School improvement is transformation. It is one of the most important actions of a school. It is a process that schools must use with fidelity to ensure that at all students are given the opportunity to perform and achieve at exemplary levels. School improvement is vital to schools and it is a process that cannot be done in isolation. It requires team work, collaboration, and constant analysis of data and setting of goals. As we review and synthesize data of a district for planning school improvement, the following information is needed to access and determine the needs of a school. First, a thorough analysis of performance data must be reviewed to see how school districts measure up with state and federal accountability. During this process, it is very important that schools focus the performance indicators that will guarantee growth and success. School teams must refer to the districts mission and vision to guide the planning process. The performance indicators will provide data that will be beneficial in creating improvement strategies. So, after careful evaluation of the data, the next step would be to plan effective methods and strategies that will improve student achievement. Moreover, this plan should include needs, demographics and opportunities for students to be successful. Additionally, the baseline data is important information to include in the improvement plan. Big Ideas for Better Schools: Ten Ways to Improve Education

Ideas for students, teachers, schools, and communities.

Fourteen years ago The George Lucas Educational Foundation was created to celebrate and encourage innovation in schools. Since then we have discovered many creative educators, business leaders, parents, and others who were making positive changes not only from the top down but also from the bottom up. Since that time we have been telling their stories through our Web site, our documentary films, and Edutopia magazine.

Along the way, we listened and learned. Nothing is simple when strengthening and invigorating such a vast and complex institution as our educational system, but common ideas for improvement emerged. We've distilled those into this ten-point credo.

In the coming year, we will publish a series of essays that further explores each aspect of this agenda, with the hope that those on the frontlines of education can make them a part of their schools.

1. Engage : Project-Based Learning Students go beyond the textbook to study complex topics based on real-world issues, such as the water quality in their communities or the history of their town, analyzing information from multiple sources, including the Internet and interviews with experts. Project-based classwork is more demanding than traditional book-based instruction, where students may just memorize facts from a single source. Instead, students utilize original documents and data, mastering principles covered in traditional courses but learning them in more meaningful ways. Projects can last weeks; multiple projects can cover entire courses. Student work is presented to audiences beyond the teacher, including parents and community groups.

Reality Check : At the Clear View Charter School, in Chula Vista, California, fourth- and fifth-grade students collected insect specimens, studied them under an electron microscope via a fiber-optic link to a nearby university, used Internet resources for their reports, and discussed their findings with university entomologists.

2. Connect : Integrated Studies Studies should enable students to reach across traditional disciplines and explore their relationships, like James Burke described in his book Connections. History, literature, and art can be interwoven and studied together. Integrated studies enable subjects to be investigated using many forms of knowledge and expression, as literacy skills are expanded beyond the traditional focus on words and numbers to include graphics, color, music, and motion.

Reality Check : Through a national project called Nature Mapping, fourth-grade students in rural Washington learn reading, writing, mathematics, science, and technology use while searching for rare lizards.

3. Share : Cooperative Learning Working together on project teams and guided by trained teachers, students learn the skills of collaborating, managing emotions, and resolving conflicts in groups. Each member of the team is responsible for learning the subject matter as well as helping teammates to learn. Cooperative learning develops social and emotional skills, providing a valuable foundation for their lives as workers, family members, and citizens.

Reality Check : In Eeva Reeder's tenth-grade geometry class at Mountlake Terrace High School, near Seattle, student teams design "schools of the future" while mentoring with local architects. They manage deadlines and resolve differences to produce models, budgets, and reports far beyond what an individual student could accomplish.

4. Expand : Comprehensive Assessment Assessment should be expanded beyond simple test scores to instead provide a detailed, continuous profile of student strengths and weaknesses. Teachers, parents, and individual students can closely monitor academic progress and use the assessment to focus on areas that need improvement. Tests should be an opportunity for students to learn from their mistakes, retake the test, and improve their scores.

Reality Check: At the Key Learning Community, in Indianapolis, teachers employ written rubrics to assess students' strengths and weaknesses using categories based on Howard Gardner's concept of multiple intelligences, including spatial, musical, and interpersonal skills.

