Program structure

Geared toward general music, choral and instrumental music educators with any level of experience, the online MM in music education is a flexible program based around the following structure: music education (15 credits), teaching practicums (four credits), music theory and history (nine credits) and a research-to-practice capstone (four credits).

The program is 100 percent online, and no campus visits are required. Students with full-time jobs typically attend part time, taking one or two classes each semester, including summers, and finish in about three years.

Kari Adams is a conductor of Concert Chorale at Mizzou. She previously worked in Choral Music Education at Florida State University, where she received the Outstanding Teaching in the Major (undergraduate) award. Dr. Adams is a passionate educator, conductor and researcher. She has conducted All-State and regional honor choirs in several states and presented at state practitioner conferences and conventions. Her research interests include music teacher education, teacher identity construction, aesthetic response to music performance and implicit theories of musical ability. She has been published in leading journals in the field and presented at regional, national and international conferences.

Music (Music Education)

The music education degree program is designed for students who wish to become school music teachers. Graduates will be certified to teach music to children in kindergarten through twelfth grade, including elementary general music and either secondary instrumental or vocal music. MU music education students become successful teachers and performers who are sought after by schools in Missouri and beyond, as well as by prestigious graduate programs. Students enhance their musicianship by taking private lessons and participating in ensembles, and acquire a breadth of knowledge through coursework in general education, professional education and core music areas. They develop skills related to music teaching and rehearsing in their music education classes, which are accompanied by observing, interacting with, and instructing students in the public schools. When Lauren Hacker was pursuing her bachelor’s degree in nursing, she didn’t have much of an interest in becoming a nurse practitioner. Although she knew she wanted to work in pediatrics, she wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to do until a formative experience working in the operating room shaped her future trajectory.

After graduating with her BSN from the University of Missouri–Columbia in December 2016, Hacker moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to work in the OR at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt . Over the course of two years, she was able to work closely with an orthopedic nurse practitioner and observed firsthand what a surgical nurse practitioner role could look like.

“She would see patients before surgery, she would see patients after surgery, in the hospital, outpatient, and I just really liked the things that she did,” Hacker said. “I saw that I could still work in a hospital setting and still care for those patients outside of being at the bedside. Getting to see those practitioners work – the impact that they get to have on patients and how they help teams run smoothly – was what inspired me to go back to school.”

In 2019, Hacker moved back to her hometown of St. Louis and started working as a bedside nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at St. Louis Children’s Hospital . With her sights set on working as a surgical NP, she enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program in the College of Nursing at the University of Missouri–St. Louis in the fall of 2020.

Although UMSL’s DNP program was already set up to be almost entirely online, starting school in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic made things challenging. The program’s orientation, in which students have the opportunity to meet their instructors and fellow students face to face, was held over Zoom, for instance.

Overall, though, Hacker said she had a good experience in the program, noting the supportive instructors. In particular, she appreciated being able to have a say in where she completed her 600 direct care hours for her practicum rotation. Assistant Teaching Professor Candace-Rae Davis , who directs the DNP program, gives each student a preference list where they can indicate areas in which they have strengths or weaknesses or areas in which they would like to gain clinical experience.

“I think my group that went through practicum was one of the first groups that really got that opportunity to say, ‘Hey, these are my interests. These are my strengths. These are my weaknesses,’” she said. “That was really great, and the fact that they find our placements for us was part of the reason why I chose UMSL and also a huge, huge benefit of the program. I have some colleagues who go to other schools in the area where they don’t do that. The stress and difficulty at times of finding preceptors in your field can be challenging. It was really great that not only did they find them for us, but they also asked for our input instead of just putting us where they found availability.”

Hacker went on to complete some of her clinical hours with the surgery team at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital , which ultimately helped her land a job as a surgical nurse practitioner at the hospital. She’ll start the new position in January 2025 after taking her boards in October and getting fully licensed and credentialed this fall.

In her new position, Hacker will be working alongside three other nurse practitioners to care for general surgery patients, including inpatients – both before and after surgery – and outpatients in clinic. She also hopes to help cover for the trauma nurse practitioner when she’s out of the office and is looking forward to seeing how her role evolves day to day once she starts.

“Working in the OR in my first nursing job was really something that got me interested in surgery and getting to see the care before, after and during all sorts of different surgical cases and procedures,” she said.

In addition to her work in the PICU at St. Louis Children’s, Hacker has spent the summer completing a final elective course and wrapping up her project ahead of graduation this month. With most of the heavy lifting done, she’s excited to finally have the finish line in sight.

“We do 600 direct care hours over the course of three semesters, so it is a big accomplishment,” she said. “My advice to any students currently in the DNP program is just to stick with it – it gets better.”

