There are no hard rules regarding the way cover letters should be written. However, following a simple structure can help to guide you through the process.

We find this six-step process works best:

1. Introduction

2. Overview of knowledge and expertise

3. Key selling points

5. key skills, 6. polite ending and call to action.

As you can see, when broken down into a six-step process, writing a cover letter doesn’t seem so daunting. However, there is plenty of work to be done to ensure you prepare a cover letter that makes an impact on recruiters.

Let’s look at these five steps in more detail.

Start your cover letter with a brief, professional introduction. Explain your interest in the role and tell the reader why you are writing the letter.

2. Overview of expertise, knowledge and experience

Provide a brief summary of yourself, touching on your areas of expertise, experiences and knowledge. Keep this part short and to-the-point.

3. Key Selling points

This part of your cover letter is where you highlight your strongest selling points. Draw on your greatest strengths to convince the reader that you’re the perfect candidate for the job.

Have you got multiple years’ business class flight attendant experience? If so, focus on that here. Have you been recognised for improving the passenger experience? If so, focus on that here.

Skills for Cabin Crew Cover Letter

What are the most important skills to include on a cabin crew cover letter? Here, we detail five of the most valued skills for flight attendants, as well as how to show them on your cover letter.

However, remember your cover letter should be tailored to you and your experiences. You should identify your most valuable skills and showcase them in a way that sells you to recruiters.

If your skill set includes these skills, ensure to follow our advice to demonstrate them on your cabin crew cover letter.

1. Customer Service

Cabin crew jobs are primarily about optimising the passenger experience while maintaining their safety. Excellent customer service is vital in achieving this.

On your cover letter, articulate your customer experience skills. Show that you go the extra mile to deliver outstanding customer service and ensure to convey your customer-driven approach to tasks.

2. Communication

As with most jobs, communication is a vital skill for flight attendants. Whether it be engaging with passengers or colleagues, strong communication is key to ensuring the smooth-running of flights.

A great way of showing off your communication skills on your cover letter is to describe achievements and successes that came about as a result of your communication skills.

3. Adaptability

As a member of cabin crews, you’ll always be on the move, landing in different countries and working with new colleagues regularly. As such, flight attendants need to be adaptable.

To demonstrate your adaptability on your cover letter, show that you’re dynamic and capable of acclimatising to change. Write about times you were receptive to change and modified your behaviour to accommodate change.

Other ways of showing your adaptability include writing about times you learned new skills to perform new tasks and developed new solutions to problems.

4. Professionalism

Flight attendants are usually seen as the face of airlines. For this reason, cabin crew members must be able to maintain a high level of professionalism at all times.

To covey your professionalism on your cover letter, draw attention to times you demonstrated professionalism while operating in challenging environments.

5. Teamwork

In order to meet objectives and ensure flights run efficiently, a good degree of effective teamwork is essential among cabin crew members.

Highlight times that you have demonstrated your teamworking qualities. This may involve activities outside of employment. For example, do you take part in sporting events? Did you work in groups at university?

These kind of activities enable you to provide fantastic examples that demonstrate your teamworking skills.

When writing your cabin crew cover letter, it's important to conduct some research into the airline you are applying to work for. This is because you need to understand the airline’s values and organisational culture.

When you understand this information, you can then explain how you are aligned with the airline’s values and culture.

As an example, let’s take a look at the values and culture of Emirates.

This was summed up by the airline’s president, Tim Clark, in an interview with Airlines IATA : ‘The success of Emirates is the result of our corporate culture of innovation and a pioneering spirit, combined with a ‘make it happen’ attitude that is shared throughout the organization at all levels. Working with bright, talented people who are not afraid to take calculated risks makes my job easy.’

So, what are the key takeaways from this in terms of Emirates’ values and culture?

Well, we now know that the airline values innovation, a pioneering spirit, determination, talent and calculated risk-taking.

So, if you were preparing a cover letter for Emirates, you should convey how you meet these values. This is, of course, assuming you do in fact meet these values. We would never encourage anyone to lie on their cover letter for any reason whatsoever.

Honesty is always the best policy when approaching job applications.

Another great aspect of research is that is shows recruiters you’re genuinely interested in their airline. At least interested enough to learn about the company.