5. Coach : Intellectual and Emotional Guide The most important role for teachers is to coach and guide students through the learning process, giving special attention to nurturing a student's interests and self-confidence. As technology provides more curricula, teachers can spend less time lecturing entire classes and more time mentoring students as individuals and tutoring them in areas in which they need help or seek additional challenges.

Reality Check : Brooklyn fifth-grade teacher Sarah Button uses exercises and simulations from the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program with her students, helping them learn empathy, cooperation, positive expression of feelings, and appreciation of diversity.

6. Learn : Teaching as Apprenticeship Preparation for a teaching career should follow the model of apprenticeships, in which novices learn from experienced masters. Student teachers should spend less time in lecture halls learning educational theory and more time in classrooms, working directly with students and master teachers. Teaching skills should be continually sharpened, with time to take courses, attend conferences, and share lessons and tips with other teachers, online and in person.

Reality Check : Online communities such as Middle Web, the Teacher Leaders Network, and the Teachers Network bring novice and expert educators together in a Web-based professional community. The online mentorship gives novice teachers access to accomplished practitioners eager to strengthen the profession at its roots.

7. Adopt : Technology The intelligent use of technology can transform and improve almost every aspect of school, modernizing the nature of curriculum, student assignments, parental connections, and administration. Online curricula now include lesson plans, simulations, and demonstrations for classroom use and review. With online connections, students can share their work and communicate more productively and creatively. Teachers can maintain records and assessments using software tools and stay in close touch with students and families via email and voicemail. Schools can reduce administrative costs by using technology tools, as other fields have done, and provide more funds for the classroom.

Reality Check : Students in Geoff Ruth's high school chemistry class at Leadership High School, in San Francisco, have abandoned their textbooks. Instead, they plan, research, and implement their experiments using material gathered online from reliable chemistry resources.

8. Reorganize : Resources Resources of time, money, and facilities must be restructured. The school day should allow for more in-depth project work beyond the 45-minute period, including block scheduling of classes two hours or longer. Schools should not close for a three-month summer vacation, but should remain open for student activities, teacher development, and community use. Through the practice of looping, elementary school teachers stay with a class for two or more years, deepening their relationships with students. More money in school districts should be directed to the classroom rather than the bureaucracy.

New school construction and renovation should emphasize school design that supports students and teachers collaborating in teams, with pervasive access to technology. Schools can be redesigned to also serve as community centers that provide health and social services for families, as well as counseling and parenting classes.

Reality Check : The school year at the Alice Carlson Applied Learning Center, in Fort Worth, Texas, consists of four blocks of about nine weeks each. Intersession workshops allow its K-5 students time for hands-on arts, science, and computer projects or sports in addition to language arts and math enrichment.

Communities

9. Involve : Parents When schoolwork involves parents, students learn more. Parents and other caregivers are a child's first teachers and can instill values that encourage school learning. Schools should build strong alliances with parents and welcome their active participation in the classroom. Educators should inform parents of the school's educational goals, the importance of high expectations for each child, and ways of assisting with homework and classroom lessons.

Reality Check : In the Sacramento Unified School District, teachers make home visits to students' families. Teachers gain a better understanding of their students' home environment, and parents see that teachers are committed to forging closer home-school bonds. If English is not spoken in the home, translators accompany the teachers.

10. Include : Community Partners Partnerships with a wide range of community organizations, including business, higher education, museums, and government agencies, provide critically needed materials, technology, and experiences for students and teachers. These groups expose students and teachers to the world of work through school-to-career programs and internships. Schools should enlist professionals to act as instructors and mentors for students.

Reality Check : At the Minnesota Business Academy, in St. Paul, businesses ranging from a newspaper to a stock brokerage to an engineering firm provide internships for three to four hours per day, twice each week. BestPrep, a philanthropic state business group, spearheaded an effort that renovated an old science building for school use.

Literature Review

The school improvement process is significant for all educational facilities of this type because it allows them to enhance their performance, benefiting both educators and students. To reach this purpose, schools need to utilize a collaborative approach and encourage their leaders and teachers to implement changes needed for enhancement.

