What does it take to get into the University at Buffalo—SUNY?
With an acceptance rate of 57%, the University at Buffalo is moderately selective. What does it take to get in?
The largest campus in the SUNY system, the University at Buffalo is comprised of eight schools, including the only schools of architecture and law among SUNY universities. While it is particularly well-known for its School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, UB students can take advantage of a wide range of stellar academic programs. UB also boasts notable alumni including Wolf Blitzer, Terry Gross, and Jeremy Jacobs.
Applying to the University at Buffalo: A Quick Review
Applicants may apply to UB using the Common Application, Coalition Application, or the SUNY Application. If you use the SUNY Application, you must also complete a supplement .
If you plan to apply using the Common Application, be aware that two SUNY Buffalo institutions are listed. You should select “University at Buffalo (SUNY).” On the SUNY Application, UB is listed as “Buffalo, University at.”
Along with your application, you will submit your SAT or ACT scores. UB does not require but does recommend submitting the writing or essay portions of the SAT or ACT. In order to increase your chances of admission, CollegeVine advises submitting this section of your choice exam. You will also need to submit your high school transcript and a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor.
Applicants may apply by the nonbinding Early Action (EA) deadline of November 15 or by the Regular Decision deadline of February 1. While prospective students should aim to apply by one of these deadlines, UB notes that students may continue to apply for consideration until the university reaches full capacity for its freshman class. If you wish to be considered for scholarships, however, you must apply by December 15. Keep in mind that some scholarships require separate applications.
UB Acceptance Rate: How Difficult Is It to Get In?
UB is moderately selective, with an acceptance rate of 57%. Its EA acceptance rate is considerably higher at 83.6%. While many EA applicants apply to UB as their first choice and are therefore more likely to be strong candidates, applying early can give any competitive applicant an advantage, and considering that the plan is nonbinding, it is helpful to apply under this plan if you are able to meet the early deadline regardless of whether or not UB is your first choice.
For the class of 2022, the middle 50% range for the combined critical reading and math sections on the SAT was 1190-1350 and 25-30 for the ACT. On a scale of 100, the middle 50% range for high school GPA was 91-96. To be a competitive applicant, you should aim to have scores and a GPA closer to the upper end of this range.
So, How Does One Get Into UB?
UB performs a holistic review of applicants, evaluating your academic record as well as other factors such as your personal essay, recommendations, activities and special talents, leadership, life circumstances, and more.
While UB does not require any specific coursework as prerequisites for admission, the university does suggest that prospective students complete the following by their high school graduation:
- Four years of English (with a substantial writing component)
- Four years of social studies
- Three years of college-preparatory science
- Three years of a second language
- At least three years of college-preparatory mathematics
Students who have not completed this coursework may still be admitted but will likely need to take additional courses after matriculating. To be a strong candidate for admission, you should aim to complete this coursework during high school.
How to Make Your Application Stand Out
Emphasize your strengths and choose the most suitable program. UB does accept applicants who have not stated an anticipated major; however, you should still demonstrate strengths in certain areas to ensure that you are admitted into the correct school for you, as evidenced by your extracurricular participation and coursework. For example, if you are considering pursuing a major in the humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences, even if you’re undeclared, you should demonstrate proficiency and interest by challenging yourself and performing well in your English, history, and foreign language courses and by participating in corresponding extracurricular activities, such as a foreign language club.
Keep in mind that some programs have additional requirements or are limited enrollment. For example, the Department of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance require applicants to complete an audition as part of the admissions process. Additionally, engineering applicants will receive a more rigorous review to assess their “readiness” in key science and math disciplines. Some majors, including architecture, art, biological sciences, business administration, engineering, exercise science, and nuclear medicine technology, admit freshmen directly, while the others admit students in their sophomore year. Your coursework and extracurriculars should demonstrate a strong interest and aptitude in your specific discipline if you choose to apply to these programs directly.
Identify special programs. UB offers special programs to some qualifying students. These programs can help you gain admission, as well as give you opportunities you may not have had otherwise. For example, the Educational Opportunity Program offers a path for talented students who have not been able to reach their full academic potential due to educational, economical, or personal circumstances. If you qualify for this program you will receive benefits such as mentoring, scholarships, and more.
This means that even if you haven’t excelled due to circumstances beyond your control, you may still have the opportunity to attend UB. Learning about these programs and demonstrating your strengths in other ways can mean the difference between acceptance and rejection.
Because UB thrives on its diversity and celebrates student from all backgrounds, it also offers guidance to international applicants. Additional special programs include the Honors College . Among seminars and other courses, Honors students will complete a course on teamwork and service learning. To apply for the Honors College, you will select it as an option in the Academics section on your application. Keep in mind that is is much more selective than general university admissions, with a class size of 350 students. Successful applicants are generally within the top 10% of incoming freshman and have demonstrated civic engagement, intellectual curiosity, resilience, and other qualities.
What If You Get Rejected?
Being denied admission to any college, particularly one of your top choices, is disappointing. Still, it’s important to take a step back and regroup. If you get rejected from UB, here’s what you can do:
Take a gap year or transfer in. If you had your heart set on UB but received bad news, one option is to take a gap year and reapply next admissions cycle. If you do decide to go this route, make sure you have a productive plan for the upcoming year. You might undertake a research project, volunteer, study to improve your SAT scores, or take classes at a local college. Do know, however, that this path is risky, as taking a gap year won’t ensure your acceptance the second time around.
You could also begin your studies at another institution with the hopes of transferring. Approximately 2,300 students transfer to UB annually. Note that there are certain minimum admission criteria for transfer students and some programs have additional transfer admission requirements; for example, Biochemistry requires a departmental application and a GPA of 3.0 in prerequisite courses, along with a 2.0 GPA overall.
Keep it in perspective. Even if UB was your top choice, chances are, you’ll find a way to make the best of your experience at another college. College really is what you make of it, and if you put effort into adjusting to another school by joining clubs, working hard in your classes, and cultivating a healthy social life, you’ll likely find that you can make a fulfilling college experience for yourself, even if you end up at your second or third choice college.

