Cute Desk Decorating Ideas for an Aesthetic Homework Space

This post may contain affiliate links · This blog generates income via ads

As the kids head back to school, it’s time to start thinking about how to create an inspiring homework and study space for the coming year. You don’t have to break the bank to create a beautiful workspace; you simply need a few easy ideas to make an aesthetic desk area. In today’s blog post, I’m sharing some of the cutest and easiest ways to decorate a desk space for back-to-school season and beyond. (P.S: You can also use these ideas for your own work-at-home desk area or your office spaces!)

homework decoration

I recently gave my daughter’s room a teen room makeover with a loft bed; you can check out the full makeover right here. Let’s dive in to how we setup and organized her desk area, and how you too can create an organized, personalized workspace for your child… or for yourself!

(The video below was sponsored by Cricut Canada)

Personalize It

To make you child’s desk area feel personal and match their style, consider adding some themed art or decals to the wall area. Come up with a fun theme that matches their personality, and purchase or create artwork to match. Consider painting the wall behind the desk in a pop of color that goes with the theme. Installing some removable wallpaper is also a fun update. Look for cute desk accessories like a mouse pad, small rug, desk lamp and office chair that further complement the mood and match the color palette.

For Little A’s new desk under her loft bed, I created a crystal & moon themed decal with my Cricut Maker and applied that to the wall. She loves collecting crystals, and this was the perfect, personal touch!

Use Multi-Functional Storage

Staying organized is a crucial element of maintaining a beautiful workspace. Try to minimize clutter and opt for multi-functional storage solutions. You can find functional desktop organizers and decorate them to fit your child’s aesthetic. With multi-functional storage, you can have everything you need within reach.

I found this handy desk organizer with drawers here on Amazon, and then I used my Cricut to cut out some labels and a crystal-themed design. I applied the labels to the drawers to help my daughter stay organized. The cute crystal design added to the top of the organizer matches her theme. Inside the organizer, she has lots of room for her favourite pens, pencils, markers, Post-It Notes, clips and more.

If you don’t have lots of desk drawers, you may want to consider multiple desk organizers for larger items like stationery and folders.

Keep Cords in Check

Messy power cords and cables everywhere is a common problem that can ruin the aesthetic of a desk. To keep cords at bay, consider using cord organizers or clips like these ones .. For cords that aren’t in use, wrap them neatly and secure them with a cord storage strap.

homework decoration

For my daughter’s homework desk, I made some DIY cord wraps with faux leather and velcro with my Cricut Maker. Then, I labeled some clear pencil cases to store the neatly wrapped cords and chargers all in one place.

Hang Some Inspiration

Whether it’s photos of your family or images that inspire your child, hanging items on the wall near their desk can add a personal touch to their workspace. From motivational quotes to photos of loved ones or even their creative work, framing them by the desk can create a wall decor that is both inspiring and functional.

If you don’t want to use a frame, you can purchase an inexpensive wall grid like this one . Then, art, photos, or even calendars can be easily hung with paper clips. You could also install pegboard for a similar function and look. Click here to see how I used a pegboard wall in my own home office!

homework decoration

Add Some Greenery

Plants are the perfect way to add a touch of nature and life to your desk. And if you’re not a fan of real plants, opt for artificial ones that look just as lovely and require no maintenance – perfect for kids! Placing a small succulent or a mini cactus on a desk can do wonders for brightening up a workspace. You can also hang a small pot on the wall next to your desk, or place a couple of small plants on a wall shelf. Not only do plants add to the aesthetic of a workspace, but they also have been proven to boost productivity and decrease stress levels.

homework decoration

Layer Your Desk Decor

Lastly, to create depth and visual interest on your desk, layer your decor. If your desk is too plain, it might look too sterile and uninviting (especially if it’s a white desk like my daughter’s). You can stack a few books or use a fun lamp to create height. Use a combination of vertical and horizontal arrangements for interest. Make sure you have enough space to work, but you can still create a charming aesthetic through subtle layering and texture.

Don’t forget to use the walls around the desk as part of your layering and height. Hang hooks on the wall for practical storage, or add some wall shelves for books and art. In my daughter’s modern desk area, I hung a small shelf on the wall for accessories and a hook for her headphones.

More cute desk decor ideas

  • use a wooden laptop stand to elevate a laptop or computer montior and add some cozy texture
  • create an acrylic wall calendar like I did here for your wall, or buy one from Etsy
  • use one of your favourite fabrics to create an upcycled wall storage pocket like I did here

So there you have it – my favourite aesthetic desk decor tips! These simple and affordable ideas will transform your child’s workspace (or your own) into a vibrant and engaging desk area. Happy decorating!

You'll Be Excited to Hit The Books in These Chic Studies

Whether you're cramming for an exam or overseeing an entire staff.

Designing the ideal study can be like finding your perfect pair of blue jeans: elusive and sometimes a downright fantasy. Whether you're a student looking for a focused homework zone or a work from home warrior who just needs some peace and quiet, the quintessential study space needs to wear a lot of hats. It needs to be chill but invigorating; tranquil but inspiring; functional but beautiful—that's a lot for a little room to live up to, right? Luckily, the design world is full of inspiration, and we're rounding up the best of the best, focusing on happy homework zones, study rooms, and home offices that will have you begging for just one more meeting or one last test. Well, maybe.

Get a Little Moody

moody blue study room

Equal parts relaxing and dramatic, this daring study space by GRT Architects boasts everything you'd need to get down to brass tacks, from bookshelves and versatile side tables to a cozy spot to perch. For a similarly moody hue in your own space, try River Blue by Benjamin Moore.

Go Bold and Brazen

study room, office, colorful office

If you're someone that thrives on vibrant energy, you're probably not going to be able to easily find your groove in a stark neutral space. Play into your work or study personality with decor that keys into exactly what it is that makes you tick. Here, designer Krsnaa Mehta relied on righteous jewel tones and custom art to enliven his personal study.

Make Room for Storage

Designer Eric Olsen carved out a dedicated area for his kids to focus on schoolwork. The study zone features custom pendants for ample lighting over a desk that seats multiple children to gather around for group projects or tutoring sessions. Built-in storage with cabinet enclosures ensures that books, school supplies, and other essentials are organized behind closed doors.

Carve Out a Comfort Nook

If you're one of those people who can't focus unless you're in your most comfortable sweats with a cup of coffee in hand, may we present: your dream space. Designer Jeffrey Alan Marks leaned into all things cozy when dreaming up this hideaway reading nook in his California beach home . With an emphasis on just the right amount of light, free space, and shelving—plus one insanely-comfortable daybed—it's the perfect spot to carve out time to brush up on your history lessons or just complete the day's Wordle.

