Considering a combined degree: MD-PhD, MD-MBA, MD-MPH, MD-JD

New section.

You may not have known there are dual-degree programs offered by medical schools for students interested in pursuing an additional master’s degree. Learn about the difference between each of these dual-degree programs and why you might consider pursuing one.

premednav-combined-degree-628839840.jpg

While the majority of medical students pursue a traditional MD degree, dual-degree programs are available to students who are interested in pursuing an additional master’s degree in combination with their Doctor of Medicine.

According to the AAMC’s 2018 Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) , approximately 90% of students earn a traditional MD degree, 3% earn an MD-PhD, and the remaining earn a degree from another joint MD degree program with core foundation in medicine and focus in an additional area of interest.

Program description

This combined degree program prepares students to become physician-scientists who conduct research in addition to seeing patients. Most students earn their PhDs in biomedical disciplines such as biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biophysics, cell biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, or pharmacology.

Application process

MD-PhD committee members will look for evidence of an applicant’s passion for research by reviewing the applicant’s personal statement, research experiences, and letters of evaluation from faculty or researchers with whom the applicant has worked. In particular, committee members want to see relevant and substantive research experience, an understanding of the work of physician-scientists, intellectual drive, and perseverance.

Combined length of programs

Seven to eight years

Education process

The typical program includes two years of combined medical and graduate school coursework, three to five years of doctoral research — including the completion of a thesis project — and a return to medical school for core clinical training and electives during the final years of the curriculum

Almost all U.S. and Canadian medical schools have MD-PhD programs in one or more areas of specialization. You can find a listing of MD-PhD programs available at AAMC member medical schools here .

Career options

An MD-MPH program includes a Master of Public Health degree, which typically focuses on population or community health and equips students with the clinical skills and science background needed to effectively understand health and wellness from the perspectives of patients and different community populations. Topics studied include a patient’s ability to afford their medical prescriptions and how to work with communities to implement preventative care practices.

The process varies depending on the program. You may apply while applying to medical school, after being accepted to medical school, or after completing your second year of medical school.

Students can begin the MPH portion of their coursework after their first or second year of medical school. Possible concentrations include Child and Family Health, Environmental Health, Global Health Leadership, Health Education and Promotion, and Public Health Policy.

The MD-MPH prepares graduates to work as physicians in a public health setting, which may include diagnosing health problems and risk factors of individuals and within communities. Graduates use their perspectives to research and identify public health issues and implement an evidence-based approach to health improvement. In addition to clinical practice, MD-MPH degree holders may pursue careers related to disease prevention, health education, research, implementation science, and policy making. Visit  AAMC's Directory of MD-MPH Educational Opportunities for more information.

Health care and business are interconnected. Physicians often make business decisions related to which diagnostic tests to run and understanding which treatments insurance will cover. An MBA also equips physicians with the ability to make important business decisions related to growing their medical practices and determining if their practice can afford the cost of a new machines.

Students may indicate their interest in the MD-MBA joint degree upon being accepted to medical school, but they typically will not apply to the business program until their second year as a medical student. Applicants pursuing an MD-MBA will need to gain admission to the school of business and, in addition to the MCAT, MD-MBA students may be required to complete the GRE or GMAT depending on the business school requirements.

The MD-MBA curriculum incorporates economics, finance, and marketing strategy. Students may complete the first year of the MBA program prior to beginning medical school, and then complete a traditional medical school program.

Graduates from MD-MBA programs can pursue management roles in hospital administration, health care policy research, pharmaceutical or insurance companies, or medical device entrepreneurship with biotech companies. Being able to understand the financial motivations within the health care industry allows those with an MD-MBA to improve the health care system.

Students seeking a deeper understanding of the laws impacting the practice of medicine may benefit from a MD-JD program. These programs are designed for medical students who wish to integrate their study of medicine with training in the legal field.

Students will need to gain admission into the JD program at the law school through a separate application process. They may apply to law school during the second year of their MD program and will need to complete the LSAT exam. The LSAT is offered multiple time a year.

Combined length of program

Typically, students will be enrolled in a MD program for the first two years of their education before pursuing a JD during the third and fourth years. Students may complete their remaining MD and JD coursework during their fifth and sixth years.