Thesis and Starr (2011) consider this element the most significant because how colleagues work affects their ability to reach their potential. The authors recommend school authorities to develop professional learning communities since they make it easier to identify learning needs and satisfy them. The process consists of six stages, starting with investigating the instructional area. Further, data should be realized to identify those learner-centered issues that require resolution. Student works must be assessed since they allow an understanding of learners’ thinking. Instruction should be provided and examined by other teachers so that it is possible to focus on changes associated with student progress. Finally, educators should reflect on the observed outcomes and think of the future adjustments that may be needed.

The idea developed by Thessin and Starr (2011) is supported by Abdullah, DeWitt, and Alias (2013), who state that communication is significant for effective teaching and learning because it provides an opportunity to share information about issues faced by students and ways to overcome them. Moreover, professionals recommend using information communications technology for school improvement because it allows adapting to the modern environment and enhances data sharing practices. As a result, it is easier for educators to create and monitor strategies for improvement. The integration of technology as a part of the school improvement process is supposed to be advantageous for the enhancement of learners’ academic achievements. Williams, Atkinson, Gate, and O’Hair (2008), as well as Abdullah et al. (2013), believe that technology can make it easier for educators to alter their practices making them more effective and efficient.

Teachers’ experiences are also considered by Razzak and Lamb (2016) who emphasize the necessity for school authorities to teacher understanding of the necessity to implement changes and their readiness to alter their practices. The authors state that the school improvement process cannot be managed effectively if educators are reluctant to follow new guidelines or do not understand them properly. Strong commitment allows making the implementation of changes easier and smoother. School leaders need to realize that teachers can have negative attitudes towards alterations associated with the improvement process. To minimize challenges and potential complications, authorities focus on authenticity and guidance. It is significant to ensure that educators have access to the required resources and are motivated to do their best by particular rewards. Teachers’ emotional reactions should not be overlooked as well. Recommended changes should appeal to educators so that they become willing to implement them but not yield to frustration. Moreover, it is beneficial to think of other key players in the school improvement process because they can affect its effectiveness greatly.

While Razzak and Lamb (2016) pay attention mainly to authorities, teachers, and policymakers, Bryk (2010) recommends treating school improvement from the community’s point of view. In particular, he identifies five supports that facilitate this process and contribute to its effectiveness. The instructional guidance system is required for educators to realize how to perform their duties. Professional capacity ensures that teachers are willing to develop and cooperate to benefit their students and facility. Parent-community-school ties need to be created since they affect the availability of resources and learners’ motivation to enhance their performance. The learning climate should be focused on those who obtain knowledge and skills. Effective leadership is required to control the whole process of improvement and recommend alterations if needed.

School improvement is considered to be significant for educational establishments because it has an advantageous influence on learners’ achievement. Huber and Conway (2015) emphasize that this process presupposes the necessity to develop specific recommendations the implementation of which allows overcoming those challenges that prevent students from enhancing their academic results. The authors encourage school authorities to pay more attention to those learners who gain less than their classmates. Prioritizing steps of improvement plans, professionals receive an opportunity to cope with the most critical issues and to determine future goals. The influence of demographic and socioeconomic factors on student performance should not be overlooked as well because they affect learners’ motivation to study hard. The way adults affect students and their desire to study is to be considered.

Considering the information obtained from the analyzed articles, it is possible to identify those changes that my school system should implement to benefit its students. First of all, it is significant to identify those issues that are faced by learners and educators so that an improvement plan can be created on their basis. Further professionals should ensure that teachers are motivated to use new practices. Rewards can be provided to meet this purpose. School authorities, educators, students, their parents, and the whole community should interact to have access to the required resources. The use of communicational technology can be advantageous for this practice.

Having a clear and well thought out improvement plan for your school is paramount to the success of your school, teachers and students. Outlining your goals and areas for improvement, this plan should guide all stakeholders on their improvement journey. This article explores in more depth what a school improvement plan is, and how you can write yours and make it as effective as possible.

What is a School Improvement Plan?

A school’s improvement plan is the roadmap they follow which sets out areas and initiatives the school will be working toward for the upcoming academic year to help accelerate positive change and improvement.

A school’s SIP will help them to determine strategic direction and prioritise areas for improvement. Usually decided by the school leadership team, SIPs are central to actions, initiatives and practices put in place throughout the school year. All staff should refer to the plan throughout the year to ensure they’re on track to meet their goals.