Take your research a step further and find out what the airline’s objectives are for the future. Learn about their market position. If you can mention any of this in your cover letter, without coming across as pretentious, you’ll convince the recruiter that you have a sincere interest in joining the airline.

How to Write a Cabin Crew Cover Letter With No Experience

If you have no cabin crew experience, you may be wondering how to complete the impossible task of writing a strong cover letter for flight attendant positions.

The truth is, it’s not that difficult.

Customer service experience is the one of the most important experiences for cabin crew jobs. And customer service experience isn’t exclusive to flight attendants .

While customer service experience obtained in the air may be valued more than customer service experience obtained on ground, both use the same principles to provide customers with an excellent service.

So, if possible, make your customer service skills the focus of your cover letter, whether you acquired the experience in air or on the ground.

If you don’t have any customer service experience, identify your transferable skills. You might not have experience supporting customers, but you will most likely have experience supporting people. Draw attention to your people skills, communication skills and how you’re adept at helping people.

It's also important to be prepared to demonstrate your relevant experience in your cabin crew job interview. Check out our 20 most common cabin crew job interview questions and how to answer them .

Here is an example cover letter for a flight attendant who has no prior cabin crew experience.

Cabin Crew Cover Letter Example - No Experience

Cabin Crew Cover Letter Example - No Experience

State that you’re prepared to train

With no cabin crew experience, training is a big factor in the future of your flight attendant career. For this reason, it’s important to focus to any flight attendant training you have undertaken.

If you haven’t yet completed any flight attendant training, get cracking on some training courses. Research courses that cover the basics of cabin crew roles and identify the perfect course for you.

It’s also beneficial to complete cabin crew job interview training, as well as training for the general recruitment process, such as training for open days.

How to Professionally Format Your Cabin Crew Cover Letter

Line spacing.

This is a very important aspect of cover letter writing.

To ensure your cover letter is professional and easy-to-read, you must add line spacing between paragraphs.

Cover letters that don’t use line spacing often appear as one huge block of text. Most recruiters won’t even read these letters as they make for such a poor reading experience, so make sure to utilise Microsoft Word’s line spacing feature.

To add spacing to your cover letter, highlight the text, click ‘Layout’, then add 8 pt. spacing in the ‘After’ section.

This will ensure your paragraphs are easily distinguished from each other. It will also optimise your recruiter’s reading experience, which can only be a positive thing!

Ideally, you should be aiming for margin sizes of between 1.7 cm (0.66”) and 2.2 cm (0.86”). Of course, you can widen or narrow the margins further in line with the amount of content you do or don’t have to include. But try not to make them too wide or too narrow in order to ensure your letter is professional in appearance.

Fonts and font sizes

Use common fonts that readers have become accustomed to. These include Times New Roman, Garamond and Calibri.

Don’t be creative with your fonts. At best your cover letter will look unprofessional. At worst it will be too difficult to read.

Font sizes should be between 11 pt. and 12 pt. for most fonts, including Times New Roman, Calibri and Garamond. Make sure your text is neither too small or too large.

Job Application Follow Up

A week or two after applying for the job, it’s advisable to send a job application follow up letter. Follow up letters thank the hiring manager for their time, reinforce what makes you a unique candidate and reiterate your interest in the role.

Keep your follow up letter short and concise. Don’t go into too much detail and try to avoid a pestering tone in your cover letter.

You may think of follow up letter as a bit pushy. However, they are a professional way of recapping on your suitability for the role and demonstrating you’re enthusiasm.

Further Tips

Accompany your cover letter with an effective cv.

Your cover letter should be accompanied with a powerful CV. Without a strong cabin crew CV, even a great cover letter will struggle to get you results in the job market.

To learn how to write an effective flight attendant CV, take a look at our step-by-step cabin crew CV writing guide , which includes flight attendant CV examples.

Or view 15 of our CV examples and templates , which you can use today to maximise your job search.

Give your document a professional title

When saving your cover letter in Microsoft Word – or whichever word processor you are using – make sure to give it a simple, professional title. Something like ‘Cover Letter’ is appropriate.

Avoid unprofessional titles such as ‘coverletter023432’. When recruiters see such titles on documents, they may instantly form an opinion of you as an unprofessional candidate.

Emirates Cabin Crew CV layout and format

First impressions count, so a sloppy, disorganised CV may cause your CV to be overlooked..