Graduates with JD-MD degree may opt to work in academia, government, or in the private sector pursuing careers in health policy, biotechnology, or bioethics. The law curriculum prepares those who choose to practice medicine for the legal aspects of running a private medical practice.

Dual-Degree Programs

Stanford supports a wide range of opportunities to pursue more than one advanced degree, both within the School of Medicine and throughout other schools across the university.

The  Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)  enables a select group of incoming medical students to concurrently pursue a PhD in a scientific field of interest. Students are accepted to the program through the MD admissions process and arrive at Stanford already on track to obtain both degrees.

Non-MSTP students who wish to add a doctoral program after starting the MD program are encouraged to work directly with their department of interest to discuss joining its program.

The  master's of science in medicine  program gives PhD candidates in-depth exposure to clinical medicine that will help them develop the expertise to pursue translational research. Students selected to interview with any of the PhD programs offered at Stanford University can apply for admission to this program on a competitive basis.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a professional degree that prepares students to be leaders in the area of public health. The area of study emphasizes population-based approaches to solving complex health issues. Students from all Stanford scholarly concentrations may pursue a degree in public health   in partnership with an external institution.

Joint Degrees Within Dartmouth College

The Geisel School of Medicine and the Tuck School of Business offer students an opportunity to pursue combined MD/MBA degrees that can be completed in either five or six years. In a time of tremendous change in health care, there is a growing need for leaders with expertise in both medicine and management. This joint-degree program is designed to open pathways for leadership roles in diverse areas and industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotech, health care related entrepreneurial ventures, governmental health programs, health related nonprofits, hospital management, HMO management, large practice management, health care policy formation, and medical school administration, to name a few. Candidates for the joint degree must complete the separate admission and financial aid application processes at both the Geisel School and Tuck. There is no formula for admission to the combined program. Decisions are based on a combination of the following factors: academic excellence, leadership ability, accomplishments, interpersonal skills, and diversity. Although almost all Tuck students have work experience before they enroll, this is not a prerequisite for admission to this joint-degree program. It is recommended that applicants apply to Tuck during their second year at Geisel.

The Geisel School of Medicine is dedicated to improving health care through education, research, policy reform, leadership improvement, and communication with patients and the public. Geisel's Master of Public Health (MPH) curriculum is designed to provide every student with the fundamental skills, knowledge base, and philosophical foundation in health policy and clinical practice, with specific attention paid to public health, clinical/health services research, or health care leadership. The MPH/MBA joint degree offered with the Tuck School prepares graduates to take on leadership positions in both the public and private sectors of the health care industry.

The PhD/MBA joint degree program offers the unique opportunity for PhD students at Dartmouth College to finish off their training with management education. The joint degree aims to produce individuals who are not only thoroughly trained in a scientific discipline but also possess fundamental business and entrepreneurial skills. The program is currently only available to PhD students at Dartmouth. Students must apply to and be admitted to the MBA program. The PhD experience will be counted as post-bachelors degree work experience. Matriculating students must enter with the regular Tuck class in the fall and complete the required first-year Tuck core curriculum. Students are expected to participate in an internship during the summer between their first and second Tuck years, to reinforce the MBA experience. Courses taken during the PhD program will be counted as the equivalent of one term's worth of electives. While application and admission to the MBA program can occur at any point while enrolled in the PhD program, it's recommended that students apply in the third or fourth year of their program. Students are encouraged to meet with advisors for the PhD/MBA Program, including deans Joe Hall at Tuck, Ian Baker of Thayer, or Kerry Landers of the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. It is important that PhD students show strong academic ability as well as demonstrated potential for leadership, and they should be able to articulate well why the MBA degree will help them achieve their goals.

MEM/MBA and MBA/MEng

Students interested in tailoring their experience to gain both the management skills taught at the Tuck School of Business and the technical skills taught at the Thayer School of Engineering will benefit from one of these joint degrees. The programs are intended to develop leaders for careers that combine engineering/technology and business management. They are appropriate for students with an undergraduate degree in, or pre-Tuck experience in, engineering or science. The MBA/MEM program requires two years plus two terms to complete (summer and fall). The MBA/MEng program can be completed in two years. Students wishing to add a technical curriculum that overlays leadership, management, communication and collaboration will benefit from the MEM. Those looking to add depth or specialized knowledge within a technical area of study should consider the MEng. Candidates must complete the separate admission and financial aid application processes at each school.

