Educational Psychology

Entry requirements.

You must hold a 1st or 2.1 honours degree in Psychology or an equivalent qualification, which is recognised by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as conferring eligibility for their Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). This was known previously as Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR).

You must also have at least the equivalent of a minimum of two years' full-time work experience with children, young people and/or their families on entry to the programme. Examples of relevant experience would include work as a teacher in schools or further education, or as a teaching assistant, social work assistant, residential child care officer, community education worker, youth club worker, literacy tutor, assistant psychologist (clinical or educational), research assistant (in some cases), careers adviser and so on. Relevant paid and voluntary, part-time and full-time work can be taken into account.

Months of entry

Course content.

This course is the first stage in training to become an educational psychologist. The Scottish Government and Scottish local authorities have agreed a partnership funding approach which means that you will receive a grant covering training fees and living costs. You will learn how to apply psychology in practice to work with children and young people, parents, teachers, carers, and other professionals. You will also learn how to enhance effective learning, promote well-being, positive social, emotional and behavioural development, encourage co-operative problem solving, and support inclusion for all. During the course you will take part in two practical placements, while also exploring:

  • child and adolescent development
  • assessment and intervention - individual and systemic
  • contexts and systems in which children and young people develop and learn
  • research and evaluation methods
  • transferable interpersonal and professional skills

Arranged by us, the placements will take place within local authority psychological services throughout Scotland. As far as possible we aim that your placement will be no more than one hour travel time from your home address. Once you have successfully completed this course you will go on to a further year of supervised practice in an accredited local authority psychological service. This will lead to you gaining the Qualification in Educational Psychology (Scotland) (Stage 2), and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

You will be allocated supervisors who are experts in your chosen discipline area.

This part-time programme is designed to be completed in four years and will be delivered through flexible and blended learning. There will be two intensive 6-day residential periods each year, with interactive online learning activities and self-study occurring between times.

The first two years include core taught modules that all students undertaking the Professional Doctorate Programme will take together, along with transferable skills training conducted alongside other doctoral students. Years three and four include an option module (where you may elect to undertake a practice-based intervention module), one further core module and writing of the doctoral thesis.

You will be encouraged to:

  • Engage critically with a range of research paradigms, theories and methodologies

  • Demonstrate confidence and expertise, in working with teams, to effectively evaluate and manage complex situations.

This programme has been designed to enhance your professional development and enable you to progress as a ‘researching professional’ within your own setting and beyond. To achieve this, principles of professional learning are integrated throughout the learning and teaching, including:

  • A strong emphasis on reflective practice throughout the programme.
  • Opportunities to situate learning within contexts that are familiar to you and actively facilitating you to explore interdisciplinary practice in a broader range of disciplines and contexts.
  • An option for workplace ‘consultancy’ experience that combines research skills with practice-based interventions.
  • Teaching and learning that actively includes working as a group to address issues and challenges in interdisciplinary ways, using this as a vehicle for deeper learning and understanding.
  • Opportunities to network locally, nationally and internationally

Whilst you will graduate with a unique range of attributes, fundamentally, this programme aims to create a community of scholars who display ‘doctoral characteristics’ – that is, the qualities and skills associated with doctoral graduates. It is also about preparing you for working in a post-digital world, where 21st century qualities, such as being value-based, reflective and transdisciplinary, are an expectation of professionals.

About Postgraduate Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and human behaviour. It is a highly versatile field and psychologists explore a diversity of topics, including cognitive processes, emotional regulation, behaviour, neuroscience and social interactions, using research methods and empirical evidence. In England, achieving a doctoral degree in psychology represents the pinnacle of academic study in the field and indicates a practical qualification which is geared toward applying research to specific professional settings.

To gain a place on a doctoral course in psychology in England, you’ll usually be required to hold a relevant master's degree in psychology or a related field, along with a strong research background. Fortunately, psychology is a popular course at this level, and there are over 150 courses at more than 60 institutions in England alone, so you’ll find many options of places to study.

What to expect

As a doctoral student, you can expect an intellectually rigorous and research-intensive experience. You’ll be researching a fairly specialised topic within the field of psychology, and this is likely something which you began to focus on at master’s level. It can form the basis for a career pathway once you begin to work professionally, and research topics often include things like clinical psychology, cognitive neuroscience and organisational psychology.

MSc Educational Psychology MSc Educational Psychology University of Dundee

Course description.