Writing an effective School Improvement Plan:

Your school’s SIP will be the reference point for all stakeholders in school as well as acting as evidence for external bodies, meaning it carries huge influence and is integral to the running of the school. We’ve outlined our top tips for developing a SIP that’s effective, gives thorough guidance, and helps you to achieve goals you and your team are passionate about:

Take input from all of your team 

Before creating your plan you must first evaluate your school and identify areas for improvement, existing achievements and new avenues you want to explore - this information will give you the foundation of your future SIP.

However, at this stage and when conducting this investigation - be sure to ask for input from your school’s entire staff body - from VP through to TA. The whole school will be focusing on this plan and therefore need to be invested in the initiatives you’re outlining.

Also, asking for staff input will give you invaluable insight into the running of your school and will allow for fresh ideas from those who will be impacted by the changes you’re suggesting. Opening the floor to ideas from all staff is also not only a great way to build culture, but also to recognise new skills in your staff and nurture them.

Have a cyclical approach 

Simply implementing the changes laid out in your school’s SIP and then evaluating the success of these at the end of the year is not enough to see impactful change. In order for your SIP to truly be effective, your plan should be tracked and evaluated throughout the year.

By doing this you can see how your initiatives are progressing as they happen which gives you the ability to react accordingly. This means that you can tweak and alter your plan at the time it’s needed, before the end of the year when it may be too late and more work is needed to be applied to reverse or enhance efforts. Taking this approach means your SIP is constantly being worked on and your changes and improvements will be organic, allowing you to work more strategically.

Prioritise your initiatives 

It’s not uncommon that when developing your SIP you find that there are multiple areas where you want to focus your attention and an abundance of new ideas and initiatives you want to implement, all of which will have an impact, yet you don’t have the time or capacity to fulfil every one of them.

In order to work effectively, initiatives need to be prioritised so that you’re focusing on the changes that are most important, will make the biggest impact and will ensure you don’t take on more than you can handle. Things to consider when prioritising areas of improvement include asking yourself which will have the biggest impact for students? What does your budget accommodate for? What’s going to make the biggest difference to work culture?

Assign responsibilities 

When deciding your areas for school improvement a key pillar to their success or failure is whether or not you have the capacity in your team for people to take ownership of these initiatives.

Also, a key criterion for your school improvement success is clearly communicating responsibilities and roles so your team are clear on what’s expected of them and have the knowledge and support on how to deliver. It’s for these reasons you need to make your staff fully aware of who is in charge of which area, so they can lead on initiatives successfully and your staff feel supported if they’re part of the initiatives you’re implementing.

Refer to the Ofsted Framework

During your SEF and SIP development, it’s important to refer to the Ofsted Framework to ensure your improvement plan is geared towards both your school’s needs and the wider education industry requirements. Schools are subject to inspection and bearing this in mind when creating your SIP will help you when it comes to inspection and shows you’re taking actions to work toward their standards for improvement.

Furthermore, at the start of SIP development make reference to your previous Ofsted report and use this as a guideline when deciding priorities and initiatives and this will provide a clear indication of where you should focus efforts.

Can we change the trajectory of school?

Right now, most school districts are trying to develop an effective plan for their returning students in the fall. Preparing for the unknown in school is no easy feat to undertake.

As a mom and teacher quietly watching from the sidelines, education has been an essential part of my life.

Education has an impact on everything we see, do, and believe in our world. From the basics of reading and writing to entrepreneurship and the economy, school is more than a home for academics.

Schools Today

In traditional schools (when we're not in a pandemic), students typically attend a regular school day according to age, grade-level, test score outcomes, and unique learning needs. Academically, a typical pattern of learning content, memorizing it, and taking standardized tests, for the most part, is still the way we run schools today.

Following this traditional way of teaching is no fault of educators. Many factors impact a child's education, from state and federal requirements to school boards and funding. Educators unfortunately, do not have a significant voice at this table.

We also have four generations of educators in the classroom today—those who grew up without a computer, and those who held the world in their pocket. The differences in each generation is so great, it can be difficult to get everyone on board with massive changes. Taking small steps in changing curriculum outcomes is always a good start.