Dual Degrees with Other Institutions

The three-year MBA/MA in International Relations dual degree program between the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University and the Tuck School of Business has been designed to prepare students for careers that combine international relations and business management.  The program is particularly appropriate for students who are seeking management positions within international corporations, financial institutions, economic and development institutions and government agencies.  The need is clear for individuals in these positions to have a sophisticated understanding of both international affairs and management issues.

The three-year MBA/MALD dual degree program between the Fletcher School at Tufts University and the Tuck School of Business is also designed to prepare students for careers that combine international relations and business management. The program is particularly appropriate for students who are seeking management positions within international corporations, financial institutions, economic and development institutions and government agencies.  The need is clear for individuals in these positions to have a sophisticated understanding of both international affairs and management issues.  Note: Tuck also has an exchange program with the Fletcher School (see Exchange Programs ).

The MBA/MCEP dual degree with nearby Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS) enables students to earn the two degrees concurrently. Climate change, wildlife protection, and alternative energy are just a few of the critical issues facing the world today. Vermont Law and Graduate School and its Master of Climate and Environmental Policy program are leading the movement to address these issues. The MCEP program gives students a comprehensive knowledge of the policies shaping the solutions to these problems and prepares graduates for leadership positions in the public and private sectors. Experiential learning opportunities with state and federal agencies, advocacy groups, and international organizations ensure that MCEP graduates are prepared for real-world situations the first day on the job. VLGS courses are delivered either on campus or online.

MBA/MPA AND MBA/MPA/ID

The MBA/MPA and MBA/MPA/ID (Master in Public Administration in International Development) dual degrees between the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Tuck School of Business are designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of established professionals seeking further leadership responsibilities in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors, and to prepare the next generation of leaders in international development. Dual degree candidates must complete the entire Tuck core curriculum as well as three semesters at the Kennedy School.

The MBA/MPP dual degree between the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Tuck School of Business prepares students to understand complex policy problems and to craft concrete solutions. In addition to completing the full-year core curriculum plus two terms at Tuck, MBA/MPP candidates are also required to complete the full-year core curriculum at the Kennedy School, plus one semester (including the Policy Analysis Exercise).  Candidates in this dual degree program can apply their core training, policy interests, and functional skills to roles and organizations across the public and nonprofit sectors.

Applying for a Dual MBA Degree Program

You can apply for one of the dual-degree programs if you are a current first-year student at one of our partner schools (except any of the Medical Sciences programs, which have different application guidelines) or you plan to pursue the first year of the dual degree at Wharton.

Candidates interested in applying to any other graduate program at Penn not listed above must apply to both programs separately and contact the other  program office for details on their courses. The Wharton MBA will be expected to be completed on a full-time basis, like all other degree candidates, with up to 4 courses being allowed to be taken at other Penn graduate schools.

Please review the specific application processes and requirements for joint and dual degrees.

Dual Degree FAQs

What is the difference between an mba and masters degree.

An MBA is a Master of Business Administration degree. It’s a specific designation of a master’s degree course of study.

Am I able to apply to the Lauder Program after I have started the Wharton MBA Program?

The academic calendar for first-year students in the Lauder Program begins in May. Students that have been accepted to the Wharton MBA Program in Round 1 or Round 2 can apply separately to the Lauder Program and still will be expected to start the program in May. Students cannot apply to the Lauder Program after they have started their first or second years at Wharton. For more information about applying to the Lauder Program, please visit the Lauder website or contact [email protected] .

Can I combine the Lauder Program with a degree program other than the Wharton MBA?

The Lauder Institute also offers a joint JD/MA program in partnership with Penn Law. For more information about the Lauder JD/MA, please visit this website .

Is Health Care Management a major or a separate health care program?