Training to become an Educational Psychologist (EP) in Scotland is undertaken over 3 years and consists of 2 separate stages. Stage 1 involves studying for a Masters in Educational Psychology, which is a 2 year full time course, combining study with research and supervised placements. On completion of the MSc graduates progress to Stage 2 of training - the Award in Educational Psychology (Scotland). The Award is conferred by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and is conferred on successful completion of one full time (or equivalent) year of supervised practice in the employment of a local authority psychological service. From 1 July 2009 anyone wishing to practise as an educational psychologist in the UK must be registered with the regulatory body, the Health Professions Council (HPC). The Award has been approved by HPC, and Award holders are therefore eligible for registration as practitioner psychologists. This two-year full-time professional training programme leads to qualification as an Educational Psychologist and eligibility for registration as an Educational Psychologist, after a further year of supervised practice in a local authority psychological service. There are 5 compulsory academic modules: Year 1 Introduction to Educational Psychology Practice Educational Psychology Practice in the Early Years Educational Psychology Practice in the Primary Years Year 2 Educational Psychology Practice in Secondary and Post-School Years Advanced Educational Psychology Practice These modules are designed to facilitate exploration of the following curriculum in a holistic and integrated manner: child development, normal and exceptional assessment and intervention - individual and systemic, contexts and systems for children, research and evaluation methods, and transferable interpersonal and professional skills. There are also two compulsory Placement Modules, undertaken in local authority educational psychology services, one in Year 1 and the other in Year 2.

Department of Educational Psychology

School Psychology

Doctoral program.

doctorate educational psychology dundee

The Ph.D. program in school psychology adheres to the scientist-practitioner model of graduate education in health service psychology. The training is designed to prepare students for the practice of health service psychology based on the scientific method, and to promote the commitment to a career of research directed toward the advancement of the science of psychology.

Given this mission, the aims are to prepare psychologists who are knowledgeable and competent in:

  • Research with relevance to psychology and the specialty area of school psychology
  • The practice of health service psychology
  • The specialty area of school psychology

These aims facilitate preparation of health service psychologists who will practice in schools or other educationally related settings that will meet the professional employment demands for: psychologists in psychoeducational research; mental health research specialists in child psychology; psychologists in child treatment agencies, hospitals, and private practice; and professionals in higher education committed to preparing educators and clinicians in psychoeducational services.

Program Handbook Neag School's Ph.D. Programs

Consumer Information Disclosures (Title 4, Department of Education; 34 CFR 668.43): It has not yet been determined if the degree requirements of this program meet the educational requirements for licensure in every US state and territory.

Academics & Curriculum

Although the School Psychology Ph.D. program is designed to be at least four academic years of full-time study, students typically take 4-5 years from the baccalaureate degree to complete all doctoral requirements. This involves a total of at least 100 semester hours of coursework, including 15 hours of dissertation research, and a 1,500-hour internship that meets the requirements for school psychology.

In addition to the sequence required of all doctoral students, each student will complete an Advanced Integrated Concentration (AIC), which includes a minimum of 9 additional credits (i.e., 3 courses). As noted, the aims of the program’s doctoral training are to prepare psychologists who are knowledgeable and competent in research, practice of health service psychology, and the specialty area of school psychology. At the doctoral-level, students acquire discipline-specific knowledge and refine skills across a range of profession-wide competencies (e.g., assessment, prevention/intervention, consultation). Throughout their doctoral program, students work closely with faculty in designing their complete program of study that reflects their particular interests within health service psychology and the specialty area of school psychology. As such, doctoral students are expected to develop an Advanced Integrated Concentration (AIC) that reflects their particular interests and intended area of specialization.

Application Deadline

The school psychology program admits students once a year for entry in the following fall semester. The application deadline is December 1.

Accreditation

The program is accredited by the American Psychological Association (American Psychological Association, Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242) and as such complies with the guidelines and principles for accreditation of programs in health service psychology as outlined by the American Psychological Association.

The practica sequence was developed in accordance with APA and NASP guidelines that require planned supervised experiences that include direct service and formally scheduled supervision. The primary focus of the practicum is to adequately prepare students for their internships. The practica experiences are designed to have a direct relationship to the objectives of the practicum as outlined in the Practicum Syllabus. Further, the practicum experiences are provided under conditions of appropriate supervision and are distinct from and occur prior to the internship.

The practicum is designed to provide students with planned, supervised experiences of directed observations and participation in educational settings with emphasis on empirically supported practices. In addition, the practicum is designed to ensure the student has sufficient supervised experiences to provide an early exposure and identification with the professional practice of school psychology. The field experiences are coordinated with coursework to allow students ample opportunity to combine their theoretical and practical knowledge in a supervised situation. Students are required to spend time in the public schools and may spend additional time in other approved school-related agencies or clinics.

Practicum experiences in a school or related educational setting are a required component of program completion and graduation. Students pursuing the doctoral degree who enter the program with a bachelor’s degree are required to earn a minimum of 800 practicum/advanced practicum hours across their first four consecutive years. Students pursuing a doctoral degree who enter the program with a specialist-level degree in school psychology are required to earn a minimum of 250 practicum/advanced practicum hours. Students are required to complete practicum rotations in elementary and middle/high school settings, as well as a diverse setting.