In effective schools, especially at the high school level, students have the opportunity to build long lasting relationships among their peers and educators. They learn and grow together. They can discover their passions, and take classes that suit their interests. They have a chance to grow, boost their talents, focus on career choices, shadow industries, have access to career guides and mentors, problem-solve, learn to question, debate, and discuss critical topics. They also learn how to work together and independently—while developing essential social and emotional skills.

Finally, an effective school sees each student as a whole child, and emphasizes positive developmental growth without the worry of constant grades and testing.

All of these experiences listed above help young adults become engaged and active citizens, and contributes to the world in meaningful ways. 

Learning is a life-long journey that should never end.

The Economy

Education has a tremendous impact on the economy. According to  Investopedia , "A country's economy becomes more productive as the proportion of educated workers increases since educated   workers can more efficiently carry out tasks that require literacy and critical thinking. 

In this sense, education is an investment in human capital, similar to an investment in better equipment."

However, we must ask, “What type of education do our students need today for a strong economic future?”

Education In 2020

It is now the second half of 2020, and although we don't have to change everything about education, we have a unique opportunity to look outside of the traditional school walls, and bring in some new ideas that can change the future for the better.

Mental Health First

If we took this time right now, here are a few suggestions on how we could potentially make school a better fit for the times ahead.

Social and Emotional —Before anything, we must put Maslow's Theory in practice before Bloom's Taxonomy when students come back to school.

Institutions should provide social and emotional support immediately to ensure all teachers, staff, and school administrators are getting the help they need during such a stressful time—and this support should always continue regardless of the situation.

Before the pandemic, depression and suicide rates were already exploding. When students return, they are going to need more emotional and social support than ever. Nobody will know what our kids went through during this time of absence. Schools must acknowledge, understand, and support students to their best potential.

Planning for the Future in Education: How We Can Improve Academic and Better Career Outcomes Now

Create Work and Business Relationships— Create high school and local business partnerships programs. Include input from high school juniors and seniors and have them assist in the design of a program. Listen to their voices and passions. Provide students with opportunities to shadow different industries, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs. Put students in the driver's seat and work with them as a listener, learner, and guide. Mentor students and show them how to become mentors to underclassmen. 

Exemplify Entrepreneurship —We are facing unusual days ahead, and the future is unknown. Teach kids how to think for themselves and show them it’s alright to ask questions. Innovate with them, and help them to change the world through their ideas. Most students don't believe in themselves because society has been telling them what to do, how to behave, and what’s right or wrong. Without the ability to think and question for themselves, students cannot live up to their full potential. Engage them in their creative side, and show them it’s okay to fail, get up, and build again. They may look at you oddly at first, but the future wins can be immeasurable.

Encourage Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills— Teachers can create lessons that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills with almost any given content area or topic. Challenge students to rise above the bar because you know they can do it. 

Understand Students' Personalities— Introvert, ambivert, and extroverted personalities all have distinctive characteristics, and different areas of comfort when it comes to attending school.

When I went through all of my years of teacher training, I didn’t learn about students' personalities until my last class during my M.Ed. I didn’t realize how every educator had a significant impact on a student's learning experience when they didn’t understand the differences among personalities. Teachers must know their students' characteristics, unique learning needs, and plan accordingly to fit their learning styles best.

Focus on Careers —For older students, teach them how to focus on careers with their hearts and their heads. This type of teaching means helping students make smart decisions when it comes to college, careers, and future planning. Passion is critical, but we want our students to land a job in a field where we expect growth to occur.

The College Narrative— Our society has changed rapidly, but the college narrative has stayed the same for many years. It is important to let students know they have many choices. College is not the best fit for everyone and is not the only path—and that’s okay. Also, going to college today does not guarantee a great job right after graduation. Learning is a never-ending journey that doesn’t stop. College can be critical especially for certain trained skills and potential future earnings, but it is not the single journey to success today. 

The college story should match the world we live in today—one filled with options, different ways to learn, and work-study programs that can benefit students and leave them without debt. Our students need to start above the ground—they should not come out of college at such a young age with piles of debt, stress, and worry.

Learn with Students —When you learn with your students, you can connect with them. You are showing vulnerability, and that can help raise a child's self-esteem. Grow with your students, listen to their world—hear their stories.

