Upon checking the bag, he sees all the coins are there. But, his greed makes him play a trick on the poor worker. He claims that there were more coins in the bag and the worker stole them.

The issue goes to the court and the judge confirms from Sid whether his bag had more coins to which he agrees. So, the judge rules out that as Sid’s bag had more coins , the bag which the worker’s son found is not his.

Therefore, the bag gets handed to the worker as no one else claims it. Consequently, you see how the worker’s son act of kindness won and paid him well. On the other hand, how Sid’s greediness resulted in his loss only.

We live at a time when families and neighbors have become polarized by dueling political views. Misinformation cements the chasm that divides us. The pandemic refuses to abate, leaving illness, death, and budding variants in its wake. An astounding 838 organized hate groups operate nationwide and use social media as their amplifiers.

In the context of such rabid dissension, what can a single person do to foster harmony, compassion, and joy? How does one live with this turmoil as a backdrop yet remain healthy and happy?

Here’s a proven recipe: Contribute a single act of kindness.

When I reflect on the transformative nature of kindness, this immediately comes to mind.

Years ago, when I was newly single and trying to create out of whole cloth a complicated Christmas season, I attempted to decorate a 10-foot tree in a valiant effort to convey to my children that despite the newly altered state of our family, life must go on. It was my hope that the holiday lights, garland, and bulbs would shore up our spirits.

The adorned tree was beautiful … briefly. In the wee hours of the morning, the alarm system alerted us of trouble. Our not-so-little tree had lost its balance and crashed to the floor smashing my family’s treasured ornaments, along with the gilded angel that had graced our treetop for three decades.

Yes, it was only a tree, but I cried. I saw the fallen tree and the shards of glass and glitter littering the floor as a metaphor for my broken marriage . I viewed it as emblematic of the many losses we had experienced that year.

Unduly distraught, I arrived home from work that day to find two heroes in my living room. There, perched high on a ladder wiring the fallen tree to the wall was Brendon Cox, a contractor who was working on home repairs, while his assistant Dave was perched on a chair, delicately trying to glue tiny fragments of the angel's face back into place. These two men intuitively understood the fallen tree represented something much greater, and they wanted to ameliorate my sadness by surprising me and restoring it.

My eyes filled with tears for a second time that day, but this time tears of joy. These two generous men could have been grouting tile or relaxing at home, but there they were, wire and superglue in hand, in a magnificent act of kindness.

This sweet memory has resonated throughout the years, reminding me of how compassion can transform despair and resurrect hope. Kindness is a powerful and life-changing force.

The ripple effect of kindness

There’s an interesting theory called the butterfly effect. It describes how the flap of a butterfly’s wing can lead to a cyclone in another part of the world. It is a mathematical construct that explains how small changes can have large consequences.

So it is with kindness. A single, simple kind act can have enormous consequences.

Studies show how kind acts radiate goodwill by incentivizing the benefactor to, in turn, generate kind acts. For example, a study in Science Daily showed that goodwill is contagious and that thoughtful acts have a domino effect. One person’s generosity will spread to three people. Those three people will each pay forward the kind act to three others, benefiting nine in all. Those nine will continue to multiply the kindness. This leads to a ripple effect and subsequent waves of kindness. It is not hard to see how a single act contributes to a kinder, gentler world.

No act is too small.

  • When at a restaurant, ask for the name of your server. Write “thank you” using the person’s name when you leave a tip.
  • Surprise someone who appears stressed and let them in front of you in the grocery or pharmacy line.
  • When you have waited for an interminable amount of time to reach a customer call center only to find the representative unhelpful or curt, ask for the person’s name and say, “You must be really busy today. Thank you for taking the time to help me with this.”
  • Remember compliments are free, and true compliments shine a bright light onto others. Use them with abundance.
  • Surprise someone by sending a favorite book, poem, or small gift through the mail.
  • Bring flowers to an elderly neighbor.
  • Send a hand-written note of appreciation to someone who makes your life better.

Kindness begins by remembering we all struggle

It’s especially important to remember the powerful nature of kindness when someone’s aggressive or thoughtless action threatens to upend your day. Kindness begins with the understanding that we all struggle. So, whether you are navigating a personal slight—a curt customer service rep, a driver cutting you off in traffic, or unexpected sarcasm from an associate—rather than lashing out in response, remember this simple truth. It can be life-changing: Be kind, and remember everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.

We can never know what hardship those we encounter are experiencing—marital woes, a cancer diagnosis, a sick child, a financial setback. But what we can know with certainty is that any generous, forgiving act on our part will be met with gratitude and understanding, and our kind response to someone’s thoughtless act can transform that person’s day.

The boomerang effect

And there’s this surprising benefit—kindness boomerangs. Studies have found that your kind acts can make you healthier.