The internship in school psychology complies with APA and NASP standards. The internship settings are selected on the basis of their appropriateness relative to the specific training objectives of the program and with sensitivity to the student's professional background and goals. The field-based internship supervisors for doctoral interns are licensed psychologists. The internship is designed to enhance the development of competencies and professionalism and to be the culminating experience of the student's program. As such, the internship allows the student to participate in educational settings and the opportunity to integrate coursework, research, theory, and practical experiences in a supervised, applied setting.

The internship occurs on a full-time basis over a period of one academic year, or on a half-time basis over a period of two consecutive years. This amounts to at least 1,500 clock hours of supervised experiences relevant to the practice of school psychology of which a minimum of 600 hours must be in a school setting. Doctoral students with prior, appropriately supervised, experience in school settings are not necessarily required to complete their 1,500-hour internships in schools. These students may be placed in other supervised settings that are both appropriate to the professional practice of school psychology and compliment the student's professional interests and goals.

Examinations

General examination.

Students must pass the doctoral program’s comprehensive examination as part of their graduation requirements. Students are evaluated on their ability to integrate and apply their doctoral studies to the exam questions, responses to professional issues, and ability to function as school psychologists. Students will not receive approval to seek a doctoral-level internship or to defend their dissertation until they have passed the comprehensive examination. The general examination is designed to align with the APA standards of accreditation for health service psychology, specifically as relevant to (a) category 2 of discipline-specific knowledge in advanced integrative knowledge and (b) profession-wide competencies. The Comprehensive Examination Committee (CEC) will develop two questions to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your expertise and integration of professional wide competencies. The comprehensive exam is meant to be an assessment of student knowledge and understanding of school psychology research and practice.

Final Examination/Dissertation Defense

Guidelines for the final examination follow the rules as specified by the University. After being admitted to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree, and completing the dissertation, the final oral examination or dissertation defense is conducted. The content of the final examination is primarily related to the student’s dissertation. At least five faculty members, including all of the student’s advisory committee, must participate in the final examination. However, the decision regarding the student’s performance rests solely with the advisory committee.

Admission Requirements           Guide to Applying

Our program is a big commitment. If your answers to the following questions are "yes," then our program may be a good fit for you.

Are you interested in developing your research skills?  Research is a part of everyday life in our program. Students are expected to be active in research throughout their doctoral program, and coursework is designed to encourage students to discover connections between research and practice. Students whose research interests match one or more of our faculty members may find our training program particularly rewarding. Conversely, our program probably would not be a good fit for people who have little interest in conducting research and building their research skills.   Are you most interested in counseling adult populations? Our courses on counseling and assessment focus on working with clients who are young adults or older. Most of our practicum courses involve working with clients in the University of Maryland Counseling Center, all of whom are university students. For these reasons, our program is not a good choice for people who wish to focus their training on children and adolescents.  Are you more interested in counseling than assessment and testing? Our training program emphasizes counseling over assessment and testing. We do offer a solid introduction to assessment and testing; however, our two course assessment sequence is designed only to help students achieve basic competence in cognitive, personality, and career assessment. In contrast, our curriculum gives students intensive training in counseling over their first three years of the program; students gain additional counseling experience in externship placements (typically starting in their third year). Students with a strong interest in assessment can seek outside training experiences in psychiatric settings, such as the Veterans Affairs hospitals and state psychiatric hospitals. Do you resonate with the values and traditions of counseling psychology? Our curriculum, training model, and research all reflect a strong connection to the main unifying themes of counseling psychology: focus on assets and strengths, person–environment interactions, educational and career development, social justice and diversity, and a focus on intact personalities. As a result, little class time is spent studying severe psychopathology and the medical model of assessment and treatment. Our students with a strong interest in psychopathology can seek outside training experiences in psychiatric settings, such as the Veterans Affairs hospitals and state psychiatric hospitals.   Do you want to be part of a multicultural training environment? We strive to create an inclusive training environment that promotes multicultural self-awareness, knowledge, skills, and experiences that enable our graduates to develop and share knowledge regarding multicultural issues as well as to provide culturally sensitive services to a variety of individuals in our society and abroad. The process of deepening one’s awareness and understanding of multicultural diversity is inherently challenging. Our program is a good match for students who wish to embrace this challenge. Are you ready for at least 5 years of graduate training? Most of our students complete their doctorate in 6 years, though a minority earn their degree in 5 years (< 10% in recent years). Our program fits best for people who enjoy being in school. People who prefer a briefer graduate school experience might be more satisfied in a master's program in counseling or related fields, which are typically designed to be completed in two years. Links to directories of master's programs are available on our FAQ page .
