What is the “Prime Minister’s Fellowship for Doctoral Research”?

Prime Minister’s Fellowship for Doctoral Research scheme is a prestigious initiative of Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India towards the advancement of university research engagements in line with industry requirement. The scheme encourages full time PhD scholars to pursue research in “focus areas” identified by industries as well as of national priorities.

What is the aim of this scheme?

The aim of the scheme is to encourage and inspire promising young Indian Ph.D. researchers to pursue industry relevant research in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture & Medicine, build industry academia partnership for advancing R&D and boost research on industrially relevant subject areas.

What are the Key Features of the Fellowship?

In addition to attractive scholarship, the Prime Minister’s Fellowship emphasizes providing a unique and invigorating experience to selected fellows. It ensures the best national and international exposure for them and provides mentoring through industry and academic experts through the mechanism of annual review meetings. In addition, periodic mentorship sessions are also organized with the help of expert external agencies.

Which is the implementing agency of this scheme?

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) on behalf of SERB implement the scheme.

What are the eligibility criteria for applying/availing the Fellowship?

The applicant should be a full-time PhD scholar in any recognized Indian university/institute/research laboratory. The scholar’s PhD registration date should not be more than 14 months from the date of submission of application. The applicant should have a valid industry partner who should be ready to support the research project financially as well as provide guidance and mentorship. The mutually agreed topic of research, between the applicant and the supporting company, should be innovative, have practical relevance, and have industrial application. The selected applicant should be willing to work with/in the supporting company as and when required during the project period. The applicant should not draw any other fellowship after the selection.

What are the areas covered under this Fellowship?

Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Medicine

What is the nature of support for the Fellow?

Under this scheme, fulltime PhD scholars get double the JRF/SRF fellowship amount, as scholarship.

What are the Selection Parameters of the projects under the scheme?

The projects should be innovative and of high scientific merit; with discrete R&D as opposed to exploratory investigation. The proposed research project should have a high commercialization potential. The applicant, the academic guide, and the industry mentor should have a strong track record.

How can an applicant apply for this fellowship?

The applicant can apply for this fellowship through the website www.primeministerfellowshipscheme.in.

How does the online application work?

Candidates need to refer to Annexure I in the Call for Proposal document which is available on the home page of the portal www.primeministerfellowshipscheme.in. All the required documents and details needed to be given should be collected before filling the online application.

What is the timeline till which the application can be submitted? Will an additional hard copy, stamped / signed of the application required to be sent to CII?

The interested companies can evaluate the profile and contact the applicants if they find the proposal relevant.

How can I find relevant industry partners?

Candidates should talk to their research guides at the institute and find out about the relevant companies in that field. They can do their own research in and around them to find out the right companies and approach them. Candidates should also keep themselves abreast with the latest technologies, trends and companies working in their field. They should try to interact with industry people in their field as frequently as possible to trigger idea thrashing about a particular project.

If an applicant submits the form, can it be submitted again?

Candidates can review and re-review their forms any number of times before uploading them finally. Once uploaded, however, the form cannot be submitted again.

If I apply this year and am not able to get the scholarship this time, will I be allowed to apply next year?

Yes, you can apply as a fresh candidate with updated information, provided you satisfy all the eligibility conditions.

Will applicants get automated response to submission? Will somebody call from CII to confirm the receipt of application?

PhD Scholarship India 2024 [Scholarships from Government]

Kopal Srivastava Aug 28, 2024 1K Reads

After completing a master’s degree, you can pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). This is a big decision because it requires significant time and resources. One major challenge, especially for self-funded students, is the cost. A PhD can take 3-5 years and can be expensive without a scholarship.

To help, there are some popular PhD scholarships in India that offer substantial financial support. These scholarships can cover your expenses for studying in India or abroad, making it easier to establish your career in research.

What are PhD Scholarships?

A PhD scholarship provides funding to support a student pursuing a PhD or other doctorate.

Eligibility and selection criteria:

  • Merit-based scholarships: These are for academically excellent students who have strong qualifications and CVs.
  • Need-based scholarships: These support students facing challenges due to their background or personal circumstances, especially if they are from under-represented social or demographic groups at the PhD level.