Here’s how it works: Good deeds produce oxytocin, commonly known as the love hormone . Oxytocin has significant and long-term benefits, as David Hamilton reports in his book The Five Side Effects of Kindness . Oxytocin protects the cardiovascular system, serves as an antioxidant eliminating free radical damage, and reduces systemic inflammation. Studies show that oxytocin also speeds wound healing, may slow the aging process, and is a mood elevator.

These findings are bolstered by a study published by the NIH National Library of Medicine that examined kind acts performed over seven consecutive days. The findings show that the initiator of the kind acts reports increased happiness . It further found that the happiness was boosted regardless of whether the benefactors were strangers, friends, or acquaintances. What mattered was only that they infused the world with good thoughts and good deeds.

Happy people are those who do for others

In summary, random acts of kindness, goodwill toward others, and generous deeds can lead to your being both healthier and happier. As Booker T. Washington said, “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.”

It has been six years since my Christmas tree fell. Yet I recall with great joy how my sadness was transformed into joy by two men who understood that the most important thing we can do in life is to let others know they are not alone. Their gift transformed my mishap into a blaze of loving-kindness that has resonated throughout the years.

Yes, it is the worst of times, but it is also the best of times, as they say.

Juxtaposed with the strife we're experiencing, scientists have worked tirelessly to give us access to lifesaving vaccines that are reliably combating a menacing disease. Corporations and individuals have stepped up and increased their charitable giving to those in need. When a record-breaking storm wreaked havoc in Texas earlier this year, strangers pitched in delivering generators, opening their homes, and delivering food. Shelters have been emptied as dogs and cats have been given loving homes.

So, during this season of light, go forth by remembering that, as Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Compassion is a verb.”

From boosting your mood to lowering stress, the power of kindness is real. In fact, science shows the benefits of being kind are greater for the giver than the receiver. So, as  Calvin Holbrook suggests, help others and help yourself, too.  

Can you remember the last time a stranger was kind to you? Maybe someone held a door open or offered you help with directions in the street? Or, perhaps you can recall the last time you helped somebody. After recently carrying out a few altruistic acts myself, I wanted to find out more about the power and benefits of kindness . 

Just before Christmas I passed a homeless man sitting outside a London Tube station. Coming out of a nearby coffee shop after paying almost £3 for a flat white, I couldn’t justify spending that on a hot drink while he was sat with nothing.

I started a conversation to find out how he was doing and he was thankful when I offered him some change and a banana. However, he seemed most grateful when I simply asked him what his name was. When I got up to leave, he looked directly into my eyes and gave me a genuine ‘thank you.’

Later that week, I spotted an elderly lady hauling a huge suitcase down some stairs – she was clearly struggling. Her face lit up with joy when I offered a hand. She was clearly touched someone had made the effort to assist, and I too walked away with a spring in my step and smile on my face. 

The power of kindness: a ripple effect

After connecting with these people I felt a sense of happiness and pride to know I'd made a small but meaningful impact on their day. In fact, this feel-good sensation stayed with me for hours afterwards. Experiencing this feeling has also made it more likely that I'll carry out more random acts of kindness in the future.  

Likewise, I like to think that the power of kindness can potentially rub off on the people you'll help out in the future, so that they, in turn, will be more likely to assist others. In fact, it turns out that science backs up this kindness 'ripple effect'.

A 2018 study focused on employees at a Spanish company. Workers were asked to either a) perform acts of kindness for colleagues, or b) count the number of kind acts they received from coworkers. The results showed that those who received acts of kindness became happier, demonstrating the value of benevolence for the receiver.

However, those who delivered the acts of kindness benefited even more than the receivers. That’s because not only did they show a similar trend towards increased happiness, but they also had an boost in life and job satisfaction, as well as a decrease in depression .

Furthermore, the effects of altruism were contagious. Those colleagues on the receiving end of the acts of kindness ended up spontaneously paying it forward, themselves doing nice things for other colleagues. This study suggests the ripple effect really is one of the benefits of being nice.

Kindness and psychological flourishing

Further studies back up the power of kindness. In another , researchers asked members of the public to either perform acts of kindness – such as opening doors for strangers – for one month, or to perform kind acts for themselves, such as treating themselves to a new purchase.  

The researchers measured the participants’ level of so-called ‘psychological flourishing’ – their emotional, psychological, and social well-being at the start and end of the experiment. By the end, those who had carried out kind acts for others had higher levels of psychological flourishing compared to those who acted kindly towards themselves. Kindly acts also led to higher levels of positive emotions.

Meanwhile, another study incorporated cold hard cash to test the powers of altruism. Researchers gave participants either $5 or $20 which they had to spend on themselves or others before the end of the day. They measured the participants’ happiness levels before giving them the money and then called them on the phone in the evening. The results? Those who had spent the money on others were happier than those who'd used the money for their own needs.

