In order to drive professionally you must also pass the driver CPC case study test (also known as the Driver CPC case study theory test - Step 2). Both the truck and the bus case study tests ask you to look at three real-life situations a professional driver might face.

Each case study test is computer-based and user-friendly, and works as follows:

  • you will be asked 15 questions on each of three real-life driver situations
  • to pass you must score at least 5 out of 15 in each situation and have an overall score of at least 28 out of 45.

You can prepare for the case study test by reading and learning the Rules of the Road. There are a wide range of official printed, digital and online learning materials available.

Case study test learning resources

To prepare for your case study test you should study the following:

  • The Official driver theory test truck and bus book , available online or in most book shops
  • The Rules of the Road

The RSA also has  approved Driver CPC Trainers  who can help you pass the CPC case study test.

How to book your case study test

If you want to become a category C (CPC truck) or category D (CPC bus) driver you must pass a case study test.

You must have passed the Driver CPC theory test (Step 1) in the relevant category before you can sit your case study test.

You have the option to sit it at any of the  40+ theory test centre locations nationwide.

If you're ready, you can go ahead and book your case study test online now.

driver-theory-test

Book your case study test

Book, reschedule or cancel a CPC theory (case study) test

Rescheduling or cancelling your case study test

You can reschedule or cancel your case study test online.

You must submit your cancellation or rescheduling request at least five days before your test booking. These five days must include three working days.

Your case study test result

When you complete your case study test you will be given a score report. This will tell you whether you have passed or failed your test.

If you've passed

When you pass the case study test you are issued with a driver CPC case study test certificate. This is valid for up to two years. You should apply for a learner permit within that time. After two years the certificate will no longer be valid and you will have to pay for and sit the case study test again.

If you're unsuccessful

If you're unsuccessful at your case study test, you'll get a score report with feedback telling you where you went wrong. Pay attention to these areas as they will help with your revision and give you a better chance of passing next time.

You can  book another case study  test straight away, but you can't take it for another three clear working days.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. But we would not recommend this as the multiple choice theory test can take up to 3 hours to complete (depending on which theory test you have applied for) and the case study test takes 1.5 hours to complete.

No. Once you have passed the theory test in the relevant category you can go ahead and apply for your learner permit straight away and take your case study test at a later time.

No, but you must pass the case study test before you can apply for and complete the CPC walk around test.

Trusted by 100,000s worldwide:

How2Become-Guideance-Since 2005-Icon

Why do I need to take a Case Study Assessment? The Case Study Assessment Test is a crucial component of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification for several reasons. Firstly, it assesses drivers’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, ensuring they can make informed decisions on the road. Secondly, it promotes ongoing learning and adaptation to changes within the transportation industry, enhancing drivers’ competency and professionalism. Lastly, the test standardises evaluation criteria, ensuring all CPC holders meet consistent standards of excellence, thereby enhancing public trust and safety. In essence, the Case Study Assessment Test plays a pivotal role in upholding the integrity of the profession and safeguarding road users by ensuring drivers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to operate safely and responsibly.

ABOUT THE DRIVER CPC  CASE STUDY ASSESSMENT

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) Case Study Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation tool designed to test drivers’ ability to apply their knowledge and expertise in real-world scenarios. Through a series of carefully crafted case studies, drivers are presented with challenging situations that they may encounter during their professional driving careers. These case studies cover a wide range of topics, including road safety, vehicle maintenance, driver health and well-being, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. By assessing how drivers analyse, prioritise, and respond to these scenarios, the Case Study Assessment provides valuable insights into their practical skills, decision-making abilities, and overall readiness to operate safely and effectively on the road.

Moreover, the Case Study Assessment serves as a dynamic learning experience for drivers, offering opportunities to deepen their understanding of industry standards, best practices, and emerging issues. By engaging with realistic case studies, drivers are encouraged to reflect on their own practices, identify areas for improvement, and stay abreast of developments within the transportation sector. The test itself is made up of 50 questions presented in groups of 6-8 questions per scenario. The test will contain six different scenarios.

Background information

The scenario often begins with background information, setting the context for the situation. This may include details about the driver’s route, the type of vehicle being operated, weather conditions, traffic conditions, and any relevant logistical considerations.

