This one is one of those special requests: Matt Meyer (an amazing 6th Grade Teacher from Illinois) asked me if I had a template inspired in Harry Potter. I didn’t, so here it is.

I know is not pixel perfect (again, I am not a designer nor an illustrator) and when I was working on it, I thought I couldn’t make it. But I sent the first draft to Matt and he liked it! So, for me it’s mission accomplished!

You're a wizard! Universal unveils new Harry Potter themed park and rides

ORLANDO, Fla. (WKRC) - Universal Orlando Resort revealed details about its newest wizard-themed park, including a thrill ride that represents "decades of innovation."

Universal Orlando Resort currently offers two major parks themed after the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The first is a recreation of the small European village featured in the series, Hogsmeade, and the iconic wizarding school itself, Hogwarts. It opened at Universal Islands of Adventure in 2010. The second opened four years later in Universal Studios Florida in 2014 and is themed to a London city street and the towering Diagon Alley.

Finally, a decade after Diagon Alley's opening, the boy who lived is returning to Universal Epic Universe, the resort's newest theme park opening in 2025.

Universal Epic Universe is structured like a wheel, with a hub in the middle and multiple spokes leading to five distinct parks, or universes. The other parks are themed after the How to Train Your Dragon series, various characters from Nintendo games (like Mario, Donkey Kong, and Bowser), Universal Classic Monsters, and an area full of lush greenery.

Rather than taking inspiration from the massively popular Harry Potter film and book series, the new Wizarding World park is largely based on the spin-off prequel films, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." The main attraction will be the magic-filled streets of 1920s Paris.

"It's really a new look for the wizarding world," said Scott Verble, executive producer of the area. "This is a more refined, Parisian take."

It's not all baguettes and cheese, however, and the park's website identifies key points of interest in the new area:

• Le Cirque Arcanus: A circus showcasing some of the intriguing magical beasts that inhabit the world
• Character Interactions: Not only can you meet notable wizards doing their shopping, but even some roaming fantastical creatures
• Environmental Interactions: Like the other Wizarding World locations, the new park will include "interactive wand experiences"
• Bièraubuerre: Don't worry, just because it has a new name doesn't mean it's not the same Butterbeer taste
• Café L’air De La Sirène: A French-inspired restaurant that aims to give the "full Parisian street café experience"

And that's just in Paris. The new park is called "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic," a name it takes from its second location, the British Ministry of Magic. The Ministry of Magic appears in various forms throughout Harry Potter media. The American and French Ministries appear in the new Fantastic Beasts series, but fans of the original movies and books will be extremely familiar with Britain's own Ministry, which now features in the park.

Visitors will enter the Ministry via Floo Powder, a magical form of teleportation identified by green flames and smoke. We're not quite sure how exactly the creative team plans on creating this effect, but they assured it would be immersive and exciting.

Inside the Ministry of Magic is the main attractor of the new park, "Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry." The Ministry itself acts as the ride's queue, allowing patrons to explore the new area as they wait to ride.

The story of the ride follows Dolores Umbridge, one of the major antagonists from "Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix," as she escapes from the Ministry just before her trial for working with Voldemort. Harry and his friends must stop Umbridge before she repairs a Time-Turner (a magic time machine necklace) to go back in time and bring Voldemort back to power.

Not much is known about Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, but the park's site classifies it as a thrill and motion simulation ride.

“She Did Not Survive,” SeaWorld Blasted After Tragic Theme Park Death

in SeaWorld

SeaWorld is once again in the firing line after a tragic death was recorded at one of its theme parks.

‘Controversy’ and ‘SeaWorld’ often go hand in hand. The release of the documentary Blackfish (2013) exposed the reality of life for the theme park chain’s captive orcas – particularly Tilikum, a whale implicated in three deaths during his lifetime, including that of SeaWorld Orlando trainer Dawn Brancheau .

The film argued that SeaWorld’s practices, including the confinement of orcas in small tanks and the separation of families, led to aggressive behavior. This portrayal led to public outrage and a significant backlash against the company, which faced protests and calls for boycotts.

In the decade since, the ripple effects of Blackfish have included a decline in attendance at SeaWorld’s three U.S. theme parks (SeaWorld Orlando, SeaWorld San Diego, and SeaWorld San Antonio), as well as revenue. Many celebrities and activists joined the call for change, and there was increased scrutiny of the conditions and ethics surrounding captive marine life.

SeaWorld has subsequently ended its orca breeding program, making its current generation of orcas the final to reside in its parks . It has also phased out theatrical orca shows, instead opting for educational presentations, and invested more money into its thrill rides and roller coasters.

Its first international park, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi – which opened on Yas Island in 2023 – also opened sans killer whales, with a renewed focus on conservation and education.

Regardless, its U.S. parks still face heavy criticism. Last year, SeaWorld was rapped by the United States Department of Agriculture for failing to hand over extra information regarding repeat attacks on an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin known as Rascal at its Central Florida theme park.

While Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ wife, Casey DeSantis, has heavily publicized and promoted SeaWorld’s efforts in animal rescue (particularly manatees), SeaWorld has also been attacked by some of its former employees for a decline in animal care since the release of Blackfish .

This week, one SeaWorld park is being criticized yet again for its animal care following the death of an animal at its Texas theme park , SeaWorld San Antonio.

