Bauer’s Ph.D. program in management and leadership gives students the tools for conducting advanced business research, with special expertise in topics such as corporate governance, the energy industry, human resource strategy, technology innovation, and value-based leadership, among many other areas. All graduate students, regardless of the specialty they’ve chosen, take core courses in strategic management, organizational behavior, human resources, and organizational theory. Both micro and macro areas of management are covered, with students challenged to conduct state-of-the-art research and to develop outstanding teaching skills. An open door policy creates a collegial atmosphere where ideas and collaboration thrive. Our faculty and doctoral students co-author in top journals, and our students are actively presenting their -->research and winning awards at national and regional conferences -->. Outstanding teaching skills are honed as doctoral students assume full-time teaching assignments for undergraduate classes. Recent past graduates have found positions with the University of Tennessee, City University of Hong Kong, Pennsylvania State University, Georgia State University, Wright State University, the University of Texas at El Paso, St. Mary's University (San Antonio), and University of Tampa, for example.

Faculty research covers a broad range of Management & Leadership topics including creativity and improvisation, leadership, management teams, strategic decision making, technology innovation, organizational fairness and trust, counter-productive work behavior, stress, work-family issues, and a number of areas in human resources such as compensation, selection and training. Bauer’s Management & Leadership Department also works in close collaboration with the UH doctoral program in industrial/organizational psychology, and doctoral candidates often find courses in other disciplines such as psychology, economics and sociology relevant to their research. Students are encouraged to present papers at prestigious management conferences right from their first year in the program. They also learn about the academic profession through invited guest lectures.

Student Support

Accepted doctoral students are hired as Research Assistants for 20 hours a week for four years and receive competitive year-round stipends . The Department of Management & Leadership provides a laptop or desktop for new students and additional funding for students presenting papers at national conferences.

We strongly encourage applicants to apply as early as possible. The Department will begin reviewing completed applications after December 1st, and submission prior to the deadline will enable us to consider applicants for the entire range of financial support from both the College and the University.

In the field of organizational behavior we research fundamental questions about the behavior of individuals, groups and organizations, from both psychological and sociological perspectives.

A distinguishing feature of Stanford’s PhD Program in organizational behavior is the broad interdisciplinary training it provides. Our students benefit from their interactions with scholars from many disciplines within the Graduate School of Business, as well as from Stanford University’s long-standing strength in the study of psychology, organizations, and economic sociology.  The program is broken down into two broad subareas: Macro Organizational Behavior and Micro Organizational Behavior .

Cross-registration in courses, access to faculty, and participation in colloquia are available in other Stanford departments, such as sociology and psychology . Strong relations with these departments mean that students can build their careers on the foundation of strong disciplinary training in psychology and sociology, respectively.

A small number of students are accepted into the program each year, with a total of about 20 organizational behavior students in residence.

The doctoral program places a heavy emphasis on training students through active engagement in the process of doing research. In addition to formal seminars with invited presenters, our faculty and students exchange research ideas and advice at informal weekly lunches and lab meetings. Students work as research assistants and are expected to conduct independent research early in the program. 

Preparation and Qualifications

All students are required to have, or to obtain during their first year, mathematical skills at the level of one course each of calculus and linear algebra, probability, and mathematical statistics.

Macro Organizational Behavior: Organizational Theory and Economic Sociology

The Macro OB track is dedicated to training students who will be leading researchers in the fields of organizational theory and economic sociology. Our faculty members are among the foremost scholars who bring a sociological approach to the study of organizations and markets , and they are especially active in the fast-developing field of computational social science. They use and teach a variety of research methods such as social network analysis, natural language processing, agent-based modeling, and online group experiments.

Our area has trained students to study a range of topics:

Micro Organizational Behavior

The study of how individuals and groups affect and are affected by organizational context. Drawing primarily on psychological approaches to social science questions, this area includes such topics as:

The Ph.D. in Management

Stern’s Ph.D. program in management prepares students to understand how organizations need to compete in challenging and volatile business environments and how managers must manage in complex and changing workplaces. The training is broad based and interdisciplinary, drawing on the fields of economics, psychology, and sociology. Areas of focus within the management doctoral program at Stern include strategy, the study of the competitive dynamics of firm performance; organizational behavior, the study of the behavior of individual employees and managers within organizations; and organization theory, the study of organizational structures and processes.

Students in our PhD programs are encouraged from day one to think of this experience as their first job in business academia—a training ground for a challenging and rewarding career generating rigorous, relevant research that influences practice.

Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.

How do I know which program is right for me?

There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has five areas of study: Accounting and Management , Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.

The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research

The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

Admission Information Our Online Doctor of Strategic Leadership Degree Program

Admission requirements.

  • A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
  • Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
  • Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

  • Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
  • Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
  • Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
  • Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

Learners in this course evaluate leadership theories and practices in diverse cultures from a historical and theoretical basis using a multi-disciplinary lens. Learners also develop expanded leadership perspectives and practices, enabling them to assure the viability of their organizations in a dynamic global business environment.

Learners in this course focus on analyzing scholarly literature and emerging research trends in relational leadership. The course also emphasizes theories and models of leadership, which support a shift from hierarchical leadership to inclusive and collaborative leadership. Finally, learners assess personal barriers and facilitators to inclusionary leadership and apply theories and models to personal practice.

In this course, learners explore leadership practice in complex and dynamic environments. Learners use systems thinking and organizational theory to analyze leadership practice within the framework of organizational systems and evaluate the role of systems thinking in organizations to develop innovation in complex environments. Finally, learners apply these concepts to leadership practice.

Learners in this course synthesize multiple ways of thinking to support effective leadership decision making. By integrating critical, creative, reflective, systems, and statistical thinking, learners develop leadership qualities that allow them to apply their insights to current models and perspectives in order to envision a future with improved organizational patterns and outcomes.

How to apply

Phd in business management admission requirements.

Applicants must provide the following information for  admission  to Capella programs and specializations:

  • A master’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution
  •  Your official master’s transcripts, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • A valid, government-issued form of photo identification

GRE and GMAT are not required for admission.

International Student Requirements

If you completed your most recent academic coursework, degree, or credential at an institution outside the United States, regardless of your citizenship or where you currently live, you are considered an international applicant.

In addition to the above admission requirements, you will need to submit these materials:

  • Minimum score on acceptable test for proof of English proficiency

Do you wish you could understand why many individuals are resistant to change and what might be ways to engage them successfully? Or why do so many leaders continue to operate from a command and control style?

These are the types of curiosities our students bring to their study. These are the places of wonder that frame discussions, demonstrations of learning, real-world change initiatives, and the dissertation. This PhD program is an opportunity to explore in-depth evidence-based ways to practice and lead change that can make a difference.

At the heart of study is the student’s own practice in professional life. The program enables learners to continuously reflect on and integrate their real-world experience with scholarship and methods of inquiry. The program encourages students to integrate theory and practice in order to enrich their own practice and expand relevant theory. This is not about an ivory tower, but about taking your learning into your workplace and community to help make positive change, improve outcomes, and engage individuals in ways that benefit the common good.

The majority of students in the program are mid to senior-level practitioners. This means that for many, the program journey and achieving their PhD deepens the career paths they are already on. For some, securing a PhD offers the opportunity for new positions, and provides them with the expertise to open consulting practices, teach at the local college or university, or help them become a more public intellectual in their professional networks. Flexible, Innovative, Outcomes-Based, Low-Residency Design

The PhD in Leadership and Change is a post-master’s, full-time program delivered in a unique and distinctive model:

  • Low Residency hybrid delivery means face-to-face meetings 3 times a year
  • Professional Seminar for small and large group discussions and workshops throughout the year
  • Credit for demonstrating learning rather than seat time in a course
  • Learner flexibility within an annual structure, cohort progress through the program, and individual interests
  • Dissertation Phase for conducting original scholarly research
  • Intense faculty and staff support, from the first day to dissertation completion

Residencies

Three face-to-face residencies are held annually for the first three years of the program. The residencies combine cohort-based and program-wide seminars, advising sessions and orientations, guest speakers, peer discussions, and engaging presentations. All other program study is done online both within cohorts and individually. In addition, meeting with faculty at residencies is coupled with many opportunities for one-on-one work throughout the year, virtual workshops on topics of interest, and regular advising.

The residencies are intense gatherings combining graduate seminars, guest lectures, advising sessions, peer discussions, and student presentations. Residencies are held on a rotating basis at some of the Antioch University campuses. Students who remain in pre-candidacy in the 4th year have the opportunity to participate in virtual support residencies until they do advance to candidacy.