Problem or challenge

The Questions may presents a specific problem or challenge that the driver must address. This could involve issues such as vehicle breakdowns, traffic accidents, adverse weather conditions, road closures, or compliance with regulations.

Decision points

The scenario typically includes decision points where the driver must make choices about how to respond to the situation. These decisions may involve prioritising safety, managing time constraints, communicating with relevant parties, or complying with legal requirements.

Consequences

The scenario outlines the potential consequences of different courses of action taken by the driver. This could include implications for safety, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and the driver’s professional reputation.

Once you have a provisional licence you can book the CPC part 2 case studies test. It does not matter if you have yet to pass the Driver CPC part 1 theory test.

Licence for Driver CPC Case Study Test

After you book CPC module 2 (case studies test) you will need to take one of these driver licences with you:

  • Great Britain photocard driving licence.
  • Northern Ireland photocard driving licence and paper counterpart.
  • EU photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart if you have it).

Note : You may not have a photocard driving licence. In this case, take your paper driver’s licence and a valid passport. Failing to have the right documents means they will cancel your test and you will lose the fee.

How CPC Part 2 Test Works

Seven different short story case studies make up part two of the test. They are based on real situations that you may come across while driving Lorries or buses for a living . But, you will work through each of the scenarios on a computer.

Note : You need to answer between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions for each case CPC case study test. The CPC part 2 test will last for 1 hour and 15 minutes. The CPC module 2 pass mark is 40 out of 50 (at least 80%).

Driver CPC Part 2 Case Studies Test Result

You will receive a letter at the test centre with the results. It will show the grade for the particular part of the case studies test that you took.

There will be a test pass reference number written on the letter. You need the number to book the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test. The pass letter and reference number is valid for two (2) years.

Note : It is important to pass the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test within the two year period. Failing to do so means you would need to pass the part 2 case studies test again.

What happens if You Fail the CPC Case Studies Tests?

Several things will happen if you fail the CPC case study test. A result letter provides feedback informing why you failed. You can go ahead and book another case studies test straight away. But, you must wait at least three (3) clear working days before you can resit the tests.

DVSA Cancelled Tests

It is uncommon but the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency may cancel the test at short notice. In this case, you can apply for a refund to cover your out-of-pocket expenses.

Everything you need to know about the HGV theory training & test

If you’re getting ready to take your LGV/HGV theory test, you’re likely to want to know everything you can about what’s expected from you. So, with this in mind, we’ve put together this extensive guide that provides you with everything you need to know to get a pass first time.

Getting through your HGV theory test is an important, initial step taken on the road to becoming a professional driver. Here we take an in-depth look at the entire process of the HGV theory side of driver qualification. This also forms part of the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) that all new drivers need to pass and then keep up to date to remain on the road.

Who Should take the HGV Theory Test ?

You should be taking your HGV theory test if:

  • You’re looking to get your PCV/HGV licence for the first time or moving from PCV to HGV or vice versa.
  • Or you have acquired rights* and you’re now looking to upgrade to Cat C/C+E/PCV licence.
  • Candidates that obtained their CAT C Licence before 10th September 2009, You’ll need to complete an initial cpc which includes Module 2 Theory cpc case studies test & module 4 practical demonstration.

* Acquired rights mean you have the entitlement for C1, which means you have grandfather rights & this means you will only need to complete a periodic CPC (5 Session of 7hrs) classroom-based training.

HGVT APP - HGV THEORY

What’s Included in the HGV Theory Test ?

The LGV / HGV theory test includes three separate parts:

  • Multiple-choice questions
  • A Hazard Perception Test
  • The CPC Case Study

MULTIPLE CHOICE

What’s included in the multiple-choice questions.

The multiple-choice element of the test involves a total of 100 questions. Module 1 is made up of these questions and the hazard perception test.

What Topics are Covered in the Theory Test?

The subjects covered in the multiple-choice part of the HGV theory test have been chosen to test the applicant’s overall knowledge of being an HGV driver.

Topics you’ll encounter will include, but are not limited to:

  • General traffic laws, including signage and speed.
  • Rules regarding working hours and necessary rest periods.
  • How to obtain and maintain proper documentation.
  • The responsibility drivers have for their cargo.
  • The proper techniques used for loading/unloading vehicles.
  • Sharing the road with other drivers.

