Tesla's New Video Unveils the Magic Behind Model Y Engineering

Tesla has unveiled a new video, taking viewers behind the scenes of their beloved Model Y. Guided by Lars Moravy, the Vice President of Vehicle Engineering at Tesla Motors, the video explains how Tesla pushes boundaries in car manufacturing, focusing on the key characteristics of this successful crossover SUV — from maximizing storage and utility to amping up off-road capabilities while retaining the unmistakable sporty allure of Tesla.

Challenging Tradition: Engineering from First Principles

The video highlights Tesla's 'first principles' approach to engineering. Tesla does not blindly adhere to conventional methods or past practices. Rather, everything is tested and proven, with decisions driven by the laws of physics and mechanics and not by tradition. The Model Y stands as a proud testament to this ideology, embodying performance and features that stem from what's physically possible and not from what's been done before.

Moravy draws attention to the Model Y’s rear casting and the innovative steps to overcome the usual challenges. Ordinarily, large aluminum pieces warp when heat-treated. But Tesla has created its alloy for the Model Y that exhibits high levels of strength and durability and, crucially, doesn't require heat treatment. This unique approach keeps the part straight, eliminating the need to machine the whole component — a move that saves energy and costs. Moreover, using this alloy, Tesla managed to replace around a hundred parts with just one or two — a testament to their inventive engineering.

Model Y: Designing a Car People Love

The ultimate goal, as the video underscores, is to create a product that people love, blending all the functionalities of a crossover into the Model Y. This includes copious cargo space, fold-flat seats for a wide-open area, and towing capability, among other features.

With the Model Y, Tesla aims not just to meet but exceed people's expectations of what an electric vehicle can be. Designed for those who enjoy dynamic driving, high visibility on the road, and extensive storage space, the Model Y offers an unparalleled driving experience.

Through this video, Tesla offers viewers a rare insight into their dedication to pushing boundaries and redefining vehicular capabilities. The Model Y isn't just a car; it's a celebration of engineering prowess and innovation. No wonder it's the best-selling vehicle in the world !

Tesla Files Patents for Wireless Charging the Robotaxi

tesla model y presentation video

Tesla has filed four patents for wireless charging. Previously, Tesla acquired the experience and skills of Wiferion’s engineering team in an acquisition in June 2023. Tesla quickly sold off the company but kept the company’s engineers. This was an acqui-hire, where large companies rapidly onboard top talent by purchasing a company for human capital, rather than products, services, or intellectual products.

Following the Wiferion acquisition, Tesla showed off a wireless charging mat several times and even confirmed they are working on wireless inductive home charging . We expected this to arrive with the Cybertruck , but now we hope to see more details at the upcoming Robotaxi reveal event in October, at the Warner Bro.’s studio in Hollywood .

Wireless Charging Patents

First patent.

The first of the four patents looks at temperature sensors and applications for wireless charging. Tesla intends to track the temperatures across both the wireless charging pad, as well as the inductive charging coils in the vehicle. The third patent details how they’re planning to use this in an innovative way.

tesla model y presentation video

Second Patent

The second patent is a shorting switch, which is designed to prevent or reduce leakage of energy to ground sources near the wireless charging mat. This shorting switch is used to create a short with the receiving side of the inductive charging, essentially making energy transfer faster and more efficient – while also reducing the amount of energy that is leaked out elsewhere. We’ll leave this one for the electrical engineers to explain in our forums.

Third Patent

The third patent is actually the wireless charging circuit itself, and how to manufacture it. This one is straightforward and explains how Tesla intends to design and build the prototype inductive wireless charging mats. Beyond the basic design, this document also details how Tesla intends to lay out the inductive charging coils and how it expects the entire assembly to function – which includes a small cable that runs to a wall-mounted energy source.

Fourth Patent

The final patent is for intelligently estimating and adapting to variations in wireless charging layouts and systems. This one is probably the most interesting of the four patents, as it involves adjusting the coils in the mat to dynamically account for the positioning of the vehicle, as well as responding to the information from the first patent – the temperature sensors.

Essentially, by varying the coil induction across the mat, Tesla intends to dynamically aim the wireless charger at different parts of the inductive coils in the vehicle, thereby reducing heat. This patent will also help Tesla to determine the adequate charge speed and other key information they may need to relay to the vehicle, or back to fleet management software.