Instead, perfect the format and structure of your CV by working to a clear logical structure and applying some simple formatting tricks to ease readability.

Don’t underestimate the importance of this step; if your CV lacks readability, your written content won’t even be seen.

How to write a CV

CV formatting tips

  • Length: Whether you’ve got one year or three decades of experience, your CV should never be more than two sides of A4. Recruiters are busy people who’re often juggling numerous roles and tasks, so they don’t have time to read lengthy applications. If you’re a recent graduate or don’t have much industry experience, one side of A4 is fine.
  • Readability : Make sure your CV is easy to read and looks professional by applying some simple formatting tricks. Bullet points are great for making large paragraphs more digestible, while formatting your headings with bold or coloured text will help the reader to find the information they need, with speed.
  • Design: While it’s okay to add your own spin to your CV, avoid overdoing the design. If you go for something elaborate, you might end up frustrating recruiters who, above anything, value simplicity and clarity.
  • Avoid photos: If your CV has photos , images or profile pictures, hit the delete button. They’re not needed and won’t add any value to your applications.

Quick tip: Formatting your CV to look professional can be difficult and time-consuming when using Microsoft Word or Google Docs. If you want to create an attractive CV quickly, try our quick-and-easy CV Builder and use one of their eye-catching professional CV templates.

CV formatting tips

CV structure

For easy reading, write your CV to the following CV structure:

  • Contact details – Make it easy for recruiters to get in touch with you by listing your contact details at the top of your CV.
  • Profile – A short and snappy summary of your experience and skills, showcasing what makes you a good fit for the position.
  • Work experience / career history – Note down all your work history, with your current position first, then working backwards.
  • Education – A short list of your academic background and professional/vocational qualifications.
  • Interest and hobbies – This is an optional section, which you can use to highlight any relevant hobbies or interests.

Now I’ll tell you exactly what you should include in each CV section.

CV Contact Details

Contact details

Make it easy for recruiters to get in touch, by heading your CV with your contact details.

There’s no need for excessive details – just list the basics:

  • Mobile number
  • Email address – Use a professional address with no nicknames.
  • Location – Just write your general location, such as ‘London’ or ‘Cardiff’ – there’s no need to put your full address.
  • LinkedIn profile or portfolio URL

Emirates Cabin Crew CV Profile

Grab the reader’s attention by kick-starting your CV with a powerful profile (or personal statement , if you’re a junior applicant).

This is a short introduction paragraph which summarises your skills, knowledge and experience.

It should paint you as the perfect match for the job description and entice recruiters to read through the rest of your CV.

CV profile

Tips for creating an strong CV profile:

  • Keep it concise: Aim for a short, snappy paragraph of 3-5 lines. This is just enough room to showcase why you’d make the perfect hire, without going into excessive detail and overwhelming busy recruiters.
  • Tailor it: Recruiters can spot a generic, mass-produced CV at a glance – and they certainly won’t be impressed! Before you write your profile (and CV as a whole), read through the job advert and make a list of any skills, knowledge and experience required. You should then incorporate your findings throughout your profile and the rest of your CV.
  • Don’t add an objective: Leave your career objectives or goals out of your profile. You only have limited space to work with, so they’re best suited to your cover letter .
  • Avoid cliches: Clichés like “ blue-sky thinker with a go-getter attitude” might sound impressive to you, but they don’t actually tell the recruiter much about you. Concentrate on highlighting hard facts and skills, as recruiters are more likely to take these on board.

Example CV profile for Emirates Cabin Crew

What to include in your emirates cabin crew cv profile.

  • Summary of experience: To give employers an idea of your capabilities, show them your track record by giving an overview of the types of companies you have worked for in the past and the roles you have carried out for previous employers – but keep it high level and save the details for your experience section.
  • Relevant skills: Employers need to know what skills you can bring to their organisation, and ideally they want to see skills that match their job vacancy. So, research your target roles thoroughly and add the most important Emirates Cabin Crew skills to your profile.
  • Essential qualifications: If the jobs you are applying to require candidates to have certain qualifications, then you must add them in your profile to ensure they are seen by hiring managers.

