can be used as a walkie-talkie. It is the first step towards the development of mankind in a more sophisticated method. It enabled humans to use it without the connecting wire of the landline telephone connections. However, those sorts of telephones were only used for calling and receiving phone calls. It had no screen and only buttons for calls.

Later on, with gradual research and developments, phones were modified into the first modern-day mobile phones, famously popularized by Nokia. It was the first handset with a screen that was much more than just simply calling the other person. It included a small screen for the first time that showed the time and simple details of the mobile phone. It contained several minimal settings and also some simple games for fun purposes.

The mobiles had ringtones and colour changes for personalized versions of their own. Thus with this more research took place and the present android system was created for the first time. Companies like Samsung, Nokia, Lenovo, and others started producing androids. It has much more developed functions with the application of the internet.

Thus more sophisticated games and software can now be accommodated into this new system. Systems like video calls and other messaging facilities, and social media applications like Whatsapp, Facebook, messenger, and others are introduced into android phones. Presently, iPhones are the most expensive and sophisticated ones.

With growing times mobile phones have also developed. However, that has created ample problems too. Many people including children are getting addicted to their phones. Harmful games and gambling are destroying the youth. Several health issues are happening due to the prolonged use of mobile phones. Also, phones are becoming quite expensive to afford by the common people with low capital. Thus with these difficulties in mind, one has to be quite careful in handling this modern electronic device.

I have tried to adopt a very simplistic approach to writing these essays for a better understanding of all kinds of students. Essay on Mobile Phone Boon or Bane – 400 Words

Mobile phones are a boon as they are used for a number of useful purposes. Nevertheless, there is also no denying the fact that a gadget as useful as a mobile phone could sometime be annoying and irritating.

Boon or Bane

Of course mobile phones are a boon given to the number of useful purposes they are used for like – internet, voice or video chat, documentation etc. Despite from the usual there are other uses like – social media and remain updated about the developments. Today every mobile phone user has a social media account, which he manages from his mobile phone. It helps him/her to remain connected to family and friends as well as other dignitaries like politicians, actors, cricketers etc.

But despite all the advantages, mobile phones could sometimes be annoying too. The use of mobile phones for various purposes and the accessibility of internet have compromised the privacy of the user. Also, every form that we fill today has a mandatory column asking to provide the phone number. Today the number of a common mobile phone user is available with many marketing agencies whose main aim is to sell their product. This loop hole in privacy has led to unwanted and unexpected marketing calls. People get annoying calls from insurance agents, marketing executives, etc, trying to sell their products to the mobile phone user, who is not at all interested.

Next in line is social media. Social media is a place where people share their views, pictures etc with those who are connected. However, this has also compromised the privacy to a certain level as someone undesirable could also peek into your account and send annoying messages; trailing you regularly. Such unwanted social buffs could be really annoying and some people are known to be trailed so regularly using inappropriate and indecent comments that they had to totally shut down their social media account.

In the end it would be more appropriate to say that mobile phones are both a boon and a bane. They are a boon when used appropriately and within limits but could be bane when they are used with mala fide intentions. Even a useful gadget as a mobile phone could be well annoying when it is used with the bad intention of deceiving someone, trailing him/her inappropriately on social media and other accounts.

There are advantages and disadvantages to mobile phones. First, let’s discuss the positive aspects. Our mobile phones facilitate easy communication with friends and family. With our phones, we may use the internet to discover new things as well. With their maps, they make it easy for us to locate our route, and we can even snap photos with them.

However, there are also some drawbacks. Overuse of phones by some individuals can be problematic. It might cause eye pain or even make it difficult to fall asleep. Furthermore, excessive phone use might cause us to lose focus when driving or walking, which is risky.

Thus, we must use our phones responsibly. It’s important to remember to take pauses and not use them excessively. Similar to consuming candy, moderation is key when it comes to this. Utilizing our phones sensibly may make them enjoyable and beneficial. However, we must exercise caution so as not to allow them to cause us issues.