Cybertruck Inductive Charging

While the Cybertruck never actually arrived with inductive charging, it was noted in the Service Manual to have 2 Inductive Charging Headers , so it is ready to be upgraded to have Inductive Charging support. We expect that Tesla will release this as a purchasable upgrade for the Cybertruck sometime in the future – likely as a package with the Inductive Charging Mat.

Robotaxi Inductive Charging

The Robotaxi will likely be the first of Tesla’s vehicles to feature inductive charging – which. makes sense given its autonomous nature. Plugging in a NACS charger will likely be fairly difficult to automate, and the 5-10% efficiency loss of wireless charging isn’t a huge deal. It’s possible Tesla chose this route due to cost, as having an automated NACS cable like the “snake” prototype we saw years ago could be costly.

Having a simple parking stall with an inductive mat on it, alongside all the tech and supplies needed to automatically clean and sanitize the Robotaxi makes far more sense. This means that a Robotaxi will be able to roll in, charge and clean itself, and then roll out to go pick up more customers. Tesla is planning a super-efficient system here that requires minimal intervention from real humans.

Essentially, by effectively managing the Robotaxi fleet, Tesla can offset the increased time that wireless charging would take, and also reduce the amount of waste energy by charging when energy is cheapest. While this could prevent Tesla from taking advantage of the sheer battery mass of a Robotaxi fleet – by selling power when it’s expensive and travel demand is low – this doesn’t make it impossible.

Smartphone manufacturers have demonstrated reverse wireless charging with the inductive charging coils already present in modern smartphones. We could see Tesla low-power bi-directional charging in the future too.

We’re looking forward to seeing Tesla unveil this at the upcoming Robotaxi event . It’ll be something special, for sure.

Tesla Adds Ability to Swipe Left and Right in Browser

tesla model y presentation video

Tesla has made a spate of improvements to its vehicle software recently, starting with the big Spring Update, and then the Summer Update more recently. While we see most of the updates mentioned in the release notes, Tesla often also adds smaller quality-of-life improvements along the way.

Browser Controls

When using the Tesla Browser in the vehicle, you can now swipe left and right to go back or forward a page in your browser history. When you start swiping on the screen, Tesla’s Chromium-based browser will now display an arrow that slides out from the left or right. The circular icon is initially white, meaning that the action won’t be executed, but if you continue moving to the left/right, the icon will eventually turn blue. The blue icon means that the action will be executed once you let go of the screen.

This is a simple quality-of-life improvement that makes using the built-in browser easier.

We’re happy to see updates like these come to the browser, whose last major feature was the full-screen button that was added in update 2024.14 .

Future Browser Improvements

While we’re on the topic, let’s look at some future Tesla web browser improvements we’d love to see.

Access to the Mic

Full access to the vehicle microphone isn’t allowed through the web browser right now. That means if you want to get into a Discord, Slack, or Teams call, you’ll only be able to listen – not speak. All of these apps fully function in the Tesla browser for sending messages, but are fairly limited for meetings.

Better Bookmarks

Tesla’s current bookmark system is simple and barebones. You can bookmark a page and give it a name. Once you visit a bookmarked page enough, it’ll show up as an icon in the center of the browser when you go to the homepage.

However, it's difficult to keep a larger set of bookmarks since there aren’t any organizational tools provided. A better bookmark system or the ability to sync bookmarks would be a welcomed feature.

Custom Homepage

Tesla’s current homepage in its browser is simply just a Tesla logo in black or white, depending on whether your car is in dark mode or not. A custom homepage that provides widgets with basic local news, stock information or other details would be fantastic. We’d ask for weather too, but the recent Summer update shows weather at the top of your screen.

If you’ve got more ideas for the fairly barebones Tesla web browser, let us know.

Tesla Model Y: The newest Tesla (for now)

Tesla Model Y is an all-electric compact SUV built on Tesla's third-generation vehicle platform.

Tesla Model Y

As the newest EV to hit roads for Tesla, the Model Y CUV continues to grow in popularity as a more compact and affordable version of the Model X. It also shares the same platform as the cheapest Tesla in the Model 3 , sharing much of the same EV DNA. Here is a background of how the Model Y came to be, along with a breakdown of everything you need to know before purchasing one of your own.