Put Every Inch to Use

homework decoration

When space is at a premium—and a quiet spot to conduct business is the end goal—it's time to put every unused corner to use. Designer Corey Damen Jenkins proved just how versatile a few extra square feet could be in this Michigan home, where he transformed a lofted space above the foyer into a focus zone worthy of a CEO or 4.0 brainiac. All it took? A versatile shelving unit, comfy chair and bistro table from West Elm.

Find the Light

Even the most diligent among us are not immune to the need for a little study break every now and then. Give your mind somewhere beautiful to wander by posting up your study zone in front of a scenic window. In this home office designed by Heather Chadduck , an eclectic gallery wall frames a brightly-lit window, encased in trim painted Green Blue by Farrow & Ball .

writing retreat by installing a shelving unit on the wall in an unused corner of his apartment, tariq dixon, cofounder of the furniture brand trnk, turned a tiny space into a writer’s oasis

At the end of the day, having a dedicated space to study or work is far more important than how fancy—or big—said space happens to be. Need convincing that big things can happen in small spaces? Take this cute corner as proof positive. Designer Tariq Dixon transformed a tiny unused corner of his apartment into an inspiring place to write answer e-mails, and gather inspiration.

Sink Into Comfort

In the Sacramento home of designer Shavonda Gardner , a welcoming vintage Eames chair is all it takes to beckon passersby to stop and study (or read, or scroll) for a while. To make the rest of the space stand up to the stately vintage lounger, Gardner relied on an inky paint hue ( Caviar by Sherwin-Williams ) and personalized accessories.

Get Bookish in the Bedroom

home interior design by katie hodges design

For tweens and teens, there's no better spot for a study zone than in their bedroom—let's be honest, they only want to be in there anyway. Designer Katie Hodges hooked her grade-school client up with a study space that will carry her all through the way through high school (and beyond!), thanks to a custom built-in station with room for books, mementos, and more.

Keep It Consistent

montana cabin interior designed by kylee shintaffer

In this Montana family cabin designed by Kylee Sshintaffer roomy benches and plenty of task lighting make this bonus room the perfect place to buckle down and study. The tight color scheme ensures that it fits right in with the rest of the home.

Do Double Duty

When designer Byron Risdon was tasked with carving out a WFH space in a petite Washington, D.C. apartment , he turned to an unlikely spot: the dining room table. By installing floating shelves and opting for an expansive dining table, Risdon gave his teacher client a place where he could hold class—and share a glass with friends afterward.

Clear the Way for Collaboration

study room inspiration office inspiration

You know what they say—two heads (or three, or four) are better than one. If you prefer collaboration over quiet (or just need a place to work on that pesky group project), consider doctoring up a study space that will allow you to work as a team. In this office space from House Beautiful's 2019 Whole Home, designer Dani Arps opted for an oversized work that could fit several thinkers at once.

15 Homework Organization and Art Display Ideas

School may be different this year, and if we’re not ready or organized, things can quickly become chaotic. Papers, homework, and artwork everywhere!    Luckily, we’ve put together some clever homework organization ideas as well as a cute homework station and ways to display your kids’ artwork.

Homework organization ideas and cool ways to display your kids' artwork

1). If you have space, a designated homework station is a lifesaver. You don’t have to worry about papers and school supplies getting scattered all throughout the house because everything is right where you and your kids need it.

2). Keep a homework box handy with the supplies your child needs to complete homework without distractions.

4). I love this backpack and homework center . No backpacks littering the floor, and each child has cubbies for shoes or books.  Paperwork can go in baskets up top, too!

A bunch of items that are on display

5 ). Use a curtain wire to hang your children’s art and craft projects. Check out the vertical and horizontal pockets on her walls, too, for managing incoming papers and homework!

9).   You don’t have to get fancy with homework organization. One practical tip is to use magnetic clips for each child to keep their homework on the fridge . Simple, but effective.

  • Print it out.
  • Hang it up with a clip.
  • Take it off to work on it.
  • Complete it. Submit it.

10).  If you homeschool (or if your kids just need extra practice) individual work binders can be a huge help. Brilliant!

Parent Organization (for checking homework):

1). What’s missing from many homework stations? A parent basket! What a great way to keep up with papers that you have to hang on to for a while.

2). You’re a busy mom, so you may not have time to process those papers right away. An organizing basket works well!  Have a 2 or 3 spot hanging file: 1). “Please check”    2). “Working on it”   3). “Done” hanging caddy may be just what you need.

3). Individual cork boards are a smart idea, too.  Process the papers right away when the kids get home from school, and homework, spelling words, etc. are pinned to the child’s corkboard.

4). My favorite one is more of a keepsake idea.  Every year you’ll have a handful of things that you want to save for each child. Start a file storage system now with a folder for each grade .

Thanks for letting me know!! 🙂

What great organizational ideas. I love the printable homework sheet. That should help my son stay more organized. I am pinning it now. Thanks!

30+ Homework Station Ideas for Kids and Teens

Ready to make your family’s after-school or home school routine a bit less stressful? An organized homework station is the answer! I’ve included easy tips for small spaces and multiple kids so everyone can have a quiet, supervised space to study.

Collage of multiple homework station ideas for kids.

Table of Contents

It’s back to school time again and along with that comes a flood of emotion. While its sad to see our babies growing up, my inner organizing dork gets a boost of excitement. Create a cheerful space with these homework station ideas to inspire learning, even if you’re short on space!

A homework station is an inviting area that is dedicated to learning, homework, and informal learning like arts and crafts project. Although the kitchen table will suffice for a quick review or a worksheet, we’ve found it’s nice to have a homework zone where school supplies, books, and school calendars can have a dedicated place of their own. This cuts back on clutter and distractions.

I was inspired to write this post because of what I’ve learned from our frustrations with my son’s severe ADHD. At first, homework hour was a stressful experience full of tears (mine), yelling and every possible distraction under the sun. No exaggeration – 20 minutes of homework regularly took almost 2 hours. The material was never the issue. Home school moms, you have my admiration!

That’s where a dedicated space and equitable ground rules saved the day (and my sanity!)