It’s important to know that this is just a partial list of the topics that might come upon in your HGV theory test.

What’s the pass mark?

Out of the 100 marks available, you’ll have to attain 85 in order to get a pass. Both the multiple-choice and hazard perception tests are carried out on screen.

How Much Time Will I Have to Complete My HGV Theory Test ?

In terms of duration, you’ll have a total of 2 hours, with 1 hour 15 minutes for the multiple-choice questions and 45 minutes allotted for the hazard perception test.

What Happens Once I’ve Passed?

As soon as you’ve passed, you’ll be given your pass certificate, which contains the pass numbers for both the multiple-choice and hazard perception tests.

What Happens if I Fail My HGV Theory Test ?

If you’re not quite ready or simply having an off-day, you shouldn’t be too downhearted if you fail, as you can retake your HGV theory test. Simply get in touch and we’ll get you booked for your next test when you’re ready.

HAZARD PERCEPTION

What’s included in the hazard perception test.

The next part of the HGV theory test is the Hazard Perception element, which assesses your ability to spot and react to potential dangers you may encounter on the road. As mentioned before, the test is taken on-screen.

During your hazard perception test, you’ll be presented with 19 separate video clips, with each one lasting roughly 60 seconds. Each video is shown from the perspective of the driver, with a variety of hazards arising, which might cause you to take immediate action. These are specially designed CGI videos ( DVSA revision material ).

They include:

  • Emergency vehicles approaching with flashing lights.
  • Parked vehicles on one side of the road.
  • A pedestrian suddenly appearing from between two vehicles to cross the road.
  • Children playing by the side of the road with the potential to step out into.
  • Cyclists who aren’t clearly indicating their intentions.
  • Traffic restrictions such as traffic lights or speed bumps.
  • Poor visibility caused by fog or other inclement weather conditions.
  • Hazardous driving conditions involving wet or icy roads.

Anything that may cause you to alter your speed or take evasive action would be deemed as a hazard and you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled. This is not an exhaustive list, but it gives you a very good idea about what to expect.

What is the Pass Mark?

There are 100 possible marks available during the hazard test and you’ll be expected to score at least 67 to pass. Out of the 19, 18 of the videos will feature one scorable hazard, whilst one – and you’re not told which one – will feature two. Each scorable hazard will be worth up to 5 points, with the amount awarded dependent on the amount of time taken to notice the danger. This is why the clip with two hazards in it is so important.

How Do I Actually Take Hazard Perception Test?

As each clip plays out, you’ll have your hand on the mouse button and you should click each time you see something that you deem as a developing hazard. When you click is when you’re saying to the examiner that you would take action e.g. change your road position or change speed.

HGVT APP - HGV THEORY

CPC CASE STUDY

What are cpc case studies.

If you’re taking your initial CPC the first step would be the CPC Case Studies test. This particular element can be started as soon as you’ve got your provisional licence, meaning that you don’t have to complete the rest of the CPC qualification or the HGV theory test before you do so.

The actual test is comprised of 7 case studies which you view one by one on a computer. You’ll be given 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete the test, with each 6-8 multiple choice questions being asked about each of the 7 case studies.

What’s the Pass Mark for the CPC Case Studies?

The pass mark required for the CPC Case Studies element is 40 out of 50.

When Do I Get told Whether I’ve Passed?

The good news is that you’ll get told on the day whether you’ve passed or failed. If you pass, you’ll get a letter that’s valid for two years. You’ll need to complete your HGV theory test and the CPC part 4 practical demonstration test during that time. If you don’t, you’ll have to take this part again.

What Happens if I Fail the CPC Case Studies Test?

If you fail, your results letter will detail which parts of the test you failed and why. You won’t have to wait long to take the test again though, as you can re-book immediately and take it again after 3 clear working days.

Medical Requirements of the HGV Theory Test

In order to be considered for your HGV theory test, you need to first take an HGV medical test. This isn’t a drug test, rather it is to determine whether you’re physically fit enough to drive a lorry. When applying for your provisional licence, you need to make sure that you attach the medical report to your application to the DVLA.

This is an important step, as you won’t be able to take your HGV theory test without your provisional licence being approved.

