8 Safe Free Software Download Sites for Windows

Plus, how to check if a site is safe

There’s a lot of free Windows software download sites, but are they safe? Every time you download something, there’s a possibility that you’re downloading malware or viruses . Sure, you’ve got the best antivirus app, but there’s no sense making it do work that it doesn’t have to do. 

In this article, we’ll talk about how you can check whether a download is safe and we’ll also mention a couple of our favorite sites to download free software for Windows.

Are Free Software Download Sites Safe?

There are only two ways to know if a download site is safe. You can check its reputation and you test its downloads yourself.

There are businesses that rank how safe sites are. One of the most popular sites for this is WOT or Web of Trust . WOT rates sites based on community ratings, reviews, and their own machine learning algorithms. There are WOT plugins for Chrome, Firefox , and Opera browsers. If you have the plugin installed, you can check the download site.

You can also check the site before you go to it. Go to Virus Total and enter the web address of the site. It’ll check with a bunch of other sites that track reputations and viruses and lets you know if the site is safe.

That does not mean that what you download from the site has no malware or viruses. There are a couple of ways to test the download.

• Use a sandboxed web browser like Sandboxie to download it. In the sandboxed web browser, go to Virus Total and submit the download for testing.
• Download the program inside a virtual machine and test it there.

Safe And Free Software Download Sites for Windows

To compile this list, we researched the sites on WOT, VirusTotal, Norton Safe Web , URLVoid , and ScanURL . At the time of writing this, none of the download sites showed any issues on the website checkers.

On the web since 2004 and Alexa-ranked at 625, FileHippo is solid. FileHippo states that they hand-pick the software, and test it for malware and viruses. They also don’t allow software that bundles other software into it or browser toolbars. FileHippo currently has over 40,000 program versions listed.

Be careful if you do a web search for FileHippo. There are a lot of sites out there with similar names and URLs.

Nirsoft is a freeware utility site that was created and currently run by a guy named Nir Sofer. He’s single-handedly written all of the software utilities that you see on the site.

Each utility is completely free and usually very tiny in size. That’s because each utility is designed to perform one task and one task only. For example, some of the most popular utilities on the site are the password viewers, which will show you passwords stored on your computer, in your browser, etc.

More than just a free software download site, Ninite is also a package management system. Using it as a package management system, Ninite can be used to automate the installation of your favorite software and keep it up to date, with just one click. This is likely the safest site on the list.

The number of free apps is limited. It does cover most of the software that you’d install first on a new computer though. Chrome, Firefox, 7-zip , iTunes, VLC , Malwarebytes are amongst the free downloads Ninite can provide and manage.

Even older than FileHippo, Softpedia has been a software download staple since 2001. Softpedia hosts a lot of free downloads on their own physical servers. That means they have even more to gain from making sure the apps are safe. That’s a lot of work when they have over 1.2 million apps, drivers, and games available.

Download Crew

Offering some of the most well-known Windows freeware in an easy to read, easy to search site, Download Crew should be on your list. Download Crew has been around for over 10 years, boasts almost 300,000 members, and over 33 million downloads.

Its sister site is Download Crew Store , where you can get deeply discounted proprietary software. Between the two you’ll get all you need as cheaply as possible.

When it comes to free software download sites, it’s hard to tell them apart. They all do the same thing. They all offer downloads. What might set File Horse apart is that they also keep archives of previous versions of the software.

So if an update to your favorite app makes an unwanted change, you could download the older version here and roll it back. File Horse also curates a directory of free cloud apps.

Major Geeks

Don’t let the early-2000’s design fool you. Major Geeks is a legitimate free software download site. Founded in 2001, Major Geeks built a reputation by being one of the first to test all the software they offer.

First, they check the reputation of the company and software, then they scan it with several virus scanners , including VirusTotal. If it makes it past that, Major Geeks actually installs the software on their own VMWare Workstation to test the functionality. If it meets their standards, then the software gets listed. This thoroughness warrants their military-style theme.

Microsoft Store

Partly a website and partly an app that’s probably already on your computer, Microsoft Store does have a lot of good freeware. Being Microsoft, there’s already a reputation in place and you’d like to think they’re hosting safe software.

Some of them are from the big names you already know, like Netflix , Apple, and, of course, Microsoft. Some are made by smaller development teams but can be very useful. Not all apps are free. There are thousands that are and it’s easy to find them. Just search on ‘free’.

Beyond that, you should also check out the great Sysinternals tools that used to be a separate site, but Microsoft purchased. The tools are still updated, but are geared more towards geeks.

Anymore Good Free Software Sites?

There are a few more good safe free software sites, but if you can’t find what you need on the sites above, then they’re not going to help much. Over time, you’ll get to know the sites you like that have the software you need.