Table of contents

History of the model y, standard range rwd model y, how much does a tesla model y weigh, model y tow hitch, tesla model y vs model 3: how do they differ, how much does a tesla model y cost, how long does it take to charge a model y, cost to charge at a tesla supercharger, model y faq.

Even before the Model 3 made its official debut, Tesla and CEO Elon Musk were already teasing some early versions of the Model Y and its Falcon-Wing doors.

After several years of teasing the public, complete with vague references and silhouette images during shareholder meetings, Tesla finally announced its newest EV, the Model Y, on March 14, 2019.

Production began the following December at Tesla’s Fremont factory, and by March of 2020, the first Model Ys began delivering to customers.

While the initial production of the Model Y has taken place in Fremont, Tesla has made it clear that its future production will continue at its two new gigafactories – Giga Berlin, and Giga Texas . Both of which remain under construction

In the summer of 2020, Tesla revealed it would produce and sell its new Model Y in the Chinese market. Beginning in December of that year, Model Y production commenced at Giga Shanghai.

While the Model Y appears to more closely resemble the veteran Model X SUV because of its size and doors, it actually more closely matches the Model 3, sitting upon the same third-generation platform.

Here’s the latest Model Y news to get you up to speed with the newest of Tesla’s current EV fleet:

  • Tesla (TSLA) starts Model Y deliveries in Europe
  • Tesla opens orders across Europe for made-in-China Model Y with Sept. delivery
  • Elon Musk urges Tesla suppliers to accelerate in order to deliver next-gen Model Y at Gigafactory Berlin
  • Tesla launches cheaper RWD Model Y in China
  • Tesla increases the price of the base Model Y again

Performance specs

As a more affordable version of the Model X, and a roomier version of the Model 3, Tesla’s Model Y falls somewhere in between in terms of both pricing and performance.

As the newest Tesla model available, the Model Y was the first to feature Tesla’s heat pump in lieu of electric resistance for interior cabin heat and battery preconditioning. The heat pump has since been integrated into Tesla’s other models, along with other features like chrome delete trim.

Currently, the Model Y is available in two dual motor, AWD versions – Long Range and Performance. Both trims get their power from a 75 kWh battery pack.

The Long Range Model Y can travel an EPA-estimated 326 miles on a single charge, while reaching a top speed of 135 mph. All while traveling 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds.

Tesla’s Performance Model Y offers a smaller EPA range of 303 miles, but can hit a top speed of 155 mph and can travel 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

Recently, there were rumors about a 400 mile range Model Y after Tesla filed for new versions of the EV with the Chinese government. However, those rumors have been quite exaggerated .

Site default logo image

In January of 2021, Tesla briefly launched a  Standard Range RWD version of the Model Y  on its website configurator. This single motor option offered 244 miles of range, a top speed of 135 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds.

However, almost as quickly as it emerged, the Standard Range Model Y disappeared .  Electrek  later reported that this Standard Range Model Y would remain  available as an “off menu” item for customers who asked Tesla directly about it.

This was due to the fact that CEO Elon Musk was understandably not satisfied with its range. The future of the RWD Model Y remains quiet and uncertain, although  it recently received an official EPA rating  as one of the most efficient EVs in the world.

In July of 2021, Tesla’s website revealed the Standard Range RWD Model Y had in fact returned as an available option, but only in Hong Kong . In August, Tesla China began delivering the first Standard Range Model Y EVs to customers alongside a full ceremony in which they could pick up their keys and drive off in their new, decorated Tesla.

Weight isn’t usually something the average consumer takes into consideration when buying a vehicle, but for those extra savvy Tesla fans, every pound counts when you’re trying to reach maximum efficiency. Especially on an EV like the Model Y, which currently remains Tesla’s second largest vehicle behind the Model X.

Both available versions of the Tesla Model Y currently weigh in at 4,416 lbs. That’s 834 more lbs. than its platform counterpart Model 3 Standard Range Plus, and 351 lbs. more than the other two Model 3 trims.

Other features

In the summer of 2020, Elon Musk told the media that when the Model Y (eventually) sees production at Giga Berlin , it would have a radical redesign of how the EV was manufactured.

This led to Tesla’s unibody casting machine known as the Megacast or Gigapress, combining the front and rear portions of the frame by injecting molten aluminum into one single-cast design.