The physical effects of kindness

So, science shows that being kind and helpful clearly has a positive and uplifting effect on those carrying out the act. But what exactly is happening in the body? Here are four ways keys in which the physical benefits of kindness can be felt:

When you do kinds acts for other people, so-called happiness hormones are released, boosting your serotonin , the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of well-being and satisfaction. Endorphin levels also rise, leading to a phenomenon known as a ' helper’s high '.

2. Kindness can reduce anxiety

Another physical benefit of kindness is that it can help to lower anxiety . Social anxiety is associated with low positive affect (PA), which relates to an individual’s experience of positive moods such as joy, interest, and alertness. A four-week study on happiness from the University of British Columbia found that participants who engaged in kind acts displayed major increases in their PA levels that were maintained during the study duration.

3. Kindness may help alleviate certain illness

Inflammation in the body is linked to numerous health problems including chronic pain, diabetes, obesity, and migraines. For older generations at least, volunteering as an act of kindness may be of benefit to reduce inflammation. In fact, according to one study of older adults aged 57-85, “volunteering manifested the strongest association with lower levels of inflammation.”  

Additionally, oxytocin, also released with acts of kindness, reduces inflammation, and it can directly affect the chemical balance of your heart.   According to Dr. David Hamilton , “oxytocin causes the release of a chemical called nitric oxide in blood vessels, which dilates the blood vessels. This reduces blood pressure and therefore oxytocin is known as a ‘cardioprotective’ hormone because it protects the heart (by lowering blood pressure).”

4. Kindness can reduce your stress levels

Helping others takes you out of your own mind and can potentially help to build relationships with other people. Anything that helps you to build bonds with other people is known as 'affiliative behavior'.

And, according to one study on the effects of pro-social behavior — action intended to help others  on stress, “affiliative behavior may be an important component of coping with stress and indicate that engaging in pro-social behavior might be an effective strategy for reducing the impact of stress on emotional functioning.”

Furthermore, once we establish an 'affiliative connection' with someone — a relationship of friendship , love, or other positive bonding — we feel emotions that can boost our immune system. So, knowing this, why aren't people benefiting from the power of kindness? Why aren’t more people making a conscious effort to change the lives of others?

Also, some people believe that showing kindness and compassion is a weakness and will only lead to being taken advantage of. But, the truth is, it’s in our human DNA to show kindness. In fact, we’re the only mammals with an extended gestation period, and while other animals rely on support for a short period before becoming self-reliant, we depend on the care of our caregivers to provide our needs. Indeed, kindness is fundamental to the human existence – we're literally wired for it.  

Kindness is not something that demands hard work or huge amounts of time. It’s something all of us can strive to achieve every day. And, knowing that the power of kindness and its benefits are immense for ourselves and not just the receiver, why wouldn’t you want to help others more?    ●

The power of kindness! These words alone make me happy, because there is so much truth in them. The power of kindness is at the same time the power of love, something that we can always have within us and that we can lavishly give to everyone we meet. And this power of kindness can also mean that we share our material possessions with those who have little. All kind and loving gestures are equally important if we perceive with open eyes and an open heart what our counterpart needs.  I love the power of kindness and I celebrate all people who exude this power!

Another great book is “the little book of kindness” by dr David Hamilton... it goes into the science of it a bit too which I always find fascinating... ?

In many spiritual traditions, kindness is seen as the key to liberation or salvation.

In her book Lovingkindness , Sharon Salzburg quotes the Buddha as follows: 

If you are kind:

  • You will sleep easily
  • You will wake easily
  • You will have pleasant dreams
  • People will love you
  • Celestial beings and animals will love you
  • Devas (celestial beings) will protect you
  • External dangers will not harm you
  • Your face will be radiant
  • Your mind will be serene
  • You will die unconfused
  • You will be reborn in happy realms

The power of kindness is indeed a force to be reckoned with, as @Lizzie so nicely put it.  It's something we can all benefit from indeed.

Really enjoyed this article and I'm a firm believer in the power of kindness! It is so true that a kind gesture to make someone else's life easier or even just put a smile on their face makes both parties happier.

The ripple effect is also clear to me with the power of kindness; I think by having someone do something kind for you, you're more likely to get inspired to perform an act of kindness for someone else. And, as also explained in the article,  doing something nice for someone else makes you feel good, and you'd probably want to do it again. 

The power of kindness is definitely real and a force to be reckoned with! ?

I am not aware of the real numbers, did the number of homeless people in Barcelona grow in the last ten years? It's my impression because when I visit, I try to give something to every person in need that crosses my path. And in the last years, I became increasingly exhausted by what I witness.

I remember that I used to recognize the people I usually met during my rounds with the dogs. I would pack a snack, a sandwich, a coffee or some money and even when my pockets were empty I would say hello and maybe have a little chat. After those interactions, I usually walked around grateful and smiling for quite a while thinking that on an emotional level, it was so human and rewarding.

