The Nursing program provides a rich environment for postgraduate students with staff from a range of professional and disciplinary backgrounds including Stroke management, Wound management, Peri-operative care, Oncology, Obstetric & Gynecology, Neurology, Continence, Psychiatry, Cardiac Rehabilitation, and Neonatology & etc. that is relevant to the needs of healthcare professionals and nurses' career progression.

The master's by research degree equips students with a critical application of specialist knowledge and enables the development of advanced skills in carrying out sustainable and independent research.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by research degree offers students an opportunity to undertake a focused and critical consideration and to make informed judgements on complex issues of a particular topic with the aim of contributing to the development of knowledge in that field as well as embracing an innovative approach to undertaking and solving problems.

We aims to prepare scholars who will discover and extend scientific knowledge that advances the science and practice of nursing with the purposes to improve the quality of services and outcomes for patients and their families through studies concerned with individual clinical needs, how knowledge is translated into practice, service delivery, organization and the wider social and policy context of care.

  • What is a Doctor of Nursing (DN)? The DN is a one of two terminal doctoral degrees in the field of nursing. While its counterpart, the PhD, is more research-oriented, those who earn a DN have completed the highest level of nursing academic through course work -oriented designed. The program is for nurses to pursue their career pathway in clinical, education and research. This terminal degree for nurses will prepare them for their future challenging roles in healthcare delivery.
  • How do I qualify to join this DN program ? Requirement for joining this program is Master of Nursing , Master in Health Science or other health related qualification at level 7 Malaysian Qualification Framework. Other qualifications equivalent with Masters which is accepted by Senate.
  • What is the duration of the course? This is a 12-semesters course (4 years). A specific set of doctoral-level coursework required in all DN programs for two years , and two years of dissertation. This is a 4-year coursework and dissertation based program offered via the distance and open learning mode.
  • What are the requirements for International students to join this program? A minimum score of 500 in Test for English as a Foreign language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 5.0 in International English Language Testing System(IELTS)
  • What is total credit to complete the duration of the course? A total of 80 credits as approved by Malaysian Qualification Framework
  • What is the nomenclature of post graduate degree awarded after completion of DN? Doctoral degree according to the field of specialisation e.g DBA, DEd , DN
  • What is the impact of DN program to your career? Nurses with DN degree are in an important position to serve as leaders in the continuing articulation of the discipline, as well as contributors on multiple levels to the development of the knowledge base of nursing.

  • Is the program accredited? The program has been accredited and approved by MQA – The assessment of required accreditation of DN program no is MQA/FA 0839
  • What are the course subjects in DN program? DN curriculum coursework include subjects health care policy and politics , and evidence-based practice. Philosophy of science, nursing informatics , research methods and statistics and health economics , risk management and law and ethics in nursing. All DN students are required to fulfil 40 credits of course work and 40 credits of dissertation.The dissertation is meant to demonstrate students’ mastery of the theories and practices learned throughout the DN
  • What will be the career progression from entry into nursing and the DN? Multiple routes and mechanisms for career progression will be possible and ultimately decided by each educational institution. The proposed model allows for progression from the BS or MS or to the DN.
  • How many institutions currently offer the DN through online ? Currently Open University Malaysia is the only university in Malaysia offering the course via online.
  • How will the DN differ from the PhD in terms of curriculum content, research competencies, outcomes and roles occupied? The DN focuses on providing leadership for evidence-based practice. This requires competence in translating research in practice, evaluating evidence, applying research in decision-making, and implementing viable clinical innovations to change practice. Considerable emphasis is placed on a population perspective, how to obtain assessment data on populations or cohorts, how to use data to make programmatic decisions, and program evaluation.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing programme introduces the novel niche in nursing research activities that will involve various nursing fields. This programme would facilitate the enrolment of students for Master Degree holders who intend to pursue research at a higher degree level.  

Programme Description

This research-focused doctoral programme will promote the development of a cognitive style that emphasizes abstract thinking and critical analysis of the research findings for building knowledge that advances culturally competent nursing and nursing education. The programme aims to inculcate the Islamic knowledge and value in nursing art and science for the nature and future of humankind. The fundamental concern is to promote human wellbeing at an individual, local and global level within a sustainable environment. As such, this program is different from other interdisciplinary educational initiatives in that its curriculum is purposely designed rather than simply an amalgamation of existing disciplines.  

Duration of the study: 3 years full time or 4 years part-time programme (normal progression)

Entry Requirements

·     A relevant Master’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 or equivalent from IIUM or any other accredited institution of higher learning. 

·  Applications from candidates with other certificates that are recognized as equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Nursing or relevant qualifications that are recognized by the Senate of the University. 

