Robotic Surgery PPT: Definition, Types and Advantages

Robotic Surgery PPT: Definition, Types and Advantages Free Download: Robotic surgery, additionally known as robot-assisted surgical operation, permits doctors to carry out many styles of complicated processes with extra precision, flexibility and manipulate than is viable with conventional techniques.

Also See: Autopsy PPT: What, Why, Procedure and Equipment

Robotic surgical operation is usually related to minimally invasive surgical operation — processes accomplished thru tiny incisions. It is likewise occasionally utilized in sure conventional open surgical processes. The maximum broadly used medical robot surgical device consists of a camera arm and mechanical palms with surgical devices connected to them. The doctor controls the palms at the same time as seated at a computer console close to the operating table.

Robotic surgery makes use of Robots to perform surgery. Recent technological advances in surgery have resulted in the development of a range of new techniques that have reduced patient trauma, shortened hospitalization, and improved diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcome. Despite the many appreciated benefits of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) compared to traditional approaches, there are still significant drawbacks associated with conventional MIS including poor instrument control and ergonomics caused by rigid instrumentation and its associated fulcrum effect. The use of robot assistance has helped to realize the full potential of MIS with improved consistency, safety and accuracy. The development of articulated, precision tools to enhance the surgeon’s dexterity has evolved in parallel with advances in imaging and human–robot interaction. Major potential advantages of robotic surgery are precision and miniaturization. With our skilled surgeons and the robotic system, we can now use minimally invasive techniques in even the most complicated procedures like Cardiac surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, Gynecology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Urology etc. The software is "command central" for the device's operation, da Vinci, Aesop; Hermes etc. are different kinds of the Robotic systems. The combination of increased view and tireless dexterity is helping us to overcome some of the limitations of other types of less invasive surgery. Several centers are currently using surgical robots and publishing data. Most of these early studies report that robotic surgery is feasible. There is, however a paucity of data regarding costs and benefits of robotics versus conventional techniques. Robotics surgery is still in its infancy and its niche has not yet been well defined. Its current practical uses are mostly confined to smaller surgical procedures.

In present days, use of robots is increasing in industrial applications. Robotic systems used in hospitals are becoming one of the most useful applications of robotic technology. Robots in hospitals help healthcare staff because they are accurate, precise and do not tire; in fact they are revolutionizing health care services. They play an important role in the medical field mainly from hospital pharmacies or surgeries to equipment robots. Robotics is being introduced to medicine because they allow for unprecedented control and precision of surgical instruments in very critical procedures. The goal of the robotic surgery field is to design a robot that can be useful to perform beating-heart surgery safely. Robots in the field of surgery have dramatically changed the procedures for better results. The most useful advantage of Robotic Surgery to the patient is the decrease in pain and scaring. Possible tiny incisions also cause many other advantages that make Robotic Surgery even thoug...

What is robotic surgery?? • Surgeon controls movement through robotic arms • One arm controls the camera and scopes • The other arms control robotic surgical instruments • Trocars are inserted through tiny incisions • Can be used for: • Cardiac surgery • Gynecologic and Urologic surgery • Weight loss surgery Tabor (2007)

Robotic Surgery vs. Traditional Methods ROBOTIC sURGERY Traditional/ Laparoscopic surgery • Greater dexterity, precision, and control • Three dimensional view • Better camera stability • Improved ergonomics • Limited dexterity, precision, and control • Two dimensional view • Camera instability • Poor ergonomics Tabor (2007)

Hardware Components • Surgeon console • Patient side cart with robotic arms • EndoWrist Instruments • Vision System • Assistant Monitor Intuitive Surgical (2005)

The 3D Vision System • High resolution 3D endoscope • Two independent vision channels • Two high resolution monitors • Surgical camera repositioned with foot controls. • Noise reduction equipment Intuitive Surgical (2005 )

Software • 3-Dimensional video software • Allows the physician to conduct surgery. • Robotic hardware is driven by proprietary software. • The software was developed in 1994. • Currently uses version 11. Intuitive Surgical (2005)

Is this software user friendly? • Preference for design • Focus of use is on the physician and healthcare team. • Software version 11 • Studies showing effectiveness

System Review • Dedicated special purpose system • Used by trained physicians • What surgeries can the da Vinci be used for? • Stand alone system using proprietary software • American National Standards Institute Intuitive Surgical (2005)

Advantages of the da Vinci • Reduced body trauma • Reduced blood loss and need for transfusion • Less pain and discomfort • Less risk of infection • Shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery • Smaller scars

Advantages for Healthcare Workers • Greater surgical precision • Improved dexterity for the surgeon • Excellent visualization • No fulcrum effect

Disadvantages • Expensive capital and running cost • No tactile feedback • Reduced trainee experience • Lengthy set-up times • Large layout • May require extra storage space Murphy et al. (2008)

Informatics • Half day training session at the hospital • Hands on practicum for surgeons and nurses • Off site training at regional training center • Live procedure observation • Clinical support with laboratory sessions • Staff training includes software and hardware. Intuitive Surgical (2005)

Legal Issues • Injury from the machine • Patient choice • Possibility of machine malfunctions • Physician preparation Murphy et al. (2008)

Nursing Roles in Robotic Surgery • Ensure the patient has given informed consent • Check all cords and equipment are off of the patient • Patient positioning • Thorough understanding of the hardware and software • Trouble- shooting Tabor (2007)

da Vinci Surgical System • Technology advances allows for improved patient outcomes • Minimal disadvantages • Low risk • Reliable training • Higher output with staff efficency • Continued software improvements.

Reliable Technology • Recommended by many physicians • Improved patient outcomes • Thorough training • Cost offset • 19 training centers in the U.S. • Ease of use • Clinical collaboration Intuitive Surgical (2005)