In your response, you may include how race or other factors have impacted your life, whether through discrimination, inspiration or otherwise.

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.
The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

Even though University at Buffalo (UB) likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 25 or below, you'll have a harder time getting in, unless you have something else impressive in your application.
ACT Score Sending Policy
If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.
Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.
This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 28 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.
ACT Superscore Policy
By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.
We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to University at Buffalo (UB), so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 28.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements
Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.
University at Buffalo (UB) considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.
Final Admissions Verdict
Because this school is moderately selective, strong academic performance will almost guarantee you admission . Scoring a 1330 SAT or a 32 ACT or above will nearly guarantee you admission. Because the school admits 67.7% of all applicants, being far above average raises the admission rate for you to nearly 100%.
If you can achieve a high SAT/ACT score, the rest of your application essentially doesn't matter. You still need to meet the rest of the application requirements, and your GPA shouldn't be too far off from the school average of 3.8. But you won't need dazzling extracurriculars and breathtaking letters of recommendation to get in. You can get in based on the merits of your score alone.
But if your score is a 1160 SAT or a 25 ACT and below, you have a good chance of being one of the unlucky few to be rejected.

Offering “more academic programs per dollar than any other university in the state,” the University at Buffalo (UB for short) “is about choices. You can choose many different…combinations of academics and social activities with the support in place.” Students brag that UB’s “programs are all of the highest quality, translating [into] a best-value education for students.” The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in particular “is well respected” and “works with corporate partners in a variety of ways that range from joint-research ventures to continuing education to co-op work arrangements for our students.” Other stand-out offerings include pharmacy, physical therapy, a popular business and management school “that is ranked highly,” “a solid under-grad and grad architecture program,” and “one of the top nursing programs in the state.” Of course, a school with this much to offer is bound to be large, making it “easy not to attend class and fall through the cracks, so one must be self-motivated to do well.” Administrative tasks are occasionally Kafkaesque, with “a lot of red tape to go through to get anything done. I feel like a pebble being kicked around when trying to get support or services,” notes one student. Many students point out that support services and contact with professors improves during junior and senior years when students are pursuing their majors and forging stronger relationships within their departments.
Student Body
Because of UB’s size, “You can find just about every kind of person there is here. Everyone has a place in this large and diverse student population.” As one student notes, “Although the typical student is of traditional college age, there really isn’t a ‘typical’ student—the student body is very diverse in terms of religion, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, and orientation. ‘Atypical’ students fit in well because of the diversity of the student population.” Another student adds, “There are a lot of foreign and minority students, to the point that the actual ‘majority’ is the minority here at UB.” Geographically, UB draws “from urban areas, rural areas, NYC, Long Island, and most every country in the world.” Because UB is a state school, “a lot of the students are from New York State, but with differing areas of the state, there are many different types of students.”
Campus Life
