Narrative Essay on How I spent my holiday

Narrative essay generator.

Holidays hold a special place in everyone’s life, offering a respite from the routine of daily tasks and providing an opportunity to explore, relax, and create unforgettable memories. This year, I decided to spend my holiday in a way that was both enriching and exhilarating. I ventured on a journey to a small coastal town, renowned for its pristine beaches, rich culture, and vibrant local life. This narrative essay unfolds the experiences, discoveries, and personal growth I encountered during my holiday.

The Journey Begins

My adventure commenced with the excitement of traveling to a place I had never visited before. The anticipation built up as I packed my bags, ensuring I had everything needed for a week of exploration. The journey to the coastal town was a scenic delight, with winding roads flanked by lush greenery and the occasional glimpse of the ocean’s horizon promising a serene escape.

Exploring the Coastal Town

Upon arrival, the beauty of the town exceeded my expectations. The air was filled with the salty breeze of the sea and the streets buzzed with the energy of daily life. My first day was spent wandering through the town, taking in the sights and sounds. I visited local markets, where I marveled at the craftsmanship of the artisans and indulged in the town’s culinary delights, tasting dishes that were a fusion of traditional recipes and the bounty of the sea.

The Heart of Nature

The following days were dedicated to exploring the natural wonders surrounding the town. I embarked on hikes through nearby trails, each revealing breathtaking views of the landscape. The highlight was a trek to a secluded beach, accessible only by a narrow path through the cliffs. The effort was rewarded with a serene beach, untouched by the hustle and bustle of tourist spots. Here, I spent hours swimming in the clear waters, reading under the shade of palm trees, and reflecting on the simple pleasures of life.

Cultural Immersion

My holiday was not just about relaxation but also about immersing myself in the local culture. I attended a traditional dance performance, where the rhythmic beats and expressive movements of the dancers told stories of the town’s history and folklore. I also participated in a cooking class, learning to prepare local dishes that combined fresh seafood with exotic spices, gaining not only culinary skills but also insights into the lifestyle and traditions of the people.

The Bond of Friendship

One of the most unexpected and rewarding aspects of my holiday was the friendships I formed. Whether it was conversations with local residents, sharing stories with fellow travelers, or the camaraderie with the host of my accommodation, these connections added depth to my experience. Through these interactions, I gained a richer understanding of the world from different perspectives, reminding me of the value of openness and the universal language of kindness.

Reflections and Realizations

As my holiday drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the journey. Beyond the relaxation and enjoyment, it was a period of personal growth and learning. I had stepped out of my comfort zone, challenged myself to try new things, and embraced the unfamiliar. This holiday taught me the importance of slowing down, appreciating the moment, and the joy of discovering new places and cultures.

My holiday in the coastal town was more than just a break from routine; it was a journey of discovery, connection, and personal growth. It reminded me of the beauty of our world, the diversity of its people, and the shared experiences that bind us. As I returned home, I brought back not only souvenirs and photographs but memories that will last a lifetime and a renewed sense of adventure, ready to explore what lies beyond the horizon.

Basic Outline for Composing an Essay on “How I Spent My Last Holiday”

Here is a basic outline that will help you to write a good composition about how you spent your last holiday:

Introduction

You need to begin your essay with a catchy opening sentence that would grab your reader’s attention. Then quickly introduce the topic or purpose of your essay, and say where you went for the holiday and what you did.

Body Paragraphs

Just like you would do in the body of any other essay, divide your holiday experience into several key events or activities.

Then describe each event or activity in details in different paragraphs. Remember that, as much as possible, each paragraph should focus on a specific event or activity.

The number of paragraphs would depend on the number of words the essay is expected to cover.

You can tell whether the holiday experience met your expectations, and how you feel about it even at the point of penning down your essay. Then state whether you plan to do anything in the future drawing inspiration from your holiday experience.

The following are sample essays of different word counts on how I spent my last holiday. You can choose any composition that comes close to your own holiday experience and use it to craft yours.

My Relaxing Holiday 200 Words

My last holiday was amazing! I did not travel to any new or interesting location, but I had a lot of fun staying home. I took time to enjoy early morning sleep every day. This alone felt like a treat after waking up early for school the entire term.

In the afternoons, I went outside to play with my friends. We played the soccer ball around in the park, and would enjoy pretending to famous athletes.

Sometimes during the holiday, it would rain. And when that happened, I just stayed inside and got cozy. I got a good book and devoured it with a mug of hot chocolate by my side. I also liked watching funny movies with my family and munching on popcorn.

In some evenings, we had barbecues in the backyard. We grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, while Dad told us stories about when he was a kid. I don’t think that anything can feel more special than spending so much time together.

Although I did not travel anywhere, my holiday was full of fun and relaxation. I feel recharged and ready to go back to school now!

My Last Holiday Adventure 250 Words

Since I have been spending my holidays, none had been as enjoyable as the last one. When we vacated last term, I spent two weeks at home in order to assist my parents in farm work. After this, I left for Onitsha in order to visit some places of interest.

I visited the modern and popular Niger bridge which links Onitsha and Asaba, Mid-West. I also visited the famous Onitsha Main Market. It has no rival in comparison in West Africa just as Ibadan Liberty Stadium has no comparison in West Africa. When I was being taken round the great Onitsha Main Market by a friend, I observed that traders in their respective stalls felt at home. Some of them tuned in their radio sets. They were happy.

I spent one week at Onitsha and departed for Enugu. When I was at Enugu I visited the Eastern Nigeria Parliament, and I saw Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s Statue just close to the house of Assembly. I also visited Enugu Airport and several other places of interest. I spent five days in Enugu and departed for Lagos by a train. “Lagos Limited”, and that was my first time of entering train. When I reached Lagos, I hardly believed that it was a town in Nigeria. It was very beautiful indeed just like London.

When I was in Lagos, I went to the House of Representatives, the Senate, National Stadium, Air- port, Tinubu Square and other places of interest.

I spent 5 days in Lagos and returned home to resume School. I wrote a story on all my observations in the journey.

My Last Holiday Essay 300 Words

Last summer, I went on a trip that I will not easily forget. This is because it meant much more to me than just a vacation; rather, my perception was changed.

I had never been in Thailand before the holiday but only heard of its beauty. Finally visiting the country made my holiday worthwhile. The place was so different from home! Their market was busy with many colorful items for sale and their food was so delicious. I tried several new and amazing dishes, and they were all lovely. While in Thailand, I couldn’t fail to notice how beautiful their temples are with roofs gold plated and other carvings done wonderfully.