Health Care Management (HCM) is one of the 19 majors offered through the Wharton MBA Program. The Health Care Management major differs from other majors in that students must select this major at the time of application to Wharton. HCM integrates academic and professional development, helping students to obtain summer and permanent positions in all parts of the health care sector, including consulting firms, health care venture capital and private equity, digital health, health care analytics firms, biotechnology, pharmaceutical firms, hospitals, insurers, and government agencies. If prospective students wish to explore the Health Care Management major, the HCM department is happy to arrange either a telephone conversation or a meeting with June Kinney, the Associate Director of HCM. Please find more information on the application process here .

If I am not accepted into the Health Care Management major, can I still be admitted to Wharton?

Your application will be evaluated specifically for the Health Care Management major. If the Admissions Committee feels you are not best suited for HCM but could be a good fit for the MBA program more broadly, you will be considered for Wharton.

If I am admitted to a dual degree program with the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) or the School of Advanced Studies (SAIS), can I start my degree at HKS or SAIS instead of Wharton?

Applicants should apply to Wharton during the application cycle directly preceding their desired Wharton start date. If you are admitted to both programs and do not want to begin at Wharton, you will need to request a deferral and will be subject to our deferral policy. Deferrals typically are only granted for extenuating circumstances.

Are there any dual degree programs that will not allow me to start at Wharton?

The School of Design requires all dual degree students to start at Penn Design. The Harvard Kennedy School encourages students interested in the MPA/ID dual degree to start at HKS.

If I want to apply to a dual degree program, do I have to apply to the Wharton MBA Program and the other program separately?

Unless otherwise noted on the Interdisciplinary Programs website, you must submit separate applications and materials to both programs. Some schools will have strict application requirements around testing, recommendations, and essays. Please follow the admissions requirements for each individual school.

Are admissions decisions for dual degree programs made by one committee?

Applicants to the Lauder Joint MBA/MA in International Studies, the Francis J. & Wm. Polk Carey JD/MBA Program, and the MBA in Health Care Management will receive one joint decision. For all other MBA dual degree programs, you will receive separate decisions, and it is possible that you could be admitted to one program and not the other.

Can I create my own dual degree with a school not listed on the website?

We cannot accept any credits from other programs. You can pursue another program in your own time, but you would still be required to complete all Wharton credit units as prescribed by the full-time MBA program. As a full-time MBA student, you are expected to be at Wharton and pay tuition for four full semesters.

How do I learn more about a graduate program not listed on the Wharton Interdisciplinary Programs website?

If you are interested in other programs not listed on the website, please contact the program office of that respective program.

How many credit units can I take at other Penn graduate schools while a Wharton MBA student?

All Wharton MBA students can take four to six credit units at other Penn graduate schools .

Can I apply to a dual degree program after starting at Wharton?

For most dual degree programs, you can apply to the other program during your first year at Wharton. However, this may extend your time at Penn.

Can I connect with a current student that is a part of a specific dual degree program?

Due to the volume of such requests, we are unable to connect prospective students with current students in every dual degree program. Please review the profiles of our Admissions Fellows and request to be connected with a current MBA student who most closely aligns with your interests.

What if I want to pursue a degree beyond the master’s level at Penn?

Please speak with the PhD department of your interest if you intend to continue your studies beyond the master’s level.

Students interested in becoming leaders in health-care organizations such as physician practices, hospitals, or insurance and pharmaceutical companies may pursue a Full-Time MBA and MD degree. The joint-degree in medicine and business arms students with the necessary knowledge in economics, statistics, and the behavioral sciences to become leaders in their field.

Program structure.

To earn a dual MBA/MD degree, students complete 1400 units of Booth-only course credit (+LEAD) and required coursework at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine over a five-year period. Students complete their first two years of residency in the medical school. Students are encouraged to complete their first two years of medical school prior to applying.

During their third year at the medical school, they complete their clerkship/rotations during all four quarters. During their fourth year, students spend Summer Quarter at the medical school and Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters at Chicago Booth, where they typically complete 1200 units of course credit plus LEAD. Their final year consists of a business internship in the Summer Quarter followed by their remaining quarters spent in the medical school, where they incorporate their remaining 200 units of course credit at Chicago Booth to complete the joint-degree requirements.

Considering a Combined Degree: MD-PhD, MD-MBA, MD-MPH

Last Updated on June 24, 2022 by Laura Turner

While the majority of medical students pursue a traditional MD degree, dual-degree programs are available to students who are interested in pursuing an additional master’s degree in combination with their Doctor of Medicine.

