Keiser University Student Plans to Put Doctorate in Psychology to Good Use

Keiser University graduate Patrick Mendez, Ph.D., is eager to put his new degree to use after recently completing his doctorate in general psychology through Keiser’s online programs.

The California resident heard about Keiser University’s psychology department after doing research about the programs online. He was awed at the results of his search, which showed leading industry professionals working alongside students in the classroom. Keiser University’s Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology degree is a research-based program focused on career advancement in teaching, consulting, administration, or institutional research. The program prepares innovative scholars, researchers, and educators to contribute to the body of knowledge through intensive study in the field of psychology.

“The biggest thing in my decision to come to Keiser was the student-centered experience,” Mendez said. “Students always come first.”

Mendez began his Keiser journey in the industrial organizational psychology doctorate program but switched into the general psychology program after having some friends and fellow veterans take their own lives. Mendez spent four years in the army as an infantry paratrooper, with two deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. He explained that his choice to focus on general psychology came with the hope of creating a better future for fellow veterans.

“I am interested in really helping  understand why suicide is an option at that point, and also being able to research and be an experimental psychologist around how we can prevent that with the future veteran population.”

Thanks to Keiser’s distance education options through the ecampus, Mendez was able to successfully complete his doctorate degree while still working and providing for his family.

Having a Ph.D. under his belt gave Mendez a significant raise in compensation at his current position in a research & development lab in California, where he said he now feels like he fits in among the other leading researchers. In the future, he plans to potentially pivot into teaching psychology as a university or adjunct professor of psychology.

“The way I have taken my Keiser experience is as long as you have ambition and the motivation to take that first step, you will have professors, and researchers, and library staff, and everybody [at Keiser] who is willing to accommodate your situations and provide you with the resources to be successful,” he said.

Mendez has already won two awards for his work in the general psychology Ph.D. program: the APS Student Diversity Registration Award and, most recently, the Psi Chi APS Convention Society Research Award.

About Keiser University

Keiser University originated in 1977 when Dr. Arthur and Evelyn Keiser started the for-profit Keiser School for training Florida’s growing healthcare workforce. Five years later, it became the Keiser Institute of Technology as more STEM programs were launched. Accredited in 1989, Keiser College had built the first two-year Associate of Arts in 1986. By 2001, the Psychology BA started studying fascinating brain structures. After Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum started an investigation of for-profit schools in 2010, Keiser switched to nonprofit status. Linked to the former American Flyers College, KU quickly grew to operate 22 locations, including one in Nicaragua’s San Marcos. In 2016, Keiser University made history by opening South Florida’s first College of Chiropractic. Generating $3 billion yearly, KU now employs 3,800 teaching over 20,000 Seahawks online and on-site with 20 clubs like Sigma Beta Delta. On Niche, Keiser boasts America’s third-best online courses, 35th safest campus, 152nd top private education, and 227th best academics. College Factual also placed KU 324th nationally for psychology programs.

Well, it's expensive and not APA accredited. What are your goals that you think you need to earn a doctorate, and what are your criteria such that you're considering this one?

Have you looked at online DSWs? If you live in a member state of the Southern Regional Education Board, then you might qualify for in-state tuition at University of Tennessee. Doctor of Social Work | The University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Keiser University makes it almost impossible to figure out how much their graduate-level tuition is per credit, which means the cost is outrageous. Stay away! The per-credit-hour charge for part-time undergraduate students at Keiser University at Ft Lauderdale in 2013-2014 was $642 (or over $1900 for one 3-credit undergraduate class). Does anyone know what Keiser University charges for graduate level credits?
I had to use Google to search Keiser's website. They charge by the semester instead of by credit or course. In Fall 2013, their doctoral programs were $10,253 per semester. http://www.keiseruniversity.edu/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/KU-Tuition-and-Fees-Graduate-School.pdf
Wow. Well, nobody hides it when they have a good tuition rate.
any other suggestions guys? I'm not so into the out of country idea and the tenesse dsw has a residency...i have no time to travel
Well, a few months ago you asked about the PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. What about that one?

Based on your goals does the degree need to be regionally accredited or will nationally accredited do as well? California Southern University has a PsyD that is reasonable (20,000 ish) and qualifies for Clinical Psych licensure in California. They are in the RA process (no guarantee).

What about California Coast's Doctor of Education in Educational Psychology. Looks like at 290 per unit it comes in even less expensive than CalSouthern even with a couple of additional levelling classes if needed.
Ed.D. - Doctor of Education in Educational Psychology | Online Degree Programs - California Coast University
That looks interesting. Although educational psychology is a far cry from what I practice...On the other hand it is a doctorate in a similar disciple and edd does not imply psychogist..I will definitely add this to the list..Thanks!