I am an outdoor kind of person. That is why spending time in nature during my holiday made me very happy. Some days I would hike through forests while others would find me relaxing at the beach. On one fine morning, I woke up early to witness sunrise over New Zealand’s mountains. It was simply breathtaking and that made me feel alive.

Lastly, to add some holiday fun into it; i did some daring activities too. For instance, skydiving and bungee jumping were included in my itinerary. Although at first scared, it turned out pretty awesome! I learned that it’s good to challenge yourself and try new things sometimes.

Looking back on my last holiday, I feel very grateful for all the experiences I had. I discovered a lot of new things and also made new friends. Yes, the holiday is over, but the memories I made will stay with me forever.

From the samples above, you can see that the key to writing a good essay about your holiday is to engage your readers with descriptive details and thoughtful reflections.

How to Write an Essay on How You Spent Your Summer Vacation

Last Updated: January 4, 2020

This article was co-authored by Alexander Peterman, MA . Alexander Peterman is a Private Tutor in Florida. He received his MA in Education from the University of Florida in 2017. This article has been viewed 56,407 times.

Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

Step 1 Look back on mementos you kept from the summer.

  • These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

Step 2 Make a list of the things you’ve done over summer vacation.

  • A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

Step 3 Write about a memorable moment.

  • For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

Step 4 Create an outline...

  • For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
  • Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
  • Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

Step 1 Focus on your feelings, interactions, and thoughts.

  • Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

Step 2 Use your 5 senses to explain your experiences.

  • Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

Step 3 Describe activities you did in each place you went.

  • For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

Step 4 Choose precise, descriptive adjectives.

  • Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

Step 5 Revise and edit your essay carefully.

  • Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
  • Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
  • Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

Structuring Your Essay

Step 1 Start with a strong introduction.

  • Make sure your conclusion doesn’t just copy the introduction.

Tips for Writing a "What I Did on Vacation" Essay

  • English Grammar
  • M.Ed., Education Administration, University of Georgia
  • B.A., History, Armstrong State University

Are you required to write an essay about your summer vacation or your holiday break? This can be a tough assignment to tackle at first glance. But if you think about it, there are lots of interesting things that happen on your vacation that others might enjoy reading about. The key to success is to zero in on the experiences, people, or situations that made your vacation unique.

Summer vacation can be busy or lazy, funny or serious. You may have traveled with your family, worked every day, fallen in love, or coped with a difficult situation. To start your essay, you'll need to choose a topic and tone.

Family Vacation Essay Topic Ideas

If you traveled with your family, you may have some great stories to tell. After all, every family is crazy in its own way. Want some proof? How many Hollywood films have themes about family holidays or trips? Those films are popular because they enable us to glimpse inside the crazy family lives of others. Alternatively, you may have a more serious story to tell.

Consider these funny topics:

  • Why I'll Never Go Back to (insert place name)
  • How (insert name) Drove Me Crazy in Five Days
  • Traveling to (insert city) Then and Now
  • The Hazards of Traveling With a (person or thing)
  • Why You Shouldn't Take a Dog to (insert place)
  • I Left (insert city) But My (lost item) Stayed
  • Why I Couldn't Sleep in (place name)

If your family vacation involved something more serious, think about one of these topics:

  • The Love I Left Behind in (insert place)
  • Saying Good-Bye to (insert person or place)
  • Exploring (place's) Secrets
  • An Emotional Trip

Summer Job Essay Topic Ideas

Not everyone gets to spend the summer having fun; some of us have to work for a living. If you spent your summer at a job, chances are you met a lot of interesting characters, dealt with complicated situations, or even saved the day once or twice. Here are some ideas for summer job topics:

  • The Boss's Day Off
  • The Customer From Hell
  • What I Learned from My Customers
  • Why I'll Never Go Into the ___ Business
  • Six Things I Learned on the Job

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

  • The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
  • The rising action (the beginning of your story)
  • The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
  • The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

Where i travel.

For my last holiday, my family and I decided to explore the coastal beauty of Lagos. We wanted to experience the serene beaches, warm weather, and vibrant culture that this bustling city had to offer. The trip to Lagos was filled with excitement and anticipation as we planned to make the most of our time together.

Beach Days and Adventures

During our holiday in Lagos, we spent most of our time at the mesmerizing beaches, such as Tarkwa Bay and Elegushi Beach. The rhythmic sound of the waves and the golden sands created a peaceful ambiance where we could relax and rejuvenate. We enjoyed building sandcastles, taking long walks along the shore, and indulging in water sports.

Apart from the beaches, we also explored the vibrant city of Lagos. We visited historical landmarks like the National Museum and the Lekki Conservation Centre, where we witnessed the diverse wildlife and lush greenery. Strolling through the bustling markets, such as Balogun and Lekki Markets, allowed us to experience the local culture and taste delicious Nigerian street food.

My mother and I also attended a pottery workshop, where we crafted beautiful pottery pieces. These activities not only added value to my holiday experience but also enriched my knowledge and creativity.

Giving Back to the Community

In the spirit of giving back, my family and I spent a day volunteering at a local charity organization. We distributed food and essentials to the less fortunate, and the smiles on their faces filled our hearts with joy. This act of kindness reminded us of the importance of compassion and gratitude.

My Most Memorable Moment

Among all the wonderful moments, the most memorable one was when we watched the breathtaking sunset at the beach. The sky smeared in shades of orange and pink created a dramatic scene. Despite the personal projects, my holiday was also filled with quality family time. We played board games, watched movies, and cooked together. This time strengthened our bond and made us appreciate each other’s company more than ever.

In conclusion, my last holiday at home was a fruitful and enriching experience. It was a blend of relaxation, learning, and spending quality time with my family. While I missed the thrill of travelling and exploring new places, the holiday presented a different kind of adventure that was equally fulfilling. This experience made me appreciate the comforts and opportunities that my home provides, and I look forward to spending more holidays in such a productive and enjoyable manner.

Holidays are a refreshing break from our routine that helps us de-stress and rejuvenate. While I have always enjoyed spending holidays in various ways, one of my most cherished dream is to spend a holiday in a mountain retreat, amidst the serene beauty of nature.

Embracing Nature

Spending time in nature, breathing in the fresh mountain air, would not only be refreshing, but it would also provide an opportunity to reflect on life and gain a new perspective.

Hiking and Exploring

I have always been an adventure enthusiast. So, a major part of this holiday would be spent hiking through the mountain trails, discovering hidden waterfalls and breathtaking vistas. It offers a sense of accomplishment and ignites a spirit of exploration.

Essay on How I Spent My Summer Vacation At Home – Essay 1 (200 words)

Introduction

Summertime is a treat for all the students struggling the whole year with exams and assignments. This is when they can spend their days doing whatever they want without restrictions and pressure from parents or teachers. Most students and their parents or friends prefer to go to some hill station or village or for other outings to relax. But holidays can also be fun when they are spent staying at home.