With so many benefits, mobile phones have become an essential part of our life. They facilitate communication and let us stay in touch with loved ones no matter where we are or when we want. Additionally, mobile phones offer instant access to information, which keeps us up to date on global events. They are also useful for navigation, taking pictures to save memories, and even handling our money using mobile banking.

But there are also some disadvantages to these advantages. Overuse of a phone can become addictive, diverting our attention and decreasing our productivity. Extended periods of screen usage can lead to health problems like strained eyes and disturbed sleep cycles. Other drawbacks include privacy issues and the possibility of cyberbullying, which emphasise how crucial it is to use mobile phones properly.

Maintaining a balance in the use of mobile phones is crucial to maximise their benefits while minimising their drawbacks.

Argumentative Essay on the Use of Mobile Phones in Schools

Here you have an argumentative essay on the use of mobile phones in schools with Pdf. You can Download it free from here, and take advantage of many more essays examples.

Introduction

There are both positive and negative effects of cell phones on today’s generation. In my opinion, there are good reasons why students allow cell phones to be used in schools.

Parents can communicate directly with their children in emergencies. During break time, when there is no continuous classroom, children can easily talk to their parents and get the information they need from them. Besides, if students suddenly decide to participate in an after-school program, they may be able to quickly inform their parents about the use of their cell phones.

The endless technological advances these days have made cell phone use more common. First, computers and then cell phones significantly impact people’s lives. Therefore, we all need to educate our students and inform them of the benefits and benefits of using cell phones.

In my opinion, students have the right to bring their cell phones to school until the classroom is not disrupted. If they do, teachers may punish him. Sometimes, school phones do not work well and have very little value. If by the time most students need a phone, how will they be able to contact their parents? That’s why I think; students must be allowed to bring cell phones to school.

There may be situations where students plan to meet alone in other areas. If so, they will not be able to contact you by phone at school. With their cell phones, they can easily communicate with others. They could even use their cell phones as a counter flashlight at school.

Mobile phones help to increase mobility and flexibility between students and their parents. Students can use a cell phone for a Caffe, a library, a toilet, and anything else if that does not affect anyone else. If students need their parents to bring them something important to the school, cell phones will help students.

Allowing mobile phones in school does not mean that students have the opportunity to use mobile phones in any way. They should not spend time playing games on mobile phones at school. As a result, the school may introduce new rules such as whether students will need to put their cell phones in front of them or hand out their cell phones to teachers. If the phone rings or students need to call someone, teachers will give them phones.

Many schools in India do not have computers. Therefore, cell phones that are very useful for students can be used to learn a few things that should be taught on a computer. If a person forgets to bring his notebook, he can quickly take notes on his mobile phone.

There are also the adverse effects of cell phones, such as private games, obscene viewing of the toilet, etc. But school authorities must take action and make new rules for these things. Parents of learners should be kept informed of everything they do at school on their mobile phones. If these things are not done, mobile phones should be allowed to be used in school by students.

The use of mobile phone is as antisocial as smoking. Smoking is banned in certain places so mobile phone should be banned like smoking. To what extent do you agree or disagree? OR

Some people believe that having a conversation on a mobile phone in a public or crowded place should be banned. Others feel that we should be able to talk wherever we like. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

It has been claimed that, like smoking, mobile phones should be banned in some places due to their harmful effects. While I accept that the use of mobile phones is antisocial in some ways, I believe it has more benefits and therefore, should not be prohibited.

On the one hand, I agree that the use of mobile phones can sometimes be antisocial. Firstly, these devices might disturb people’s work or study in some cases. For example, the sound of a mobile phone can interrupt a lecture, which affects the concentration of students. Secondly, the use of mobile phones also adversely impacts communication between people. Since individuals currently tend to spend too much time using mobile phones, they seem to have less time to interact with others.

