A challenge to the value of referencing and citations is sometimes heard in design research circles. This challenge questions the value of good referencing and citations to research and practice in design. This article will address the misunderstandings that give rise to these challenges. This article outlines the foundations of referencing and citation. It clarifies central issues in referencing and citation. It discusses literature review as an exercise linked to good referencing and it offers resources and tools for design research. Most important, it discusses the role of evidence in analyzing and solving problems in design research. While some design problems involve taste and interpretation, most design arguments rest on statements of fact. Statements of fact have truth-value established by evidence. References make evidence accessible distinct from the person and claims of the writer. By providing evidence for reasoned argument, good referencing and citation serves both the field of design practice and the discipline of design research. Good referencing is central to the growing literature of design research for four main reasons: reasoned argument, access to common evidence, building the field, and improving the intellectual and practical quality of the discipline.

This workshop is based on my now very dated experience as secretary of research committees of Deakin University and the University of Melbourne’s faculty of engineering, my own PhD, examining doctorates, discussions with several experienced and expert PhD supervisors who I acknowledge at the end of these notes, and on several guides to the PhD, none of which I read before completing my PhD.

1.The judicial system in the nations is generally considered as an important public institution to promote the liberty and social justice. The role and influence of public policy and administration can hold a considerable power in the shaping of Korean judicial system. The current literature in this field is just on legal theory, and little is known about the processes, actions and interactions of players relating with the elements of public policy studies. 2. The study’s purposes were: (a) to examine the phenomenon inherent in the public administration of Korean judicial system (b) to generate a theory on its phenotype in the national and comparative or interdisciplinary viewpoints. 3. Based on the grounded theory approach as well as hermeneutics and heuristics, the kind of tools, i.e., concepts, terms, essences as well as inter-relational understanding or themes were employed. The theories and tenets generally on the elements of public policy, as stems from Sabatier & Mooney, Walzer, Habermas & Foucault, Weber &Turner, Simons, Bourdieu and so, provided the backdrop for this study. 4. Research questions focused on the policy process and actions, interactions of players within the public policy aspect of Korean judicial system and its phenotype in terms of national and comparative or interdisciplinary viewpoints. 5. Research participants consisted of a purposive sample of 30 Korean lawyers, legal historians, law professors and civic leadership who responded with the individual in-depth interviews. They were preliminarily surveyed with the written questions leading to select major occurrences or events, and deeply investigated through the interviews at next. The data collection consisted of public documentation, record, personal writings, and texts of Korean source 6. The findings indicated that the public administration of Korean judicial system in view of public policy elements is (i) unique, but sharable (ii) inevitable, but struggled, (iii) static, but transformative (iv) general, but professional. 7. Implications for positive social change include deeper understanding of Korean judicial system in terms of public policy studies and importance of public policy on its shaping.

“This text provides a broad coverage, focused approach for dissertation, balanced approach between quantitative and qualitative designs, and excellent examples .”
“I wish this text was available when I was working on my dissertation as it would have demystified the process greatly!”
“The title is wonderful and attention getting . It’s practical and consistent with the title in terms of compliance with requirements while seeking the path of least resistance toward completion of a quality product.”
“[S]traightforward, well-written, concise and not too cumbersome…. gets to the root of what students need to know . I like the detailed explanations and examples for writing each section of the dissertation.…The text explains and gives examples of how to write the methodology and the results. I also think the student suggestions are very helpful.”
“The text is well organized .…It includes chapters on the presentation of both quantitative and qualitative results which are particularly welcome in PhD programs that value paradigmatic diversity and do not expect students to conform to the assumptions of a single paradigm such as positivism.”
Students like the style of the textbook -- I have used this book in the past and will continue to use it in my Dissertation course.
Excellent resource for new PhD students. The authors provide a wealth of information on the topics of importance to graduate students.
Useful practical information to complement more scholarly information about research.
A good development on the previous edition; enhancing a number of points/apsect well.
The book serves as a nice supplemental to the primary course text. The changes in the new edition offer valuable clarifications and examples.
This edition:
- Walks readers through the dissertation process as an ideal mentor would.
- Devotes more attention to qualitative work, and touches upon mixed methods.
- Discusses online library resources and completing one's dissertation via the Internet.

This new edition has:
Updated the information on: the selection of an appropriate research topic, the review of the literature, the description of the methodology and research design, the collection and analysis of data, and the interpretation, presentation, and discussion of the results and implications of the study.
Replaced older references with newer, more contemporary ones, including many new dissertation examples.
Added significant new content.
Discussed that the traditional null hypothesis significance testing model is being challenged and augmented by an emphasis on clinical or practical significance with measures of effect size and confidence intervals. Have explained and illustrated this new approach to the presentation of statistical results.
Acknowledged an emerging emphasis on theoretical "models" and the influence of model-building on the design and presentation of research. Provided several examples of studies that incorporate this approach.
Expanded discussion of the Internet as a source of data, an opportunity for data collection, and a vehicle for data analysis, together with recommendations for potentially helpful websites and software programs that may be unfamiliar to the average reader.
Acknowledged the parallel expansion of available data sources in all their varied forms, including data archives, social media, and what is currently known as "big data."
Expanded the sections on qualitative and multimodal methods of research that have an inductive, theory-building focus.
Explained and illustrated the concepts with new tables and figures, and, in many cases provided very specific details for how to incorporate them into a research study.