How To Setup a Homework Station

I’ve learned a lot over several incarnations of our homework space. Creating a basic homework station area is simple and effective with these tips below:

  • Choose a quiet area. The biggest chance of success is to limit distractions. Preferably with a handy outlet for a laptop, or charging accessories like headphones. For my son, I find that headphones with music (on loop) works wonders.
  • Stock it with necessities. My son is the king of wasting time looking for misplaced items. Before official homework time, I ask if he has everything he needs to minimize the chances of him getting up from the desk.
  • Set a routine. Same time + Same space = Success. I personally give my son a short break after school before we get down to business.
  • Keep ’em close. While we must balance distractions, young children especially need supervision and usually help.
  • Minimize your own distractions. When my son was in elementary school, I couldn’t continue working from home during homework time. It wasn’t fair to ask him to stay focused, when I myself wasn’t focused on his questions. So I placed a tiny desk in our kitchen. That way I had both eyes on him while I washed dishes or prepped dinner. I was available, yet still productive.

Homework Station Supplies

Below is a handy list of supplies that are sometimes useful.

  • Pens and pencils
  • Loose leaf paper for scratch paper or notes
  • A timer or clock
  • A folder with pockets
  • 1 box of color pencils or crayons
  • Computer and charger
  • A planner (checklists are the lifeblood of this house!)
  • Craft supplies as necessary – glue sticks and scissors are examples
  • A comfy chair

Homework Station Setup Ideas

Finding the right space is often the most challenging part! I’ve included some inspirational ideas below to get focused. You don’t need to have an elaborate space, but these are great jumping off points to inspire your creativity.

Nooks & Crannies

White desk area in an alcove.

While most of us don’t have room for a dedicated office, there’s usually space to spare like under the staircase, an unused closet, or an awkward alcove . These centrally located spaces are often quiet and can be quite magical.

The unused space underneath a staircase like this desk is also perfect for using as a small homework station. This design utilizes fun lines and strokes to make it visually interesting.

Homework Stations that Foster Creativity

I honestly believe that adding a little creativity to the space fosters the desire to learn and leads to great ideas. Classrooms are full of stimulating decorations for a reason.

Here’s a few creative concepts to enhance your learning environment:

A simple wall Children’s art display like the desk above allows kids to hang their accomplishments and past artwork.

Colorful kids room with desk area for homework and built in shelves.

Add a splash of color or maybe some wall flash cards.

While these beautiful spaces are awesome, sometimes we just need a simple option like this portable homework station .

More portable homework station ideas :

  • Use a bath caddy to hold supplies so you can grab and go.
  • A tiny desk and rolling cart makes it easy to move supplies where you need them, when you need them.
  • I love my car seat organizer for homework on-the-go. It’s a lifesaver when I have to run errands.
  • This fold away desk vault in a box is brilliant!

Room for Two (or more)

If you have more than one child, figure out how they learn best. Do they prefer to  study  together? Try setting up the desk so it can accommodate everyone. A collaborative study area is less isolating.

I’m a big fan of this option . Everyone has dedicated space and no one is encroaching on the other’s turf.

This desk utilizes a stacking bookshelf to create two separate work areas and provide ample storage for each user. To save space, you could also have the desks face each other with the bookshelf between them.

PRO TIP: Peg Boards are excellent additions to any Homework Station. They allow you to customize your storage and wall display without limits. Here’s how we built a DIY pegboard organizer.

13 Fun Homework Ideas: The Best Ways To Make Homework Fun For Kids Quickly & Easily

Sophie Bartlett

Figuring out how to make homework fun can be a tricky task for parents.

Does it feel like you’re constantly nagging your kids to do their homework? If your answer is yes, know that we’ve all been there! It’s natural for parents to want their children to progress and do well in school, but after an entire day of paper, pencils, and books many youngsters will resist getting on with their homework – and that’s putting it mildly!

Fun Math Games and Activities Packs for Kindergarten to 5th Grade

Fun Math Games and Activities Packs for Kindergarten to 5th Grade

Individual packs for Kindergarten to Grade 5 containing fun math games and activities.

Top Tips To Make Homework Fun:

1. work together, 2. use rewards and incentives, 3. make them a snack, 4. make it visual, 5. try different learning apps, 6. set up a homework play date, 7. go outside, 8. turn it into a game, 9. let them play teacher, 10. use a timer, 11. create a special homework space, 12. remember to be positive, 13. get help if you need it.

Thankfully, there are ways of making homework less boring and that are a little bit more fun for your child. Whether they need to practice spelling, learn their times tables or revise for an important exam, our top fun homework ideas will help you magically take the ‘work’ out of homework.

Fun Homework Ideas - work together

Adults often work best in the company of others, and the same can be said of kids, so why not sit with your child while they’re studying and get on with some of your own work or life admin?

Whether you’re returning emails or doing your online banking, creating a shared workspace and modeling focused work is a great way to spend quality time together while they complete their homework. Win-win!

Quick win : While your child is tackling their fractions homework, you could sit down with them and take a look through your finances.

Rewards and incentives are great when it comes to getting your children to follow your household rules and routines, and homework is no different. Things like stickers or the promise of time on their iPad or games console for slightly older children can all work wonders in getting them to do their homework without a battle.

Quick win: For every few questions they answer they could get a minute of screen time!

Fun Homework Ideas - make them a snack

Let’s face it: A hungry child is an unfocused, unmotivated and unhappy child.

Most children come out of school ravenous, so let them nibble on a nutritious after-school snack while they get on with homework; things like popcorn, apple slices, grapes, or crackers and cheese are all great snack options.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, Active for Life has a list of healthy after-school snack ideas and recipes to try.

Quick win: One of the best brain foods for kids is a nice and crispy apple! So when your child is craving something sweet just cut up an apple and let them munch away.

Help to eliminate the late night ‘Oh, I forgot to do that’, and create a weekly homework chart so your child can see what they have to do each day and check off each ‘to do’ task as it’s been completed.

Again, Pinterest has some great free printables to help keep kids organized. Get them involved by letting them color it, or decorate it with their favorite stickers, and pin it up somewhere at their height, where they will see it easily every day as a reminder. Some exciting new stationery and colorful pens might help too.

Quick win: An easy way to make homework fun is to grab a piece of paper and get your child to draw out and decorate a ‘homework chart’ consisting of 5 days. Stick it on the fridge and add a sticker to each day after they’ve done their homework, when they’ve collected 5 stickers they get a treat!

Fun Homework Ideas - try different learning apps

If your child prefers to be online, there are some great online apps around that children will have fun using, yet encourage learning too. Here are our favorite free math websites for example. Speak to your child’s teacher too and see which apps the children use in school so you can support what they’re doing at home.