On the other hand, I disagree that mobile phones should be banned because of certain reasons. The first one is that since they allow people who live far away from each other to speak or send messages, they help people keep in touch more easily. For instance, students who study abroad can use mobile phones to make phone calls or even video calls with their families. The second reason is that mobile phones often provide users with many useful applications such as maps and weather forecasts, which can make people’s lives become easier. Additionally, using mobile phones is not as bad as smoking as some people think. While smoking directly affects people’s health and leads to health problems, the negative influences of mobile phones are less serious.

In conclusion, while I agree that mobile phones are sometimes antisocial, I believe they should not be banned.

  • Never Message Someone When You're Tired or Inebriated

Key Takeaways

  • Too many people ignore the basic rules around messaging, acting rudely compared to real-life interactions.
  • You should avoid Shatner messaging and writing long essays, and acknowledge messages without nagging for a reply.
  • Be aware of who, when, and what you're messaging, use emoji and acronyms sparingly, and always use proper spelling and grammar.

Regardless of whether you text, or use a dedicated messaging app such as iMessage or WhatsApp, there are certain rules you should follow. Unfortunately, not everyone seems to have gotten the memo listing the fundamental messaging etiquette everyone should know. So here, to help you out, are 11 dos and don'ts I always adhere to...

1 Avoid Shatner Messaging (A Series of Short Messages)

An example of Shatner messaging via text

While you may not be familiar with the term "Shatner messaging," you will likely be familiar with what it refers to. This is, simply, a series of short messages sent quickly when one longer message would have sufficed. The worst offenders may even send one word at a time for dramatic effect, creating endless notifications on your phone.

The name references the way William Shatner of Star Trek fame speaks. He has a tendency to add pauses between words and that matches the style of messaging being used here. Whatever you choose to call it, please stop doing it.

2 Never Write Long Essays Without a Pause

An example of a long essay via text

In direct converse to Shatner messaging, some people write long essays as messages, and that's just as unnecessary. Even if you have a major point to make to someone, take pity on their soul by not sending them a long, rambling message that covers multiple subjects all at once.

Instead, focus on one subject, and send the message. Then allow them to respond before moving onto a different subject. If you imagine how this would feel in a real-world conversation rather than an online message, you can easily see how inappropriate and unnecessary it is.

3 If You Read a Message, Always Acknowledge It

An example of a lack of acknowledgment to a text

We all have that one friend who lets a conversation on a messaging app run out without acknowledging that it's ending. And we all know that it is rude. You should always acknowledge a message in some way, even if it's just a tick or thumbs-up emoji. It lets the other person know you've seen it and are ready to move on.

Why is this rude? Well, imagine you were talking to someone face-to-face, and they just walked off without bringing the conversation to a conclusion in any way. You would be annoyed, and rightly so. And we need to employ the same basic level of politeness in our online interactions too. We should even be polite to AI chatbots !

4 Don't Nag Someone to Reply to You Quickly

A message begging for acknowledgment of receipt

While it's tempting to metaphorically poke someone when they haven't replied to a message immediately, it's also rude. They may be busy, so unless you know that they're online and available, give them the benefit of the doubt.

However, there is a limit to this. As already mentioned, it is rude to completely ignore someone's message, so if they haven't replied or acknowledged it in some other way, say 24 hours later, you're well within your rights to send a follow-up message.

5 Be Aware of the Time You're Messaging Someone

A message apologizing for texting late

With the planet now interconnected like never before, you will likely have family and friends located all over the world. And messaging allows you to communicate with them freely and easily like never before. But you need to be aware of the different time zones that exist.

I work with a lot of Americans, and they know not to message me during the evening their time, as it would be the early hours of the morning for me here in the UK. While most people use Do Not Disturb to stop this from being an issue, you should also be aware of what time (in their timezone) you're messaging someone.

6 Remember Who It Is That You're Messaging

A text message about an edgy joke

It's often easy to forget that different recipients require different types of messages. For example, I speak very differently in family WhatsApp groups than I do in groups containing similarly-aged and similarly-minded friends. Because what you say and how you say it should differ between different sets of people.