Analysis of the School Improvement Plan

The purpose of a school improvement plan is to outline the steps that will be taken to raise student success and provide a timeline for implementing those steps. It is common practice for school leadership teams to utilize a document called a School Improvements Plan SIP or Schools Development Program SDP to outline their long-term objectives and goals for the school. A school’s core beliefs will serve as the foundation for its School Improvement Plan, which details the steps and materials required to reach its goals (Bandur et al., 2022). Governors and students should all have access to it on the school’s website. It is crucial for a School Improvement Plan SIP to be founded on data about the school’s present standing and to set achievable goals based on what would help kids succeed. It is a continuing, dynamic document that receives regular updates throughout the year. This paper will analyze or give more details on the School Improvement Plan.

The school improvement plans of Brentwood Elementary School

Brentwood Elementary School, the smallest of the elementary public institutions in the district, educates students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of our families choose to rent rather than own. Thus while most of our residents live in single-family homes, a sizable minority do not. The percentage of our student body that needs economic aid has been rising. However, we continue to prioritize all of our student’s academic and social success, regardless of their family’s ability to pay (Creemers et al., 2022). The school’s mission and philosophy have stayed the same throughout its 59-year history, despite the building’s numerous renovations and additions to meet the changing requirements of the learners and faculty. Our community is well regarded as kind and accepting of all people. Across grades 3-5 at Brentwood, students can choose from one of three class periods, with an average class size of 23 students. There is a music teacher, an art teacher, a PE teacher, and two specialized educators at Brentwood. Students who need them can access school psychology, speech, vocational, and physical therapy, and English language learner ELL treatments. Furthermore, ten kids from kindergarten through fifth grade are enrolled in the district’s Autism Program at Brentwood.

Component 1: Requires an evaluation in Depth

As a school that values the whole child, Brentwood Elementary School instructs its young charges on the value of service to society and the significance of doing well for the greater good. We have found that emphasizing the following values as a community has helped us achieve our goals: honesty, dependability, respect for the ecosystem, and integrity (Goldberg et al., 2022). Our methods include teaching, demonstrating, displaying, announcing, and rewarding pupils. Because of these beliefs, we can put our attention where it belongs: developing our character and making the most of our efforts. A representative from the school is recognized at each month’s School Board session, and each classroom picks one personality value winner to display in the corridor. Tonight is a very special opportunity for children and their families to witness the benefits of exhibiting excellent character firsthand. Our school motto is Excellence in Achievements, Habits, Actions, and Growth Mindset, and these are the four main areas where we place our emphasis. Teachers at our school talk about and demonstrate appropriate behavior across the facility. The school promise encourages students to take charge of their scholastic and social development by emphasizing the importance of leadership. Students who exhibit these qualities are acknowledged and rewarded through a ticket system, with winners announced each week during morning assembly and presented with gifts during lunch. We take pictures once a week to use in our newsletters to parents and to hang up around the school.

The teachers in Brentwood adapt their teachings to each student’s strengths and weaknesses. Regardless of their background or their difficulties, all youngsters should be able to reach the same great achievements. Teachers and other school community members work hard to tailor their lessons and provide extra help for challenged children to keep up with their peers. In the fall of 2021, the Brentwood School District launched a weekly after-school learning group called Brentwood Brain Builders to help kids in grades 2-5 who struggle with reading and arithmetic. There is a program where teachers and aides remain for an extra hour after school to help children who need it succeed in a regular classroom environment (Klein, and Schwanenberg, 2022). Providing homeward-bound transportation ensures that all students may participate in extracurricular activities; the success of Brentwood’s students may be attributed to the school’s emphasis on data-driven, individualized Education for small groups. All across our building, teachers, aides, and even some parents are working with small groups of children to help them practice what they have learned and give them more customized feedback. In order to focus our efforts in the most productive way possible, we appreciate and respect the designated intervention times.

Results in Education of Brentwood Elementary School

Each year, students at Brentwood Elementary take both summative and diagnostic assessments. The summative data on student success and development in the Plainfield Local Education Corporation may be accessed through ILEARN. That is one element of important, relevant data that helps teachers when they are making lesson plans. The Literacy and Mathematics tests, DIBELS, in-class evaluations, fast checks, and instructor observations will all be used to compile formative data for the school year. Several main exams are given to students in Plainfield every year, from elementary through twelfth grade (Nehez & Blessing, 2022). The accompanying data originates through the annual performance statements and data fragmentation in our evaluations. We know that raising expectations for students’ growth and accomplishment, implementing rigorous professional advancement software for teachers, ensuring that lessons are aligned with coursework standards, forging close alliances with parents, and holding students to those preconceptions will result in improved academic outcomes.