Quick win: One of our favorite websites that makes homework fun is Tang Math !

Holding a homework playdate where your child can invite one of their best school buddies over to do homework together can be a great way for them to learn and make sure the work gets done, especially older children in elementary school.

Plus, it’s likely that their parents will be delighted!

Younger children may need a bit more support and guidance but can still gain a lot from the experience of learning together with a friend – think of this as a mini-educational play date for them.

Quick win: Let your child and their friend play for a while, and then get them to work through their homework with the incentive of a yummy ‘ice cream party’ when they’ve completed all of their homework.

Fun Homework Ideas - go outside

If the weather allows, create a comfortable outside study space and allow your child to do their homework outdoors.

The fresh air can help kids with their concentration if they’ve been stuck in a classroom all day, and studies also show that being outside, closer to nature, can increase productivity. The reward of a quick game of Frisbee or a kick-around of a soccer ball between tasks will help them stay motivated too.

Who said home learning had to be boring? If children enjoy what they’re learning, they’re more likely to remember what they’re being taught, so turn their learning into a fun game. Using sweets like Smarties to help with math and number work can turn the experience from a chore into a treat. If they get the right answer, they get to eat some!

Another trick that you can use when your child is learning spellings is to write them in shaving cream or in magnetic letters. It sounds simple but we can guarantee that it will make homework a lot more fun for your child.

These math games for kids and times tables games are a great place to start.

Quick win: If you’re looking for some fun homework ideas then check out this simple multiplication activity you can do at home, it’ll even get in one of your child’s five a day!

Make another fun homework game by creating your own mini-classroom and letting your child step into the role of teacher.

Have your child explain a concept to you as a teacher, as you, or their sibling, play the role of the student. This game works particularly well with subjects that require theory, like Science for example, as it will improve their understanding of the concept and build logic and reasoning skills.

Quick win: Make homework fun by getting your child to choose their favorite teddies and toys and setting them up in their own mini- classroom. Start off with registration, ‘mom’ ‘present’, ‘mr teddy’ ‘here’ etc. You’ll soon notice that your child is growing in confidence regardless of the topic as children love playing teacher!

Fun Homework Ideas - let them play

Some children may have difficulty working for prolonged periods of time without a break, so using a timer can be great for getting them to complete homework without whining. For example, if your child is given 20 math problems for homework, you can say “Complete the first 10 questions, then we’ll take a 5-minute break, then complete the next 10 questions”.

Many children will need a mental break and will work more effectively when given the opportunity to take one. At the end of the task, they get to pick an activity of their choice. If your child gets easily distracted, a timer game can work well to keep them focused on the task in hand.

Quick win: Put the timer on your phone so that your child can see the countdown while they’re working.

A special study space can make homework more fun and help motivate your child to get it done! Choose a space in your house that’s least likely to distract your child, and create simple, organized, and kid-friendly homework.

16 Stylish Homework Nooks the Whole Family Can Enjoy

homework decoration

Kate Marker Interiors

Homework nooks are spaces for anyone to feel comfortable and focused, so they can complete their work effortlessly without distractions. But if you don't have a designated room for it, it can be challenging. Here are 16 homework nook ideas to help you design an intentional space for anyone in your family.

Set a Serene Ambiance

Ashley Montgomery Design

Set an ambiance where you feel calm and collected when doing your work. You can often feel overwhelmed if you have a lot to do or you have a deadline to meet, so counter those feelings by being in a serene space. It'll help you slow down and focus on getting everything done accordingly.

Divide Study Nooks

Michelle Boudreau Design

With any family, there is bound to be an overlap of work so it's crucial for there to be enough space so everyone can complete their assignments worry-free. A simple wall divider guarantees privacy, so whoever is working can completely concentrate on their work without any distractions from their neighbor.

Bring in Plants

Black and Blooms

Liven up your homework nook with some greenery , whether it's real plants or fake ones. They will uplift your mood and give you an excuse to take a break to water them. Plants can also transform your dull space into a bright one, so have fun picking out plants that you love.

Stick to a Theme

Studio Peake

When creating your homework nook, consider picking a theme and using it as a guide to decorate the space. Whether you choose a specific color or style, a cohesive theme allows everything to look and feel orderly.

Make the Most of Every Corner

Any space can be used to create a small and comfortable homework nook to sit down and do some work, especially unused corners. This unused space is transformed into a useful area to do last-minute assignments or write a shopping list before leaving the house.

Work With a View

Bespoke Only

Working long hours indoors may feel a bit isolating if you don't have the time to go outside to enjoy the weather. Working in front of windows gives you the sense that you're outside while working, so you can feel more connected to nature.

Create a Designated Room

If you have a big family, consider creating a whole homework room instead of just a nook. This way, multiple family members can come and go as they please without waiting for the other person to finish or scheduling specific times.

Make It Yours

House 9 Interiors

Your homework nook is as important as any other room you customize to your personal taste. It should be a space where you enjoy being. If the space is reflective of your personal style through the décor details, it will excite you to work thanks to the time and effort that went into cultivating a space that speaks to you.

Stick With a Simple Theme

Calimia Home

The theme of your homework nook should feel easy to work in without so much going on with the interiors of the room. Sticking with a simple color palette and a cohesive theme will help you stay focused.

Simplify Your Nook

Cathie Hong

If you're lacking the space to dedicate a whole corner or room to a homework nook, don't throw in the towel just yet. A homework nook can be incorporated into the lower shelf of a ladder shelf , so you can have the benefits of it being décor for the room while a workspace when being used.

Share the Space

This kind of shared set-up is ideal for any couple, study duo, or for tutoring sessions. It allows two people to work in their own space while also having some company. When not working together, they can simply face their respective side and continue working by themselves.

Elevate Your Space

Most homework nooks are at eye-level, but elevating the height of your homework nook makes it look a lot chicer and more unique. If you're ever feeling tired of sitting the entire time of your homework session, just move the high chair over and stand while doing your work.

Incorporate Storage for Everyone

Shared homework nooks can feel impersonal or disorganized if your essential supplies are always out of place or lost. This homework nook has enough storage for each family member to claim their own, so they can be more organized when they're using the space. The best part? There will be fewer arguments about who moved whose stuff.

Have Good Lighting

No work can be properly done if there is not sufficient light to help you see and focus. Invest in a good light fixture right above your workspace, so you can keep your nook always well-lit, especially if others are sleeping in the same room.