As well as talking differently to friends than you do to family, you should also soften your tone in conversations with work colleagues or your boss. They may not appreciate the risqué picture you meant to send to your significant other, or the joke you meant to send to your friends.

7 Never Send Anything Inappropriate Via a Message

A message apologizing for a rude joke

Even if you think the recipient will appreciate what you're sending, you should always think twice before sending anything inappropriate. This can range from the aforementioned risqué pictures and edgy jokes to anything containing personal or sensitive information.

I would even urge caution when badmouthing one friend to another, as messages can be screenshotted and used against you. Screenshots can also accidentally dox you , but that's another issue entirely. Friends come and go, and if you have messaged the wrong thing to a friend you then fall out with, that wrong thing could be used against you.

8 Use Emojis Sparingly (and Appropriately)

A text message full of emojis

For many of us, emojis have become the default way to react to things we see online, including messages. And that's absolutely fine. I love them as much as the next person, as they give us all a shortcut way of acknowledging something.

However, you can use emojis too often, and if you do so, not only do they lose their impact, you'll start to look lazy and uncaring. Emojis (such as a thumbs-up or a laughing face) are good when a message doesn't justify an actual response, but not when you're asked a direct question or speaking about something serious.

9 Always Use Proper Spelling and Grammar

A text message filled with spelling and grammar mistakes

This messaging rule likely won't go down with younger generations, many of whom see proper spelling and grammar as entirely optional demands. But I think everyone should at least strive to spell words correctly, and place commas where (and only where) they need to be placed in all forms of written communication.

All the way back in 2012, I wrote an article about why typos always matter, even in text messages . And while the world has moved on a lot since then, with messaging apps taking over from SMS text messages, I still believe my point remains valid.

10 Never Assume That Everyone Knows Text Slang

A text message filled with acronyms and slang

Acronyms are commonly used when messaging people, mainly because SMS text messages have a certain number of characters, meaning any opportunity to reduce the number of characters used was useful. But not everyone knows every acronym out there.

Generally speaking, the older you are, the worse this problem becomes. New acronyms and shorthand are being invented all the time, with many making it into the dictionary. But any that don't pass into the mainstream can be confusing to the rest of the population. So try to use full words when possible, even if it takes longer to write out.

11 Never Message Someone When You're Tired or Inebriated

A text message sent when inebriated

You should never, ever message anyone when you're tired or inebriated. Essentially, if your rational mind is unlikely to be working at full capacity for any reason whatsoever, you should bar yourself from messaging people. Even if that means locking your phone away somewhere inaccessible.

Why? Because you may have lost that instinct not to offend, and/or lost your inhibitions. This means you may end up messaging that ex-girlfriend you think about occasionally, or end up sending the wrong message to the wrong person.

These are a few of the rules to keep in mind when messaging others. Not only will they make sure that you don't come across as rude, but they also could prevent you from landing in awkward situations.

Even though mobile phones have many good points, they can also cause problems. People sometimes pay more attention to their phones than the world around them. This can make them less aware and even cause accidents.

500 Words Essay on Impact Of Mobile Phones On Society

Introduction to mobile phones.

Mobile phones have changed the world. These small devices that we carry in our pockets allow us to talk to anyone, anywhere, at any time. They have become a part of our daily lives. Many people cannot imagine a day without their phone. This essay talks about how mobile phones affect society.

Communication Made Easy

The first big change that mobile phones brought is in the way we talk to each other. Before mobile phones, we had to use landline phones that were stuck in one place. Now, we can call or send a message to our friends and family no matter where we are. This has made staying in touch with loved ones much easier.

Entertainment in Our Hands

Our phones are not just for talking or getting information. They are also for fun. We can play games, listen to music, or watch videos on our phones. This means we can have entertainment with us all the time. This is nice when we are waiting for something or when we want to relax.