Curriculum and Education

Brentwood Elementary offers a variety of extracurricular activities to its varied student body to supplement our core program, including is based on Indiana Academic Standards. Every year, grading levels connect school instructional maps with new materials and State Guidelines to set the groundwork for the greatest prospective student performance outcomes. Core teaching, intervention, and rehabilitation are provided through a variety of approaches, including whole company, small group, individual practice, and one training, depending on the requirements of each student (Tata, Ekundayo, and Baxter, 2022). Weekly PLCs are used to collaborate on ideas and resources for personalizing instruction and improving student progress. Teachers constantly analyze data from instructional assessments and assignments, NWEA and DIBELS performance reporting, and standardized testing to search for patterns and regions of weakness and concern. Formative evaluations, including tests, exit tickets, brief homework assignments, and collaborative projects, are used to monitor student proficiency and check for knowledge during the learning process. Teachers use them frequently to shape their teaching for the preceding days of a subject or standard before moving on to summative assessments and final projects. Every Day, a computer is integrated into the curriculum to improve student achievement through enrichment and intervention opportunities. Brentwood’s master calendar offers unbroken blocks of educational time for literacy and arithmetic Responsive to Instruction RTI methodology at each classroom level, allowing instructors to separate students throughout grade levels and personalize teaching to bridge performance gaps. Throughout the height of the global epidemic, however, students stayed in their schools during RTI. They used innovation assistance for intervention when students were not part of the professor’s small subgroup. Data group sessions are held frequently to analyze the efficacy of the student’s therapy and make modifications to match his or her requirements.

Intervention Reaction

Brentwood Elementary School uses Northwest Assessment Association exams, classroom achievement on unit evaluations, and daily inspections by teaching staff to identify kids who were functioning beneath grade level in literacy and arithmetic. All adolescents take a benchmark examination for Literacy and Math at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. Elementary grade teachers additionally evaluate reading comprehension skills by administering DIBELS Democratic Determinants of Basic Early Writing Instruction to each kid and subsequently progress monitoring those who fall behind proficiency levels targets every quarter to assess early literacy improvement. Regular data sessions with the principal and grade-level instructors identify students performing intellectually below grade level. Learners are classified as Tier 1, Grade 2, or Coordinate the various based upon this information. Teachers may change the sorts of therapies delivered and cycle students in and out of subgroups as needed, thanks to this frequent performance report tracking.

Basic arithmetic skills, scenario resolution, and information development are all addressed in comparatively tiny settings during math rehabilitation. Envision Interventions Kit, Heads up Mathematics, and Mountains Math were the programs used. Computer-based therapies such as Success maker, Moby Max, Math seed, and Lausanne Math are utilized more by pupils in Tier 3.

Participation in Family and Society

The level of engagement of families and the wider community is exceptional at Brentwood Elementary. We encourage parents and local industry owners to participate in their children’s Education by giving them several chances to do so. Many residents and volunteers spend hours each month at Brentwood in various professions. Family members often help in the classroom by making photocopies, putting up bulletin boards, coaching children, or working with instructors on learning centers and stations. Volunteers from local corporations and retirement communities known as Study Buddies meet with kids one-on-one once a week to help those with difficulty in school. Students in Brentwood commonly keep in touch with their Study Buddies from one year to the next. The atmosphere has been set up to be conducive to study and safety for the learner. Parents and guardians are actively engaged in young children’s Education through recreational activities such as discussions with teachers, internet communication, monthly publications, field excursions, and the Parent Teacher Association PTO. The PTO at Brentwood holds regular meetings every month. In order to inform the community about forthcoming activities and chances to donate to the school, they use the educational newsletter and digital media. Grants from the PTO assists supply teachers with things like resources for hands-on, active learning, flexible arrangements, and more, all of which contribute to a more welcoming classroom setting for all children. Every semester, the PTO organizes and finances several entertaining events for students’ families to participate in. grandparents’ Day, a Regional Book Fair, Morning tea with Families, a Fundraising event, the Brentwood Symphonic Band and Exhibition are just a few of the activities that the town hosts.