Things I Did Staying at Home

This summer, I decided to stay at my home during summer vacation instead of going anywhere for the trip. To spend my time fruitfully, I joined classes where I learned canvas painting, and along with it, I also started learning table tennis. I helped my mom in the kitchen afternoons and assisted my dad with some accounts-related tasks. This was the best time when I felt close to and involved with my family. Then, for the remaining time, I went out with friends. I also spent some time watching movies and web series. Besides entertainment, these shows and movies also taught me some life lessons.

So, this summer vacation was spent getting closer to myself and my family, which I couldn’t do during my academic year. I realized how fruitful and satisfying it could be to spend holidays at home.

Essay on How I Spent My Summer Vacation with My Grandparents – Essay 2 (300 words)

Summer vacation is the most awaited time in a student’s life. It is the time to relax and explore the world around us. This time I decided to spend my summer break with my grandparents. Here’s a brief account of my stay at my grandparents’ house during my summer vacation.

Our Experience at our Grandparents’ Place

My sister and I decided to spend summer vacation with my grandparents this year. They live in a small village near Kutch district, Gujarat. We were unsure about this trip because we had never visited any town before and knew nothing about their lifestyle. But as days passed, we adjusted to their way of living and enjoyed it.

Our stay was full of fun. My grandmother told us funny incidences about my dad as a little mischievous and a notorious kid. She told us how he used to play pranks on his school teachers and their neighbors. She also told us how my sister and I behaved when we were young. She told us we were as notorious as our dad.

One day my grandfather took us to the Great Ran of Kutch, located in the Thar Desert and one of the world’s largest salt deserts. We took a camel ride and stayed there till the sunset. After spending some quality time there, we went to the main market. My grandma told us about Kutch’s unique handicrafts and how many women make their living by selling different embroidered clothes. We bought an embroidered kurta for dad and a sari for mom. After this, we headed back home and helped grandma with dinner. The next day we went with our grandpa to a farm, and he taught us various farming techniques, which was fun. We indulged in different activities each day.

This was one of the best trips where we had loads of fun and learned about Kutch’s culture and heritage. I am looking forward to more trips like these.

Essay on How I Spent My Summer Vacation in My Village – Essay 3 (400 words)

For those living in metropolitan cities, summer holidays mean watching movies and television series, hanging out with friends, or surfing the internet. This consumes all of our time. But, this summer, spending time at my aunt’s place in Bhiwani village was an enthralling experience. It seemed like a different world to me.

Knowing Village Culture

The houses in the village are as big as palaces, but still, people are emotionally attached and aware of what is going on in each other’s life. Eating together, understanding situations and opinions of other people, and working together are some of the small things that add to beautiful village life .

Waking up early in the mornings is a practice that most villagers follow. It keeps them healthy and makes their day more productive. So, all the people in the house are required to be awake by 6 in the morning, which initially seemed like a curse to us. My uncle owns a kitchen utensils shop; he opens it at 7 in the morning daily. He left for work before 7 am each day. Most people were seen heading for their work around the same time.

I spent my mornings in the kitchen with all the ladies of the house, doing preparations for breakfast and lunch. I also helped them clean up the house after the kitchen tasks. In the afternoon, my brother and I took a round of the village and delivered lunch at my uncle’s shop. The rest of the afternoon was spent in slumber after having a heavy diet and loads of gossip.

The evening time in the village was the time for which I waited with a lot of excitement. One evening we went to the village well where women went to fetch drinking water. It was great to see them balance the pots full of water and walk back in a row. But the main treat was to see the confidence and happiness on their faces. The village also encompassed a big playground that used to be full of kids during the evening hours.

Our aunt and uncle also took us to the farm to show us the beautiful process of growing and nurturing fruits and vegetables. Looking at the farmers putting so much effort into their harvest and faces during the harvesting time was a great sight.

I also went to one of the panchayats going on in the village under a banyan tree, where issues of the village were being solved by the elders of the village with the consent of all other people of the village. This is where I witnessed a small example of democracy.

The simplicity of life in the village is where its beauty lies. My visit to the village always teaches me compassion and love towards our family.

Essay on How I Spent My Summer Vacation in Hill Station – Essay 4 (500 words)

The summer season is mainly known for the heat waves and holidays we students get. It’s a great time for students to go for a stress-relieving trip and to be closer to nature, for which they don’t get time during their hectic schedule throughout the year.

We Decided to Go to a Hill Station

Our family decided to go for a summer trip to a hill station this year. Many beautiful places in India are known for their scenic beauty, such as Mussoorie, Ooty, Wilson Hills, Kufri, Nainital, Manali, Kerala, and Rishikesh. After a long discussion about which hill station to go for, we finally settled for Shimla.

Our Trip to Shimla

We all went there via road in our car and reached there in the morning. Then, we directly went to the hotel that we had already booked. Shimla has everything to lure the tourists, from lavish hotels to picturesque locations and mall roads to shopping streets full of people from different cultures.

We had planned the trip for 5 days. So in the evening of our first day of the trip, we went to the mall road and Jhaku hills which are known as the main tourist spots in the city. In the evening, many different activities are going on there. It was amazing to witness the nightlife of Shimla. We visited the Footloose Discotheque, full of vibrant people and buzzed with great music.

Our next day included traveling on the toy train. This toy train here runs from Kalka to Shimla. There are only 3 such trains in our country, and one of them is here. It’s an amusing experience to travel through them irrespective of the fact that they are slow. The evening was spent doing snow adventures such as skiing and bungee jumping.

The next days were spent visiting places near Shimla, such as Chail, Kufri, and Chitkul. These places can be visited for some snow adventure besides enjoying their beautiful scenic beauty.

Shimla is also a good treat for foodies like me. A bizarre thing about Shimla’s food is – that tiny diners or cafes are offering just fast food, a variety of teas and cold drinks, or fancy eateries that have overpriced alcohol on the menus – there is no ground in between. We had salami burgers at Beekays, which were delicious.

During all these days filled with loads of activities to do, we used to get tired in the evening, but the nightlife there or just staring at the starry sky gave us an immense sense of joy and filled us with new energy. There is enchanting music from tall trees standing upright there, curvy roads that make one look at those beautiful hills from all angles, and that lively breeze that fills one’s soul and heart with ecstasy.

We came back to Delhi after spending five fun-filled days in Shimla. The memory of this trip is fresh in my head. Shimla is indeed the queen of hill stations. I would love to revisit the place.