UB is divided into three campuses. Traditionally, South Campus in Northeast Buffalo has been where “the parties are,” though students say that “it’s much less safe than North Campus,” which is located in the suburban enclave of Amherst. The school also has a downtown campus but with no residence halls. The recent closing of several bars near South Campus has made it less of a party destination than it was in years past; these days many students report going to downtown Buffalo “to go clubbing.” Students living on North Campus describe it as “its own little city. We have food services, our own bus system, a highway, even our own zip codes. If you know how to play, North Campus is just as much fun as Main Street [which runs by South Campus]; you just need to know where to go.” The North Campus, which features “a lake and a nice bike path for when you want to escape from the hectic [atmosphere]” of academic life, is the more populous of the two; the intercampus bus system is “convenient,” although a car is preferred. Students tell us that “between all of the clubs and organizations, the Office of Student Life, athletics, and the Student Association, there is always something to do” on campus. The school’s Division I sports teams “are a big hit around here. Even if we are the worst in the division, we still cheer hard and go crazy for our guys and girls.” Those who explore Buffalo extol its “amazing art and music scene.”

UB accepts the Coalition for College Application (first-year students (freshmen) and transfers), the Common Application (first-year students (freshmen) only) or SUNY Application (first-year students (freshmen) and transfers). Read our How to Apply section for instructions.
Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR) is an optional opportunity for incoming first-year students to self-report high school transcript information. Applicants can complete their SRAR through their UB Applicant Status Page.
SRAR allows you to self-report high school coursework and transcript information to complete the application process for review. With SRAR, there is no separate request needed for your school to send transcripts. You are required to send one final official transcript to UB after your commitment to enroll following high school graduation.
To complete the SRAR, you will need a computer or cellphone with internet connection and should use an updated version of Firefox, Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. You will also need a copy of your unofficial transcript/grades report (e.g., online report card). You will need to enter courses and grades for which you received high school credit, as well as current or upcoming 12th grade courses. Since accuracy is crucial, you should never enter courses or grades from memory. Always refer to an unofficial transcript, report card (e.g., online grades report), score report, etc., when self-reporting your academic record.
UB strongly recommends one letter of recommendation from a school counselor, teacher, community member or employer. While only one is recommended, you may choose to submit up to three.
Admission to UB is competitive, and our students are exceptionally talented. Learn more about UB’s admission criteria .
UB does not require SAT and ACT test scores for admissions and scholarship consideration. Students can share their scores as part of their application if they choose by selecting this option on their application. If submitting scores, SAT or ACT standardized test scores must be submitted directly from the testing agency. UB’s SAT code is 2925. The ACT code is 2978. UB welcomes students from all backgrounds, and every application goes through the same holistic review process. Read our test-optional admissions FAQ .
The Honors College is a community that is diverse in its talents, interests and backgrounds. It welcomes applications from all students who are interested in becoming a part of, and contributing to, the Honors College community.
First-year students applying with the State University of New York (SUNY) Application should email the Honors College to receive an Honors College application.
Students who are transferring to the university can apply to be admitted to the Honors College through the Advanced Honors Program .
We request mid-year grades from many applicants. It just means we want to learn more about you before we make a decision.
First-year (freshman) decisions are on a rolling basis. A majority of decisions are sent in March.
The university's Early Action option is designed for students who have identified UB as their intended college choice. UB's Early Action application completion deadline is Nov. 1. Early Action plans are nonbinding; candidates will receive an early response to their application, but they do not have to commit to the university until the extended enrollment/tuition deposit deadline of May 15.
UB uses a waitlist due to space limitations. Each year we enroll approximately 3,800 new first-year students (freshmen). Students placed on the waitlist will be notified on a space-available basis beginning in May.
Yes. Students must achieve a total score of 3000 or better, with at least a 550 on each exam.
Veterans and spouses of veterans who apply to UB will have their application fee waived. Please visit UB’s Veteran Services website for more information about applying to UB as a veteran.