Professional Seminar

Participate in online interaction throughout the year For the first three years, the faculty-facilitated Proseminar is the cohort’s “homeroom,” in which students discuss, integrate, and make meaning of their learning for each of the first three years. In small and large groups – students engage in virtual and face-to-face dialogue and develop the skills of group reflection as an emerging community of scholars. Students spend approximately three hours a week involved in Proseminar activity, through discussion forums and web meetings.

Learner Flexibility

Work with faculty to align assignments with your needs and interests. There are a number of ways to think of flexibility in this program. The most obvious is perhaps the ability to live and work anywhere and attend a rigorous and engaging doctoral program. As importantly, however, within the clearly-defined annual requirements, students have the flexibility to submit the assignments in ways that align with the needs of their busy professional lives and personal responsibilities. Each student works clearly with an individual advisor to map their path to most successfully navigate the program’s requirements. Finally, flexibility refers to the ability to individualize one’s study based on one’s own deep interests in leadership and change.

Dissertation Phase

Conduct original, scholarly research A PhD offers the opportunity to conduct original scholarly research, a dissertation. In our program, we want to support research that makes a difference, and that has the potential to inform and affect positive change in organizations and communities and schools, and workplaces.

Over the course of the first three pre-candidacy years, students have the opportunity to engage in the interdisciplinary study of leadership and change as well as to develop competence in research skills. Once they complete the pre-candidacy requirements, they are well prepared to design original research into a topic that matters to them. With a strong supportive Dissertation Committee, students are challenged to conduct a meaningful study that answers their professional curiosities and helps inform ways to lead change and to improve practice. Three Years to Dissertation

  • Reflective Leadership Essay – The student demonstrates the ability to reflect in-depth on the personal meaning (e.g. personal values, personal organizational interests) of his/her past, present and marginalization systems and diverse populations prospective roles as a leader in an organization. This assignment is a demonstration of learning from the Reflective Leader module, which includes residencies, readings, and discussions.
  • Case Studies of Leading Change – The student demonstrates an ability to apply key issues and concepts to the complexities of real-life leadership and change situations. The case study and analysis must be substantial enough to enable the student to apply the literature and explore change situations. This assignment is a demonstration of learning from the Case Study module, which includes residencies, readings, and discussions.
  • Ethics in Leadership and inquiry – The student demonstrates familiarity with and understanding of leadership theories, concepts, and themes and their application to an area of the student’s interest. This assignment is a demonstration of learning from the Ethics module, which includes residencies, readings, and discussions, as well as the completion of the CITIMODULE.
  • Nature of Leadership Essay – The student demonstrates familiarity with and understanding of leadership theories, concepts, and themes and their application to an area of the student’s interest. This assignment is a demonstration of learning from the Nature of Leadership module, which includes residencies, readings, and discussions. Proseminar 1 – A year-long cohort-based Proseminar with on-site and online learning activities. The focus of Proseminar 1 is the core curriculum areas and the development of reflective practice as a learner.
  • Learning plan – Student identifies overarching learning goals, their challenges as a learner, and directions for year 2.
  • Three residencies (2 on-site and 1 virtual)

  • Organizational Change Project – The student designs, leads and evaluates a change initiative based on: an assessment of needs; theoretical and practical considerations in the field of leadership and organizational change; and a commitment to participatory leadership styles and ethical professional practice. This assignment is a demonstration of learning from the Organizational Change module, which includes residencies, readings, and discussions,
  • Critical Review of Research – Students demonstrate an understanding of research designs, including basic, applied, and integrative research; and research paradigms, including both qualitative and quantitative approaches, in the literature of their field. Students are expected to critique the research studies in their own professional fields, including the quality of the research question(s), method(s) of inquiry, appropriateness of the data analysis procedures, and validity of inferences and conclusions drawn. The student is expected to explore the design models and critique their strengths and weaknesses. This assignment is a demonstration of learning from the Research module, which includes residencies, readings, and discussions.
  • Research Redesign – The student demonstrates deep knowledge of at least two research methods by selecting two published peer-reviewed studies in the field, one qualitative and one quantitative, and redesigning them. This assignment is a demonstration of learning from the Research module, which includes residencies, readings, and discussions./li>
  • Proseminar 2
  • – A year-long cohort-based Proseminar with on-site and online learning activities. A significant aspect of this year’s Proseminar is the development of and reflection on leading change.