Essay on How I Spent My Last Summer Vacation – Essay 5 (600 words)

Summer is the most awaited time in any student’s academic year. Despite the scorching sun and blazing heat, these months have always brought a peculiar type of calmness to my soul that oozes freedom from monotony and dullness. As it is time for vacation, it is the time to explore, wander, plan, and much more. Summer vacations are always fun, but my summer holidays were especially memorable. What made it special was that it was my first advent on foreign land or, I might say, “lands.”

My First Foreign Trip

The year 2017 was my last academic session in school. So, before going to college, a complete family gateway to exotic lands was the gift I got from my family. I could not have asked for more. Our travel plan was a perfect mixture of fairy Disneyworld and glamorous Hong Kong and then to the multi-ethnic country island of Malaysia.

On the very next day, when my summer vacation began, I found myself at terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji airport, Mumbai, looking for my flight boarding pass and posting stories about it on my social media accounts. My parents, siblings, and cousins surrounded me. There was excitement on everyone’s face. Being a full extended family vacation with all my cousins, aunts, and uncles, it seemed super fun from the time we set out in cabs to the airport. It was not my first time being amidst the clouds, but it was my first international flight giving a magnificent view of the night lights of the complete city, and looking at that, I knew that this trip was going to be a one-of-a-kind experience for me.

Landing in Hong Kong, I was taken aback by the mere sight of their airport. I think they lived to the “first impression is the last impression.” I was amazed beyond imagination, but somewhere, I knew this was just the beginning. The first day at this beautiful place mainly consisted of exploring the streets of this breathtaking city, which was rich in fashion, food, tech, and everything that screamed modern and at the same time archaic in their way of life.

The next place we visited was what all of us had dreamed of visiting for a long. It was the mesmerizing Disneyland. The first thing that caught my attention was not the people around dressed in Disney characters or the marvelous expanse of the space and rides and shops but the castle at the far end – The Disney Castle. It was just spectacular. The very charm and enchantment of it knocked me out of breath. The fireworks at night after a complete parade show make you wonder if you had crossed a line and entered the fantasy world. It had been much more than I imagined, even in my make-believe.

The next was a traveling day as we moved to our next destination Malaysia. The City gateway was the complete opposite of where we came from. This city did not have many skyscrapers, but the beautifully spread horizontal city was rich in culture and diversity. The exquisiteness of mosques, museums, and heritage sites perfectly blend with the city’s modern lifestyle and layout. The hilltop parts of the country, like Genting Highlands, could be called heaven on earth. The beaches here offer a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. I am glad we choose this as our last destination during this trip.

This has been one of the best holidays I have ever gone on. I saw so many beautiful places, had great experiences, and spent a lot of time with my loving family. My last summer vacation was indeed the best so far.

Long Essay on How I Spent my Summer Vacation – Essay 6 (800 Words)

Summer vacation is the most awaited time of the year by the students. With almost a year of classes, schedules, tests, and examinations behind them, they look forward to a joyous and relaxed month. Summer vacation could be spent in many ways, depending on your choices and preferences—some like playing and visiting places, while others prefer watching TV and their favorite movies.

I wouldn’t say I like watching TV, even when my parents don’t object. My heart craves the woods and the serenity of nature, away from the hustle-bustle of everyday existence. I have always wanted to visit forests and similar landscapes in the lap of nature.

Below I have narrated a journey to a few places I took during my last summer vacation. Though I returned and joined the school after that, the memories of the journey and the places are deeply engraved in my heart.

The journey started with a visit from my town to my ancestral village and then to a wildlife reserve, which I am sure you too will plan to go on this vacation, after going through my experiences.

At Village with my Grandparents

The journey began on the next day of my summer vacation. My father made these arrangements well in advance, supposedly when I was preparing for my exams. When I came back home after writing my last exam, my mother and sister were already packing for the journey. Though I knew we would visit our grandparent’s village and stay there for a couple of days, I had no idea about the further planned trip.

The journey to the village was smooth. We started well ahead of the train’s arrival time and reached the platform before its arrival time. It is three hours of a train journey from my city to the grandparent’s village, passing through lush green agricultural fields and glimpses of village life.

When we got off the train, I saw my grandfather waving and walking toward us, accompanied by my cousins. After exchanging initial greetings, we walked towards our house a couple of kilometers from the station. Though there is a road to reach the house, we took rather secluded trails, passing through the fields.

Something is mesmerizing about an Indian villages ; the cool breeze, the peace and calm, the smell and sound of cattle, and the distant sound of a pumping set from the fields entices you and makes you cherish every passing moment.

The food, milk, and even water taste much better in the village than in the city. We stayed in the village for four days, during which I met many of my relatives, elders, and friends from the village. I even went to our family’s agricultural field and learned a few tips for farming. Four days passed quickly, and the day soon arrived when we had to move on a further journey. However, it appeared that a few surprises were waiting for me.

Trip to the Dudhwa National Park

When the day arrived, I was in for two surprises firstly, that we were going to “Dudhwa National Park” and secondly that my grandparents were also going with us.

Dudhwa tiger reserve is a protected area spanning over 1280 sq km in Uttar Pradesh. It stretches across the districts of Lakhimpur Kheri and Bahraich, sharing the northeastern boundary with Nepal.

We boarded the train to Bareilly from Varanasi, an unforgettable overnight journey spent with family and like-minded wildlife enthusiasts, traveling to the same destination as us. From Bareilly, we took a connecting train to Dudhwa, which is approximately a distance of 12 kilometers.

We reached the park in the evening and stayed in a simple yet comfortable resort, having all the comforts and basic amenities. The staff was accommodating, and the food was simply delicious. The resort was securely surrounded by forest on all s, use and was well guarded. We fell to sleep listening to the voices of jungle fowls and animals from a distance.

The next morning we all woke up early and got ready for the jungle safari. The forest deforests deforest department organized the safari in anth a guard and an experienced guide onboard. As soon as we entered the forest, we started seeing birds and animals, which we had only seen in books and television. Birds like Bengal Florican and great slaty woodpecker were a delight to watch. Different species of lizards were also seen crawling to cover.

As we progressed deeper, many species of deer- swamp deer, barasingha, and chital came into view. We were also lucky enough to spot barking deer, which is very difficult due to its shy nature. We were lucky enough to spot a tiger lurking in the bushes on our third and last day. With this last sighting, our journey ended, and we headed back home on the same evening.

Summer vacation is the best time in any student’s life. A month or more of a fun time at your disposal is nothing less than a blessing. There are several ways to spend a summer vacation, although we must spend it in such a way that we learn new things and gain new experiences. Also, take care not to harm or disregard anyone during your enjoyment.