According to the AAMC’s 2018 Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) , approximately 90% of students earn a traditional MD degree, 3% earn an MD-PhD, and the remaining earn a degree from another joint MD degree program with core foundation in medicine and focus in an additional area of interest.

Program description This combined degree program prepares students to become physician-scientists who conduct research in addition to seeing patients. Most students earn their PhDs in biomedical disciplines such as biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biophysics, cell biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, or pharmacology.

Application process MD-PhD committee members will look for evidence of an applicant’s passion for research by reviewing the applicant’s personal statement, research experiences, and letters of evaluation from faculty or researchers with whom the applicant has worked. In particular, committee members want to see relevant and substantive research experience, an understanding of the work of physician-scientists, intellectual drive, and perseverance.

Combined length of programs Seven to eight years

Education process The typical program includes two years of combined medical and graduate school coursework, three to five years of doctoral research — including the completion of a thesis project — and a return to medical school for core clinical training and electives during the final years of the curriculum.

Almost all US and Canadian medical schools have MD-PhD programs in one or more areas of specialization. You can find a listing of MD-PhD programs available at AAMC member medical schools here .

Career options Learn more at MD-PhD in the Social Sciences or Humanities: Is It Right For Me?

MD-MPH

Program description An MD-MPH program includes a Master of Public Health degree, which typically focuses on population or community health and equips students with the clinical skills and science background needed to effectively understand health and wellness from the perspectives of patients and different community populations. Topics studied include a patient’s ability to afford their medical prescriptions and how to work with communities to implement preventative care practices.

Application process The process varies depending on the program. You may apply while applying to medical school, after being accepted to medical school, or after completing your second year of medical school.

Combined length of programs Five years

Education process Students can begin the MPH portion of their coursework after their first or second year of medical school. Possible concentrations include Child and Family Health, Environmental Health, Global Health Leadership, Health Education and Promotion, and Public Health Policy.

Career options The MD-MPH prepares graduates to work as physicians in a public health setting, which may include diagnosing health problems and risk factors of individuals and within communities. Graduates use their perspectives to research and identify public health issues and implement an evidence-based approach to health improvement. In addition to clinical practice, MD-MPH degree holders may pursue careers related to disease prevention, health education, research, implementation science, and policy making.

Program description Healthcare and business are interconnected. Physicians often make business decisions related to which diagnostic tests to run and understanding which treatments insurance will cover. An MBA also equips physicians with the ability to make important business decisions related to growing their medical practices and determining if their practice can afford the cost of a new machines.

Application process Students may indicate their interest in the MD-MBA joint degree upon being accepted to medical school, but they typically will not apply to the business program until their second year as a medical student. Applicants pursing an MD-MBA will need to gain admission to the school of business and, in addition to the MCAT, MD-MBA students may be required to complete the GRE or GMAT depending on the business school requirements.

Combined length of programs Five years

Education process The MD-MBA curriculum incorporates economics, finance, and marketing strategy. Students may complete the first year of the MBA program prior to beginning medical school, and then complete a traditional medical school program.

Career options Graduates from MD-MBA programs can pursue management roles in hospital administration, healthcare policy research, pharmaceutical or insurance companies, or medical device entrepreneurship with biotech companies. Being able to understand the financial motivations within the healthcare industry allows those with an MD-MBA to improve the healthcare system.

Program description: Students seeking a deeper understanding of the laws impacting the practice of medicine may benefit from a MD-JD program. These programs are designed for medical students who wish to integrate their study of medicine with training in the legal field.

Application process: Students will need to gain admission into the JD program at the law school through a separate application process. They may apply to law school during the second year of their MD program and will need to complete the LSAT exam. Currently, the LSAT is offered four times annually: February, June, October, and December.

Combined length of program: Six years

Education process: Typically, students will be enrolled in a MD program for the first two years of their education before pursuing a JD during the third and fourth years. Students may complete their remaining MD and JD coursework during their fifth and sixth years.

Career options: Graduates with an MD-JD degree may opt to work in academia, government, or in the private sector pursuing careers in health policy, biotechnology, or bioethics. The law curriculum prepares those who choose to practice medicine for the legal aspects of running a private medical practice.