Preparing for Your HGV Theory Test

We believe that the best way to ensure that you’re fully prepared for your HGV theory test is to make sure you get plenty of practice in beforehand. You can either prepare by yourself or utilise our software and training, which we absolutely know works. Some 92% of our students pass their theory test at the first time of asking an that’s because we concentrate on effective preparation techniques.

‘Practice makes perfect’ is a well-used phrase and it certainly applies to the HGV theory test. We encourage all of our students to practice, practice and practice again, as it breeds familiarity and offers the best possible chance of passing the real thing when it comes around.

Practice helps in a variety of ways:

  • Familiarity – As we just mentioned, practice breeds familiarity, not just with the subject matter, but also with how the information is presented during the test itself.
  • Repetition – Retaining information is often best achieved through repetition. It’s how a young child first learns to speak and once learnt, it’s often learnt forever. Your HGV theory test prep should apply the same principle of repetition for best results.
  • Confidence – Knowing that you’re getting progressively better helps to build confidence and a confident student who knows all the answers is unlikely to fail.

Trainee HGV drivers who sign up with HGVT are provided with state-of-the-art software that allows them to practice HGV theory test content as often as they like. Accessible via PC or smartphone, you can get in the practice you need wherever you are and whatever the time of day.

BOOKING THEORY TESTS

The Theory consists of three modules – multiple-choice, hazard perception and the CPC case studies test.

You have to book all three modules separately, but you can take them on the same day. It doesn’t matter which one you take first.

What is the cost?

TEST MODULE COST

Take the part 2 case studies test at the same time as the theory and hazard perception. Doing this will mean you can get your driver CPC as soon as you've passed the practical. You can then start work straight away!

You must take one of the following forms of ID to the test centre:

  • A Great Britain photocard driving licence
  • A Northern Ireland photocard driving licence and paper counterpart
  • A EU photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart, if you have one)
  • If you don’t have a photocard driving licence, take your paper licence and a valid passport.

You must pass the module 1a multiple-choice theory and module 1b hazard perception test before you can start your practical training

CPC for new professional lorry, bus and coach drivers

If you want to drive professionally you need an initial Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification. You’ll get a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) when you qualify. You must keep this with you when you’re driving professionally.

The Driver CPC initial qualification

The Driver CPC initial qualification has four parts:

  • part one - theory test (this includes two separate tests - multiple choice and hazard perception)
  • part two - case study test
  • part three - driving ability test
  • part four - practical demonstration test

You must pass all four parts to get your Driver CPC.

Book the theory test and case study test

You can book parts one and two online. When you book using this service, you only pay the cost of the test – there’s no extra booking fee.

  • Book, change, or cancel your theory test appointment

Book the driving ability test and practical demonstration test

You can also book parts three and four online. You can book online at the link below.

  • Book your practical driving test online

Order you take the tests in

You can take part one and part two in any order. You can also take part three and part four in any order. However, you must pass part one before you can take part three and pass part two before you can take part four.

Taking part one

Part one - you can take the multiple-choice and hazard perception tests in any order, on the same day or on two separate days. Remember, if you are taking both tests on the same day, make sure you leave some time between the two tests.

Receiving your DQC

A DQC will be issued automatically once you have passed the initial qualification. It will be sent to the address on your driving licence, so make sure that your details are up-to-date.

If the address is wrong and you are unable to get the DQC from the address on your licence, you will have to complete a DQC1 application form and apply for a duplicate licence at a cost of £25.

  • Keeping your driving licence up-to-date
  • Driver Qualification Card and Driver CPC

Driver CPC periodic training

You must do 35 hours of periodic training every five years to keep your Driver CPC.

You should not unnecessarily repeat the same periodic training module within a five-year rolling period. A range of different subjects should be covered over the driver’s 35 hours of periodic training. If unnecessary repetition of periodic training occurs, action may be taken against the driver and trainer.

When you don’t need Driver CPC

There are exceptions from the Driver CPC qualification if you drive certain vehicles. You can move in and out of an exemption, depending on the circumstances in which they are driving.

  • Exemptions and Driver CPC fees

Become a qualified heavy goods vehicle (HGV) or bus driver

Driver cpc part 1 test: theory.