  • Cultural Dimensions of Leadership – The student demonstrates his/her ability to examine and synthesize ideas and concepts she/he has acquired and to prepare for the next stage of their development within the program and their practice. The specific focus of this essay invites students to reflect on leading change in a world of cultural differences, unequal access to power, and unresolved or unaddressed issues of social justice. This assignment is a demonstration of learning from the Cultural and Global Dimensions of Leadership Module, which includes residencies, readings, and discussions.
  • Individualized Learning Modules – These are two in-depth study opportunities, one in a content area related to the dissertation direction and one in the research method intended to be used in the dissertation.
  • Proseminar 3 – A year-long cohort-based Proseminar with on-site and online learning activities.

Year 4: Dissertation

  • Dissertation Proposal – Students design a study and prepare the Dissertation Proposal, which is the first three chapters of the Dissertation.  The Dissertation Hearing is the culmination of this phase and once approved by the Committee, the student then secures the appropriate Institutional Review Board and proceed with conducting the research phase.
  • Dissertation – Students must complete a Doctoral dissertation demonstrating their ability to conduct original, scholarly research. A dissertation begins with a well-designed question or issue meriting investigation. The issue should emerge from and carry forward an existing body of theory and knowledge. The dissertation should demonstrate scholarship, creativity and originality and have implications for a particular issue in the field of leadership and change in the professions and/or communities. The Dissertation Defense is student’s presentation of the work at a residency or other approved venue.

Our Curriculum is Interdisciplinary

The PhD in Leadership and Change program prepares students to engage in the art and science of leading change from both practice-based and theory-based perspectives.

The broad and deep interdisciplinary curriculum draws from psychology, education, management, social science, and the humanities. We believe this interdisciplinary mix is critical because leading change doesn’t sit in one disciplinary box. Rather, each discipline provides an important lens into the phenomena. For example, psychological studies may help us understand individual resistances to change, whereas critical management studies may help us understand organizational structures and processes that inhibit innovation, and the social sciences may help us understand social-cultural contexts for marginalization and empowerment of community movements.

Over the course of the program, students are exposed to an array of disciplinary perspectives and supported in their efforts to find interdisciplinary opportunities to blend lens in order to best understand the complex challenges of our times.

The Practice of Leadership and Change is Cross-Sector

Just as the study of leadership and change is interdisciplinary, the practice of leadership and change is cross-sector. It would be difficult to imagine any professional leading change within the comfortable confines of their profession: school administrators program need to work with the surrounding neighborhood organizations; business professionals work closely to improve community efforts; healthcare leaders work closely with local nonprofits, and so forth. Our world is complex, and leading change isn’t in a silo, neither discipline nor sector.

That is why we believe so strongly in the power and synergy of our cross-sector learning community. Students deliberate with peers who come from across the world and country, who work in sectors similar and different, and who bring experiences both diverse and similar. It is a powerful opportunity to expand one’s horizon.

The PhD in Leadership and Change program admits 25-30 students in the cross-sector cohort each year, with the academic term beginning July 1. Applications are accepted year-round. Early review of complete applications occurs after October 1st each year. Review of subsequent complete applications begins after February 1st each year and continues through mid-May and/or until the cohort is full.

Requirements

A master’s or other graduate degree issued from an institution recognized by an accrediting body that has been approved by the United States Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and five years of relevant professional experience are minimum eligibility requirements. In addition, selection for admission will depend upon such characteristics as capacity for self-directed learning, evidence of strong academic skills and conceptual abilities, and an interest in interdisciplinary study and applied research. Applicants must demonstrate a strong potential for individual and professional growth, evidence of leadership and aspiration to lead, and an interest in being a socially engaged professional.

  • Present a reflective autobiographical statement that discusses what has led you to want to be a doctoral student in the PhD in Leadership and Change program (include such aspects as your relevant work experience, personal and professional interests, capacity to initiate and self-direct your learning and other appropriate information)
  • Discuss how you believe this PhD program will enable you to become a more effective professional and principled leader in your field.
  • Discuss your overall interest and passion for future in-depth study during the individualized curriculum portion of our program. Please include as much detail as you can regarding the ways in which you hope to focus on this area of interest, including what you are curious about and what you would like to learn.
  • Relate and discuss a personal story that reflects your understanding of leadership and change in your professional field.
  • Letters of recommendation should be from persons who are familiar with your personal, academic, and professional background, who understand your educational goals, and who can address your ability to pursue doctoral study in your chosen field.
  • Request one official transcript from each educational institution you attended. All official transcripts must be received by the PhD program office, directly from the college or university.
  • Please submit a resume that includes: work history (paid and volunteer), education, experience in conducting research, community leadership roles, membership in professional organizations, honors, awards, presentations, and publications.
  • Please submit a sample of your past work that gives some indication of your writing abilities and critical and conceptual thinking skills. Solo authored samples are preferred. That said, if the sample is coauthored, indicate which portion of the work was within your scope of responsibility.
  • A non-refundable fee of $50 in US funds, payable to Antioch University, should accompany the application.