Why consider a combined degree? If you’re ready to take on the extra time and commitment, a combined degree can maximize your options and opportunities after you complete med school . The Association of American Medical Colleges offers a complete list of medical schools with combined degree programs. Here’s our overview of the most popular degrees to pursue while earning an MD: the MS, MPH, MBA, JD, and PhD.

Medical school dual degrees

MD/MS (Master of Science)

Medical students with a specific research interest can often pursue a Master of Science degree. At many universities, MS degrees are offered through the school of medicine, so it can be fairly easy to apply for complete a master's in a health-science field.

Usually, students finish the first two years of medical school, then take a year of coursework towards their master's degree before returning to complete the final two years of their medical program. Depending on the school and the field, a combined MD/MS takes between five and six years of full-time study.

MD/MPH (Master of Public Health)

Public health degrees cover subjects from biostatistics and epidemiology to women's health, disease control and preventive medicine. Graduates of MD/MPH programs can combine their clinical expertise with knowledge of public-health issues, giving them the background for careers in research, policy, advocacy and consulting.

Most students apply for admission to the school of public health during their second year of medical school and begin coursework after the second or third year.

MD/MBA (Master of Business Administration)

The MD/MBA attracts students who plan to serve on the executive team at a hospital or health-care facility, as a high-level executive in the healthcare industry or as a consultant. The MD/MBA can also be enormously useful to doctors with private practices, which call for management skills and business savvy.

If you're thinking of this route, you must complete prerequisite coursework for medical school and business school prior to matriculation at medical school. You must also take the GMAT as well as the MCAT . In addition, certain business schools have work requirements and recommendation preferences that differ from medical schools.

MD/JD (Juris Doctor)

JD/MD programs are typically suited to students who intend to work in government and policy, to serve on the executive team of a hospital, to practice as lawyer focusing on medical issues, or to practice forensic medicine. If you're considering this course, you'd be well advised to prepare for and take the LSAT before you start medical school. Gaining admission to both the law and medical school is no small feat at a top-tier university.

Students who pursue the MD/JD generally apply to the law program at the university in their first or second year of medical school. Because special arrangements must be made for this joint degree, you should discuss your path with the admissions committees at both schools.

MD/PhD and Medical Scientist Training Programs

Students who are interested in a career in academic investigative medicine choose the MD/PhD path, garnering the clinical skills of medical school while becoming an expert in a specific research field. Typically, MD/PhD programs  take about seven or eight years to complete and incorporate intensive, long-term research in the biomedical sciences. After graduation, the MD/PhD student usually works as a researcher or professor at a teaching hospital. These students may also earn substantial salaries working as medical scientists at private health-care companies.

A number of U.S. medical schools allow students to pursue a combined MD/PhD, of which the most well recognized are members of the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). Students who are admitted to these highly competitive programs receive full tuition coverage, living expenses and a stipend.

Dual and Joint Programs

Main navigation.

Students interested in completing more than one graduate degree may be interested in our MD/PhD, dual MBA/MS or joint JD/PHD/MS programs. Please contact [email protected] for questions regarding any of the below programs.

Students interested in a career-oriented toward bioengineering and medicine can pursue the combined MD/PhD program. Stanford provides two ways to earn an MD/PhD:

  • US citizens and permanent residents can apply to the  Medical Scientist Training Program  and can be accepted with funding from both the MD and PhD programs with stipend/tuition. They can then select a bioengineering laboratory for their PhD.
  • Students not admitted to the Medical Scientist Training Program must apply and be admitted separately to the MD program and the PhD program of their choice.

The PhD degree is administered by the Department of Bioengineering. To be formally admitted as a PhD degree candidate in this combined degree program, the student must apply through normal departmental channels and must have earned or have plans to earn an MS in bioengineering or another engineering discipline at Stanford or another university. The MS requires 45 units of coursework, which consists of core bioengineering courses, technical electives, seminars and 6 unrestricted units. In addition, students will be expected to pass the Department of Bioengineering PhD qualifying examination. For students fulfilling the full MD requirements who earned their master’s-level engineering degree at Stanford, the Department of Bioengineering will waive its normal departmental requirement that the 15 units applied toward the PhD degree (beyond the master’s degree level) be formal course work. Consistent with the university’s PhD requirements, the department will instead accept 15 units comprised of courses, research or seminars that are approved by the student’s academic advisor and the department chair. Students not completing their MS engineering degree at Stanford will be required to take 15 units of formal course work in engineering-related areas, as determined by their academic advisor.

