It works for simple stuff like homework. However, more hardcore studying may require more than just this.

Cram.com Flashcards is a decent study app. It works like you think it does. You create flashcards about whatever topic, study them, and then ace your test (hopefully). The boasts cross-platform support, offline support, various study modes for better learning, and you can create or edit flashcards in the app. The UI is nothing to write home about, but it’s easy to use at least. The free account limits the number of cards you can make. The optional subscription unlocks that limitation. This one is obviously best for study rather than homework.

Forest is a different type of app. One of the biggest distractions during study is your smartphone. Forest helps put a stop to that. You open the app and a tree grows. The tree dies if you leave the app. Thus, there is a little motivation to leave the thing alone while you study or do homework. It does let you white list apps so you can still use the phone if needed. There are other apps that also flat lock you out of your phone as well. Google put in a lot of digital wellbeing stuff starting with Android 10, but apps like this can help as well.

Google Drive is one of the best apps for students anyway and it works doubly well as a study app. The actual Google Drive app includes 15GB of free storage. That’s enough to store projects, notes, and other study materials for future reference on your phone or other devices. Additionally, the suite comes with Google Docs (word processing), Sheets (spreadsheets), and Slides (presentations). You can use those tools as needed for writing up notes, keeping track of data or further study, or start working on your next presentation. It’s difficult not to recommend Google Drive for basically everything.

Google Play Books is an excellent source of learning material. Sometimes your text book just isn’t enough and apps like this have plenty of additional resources. Books cost money, obviously. There isn’t too much of a difference between the free and pro version of the app. For most, the free version should do just fine.

Socratic is a study app for math and one of our picks for the best Android apps from 2017. It basically helps you out with math homework. You take a photo of the problem. The app uses OCR to identify the problem and show you the steps to solve it. That way you can see the answer and also see how to get there so you can learn the process. This only works for math questions and we believe there is an upper limit on how well it works. Additionally, Google purchased and re-launched the app a while ago so we have the Google version linked at the button below. It’s the one that still gets updates.

There are a variety of reasonably decent apps for individual topics. For example, we found decent apps that help you study for MCAT (linked), SAT (Ready4 SAT), EMT (EMT Study), and various apps for specific foreign languages and other specialized areas. These apps take a more focused approach to the topic rather than being generally helpful like the other apps on this list. This lets you zero in on the information you need without requiring a ton of work on your part. Hello Christian, This is certainly a great list of productivity tools for University students. I’m currently studying for my master’s degree and finding a tool that helps me in note-taking was extremely important. I have never been an Evernote fan, but rather searched for apps with features like Zettelkasten or second brain. I recommend to try out Hypernotes, one of the recent knowledge management note-taking apps on the market, as an alternative.

Todoist is a project planner and to-do list all in one. Used by companies like Amazon and Disney, and made for everyone from students to executives, Todoist is an app that can carry you through school and beyond.

Although you can pay to upgrade, the free version offers more than most students are likely to need. Todoist includes features that help you: 

 Enter important details or to-dos in a note-taking section before you forget them

Set up projects for each class and any other activities or hobbies you're involved in

Add "next action" items, so you can always look ahead to your next assignment

Cross items off your checklist without losing them for good

Other helpful features include due dates for individual tasks and reminders that pop up on your phone or email. You can customize every feature, so you won't get lots of notifications without asking for them.

Todoist also allows you to label tasks. You can label by priority, context (laptop work, library, etc.), or any other system you want to create. You can also indicate recurring tasks, like weekly quizzes, so you never miss an assignment.

2. Microsoft To Do

A reworking of the long-appreciated Wunderlist, Microsoft To Do has continued to evolve its features to make it stand out in the field of student planner apps.

One feature that stands out in To Do is that things you didn't check off from previous days stay in the “Yesterday” box. That way you can specifically choose which items to transfer to "My day," and plan a better time for those that won't fit in today's schedule.

To Do allows you to sort tasks into basic lists that you set up, such as "Work," "Home," or "Lab." You can then add subtasks to the items on each list. For example, if your list includes, "Presentation for econ class," create subtasks for "Brainstorm subjects," "Find sources," or other project milestones. 

To Do also includes some features that will please visually oriented people. Dark mode is helpful if you're reviewing your day just before sleep or when you first wake up in the morning. You can also change the background for each list, with lots of modern and inspiring designs.