This unique casting process will take place when Giga Berlin eventually opens, and is already underway in Fremont. Furthermore, the Tesla team has already tested the unibody press at Giga Texas , and plans to utilize it when it opens later this year.

While a trailer hitch only comes standard on the Model X SUV, the Model Y is the second Tesla EV to come with the option as an available add-on.

We previously reported that Tesla’s Model 3 would soon be coming with a tow hitch option to match those same models in Europe, but we have yet to see it in the North America.

In the Model Y configurator on Tesla’s website, the tow hitch is currently available as an add-on for $1,000, and offers a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.

Seven seat interior

Much like its larger, older sibling in the Model X, the Model Y is only the second Tesla to offer seating for seven. Long before the Model Y ever saw deliveries, Tesla was promising a third-row, seven seat option to come.

Unfortunately, it would become a hyped feature that customers had to continually wait for following delay after delay.

By the time the first Model Ys began their initial deliveries in 2020, the third row seats were still not available. Musk later promised that deliveries would begin in early December of 2020.

December came and went without a seven seat Model Y, but Tesla eventually did add the third row option to its purchase page in 2021.

However, it is currently only available on the Long Range trim, and it leaves those third row passengers with very little headroom… and even less legroom.

While the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 share the same platform, there remains quite a bit of difference between the two in terms of dimensions. Here’s a detailed breakdown.

Compared to the Model 3, the Model Y is:

  • 2.2 inches longer
  • 2.8 inches wider in terms of body width. With mirrors extended, it’s 1.6 inches wider.  With mirrors folded, it’s 1.2 inches wider
  • 7.1 inches taller
  • .6 inches longer wheelbase
  • 1.4 inches more front overhang, .2 inches less rear overhang
  • 1.1 inches higher ground clearance
  • 2.2 inch wider track on base wheels, 2.6/3 inch wider track front/rear on 21″ wheels

In terms of interior dimensions, the Model Y has:

  • .7 inches more front headroom and 1.7in more rear headroom
  • .9 inches less front legroom and 5.3 inches more rear legroom
  • Shoulder room is virtually the same
  • .4 inches more front hip room and 1.8 inches less rear hip room
  • 53 cubic feet more rated cargo volume

When learning about the Model Y or any of the other models currently available, one of the first questions is always,  How much does this Tesla cost? And for good reason.

Prices vary depending on what trim you choose, plus a number of add-ons like the aforementioned tow hitch. To give you the full range of what you might pay for a new Model Y, we’re going to give you the high and low end of both variations.

Note: Tesla prices are perpetually fluctuating , but all prices are accurate at the time of this posting and do not include any destination fees, taxes, or  federal tax rebates .

The Long Range Model Y price starts at $54,990 and can be priced as high as $73,990 with all available add-ons. This includes red paint, white interior, 20″ Induction wheels, tow hitch, seven seats, and full self-driving (FSD) capabilities .

The Performance Model Y begins at $61,990 for the bare bones version, and can jump as high as $75,990 including the previously mentioned add-ons as well as 21″ Überturbine wheels.

Note – this version only comes with five seats.

Much like the Tesla Model Y pricing, several factors contribute to how quickly (or slowly) you can get your EV recharged and back on the road.

To begin, make sure you have a clear understanding of  EV charging standards and how they vary.

After that, you should be able to better understand the levels of charging, and what sort of times you can expect from each of them with your Tesla.

Charge times can and will vary, but here’s a breakdown of Tesla charge speeds:

  • AC Level 1(110-120V outlet at home): 20-40 hours
  • Level 2 (220-240V – Third party chargers/Tesla chargers/Tesla home charger): 8-12 hours
  • DC fast charger Level 3 (480+ volts – Third party chargers/Tesla Supercharger): 15-25 minutes

The Tesla Supercharger network remains the best choice for long road trips or when you need a quick charge to get to your destination. That being said, the Supercharger network’s massive direct current (DC) is not recommended for daily charging.

Tesla still recommends charging at home with Level 2 whenever possible.

To learn more about Tesla’s Supercharger network,  check out our detailed guide .

How much does it cost to charge a Tesla Model Y?

Again, there are a number of different factors that contribute to this price. This includes  what state you live in , the level of charging you’re connected to, and even what time of day it is.

By studying  average residential energy costs in the US  from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), we can estimate the approximate cost to charge at home on either a Level 1 or Level 2 AC charger.