Students in the undergraduate music education program develop excellent musicianship, breadth of knowledge in general education and core music areas and gain extensive knowledge about music teaching methods through classroom instruction. Music education students observe, interact with, and instruct K-12 students in the public schools regularly throughout their preparation, allowing for important “hands on” experience prior to the student teaching semester. Furthermore, music education faculty members often accompany students in their field experiences, giving them immediate and practical feedback about their teaching skills.     

Music education graduates receive the Bachelor of Music with an Emphasis in Music Education degree.  Music education graduates qualify for certification to teach music in grades K–12, including elementary general music, as well as their choice of secondary instrumental music, vocal music, or both fields. Our music education graduates become successful teachers and performers that are sought by schools in Missouri and beyond, as well as by prestigious graduate programs. For those music education graduates who have sought employment as K-12 music teachers, 100% have successfully attained teaching positions for over two decades. 

MU music education faculty members play active leadership roles in international and national organizations devoted to improving preK-12th grade music instruction. They also regularly publish their work in premier research and practitioner journals and remain actively engaged with music teachers through presentations and clinics.

University of Central Missouri Offers Multiple Aviation Career Destinations

The University of Central Missouri offers more than 150 undergraduate and degrees in an assortment of disciplines, including three aviation Bachelor of Science degree programs (professional pilot, flight operations management, and airport management) and two master’s pathways (aviation safety and MBA in airport management).

Regardless of the program of study, Central Missouri students are exposed to all aspects of the aviation industry. 

Matthew Furedy, a 1999 graduate from university, returned to the school in fall 2015 as an assistant professor. Furedy presently teaches a variety of courses, with a focus on those  that are a part of the department’s airport management degree. 

Courses in the program range from airport planning and design to corporate aviation management, all of which prepare students to sit for the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) Certified Member (CM) exam. 

“I think that preparing our students and having them take this exam is a good thing,” Furedy said. “I know some other programs have that as an option, rather than a requirement, and I’m not sure how many actively make it part of the degree. [One of the other benefits of our structure] is we also require that students complete an internship. The more hands-on experience you can get, the better off you’ll be. So, I tell students that, if they can, to do an internship every summer that they’re here.”

Presently, around 70 students are enrolled in Central Missouri’s undergraduate airport management program —which is the second largest in the department of aviation . While many students pursue careers as airport managers following graduation, alumni are employed in many different aviation disciplines.

“We have students that go through this program in order to go on and be an air traffic controller," Furedy said. "Then we have those that work in airport ops or in management, at FBOs, working for the government, or as consultants. We even have some that go on to work at [OEMs]. There’s a very wide variety of jobs that students go off and do.”

Andy Multer began instructing at Central Missouri in spring 2020. During this semester, Multer passed the CM exam. This was an inspiration for a new program that he helped to create at the school, the airport management MBA. 

This online program was first offered in fall 2021 and currently has about 15 students. GMAT scores are not required for entrance into the MBA program, which costs less than $20,000 on average to complete. Most courses are eight weeks long, meaning that there are five start dates throughout the year. 

“The program is designed for junior- to mid-level airport employees that are looking to advance in their career,” Multer said. “You get well rounded airport management training with this degree, which is the only (AACSB accredited) airport management MBA in the world. We anticipate students to take two years to complete the MBA program because we really try to push it towards people that are working at an airport. We want this because experience is the most important part, and this program is to help you grow.

“Earning this graduate degree [in conjunction with three years of work experience] will ensure you meet all the requirements to take the AAAE’s AAE [Accredited Airport Executive] exam. Plus, students get their CM and two ACE [airport certified employee] certificates.”

Both undergraduate and graduate students at Central Missouri are encouraged to be involved in a number of organizations to further their education. Some popular aviation groups include the school’s AAAE chapter, the Missouri Airport Managers Association, Women in Aviation International, and Alpha Eta Rho. Additionally, the department of aviation has an emphasis toward connecting students with opportunities to apply their coursework in the real world. 

“We own and operate our airport [Skyhaven Airport, (KRCM)] here,” Furedy said. “So, students have the ability to work at the airport, mainly in-line service, and we do offer internships, where they can shadow the airport manager at. That’s something that’s unique about the program, to be able to get out of the book and see the airport.

“In our airport certification class, we do go visit an airport and do an actual Part 139 inspection. We try to make it as real as possible and have been to a lot of different commercial services airports doing that. We’ve been to O’Hare [International Airport (KORD)] up in Chicago, Omaha [Airport (KOMA) in] Nebraska, Memphis [International Airport (KMEM) in Tennessee], Springfield-Branson National Airport (KSGF) south of us [in Missouri], and St. Louis Lambert International (KSTL).

“The big saying for the airport world is ‘if you’ve seen one airport, you’ve seen one airport,’ because even though there are standards on how to do things, each one does things a little bit differently.”

Purdue to graduate more than 1,700 students during summer commencement ceremonies

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — More than 1,700 graduating students will take their next giant leap during Purdue University’s two summer commencement ceremonies at Elliott Hall of Music on Aug. 3.