Work Goes Mobile

Phones have also changed the way we work. Many jobs now allow people to use their phones to do their work. This means that some people can work from anywhere. They do not have to be in an office. This can make work more flexible, but it can also mean that people are working more since they can always be reached.

Problems Caused by Mobile Phones

Even though mobile phones have many good points, they can also cause problems. For example, people can spend too much time on their phones and not enough time talking to people face to face. This can hurt relationships. Also, using phones too much can be bad for our health, like causing eye strain or bad posture.

In conclusion, mobile phones have a big impact on society. They make communication, getting information, working, and entertainment easier and better. They can also help keep us safe. But we must be careful not to let our phones take over our lives. We should remember to spend time with people in real life and not just on our phones. It is important to find a good balance.

What is smartphone addiction?

Causes and effects of smartphone and internet addiction, signs and symptoms of smartphone addiction, self-help tips for smartphone addiction, modify your smartphone use, step-by-step, treatment for smartphone and internet addiction, helping a child or teen with smartphone addiction, smartphone and internet addiction.

Worried about your phone or internet use? These tips can help you break free of the habit and better balance your life, online and off.

use of mobile essay

While a smartphone, tablet, or computer can be a hugely productive tool, compulsive use of these devices can interfere with work, school, and relationships. When you spend more time on social media or playing games than you do interacting with real people, or you can’t stop yourself from repeatedly checking texts, emails, or apps—even when it has negative consequences in your life—it may be time to reassess your technology use.

Smartphone addiction, sometimes colloquially known as “nomophobia” (fear of being without a mobile phone), is often fueled by an internet overuse problem or internet addiction disorder. After all, it’s rarely the phone or tablet itself that creates the compulsion, but rather the games, apps, and online worlds it connects us to.

Smartphone addiction can encompass a variety of impulse-control problems, including:

Virtual relationships. Addiction to social networking , dating apps, texting, and messaging can extend to the point where virtual, online friends become more important than real-life relationships. We’ve all seen the couples sitting together in a restaurant ignoring each other and engaging with their smartphones instead. While the internet can be a great place to meet new people, reconnect with old friends, or even start romantic relationships, online relationships are not a healthy substitute for real-life interactions. Online friendships can be appealing as they tend to exist in a bubble, not subject to the same demands or stresses as messy, real-world relationships. Compulsive use of dating apps can change your focus to short-term hookups instead of developing long-term relationships.

Information overload. Compulsive web surfing, watching videos, playing games, or checking news feeds can lead to lower productivity at work or school and isolate you for hours at a time. Compulsive use of the internet and smartphone apps can cause you to neglect other aspects of your life, from real-world relationships to hobbies and social pursuits.

Cybersex addiction. Compulsive use of internet pornography, sexting, nude-swapping, or adult messaging services can impact negatively on your real-life intimate relationships and overall emotional health. While online pornography and cybersex addictions are types of sexual addiction, the internet makes it more accessible, relatively anonymous, and very convenient. It’s easy to spend hours engaging in fantasies impossible in real life. Excessive use of dating apps that facilitate casual sex can make it more difficult to develop long-term intimate relationships or damage an existing relationship.

Online compulsions, such as gaming, gambling, stock trading, online shopping, or bidding on auction sites like eBay can often lead to financial and job-related problems. While gambling addiction has been a well-documented problem for years, the availability of internet gambling has made gambling far more accessible. Compulsive stock trading or online shopping can be just as financially and socially damaging. eBay addicts may wake up at strange hours in order to be online for the last remaining minutes of an auction. You may purchase things you don’t need and can’t afford just to experience the excitement of placing the winning bid.

While you can experience impulse-control problems with a laptop or desktop computer, the size and convenience of smartphones and tablets means that we can take them just about anywhere and gratify our compulsions at any time. In fact, most of us are rarely ever more than five feet from our smartphones. Like the use of drugs and alcohol, they can trigger the release of the brain chemical dopamine and alter your mood. You can also rapidly build up tolerance so that it takes more and more time in front of these screens to derive the same pleasurable reward.