Cost to charge at home

On its 74 kWh battery, a Tesla Model Y will cost approximately $12.35 on average to fully charge from 0-100% in the US. These numbers also account for an 85% charging efficiency.

In terms of mileage, a Model Y Long Range will cost about $0.038 per mile or $3.79 per 100 miles of range.

The Performance Model Y comes out to about $0.041 per mile, or $4.08 for 100 miles.

Currently, the average commercial cost of electricity in the US is $0.11 per kWh. Accounting for 95% charging efficiency, it will cost a Tesla Model Y owner roughly $8.68 to charge on a Supercharger or DCFC equivalent.

In terms of mileage, the Long Range Model Y costs approximately $0.027 per mile or $2.66 per 100 miles. The Performance Model Y costs about $0.029 per mile and $2.87 for 100 miles of range.

You can check out how much it costs to charge a Tesla in greater detail here . Especially if you’re wondering what charging efficiency is.

Certainly! However, there are a number of components to consider as you weigh whether it’s better to lease or buy. Luckily, we’ve already compiled all that information for you. How much is a Tesla lease? Everything you need to know

Unfortunately, no. As the newest Tesla, the Model Y has yet to see any long-term free Supercharging promotions. That being said, Tesla briefly offered a year of free Supercharging to new Model Y customers in late December as a push to hit its sales goal. You can see what Tesla models do qualify here .

As previously mentioned, the Tesla Model Y resembles the Model X as a smaller, more compact version of the SUV with the Falcon-Wing doors to match. However, in terms of dimensions and overall design, the Model Y actually more closely matches the Model 3 sedan. Check our our Tesla guide to see how each model stacks up side by side.

The Model Y remains the newest Tesla current available to consumers after debuting in 2020. That being said, Tesla has two more EVs confirmed in its production pipeline that will follow the Model Y and become the newest Teslas. Cybertruck is still slated to deliver in 2022, while the second generation Roadster is scheduled to enter production in 2023 .

If you’ve ever taken a road trip in a Tesla, you know it’s more than just a drive; it’s an experience. Our Teslas—whether it’s the Model S or Model X—have a fantastic infotainment system that makes our adventures all the more enjoyable. Yes, you can watch YouTube, Netflix, and other streaming services while driving , but it’s crucial to prioritize safety.

How to Watch Videos on Tesla While Driving: Safe and Legal Options Explained

But hey, imagine this: your Tesla cruising down the highway, and the passengers enjoying their favorite movies or shows. With the Tesla infotainment system or handy apps like Teslamirror, it’s super easy to kick back and relax while your car does the work. Now, let’s dive into the specifics and ensure everyone stays entertained and safe on our journey! 🚗💨

Legal Considerations

Watching videos while driving a Tesla brings up some serious legal considerations . 🚨 Each country and even each state can have different laws.

It’s illegal to operate the main touchscreen for video playback while driving in many places.

Countries and States

  • United States : Laws vary by state, but most prohibit video streaming for drivers.
  • Canada : The federal law mainly prohibits screen use while driving.
  • Europe : Similar restrictions, focusing primarily on the driver’s use.

We need to understand these regulations to avoid hefty fines or endangering ourselves and others. Here’s a glance at some rules:

California No screen devices visible to the driver
New York Similar restrictions apply

Safety is Key

Tesla’s screens should only be used when the car is parked 🅿️ or for passenger use while driving. Switching on the internet and accessing YouTube or Netflix is restricted in “Drive” mode. Even with FSD, watching videos isn’t allowed for the driver.

We should always prioritize safety. Let’s not forget about those traffic laws put in place for everyone’s well-being. Stay safe, folks! 🚗✨

Safety Concerns

Watching videos in a Tesla while driving can be fun, but it comes with risks. We must balance entertainment with safety to avoid accidents. Here are some things to keep in mind.

Distraction Risks

Driving requires full attention. Watching videos can lead to distractions. Even a momentary glance can be dangerous. Tesla’s Autopilot and Autosteer help with driving, but they are not perfect. We still need to keep our hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Distraction can lead to:

  • Delayed reaction times
  • Increased risk of collisions
  • Reduced awareness of surroundings

We must use features like Autopilot responsibly. Tesla’s safety features, like Automatic Emergency Braking and Collision Avoidance, can assist us, but they are not substitutes for our focus.