Change Up the Workspace

Sitting in the same chair and at the same table can start to be uninspiring after a while. Arrange different working stations in the same space, so you have the opportunity to freely move around and refresh your layout without feeling stuck.

Take a Breather

Consistent long work hours can be exhausting. Setting up a homework nook near a balcony or door that can be fully opened will allow you to step outside, and take frequent breaks whenever you need to stretch or soak in some sun.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when decorating your desk is that it still needs to be usable! I know firsthand how easy it can be to go overboard with decor but trust me, it's best to keep desk space as clear as you can.

An easy way to spruce up your space is with wall shelves! These are easy to hang and allow you all the decorating space you could need while still keeping your desk space open.

I used all kinds of shelving in my office at filled it with all kinds of decor and with how well it pulled the space together I ended up being so happy I did.

2. Personalize A Grid Collage

Personalizing a grid with inspirational pictures is not only fun and easy but it can also be done on a budget! This set from Amazon has everything you need to create a fun mood board to match your space so all you'll have to do is print out pictures!

You can either buy collage sets on Amazon or print out your own to make them completely personal to you.

3. Make Inspiration Boards

cute desk decor

These DIY pinboards are basically just the bigger version or grid collages. Obviously, they are a bit more labor-intensive than other collage methods but don't they just look SO good?! These are especially great to make if you are looking to fill a large amount of wall space.

I had so much fun decorating the BSL office so I loved being able to include the rest of the team in its design. We all had the best time customizing these pinboards and it instantly made the office feel 10x more personal.

Ready to make one of your own? You can find  exact instructions here on how to DIY one of these on your own! I promise you won't be disappointed...

6. Customize A DIY Bulletin Board

desk decor ideas

This super cute desk decor idea is one you can use with even the tiniest desk spaces. A lot of office cubicles and dorm desks already have some sort of bulletin board but if not you can easily make one of your own to recreate this idea!

Organization is key especially when it comes to creating a workable desk space with your desk decor. If you aren't able to install hanging shelves or don't have the room for additional storage units, this simple desk organizer is a great alternative that still looks super cute!

Organize your books, notepads, pencils, and any other desk essentials first. Then, you can incorporate smaller decor pieces like small vases and potted plants to finish off the look.

12. Fill Wall Space With Mini Picture Frames

This idea is one of my absolute favorites! It looks so put together but also gives you the ability to completely personalize your desk space!

You can always make a collage wall without framing the photos but this is an amazing alternative to use if you are specifically looking for office desk decor ideas and want your space to look more put together and professional.

13. Add An Accent Pillow To Your Desk Chair

blue page Pack of 2 Comfy Decorative Pillow Covers for Couch Sofa Bed - Home Decoration Solid Woven Striped Soft Pillow Cases with Fringes, Cute Modern Accent Pillowcase

If there is one thing that will instantly make your desk look more put together it's with a desk chair without wheels and an accent pillow. Obviously, a rolling desk chair may be essential in some offices but solid legs chairs are definitely the way to go if you're looking to create a professionally designed looking space.

You can go so many different design routes with this based on your style but if you're in need of a little inspiration you can find some of my favorite desk chairs without wheels , and the best places to buy throw pillows here .

14. Frame Large Posters

If you haven't caught on by now, frames almost always make any space look better. I personally frame EVERYTHING from photos to my custom printables to pull the entire look together.

This idea is one you can use for both desk decor for guys and girls just by switching out the print you frame! You can find all kinds of trendy prints on Amazon, Society 6, and Etsy that will make the perfect statement piece on your desk.

Better yet, I've got all you money-conscious decor lovers covered with my custom printables that you can download for FREE !

15. Decorate Walls With A Photo Collage

aesthetic desk decor

Who said organization can't be stylish? Switch out your traditional office desk decor with trendier options like this gold file organizer!

Fill your wall space with matching photo collage grids and there you have it, a budget-friendly desk makeover that will take your desk decor from "ugh time to work..." to "I can't wait to work!"

16. Decorate With Baskets & Table Books

Goodpick Cube Storage Bins - Towel, Book, Cloth, Shoes, Closet Shelf Woven Baskets for Office, Baby Laundry, Toys, 13''x9.8''x9''

Let's be honest, it's super easy to just throw around things we aren't using at the moment onto the shelves or in drawers especially when working at a desk. So, it may not even be the desktop that is making your space look dull but actually the mess underneath.

The perfect solution to a messy-looking desk is a super easy one: baskets. Buy a couple of cute baskets to organize any shelves and add neatly organized stacks of aesthetic table books and you are guaranteed to be instantly happier with your space.

You can obviously buy table books at your local book store or Amazon but I'll be the first to admit, they are definitely a little pricey. I used this easy table book hack in my apartment instead and it saved me so much money while looking just as good (if not better).

17. Matching Minimalist Desk Decor

Desktop Calculator, Solar and Battery Dual Power Basic Function Calculator, Ultra Slim Elegant Office Calculator with Large Display and Big Sensitive Buttons for Business (White One Pack)

Decorating your desk doesn't have to mean filling every square inch with decor. Keep it clean and simple with matching desk essentials like this laptop stand and desktop mat.

You would probably already have most of these desk decor items anyways so all you have to do is replace the normal versions with more aesthetic desk decor options!

18. Maximize Space With Simple Decor & Organization

desk decor items

See, you can make even the smallest desks usable and super aesthetically pleasing! And honestly, the smaller the desk, the less you need to worry about decor.

Accenting with a few staple pieces such as framed prints and a small mirror, and using small desk organizational products will allow you to keep your desk clean and organized while still creating a focal point in your space.

19. Vary The Size Of Your Wall Decor

ArtbyHannah 8-Pack Neutral Gallery Wall Frame Set with Decorative Art Prints, Picture Frames for Collage, Art Decor with Assorted Size 11x14 x2pcs, 8x10 x4pcs, 6x8 x2pcs

One of the biggest tips I have for designing a unique and interesting space is to incorporate variety into all of your decor. Whether it's mixing different sized vases and plants or hanging a variety of picture frames, this is one tip you 100% need to be using when picking out desk decoration for work or your home office.

DESK DECOR Q&A

How can i decorate my desk.

Some of the best ways to decorate your desk are super simple and better yet- budget-friendly! Candles, vases, picture frames, and plants are some small decorative items you can use to spruce up the look of your desk

What should I put in my office desk?