Dual MBA/MS

Stanford offers the opportunity to pursue a dual MS/MBA, which combines its world-leading programs in engineering and business. Admitted students fulfill the degree requirements for each degree with advising from BioE and GSB. Students may choose to pursue the dual MS/MBA concurrently or consecutively.

Candidates interested in pursuing the dual MS/MBA must apply to and be accepted by the other program separately, then notify the BioE program or GSB. Candidates may apply concurrently to both programs or apply to the dual degree program during the first year as an MBA or MS student.

For more information about applying to the MBA and BioE MS program, please consult the  MBA admissions website  and  BioE graduate admissions website.

Joint JD/MS/PhD

The School of Law and the Department of Bioengineering offer joint programs leading to either a JD degree combined with an MS degree in Bioengineering or to a JD combined with a PhD in Bioengineering.

The JD/MS and JD/PhD degree programs are designed for students who wish to prepare themselves intensively for careers in areas relating to both law and bioengineering. Students interested in either joint degree program must apply and gain entrance separately to the School of Law and the Department of Bioengineering and, as an additional step, must secure permission from both academic units to pursue degrees in those units as part of a joint degree program. Interest in either joint degree program should be noted on the student’s admission applications and may be considered by the admission committee of each program. Alternatively, an enrolled student in either the Law School or the Bioengineering Department may apply for admission to the other program and for joint degree status in both academic units after commencing study in either program.

Joint degree students may elect to begin their course of study in either the School of Law or the Department of Bioengineering. Faculty advisers from each academic unit will participate in the planning and supervising of the student’s joint program. Students must be enrolled full time in the Law School for the first year of law school, and, at some point during the joint program, may be required to devote one or more quarters largely or exclusively to studies in the Bioengineering program regardless of whether enrollment at that time is in the Law School or the Department of Bioengineering. At all other times, enrollment may be in the graduate school or the Law School, and students may choose courses from either program regardless of where enrolled. Students must satisfy the requirements for both the JD and the MS or PhD degrees as specified in the Stanford Bulletin or elsewhere.

The Law School shall approve courses from the Bioengineering Department that may count toward the JD degree, and the Bioengineering Department shall approve courses from the Law School that may count toward the MS or PhD degree in Bioengineering. In either case, approval may consist of a list applicable to all joint degree students or may be tailored to each student’s program. The lists may differ depending on whether the student is pursuing an MS or a PhD in Bioengineering.

In the case of a JD/MS program, no more than 45 units of approved courses may be counted toward both degrees. In the case of a JD/PhD program, no more than 54 units of approved courses may be counted toward both degrees. In either case, no more than 36 units of courses that originate outside the Law School may count toward the law degree. To the extent that courses under this joint degree program originate outside of the Law School but count toward the law degree, the Law School credits permitted under Section 17(1) of the Law School Regulations shall be reduced on a unit-per-unit basis, but not below zero.

The maximum number of Law School credits that may be counted toward the MS or PhD in Bioengineering is the greater of: (i) 15 units; or (ii) the maximum number of units from courses outside of the department that MS or PhD candidates in Bioengineering are permitted to count toward the applicable degree under general departmental guidelines or in the case of a particular student’s individual program. Tuition and financial aid arrangements will normally be through the school in which the student is then enrolled.

Dual Degree: JD/MBA

The dual JD/MBA program satisfies this need, offering insight into the business and legal aspects of commerce and providing a strong foundation for a career in both law and business. Graduates of the JD/MBA program have pursued careers in law firms, corporate counsel offices, entrepreneurship, general business organizations, investment and accounting firms, nonprofit agencies and government institutions.

While the JD and MBA degrees typically require five years of study when pursued independently, the dual degree program takes only four years to complete. The first two years are spent at the School of Law , the third year is spent at NYU Stern, and the fourth year is divided between the two schools.

