The 2024 Domestic Scholarship Round

The University of Western Australia (UWA) node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) invites applications for its PhD program from domestic students (Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, New Zealand citizens and UWA graduates) to start 2025. Before applying, applicants must identify a proposed project here , and contact the project lead to discuss project availability and support.

Applicants should also comply with the UWA’s English language requirements and must provide evidence of english proficiency with their application. Importantly, applicants are only deemed eligible for the award of a UWA-funded scholarship if they have a combined thesis plus coursework WAM average mark of above 75% in an existing qualifying degree. Further information can be found in the UWA’s advice for applicants and research scholarships page .

Applications are invited through the University’s HDR Application Portal. This is a two-stage process, where applicants first apply for the PhD course here , and then apply for an associated scholarship here . Within this applicants will be requested to provide the details of two referees to aid in the selection process.

If you have any questions regarding PhD applications at ICRAR/UWA or the selection process, please contact Dr Luke Davies at [email protected] .

ICRAR UWA has a PhD panel that will rank the applicants and call for interviews, which will be done via online platforms. We committed to equity and diversity, and encourage applications from women and underrepresented minorities.

Tips for Scholarship Applications at the UWA node

  • All scholarships are extremely competitive. Applicants with exceptional academic records (ie: Combined coursework and thesis WAM>80%), research experience and/or training, together with peer reviewed research articles are considered competitive.
  • Please ensure you contact potential supervisors before the deadline to discuss the project . This is essential as supervisors need to provide support to your application before it can be processed.
  • Answer all questions in a well written and formatted style fit for purpose – refrain from copy and paste text from other sources. UWA receives hundreds of scholarship applications, if you want yours to stand out, you need to pay attention to detail, treat it like a job application.
  • Attach all requested documentation and provide evidence to support any stated claim in regard to academic awards/prizes, or work experience by providing certificates or letters from employers.
  • Your thesis and/or published works will be read by your potential academic supervisor and the PhD selection panel, therefore make sure it is readable. If not in English, you may consider providing more than just an abstract in English.
  • Make sure all attachments are legible and in PDF format. Photos of documentation taken by a phone are not always easy to read.
  • Successful scholarship applicants are expected to take up the scholarship, full-time within a few months of the scholarship closing date. If you are unable to meet this time commitment, you should consider applying in the next round. Note: external/distance, off-campus and part-time enrolments are not permitted for scholarship holders.
  • Read UWA’s advice for applicants to ensure you are eligible for a PhD at UWA

  • UWA offered the program I wanted and it is one of the top 100. Also when it comes to cost of living, Perth is most affordable compared to other cities in Australia.

University scholarship for international students based on their bachelors CGPA. It is around 2500 AUD scholarship per semester and for few students it is 5000 AUD.

UWA! Make it worth your effort.

  • UWA is one of the G8 universities in Australia, as well as it is recognized in the world. The location, Perth is very nice place to live as well as it's easier to get work visa and PR. ,
  • But the most important reason of all is that my elder brother was already here before I came so more of a reason to pick Perth. ,
  • The vast array of different facilities they provide from personal care to personal development. You will get food all throughout the campus. They have good medical clinic and pharmacy within the campus. ,
  • A good sports club you can join in to, as well as a well equipped gym. They have libraries that support collaborative activities as well as provide personal space where you can study in peace or simply relax. ,
  • The students come together to form clubs to promote various extra curricular activities ranging from career development and supporting world peace to providing simple and fun environments to make friends. ,
  • Mostly I love the teachers here who are always there for you whether you need help with the study or need advice on growing your career.
  • It gets expensive. For all the facilities they provide they also charge a large amount of money to keep supporting them. Even any food that you will buy would be more expensive than the food you would get anywhere outside UWA.

Overall experience is good enough. I feel industry ready and have confident that I will get hired soon after graduation. I had much fun studying here and still having it. As a person I grew more presentable, more professional.

Yes, I got AUD 10000/- scholarship from the government for the entire course duration.

University of Western Australia - Where my dreams came true

UWA is one of the best universities in Australia as it falls in the group of 8 universities in Australia. Also, UWA is known for its research and is the only uni in western Australia to be on such a high level for my course

yes, I got a scholarship of 10000 dollars per year.

Excelling in Careers at The University of Western Australia

I am enrolled at the University of Western Australia, Perth for a few reasons. Firstly, it is highly ranked (92 globally as per QS Ranking, 2021) and also a part of the prestigious group of 8 universities. Secondly, Perth is a fast-growing city with great potential, learning from this potential will be a great experience. The course structure at UWA covers all aspects of my major and UWA graduates consistently higher than the national average starting salary and state graduate employment rates. The admission process at UWA was also fair and simple. I comfortably meet the admission criteria. Perth also offers a high standard of living. It offers students a 40% discount on all public transport facilities and also enjoys a low crime rate.

I got the "Global Excellence Award" scholarship for my class 12 results. Which amounted to $15,000 each year which makes a total of $45,000.

The UWA life

I attended multiple university fairs and applied to 3 universities. I choose UWA over the other 2 universities because of the course that it was offering. I missed minimum scholarship but a very small margin whereas, I was getting 25% scholarship from other universities, still, I choose this because of its reputation, faculty and ranking. I didn't pay any application fees. I scored 83% in my 10th, 84% in my 12 and 3.2 CGPA out of 4 in my undergraduate degree from NMIMS ( no 1 ranking B school in India). I am very happy with my decision.

UWA In detail

UWA was my first preference, chosen solely because unit choices are super flexible and I could choose electives in languages such as Japanese in addition to my majors. Also chosen because of the variety of units offered in my chosen majors Giving a great perspective of your chosen major.

UWA Science Review

It was the closest for me to travel to from home. It is also the best world recognized university near me where I can choose to work anywhere in the world and have my degree recognized. I also have other friends and past students who go there that recommended it.

University of Western Australia classroom and curriculum

It had the double major I was looking for (pharmacy and neuroscience). It has the highest university ranking in WA and therefore presumed it would be the best. Family and friends have been before and have recommended it to me.

Retake the Comprehensive Examination

Students who do not pass their Comprehensive Exam can attempt it a second time. However, they must register again to take the exam at a later date.

If students do not pass the Comprehensive Examination on the second attempt, they must wait at least one on-campus semester or two online terms before taking the exam a third time. Additionally, they must complete three credit hours of coursework as specified by their academic program advisor in addition to the credit hours normally required for the master’s degree program. The additional coursework may be a repetition of courses the students already completed.

If a student does not pass the Comprehensive Examination on their third attempt or at a later time while enrolled in the degree program, they will be dismissed from the School of Graduate Studies and may not apply for readmission until one on-campus semester or two online terms. Note that students must complete all courses within nine years of their graduation.

Instances of academic dishonesty may be referred to the Academic Integrity Committee (AIC) and are subject to the actions thereof. Students who do not pass the Comprehensive Exam due to academic dishonesty will be dismissed from the School of Graduate Studies for one on-campus semester or two online terms. If a student is dismissed for academic dishonesty on the Comprehensive Exam, the student should adhere to the following procedures for academic appeal.

Submit an Academic Appeal

Students who are dismissed from programs may appeal to the Graduate Appeals Committee for readmission after one on-campus semester or two online terms. Students can begin this process by submitting a written request to the Graduate Dean, who will present the request at a scheduled Committee meeting. When making an appeal, students must provide adequate evidence of their ability, maturity, motivation and accountability. The decision of the Committee is final and not subject to negotiation or further appeal. Any subsequent incidents of academic dishonesty will result in indefinite expulsion from the School of Graduate Studies.