Scholarships vs PhD Studentships

Some PhD funding awards are called studentships instead of scholarships.

Scholarships vs. Studentships:

  • Scholarships: Provide funding for a student to pursue a PhD.
  • Studentships: Fund a specific research project throughout the PhD duration.

For example, the UK's Research Councils offer studentships tied to advertised PhD opportunities or awarded based on proposed projects. The funding is directly linked to the project.

While the distinction between scholarships and studentships can be blurry, both aim to fund PhD studies.

University Scholarships

When looking for PhD funding, start with your university. Many research-intensive universities offer various funding options for postgraduate students.

  • Alumni discounts: These reduce tuition fees for graduates returning for postgraduate studies.
  • General scholarships: They can be merit-based or need-based, supporting eligible PhD students annually.
  • Travel and research grants: Available to cover costs like conference attendance or fieldwork, enhancing affordability during your PhD.

International Scholarships

Some PhD scholarships are personalized for international students who may not qualify for local public funding options like student loans or national studentships.

  • Government funding schemes: Countries offer specific competitions to attract talented international researchers. Examples include the UK's Commonwealth Scholarships, New Zealand's International Doctoral Research Scholarships, and Denmark's Danish Government Scholarships.
  • Exchange schemes: Collaborative programs between countries fund each other's citizens for PhD studies abroad. The US-UK Fulbright Scholarships are a notable example.
  • University awards: Many universities provide international scholarships as part of their funding options for PhD studies.

  • Understand the viewpoint of the funder: Find out why the organization supports PhD research and what characteristics they are looking for in candidates. Make your application specific to their objectives.
  • Verify the requirements for eligibility: Before applying, make sure you satisfy all eligibility conditions in order to save time on applications for scholarships you might not be eligible for.

Scholarship for Phd students in India – Scholarships for PhD applicants

PhD scholarships – A PhD is fairly considered the highest academic achievement in a field and owing to their high level of expertise in their chosen field, holders of a PhD degree earn the right to be referred to as a Doctor. Unless you wish your symptoms to be diagnosed as emblematic of the deeply problematic ontological hegemony of the west, however, they are not the kind of doctors you would run to in a case of a medical emergency. All jokes aside, though, only the most dedicated scholars ever reach that pinnacle of academic accomplishment – a doctorate.

Obtaining a PhD requires many years of dedication and hard work, and not to forget, years of college tuition. Without adequate financial support, it would be tough for academics to pursue a PhD. Thankfully, there are many scholarships for PhD available for students and applicants in India.

To help you get started, here is a list of some of the top scholarships for PhD applicants:

Description

Change lives and change the world with impactful PhD research co-funded by Flinders and CyberCX.

  • Receive a $33,990 per annum (indexed annually) scholarship tax-free for up to 3.5 years
  • Apply your research skills during an internship with CyberCX

Flinders University and CyberCX offer an Industry PhD Scholarship to undertake innovative research into Cybersecurity combating advanced persistent threats (Project 1) .

The College of Science and Engineering at Flinders University and CyberCX are collaborating on this research project to analyse advanced persistent threats (APT) tools and activities, investigate their capabilities, and assess whether they can be replicated to protect our networks and systems.

Bringing significant industry experience to the project, CyberCX is a well-respected and leading provider of professional cyber security and cloud services across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. With a workforce of over 1,300 professionals, CyberCX is a trusted partner to private and public sector organisations, assisting organisations in confidently managing cyber risk, responding to incidents and building resilience in an increasingly complex and challenging threat environment.

The College of Science and Engineering is also committed to creating a safer digital environment through cybersecurity research and has complementary research strengths in cybersecurity, securing critical infrastructure and research methodologies, and ensuring timely PhD completions.  Together, we are seeking innovative solutions to this challenging area of research through this PhD project.