When it comes to decorating your office desk, the perfect thing you want to prioritize is your essentials. File organizers, notepads, pencil holders, keyboards , etc. are all things you will want to make sure you have. But remember, you can still buy "cute" versions of all of these things to make your desk look more put together! After that, you can start to decorate by adding fun desk lamps, picture frames, and other personal items to make your office desk more comfortable.

How do I make my desk look aesthetic?

The best way to make your desk look more aesthetic is by sticking to a design style or color scheme! You can do this even while including your ordinary desk essentials with a matching mousepad, laptop stand, and organizers.

How can I make my desk more productive?

The key to making your desk a productive space is organization. While you do want to make your desk feel personal, you don't want to leave yourself without desk space to work. You can add all kinds of organization products like file folders, baskets, and cute note pads that are not only aesthetically pleasing but more importantly will make your desk a productive place to work.

How do I make my office feel cozy?

To give your office desk that "cozy" feeling, add a throw pillow to your chair, a small rug, and subtle lighting with a desk lamp. You can also bring an essential oils diffuser or candle to make your office smell as good as it looks.

- My first, “maiden profession” - is an engineer – system technician. I graduated from the Moscow University of the Power Engineering, the faculty of the Automation and Computer Science. My first profession is till helping me at work. Everything, which has to do with the computer, - an imposition of materials for my courses and publications, documents on our exhibitions, the work on our site, - I do myself, and my professional preparation is helping me to work rather efficient.

Now my post is called – the manager-supervisor of the art studio “ANKARS”. I've been teaching for 13 years already, so, I think that makes me a teacher. I work out the models of the adornments and accessories. My students create their own works using my design. So, I'm probably a designer. O organize and carry out exhibitions – manager.

It's hard to define it by only one word. I do everything I have just named with great pleasure, and rather fruitfully. I suppose, this all is my vocation.

It seems to me that I'm still healthy about this matter.

I began tatting by accident, though my history is rather typical. Mathematic school, technical college, perestroika, removal to the “sleeping” region of Moscow, 1991, my second child was born, and I lacked the possibility to find a job on my profession. A lot of women had the same problems during those times. There were a lot of different courses in Moscow at the time, including those, which taught tatting. My mother had just retired. She had been working as n engineer in the “post box” for all of her life, and having gained freedom, she started to work at two jobs and began studying at the courses of macrame, hand embroidery and tatting. I was at home with a baby on my hands(the youngest), my elder son was 3 years old, so I didn't really have anything to do, and I began helping my mother, I was doing her homework, which she was given at the courses. This is how I have mastered the tatting technique.

I must say that I didn't see how I could use this technique for the works at that time. It was classic tatting, - lace. I didn't wear collars, napkins didn't inspire me, and making the works seemed too long and labor-intensive. Besides, I could knit and crochet (almost everyone from my generation could do it, the question was: learn to knit if you want to dress smart), I could think of and knit any object, if it was required – a collar or a napkin, it seemed much easier to me and faster too. But they were promising huge incomes from saling the ready makes at my mother's courses, and this was a stimulus for me. These promises never came true. But the tatting technique was mastered. There seemed to be a lot of people, who were interested in it and who were willing to learn it. My mother started to teach tatting after she had finished her courses. She was rather busy, considering everything of the above-mentioned, that's why I often carried out the lessons instead of her, this way I started teaching.

In 1992, when my daughter was 1 year, I began looking for a job. I had two children of the preschool age, I didn't have any grannies, who I could give them to, and I couldn't put them in the kindergarten. The region, where we lived,- was a region for the families having many children (there were 10 junior classes at the school, where my son started studying). I found out that I had to put my child on the list for the kindergarten even before she was born, and by the time she went to the 1 st grade, it would have been our turn. There was one more way – to help the kindergarten with the financial aid, which exceeded the year bydget of my family. That's when tatting was useful, I began working as a teacher, such job enabled me to take care of the children and the house.

The word “ANKARS”was created in 1996. The thing is that we were developing rather quickly. It turned out to be impossible to be limited by the classic tatting. Almost right ahead we began bringing some own additions into the classic patterns, then the author's patterns appeared. It became interesting to try to work with the not-traditional materials for tatting, and soon we have gone over to them, having worked out the corresponding tatting technique. A.Rozanova worked out a set of the three-dimension many-layered elements on the basis of the classic many-layered flower, they were later used in her author's works. Different methods of decorating the base were also worked out. Creative work attracts you. It;s a special language, which you want to speak after you've mastered it, because it enables you to express, to put into the material form some things, which you cannot express any other way. Besides, I have been interested in this process since I was a child. I have been drawing ornaments during all of my school years, I still have them in several thick copy-books. It was one of the ways to understand the world and to communicate with it, that's why I found myself in my own element, having once started to work in the decorative applied arts.

Soon our works differed from the traditional tatting a lot. We were often asked for the name of our technique at the exhibitions. And we were asked by the people who mastered the classic tatting very good. It became clear that we need to give a name to our child. And we began calling it the “ANKARS”. It's an abbreviation of the names and surnames of A.Rozanova, E.Stepnaya and A.Safonova. Angelica Safonova has finished the tatting course of A.Rozanova, and her first author's works appeared before the “ANKARS” was created, so there is her name in the abbreviation too. Thus, the word “ANKARS” appeared in 1996, but the technique itself was formed earlier, the first works in this technique – are approximately of 1994. I;ve been work with this technique from the very beginning.

Who's idea was it to create the new technique of the tatting decoration?

The thing is that ANKARS uses a lot of innovation techniques of the decoration. If talking about the author's decorative elements, then they were created by different craftsmen.

There was only classical version of the tatting with beads earlier. I had to bring many additions, which touch upon the calculation of the sequence of setting on the beads for the complex patterns, which mean the change of shuttles ( in the classic tatting it was stated that such patterns could not be used when tatting with bead by the “beads on the thread” method).

The ANKARS technique – is not only the decorated tatting lace, as they often think. Firstly, it's the usage of the appropriate materials, secondly, the presence of the authors' pattern, author's elements of the craftsman. Thirdly, - yes, it's the decoration. In 1996 we've been trying to make the definition for the ANKARS (“the technique of shaded decoration for the basis, which is done by the shuttles”) as laconic as possible, meaning that all the details are marked by the words “shaded decoration”. But there appeared too many details during these past 8 years. Now the works of the craftsmen differ probably more than the first ANKARS from tatting, and precisely by the used technique.