Safe Alternatives

For safer entertainment, consider these options:

Other methods include:

  • Hands-free options : Use voice commands to control videos without looking away.
  • Rear screens : Passengers can watch on rear screens or connected devices.
  • Breaks : Use park mode to watch videos during breaks.

While driving, we should prioritize safety. The combination of Autosteer, Sentry Mode, and Navigation can enhance our journey without compromising our well-being.

Available Software And Features

Tesla cars come with sophisticated features to keep us entertained even while parked. The infotainment system includes various options that bring video streaming and music to the forefront.

Tesla Theater

In our Teslas, the Tesla Theater is the go-to for video streaming. This feature is available on the touchscreen display as the “Theater” app, symbolized by a classic popcorn icon 🍿. Here, we can access Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and YouTube, among other services.

To use it, we first ensure our car is parked 🅿️. This feature is disabled when the car is moving for safety reasons. After tapping the Theater icon, we can log into our Netflix account or any other streaming service and start watching. The interface is smooth, offering seamless integration from browsing to playback.

Additionally, streaming videos through the Tesla Theater makes use of our car’s Wi-Fi to avoid heavy data usage. The large touchscreen display makes watching movies a delight, turning the car into a mini-cinema experience.

Bluetooth Connectivity

Next up is Bluetooth connectivity , which is essential for music streaming and hands-free calls. Our Tesla allows various Bluetooth applications to connect for a continuous entertainment experience.

Connecting Spotify, Apple Music, or our favorite podcast app is a breeze. We just go to the Bluetooth settings on the touchscreen, pair our device, and voila! We have access to our entire music library. This connectivity feature also lets us play audio from services not directly integrated into the infotainment system, offering even more versatility.

Voice commands can be used for changing tunes or navigating through playlists, letting us keep our hands on the wheel while enjoying endless music. The speakers are top-notch, creating an immersive audio experience that enhances every drive 🌟.

Happy streaming! 🚗💨

Step-By-Step Guide

This section will walk you through how to access Tesla Theater and connect your Tesla’s Bluetooth. These steps ensure you can watch videos safely and easily.

Accessing Tesla Theater

Accessing Tesla Theater is quite straightforward. First, ensure your Tesla has the latest software update installed for the best experience. If you haven’t done this, navigate to Settings > Software and check for updates.

  • Open the App Launcher: Tap the App Launcher icon located at the bottom of the touchscreen.
  • Select Tesla Theater: From the apps list, choose Tesla Theater .
  • Choose Your Video Service: Once inside, you’ll see options like YouTube , Netflix , and more. Tap YouTube to start streaming.

Remember, Tesla Theater works only when the car is in Park. If the car is in motion, the feature will not activate for safety reasons. This is crucial to ensure both driver and passenger safety.

Connecting To Bluetooth

Connecting your Tesla to Bluetooth is essential to stream audio smoothly while watching videos on Tesla Theater or through mirror apps like TeslaMirror .

  • Open Bluetooth Settings: Tap the Bluetooth icon on the top-right corner of the touchscreen.
  • Pair Your Device: Enable Bluetooth on your phone and select your Tesla from the list of available devices. Confirm the pairing by entering the code displayed on the car’s screen.
  • Adjust Audio Settings: Once connected, set your phone as the audio source. Navigate to Media > Bluetooth within the car’s menu to ensure sound plays through the Tesla sound system.

This pairing ensures a seamless audio experience, so there will be no interruptions while you enjoy your favorite content. And remember, using voice commands to control playback can add an extra layer of safety.

Tesla cuts US prices on its Model Y, S and X vehicles after a difficult week

The starting prices were reduced for the model y, s and x. earlier this week tesla announced layoffs and a recall of nearly 4,000 of its cybertrucks., by the associated press • published april 21, 2024 • updated on april 21, 2024 at 5:24 pm.

Tesla knocked $2,000 off the prices of three of its five models in the United States late Friday, another sign of the challenges facing the electric vehicle maker led by billionaire  Elon Musk.

The company cut the prices of the Model Y, a small SUV which is Tesla's most popular model and the top-selling electric vehicle in the U.S., and also of the Models X and S, its older and more expensive models. Prices for the Model 3 sedan and the Cybertruck stayed the same.

Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are

The cuts reduced the starting price for a Model Y to $42,990 and to $72,990 for a Model S and $77,990 for a Model X.

The move came the day after Tesla's stock tumbled below $150 per share, eliminating all gains made over the past year. The Austin, Texas, company's stock price has dropped about 40% so far this year amid falling sales and increased competition. Discounted sticker prices are a way to try to entice more car buyers.

Musk posted early Saturday on X, the social media platform known as Twitter before he acquired and renamed it, that the cost of an entry-level Tesla was as low as $29,490 once  a federal tax credit  and gas savings were factored in.

Industry analysts have been waiting for Tesla to introduce a small electric vehicle that would cost around $25,000, the Model 2. Media reports this month that Musk planned to scrap the project created more uncertainty over the company's direction, although Musk called them untrue.

Cramer's week ahead: Earnings from Tesla, Merck and Big Tech

The price cuts ended a long workweek at Tesla, which announced Monday that it was cutting 10% of its staff globally, about 14,000 jobs. The company also said it was  recalling nearly 4,000 of its 2024 Cybertrucks after discovering the accelerator pedal can get stuck, potentially causing the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally and increase the risk of a crash.

On Saturday, Musk confirmed he had postponed a planned weekend trip to India to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing “very heavy Tesla obligations.” He said on X that he looked forward to rescheduling the visit for later this year.

Tesla is scheduled to announce its first-quarter earnings on Tuesday.

The company reported earlier this month that its worldwide sales fell sharply from January through March as competition increased worldwide, electric vehicle sales growth slowed, and earlier price cuts failed to lure more buyers.

It was Tesla's first year-over-year quarterly sales decline in nearly four years.

Tesla ‘Actual Smart Summon’ Real-World Test: ‘80% Magical, 20% Awkward’

The feature that can bring your car to you without anyone behind the steering wheel is back. but is it any better.

Tesla

  • Tesla's Actual Smart Summon was released last week.
  • Compared to the old Smart Summon, which was canned after receiving negative reviews, the new system uses cameras instead of ultrasonic sensors.

Last week, Tesla started pushing a feature called “Actual Smart Summon” to its cars with software version 2024.26.20. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the second iteration of a system that was first released a few years ago , only to be removed because it wasn’t ready for prime time.

The old version used the electric cars’ ultrasonic sensors, but since new Tesla EVs don’t have ultrasonic sensors anymore , the feature had to be reworked. Now, the cheekily named “Actual Smart Summon” (ASS for short) uses the car’s cameras to figure out where to go and how to get to the owner.

Just like the first version, the owner has to press a virtual button on the Tesla smartphone app to convince the car to come to them. There are two modes of operation called “come to me” and “go to target,” which don’t really need an explanation. Additionally, there’s a so-called “Dumb Summon” mode which allows the owner to move the car forward or backward by simply pressing some arrows on the smartphone app.

More Stories Like This

But how does ASS perform in the real world? As it turns out, it’s much better than the version that was canned. First off, there’s a live feed in the app to see what the car sees.

Then, the system is much more confident in what it needs to do, even in tricky situations. The speed is limited to 6 miles per hour and there seems to be “a huge bias toward pedestrian safety,” according to Tesla enthusiast and avid driver assistance systems tester AI Drivr , who put Actual Smart Summon to the test in a variety of scenarios in the video embedded at the top of this page.

The old Smart Summon used to stop abruptly after 400 feet no matter what you did, whereas the new Actual Smart Summon seems perfectly comfortable driving much longer distances, as long as the owner stays inside the blue circle in the app. Even if the driver moves away from the initial location, the car will still figure out a way to get to the owner in real-time

Tesla Actual Smart Summon stuck while trying to back out of a parking space

Tesla Actual Smart Summon stuck while trying to back out of a parking space

With ASS, Teslas can even back out of parking spots, but as we mentioned last week, they still can’t park themselves . Instead, the vehicle simply pulls to the right, stops and puts on the hazards.

But it’s not perfect. In one instance during testing, the car was stuck for a few minutes when trying to back out of a parking spot. in another instance, it engaged the emergency braking because it thought it would run over a curb, even though there was plenty of space to pass safely.

The conclusion of the video is quite simple. While the old version was about “50% magical” and “50% awkward,” Actual Smart Summon is “80% magical” and “20% awkward.” But what do you think? Let us know in the comments.