This inspiring project involves:

  • Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are sophisticated cyber-attacks against the government and large organisations' networks and systems. These attacks, enacted over a prolonged period, aim to steal intellectual property, compromise sensitive information, sabotage critical infrastructure, and, in some cases, take over sites entirely. These types differ from traditional cyber-attacks because they are highly complex, targeted, and aim to infiltrate entire networks. The research will undertake an analysis of APT tools and activities and investigate the capabilities of APT tools to assess whether they can be replicated to protect our networks and systems. The research addresses Australia's need to expand cybersecurity skills and techniques and the nation’s ability to respond to and combat complex cyber threats.

The Flinders Industry PhD Scholarship also includes an internship of at least 60 full-time equivalent days, agreed to in written form within 18 months of candidature, undertaken and completed prior to completion of the PhD, during which you will be embedded with the Industry Partner team, developing your network, and gaining insight into the everyday research practices of an industry-leading/service driven organisation.

This Scholarship offers:

  • $33,990 (2024 full-time rate, indexed annually) per annum tax free, for up to 3.5 years
  • A 3-month industry internship allowing you to apply your research into practice during candidature
  • Access to academic and industry expertise through joint supervision
  • A supportive environment to learn leading-edge research methods and become an expert in your area
  • The opportunity to manage a complex research project and respond innovatively to challenges
  • A collaborative research community where you can enhance your skills and build your network to progress your research career

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Scholarship you will need:

  • to be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident; and
  • to have or able to apply for a National Police Criminal History Check; and
  • meet Flinders University PhD admission requirements – an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A or equivalent qualification (at least AQF Level 8), or evidence of equivalent research experience, such as refereed publications or significant experience as a lead researcher; and
  • Scholarship recipients are expected to take up their studies as soon as practicable within a timeframe specified by the Office of Graduate Research in consultation with the Industry Partner, up to maximum of 3 months from the time of acceptance of the scholarship.  In exceptional circumstances and with approval of the Industry Partner and the University, this time may be extended to 6 months.

It is desirable for applicants to also have:

  • Possess a degree in cybersecurity, computer science, information security, software engineering, information technology, or adjacent areas.
  • A desire to engage with the broader security community by publishing and presenting research outcomes.

Viral video: How US vlogger discovered PhD student's food cart in Chennai

A video of chennai's phd street food vendor asking a us food vlogger to 'google his name' has gone viral. here's the backstory..

Listen to Story

A video of a Chennai PhD student and his conversation with a US vlogger went viral

  • A Chennai PhD student who was featured in a US vlogger's video went viral
  • Vlogger Christopher Lewis found Rayan via Google Maps
  • Rayan's story of balancing studies and business impressed viewers online

A PhD student from Chennai unexpectedly found himself in the spotlight after he was featured in a video by US vlogger Christopher Lewis that went viral on social media.

In the video, the student, Rayan, not only discussed the food he was offering but also asked Lewis to check out his academic research online.

Since being posted online, the video has been shared by several users on social media.

Here's how the US vlogger found this PhD student:

Lewis, who was exploring the streets of Chennai, stumbled upon the student’s humble street food cart while using Google Maps to locate a popular eatery.

Lewis, intrigued by Rayan's Chicken 65 offering, struck up a conversation with him and was stunned to learn that he was not just a street food seller but also a PhD candidate in biotechnology.

The encounter, documented by Lewis, soon went viral when Rayan said, “Google my name, you’ll find my research articles online.”

“$100 Gift for Hard-working Student Selling Chicken 65 in Chennai, India,” the caption of the viral-video shared by Lewis reads.

Chris Lewis revealed that his original destination was the famous Buhari Hotel, renowned for inventing the iconic Chicken 65 dish back in 1965. The restaurant later introduced variations such as Chicken 78, Chicken 82, and Chicken 90, expanding its legacy in Tamil Nadu’s culinary history.

However, it was Rayan’s story that stole the show, as viewers were impressed by his grit and commitment to balancing academic pursuits with entrepreneurship.

“Wow. Doing his PhD and has his research papers out there while also having a side hustle to support himself,” a user said.

Another user added, “Chris Lewis thanks for lending support to Rayan, and Rayan, you are an amazing person pursuing PhD and working without any hesitation about your needs is simply superb.”