Now there are two schools in ANKARS (the school of Rozanova and the school of Stepnaya), the author's directions of the leading craftsmen are inside them. And the styles in conformity with the purpose of the works also differ (the “Salon” style and the “Podium” style).

The studio was formed till 1993 as a group of creative people, united by the common affair, common interests. In 1996 it was officially registered, and there was a first presentation of our art studio (we called ourselves “The Lacemaker” back then, and the word “ANKARS” was officially announced to be a name of our technique). In 1997 we were given a diploma by the “Culture” VVC pavilion for the work-put of the ANKARS technique. In 1998 we were exhibited as the art studio “ANKARS” for the first time at the exhibition in the House of Zinaida Volkonskaya.

No. You can find the list of the biggest exhibitions on my site, beginning with 1997. It's easier to say “a lot” for me.

Not it's hard to say how many there were. There is a list of those, who had finished our courses and who continue to work in our art studio on my web site in the section “our craftsmen”. This list is not complete, those students, who I've taught classic tatting, who had been studying later but got out of sight for different reasons, are not there. There also no students, who came to study not for long and took only several lessons. As to the geography – Russia (from Moscow to the very suburbs), the countries of the former Soviet Union, some foreign countries.

There are many such accidents, and I think about opening a section “The Exhibition Jokes” in my site after each exhibition. It happens that I'm trying hard to suppress my wish to begin taking down in shorthand, when some of the visitors begin explaining me what is the ANKARS technique in detail. But the brightest impression was probably made, when one of our needlewomen was entering the Union of artists, and the member of the selection committee, a big specialist at the decorative applied arts, who knows the tatting technique “very good”, advised her to make the picot square in future (it would have looked more modern in his opinion). She said “Ok” with a radiant smile.

I think, it is the fact that I'm satisfied with my life. I can say to myself that I've played my game not that bad with the cards, which my destiny had passed me.

I'd like to say “like the stars and roses”. But in real life it;s different for every craftsman. Something really happens unexpectedly, on its own. I often start with the color, I just notice some combination of colors and wish to stop this moment, wish to show everyone how beautiful it is.

Actually, each new work brings new ideas, - some not very important element happens to deserve being a basis for the next work, or an idea about the new combination of colors comes to me, - I think that it is well known to any professional craftsman.

My family – is my husband and my two children. I also have a dog – black collie, it's name is Sandy, a cat named Asya, and an aquarium – my old passion.

Do you have a dream, Ekaterina?

Of course, piece in the whole world.

Come to see the website of a great master of Ankars - Ekaterina Stepnaja:

Inside St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow

St. basil’s cathedral is russia’s most famous tourist attraction. find out what’s hidden inside..

The colorful onion shaped towers of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

Russia has known 75 years of communism. From 1917 until 1992 the Stalinist regime systematically suppressed the religious views of the population. It’s rather ironic that the most readily recognized symbol of Mother Russia was and still is the St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow.

The ten iconic belfries mark the south end of the equally famous Red Square . Strangest of all: very few people know what hides within the building that has been often described as ‘ a bonfire rising into the sky ‘ even though it is an integral part of my list of the best things to do in Moscow.

So take my hand and let’s explore the interiors of the outstanding Cathedral, shall we?

______________ Planning a visit to Moscow? Make sure to check out my guide to Kremlin – Moscow’s ancient heart

History of the St. Basil’s Cathedral

A Golden iconostasis in St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

Before I set out to visit St. Basil’s Cathedral, I did my homework. Wikipedia and an old hardcover travel guide from my grandpa revealed some fascinating facts. I’ll dispense with the details (and urge you to read them at your own leisure) and just mention a few highlights I feel like you might want to know.

The construction of St. Basil’s Cathedral started in 1552 . Back then the infamous czar Ivan the Terrible commissioned the landmark to commemorate his various victories during the Russo-Kazan War. For each victory, he added one church.

This is one of the lesser known details about St. Basil’s Cathedral: Strictly speaking, it is not one big Cathedral but rather an agglomerate of 9 different chapels and one mausoleum! I didn’t know that before either. I just assumed there would be plenty of apses inside forming one big nave! But boy was I wrong! Instead, you’ll find 10 little altars like the one above – all in their own chapel.

Another misleading fact is the name itself. The Cathedral was originally known as Trinity Church, while the main sanctuary within is dedicated to the Intercession of Mary. However, the last addition of the church, the 10 th chapel, is home to the grave of saint Vasily, who also goes by the name St. Basil.

The saint that died during the construction of the Church was very popular among the locals, and so the sacred complex as a whole became known as St. Basil’s Cathedral ever since. In truth, however, t he tomb of St. Basil is just one of the minor chapels and no cathedral at all.

Outside St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow (Russia) in bright daylight

St. Basil’s Cathedral stands freely on the south end of the Red Square. So it really doesn’t matter from which direction you approach. In fact, I recommend you to take your time and walk around the whole building once. Know that the UNESCO World Heritage Site is most beautiful from outside. Passing by St. Basil’s Cathedral the Red Square leads down to the Moskva river on a gentle slope. This will give you a spectacular view of the colorful building – totally unobstructed by the ubiquitous touristic hordes!

Now I want to throw one last bit of history at you. Like I already laid out St. Basil’s Church was built to celebrate the victory over the Khanate of Kazan. So essentially the building is said to reflect the then conceived dominance of Christianity over the Muslims. Today you will find many other Orthodox churches that look like St. Basil’s Cathedral (e.g. the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg).

But back at the end of the 16 th century, the building was without precedent . It is believed that St. Basil’s Church quotes elements from the Qolşärif Mosque in Kazan that was destroyed during Ivan the Terrible’s conquest. While this theory certainly remains highly debated among scholars, I found the analogy fitting. Looking at the intricate woodwork of the onion-shaped spires I cannot help but think of a tile covered mosques with its minarets reaching to the sky. At any rate, there are old records indicating that German and Italian craftsmen helped to erect the church, adding even more elements to the stylist diversity.

Inside St. Basil’s Cathedral

The tomb of St. Basil in St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow

Once you are finished taking pictures outside, I’d urge you to go to the main entrance. You will reach it going through a door on the side facing Red Square. Now I visited Moscow in winter and had absolutely no problem with buying the tickets nor with getting in. There was literally no queue at all. I heard that during summer it will be quite hard to get in . So best be there as early as possible.

The insides of the Cathedral form a harsh contrast to the cosmopolitan facade. Within you will be able to explore a very narrow labyrinth of corridors and tiny oratories. Each spire you see from the outside belongs to its own church. These small chapels consist of little more than the foundation of the spire and a door. It is very, very cramped!