Please note: All materials submitted for application to the PhD program become the property of the PhD program.

Guaranteed fixed tuition is offered in the PhD in Leadership and Change Program for the first three years. Once a student advances to candidacy, the tuition is half of the full tuition, beginning in the trimester following advancement. Additional costs include room and board, transportation, books, course materials, supplies, equipment, and subscriptions. Payment plans are available.

Transfer Credit Information

The program is willing to consider assessing doctoral work completed at another accredited institution within the past five years. The student’s work is evaluated to determine the degree to which it meets the learning goals and criteria established by our program faculty for only two specific first-year assignments: the Case Study in Leading Change and the Nature of Leadership.

The PhD in Leadership Studies Online at University of the Cumberlands is designed to help you guide educational organizations into the future. You’ll learn the skills you need to lead with empathy and insight, inspire staff and students, and contribute insightful research to your field. Online courses and flexible scheduling make it possible to earn your Ph.D. in Leadership. and set your sights on new goals—even while working full time.

With our online PhD in Leadership Studies you will participate in a comprehensive study of effective leadership and administrative methods, while gaining an in-depth look at the political factors involved in organizational decision making. Program planning, assessment strategies, and global trends in leadership round out the online Ph.D. leadership curriculum.

Additionally, if you are a current educator wishing to obtain Kentucky Rank 1 certification, you may complete an approved Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) program through the School of Education and transfer up to thirty (30) hours of the program toward the Ph.D. in Leadership Studies.  Note that a Ph.D. or Ed.D. alone will not lead to the Kentucky Rank 1 certification without first completing an Ed.S. through the School of Education. What Will I Study?

Our journey into the realm of effective organizational leadership begins with an analysis of the biblical, historical, and contemporary leadership model of Steward Leadership. Steward leaders understand how to transform themselves, others and the organizations they lead. This course will provide a framework for leaders to utilize as they lead their organizations with excellence.

This course explores theories informing effective leadership including motivation, decision-making, organizational change, and organizational systems. Further, this course examines the relationship dynamics which occur in organizations between leaders and followers.

This course examines practical principles guiding effective organizational team-building. Principles for building a leadership team, evaluating team performance, avoiding common problems many teams experience, and managing group dynamics, including promoting necessary conflict are discussed.

This course examines the principles of effective board governance. These principles include discussion about the fiduciary, strategic and generative leadership roles of board members. This course will serve as a guide for organizational leaders who work with boards as well as those serving as board members. Specifically, this course will explain in detail what works and why.

This course is designed to introduce students to descriptive and inferential statistics and how these statistics are employed in conducting research studies. Emphasis in this course will be placed upon helping students gain an understanding of the basic principles of statistics and how these principles apply to real life settings.

This course equips students with the research tools required to design the study of a doctoral dissertation. It prepares students to select a topic, review literature, design a study, and collect data, analyze and interpret data, and report and evaluate research.

This course is designed to equip students to analyze and interpret data, report and evaluate research. Simply put, students will learn how to organize data and then interpret that data in order to make sense from the findings via an understanding of what dissertation results actually mean.

In this course, students will create a problem statement. This problem statement will guide their research as they collect data and complete a dissertation. The problem statement will be clear, concise and practical.

In this course, students will build on the work done in LDR 9940 to complete the first draft of the dissertation proposal. Students will work with their advisors to produce their papers.

In this course, the students will revise and edit the proposals to become dissertation documents.

In this course, students will complete and successfully defend doctoral dissertation proposals.

In this course, candidates will initiate, conduct and complete their research. Students will then complete a draft of the final two chapters of their dissertations.

In this course, candidates will complete the writing of their doctoral dissertations.

In this course, candidates will defend and post for public access doctoral dissertations.

This course serves as a guide for leading organizational change from ideation to implementation. A model for strategic planning will be introduced. Practical tools and techniques for leading specific steps in the strategic planning process will be explained, and leaders will be equipped to effectively guide the entire deliberative and collaborative strategic planning process.