Quick tip: Struggling to write a powerful profile? Choose from hundreds of pre-written profiles across all industries, and add one to your CV with one click in our quick-and-easy CV Builder . All written by recruitment experts and easily tailored to suit your unique skillset.

Core skills section

In addition to your CV profile, your core skills section provides an easily digestible snapshot of your skills – perfect for grabbing the attention of busy hiring managers.

As Emirates Cabin Crew jobs might receive a huge pile of applications, this is a great way to stand out and show off your suitability for the role.

It should be made up of 2-3 columns of bullet points and be made up of skills that are highly relevant to the jobs you are targeting.

Core skills section CV

Top skills for your Emirates Cabin Crew CV

In-flight services – offering meals, snacks, beverages and duty-free shopping during flights for the convenience of the passengers.

Pre-flight checks – completing extensive checks of the cabin in preparation for boarding and take off.

Emergency procedures – completing set procedures in the event of an emergency, including following instructions for an emergency landing and preparing and evacuating the cabin.

Aircraft safety standards – ensuring each aircraft meets all regulatory safety standards and highlighting any issues to the lead member of the team and aircraft captain.

POS systems and cash handling – processing cash and card payments during the flight.

Quick tip: Our quick-and-easy CV Builder contains thousands of in-demand skills for every profession that can be added to your CV in seconds – saving you time and greatly improving your chances of landing job interviews.

Work experience/Career history

By this point, employers will be keen to know more detail about you career history.

Starting with your most recent role and working backwards, create a snappy list of any relevant roles you’ve held.

This could be freelance, voluntary, part-time or temporary jobs too. Anything that’s relevant to your target role is well-worth listing!

Work experience

Structuring your roles

Whilst writing your CV, it’s essential to look at it from the eyes of a recruiter.

If they’re met with giant blocks of text which are impossible to navigate, they might get frustrated and skip onto the next CV.

Instead, make use of the 3-step structure shown below, to give them a pleasant reading experience.

Role descriptions

Begin with a summary of your role, detailing what the purpose of your job was, who you reported to and what size of team you were part of (or led).

Key responsibilities

Use bullet points to detail the key responsibilities of your role, highlighting hard skills, software and knowledge wherever you can.

Keep them short and sharp to make them easily digestible by readers.

Key achievements

Finish off by showcasing 1-3 key achievements made within the role.

This could be anything that had a positive effect on your company, clients or customers, such as saving time or money, receiving exemplary feedback or receiving an award.

Example job for Emirates Cabin Crew CV

Working for a leading international airline based out of London Central Airport. Works with an inflight team of 12 to provide exceptional customer service and ensure passenger and cabin safety, alongside ensuring efficient boarding and deboarding, and demonstrating safety equipment and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend pre-flight briefings to receive the assigned working position for each flight and discuss potential issues and solutions
  • Prepare the cabin including taking inventory of food items, beverages, and headsets, and create a sales inventory prior to take off and landing
  • Check and maintain onboard emergency equipment and first aid kits to ensure proper functionality
  • Administer first aid to passengers in the event of an emergency in a discreet, and reassuring manner

Quick tip: Create impressive job descriptions easily in our quick-and-easy CV Builder by adding pre-written job phrases for every industry and career stage.

Education section

Although there should be mentions of your highest and most relevant qualifications earlier on in your CV, save your exhaustive list of qualifications for the bottom.

If you’re an experienced candidate, simply include the qualifications that are highly relevant to Emirates Cabin Crew roles.

However, less experienced candidates can provide a more thorough list of qualifications, including A-Levels and GCSEs.

You can also dedicate more space to your degree, discussing relevant exams, assignments and modules in more detail, if your target employers consider them to be important.

Interests and hobbies

The hobbies and interests CV section isn’t mandatory, so don’t worry if you’re out of room by this point.

However, if you have an interesting hobby , or an interest that could make you seem more suitable for the role, then certainly think about adding.

Be careful what you include though… Only consider hobbies that exhibit skills that are required for roles as a Emirates Cabin Crew, or transferable workplace skills.

There is never any need to tell employers that you like to watch TV and eat out.

Writing your Emirates Cabin Crew CV

When putting together your Emirates Cabin Crew CV, there are a few key points to remember

Always tailor your CV to the target role, even if it means creating several versions for different roles.

Additionally, remember that the structure and format of your CV needs just as much attention as the content.