·       Candidates must demonstrate a good command of the English Language. Our English language requirement is:

  • Evaluation of research proposal. Candidates/ students are required to present a research proposal for evaluation purposes within the duration specified by the University, failing which students may be given unsatisfactory (US) status.
  • Semester evaluation by the supervisor (Progress report)
  • Thesis examination by the internal and external examiner
  • Oral defense of thesis to a Panel for Viva Examiners

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Faculty of Health Sciences offers a balanced of study and research to graduate students who intended to pursue their study at Masters and Doctor of Philosophy levels. As a leader in teaching, learning, research, and innovation in the field of Health Sciences, we offer comprehensive postgraduate study packages through 23 undergraduate and doctoral programs.

All graduate courses developed are to meet the needs of industry and professional bodies. FSK has close relations with industry, government bodies, and various related institutions.The programs that were developed are also led and delivered by expert and internationally recognized academic staff. Students also have the opportunity to work with renowned FSK researchers. FSK also encourages multidisciplinary research and has innovative potential that is recognized in Malaysia as well as internationally.

LIFE AT THE FACULTY

The Faculty of Health Sciences in UKM offer postgraduate programmes such as Masters and Doctor of Philosophy throughout the year. In the first semester, all postgraduate students will be required to register for a statistic course and for international students they have to pass a Bahasa Malaysia course. The Faculty of Health Sciences is renowned for its numerous research opportunities, up to date programmes, and various student-led activities. Students will be exposed to the tight-knit health campus members, with opportunities to connect with peers from other health background programs. The campus is located strategically in the heart of Kuala Lumpur which offers students an opportunity to experience life in the capital city of Malaysia. Various facilities including the library, cafeterias and student lounges are available for students to study, to have discussion sessions with their peers or to have a break in between lectures.  Student accommodation is located near Taman Tasik Tititwangsa, an urban recreational park spreading across an area of 95 hectares with 57 hectares of lake. Students will able relax or exercise at the park if they require a change of scenery.

Programme Requirement

A person who intends to apply for a doctoral programme should have the following qualifications:

1. Master’s Degree from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or have accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or an institution with accreditation as prescribed by a programme;

2. Other qualifications equivalent to a masters degree or other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or

3. Student currently pursuing full time master’s programme under sub regulation 6 (a) at the University and recommended by the Faculty’s/ Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee for status conversion to a doctoral programme with approval from the Dean/ Director; or

4. Bachelor Degree with distinction from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to what is prescribed by the Faculty/ Institute and approval by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or with accreditation recognised by a foreign Accreditation Board

5. Any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or

6. Fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable); and

7. Fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)

a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or

b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.

a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;

b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or

c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.

Department of Nursing Science was first established in 1993 as a Nursing Unit under the Department of Allied Health Sciences. It was the first nursing unit to recognize the importance of bacculaurate education in nursing and became the pioneer in the transition in the nursing education from a diploma to a graduate program, Bacherlor of Nursing Science in Malaysia. Ever since its information the unit has been involved in teaching undergraduate courses leading to Bachelor in Nursing.

The Unit was established as a clinical department: Department of Nursing Science in Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya on the 1st July 2007.

The Vision of the Department is to be the pioneer in producing Nursing leaders to meet the country’s aspiration and bring changes in the healthcare system and nursing profession. With this vision we hope to produce nursing graduates with research culture and practice evidence based nursing. Upon completion, graduates are expected to practice nursing knowledge critically and ethically by applying scientific nursing foundation in health care delivery.

The Vision of the Department is to be a center of excellence in nursing education by producing registered nurses that are competent, safe, has good moral values and critical thinking ability, caring and interacts with client, family and community in providing care in various health services in the country. The Bachelor of Nursing Sciences programme is offered by the Department of Nursing Sciences, Faculty of Medicine. All the staff supervises and teaches students that are undergoing the undergraduate or postgraduate nursing program when students are posted to clinical areas such as maternity wards, critical care areas, medical wards, surgical wards, paediatrics, operation theatre etc. The staff also participates in clinical work whenever time and opportunities permit.

The Department is now looking forward to having the Doctorate in Nursing in Clinical Specialization to offer postgraduate studies in specialization (Educational and Management).

What are the postgraduate programmes in Health Professions Education offered at IMU?

There are five programmes offered in Postgraduate Programmes in Health Professions Education:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Health Professions Education (PGCHPE)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Health Professions Education (ODL) (PGCHPEO)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education (PGDHPE)
  • Master in Health Professions Education (MHPE)

How is this programme conducted?

PhD in Health Professions Education is research-based and the degree will be awarded by the IMU on the successful completion of a dissertation. The examination is by assessment of the dissertation, the research on which it is based and a viva voce.

What is the programme content?

The programme content can be referred to the programme structure.

What is the duration of each programme on full-time basis?

  • Minimum of 3 years (6 semesters)
  • Maximum of 5 years (10 semesters)

What is the duration of each programme on part-time basis?

  • Minimum of 4 years (8 semesters)
  • Maximum of 6 years (12 semesters)

How are supervisors selected?

The selection of supervisor(s) will depend very much on the research area and be based on mutual agreement between both parties. The principal supervisor must be engaged within IMU whereas a co-supervisor can be from any established institution. All supervisors are subject to the credentialling guidelines of IMU.