Heavy smartphone use can often be symptomatic of other underlying problems, such as stress , anxiety, depression , or loneliness . At the same time, it can also exacerbate these problems. If you use your smartphone as a “security blanket” to relieve feelings of anxiety, loneliness, or awkwardness in social situations , for example, you’ll succeed only in cutting yourself off further from people around you. Staring at your phone will deny you the face-to-face interactions that can help to meaningfully connect you to others, alleviate anxiety, and boost your mood. In other words, the remedy you’re choosing for your anxiety (engaging with your smartphone), is actually making your anxiety worse.

Smartphone or internet addiction can also negatively impact your life by:

Increasing loneliness and depression. While it may seem that losing yourself online will temporarily make feelings such as loneliness, depression, and boredom evaporate into thin air, it can actually make you feel even worse. A 2014 study found a correlation between high social media usage and depression and anxiety. Users, especially teens, tend to compare themselves unfavorably with their peers on social media, promoting feelings of loneliness and depression.

Fueling anxiety. One researcher found that the mere presence of a phone in a work place tends to make people more anxious and perform poorly on given tasks. The heavier a person’s phone use, the greater the anxiety they experienced.

Increasing stress. Using a smartphone for work often means work bleeds into your home and personal life. You feel the pressure to always be on, never out of touch from work. This need to continually check and respond to email can contribute to higher stress levels and even burnout .

Exacerbating attention deficit disorders. The constant stream of messages and information from a smartphone can overwhelm the brain and make it impossible to focus attention on any one thing for more than a few minutes without feeling compelled to move on to something else.

Diminishing your ability to concentrate and think deeply or creatively. The persistent buzz, ping or beep of your smartphone can distract you from important tasks, slow your work, and interrupt those quiet moments that are so crucial to creativity and problem solving. Instead of ever being alone with our thoughts, we’re now always online and connected.

Disturbing your sleep. Excessive smartphone use can disrupt your sleep , which can have a serious impact on your overall mental health. It can impact your memory, affect your ability to think clearly, and reduce your cognitive and learning skills.

Encouraging self-absorption. A UK study found that people who spend a lot of time on social media are more likely to display negative personality traits such as narcissism . Snapping endless selfies, posting all your thoughts or details about your life can create an unhealthy self-centeredness, distancing you from real-life relationships and making it harder to cope with stress.

There is no specific amount of time spent on your phone, or the frequency you check for updates, or the number of messages you send or receive that indicates an addiction or overuse problem.

Spending a lot of time connected to your phone only becomes a problem when it absorbs so much of your time it causes you to neglect your face-to-face relationships, your work, school, hobbies, or other important things in your life. If you find yourself ignoring friends over lunch to read Facebook updates or compulsively checking your phone in while driving or during school lectures, then it’s time to reassess your smartphone use and strike a healthier balance in your life.

Warning signs of smartphone or internet overuse include:

Trouble completing tasks at work or home . Do you find laundry piling up and little food in the house for dinner because you’ve been busy chatting online, texting, or playing video games? Perhaps you find yourself working late more often because you can’t complete your work on time.

Isolation from family and friends . Is your social life suffering because of all the time you spend on your phone or other device? If you’re in a meeting or chatting with friends, do you lose track of what’s being said because you’re checking your phone? Have friends and family expressed concern about the amount of time you spend on your phone? Do you feel like no one in your “real” life—even your spouse—understands you like your online friends?

Concealing your smartphone use . Do you sneak off to a quiet place to use your phone? Do you hide your smartphone use or lie to your boss and family about the amount of time you spend online? Do you get irritated or cranky if your online time is interrupted?

Having a “fear of missing out” (or FOMO) . Do you hate to feel out of the loop or think you’re missing out on important news or information if you don’t check you phone regularly? Do you need to compulsively check social media because you’re anxious that others are having a better time, or leading a more exciting life than you? Do you get up at night to check your phone?