In conclusion, school leaders require unique abilities, including the ability to objectively analyze issues and creatively devise solutions to implement an improvement strategy for their school. Ability to effectively convey your ideas for the school’s improvement strategy to faculty and administration. The capacity to inspire and persuade others to adopt new practices is a hallmark of effective leadership. This can take the form of convincing school officials and educators to implement novel after-school programs that keep students engaged and learning even after school is out. Such leadership capabilities, along with other crucial knowledge and abilities applicable to the area of Education needed to execute SIPs, can be developed through pursuing a Master of Education. A master’s degree is typically required for educators who aspire to move through the ranks and implement educational changes through SIPs, including school administrators and other high-ranking administrators. Based on data collected by the BLS in 2018, the median annual income for elementary, intermediate, and high school leaders was $95,310, while the median compensation for postsecondary administrators was $94,340. Between 2018 and 2028, the Bureau of Employment Statistics predicts a 4% increase in demand for principals and a 7% growth for postsecondary executives.

School would be so much better than now and maybe we would actually enjoy going if we changed the school. Lots of people aren’t satisfied with our school overall. Because of that, we should improve the school by adding and changing the classes, changing the day’s structure, and having more school interactions. Several things should be changed about our current classes. First of all, we need to have a bigger variety of classes that we can take. School should definitely start later. Their brains would function better and they would be more awake to pay attention in class. Students would probably stop dozing off and falling asleep if school started later. Another reason why school should start later is because students would get more sleep. Depending on how far away students live from the school, they would have to wake up as early as five so they can get ready and catch their bus on time. Lots of the students here are probably sleep deprived because they can’t fall asleep at night probably from stress, anxiety, insomnia, or even just homework. Students also have their extracurricular activities that make them have to push homework aside and do it later causing them to stay up late. If school started later, then students would be able to regain the sleep they need and function better at school. Another thing that should be changed about the school day is to give us a longer lunch. You would think that about forty-five minutes would be long enough but most people get school lunches and have to wait a long time before they can actually get their lunch. Being the last zone called only gives you around 15 minutes or less to eat and clean your table. When you only get 15 minutes left to eat then you can’t really socialize with your friends anymore because you are eating. Improving a School Hope springs eternal, or so the old maxim goes -- but is there hope for a middle school in New Jersey that lags behind expected standards and shows only vague signs of being able to lift itself up out of the morass of failure? Indeed, what is to be done for the students and the community their families live in when their public school is a violent place where chaos rules? What is the solution for a public middle school when student achievement is below acceptable levels and when the school is actually unsafe? And further, what is the solution for a school -- Grace Dunn Middle School in Trenton, New Jersey -- that is poorly maintained and there is a near-constant turnover of teachers? These are some of the issues that face Grace Dunn Middle School. There are several more important issues that must be addressed before Dunn Middle School can be brought up to standards that are expected of public schools in New Jersey. Among those issues is the fact that there is a great deal of pressure on the Dunn Middle School administration to simply pass underachieving students for the sake of moving them on and out of the school. This is unconscionable on the part of the administration, and moreover it is abhorrent to the basic concept of helping young people learn and grow in a positive environment. The New Jersey School Performance report indicates that Dunn Middle School "…significantly lags in comparison to schools across the state" vis-a-vis scholarship and academic performance (www.state.nj.us). Dunn Middle School does not meet state standards when it comes to getting students ready for a career, or for higher education. Isn't getting young people ready for the rest of their lives -- isn't the real purpose of a public school -- to prepare children for their future, no matter whether it is to be working in a factory, selling used cars, or as a computer technician for IBM? As a Principal Candidate -- What are my passions and goals? It is all well and good to have assessments and to collect data and analyze the data juxtaposed with data from other middle schools. And it is... The decision to hire me must be based not only on my successful career in education, and on my degrees and the special praise I have received in my many letters of recommendation. It must be based on my enthusiasm for children, no matter what ethnic or socioeconomic situation they hail from. It must be based on my belief that schools can be turned around.