On Wednesday, the park posted an update on its social media , revealing that one of its newest Pacific white-sided dolphin calves – the daughter of a dolphin named Piquet – had passed away  despite the best efforts of the park’s team.

​​We are sad to announce the death of one of our newest Pacific white-sided dolphin calves. As we shared previously, the first few weeks after birth are tenuous for all animals, and her health was very delicate. Despite our round-the-clock care and attention, and the tremendous efforts of our dedicated animal care team, she did not survive. The mother, Piquet, is acting normally and is being closely monitored by our animal care team to ensure her well-being. Our thoughts are with the amazing members of our Zoological Department who came together and worked tirelessly to provide care for this calf and all the animals in our park.

In response, the park has (once again) been slammed by the animal rights organization PETA . The group’s executive vice president, Tracy Reiman, blamed the park for the dolphin’s death.

“With this baby’s death, SeaWorld has added one more extinguished life to its tally of more than 500 dolphins and whales who have died, many prematurely, deprived of any opportunity to dive deep, swim free in the ocean, or see anything outside the dismal concrete prison cells they’re confined to,” she said.

The group went on to call on the park to end its breeding program and release its dolphins into sanctuaries. It previously made a similar call after Helen, a 33-year-old disabled Pacific white-sided dolphin , passed away in 2022.

Ocean sanctuaries are often considered the next best thing to releasing an animal into the wild. Last year, it was announced that Miami Seaquarium – the South Florida marine park currently fighting its eviction – would release its resident killer whale Lolita (AKA Tokitae) into a sanctuary in the Salish Sea.

However, Tokitae unfortunately passed away in her tank (often nicknamed “the whale bowl” for its small size) in August 2023.

The Halloween season provides an extra financial boost for many parks, but scream season does not start bringing in the big crowds until next month. That leaves August as a time to wind down and say goodbye to many summer friends at most theme park across the country.

But not at Universal. This year, Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando are hosting the first theme park events I can remember that celebrate the back to school season. Why would Universal do that? Well, celebrating a return to school becomes a bit easier when your parks’ biggest icons represent what might be the world’s most famous school — the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

It’s “Back to Hogwarts” season at Universal this month. As August was the month in the Harry Potter books and films when students filled magical shops to stock up on school supplies, Universal’s back-to-school event is staying on theme by focusing on merchandise. The resorts are selling “Back to Hogwarts”-themed merchandise bundles, including robes, backpacks and writing journals themed to fans’ selected Hogwarts house. Need a wand or a plush owl to complete your set-up? Universal, as always, will be happy to hook you up for the right price.

Universal also will be rolling out special bakery treats, as well, such as an iced biscuit that will be available at the Honeydukes sweet shop later this month. But for the most part, it’s an excuse for fans of all ages to cosplay as Hogwarts students, or alumni, and pose for photos throughout Universal’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

That Wizarding World is growing, too. Universal just announced plans for its next installation of a Harry Potter-themed land, this time at the upcoming Universal Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, which opens next year. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic will be Universal’s first Potter-themed land set outside the United Kingdom.

This land — Universal’s third Harry Potter land in Orlando — will be set in magical Paris as depicted in the “Fantastic Beasts” film series. That gives Universal Creative’s designers a welcomed excuse to craft a new look for this land, one employing a lot of Paris’ Haussmannian architecture.

But for the land’s big ride, guests will travel via “Métro-Floo” back to the U.K. and the familiar environs of the British Ministry of Magic to try to capture baddie Dolores Umbridge for her trial on Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, a motion-base dark ride that recreates omnidirectional Ministry lifts from the Harry Potter films.

Potter fans might start by heading off to Hogwarts, but Universal is working to ensure that those fans can continue a lifelong Wizarding World story long after their school days are done.

Batman. Justice League. Harry Potter. Looney Tunes. Game of Thrones. The list of intellectual property owned by Warner Bros. Discovery is massive, and an awful lot of it seems ripe for being turned into a video game. If you're thinking WB's been a little slow to leverage that library, it sounds like the company's leadership agrees, and is looking not just to make more of its own games, but to license out some of its biggest franchises to other game studios in the future.

Today on the Warner Bros. Discovery Q2 earnings, call CEO David Zaslav and president of global streaming and games JB Perrette responded to a question about the "strategic value" of games to Warner Bros. given recent "uneven performance". The company had just reported gaming revenue down 41% year-over-year due to underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League compared to Hogwarts Legacy's massive success last year. Does WB see games as a core part of its portfolio?

Seems like the answer is yes. Both Zaslav and Perrette explained that they wanted to grow the gaming business, especially in the free-to-play space , which Perrette says can help balance out some of the ups-and-downs of the cyclical console industry. That's part of why WB acquired Player First Games, developer of Multiversus, earlier this year.

Zaslav followed up by noting that not only did WB want to keep leveraging its eleven studios, but that there's "also a lot of interest among others in coming to take advantage of some of that IP for gaming, which we're looking at."

Warner Bros. Discovery reported revenue of $9.7 billion for the quarter, but an overall net loss of $10 billion, $9.1 billion of which was due to impairment charges. The company also reported subscription services were up 3.6 million subscribers from last quarter, bringing its total to 103.3 million.