Write a paragraph on my last vacation

My last vacation was so amazing. My name is(..). I study in class (..). I loved the last trip that I and my family took. We went to visit and entertain cancer patients. We agreed to go on vacation for my father and mother, and bring some presents for young children so that they are happy with it. We already knew about such visits from a family member.

My father told us that there is a social responsibility in our visits to cancer patients. And that there is respect for time and we should not prolong our visit. We must go with a smile and carefully choose the type of dress and speech so as not to affect the psyche of others.

My father also warned us not to show any kind of pity, because that affects the patient’s psychology very much. So it was very important that we pay attention to all these things.

We went there and all our concern was to add a smile to them and to help them through support and love. We spent the day with them but my happiest moment was when I managed to make the first person I met smile. That upset me so much.

This day is one of the most beautiful days for me, and it was a very useful holiday because it makes us feel the suffering of others. I would very much like to repeat this visit and support them a lot and make friendships with them.

Short paragraph on my last vacation

My last vacation was very interesting as I was able to participate in one of the activities that I dreamed of participating in for a long time.

I love to play tennis a lot. I joined one of the small clubs in my area to learn this game and train until I can become professional.

The coach told us that there is an upcoming tournament and we can participate in it to determine our level. So I loved joining so much and told him I wanted to join.

Indeed, I was able to participate and train well before the tournament to raise my level of concentration and improve my general level.

At the time of the championship, I was fully prepared, and I went and played with confidence and happiness, despite feeling a little scared, but I quickly recovered myself and managed to win and get the third place. I am looking forward to improving my level in the upcoming tournaments and achieving first place.

Paragraph about last vacation

Last vacation I was able to enjoy a lot visiting my grandfather’s town and gathering to attend a relative’s wedding. I enjoyed a lot getting to know my family members, talking and getting close to my ancestors.

They miss us so much because of the distance between us. We live in the city of (type the city name here). My grandfather lives in the city of (type the name of the city). So we travel there by train,

I really loved riding the bullet train and seeing the countries between us. I really liked the simple life in their city. There are many green spaces and wide spaces, and there is no big traffic congestion like my city.

I was able to learn to use the kite, and I found that all of my relatives enjoy playing it more than electronic games, and they race to raise it high in the air, and the person who can lift it the most is the victor.

So I liked it so much I laughed and had fun and ran a lot more than ever. I would very much like to try again.

Describe Your Last Vacation

My last vacation did not have many outings and activities, or traveling abroad due to the Corona pandemic. But I can describe it as wonderful because the family members were able to gather and enjoy some simple games and talk.

It was a special holiday filled with popcorn and sweets and watching modern movies. I enjoyed a lot of playing cards with my father and my grandfather who was a big fraud and I didn’t know about that. He made me laugh a lot and I learned some tricks from him.

I loved sitting at home this holiday too because I was able to help my mum make more food and learned some great new recipes.

I find that it is a wonderful vacation despite the absence of my friends around me or being in luxury places or tourism in other cities . We enjoyed the simple things and the holiday went by without any problems.

Essay about my last vacation

There is no doubt that I liked my last vacation very much, as I was able to get to know my family members from my father’s side during this vacation.

He had many relatives living in the same town but we don’t know each other or even know what we look like, So my father decided to take me and my younger sister and go to stay in the family house and invite the family to gather and get acquainted, so that the younger generations can get to know their relatives and their children, and make friendship.

So we stayed at my grandfather’s house near the lake and enjoyed a lot of barbecue and some fun activities. I would very much like to repeat this experience. It is good to feel that you are with your family and get to know them.

What i did during last vacation essay

Every year I learn a lot of experiences, both good and bad, from which I gain some experience. The last vacation was the best for me, because I was able to benefit a lot from it and learn some new skills that may benefit me in the future, such as learning how to prepare  sweets.

Last holiday I was able to participate in a training course to teach the preparation of sweets professionally. I was able to take back a lot from it as I learned to prepare all kinds of dough, learned how to prepare the cream and coordinate the cake to look completely professional.

I was very happy to learn this craft and I feel that in the future I can benefit from it in one way or another. I am thinking of creating a website or a YouTube channel and posting recipes and preparation methods to teach others Through it.

I work to improve my speaking and public speaking skills and gain some fame in this specialty. Maybe it will be my field of work in the future.

My last vacation with my family

It is great to take advantage of the time we spend in a gathering with the family, especially if it is long. I can say that the last holiday was a long time gathering with my family members due to the spread of the Corona virus.

Therefore, staying in homes was semi-compulsory by the state, and going out only for necessities, and preventive measures must be taken before leaving and returning.

Therefore, there were dangers to my father or mother whenever they went out to fetch food or any other living requirements. So I am very grateful to them.

It was great to be with my family for a long time. In the beginning, it was very difficult and there was some negative energy because we used to go out and do many outdoor activities.

But after a while, sitting became more comfortable, and we became involved in some home activities and hobbies, which helped in soothing the atmosphere, and getting out of boredom and depression.

I really enjoyed doing some activities with my mum like doing yoga, preparing famous meals and playing cards. I found her very cool at that and I didn’t know it, she always beats us and knows a lot of good tricks and moves.

Write about your last vacation

My last vacation was not very interesting, despite the slow return to life after the spread of the deadly Corona virus, however, many families still avoid going out, mixing, and exposing their children or themselves to danger.

Therefore, I could not do many of the normal activities that I used to do before, we only watch TV, play some video games and talk on the Internet.

Certainly there are some happy moments that happen inside the house when all the family members gather and prepare some entertaining meals. We can then perform some games or scenes to add a nice family atmosphere. But I can’t wait to get back to normal life and get out and discover life and gain some new skills and experiences.

My last vacation essay for class 5

My last vacation was special and wonderful. We are now in the summer. There are many places to go and enjoy, such as amusement parks, the beach, picnics in the streets, clubs and cinemas. It was a great vacation, I enjoyed a walk with my family, whether on the beach or in the city.

I learned some new games from my brothers, and my father and we raced a lot. He made me win in some races to make me happy with that.

I also enjoyed going with my mother to shop and buy vegetables, she taught me how to choose some good fruits and vegetables.

I am very happy when I feel that I have learned something new, so I feel that the time I spend is valuable and that I have a role in society. I hope to continue learning and developing.

How did you spend your last vacation essay

I spent the last holiday of this year wandering with some of my close friends, going swimming or playing some electronic games, or playing soccer. Some days we went cycling in town, talking to some friends.

It was a nice vacation and I enjoyed it a lot after what we went through from the Corona crises, not mixing, no wandering and sitting at home.