You can book the part 1 theory test of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence ( CPC ) as soon as you’ve got your provisional licence .

The test is made up of 2 parts - multiple choice and hazard perception. You have to book both parts separately, but you can take them on the same day.

It does not matter which one you take first but you need to pass both within 2 years of each other to get your theory test certificate.

What to take to your test

You must bring one of the following:

  • a Great Britain photocard driving licence
  • a Northern Ireland photocard driving licence and paper counterpart
  • an EU photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart, if you have one)

If you do not have a photocard driving licence, bring your paper licence and a valid passport.

Your test will be cancelled and you’ll lose your fee if you do not bring the right documents.

Revision and practice

You can use books and software to revise for the theory test and take practice tests.

Multiple-choice questions

The multiple-choice questions in the theory test are based on 3 books:

  • The Highway Code
  • Know your traffic signs
  • The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles or The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Buses and Coaches

Study these to learn the rules and skills you’ll be tested on.

You can buy them from most high street and online book shops.

You can also study using:

  • the Official DVSA Theory Test kit for lorries online for your PC or Mac (this also includes help for the hazard perception test)
  • the Official DVSA Theory Test kit for buses and coaches online for your PC or Mac (this also includes help for the hazard perception test)
  • the Official DVSA Theory Test for Drivers of Large Vehicles book (the book is for both lorries and buses)
  • traffic sign flashcards (128 flash cards to help you learn traffic signs)

Take a free practice test

Take a practice theory test to check how much you’ve learnt. The questions are not used in the real test, but they are based on the same topics as the test.

Hazard perception test

To prepare for this test you can use the official guide to hazard perception.

You can buy the guide in these formats:

  • online for your PC or Mac
  • app for Apple phones and tablets
  • app for Android phones and tablets

How the test works

Multiple-choice questions part.

You have 1 hour and 55 minutes to answer 100 multiple-choice questions.

Before the test starts you’ll get:

  • instructions on how the test works
  • the chance to do a practice question to get used to the screens

A question and several possible answers appear on a screen. You have to select the right answer.

The pass mark for this part is 85 out of 100 questions.

Leaving a question

You can ‘flag’ questions that you want to come back to later.

Changing your answers

You can go back to any question to review and change your answer at any point.

When you’ve finished

You can finish the multiple-choice questions part when you’ve answered all of the questions. You do not have to use the full 1 hour and 55 minutes.

Hazard perception part

Before you start the hazard perception test, you’ll be shown a video about how it works .

You’ll then watch 19 video clips. The clips:

  • feature everyday road scenes
  • contain at least one ‘developing hazard’ - but one of the clips features 2 developing hazards

You get points for spotting the developing hazards as soon as they start to happen.

What a ‘developing hazard’ is

A developing hazard is something that would cause you to take action, like changing speed or direction.

A car is parked at the side of the road and is not doing anything. It would not cause you to take action, so it’s not a developing hazard.

When you get closer, the car’s right-hand indicator starts to flash and it starts to move away. You’d need to slow down, so it’s now a developing hazard.

How the scoring works

You can score up to 5 points for each developing hazard.

To get a high score, click the mouse as soon as you see the hazard starting to develop.

You do not lose points if you click and get it wrong. However, you will not score anything if you click continuously or in a pattern.

You only get one attempt at each clip. You cannot review or change your responses.

The pass mark for this part is 67 out of 100.

Your test result

You’ll be given a letter at the test centre with the results for the part of the theory test you’ve just taken.

When you’ve passed both parts, you’ll be given your theory test certificate at the test centre. You’ll need your certificate when you book your Driver  CPC  part 3a and part 3b driving tests.

Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from when you passed the first part of the test.

You need to pass the Driver CPC part 3a and part 3b driving tests within 2 years, otherwise you’ll have to pass the part 1 theory test again.

If you fail the theory tests

You’ll get a results letter with feedback telling you why you’ve failed.

You can book another theory test straight away, but you cannot take it for another 3 clear working days.

Cancelled tests

You can apply for a refund of out-of-pocket expenses if the DVSA cancels your test at short notice.

Case Study: Book my show App redesign 2023

Sasidharan

This case study is about my redesign of the BookMyShow app, where I crafted a user-friendly experience that reflects both functionality and style. 65+ screens was designed for this project.