3. Calendly

Calendly simplifies scheduling with groups and individuals. As group projects have become the new normal, you’ll likely have to set up plenty of meetings with groups and individuals during the course of your time as a student. You can save a lot of time by scheduling and managing those meetings with Calendly.

Connect Calendly with your digital calendar, like Google Calendar , Outlook , and others.

It's formatted for several types of class scheduling, such as block, period, or time-based schedules. myHomework allows you to not only input assignments and add tasks required to complete them, it also allows for prioritizing and categorizing tasks, so you can focus on what's most needed at any given time. You can set reminders for upcoming due dates too, so you don’t miss deadlines by accident (or procrastination).

While you do need internet connectivity to sync with other devices, this homework app still has full functionality even when you're not connected to WiFi. 3 tips for getting the most from your student planner app

In addition to finding a great app for students, these tips can help you increase your productivity and keep your schedule running smoothly. No matter which app you choose, you’ll get more out of it if you use it alongside smart planning practices.

1. Treat yourself to a semester review

At the beginning of each semester, set aside a couple of hours to prepare yourself and get everything organized in your app and in your head. Make it fun: Take yourself out for coffee, turn on your favorite music, and turn off your texting and other notifications. This is time to get in the zone.

Give yourself time to look through your new app's features and figure out the best way to use them (or customize them) for you. It's helpful to read reviews, as people will talk about the most useful features. It's also an easy way to learn how to use the app.

Gather your syllabi, work schedules, and any other pertinent calendar info. First, enter all your calendar info for the semester. This helps you understand what your weekly schedule will be like. Then create projects or enter assignments (and due dates) for any big projects  your professors already have planned.

U.S. regulators to open antitrust probes into Nvidia, Microsoft and OpenAI

The Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department are set to open antitrust investigations into  Microsoft , OpenAI and  Nvidia , examining the powerful companies’ influence on the  artificial intelligence  industry, a source familiar confirmed to CNBC.

The FTC will take the lead on looking into Microsoft and OpenAI, while the DOJ will focus on Nvidia, and the investigations will focus on the companies’ conduct, rather than mergers and acquisitions, according to the source.

The New York Times  first reported on the investigation.

As startups like OpenAI and Anthropic — the companies behind the ChatGPT and Claude chatbots, respectively — gain steam in the generative AI market, tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta have been part of an AI arms race of sorts, racing to integrate the technology to ensure they don’t fall behind in a market that’s  predicted to top $1 trillion  in revenue within a decade.

Microsoft, for instance, first invested $1 billion into OpenAI in 2019. The size of its investment has since swelled to about $13 billion. Microsoft heavily uses OpenAI’s model for its Copilot chatbot and offers open-source models on its Azure cloud.

The  hefty investments  are necessary because AI models are notoriously expensive to build and train, requiring thousands of specialized chips that, to date, have largely come from Nvidia.  Meta , which is developing its own model called  Llama , has said it’s spending billions on Nvidia’s graphics processing units, one of the many companies that’s helped the chipmaker  bolster  year-over-year revenue by more than 250%.

News of the coming antitrust investigation comes days after a group of  current and former OpenAI employees  published an  open letter  Tuesday, describing concerns about the AI industry’s rapid advancement despite a lack of oversight and an absence of whistleblower protections for those who wish to speak up.

“AI companies have strong financial incentives to avoid effective oversight, and we do not believe bespoke structures of corporate governance are sufficient to change this,” the employees wrote, adding that the companies “currently have only weak obligations to share some of this information with governments, and none with civil society. We do not think they can all be relied upon to share it voluntarily.”

The news also follows the  FTC’s January decision  to conduct an extensive study on AI industry heavyweights, including  Amazon ,  Alphabet , Microsoft, Anthropic and OpenAI.

FTC Chair Lina Khan announced the inquiry in January during the agency’s tech summit on AI, describing it as a “market inquiry into the investments and partnerships being formed between AI developers and major cloud service providers.”

By invoking its authority to conduct a so-called 6(b) study — named for Section 6(b) of the FTC Act — the regulator can look into the AI companies separately from its law enforcement arm and make civil investigative demands. For example, the agency can order companies to file specific reports and answer questions in writing about their businesses.

“At the FTC, the rapid development and deployment of AI is informing our work across the agency,” Khan said at the time. “There’s no AI exemption from the laws on the books, and we’re looking closely at the ways companies may be using their power to thwart competition or trick the public.”

OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment. Microsoft and Nvidia declined to comment.