So it was great to go out and walk with friends and feel the return to normalcy again. And there are some group activities we can do.

How I enjoyed my last vacation essay

The last vacation was a lot of fun and had a lot of funny activities that I enjoyed. I also made some fun new friends, and got to hang out with them a few times, where we could go to the beach and enjoy the sunshine and  swim.

We enjoyed camping and sitting by the fires, eating some snacks while talking and having fun. It was definitely a great vacation more than  the past two years, breathing, meeting new people, gaining some new skills, developing myself, and feeling more confident and fun than I was before.

Sample 1: How I Spend My Summer Vacation Essay

This summer vacation I visited the Ram Temple in Ayodhya with my family and cousins. For our journey, we booked the Vande Bharat tickets and embarked from New Delhi Railway Station. It was an 11-hour-long journey and was full of excitement. I witnessed so many beautiful spots throughout the journey and people were continuously chanting God’s holy name. It was one of the most beautiful journeys I have ever experienced.

When we reached the Lucknow Central Station, the Ticket Collector told us that we’d reached halfway.
It took us another 5 hours to reach the holy city of Ayodhya. After reaching our destination, My brother and I stepped outside to explore the city. Following that, we headed to the Ram Mandir. The temple was huge and very beautiful. It was decorated with colourful lights and flowers. All the people there were looking overwhelmed with emotions.

Inside the temple, we saw the idol of Lord Ram. It was adorned with beautiful jewels made of gold, diamond, and silver! The priests were singing bhajans, and the atmosphere was very peaceful. We prayed and spent some time sitting quietly, feeling the divine presence. My parents told me stories about Lord Ram, and I felt very happy to learn more about him.

After visiting the temple, we explored the city of Ayodhya. We visited other historical places and temples. Each place had its own unique story and charm. We also enjoyed the local food, which was very tasty. My favourite was the special sweets they made in Ayodhya. It was a really special summer break in my life.

Sample 2: How I Spend My Summer Vacation Essay

This summer vacation, I planned to work on my physical and mental health. I joined a fitness centre which was close to my locality, where I was assigned a personal fitness trainer. She was a qualified trainer who asked me about my goals and drafted a fitness and diet routine accordingly. Initially, I took a 1 month- subscription, as I was not sure how good or bad it would turn out to be. The first week was very challenging as I had to work out for 2 hours straight and then practice yoga for 30 minutes. Every day after coming from the fitness centre, I used to complete my homework and read the newspaper.

Within a week, I was able to do 20 pushups in one set and I wanted to set the bar high. So, I planned on doing 40 pushups before completing 1 month at the fitness centre. The trainers were very helpful there and taught me the right way to do each exercise. They made sure I was practising safely and enjoying myself. They also encouraged me at each step, which improved my confidence.

One of the best parts of joining the fitness centre was making new friends. There were many kids my age, and we quickly became friends. We exercised together, cheered each other on, and had a lot of fun. We even played games like tag and basketball in the centre’s sports area. Having friends around made exercising even more enjoyable.

Joining the fitness centre was a fantastic experience. It helped me become stronger, healthier, and more confident. I made new friends and learned a lot about staying fit and healthy. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing my fitness journey.

A Long Essay  on “How I Spend My Summer Vacation”

Summer vacation is one of my favorite times of the year as almost every year me and my family make plans for long vacations. Summer is an ideal time for us to go on stress-free trips and get closer to nature, something we are unable to do throughout the rest of the year due to our hectic schedules.

We generally go to meet our grandparents or go on a trip with family and friends. This year, I went on a trip to the hill stations of Ooty along with my parents, grandparents and cousins. The most important thing about these vacations is the time spent with family during these vacations we make life-long memories.

We started the vacation by going to the native village of our grandparents, which is around 100 km away from the city in which we reside. My cousins and our extended family also joined us in our ancestral home. We then took a train to Ooty.

The train ride was filled with laughter and songs, and I greatly enjoyed the ride. We got to see the beautiful landscapes of India on our way to the destination. We reached our Ooty in the evening. It is a small hill station with beautiful natural scenery and vegetation.

I started the next day with an early morning walk with my grandparents and cousins. I then ate my breakfast after which the whole family traveled around the town. I learnt about the birds and trees of the hill stations. During nights I and my cousins would hear stories from my grandparents. I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. At the end of my trip, we went shopping to take some mementoes to my hometown.

Despite the fact that my summer vacation was longer, the trip was by far the most memorable experience I had at that time. I am very grateful for the time I spent with my family. During the vacation, I not only learnt new things about the natural and cultural heritage of the place but also had a great time with my family. I like summer vacations and have the satisfaction of knowing that I have utilized my time productively.

Everyone loves holidays, whether they are for one day or one month! Students especially look forward to their annual school vacation. Kids plan so many things for their holidays; some want to spend it with their cousins in their grandparent’s or relatives’ house. One thing that never fails to make us smile is the word holiday. Whether we are young or old, we all look forward to holidays. They are the perfect time to relax and take a break from our daily routine. Our days of leisure, are the most important and memorable days of our lives. Let’s understand how important are holidays and ways to enjoy them the most.

Importance of Holiday For Students And Working People

Everyone loves holidays. However, they hold a different level of importance for different people. For students, holidays are the time when they can do extra things apart from their studies. In their daily school lives, students don’t get much time to pursue their hobbies or interests. During holidays, they can explore a new interest or get themselves enrolled to learn new sports. Trying new things is important for a kid’s overall development. Kids also get more time to spend with their families and friends. So, holidays give them the perfect opportunity to do things they cannot do during school days.

Working people equally love holidays as young kids. Their long working hours and hectic lifestyle don’t leave them much time to relax or enjoy their hobbies. So, during the holidays, they relax and rejuvenate. They sleep in late, wake up late and enjoy the whole day with the family. During holidays, they can go on trips with family or friends to rejuvenate.

How To Make The Most Of Your Holidays

To fully utilise the holidays, one should list what they want to do or don’t get to do on their normal days. It could be spending time with friends, learning a new hobby, or sleeping late. Then, as per the time and number of days, start ticking things off the list. A new hobby or sport can be learned if you have long holidays. For a short holiday of a few days, a family trip can be planned. Just remember your holidays are the time to enjoy, relax and have lots of fun.

An essay on ‘holiday’ is a great way to teach your child the importance of relaxing, unwinding and doing better in our lives. Through this essay, they will also learn about various things they can do during holidays. While writing an essay on holidays, kids will learn the value of playing sports and learning new hobbies to become active and smart.

Some noteworthy points about holidays:

1. Why Is A Holiday Important?

Holidays are important as they give us time to relax and rejuvenate. During holidays we get more time with our near ones and can pursue our hobbies.