Book my show ✌

BookMyShow, the biggest online ticketing platform in India, spans five countries and nearly 60 cities. Their business model is a standout example—they earn through internet handling or convenience fees .

It’s like a service charge for the ease of booking tickets online, saving you from the hassle of queuing up at a ticket centre.

Why Book my show?

In the vibrant landscape of online entertainment ticketing, the redesign of BookMyShow emerges as a strategic imperative, providing a host of advantages to stay ahead amidst fierce competitors.

At the forefront is the commitment to an enhanced user experience—a redesign promises a contemporary and user-friendly interface, fostering seamless navigation and heightened overall satisfaction for users engaging with the platform.

The redesign of BookMyShow is not merely a visual transformation; it’s a strategic evolution, ensuring the platform remains at the forefront of the dynamic entertainment ticketing industry.

📌The process

The moment that prompted my decision to redesign BookMyShow occurred when I personally experienced frustration while frequently using the platform to book movie tickets.

Numerous UX issues surfaced during my interactions, and after discussing these concerns with fellow users, I realized the need for a redesign. Importantly, the redesign wasn’t merely cosmetic ; it delved deep into functional aspects, aiming to create a seamless experience for users.

The process was simple and straightforward :

  • Heuristic evaluation
  • Secondary research
  • User interview
  • Aggregated empathy mapping
  • Affinity mapping
  • User story — problem statement — Hypothesis statement
  • Low-fidelity wire framing
  • High-fidelity wire framing
  • Mockup design

📌Quick research summary

I interviewed five potential users, as I could only spare time with that many individuals in their busy day-to-day lives. The insights gathered were as follows:

  • Parking facilities emerged as a vital user concern throughout the process.

2. Users expressed difficulty finding theatre reviews and the inability to review their experience afterward.

3. Additionally, there is a need to check theatre distance in a separate app or browser before booking.

4. The platform lacked proper mention of mobile ticket details or box office collection information.

Empathy mapping delves into users’ emotions and behaviors, providing a nuanced understanding.

Affinity mapping organized this information, highlighting common themes and facilitating prioritization. This collaborative process enables targeted solutions to address the most impactful pain points, enhancing overall user satisfaction.

📌Heuristic evaluation

The preparation for the heuristic evaluation is crucial for this project. I have initially established a rating scale and severity ranking for the heuristic evaluation.

Scoping the heuristic analysis

Parameters have been set to examine only the most crucial areas of the site. The limited scope has the capacity to focus on specific user flows and functionalities, such as logging in/registering, searching and browsing, booking a movie (detail pages), ticket place selection, checkout, post-checkout, and post-UX.

Tester Demographics

Sasidharan(22)-ux designer.

• Self-Reported Familiarity Scale: [0–5]-5

• Technology Experience: Familiar with technology and Invest most of the time in technological touch points

• Task-Specific Familiarity Ratings: [0–5]-5

• Frequency of Use: Weekly once

• Experience Level Categories: (usage Patterns)—Expert

• Task Completion Time: 1 minute and 10 seconds (approximate)

The problem

Before defining the problem, I designed three personas to represent all user categories.

Alongside the personas, I created user stories, acceptance criteria, problem and hypothesis statements, and a journey map. Additionally, I conducted a competitive analysis and audit, concluding with an analysis of competitors’ user interfaces.

Metrics to consider

Net Promoter Score (NPS) is very crucial to creating external triggers and spotlights for the application and can gain more organic users.

Daily/Monthly Active Users (DAU/MAU) can be used to evaluate user activity, which can provide insights to test and develop the user experience.

The framework is straightforward, and the tools I employed opened up numerous avenues for implementing my creative and user-friendly designs. I initiated the design process with a rough prototype using the Marvel app , allowing for quick visualization and iteration.

Subsequently, I utilized Figma to meticulously design screens, ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing interface. Protopie was then employed to bring the designs to life, creating a functional prototype that facilitated a more dynamic and interactive user experience.

This multi-tool approach enhanced the efficiency of the design workflow, from initial ideation to the development of a fully functional prototype.