I can't believe that kindness - and it takes great inner strength to be kind! - is often looked at as weak in our society.

“Why can’t you just be kind?!?” If I had a nickel for every time I said those words to my kids…I’d have a lot of nickels. I want my kids to be kind for a lot of reasons (it definitely makes parenting easier!), but most importantly because kindness reflects the heart of God. More than anything else, I want myself and my family to be known for kindness. 

I wish kindness was as simple as wanting it. Kindness is incredibly easy and impossibly hard at the same time. It’s tough to be kind in traffic, when someone cuts in line, when we’re left out, and when we want to prove our point. If we’re honest, we all have a long way to go in growing in kindness. But thankfully kindness is a trait we can learn and get better at!

What is Biblical kindness? 

 Organizations around the globe tout kindness as an important character quality; there is even a world kindness day (February 17th!). But kindness in the Bible is so much richer and deeper than merely being nice or polite. True kindness is an action. It isn’t passive. It is compassion that moves us into doing something for someone else. 

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary  defines kind as sympathetic or helpful, gentle, forbearing, that which gives pleasure or relief. Kindness is like a cooling breeze on a hot day. It includes being considerate and thinking of others before one’s self. 

The word the Old Testament uses most often for kindness is “ hesed “. It is promise-keeping loyalty motivated by deep care. It translated as kindness, mercy, goodness, loyal love, faithfulness, and lovingkindness. This word is used almost 250 times in the Bible to describe our Heavenly Father’s actions and character. It’s a beautiful and complex word that is perfect to describe the many facets and layers of how God is kind to us. Learn more about  this definition of kindness  here. 

The word used in the New Testament for kindness is “ chrēstotēs “.  It is more similar to our modern, English usage of kindness meaning gentleness, moral goodness, benign, and acting with integrity. The word “benign” in the definition of kindness struck me because it’s not a commonly used word outside of medical terminology. We all know that “benign” is the kind of tumor you want to have. Benign means something isn’t causing harm; it’s the opposite of toxic. I love that reminder that  kindness does no harm , intentionally or unintentionally. 

Another, more rare usage of the word kindness is the Hebrew word “ nōʿam “.  It is also translated into English as pleasant, gracious, favorable, and beautiful. 

What did Jesus say about being kind? 

Jesus encapsulated the practice of kindness with these words: “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” -Matthew 7:12 This Bible verses is commonly known as The Golden Rule and it’s a great place to start with defining and demonstrating kindness in our lives. Even small children can understand these simple words and begin to develop empathy and kindness for others!

Bible Verses About the Kindness of God

God’s unfailing love and kindness is an essential part of His nature. God can never not be kind. His great kindness is who He is, not just what He does. 

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations. -Deuteronomy 7:9

In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord your Redeemer. -Isaiah 54:8

You may be wondering, “Why does kindness matter?” Well, being a kind person has many benefits–spiritually, socially, emotionally, and even physically.  Science backs up the benefits of kindness- -those who practice kindness receive a boost of serotonin, the bodies natural antidepressant. Also, just witnessing an act of kindness can increase oxytocin, the love hormone. Volunteering and helping others can even help you live longer!  Kindness is teachable, contagious and good for you! 

Beyond the physical benefits, kindness is one of the key components of God’s character. It is how He describes Himself AND how He calls His followers to display the love of God to the world. Kind acts may be small acts, but they are not unimportant. God calls us to be kind to our family members–to those who see us at our worst when we are stressed, tired, and irritable. It may be easier to show random acts of kindness to strangers (and it’s great to do that!), but it’s no less important to express kindness to our coworkers, neighbors, and family members in our daily lives. God also requires that we show kindness and love to our enemies–to those who are opposed to our ways of thinking, who are combative, and who just plain annoy us. This how we show the same lovingkindness God showed us when He sent Jesus.

Simple Ways to Practice Biblical Kindness

  • Choose empathy over anger. As the quote says, “Be kind. Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” 
  • Do a chore that is normally someone else in your family’s responsibility. 
  • Remain courteous even when you have “the right” to be annoyed, frustrated, or angry. 
  • Use a gentle tone of voice and be encouraging in your speech.
  • Don’t gossip or run people down. 
  •  Have integrity–be who you say you are, do what you say you’re going to do. 
  • Assume the best of others
  • Practice random acts of kindness for your family as well as strangers. 
  • Be there when someone is having a hard time. Ask if you can pick up coffee, help with chores, or bring a meal over. 
  • Celebrate when you see someone else being kind!

The power of kindness is disarming, it can convict without a word. When I’ve had a bad day and am grumping around, a kind word from one of my kids or my husband is enough to remind me that I’m choosing a stinking attitude and I can change it. Our words and actions have a powerful impact on others–choosing kindness is a simple way to leave a mark on our children, families, and community.