2. How One Can Spend His/Her Holiday?

How I became the Taliban’s portrait artist

Afghanistan’s new rulers threatened to execute a british journalist. then they found out he could draw.

how i spent my holiday essay in english

By Andrew North

O ne winter morning in 2022 I found myself being pushed, blindfolded, into a Taliban interrogation room in Kabul. A guard I couldn’t see shoved me into a chair. I heard the door close, then nothing. I listened for hints that someone else was in the room, but all I could pick up was my heartbeat and the sound of my own slow, fearful breathing.

I had no idea why the Taliban had taken me. One possibility was that they might be trying to use me as a bargaining chip in their dealings with the West. Afghanistan’s new rulers desperately wanted America to release state funds held in overseas bank accounts, which had been frozen after the old government was overthrown the previous summer. I could be stuck there for a long time.

My speculation was interrupted by a voice to my right telling me, in English, to remove my blindfold. When I did so I saw a powerfully built man sitting at a desk. He wore a black skullcap, and a bulky camouflage jacket which made him look even larger. He had a sharp gaze, but behind his beard his face looked young. “It’s good to have a chance to practise my English,” he said dryly. “All I had were films and YouTube until now.” He had an accent, but otherwise his command of the language seemed pretty flawless to me; I wondered if he had been one of the undercover operatives the Taliban had recruited to facilitate attacks on American targets in Kabul.

For the next hour the man grilled me, trying to get me to admit I was a spy. Had I been to Iran? Which was my favourite Bond film? What was the name of the classified programme that Edward Snowden had revealed? Did I really expect him to believe that I hadn’t seen the mid-noughties Fox drama “Prison Break”? He wrote down my responses. I felt increasingly anxious as I tried to work out where he was going with these questions and how best to answer them.

Suddenly he looked up from his notes and said with an air of finality: “You’re going to be hanged.”

The air went out of my lungs. I couldn’t speak. I just shook my head. While one part of my brain tried to assess the plausibility of this threat, another part was telling me I needed to get help. Nervously, I asked the interrogator if I could use his phone to call my wife, Natalia, who was at home with our two children.

My interrogator raised his eyebrows, as if startled by my temerity. Then to my surprise, he agreed, on condition I didn’t say where I was.

After dialling the number I gave him, he held out his phone towards me, so we could both hear. I imagined Natalia looking at the unknown number on her phone screen, wondering if she should answer. A few rings later, her voice came through.

“Hello,” she said cautiously.

“Is that Natalia?” said my interrogator.

“Yes,” she replied. “Who is this?”

He ignored her question. “Your husband is here,” he said. “Would you like to talk to him?”

Natalia sounded composed, which gave me a momentary surge of strength. I knew she would know what to do. But when the interrogator handed me the phone I felt tears well up. We spoke for a few seconds – enough time for me to tell Natalia that I was alive – then the line went dead. Perhaps his credit had run out.

how i spent my holiday essay in english

A few days later, the metal shutter on my cell door shot open to reveal my interrogator’s piercing eyes. “Your wife has a message for you,” he said. “She tells me you’re an artist. She says your daughter is very upset, and she is asking if you can do a drawing for her.”

I could see he was reading from his phone. Good for Natalia, I thought. She must have found a way to keep the conversation going.

“I don’t have any pen or paper,” I replied. “Here,” he said, passing through a piece of printer paper and a biro. “I will come back later and see what you’ve drawn.”

I had first come to Afghanistan as a BBC reporter in the aftermath of America’s invasion in 2001, and immediately fell in love with the country. Over the next 20 years I spent as much time there as I could, covering the war against the Taliban. I began to draw the people and scenes I came across. I wasn’t exactly a war artist – more a reporter who sketched.

When the Taliban were an insurgent group they had kidnapped many journalists, including friends of mine. After seizing power in August 2021, they seemed willing, at first, to let us report. I arrived there in February 2022 as part of a team covering the humanitarian crisis. It was my third trip back since the country had changed its name to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. As usual, I passed through airport security without difficulty.

The photographer on the assignment, who was Irish, had arrived ahead of me. The previous day I had received a worrying text from him saying that he and two Afghan colleagues had just been stopped by the Taliban. My driver and I went straight to the suburb they had been in when he sent it. Within minutes of our arrival, a Taliban patrol stopped us and locked us up for the night. The next day we were brought to the building in central Kabul where the interrogation room was located.

This prison turned out to be the abandoned headquarters of the old government’s intelligence agency. The National Directorate of Security had been established with the help of the CIA in 2002. Now its building housed the Taliban’s spooks, and was overseen by a former inmate of Guantánamo.

The cell I slept in was down in the bowels of the building. Most of the men incarcerated there during the American occupation would have been suspected of belonging to the Taliban. They had left their mark on the walls around me, which were covered with names, dates and drawings. In one place there was a large heart and a flower, and someone had written the Farsi word for “mother” underneath.

I shared the cell with about a dozen people, most of whom were from provinces associated with resistance to the Taliban. Afghanistan’s new rulers were just as paranoid about internal enemies as the American-backed government had been.

The space was about six metres long and three metres wide. It had a small window near the ceiling, the view obscured by bars and heavy green netting. Mildew marked the wall below. From the ceiling hung a single naked light bulb, which was on 24 hours a day.

A few of my cellmates spoke some English and I had picked up rudimentary Dari, one of the official languages of Afghanistan, when I was posted there for the BBC . Between us we could communicate effectively enough. They treated me with a mixture of kindness and curiosity. On my first day they insisted I take one of the few floor mats to sleep on, because I was their “guest”. Sometimes they mocked me for having only two children. (I once asked a cellmate how many he had. “Five,” he replied proudly. “You should have more. You look like you could still manage it.”)

how i spent my holiday essay in english

When the interrogator came to my cell instructing me to draw, I decided to ask the inmates to sit for me.  I didn’t want to depict my surroundings, in case my interrogator thought I was trying to communicate something about my location. If I drew a fellow prisoner Natalia would at least know I wasn’t being held in solitary confinement.

The first to agree was a man in his early 30s, whom I’ll call Farid. I set to work, using a folded-up prayer mat as a drawing board, taking care not to press the pen too hard and puncture the paper.

I had asked one of my cellmates for the Dari word for “comfortable” – rahat – so I could tell Farid to find a position he could hold for at least ten minutes. I began, as I always did, with a broad outline, paying attention to the way he was resting his arms on his crossed legs. Once I had the main elements in place, I started on the details, like the prayer beads running through his hands.

My cellmates gathered around me as I worked, providing a running commentary as the biro portrait took shape. Having to sketch while they assessed my abilities in real time was slightly unnerving; when they said it was good I was quietly pleased.