Jennifer Rumsey, a Purdue University alumna and native of Columbus, Indiana, serves as chair and CEO of Cummins Inc. and will deliver a keynote speech at both ceremonies. Purdue President Mung Chiang will be in attendance, and each ceremony will feature a student responder.

Of the 1,711 students eligible to participate in Purdue’s Summer 2024 Commencement 634 are undergraduates, 1,065 are graduate students, and 12 are students from Purdue Polytechnic’s statewide programs.

Commencement division dates and times

  • Division I: Saturday, Aug. 3, 9:30 a.m. — College of Education, College of Health and Human Sciences, College of Liberal Arts, College of Pharmacy, College of Veterinary Medicine, Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business
  • Division II: Saturday, Aug. 3, 2:30 p.m. — College of Agriculture, College of Engineering, College of Science, Purdue Polytechnic Institute

The doors to Elliott Hall of Music will open 90 minutes before each ceremony, and tickets are required for entry. Each graduation candidate may request up to four tickets. Only clear bags or small clutch bags are permitted in Elliott Hall of Music, and all bags will be checked. More information can be found at the commencement FAQs website . The ceremonies will be livestreamed from the Purdue News YouTube channel and linked on the Purdue commencement website before each ceremony begins.

Shah, Gee to give student responses

Shruti Shah of Fremont, California, who is to receive a Bachelor of Science from the College of Health and Human Sciences, will be the student responder in the Saturday morning (Division I) ceremony. Shah completed internships with Berkeley Pharma Tech and the Stanford Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Imaging. She was an undergraduate research assistant for the late Robert Proctor’s human factors lab and a research team member in The Data Mine corporate partnership program. After graduation, Shah plans to explore research opportunities in neuroscience.

Mark Gee of Johnston, Iowa, who is to receive a Doctor of Philosophy from the College of Agriculture, will be the student responder in the Saturday afternoon (Division II) ceremony. Gee has served as a Purdue Board of Trustees student member and has been involved in Purdue Space Day and the Purdue World Food Prize Youth Institute. He has completed internships with Corteva Agriscience, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, and the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation. As an undergraduate student, Gee was a Beering Scholar, earning three bachelor’s degrees in biological engineering, biochemistry and agronomy in 2019. He earned a Master of Science in Agricultural and Biological Engineering in 2022. After graduation, Gee plans to continue his professional career at Beck’s Hybrids in Atlanta, Indiana.

Celebrating Excellence: Dr. Susanna Garcia, Our 2024 Grand Marshal

Today, we celebrate Professor Emerita Susanna Garcia, a pianist and educator, whose 31 years of service in the School of Music and Performing Arts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are marked by her impressive dedication, innovation, and mentorship.

Dr. Garcia’s journey in music education began at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi where she received her undergraduate degree. She earned Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.

As the Louisiana Board of Regents/Ruth Stodghill Girard Endowed Professor from 2000 to 2021, Dr. Garcia has made lasting contributions to our institution. She served as the Coordinator of Keyboard Studies and the Scholarship Coordinator for the School of Music, roles that highlighted her deep dedication to student success and curriculum development. Among her many achievements, the development of eNovativePiano with her colleague Dr. Chat Kiat Lim stands out. This groundbreaking sequenced multimedia innovation revolutionized piano instruction and earned them the prestigious Music Teachers National Association-Frances Clark Award for Keyboard Pedagogy in 2021.

Dr. Garcia’s commitment to music education is further evident in her work as a clinician and scholar. She has presented workshops, master classes, and research papers at numerous conferences and has been published widely in scholarly journals. In addition, she has held leadership roles in organizations such as the Music Teachers National Association, Louisiana Music Teachers Association and, is currently serving on the board of trustees for the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy.

Dr. Garcia’s career travels far beyond the classroom. She has performed solo and chamber recitals, across the United States and internationally, delighting audiences from Canada to Ghana.  Her partnership with William Chapman Nyaho as the Nyaho/Garcia Piano Duo has received critical acclaim for their recordings and performances of both standard and contemporary repertoire.

In their nomination, colleagues shared much admiration. Dr. Garth Alper applauded her significant contributions, explaining that she “conjured up and successfully implemented a major overhaul of our piano curriculum through the development of eNovative Piano,” a first-of-its-kind online curriculum that is now used at colleges and high schools across the country. Dr. Chan Kiat Lim shared, “Susie Garcia's contributions to the School are undeniable, from the grant writings to the committees she has served and the mentorship she has provided. And as a teacher, she always had her student's interests at heart. Having worked closely with her for almost 15 years in creating eNovativePiano from the ground up, I greatly value her pedagogical perspectives, analytical insights, creativity, curiosity, and resilience.”  Although retired since 2021, Dr. Garcia remains active in music education through initiatives to make music education more inclusive, continued committee service, and publishing new works. She continues to inspire and lead in her retirement.
