Program Overview

The Ph.D. in Engineering Management is designed to prepare rising scholars and researchers to develop unique knowledge that expands the field of engineering management. Engineering management at GW is concerned with interactions among management, policy, and technology development; management for risk and resilience; and the management of design and operations for socio-technical systems.

Students work directly with a faculty advisor to formulate their research focus, write and publish their dissertation, as well as participate actively in professional and research-focused conferences in the field of engineering management and systems engineering.

The Ph.D. program is based on GW’s main campus in Washington, D.C. (Foggy Bottom), which lies in close proximity to a wide array of federal agencies and other organizations with significant engineering management challenges and interests. Faculty and doctoral students have built collaborative relationships that benefit from and support these organizations.

Admissions Requirements

  • If applicant has obtained a master’s degree, a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (on a scale of 4.0) is required.
  • If applicant has only obtained a bachelor’s degree, the minimum grade point average must be a 3.3 (on a scale of 4.0).

The Doctor of Engineering in Engineering Management is designed for practitioners who wish to apply the knowledge they gain in a technical management environment. Unlike a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), wherein research is focused on foundational work that is published, the D.Eng. requires solving a real-world problem using the latest engineering management concepts and tools. The program culminates in a praxis for use by practicing engineers to address a common concern or challenge.

Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, applied science, mathematics, computer science, information technology or related field from accredited institutions

A minimum graduate level GPA of 3.2

Note: GRE and GMAT scores are not required to complete the application packet, but can be submitted to strengthen the application.

College-level courses in calculus and statistics. Applicants who do not have adequate preparation in mathematics but are otherwise qualified for admission will be required to take an additional course.

Throughout the program, students engage in rigorous coursework and research, gaining a deep understanding of engineering principles and their application in a management context. Graduates are equipped with the skills to effectively lead engineering teams, oversee complex projects, implement innovative strategies, and shape the future of engineering management.

The degree requires completion of eight graduate-level courses (listed below) and a minimum of 24 credit hours of Praxis Research (EMSE 8199). During the research phase, the student writes and defends a research praxis on a topic related to Engineering Management. The topic is selected by the student and approved by the research advising committee.

EMSE 6025 Entrepreneurship and Technology:  Concepts and methods associated with starting an entrepreneurial venture: organization design, team building, protection of intellectual property, strategies for developing and marketing a technology product; financial, legal, and market valuation issues and methods for a start-up venture. (3 credit hours) 

EMSE 6030 Technological Forecasting and Management:  Concepts and methods for understanding the dynamics of technological change. Issues in technology assessment, technology transfer, and strategic management of technology. (3 credit hours) 

EMSE 6115 Uncertainty Analysis for Engineers:  Basics of probability theory and statistics, with a focus on engineering applications, particularly in the realm of systems. Topics include simulation, uncertainty analysis, central limit theorem, and systems examination and analysis. (3 credit hours)

EMSE 6767 Applied Data Analytics:  Applied and practical data analytics. High-level theory, with primary focus on practical application of a broad set of statistical techniques needed to support an empirical foundation for systems engineering and engineering management. A variety of practical visualization and statistical analysis techniques. Leveraging Minitab and Excel to examine raw data to arrive at insightful conclusions. (3 credit hours)

EMSE 6790 Logistics Planning:  Quantitative methods in model building for logistics systems, including organization, procurement, transportation, inventory, maintenance, and their interrelationships. Stresses applications. (3 credit hours)

EMSE 8030 Risk Management Process for the Engineering Manager:  Risk management process; individual and collaborative responsibilities of program and engineering managers; practical applications of risk-based planning and risk management tools essential to success of any program; communicating the process and its value in avoiding catastrophic outcomes. (3 credit hours) 

EMSE 8099 Quantitative Methods in Engineering Management:  Survey of quantitative research methods including overviews of mathematical programing, forecasting, simulation, and decision theory. (3 credit hours) 

EMSE 8100 The Praxis Proposal:  Overview of research methods. Aims and purpose of the praxis. Development of praxis research strategies, formulation and defense of a praxis proposal. Praxis proposal defense must be passed before the student is admitted to degree candidacy to undertake praxis work. Restricted to students who have completed all required coursework for the D.Eng. in the field of engineering management degree. (3 credit hours) 

EMSE 8199 Praxis Research:  Independent applied research in engineering management culminating in the final praxis report and final examination for the degree of Doctor of Engineering. May be repeated for credit. Restricted to students in the D.Eng. in the field of engineering management program. (24 credit hours) 

Classroom courses last 10 weeks each and meet on Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM—12:10 PM and afternoons from 1:00—4:10 PM (all times Eastern). All classes meet live online through synchronous distance learning technologies (Zoom). All classes are recorded and available for viewing within two hours of the lecture. This program is taught in a cohort format in which students take all courses in lockstep. Courses cannot be taken out of sequence, attendance at all class meetings is expected, and students must remain continuously enrolled. Leaves of absence are permitted only in the case of a medical or family emergency, or deployment to active military duty. Please see below for the dates of our upcoming cohort.