What are the areas of research available at the IMU?

The areas of expertise of the IMU faculty are as follows: IMU academic staff members who supervise the research candidates have well-established reputations nationally and internationally in their areas of expertise. The areas of research include but not limited to:

When Do I Apply?

What are the admission procedures.

  • Applications for admission are accepted continuously throughout the year.
  • An interview with the faculty is required and is part of the evaluation process.
  • The completed application and all supporting materials (transcripts, research proposal) must be on file before the application can be processed and evaluated.
  • Successful applicants are notified of their acceptance by letter.

What is Nursing about?

Nursing is a profession within the healthcare sector focused on the care of individuals. A nurse is always projected with an image of a care provider.

It is not easy to be a nurse as being a professional nurse requires a lot of knowledge in the medical field and also many soft skills to deal with patients and their families.

To be a professional nurse, you can earn your qualification by studying a diploma or a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

In a typical nursing course, you will learn about nursing fundamentals, communication, primary health care, psychology, nursing care for various types of patients and other subjects which are important to provide the best health care support to patients.

As nursing is a specialised profession that focuses on caring and educating within the healthcare system, you will expect to gain your knowledge as a nurse not only through these subjects but also through hands-on practice in any healthcare setting.

What are the major fields in Nursing?

There are so many specialities and career path options and each of them has their own challenges and responsibilities. Here are some which are quite popular: 

1. Children’s Nurse As a children’s nurse, you will be involved in everything from nursing a sick newborn to a sick adolescent by providing care and support needed by the patients.

Children’s nurses are typically employed by hospitals, nursing agencies, and health centres to provide care for infants, adolescents, and children with a range of medical needs.  

2. Registered nurse A registered nurse (RN) is a fully qualified nurse who is licensed to practice and offer healthcare services . An RN works in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, outpatient facilities and dialysis centres. An RN with advanced education/certification may be responsible to perform patient diagnosis and case management.

3. Labour and Delivery Nurse Labour and delivery nurses bring new lives into this world by helping to deliver healthy babies and get moms through the process safely . The primary responsibilities of a labour and delivery nurse range from monitoring baby’s and mother’s vital signs during labour to coaching new mothers throughout the delivery .

4. Staff Nurse A staff nurse is a hospital nurse whose rank is slightly below that of a charge nurse . They are responsible for assessing a patient’s condition and administer medications and injections . They are basically the first person you’ll come in contact with when you visit a hospital or a clinic.

What are the important skills I need in this field?

1. Detail Orientation As a nurse is responsible for patients’ health and well being after treatment, and is involved in their recovery process from administering medication to their post-hospital treatment, a nurse needs to pay attention to all the details so that the patients and their families are well taken care of. 

2. Compassion Compassion is an essential component of nursing care. They are always on the front line dealing with patients and their families, thus it is good for a nurse to be compassionate by providing emotional support during critical times of the patient’s treatment and recovery. 

3. Time management  No matter which field you are in, time management skills are a must-have to keep your work-life balance. Managing your time well can help you improve in your career while keeping your personal life balanced too. 

Time management skills include a variety of skills that help you to manage your time, including organisation, prioritisation, goal-setting, planning, delegation and stress management. 

4. Communication Communication is a skill you can’t miss as you will be the vital link between the patient and the doctor. On top of that, be sure to keep your emotions well-managed when communicating and dealing with patients and their families as they might be difficult to handle sometimes. 

What are the entry requirements and qualifications?

Every institution has different requirements for admission into a Nursing programme and the entry requirements are different for different levels of studies too. Generally, the requirements to study Nursing in Malaysia are:

Foundation/Diploma: 

  • SPM/O-level: min. 5 credits (including BM, Mathematics, 1 Science)

Bachelor’s Degree: 

  • Diploma in Nursing or its equivalent
  • STPM: min. CGPA 2.5
  • A-level: min. 3C

Master’s Degree

  • A relevant degree qualification

How long will I be studying in this programme?

The duration of study in Nursing programmes is different depending on your level of study. Below is the duration of the programme listed according to their study levels:

Foundation/Diploma

1 - 3 years

Bachelor’s Degree

3 - 4 years

Master’s Degree

2 - 2.5 years

How much does it cost to study Nursing?

The cost of studying Nursing in Malaysia is different for every institution but the fees are estimated to be around the cost as the table below:

It is a university specialising in medicine, health sciences and complementary medicine programmes, and it’s comprising of five schools in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, having campuses in Bukit Jalil, Batu Pahat, Seremban and Kluang. 

4. AIMST University

AIMST University is registered with the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Malaysia, as a tertiary educational institute under Sections 38 and 39 of the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act of 1996. It formally began its operations on 30 October 2001, coinciding with its registration with the Department of Private Education under the Ministry of Higher Education. 

5. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

Universiti Sains Malaysia is the first university in Malaysia to be selected by the Malaysian government to participate in the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX), a fast-track programme that helps tertiary institutions achieve world-class status.
