This paper has developed from one question – why is it that people in materially rich nations seem to engage so little with the tragedy of extreme poverty today? Exploring this question has raised a number of issues, the first of which is considered in this investigation, which is the inadequacy of research methods currently operating in this field. This investigation considers the capacity of Q Methodology to traverse the limitations of present approaches. It demonstrates that, whilst not a panacea for current researching woes, Q Methodology provides an incredibly versatile and robust framework for participants to explore their own opinions concerning extreme poverty while opening up these perspectives to statistical scrutiny and analysis. The Q Methodology investigation carried out herein produces some key insights. Amongst other things, it indicates that a key feature in the perspective of those most engagement with extreme poverty is believing extreme poverty to be unjust, underpinned by considering its existence to be terrible and its eradication to be possible.

This study is a qualitative study which intends on understanding why certain students chose to study social work at the University of Cape Town. It was conducted at the University of Cape Town under the Department of Social Development. It explored questions such as what influences the decisions of students to study Social Work, Identify socio-demographic background characteristics that influence student’s experiences in the BSW program. Data was gathered through an-depth interview with 4 social work students as a sample in a group setting. The data which was collected from the participants was analysed through Tesch’s framework, which involved eight (8) steps. To understand students’ motivations for enrolling in the BSW programme, the study used the qualitative research method. The research sample consisted out of four third year social work student from the University of Cape Town. To collect data the researcher in this study conducted a focus group with the study respondents. The findings of this study reveal that social work students at the University of Cape Town (UCT) chose to study social work, both for making change in their communities and for maintaining a career. The main recommendation in the study is that students need to be properly oriented on what is expected from them as they enrol. They need to be told what their role is and that of their lecturers and supervisors. In this study the main conclusion as to students’ motivations for choosing to study social work, is because they want to inspire positive change in people’s lives.