Feeling of dread, anxiety, or panic if you leave your smartphone at home , the battery runs down or the operating system crashes. Or do you feel phantom vibrations—you think your phone has vibrated but when you check, there are no new messages or updates?

Withdrawal symptoms from smartphone addiction

A common warning sign of smartphone or internet addiction is experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you try to cut back on your smartphone use. These may include:

  • Restlessness
  • Anger or irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sleep problems
  • Craving access to your smartphone or other device

There are a number of steps you can take to get your smartphone and internet use under control. While you can initiate many of these measures yourself, an addiction is hard to beat on your own, especially when temptation is always within easy reach. It can be all too easy to slip back into old patterns of usage. Look for outside support, whether it’s from family, friends, or a professional therapist .

To help you identify your problem areas, keep a log of when and how much you use your smartphone for non-work or non-essential activities. There are specific apps that can help with this, enabling you to track the time you spend on your phone. Are there times of day that you use your phone more? Are there other things you could be doing instead? The more you understand your smartphone use, the easier it will be to curb your habits and regain control of your time.

Recognize the triggers that make you reach for your phone. Is it when you’re lonely or bored? If you are struggling with depression, stress, or anxiety, for example, your excessive smartphone use might be a way to self-soothe rocky moods . Instead, find healthier and more effective ways of managing your moods, such as practicing relaxation techniques.

Understand the difference between interacting in-person and online. Human beings are social creatures. We’re not meant to be isolated or to rely on technology for human interaction. Socially interacting with another person face-to-face—making eye contact, responding to body language—can make you feel calm, safe, and understood, and quickly put the brakes on stress . Interacting through text, email or messaging bypasses these nonverbal cues so won’t have the same effect on your emotional well-being. Besides, online friends can’t hug you when a crisis hits, visit you when you’re sick, or celebrate a happy occasion with you.

Build your coping skills. Perhaps tweeting, texting or blogging is your way of coping with stress or anger. Or maybe you have trouble relating to others and find it easier to communicate with people online. Building skills in these areas will help you weather the stresses and strains of daily life without relying on your smartphone.

Recognize any underlying problems that may support your compulsive behavior. Have you had problems with alcohol or drugs in the past? Does anything about your smartphone use remind you of how you used to drink or use drugs to numb or distract yourself?

Strengthen your support network. Set aside dedicated time each week for friends and family. If you are shy, there are ways to overcome social awkwardness and make lasting friends without relying on social media or the internet. To find people with similar interests, try reaching out to colleagues at work, joining a sports team or book club, enrolling in an education class, or volunteering for a good cause. You’ll be able to interact with others like you, let relationships develop naturally, and form friendships that will enhance your life and strengthen your health.

For most people, getting control over their smartphone and internet use isn’t a case of quitting cold turkey. Think of it more like going on a diet. Just as you still need to eat, you probably still need to use your phone for work, school, or to stay in touch with friends. Your goal should be to cut back to more healthy levels of use.