Good luck with your job search!

The Emirates English Test

This test is meant to measure your mastery of the English language. It is taken at the third step of the Emirates Open Day, and at the HireVue stage of the Long-Form application process.

Applicants report this being the most challenging part of the process, as well as the one where the highest number of applicants are rejected.

The Test takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and is in a multiple-choice format .

Emirates English Test Sample Question

Choose the correct answer to complete the sentence:

Will's favourite food is cake. As he detected the _____ of freshly baked cakes from outside the bakery, he began to _____ dessert.

The correct answer is aroma, crave.

To answer this question, let's first focus on the first blank.

We can eliminate the second option because taste isn't detectable from outside the bakery. We are left with various options that all mean smell: stink, aroma, scent, and smell.

We can also eliminate stink because it denotes a bad smell, and we know that Will likes cake and is likely to consider its smell enjoyable.

After eliminating these, we can turn our attention to the second blank. Hate and dislike both share a similar meaning. The second part of the sentence is meant to serve as an example or demonstration of Will's partiality toward cake. This would make it odd if Will were to have a negative reaction to the aroma of cake.

We are left with one possible answer: aroma, (which means the wafting smell of something) and crave (which means a strong desire).

Prepare for the Emirates Recruitment Process!

  • Emirates offers a very compelling compensation package as well as employment options for candidates with little to no experience. This combination makes them very desirable for aspiring flight attendants.
  • It should come as no surprise, then, that the recruitment process is selective, arduous, and challenging. Rejection means you have to wait six months to reapply!

What's in our PrepPack?

To help candidates nail their Emirates recruitment on the first go-round, we have put together a preparation pack which includes:

  • 4 detailed guides for group exercises, including example and case studies
  • English (verbal reasoning) practice tests and video guide
  • Interview guide
  • Personality test guide and mock test

Emirates Cabin Crew Application Form

The first stage of the long-form Emirates recruitment process requires you to fill in an online application form.

The first field on the application form requires you to answer the question “ Why would you like to work for Emirates ?” You are given 4000 characters, approximately 500 words, to answer this question.

Light Bulb

TIP : Both in the application form and on the assessment day, refrain from answering why you would like to join the crew with "I am looking to travel, see places, or meet people" . Emirates recruiters are aware that attending flights is viewed as a dream job for travellers and wanderlusts. Ther are specifically looking for career-oriented people who aren't just in it for the experience.

For this question, you will need to include the key values of the company in order to truly impress the Emirates group.

These include:

✔ Curiosity ✔ Professional ✔ Empathetic ✔ Progressive ✔ Cosmopolitan ✔ A passion for customer satisfaction ✔ Embracing other cultures ✔ A positive attitude ✔ A natural ability to provide excellent service in a team environment ✔ The ability to deal with people from many cultures

This essentially is a cover letter explaining to Emirates why you are a great candidate and can fulfil all expectations .

After completing and sending in the form, you should receive a response from Emirates within a few days. If you are shortlisted, you will receive an invitation to complete the HireVue English assessment and interview. You may also be invited to an invite-only assessment day, which will go more or less along the lines of the Emirates Open Days, described below.

The Emirates Open Days

A second option to join the Emirates Cabin Crew is to attend one of the numerous open days that are held throughout the world.

Here you will be given the opportunity to hand in your CV for consideration and you will be given plenty of information on the Emirates brand, what they do and how they do it.

If you impress your recruiters enough on one of these open days, you will be invited back the next day or in the near future to attend the Emirates cabin crew assessment day .

The Emirates Cabin Crew Assessment Day

If you have done well enough in the previous stages of the Emirates recruitment process you will receive a phone call or email inviting you to attend the Emirates Cabin Crew assessment day .

This is a full day of activities and presentations and there are a few eliminations throughout the day. Therefore, as well in addition to preparation, it is advisable to be well-slept and calm on the day. Don't make any other plans! You might very well end up spending the entire day at the recruitment centre. If you had to travel to attend and are hoping to add sightseeing to your itinerary, consider extending your visit.

emirates airlines cover letter sample

TIP : Naturally, there will breaks throughout the day. Take advantage of these breaks to get to know your fellow applicants! Ideally, come prepared with a packed lunch and snacks. TIP : Being able to present your knowledge of the company is always impressive. Do your research before attending the open day, and show that you understand the organisational culture and values at Emirates.