This course examines best practices of exemplary leaders when they are functioning at their best. The focus of the course will be on actions and behaviors of effective leaders. The fundamentals of outstanding leadership will be explored in detail. This course will provide a field guide for leaders committed to becoming the best that they can be.

This course explores the importance of institutional advancement for all organizations. Principles of finance will be discussed in detail, and students will gain a practical understanding of the fundamentals of each of the primary reports essential to providing effective fiduciary leadership for organizations.

This degree has content course assignments that can meet a person at their individual organization setting, and each student's dissertation topic is catered to the individual's area of interest and expertise.

The program is designed to be completed in 27 months. In extenuating circumstances, a student may petition for additional time to complete the program of study.

Students should plan around 15-20 hours of study per week. A typical week would be completing an initial content discussion post by Wednesday night. 2 content response posts are due on Saturday night.

Dissertation Requirements

Doctoral students are required to complete a dissertation and defend their research before a committee and University representatives, which may take place at a distance through audio/visual means. No degree shall be awarded without majority of committee approval. Information regarding this capstone doctoral requirement is published in the Dissertation Handbook.

During the course of the program students will gain familiarity with:

  • Basic trends in American higher education enrollment, staffing, degree production, institutional types, financial resources, etc., since World War II;
  • The historical antecedents of contemporary higher education forms and practices;
  • How American forms and practices compare with those of other nations;
  • Current policy issues in American higher education (i.e. the capacity to "list" the ten most critical policy issues and the capacity to describe current debate on those issues);
  • The classics of higher education research and theory in the basic areas of curriculum and instruction, history, organization and governance, faculty and student issues, government policy and finance issues, and comparative higher education (reading list to be distributed);
  • Basic data resources related to higher education, e.g. federal databases, including HEGIS/IPEDS, NCES surveys, etc., major independent data sources, including Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the National Research Council, etc;
  • The non-campus organizational matrix of American higher education, including the increasing number of membership and advocacy organizations representing various constituencies, including, e.g., ACE, AAHE, AGB, AACU, AAU, etc.;

  • What’s your learning style? This is possibly the biggest question when determining whether or not online learning is right for you. If you are disciplined, organized and self-motivated, you can likely succeed in a less structured distance learning environment. If you crave regular interactions with a peer group or professor or prefer the structure of a physical classroom, campus-based learning might be a better choice.

There are two important types of accreditation: institutional and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation is the more important of the two. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) and Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) oversee the agencies that manage the institutional accreditation process. These agencies are each responsible for the schools within a group of states, vetting these schools for the quality of their academics, faculty and finances, among other areas.

You should only enroll at institutionally accredited schools, as this is the only way to qualify for federal financial aid. You can check a prospective school’s accreditation by visiting the accreditation page on its website or checking the directory on CHEA’s website.

Programmatic accreditation provides a similar vetting service in specific fields and disciplines. Its importance varies by field; however, programmatic accreditation is relatively important in business and management.

With master’s in management programs, keep an eye out for accreditation from three organizations: the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the International Accreditation Council for Business Education, or the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

Consider Your Future Goals

An online master’s in management program is generally a good option for an early career business professional who aspires to managerial and supervisory roles in their field. Some people claim that a master’s in management is a more practical degree than an M.B.A. , focused more on minutiae and data such as budgeting and forecasting.

As such, many schools build their programs with working business professionals in mind. To that end, many online master’s in management programs do not include field experience or practicum experiences or internships. If you want your program to include this opportunity, you’ll have to research more carefully on the front end.

Since management is a general field, some online programs in the field offer more specific concentrations in areas such as nonprofit management, human resource management or supply chain management. Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Per-credit tuition rates for the 10 ranked programs in our guide ranged from $347 to $775. Over the course of a typical 30- to 36-credit master’s in management program, these rates translate to approximately $10,000 to $28,000 in total tuition.

As of the 2021–2022 academic year, the National Center for Education Statistics found that the average college charged $20,513 in annual tuition. For a one- or two-year master’s program, this translates to roughly $20,000 to $40,000 in total tuition.

Make sure to fill out the FAFSA to finance your master’s program. The FAFSA can lead to loans, scholarships and grants. You can pursue similar opportunities through nonprofit organizations and schools. You can also seek out graduate assistantships through your school, but these opportunities are often reserved for on-campus students.

The McCall MacBain Scholarship offered to graduate students provides recipients with mentorship, interdisciplinary learning, and a global community to maximize their impact on the world. Scholars are selected for their exceptional character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic excellence, and intellectual curiosity. In 2023, two scholarship recipients chose to pursue their studies at McGill Desautels in the Master of Management in Analytics (MMA) program.