  • Set goals for when you can use your smartphone. For example, you might schedule use for certain times of day, or you could reward yourself with a certain amount of time on your phone once you’ve completed a homework assignment or finished a chore, for instance.
  • Turn off your phone at certain times of the day, such as when you’re driving, in a meeting, at the gym, having dinner, or playing with your kids. Don’t take your phone with you to the bathroom.
  • Don’t bring your phone or tablet to bed. The blue light emitted by the screens can disrupt your sleep if used within two hours of bedtime. Turn devices off and leave them in another room overnight to charge. Instead of reading eBooks on your phone or tablet at night, pick up a book. You’ll not only sleep better but research shows you’ll also remember more of what you’ve read.
  • Replace your smartphone use with healthier activities. If you are bored and lonely, resisting the urge to use your smartphone can be very difficult. Have a plan for other ways to fill the time, such as meditating , reading a book, or chatting with friends in person.
  • Play the “phone stack” game. Spending time with other smartphone addicts? Play the “phone stack” game. When you’re having lunch, dinner, or drinks together, have everyone place their smartphones face down on the table. Even as the phones buzz and beep, no one is allowed to grab their device. If someone can’t resist checking their phone, that person has to pick up the check for everyone.
  • Remove social media apps from your phone so you can only check Facebook, Twitter and the like from your computer. And remember: what you see of others on social media is rarely an accurate reflection of their lives—people exaggerate the positive aspects of their lives, brushing over the doubts and disappointments that we all experience. Spending less time comparing yourself unfavorably to these stylized representations can help to boost your mood and sense of self-worth.
  • Limit checks. If you compulsively check your phone every few minutes, wean yourself off by limiting your checks to once every 15 minutes. Then once every 30 minutes, then once an hour. If you need help, there are apps that can automatically limit when you’re able to access your phone.
  • Curb your fear of missing out. Accept that by limiting your smartphone use, you’re likely going to miss out on certain invitations, breaking news, or new gossip. There is so much information available on the internet, it’s almost impossible to stay on top of everything, anyway. Accepting this can be liberating and help break your reliance on technology.

If you need more help to curb your smartphone or internet use, there are now specialist treatment centers that offer digital detox programs to help you disconnect from digital media. Individual and group therapy can also give you a tremendous boost in controlling your technology use.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy provides step-by-step ways to stop compulsive behaviors and change your perceptions about your smartphone and the internet. Therapy can also help you learn healthier ways of coping with uncomfortable emotions—such as stress, anxiety, or depression—that may be fueling your smartphone use.

Marriage or couples counseling. If excessive use of internet pornography or online affairs is affecting your relationship, counseling can help you work through these challenging issues and reconnect with your partner.

Group support. Organizations such as Internet Tech Addiction Anonymous (ITAA) and On-Line Gamers Anonymous offer online support and face-to-face meetings to curb excessive technology use. Of course, you need real-life people to benefit fully from any addiction support group. Online support groups can be helpful in finding sources of assistance, but it’s easy to use them as an excuse to spend even more time on your smartphone. Sex Addicts Anonymous can be a place to try if you’re having trouble with cybersex addiction.

Any parent who’s tried to drag a child or teen away from a smartphone or tablet knows how challenging it can be to separate kids from social media, messaging apps, or online games and videos. Youngsters lack the maturity to curb their smartphone use on their own, but simply confiscating the device can often backfire, creating anxiety and withdrawal symptoms in your child. Instead, there are plenty of other ways to help your child find a healthier balance:

Be a good role model. Children have a strong impulse to imitate, so it’s important you manage your own smartphone and internet use. It’s no good asking your child to unplug at the dinner table while you’re staring at your own phone or tablet. Don’t let your own smartphone use distract from parent-child interactions.

Use apps to monitor and limit your child’s smartphone use. There are a number of apps available that can limit your child’s data usage or restrict texting and web browsing to certain times of the day. Other apps can eliminate messaging capabilities while in motion, so you can prevent your teen using a smartphone while driving.

Create “phone-free” zones. Restrict the use of smartphones or tablets to a common area of the house where you can keep an eye on your child’s activity and limit time online. Ban phones from the dinner table and bedrooms and insist they’re turned off after a certain time at night.

Encourage other interests and social activities. Get your child away from screens by exposing them to other hobbies and activities, such as team sports, Scouts, and after-school clubs. Spend time as a family unplugged.

Talk to your child about underlying issues. Compulsive smartphone use can be the sign of deeper problems. Is your child having problems fitting in? Has there been a recent major change, like a move or divorce, which is causing stress? Is your child suffering with other issues at school or home?

Get help. Teenagers often rebel against their parents , but if they hear the same information from a different authority figure, they may be more inclined to listen. Try a sports coach, doctor, or respected family friend. Don’t be afraid to seek professional counseling if you are concerned about your child’s smartphone use.