About half an hour later, I heard the shutter on the cell door open again. My interrogator reappeared in the window, asking to see what I had produced.“Not bad,” he said, after I passed the drawing through to him. “I’ll send it to your wife.” Then he glanced at the sketch again. “Is there a secret map in there?”

He didn’t seem to be joking. “No,” I said. “I don’t know how I would draw it anyway.”

“I hope not. We will find out,” he replied, and closed the shutter.

I returned to my floor mat, assuming that the brief sketching diversion was over. But a short time later, we all turned to the sound of the cell door opening again. This time, there was a young Talib in the doorway.

He wasn’t one of the usual guards, but I’d seen him a couple of times on my way back and forth to the bathroom, and he had a friendly, almost puckish demeanour. He held up my sketch and asked, “Will you draw me?”

W hen they were first in power, the Taliban made a point of destroying any artwork or sculpture that depicted humans or living things, saying that they contravened Islamic law and encouraged the worship of idols. They blew up the famous Buddha statues in Bamiyan because they considered them idolatrous.

When Taliban fighters marched on Kabul again in August 2021, shopkeepers rushed to paint over pictures of people on their storefronts in anticipation of the same strictures being reimposed. In fact, the new Taliban – among them many veterans of their first regime – were more tolerant of images this time round. SomeThey also embraced television and online video to promote their message.

As I started to work, the power dynamic between myself and the guard seemed to shift. Drawing someone is an intimate experience. They have to let their defences down and allow you to inspect them, in a way which would come across as intrusive, even aggressive, in any other situation.

I peered at his round face, and the soft flat hat he wore, known as a pakol – it was difficult to draw accurately because he wore it at a jaunty angle. He kept moving, and I had to tell him to stay still, which felt like an odd thing to say to your jailer.

how i spent my holiday essay in english

After about ten minutes, I’d done his head and face and a good enough outline of his body, so I turned the sketch round to show him. “Very nice,” he smiled, then added, “Give me your wife’s number. I’ll send it to her.” I tried to finish the portrait but seconds later another guard appeared at the door to tell my puckish Talib he was needed elsewhere.

L ater that day, the door opened again and this time two young Talib guards were standing there, holding pieces of paper in their hands. The word had obviously spread that one of the prisoners could do portraits. My client list was growing.

This time, they invited me to work outside the cell, in the space near the bathroom, where they had set up two chairs for their session. One guard watched over my shoulder as I sketched the other. Once both portraits were done they compared them, giggling and mocking each other’s features.

The younger of the two then took me back to my cell and asked me to do a sketch of his daughter. He handed me his phone, which had an image of a young girl in a ballet dress on the screen. I’d just finished the outline when he was called away. To my astonishment, he left his phone with me.

Part of me was touched that his desire for a sketch of his daughter had led him to make what must have been a serious breach of security protocol. For a moment, I thought about using his phone to call Natalia. But I suspected the signal wouldn’t be strong enough deep in a basement jail, and wasn’t sure what it would achieve even if I could get through. Then the Talib returned and took his phone back.

I f you’re not freed by Thursday, then you’re in until next week,” one of my cellmates told me. “Nothing happens on Friday.” When Friday came round and I was still in the cell, I prepared for a long and wearing weekend. Late that night, I was settling down to sleep when a guard appeared and took me out of the cell.

When he removed my blindfold I found myself back in the interrogation room. This time the Irish photographer and one of his Afghan colleagues were there. Shortly afterwards guards brought in the other Afghan who had been working with the photographer, together with my driver. I felt a surge of relief upon seeing them, even though I had no idea whether it meant good or bad news. My interrogator was sitting across from us. At the end of the room was another man, wearing a sequined cap. From the way others deferred to him, I assumed he was a superior officer.

My interrogator seemed to have lost some of his swagger. I had the impression he’d been called to this meeting at short notice. The Talib in the sequined cap got to the point. “You are free to go,” he said.

He did not explain why we were being freed, nor why we had been held, saying only that he apologised “for any misunderstandings”. To this day, we still don’t know why we were taken, nor who made  the decision to release us.

As we were talking, guards had brought in our bags, equipment and phones. The interrogator watched as I sorted through my things, among them a pouch I had for cash.

“Count it!” he said. There was not a dollar missing. “You see,” he said with a smile, “you can trust the Emirate.” He paused for a moment and then said: “Will you write anything about being here?”

“Maybe,” I said.

“Write good things about us.” ■

Inside the Mountain Stronghold of an Elusive Rebel Movement

As the conflict in Sudan rages on, an army has built its own state within a state — a vision of what the nation could become.

Nicholas Casey and Moises Saman spent two weeks traveling with a rebel group in Sudan to document the civil war there.

  • Aug. 8, 2024

By the time I reached the hilltop over Kadugli in June, the war in Sudan had been raging for 1 year, 2 months and 7 days — more time than the war in Gaza, less than the one in Ukraine. Yet despite having killed many thousands of people and displacing millions more, this brutal civil war has remained nearly unknown to most of the world. Many NGOs no longer operate in the country. The United States Embassy fled to Ethiopia shortly after the fighting erupted. I arrived in Sudan with the help of a rebel group that controlled parts of the south. Armed men ushered me in over a muddy border road two weeks before without even a stamp in my passport.

Listen to this article, read by Prentice Onayemi

We had now climbed the hilltop to a position the rebels had seized, a stony outcrop where a city of more than 100,000 people spread out across a lush African plain. Through a pair of binoculars, I could make out Kadugli’s residents beginning their day in what was still territory held by the government. Kadugli once served as a staging ground for a slow ethnic slaughter as the Sudanese regime tried to wipe out the rebels in the surrounding mountains. Villagers paid the price instead, as entire settlements were destroyed by barrel bombs. Many families hid in caves. But the dictatorship fell in 2019, and last year, the two generals who seized power in its wake turned against each other. A new civil war began.

Now, in this valley, the tables had turned: As the generals fought each other elsewhere, the rebels were on the offensive.

Kadugli’s food stores had dwindled since the rebels took the main supply route to the city, a wide paved road I could make out through the binoculars. You might have expected the people of this place to have fled by now. But nowhere in Sudan is safe. Khartoum, the capital, has fallen along with other major cities as the generals continue their war. The de facto government has relocated to a port on the Red Sea. Instead, Kadugli seems to be awaiting the arrival of those who sent the fighters on the hilltop: The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, known here by its main initials, S.P.L.M., which has been fighting Sudan’s government on and off since 1983.

A map of Africa showing where Sudan, South Sudan, Khartoum and Kadugli are located.