We will explain each stage of the day below :

Presentation

This starts off the day and is a one-and-a-half-hour complete presentation about flying with Emirates, life in Dubai, and living as an Emirates cabin crew member.

Group discussion

In this assessment, you will be placed in groups, generally of two. You will receive a card with a picture of a city on it and you will have to discuss this city with your partner . You can use any means to get more information on the city and after 10 minutes you will have to present three things in the city to the assessors.

In this test, you will be tested to see if you can reach 212cm (standing on tiptoes is permitted) in order to be able to operate the emergency mechanisms on the plane correctly and reach the overhead compartments.

Short informal interview

This is a five-minute interview and is more of an informal chat with one of the assessors. There are generally two questions that you will be asked. The two Emirates cabin crew interview questions are:

  • Why do you want to work for Emirates?
  • Why do you want to be a flight attendant?

For these questions, it is important to remember the key values that we mentioned above and try to incorporate them into your answers. A further way of preparing for these questions is to practice saying your answers out loud. Perfect your interview skills with our interview preparation package.

As mentioned above - don't talk about your yearnings to travel the world. Focus instead on the qualities that make you a good service provider, such as communication and empathy.

💡  After this interview, you will each receive an envelope containing either an invitation to continue or a rejection.

Emirates English Test (if applicable)

Most candidates will then be asked to take the Emirates English test. This test contains various different stages.

First, you will be given two short stories to read through and answer five questions for each story.

This tests your verbal comprehension abilities that are used daily in in-flight management. You are then given a letter and asked to answer five questions pertaining to it as well.

💡  Following this, there will be another elimination .

Essay Writing Test

At this stage of the Emirates Cabin Crew Assessment Day, you have to write an essay on a selected topic .

Popular choices include: introducing some good places to visit in a country, writing a thank you letter, and writing a report about a holiday that you have recently taken.

For hints and tips on how best to go about writing answers of this nature, check out our writing tips page .

Second Group Discussion

In this assessment, you will split into groups of about 20 and be given a brief along the following lines: There has been a mix-up at the airport and even though 20 people had placed orders for hire cars there are only 10 cars available. What should you do?

There are similar variants to this situation as well. At the end of the discussion, one of the assessors comes in and plays the part of someone who didn’t receive a car.

You have to comfort her and this tests your empathising skills as well.

In order to do well in this group discussion you have to bear in mind the key values, mentioned above as well as not being too overbearing.

For more information and tips, see our group exercise page.

💡  Following this, there will be a further elimination .

Practise Makes Perfect

If you are looking to improve your Verbal Reasoning abilities and interview skills, look no further. Our Prep course covers every stage of the Emirates Cabin Crew hiring process. Use it to ensure you walk into your assessment day and interviews confident and well-prepared.

Online Personality Profile Test

After the third elimination, if you have made it through, you will be asked to complete the Emirates Cabin Crew psychometric test.

However, you may be given directions on it and told to take it online before your Emirates Cabin Crew final interview which will be held at a later date.

The Emirates cabin crew psychometric test is a personality profiling test that normally takes 45 minutes to complete.

There are 180 questions to answer in this psychometric test. It has been claimed that it is impossible to prepare for these tests but extensive research has proved this to be false.

With accurate preparation, understanding how these tests work and being appreciative of what the employer wants, you will be able to answer the questions in sync with what Emirates want.

Emirates Cabin Crew Interview

On a date that has been previously arranged at the Emirates assessment day, you will face the final interview.

This is the last step of the Emirates cabin crew recruitment process.

Some popular Emirates cabin crew interview questions include the following:

  • Can you describe a time when you received constructive criticism?
  • What do you find challenging?
  • Describe a stressful event in your life and how you dealt with it.
  • Have you ever had to deal with a difficult client? How did you do so?
  • Why nationalities do you think you will have the most difficulty dealing with?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to make a difficult decision.
  • What was the worst mistake you have ever made?
  • What do you know about Dubai?
  • What do you know about Emirates Airlines?

These questions are just a sampling of what you will receive on the day. However, in order to answer these questions correctly, be sure to utilize the and our interview preparation package.