Test Optional FAQ
Test optional means students have the choice to include or not include test scores in their application review. UB supports SUNY’s decision to make the submission of SAT and ACT test scores optional for admissions consideration.
Students will indicate their choice by answering “Yes” or “No” to the following question on the application: “Do you wish to have your standardized test scores considered as part of the admissions process?”
Read on for answers to frequently asked questions about test-optional admissions.
We may require letters of recommendation if you don’t submit them as part of your original application, and/or additional letters of recommendation if they are initially provided. Letters of recommendation should be from someone who knows you well, like a teacher, high school counselor, community-based organization leader or employer. We may also ask you to submit a personal statement and/or mid-year grades. These items will be added to your checklist in the Applicant Status Page.
All students who complete their application and submit all required documents by UB’s Dec. 8 scholarship deadline will be given priority consideration for scholarship awards, including students who have selected not to have test scores considered in their application review.
UB reserves the right to request additional information that we feel is necessary to help make an informed decision when reviewing your application for scholarship consideration, including, but not limited to, letters of recommendation, a personal statement and/or mid-year grades.
All UB undergraduate programs will honor test-optional admissions policies. However, please note that academic programs may require additional information to support your application. Additional information will be posted as soon as possible.
By selecting “No” to the question on your application asking if you want to have your test scores considered, your SAT/ACT scores will not be used during your admissions evaluation and decision.

Yes. Test scores are not required for an admission decision to the university. However, as a Division I student-athlete, you must meet all NCAA initial eligibility requirements. These requirements have changed depending on your anticipated high school graduation year. More information can be found on the NCAA website . All undergraduate applicants are eligible to select test-optional admissions. Please note, however, that international students are required to demonstrate English proficiency (unless waived from this requirement). UB accepts the following tests demonstrating English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, PTE, SAT and ACT. Transfer students who have completed at least one term of an English composition class with an earned grade of B or better and an overall college GPA of at least 3.0 may be considered for an English test waiver.
Required documents not received by the scholarship deadline will not be eligible for scholarship consideration. Please plan accordingly so that your materials will reach the our office by the stated deadline.

The Buffalo State College Writing Center will offer online tutoring this summer to support students taking summer courses.
Tutoring will be available Tuesday, June 1, through Thursday, August 12, and students may request synchronous or asynchronous help.

Tuesdays 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Wednesdays 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Thursdays 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Synchronous appointments can be booked through the Bengal Success Portal. For asynchronous assistance, students should email their paper, assignment directions, and specific questions for the tutor to [email protected] . Feedback will be given within two business days.

The College Writing Program provides the basic writing experience for first-year students and supports and assists in the Writing Across the Curriculum upper-division writing requirement.