Remember to always check the downloaded file with your antivirus app or through Virus Total. If possible, test the program installation in a virtual machine or sandboxed environment.

It's a mobile world, but we have not fully abandoned the  desktop . The real work (and a lot of the play) of computing requires a full personal computing system, and to get the most out of that, you need software.

Software can be expensive, but free programs have been a mainstay of the desktop experience for decades, and today's offerings are pretty powerful. Software developers can adopt an ad-based model, donation-ware to keep things afloat, or a shareware/freemium model that charges for extra features.

Something to always watch for: Crapware installers. To make ends meet, many creators of otherwise great free software, or the services that offer the programs for download, bundle in things you  don't  want. Worse, the installation routine obfuscates the steps, so you provide the unwanted program tacit permission to be installed. A pro tip: Only download desktop software from the maker of the software directly. It's not foolproof—after all, developers want to eat, too—but it helps.

Other Criteria:

• The software must be available directly from the developer/creator/original publisher.
• The software should (typically) have a Windows-based download—no browser extensions here, because we're not all on the same browser. However, we've included web-based apps that are as good, or better, than most downloadable programs.
• If the software is on a tiered sales model, the free version cannot be trial-ware. It has to have at least a free-for-life option.
• Preferably the program had an update in the last year or two.
• The program should have little or no advertising to support it.
• Software for productivity is what this list is about; there are plenty of other places to  find free PC games .

7 Websites to Find and Download Free and Open Source Software

Where can I download open source software?

I have been asked this question several times and I usually have the same answer. So, I thought instead of replying to individual emails, I would put a list of sources in an article for everyone to check out.

You can always find apps in the software center of your Linux distributions, the description typically specifies whether it is open source. You can also explore available software on Flathub and Snapcraft .

But apart from the usual options, if you are looking for interesting software to download and explore, there are various websites that list and host open-source software.

Some websites provide a way to effectively collaborate for open-source software development, but that is not our focus here. We will be focusing on web portals that host and distribute open-source projects.

1. SourceForge

SourceForge is one of the earliest portals to host and distribute open-source software. Over the years, SourceForge has become one of the premier resources for open-source projects.

The platform boasts hosting over thousands (could be close to a million or more) of projects and has millions of registered users. You can find featured open source projects on its homepage, along with the editor’s choice projects. In addition, you can go on exploring yourself, navigating throughout the site.

SourceForge provides stats on downloads along with other essential details (like license), so you can evaluate the project before wanting to try it out.

Registered members can also rate and review software, similar to what you see on the Play Store and App Store.

OSDN stands for Open Source Development Network. It provides several free-of-charge services for open-source software developers. These services include SVN/Git/Mercurial/Bazaar/CVS repositories, mailing lists, bug tracking system, bulletin board and forum, website hosting, release file download service, file archive, complete backup, shell environment, etc.

Over 55,000 projects use OSDN services. As an end-user, you can use OSDN for finding and downloading open-source software. The download page has a list of software categories you can browse through and download.

FossHub was founded in 2007 with the goal of becoming a “ reliable place for users who wish to download their favorite software titles and as a trustworthy partner for certain free projects ”.

It provides fast worldwide servers and optimized pages for good user experience and fast download speeds. They provide you with direct download links without needing to redirect to multiple pages.

The project page lists the total number of downloads. It also shows the supported operating systems. You can also rate and review the software, even if you are not a registered member. Overall, it is a pretty nice portal to look for a wide range of software.

4. FOSS Torrents

FOSS Torrents is a community-powered web portal that helps to list torrents for distributions, games, and software.

It is entirely dedicated to listing free and open-source projects. You can find screenshots of the software, key information regarding it, and torrents for various packages. Some torrents are officially submitted by the developers and some are unofficial torrents by the website to facilitate downloads.

If you prefer using torrents to download a software quickly, FOSS Torrents is your solution.

GitHub is slightly different from the two discussed above. GitHub is more focused on hosting source code and collaborating with the project development. But it is also extensively used for distributing software.

Projects can make their own web pages on GitHub and can provide a direct download using it. You can also find the latest releases of a software from the project’s release section.

You will have to navigate a bit to be able to download software packages, but it should not be a dealbreaker.

F-Droid is a platform to list and distribute free and open-source software for Android.

You can browse FOSS Android apps in various categories. You can also download the APK files directly from the website, but it is recommended to use the F-Droid client for installing the apps.

With the F-Droid client, your installed Android app will get updates similar to the Play Store. If you directly use the APK, it won’t get updates and thus will pose a security risk.

7. Softpedia

Softpedia is a popular platform where you can find a range of software listed for multiple platforms. It provides you with download stats, license information, a brief description of the software, and all the essential links to the software.