Mockups and design rationale

Initially, I sketched functional-level designs on paper wireframes. After finalizing the functional design, I proceeded to create low-fidelity designs. The implementation of cosmetic changes took place during the development of high-fidelity designs. To maintain consistency, I created components and a small sticker sheet.

I would like to explain the flow with a possible scenario for a user. Sanjay is a 24-year-old IT professional who wants to book two tickets for the newly released movie ‘Oppenheimer.’ Let’s discuss Sanjay’s user experience while using the application.”

Enter: Onboarding

Sanjay downloaded BookMyShow from the App Store and opened the app. He is prompted to go through the onboarding process. He can either provide his mobile number or sign in using email, Apple ID , or even proceed as a guest.

The onboarding process of the current UI has no major usability or cosmetic issues. However, I have planned to reskin the UI , incorporating both cosmetic and usability changes to enhance the overall user experience.

  • The CTA is enabled only if the input matches the condition
  • If the user wishes to use Google Sign In or Apple Sign In or sign in as a guest, they are prompted to grant location access.
  • Unlike the current UX of BookMyShow, introducing a location access popup is crucial for clearly informing the user about this critical permission request.
  • If the user declines, they are directed to a separate screen explaining why location is essential for the application to operate. The user can choose to grant access or manually enter details if they are out of town or away from their desired location.
Sanjay entered the application, granting access to his location. Subsequently, he arrived at the home screen of the application.

Select movie

Sanjay’s desired movie is ‘Oppenheimer.’ He can either search for the movie or use language and filter chips to narrow down the options and select his desired movie.

The current UI has major usability issues and some cosmetic flaws , the resolution of which would significantly enhance the user experience. The redesigned version was created with these issues in mind.

Sanjay used the search function to select the ‘Oppenheimer’ card for booking tickets.

Select the theatre and Time

Sanjay opted to select Vetri Cinemas after reviewing the theatre ratings, and he felt confident in his choice. He then chose the 9 pm show and selected two seats.

The current UI faces imperative usability issues , particularly the absence of location information. Users struggle to select a theatre without details on travel time, cleanliness, air conditioning, and reviews.

Additionally, crucial details like mobile ticket availability and parking are unclear. Filters, a minor usability concern , may go unnoticed and unused. Cosmetically, the tightly packed modal with a black overlay appears clumsy.

Content is revealed only after a click, causing potential user confusion. There is a major usability concern with vehicle illustrations, which may be misconstrued as parking compulsions.

A solution involves providing details on distance, time to reach the theatre, and important facilities. Enabling users to add reviews fosters social proof and validation while avoiding confusing illustrations to minimize user confusion.

The current UI presents several issues. Firstly, the displayed amount of $381.56 for the Pay section does not include taxes. This might mislead users into thinking it is the final payment amount, leading to potential confusion during checkout. This is a critical usability issue.

Secondly, the Bestseller option creates a sense of urgency by promoting fast seat selection. This can make users feel pressured and anxious about choosing their seating plan quickly. This approach may be considered a dark UI pattern , contributing to a minor usability problem.

Furthermore, the random selection of bestsellers raises concerns. The Edit Icon for adjusting the number of seats is small and not easily accessible. This increases the likelihood of users accidentally selecting the wrong number of seats and experiencing frustration. Users might assume they need to navigate back to reselect the number of seats, causing a significant disruption in the flow .

To address this, allowing users to choose more or fewer seats without starting the selection process anew could enhance the user experience. Additionally, incorporating a feature that enables users to share their selected seat map on platforms like WhatsApp would facilitate communication and seat confirmation .

User can change the show timing by clicking the time button at the top which opens a modal.

Sanjay selected seats and proceeded to the next steps.

Way to pay (exit)

After Sanjay selects his seats, he is directed to the terms and conditions page. Following that, a screen providing information on parking booking appears, featuring options to accept or skip the action. Having chosen a two-wheeler parking spot, Sanjay then proceeds to select snacks. Opting for popcorn, he advances to the payment step.

The current UI faces several issues, with one critical problem being the placement of buttons. Previously, they were positioned within the thumb zone at the bottom, but the skip button is notably smaller and placed in a hard-to-reach area . In the snacks card section, there is a significant problem—both the heading copy and the body copy are identical, which seems redundant. To enhance the user experience, the body copy could provide details about flavors or available variants.