Program Structure

The JD/MBA dual degree comprises a total of 122 credits. Students must complete 51 credits at NYU Stern and 71 credits at the School of Law, making it possible to complete the degree requirements for both programs in four years of full-time study—as opposed to the five years typically required to complete both degrees independently.

JD/MBA students are required to register at the School of Law for five semesters and at NYU Stern for three semesters. To view a sample schedule, visit the MBA Academic Affairs website .

Admission to the JD/MBA Program

For the 2024 NYU Stern Dual Degree application, please visit the Dual Degree Application page.

Applicants to the JD/MBA program will complete a joint application that is evaluated independently by each school. While no additional admissions standards are applied to dual degree applications at either school, students qualify for the dual degree program only upon admission to both NYU Stern and the School of Law. Applicants will only be considered for admission to the dual degree program if they are first offered admission to NYU Law’s JD program.

Students who are already enrolled at the School of Law may apply to the JD/MBA program in their first or second year, by the application deadline.

JD/MBA dual degree applicants must use NYU Stern’s dual degree application. They cannot apply using the Consortium application or NYU Stern’s MBA application.

Tuition & Financial Aid

JD/MBA students pay full tuition and fees at the school through which they are registered each semester. If a student exceeds the maximum number of per-semester credits and/or courses permitted by the school in which she/he is registered, the tuition and fees for the additional credits must be paid to that school.

All JD/MBA applicants are considered for merit-based scholarships. No additional materials are required. Some JD/MBA students may be admitted early to the dual degree program. These students will be considered for scholarships both in the year they are admitted and the year of enrollment at NYU Stern. Financial aid, including federal loans, private loans and scholarships, is administered by the school at which a student is registered in a particular semester. In addition, students may be eligible to obtain Teaching Fellowship or Graduate Assistantship positions, many of which offer tuition remission, at the school in which they are registered in a given semester.

View detailed information on School of Law and Stern MBA scholarships and financial aid.

Career Services

Students are encouraged to take advantage of all career counseling and placement services at both the School of Law and NYU Stern throughout the dual degree program. Career counselors are available to aid students in areas such as resume preparation, interviewing techniques, networking and career option assessment. JD/MBA students should become familiar early in the program with career services offered at each school.

The Office of Career Services (OCS) at the School of Law begins working with students in November of their first year. Typically, JD/MBA students will explore traditional legal internships during the summer after their first and second years in the program, and then pursue business opportunities in their third summer (following their first year of study at NYU Stern). JD/MBA students have access to OCS throughout the dual degree program.

The Careers Team  at Stern can help JD/MBA students pursue an internship as well as full-time employment in business. Dual degree students who complete the NYU Stern Ignite program during their first year of study at NYU Stern are eligible to participate in the summer internship recruiting process. Ignite consists of required and optional workshops, panel discussions, mini-courses, Q&A sessions, mock interviews, resume critiques and functionally-specific strategy groups. In addition, JD/MBA students are eligible to participate in the full-time recruiting process at NYU Stern once they have completed all OCD requirements.

Student Life

Dual degree students are encouraged to become involved in campus life at both schools. There are dozens of student clubs and organizations at both the School of Law  and NYU Stern . Students are also encouraged to participate in the JD/MBA Association , which is dedicated specifically to the interests of JD/MBA students.

IU School of Medicine’s MD curriculum trains well-rounded physicians by holistically incorporating training in basic sciences, clinical care, hospital system sciences, ethics and more. Yet some students want more. Pursuing a dual degree allows these students to adjust the traditional four-year MD education schedule to complete an additional complementary degree such as a PhD, MBA, JD, MPH or MS.

Students enrolled in MD dual degree programs first complete Phase 1 (pre-clinical education) of the MD curriculum . At the end of Phase 1, dual degree students transition to their graduate programs to complete those degree requirements. Dual degree students return to the MD program to begin clinical clerkships at the conclusion of their graduate degree.

The process for pursuing dual degrees is highly customized for each student at IU School of Medicine. Students interested in pursuing a dual degree work one-on-one with a lead advisor and the Mentoring and Advising Program (MAP)  team to craft a personalized plan of study. Many dual degree plans coordinate with the MD curriculum, often reducing the additional time required to complete both degrees.

Dual Admissions