You can find a dedicated section for Linux , where you will stumble upon many open-source projects.

It does not necessarily host the files. But, you can initiate the download from the website, and occasionally, you get re-directed to the official download pages of the software.

I would like to mention Savannah from GNU for downloading free and open-source software here. It is an old-school website from FSF (Free Software Foundation) that I do not find very user-friendly. However, you can be sure to get 100 percent free and open-source software here.

Now, this list may not feature everything there is, and you might know of some other such websites that host and distribute open-source software. If so, please mention them in the comment section below.

Furthermore, AlternativeTo is a good place to find open-source alternative software recommendations. You get to know the key highlights of the software in a quick glance, which should save time. Slant is a similar option, but listing options in question/answer or pro/cons format.

GitHub is an online platform for developers to collaborate on code and publish their software. Lots of it is 100% free, and some of it is absolutely top-tier. However, because it's made for developers, it's not exactly user-friendly. Here's how to find your way around.

How to Find (Reputable!) Free Software

Searching for "free" apps on the internet can be perilous. Malware creators are just itching for you to click on a search result that leads to their malicious site (and they're pretty good at making them look attractive), and then tricking you into downloading a virus or trojan.

So, before you go and start downloading things from the internet, make sure you're protected with a reputable antivirus solution (ideally one with web browser integration that flags suspicious downloads before they reach your device).

Now you're ready to start searching.

Free, open source software for productivity (word processing, drawing, video editing, and design), gaming, and even entire operating systems can be found on GitHub, but it can be difficult to wade through the vast number of projects (stored in "repositories"), especially as many of them are developer tools that don't make much sense for regular users.

That's why it's much easier to use websites dedicated to curating lists of free software, than trying to browse GitHub directly. If you're on Windows, Ninite provides an installer for a collection of high-quality free apps that cover a lot of common PC tasks (so your search for free stuff may end there if you're after something specific).

If you know the category of the app you want, or know the name of a paid product, you can also punch it into AlternativeTo to get a list of similar software, and filter it to the free options. Every app on Alternative to has is ranked and reviewed, so you can stick to the ones that are in good standing with other users. Despite sites like AlternativeTo making it easy to find free software with a friendly interface, inevitably you'll run into a free app that is hosted on GitHub , and need to navigate its confusing interface.

How To Download Ready-To-Use Apps on GitHub

Once you've landed on the GitHub page for a free app or game, the next step is to determine whether a pre-packaged version is available. Software is published to GitHub as source code, and it cannot be run directly on your computer without taking a number of technical steps to build it, something regular users don't have the tools to accomplish. Some developers, however, do provide packaged code, either on GitHub, or on their own websites. You just have to find it!

To start your hunt for the fabled download link, scroll down the page for the GitHub project, and look for the README section (past the list of files and developer jargon). This is where the developer puts all the information users need to get started. Often, there's an obvious download link included here, so keep an eye out for the terms "download", "pre-packaged", "pre-built" and "binaries" (the terms developers commonly use to refer to ready-to-use apps).

Failing that, look for a link to the project or developers' website in the README and head there, as they may be hosting the binaries for their app themselves.

Finally, you can check the "Releases" section of the GitHub page for pre-built binaries. This is located in the sidebar to the right: Click on the bolded Releases heading, and then download a binary for your platform from there if one is supplied.

Free Stuff Shouldn't Come With Strings Attached

The adage "if it's too good to be true, it probably is" doesn't apply to free software, because it is often just as good as it looks. You just need to be careful about which software you trust to install on your devices.

While most free and open source software is made by honest, dedicated developers who just want to make the world better with free stuff, there are those who take advantage of this to try and push malicious software on unsuspecting users. If you have any doubts about downloading something, it pays to stop, think, and maybe check with a tech-savvy friend or family member before you continue.

AnyDownloader is an alternative video downloader you can check out, too. With AnyDownloader, you can easily download any video in MP4 format from popular sites like Dailymotion and Vimeo, but YouTube is not currently supported.

VLC Media Player is one of the best free media players . It's a program many users have already installed on their machines, and it negates the need for third-party apps.

If you already have this desktop app, you can instantly download online videos from sites like Vimeo and Dailymotion for free. Unfortunately, downloading YouTube videos isn't supported.

After launching VLC, go to Media > Open Network Stream in VLC. Paste the URL in the empty field under Please enter a network URL and click Play . Your video should start playing in VLC.

Then, go to Tools > Media Information . Copy everything in the Location field, paste that into a new web page, and you'll see the video in your browser. Click the ellipsis icon and select Download to get the video in MP4.

We're closing out our list with one final tip and software recommendation. When you have exhausted all other download possibilities, you can instead play the video, set it to full screen, and then screen record your device. Make sure you also enable system sound recording to record the video's audio.