How to Write an Aviation Cover Letter

It probably won’t apply to all jobs in the industry, but a cover letter a good way to distinguish yourself from the pack..

emirates airlines cover letter sample

[File photo: Adobe Stock]

So far in this series, we have covered how to write an aviation resume and how to apply for a pilot job online . There is a third career media skill that is important to know, though it won’t apply to all positions, and that is how to write a cover letter.

The cover letter may seem like a bit of an anachronism, and in some ways it is. Few large airlines ask for one anymore; you may have noticed that the AirlineApps base application doesn’t even allow you to attach a cover letter (or a resume, for that matter). At large airlines doing a great deal of hiring, the process is quite data-driven, and the computer that spits out your name to be interviewed by a human will have zero appreciation of a well-crafted cover letter. Still, even at these companies you will bring your resume to the interview, and this should be accompanied by a cover letter—even if it seems destined to languish, unread, in the interviewer’s file folder.

The cover letter assumes much greater importance for corporate jobs, at smaller companies, whenever mailing or emailing your resume unbidden, when pounding the street and “cold-calling” potential employers, and when meeting recruiters at job fairs. Your cover letter accompanies and enhances your resume by fleshing out a potential employer’s idea of you. It’s more important in the early stages of your career, when your credentials alone aren’t so impressive. By presenting a neat, well-organized, well-written cover letter, you are introducing yourself as a neat, well-organized, and intelligent candidate—a future employee more valuable than your certificates and hours alone might indicate.

Not a Writer?

The challenge here is that there are plenty of people who are neat, well-organized, and intelligent who are not naturally good writers. If this describes you, I highly suggest that you enlist the help of more literate friends or family members, even to the point of having someone ghost write your basic cover letter. If you don’t know such a person, hire one online (starving writers are a dime a dozen), and get them to proof your resume while you’re at it. Readability is everything; an overly wordy, confusing, or typo-riddled cover letter will quickly be cast aside.

emirates airlines cover letter sample

What Goes in a Cover Letter?

Your cover letter should take the form of a one-page business letter; an example is above with a key for reference. The letter need not be long, and in many cases might fill half the page. It should be left-justified in block format, with a single space between most elements before the signature block. It should be semi-formal in tone, use active voice, and be personalized for each job that you are interested in. Most will be similar enough that it’s useful to create a baseline stock copy, and then modify as needed.

The first element is your home or permanent address, without your name or title (1). After a single space, put today’s date, in written rather than digital format (2). Next, write the name and address of the company you are targeting (3). Ideally you will know the name and title of the person who does the hiring, and this should precede the address. Do some digging if necessary; this will demonstrate knowledge of the target company.

The salutation (4) should be personalized if you know the recipient’s name, and should take the form of “Dear Ms. Lastname,” “Dear Mr. Lastname,” or “Dear Firstname Lastname.” If you don’t know the recipient’s name, the salutation should be gender-neutral. “To Whom It May Concern:” is rather impersonal; “Dear Sir or Madam,” or “Dear Sir/Madam,” is better.

The body of the letter should be three or four paragraphs. In the first paragraph (5), state your purpose for writing, i.e. your interest in the job. This is a good place to demonstrate knowledge of the company, to appropriate their buzzwords or slogans, and to drop the names of any internal recommendations. This is a place for active verbs and vivid adjectives. You are capturing the reader’s interest.

In the middle paragraph or paragraphs (6), you are summarizing your background and experience as it relates to this particular job. You don’t want this to just be a redundant reiteration of your resumé; you want to better flesh out who you are, why you want the job, and why you’d be the ideal candidate, making your case in ways that you canno t within the rigid confines of a resumé. It’s OK to get a little personal here, sharing the influences that made you who you are, and explaining (in a positive manner) why you’re ready to move on to this job (7). This is a good spot to humblebrag how you’ve been a positive force at your current and previous employers (8), and to bring up subtle factors that set you apart from the competition (9).

The closing paragraph (10) is the place to make your call to action. You’re asking for an interview here; don’t be shy about it. Make reference to enclosures, include your contact information, and close on a gracious note.

The signature block (11) should include a valediction (“Sincerely,” is a safe bet; “Sincerely yours,” “Respectfully yours,” or “Cordially,” are also good options), and then four spaces, followed by your name, formatted as it appears on the header of your resume. Within the four spaces you can insert a graphic of your signature, or leave blank to be physically signed if printed on paper, or just leave blank altogether. After your name and an additional space, type the word “Enclosures:” and the number of physical or email attachments included.