Another imperative issue arises with the touchpoint of the Call to Action (CTA) button, which is dangerously close to the add button, raising the possibility of items being added without user consent due to the small size of the button. Additionally, the total prices for the selected snacks are not displayed, and the items are not confirmed yet. It is crucial to include an order summary for users to double-check their selections and verify the amount they are willing to pay before proceeding.

Redesigning the UI with these issues in mind would be highly beneficial. Based on research, addressing a major prioritised pain point like booking a parking slot could significantly improve the user experience, particularly in metro cities.

However, this effort requires close cooperation among theatres . Users should also have the option to skip the parking screen and navigate directly to the snack screen, which is designed to be clean and minimal. Users can then confirm their snack choices after reviewing the cart.

Payment gateway

After selecting seats, parking, and snacks, Sanjay is then directed to the payment screen and finished the task.

The current UI presents several imperative issues. Users often prefer booking in advance on BookMyShow to avoid queues, but there’s a lack of clear explanation about the mobile ticket or box office collection in the previous flow. Springing the M-ticket or box office collection on users unexpectedly may lead to confusion and a higher drop rate . It is crucial to educate users beforehand about these options.

Additionally, there’s an issue with the pre-selection of “Book A Smile” without user consent . While some users may be okay with it, others may not, and it should be entirely up to the users.

The pay button lacks consistency with the previous flow and is too small. It needs to be standardized for a smoother user experience. Furthermore, promotions are not readily available on the main screen, leading to additional steps to apply for available offers. In the redesigned version, users should be able to apply offers more efficiently through an enhanced pattern, perhaps by using chips for sorting.

Contributions to “Book A Smile” should be allowed for users to select or unselect by clicking the radio button. This ensures that users have control over their choices.

To improve the user experience, it’s essential to address these issues and create a more user-friendly interface.

Social recognition (extend)

After booking the tickets, Sanjay decided to share his excitement by posting a story on social media platforms such like Instagram.

The current flow seems impractical and frustrating for users. Those who book tickets through BookMyShow may wish to share their experiences on social media.

However, the app only permits sharing in the form of a text file. Consequently, users resort to taking screenshots of their tickets and concealing the QR code with stickers.

Unfortunately, BookMyShow does not allow users to directly share on Instagram. In the redesigned version, users can now seamlessly share their booking stories on Instagram and WhatsApp, omitting the QR code.

This not only enhances the user experience but also serves as a promotional tool, potentially generating external triggers.

The change in main navigation

I have streamlined the main navigation of BookMyShow from four tabs to three. This decision is grounded in research insights revealing that users engage with BookMyShow in a purpose-driven manner.

They typically arrive with a pre-determined choice of movie or event and use the platform primarily for ticket bookings. Introducing fewer tabs—Home, Bookings, and Profile—minimizes complexity and ensures a straightforward and simple process to reach ticket bookings.

This approach prevents users from getting lost in excessive content and complexity.

Usability study

After completing the design, I exposed the prototype to potential users and carefully observed their feedback. Practical questions arose, such as:

  • Can we exclusively share the seat map on WhatsApp?
  • If we are a group of six intending to book one car and one bike, how does the process work?
  • How can we post reviews about the theater?

Addressing these concerns, I refined the prototype to accommodate these practical scenarios. The overall response was positive. Sharing tickets on social media not only facilitates a broader audience reach but also serves as a valuable metric for Net Promoter Score data.

The overall experience was great and informative. Using tools like Figma and ProtoPie was helpful, and I explored ProtoPie’s condition validation and other features as well.

The research was conducted with a neutral mindset, avoiding biases and ignorance. I thoroughly enjoyed delving into the capabilities of Figma and ProtoPie, enhancing my proficiency in these tools. Additionally, I took the opportunity to explore and implement ProtoPie’s condition validation and other advanced features.

The research process was characterized by a commitment to neutrality, ensuring the avoidance of biases and ignorance. Overall, the experience was enriching and contributed significantly to my knowledge and skill development.

The thoughtful and comprehensive analysis has provided valuable insights and a solid foundation for future considerations. I appreciate the thorough examination of the data, contributing to a well-rounded understanding of the user experience and solving user pain points.”

Thanks for your time!