Tomy Pelletier graduated from HEC Montréal in 2023 with a specialization in business intelligence. An outdoor enthusiast passionate about process improvement and management, he was honoured as a TD Community Leadership Scholar in 2020. Tomy shares his experience joining the MMA program in 2023 through the McCall MacBain Scholarship.

What made you choose the MMA?

I chose the MMA as I was driven by a curiosity for innovative methods to track, automate, and generate information. I was particularly interested in new approaches to understanding and presenting data. I believe that numbers convey ideas more effectively and provide richer context than traditional financial methods when assessing team, program, or business performance. My commitment to continuous improvement made this field and McGill Desautels’ MMA program an ideal fit for me.

How has being a McCall MacBain Scholar impacted your experience at McGill so far?

The experience has been great. The McCall MacBain scholarship is more than a full-ride; it’s access to a network that enabled me to make the most out of this intensive year. Through the scholarship, I found a mentor and a coach to help me discuss the next steps in my career and foster my personal and professional growth. Even walking out of this program, I have strong bonds with other scholars studying law, engineering, and health, and hope to lead new initiatives with them in the future. I will also keep in touch with other members of this community, as they are an incredible reference group and an incomparable think tank for my future endeavors.

What aspects of the MMA program have you found most rewarding?

The program's intensity has taught me invaluable lessons in perseverance. By balancing vigorous weeks with deliberate breaks and intentional disconnection, I've discovered how to maintain a steady pace. Engaging in outdoor activities and personal interests, as well as McGill's diverse extracurricular offerings, has been crucial. It helps you reflect on the balance you need and allows you to test it. This experience is a meaningful lesson in the kind of workplace you aspire to and offers insight into staying productive and recharged, making the journey enjoyable.

Can you share a memorable project or experience from the program?

One memorable project was my capstone in the pharmaceutical industry, where I developed an algorithm to capture off-label indications for specialized drugs. This multi-layered model made predictions from unstructured data based on context. A key part of the deliverable was presenting this complex project in an understandable way for both technical and non-technical audiences, using comprehensive visualizations and dynamic reports.

Another standout project was the crop rotation optimization in our optimization class. We conducted extensive research to understand soil fertility and the science behind it while considering the economic realities of farmers in Manitoba. This project felt very complete, as we integrated various perspectives to deliver a well-rounded solution.

A third memorable project involved working with two colleagues to create SkinClaire, a chatbot to assist clients in choosing products based on their preferences, previous purchases, and skin conditions. It was my first time coding a chatbot, making it a significant learning experience and a great introduction to the program.

What’s next for you, following the program?

I'm currently in the interviewing process and eager to leverage my skills to drive impact in healthcare or the energy sector. My goal is to focus on process improvement and influence decision-making to create meaningful change. I also aim to utilize my presentation skills to effectively communicate complex ideas and implement innovative solutions. These fields present unique challenges and opportunities, and I am eager to apply what I've learned from the MMA program. I look forward to contributing to projects that prioritize sustainability, efficiency, and improved outcomes for communities and organizations.

What advice would you give the incoming cohort of the MMA program?

This program is rewarding and requires focus. You'll work on numerous projects with different teams, and the people around you will become your closest companions. Take the time to get to know them and nurture these relationships. I had a much more enjoyable experience once I developed friendships. Organize as a group around a class and conquer as a team. Everyone comes in with different experiences and will leave with unique skill sets. Be intentional about your goals and remember; it's not just about being at the top of the class.

Engage with other Master's programs at McGill Desautels (MMF, MBA, MMR), through electives or social events.

Lastly, learn to communicate and simplify complex concepts. Our work is intricate, and understanding only part of it is common. To be a valuable addition to clients and teams in the business, developing strong communication and presentation skills is crucial. You'll have multiple opportunities to present throughout the program; leverage them fully. This often-overlooked skill can make the difference between a good and a great project.

Master of Management in Analytics (MMA) Program

The McGill Master of Management in Analytics (MMA) degree is a specialized program in the evolving field of analytics and data science with a strong emphasis on applied and experiential learning through our 3 Pillars: Quantitative Methods, Technology Automation and Business Application. INDUSTRY LEADERS ENDORSE HPU'S ACCREDITED MASTER'S IN CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT DEGREE PROGRAM

HPU's new one-year, in-person Master of Science in Construction Management program has received strong industry support from Hawaiʻi industry leaders, and in June 2024 the program received full accreditation from WSCUC. This is the first and only Master of Science in Construction Management program of its kind in Hawaiʻi. Interest has surged into the hundreds, and enrolled students are eagerly anticipating the start date of August 2024.