I honestly couldn’t believe how winded it all was. The walls are, however, meticulously painted with intricate floral designs and Christian motifs. Personally speaking, I really didn’t like the decoration all too much. The self-imposed stylistic limitations of Russian iconostases are beyond me. But that might just be me.

Colorful murals inside the spires of the St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow

It’s fun, however, to explore the inner maze of St. Basil’s church, for it is a maze in truth! You might actually get lost (I at least did!). Also take the time, as you will involuntarily do anyway, to frequently take a glance at the splendor above. The tiny chapels, some of them barely spanning 10 square meters, don’t have a true apse. It is the hollow spires themselves that serve in this function. Some of the spectacular murals will give you the uncanny impression that the depicted saints are truly watching over you from above .

There are small signs all around the Cathedral tracing out a tour for you. Just follow these, and you will eventually find your way to the outside again. The exit will be through the door under the square green steeple at the front, which probably used to be the Main entrance once.

Opening Hours and Tickets for St. Basil’s Cathedral

Sleeping museum attendant in the St. Basil’s Cathedral

The Cathedral opens at 10 am and closes at 5 pm. Be aware that St. Basil will be closed the first Wednesday of any given month. Other than the St. Basil’s Cathedral is open seven days a week 365 days a year. It is important to understand that it is not an active church anymore. It has been forcefully secularized by the Soviets in 1928 and then turned into a museum. Tickets will be 350 Rubel for an adult.

Is St. Basil’s Church worth visiting?

Me in front of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow (at night)

Okay here is the deal: Visiting Moscow there is no way around St. Basil’s Cathedral – none whatsoever. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a reason. I’ll even go as far as saying that nobody can claim to have seen Moscow without having seen St. Basil’s Cathedral. But, and here comes the big but, the outstanding building only gets an average score for its interiors.

There are so many churches, cathedrals, monasteries, and convents in Russia. In fact, just a couple of hundred meters away the Kremlin is home to a handful of them. In my humble opinion, there are more impressive sights in Moscow than the cramped corridors of St. Basil’s Cathedral (check out this guide on the most important attractions in Moscow ).

Calculate roughly 30-60 minutes to tour the insides of St. Basil’s Cathedral. If there is no queue outside and you aren’t on a tight schedule, there is probably no need to skip this museum. I found the interior of the Churches within the grounds of the Kremlin to be more impressive though and would exclusively stick to these on my next visit.

What are your thoughts? Would you go inside St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow?

Art and Decor of Moscow Metro Stations

The Metro began operating in Moscow in 1935 with a single 11 km line connecting just thirteen stations, but it has since grown into the world’s fourth busiest transit system, spanning more than 300 kilometers and offering 188 stops along the way.

The Moscow Metro was one of the USSR’s most extravagant architectural projects, with stations constructed as luxurious “palaces for the people”. Built under the command of Stalin, the iron-fisted leader ordered the metro’s artists and architects to design a structure that embodied svet (radiance or brilliance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future). He directed his architects to design structures which would encourage citizens to look up, admiring the station’s art, as if they were looking up to admire the sun and—by extension—him as a god. With their reflective marble walls, high ceilings and grandiose chandeliers, many Moscow Metro stations have been likened to an “artificial underground sun”.

moscow-metro-stations

The art includes bas-reliefs, friezes, marble and bronze statues, stained-glass windows and countless mosaics made with glass, marble and granite in good Byzantine fashion. You can find the images of the former revolutionary and historical characters, their victories, sports, industry, agriculture, and warfare, as well as of common Soviet people such as workers, soldiers, farmers, and students.

Russia’s glorious architectural movement came to an end in 1955 after the Communist Party issued a decree eliminating “extravagance in design and construction.” After Stalin’s death in 1953 and the subsequent process of destalinization, his images were gradually withdrawn from the Moscow Metro. Sculptures were taken to storage facilities, and mosaics and reliefs were simply removed. New stations that were built during this time were devoid of any stucco work, mosaics, original columns or other “unjustified” elements. The party had a new theme - “Kilometers at the expense of architecture.”

Fortunately, the original architecture of the early stations were left intact, which, after all these years still look amazing.

Komsomolskaya opened in 1935. The station has tall pillars faced with pinkish limestone and blue-grey marble and the floor is tiled with grey granite. The imposing Baroque celling, painting in yellow is decorated with eight mosaic panels of smalt and precious stones. The theme of the panels represent the Russian fight for freedom and independence throughout history.

Novoslobodskaya Metro Station

Built in 1952, Novoslobodskaya is best known for its 32 stained glass panels, which are the work of Latvian artists E. Veylandan, E. Krests, and M. Ryskin. Each panel, surrounded by an elaborate brass border, is set into one of the station's pylons and illuminated from within. Both the pylons and the pointed arches between them are faced with pinkish Ural marble and edged with brass molding. At the end of the platform is a mosaic by Pavel Korin entitled "Peace Throughout the World."

Mayakovskaya Metro station

Mayakovskaya is considered to be one of the most beautiful station in the system. Based on a Soviet future as envisioned by the poet Mayakovsky, the station features graceful columns faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite, white Ufaley and grey Diorite marble walls, a brilliant flooring pattern of white and pink marble, and 35 niches, one for each vault. Surrounded by filament lights there are a total of 34 ceiling mosaics by Alexander Deyneka with the theme "24-Hour Soviet Sky." A passenger can look up and see the bright Soviet future right above him.

Located 33 meters beneath the surface, the station became an air raid shelter during World War 2. On the anniversary of the October Revolution, on 7 November 1941 Joseph Stalin addressed a mass assembly of party leaders and ordinary Muscovites in the central hall of the station.

Elektrozavodskaya Metro Station

Named after the electric light bulb factory nearby, the ceiling of Elektrozavodskaya is covered with six rows of circular incandescent inset lamps of which there were 318 in total. There are 12 marble bas-reliefs on the pylons highlighting the nation’s struggle in the World War. Other pylons carry decorative gilded grilles depicting hammer and sickle.

Shosse Entuziastov Station

The design theme of the station is the struggle for freedom during Russia's history. Shosse Entuziastov station is decorated in various colours and shades of marble, with colours ranging from dark grey to yellow. Sculptures and pictures relating to revolutionary subjects adorn the walls. On the western end of the central hall there is a large sculpture — "Flame of Freedom" — designed by A. Kuznetsov.