If this cover letter is intended to be taken with you while you pound the pavement or attend job fairs, print it on high-quality paper similar (but not necessarily identical) to that of your resume.

How To Write an Aviation Cover Letter

A great aviation cover letter has several key elements. First, it needs to capture your flight hours and comprehensive background in aviation safety. Second, it needs to convey your exceptional leadership attributes, which are essential for any pilot position. Below, we’ll walk you through each section of your aviation cover letter to help you refine your content and land your next big job opportunity.

1. Contact information and salutation

List all essential contact information in the header of your aviation cover letter, including your name, phone number, email, and LinkedIn URL. Be sure to address the hiring manager by name — Mr. or Ms. [Last Name]. If you can’t find the hiring manager’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager.” This adds a personal touch to your job application that can help you stand out from other candidates.

2. Introduction

Open your aviation cover letter with a strong introductory paragraph to grab the attention of the hiring manager. Highlight your years of experience and unique qualifications within the aviation space. Anchor your paragraph with an eye-catching achievement backed by a powerful number or metric. This approach is highly effective in drawing the reader in and enticing them to engage with your content.

3. Body paragraphs

Include two paragraphs that describe your professional experience within the aviation industry. Start by mentioning details about the airline’s reputation, culture, or values and explain how they align with your background. Focus on highlighting specific achievements you can substantiate with hard numbers, such as flight hours or customer satisfaction scores. Consider adding a list of bullet points to break up the monotony of the text on the page, which will help improve the readability of your aviation cover letter.

American Airlines’ reputation for providing high-end customer service to passengers strongly aligns with my professional background. I am confident I can help your team continue to drive operational and service excellence based on the following achievements in my career:

4. Aviation skills and qualifications

While it isn’t advisable to feature a bulleted list of your aviation skills, tactically incorporate key terms from the job posting into your paragraphs. For instance, if an airline is seeking a pilot who has experience operating a particular plane model, this information should be clearly highlighted in your aviation cover letter. Below, you’ll find a list of aviation skills you may encounter during the job search:

Key Skills and Qualifications
Aeronautical science Aircraft technology
Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Aviation
Commercial aviation Cross-country flights
Equipment maintenance FAA first class medical
FAA regulations Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)
Flight operations Flight planning
Flight safety Multi-engine
Navigation PiC
Piloting Preventative maintenance
Risk management SiC
Spatial awareness Team management
Turbine engine

5. Closing section

In the closing paragraph of your aviation cover letter, include a call to action inviting the hiring manager to interview you. Emphasize how your background as a pilot can create value for the airline you’re targeting. Be sure to thank the hiring manager for their time and consideration in the last sentence.

Best regards,

Aviation Cover Letter Tips

1. highlight your customer service expertise.

Hiring managers want to see specific examples and tangible insights into your customer service experience as they evaluate your application. An airline’s reputation hinges on customer satisfaction. Organizations will be much more likely to invite you to an interview if you display that you have a successful background in achieving high-performance metrics for your previous organizations. In the example below, the job seeker showcases their high customer service ranking across hundreds of flights, which effectively demonstrates their client relations and communication skills:

As a flight attendant with over six years of experience, I’ve developed an advanced understanding of client relations and airline operations. During my time with Jet Blue Airlines, I achieved customer satisfaction ratings of over 95% on 300 domestic flights. My customer service experience and communication skills will allow me to excel in the flight attendant position with your organization.

2. Quantify your achievements within the aviation field

Utilizing numbers and appropriate metrics to your advantage can provide helpful context and enhance the impact of your professional achievements. This is especially important if you’re pursuing a position as a commercial airline pilot. Most hiring managers heavily analyze your flight time, cross-country hours, and night-time hours when evaluating your application. In the example below, the job seeker utilizes bullet points within the cover letter to provide a clear overview of their aviation experience and flight hours:

3. Showcase your leadership capabilities

Whether you’re managing passengers as a flight attendant or leading teams as a professional pilot, leadership skills are essential for success within the aviation industry. Your ability to interface effectively with diverse passenger populations and flight teams is extremely valuable to prospective employers.