The construction industry in Hawaiʻi has seen a significant boom, with approximately 7% growth in construction jobs from the first quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2024 ( dbedt.hawaii.gov ). Nationally, construction managers represent 5-10% of the industry, translating to roughly 182 new construction manager jobs added in Hawaiʻi alone last year ( bls.gov ). Looking ahead, the job outlook for construction managers is promising, with a projected 5% growth from 2022 to 2032—nearly double the average growth rate for all other occupations ( bls.gov ).

“As a professional engineer and certified project management professional with experience within the construction industry, I’m happy to see our Master of Science in Construction Management program addressing the evolving needs of Hawaiʻi's construction industry,” said HPU Construction Management Program Director and Assistant Professor Charles Chen, Ph.D. “This curriculum integrates advanced technical knowledge with practical skills, preparing students for leadership roles both locally and globally. By blending industry best practices with the collaborative spirit of our islands, we're equipping the next generation of construction managers to tackle complex challenges and drive innovation in our field.”

The General Contractors Association of Hawaiʻi Construction Management Program offers the master’s degree in construction management at HPU. The program trains graduates with the skills needed to advance within this highly lucrative industry. Skills gained in the graduate program can lead to construction roles in various sectors, from residential to commercial. Students benefit from industry expertise and a curriculum aligned with the American Council for Construction Education's accreditation standards.

The impact of the program extends beyond education; it also offers tangible benefits in the job market. 

According to industry data, holding a master’s degree can lead to a 10-25% salary increase compared to peers with only an undergraduate degree. For construction managers in Hawaiʻi, this could translate to an annual salary boost from the median $140,000 to as much as $176,000 with a master’s degree ( salary.com , salary.com ).

With roles such as senior project manager, director of construction, and consultancy positions often offering higher pay scales and entry-level management opportunities, the value of advanced education is clear.

The HPU program offers a unique and comprehensive curriculum through ten in-person courses, including nine core classes and a final capstone project. Students dive into advanced topics such as construction project management, cost estimating, construction law, sustainable practices, and innovative technologies. They can choose between concentrations in business administration or advanced project management.

Graduates gain specialized skills in managing construction projects from planning to execution, including advanced techniques in scheduling, cost estimation, risk management, and resource allocation. They also develop proficiency in interpreting construction documents, understanding legal and ethical aspects, and applying sustainable practices. The program fosters critical thinking, effective communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities, with practical experience available through a supervised internship for those in the advanced project management concentration. 

“Given my experience in the construction industry, I’m very excited about the launch of Hawaiʻi Pacific University's Master of Science in Construction Management program. This initiative will provide critical training to future leaders in our field, equipping them with advanced skills and practical experience,” said HPU Board of Trustees Chair Lance Wilhelm. “By addressing the evolving needs of Hawaiʻi's construction sector, the program promises to enhance the quality of projects across the state and contribute to the broader community. It represents a significant step forward in ensuring that our local industry remains at the forefront of innovation and excellence.”

Objective Achieving gender equity in academic medicine is not only a matter of social justice but also necessary in promoting an innovative and productive academic community. The purpose of this study was to assess gender distribution in dual MD/PhD academic programme faculty members across North America.

Methods Academic metrics were analysed to quantify the relative career success of academic faculty members in MD/PhD programmes. Measured parameters included academic and leadership ranks along with nominal research factors such as peer-reviewed research publications, H-index, citation number and years of active research.

Results Χ² analysis revealed a statistically significant (p<0.0001, χ²=114.5) difference in the gender distribution of faculty and leadership across North American MD/PhD programmes. Men held 74.2% of full professor positions, 64% of associate professor positions, 59.4% of assistant professor positions and 62.8% of lecturer positions. Moreover, men occupied a larger share of faculty leadership roles with a statistically significant disparity across all ranks (p<0.001, χ²=20.4). A higher proportion of men held positions as department chairs (79.6%), vice chairs (69.1%) and programme leads (69.4%).

Conclusion Gender disparity was prevalent in the MD/PhD programmes throughout North America with women achieving a lower degree of professional stature than men. Ultimately, steps must be taken to support women faculty to afford them better opportunities for academic and professional advancement.