To proceed to the research phase, students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.2 in the eight classroom courses, and no grade below B-. Students are then registered for a minimum of 24 credit hours (ch) of EMSE 8199 Praxis Research: 3 ch in Fall 2025 (Session 2), 9 ch in Spring 2026, 3 ch in Summer 2026, and 9 ch in Fall 2026. Throughout the research phase, students develop the praxis under the guidance of a designated faculty advisor. Faculty research advisors are assigned by the program office and meet individually with students every two weeks.

Tuition is billed at $1650 per credit hour for the 2024-2025 year. A non-refundable tuition deposit of $995, which is applied to tuition in the first semester, is required when the student accepts admission.

  • Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, applied science, business, computer science, information technology, or a related field from accredited institutions.
  • Applicants with other majors are encouraged to apply. However, they may have to take EMSE 4197 as a prerequisite course if they have not completed two college-level calculus courses.
  • A minimum graduate-level GPA of 3.2.
  • Capacity for original scholarship.
  • TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or PTE scores are required of all applicants who are not citizens of countries where English is the official language.  Check our  International Students page  to learn about the SEAS English language requirements and exemption policy. Test scores may not be more than two years old.

Program Overview

The Ph.D. in Engineering Management is designed to prepare rising scholars and researchers to develop unique knowledge that expands the field of engineering management. Engineering management at GW is concerned with interactions among management, policy, and technology development; management for risk and resilience; and the management of design and operations for socio-technical systems.

Students work directly with a faculty advisor to formulate their research focus, write and publish their dissertation, as well as participate actively in professional and research-focused conferences in the field of engineering management and systems engineering.

The Ph.D. program is based on GW’s main campus in Washington, D.C. (Foggy Bottom), which lies in close proximity to a wide array of federal agencies and other organizations with significant engineering management challenges and interests. Faculty and doctoral students have built collaborative relationships that benefit from and support these organizations.

The Doctor of Engineering in Engineering Management is designed for practitioners who wish to apply the knowledge they gain in a technical management environment. Unlike a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), wherein research is focused on foundational work that is published, the D.Eng. requires solving a real-world problem using the latest engineering management concepts and tools. The program culminates in a praxis for use by practicing engineers to address a common concern or challenge.

The PhD in Engineering Management focuses on developing skills needed to conduct rigorous research in areas related to the improvement, design, and management of projects and programs within complex human-technological systems. Students take 10 courses before beginning a dissertation research project, including five core courses that establish a foundation of knowledge from which each student can explore their area of interest. Core courses are Engineering Supply Chain, Operations Research, Project Management, Strategic Economic Decision Making, and Seminar/Research Methods for Engineering Management. After the core is complete, a plan of study is developed in consultation with a research advisor that considers the dissertation research of the student. Whether you pursue your studies on campus or fully online, you will work regularly with your advisor, a content expert in your field of interest. You can be confident that you will have support throughout your educational journey.

Admissions requirements.

Candidates for the PhD in Engineering Management should possess a master’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related discipline. A cumulative GPA of at least a 3.5 (4.0 scale) will be required for admission. A GRE score* from the last five years, with a combined verbal and quantitative score of at least a 300 with a quantitative score in at least the top 40 th  percentile will be required for consideration.  Candidates below established GPA and GRE requirements will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Candidates whose primary language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English . Applicants must also have evidence of completion of a probability and statistics course with a grade of at least a “B” and be able to demonstrate competence in at least one structured programming language (R, Python, C++, etc.).

*The College of Engineering will consider waiving the GRE requirement based on progressive industry experience, academic performance, a recommendation from a research advisor, and an interview. Options for attending courses include fully in-class, fully online, as well as hybrid in-class and online to accommodate work and family. All lectures will be captured and available for online review. The program will capture all lecture-based presentations using the echo360 lecture capture system.

If you are interested in completing the program fully online, you will have an initial consultation with the Department Chair to discuss your goals and how an online approach could work for you, with particular attention to dissertation requirements. Once enrolled in program, you will be paired with a faculty advisor who will be a content expert in their field based on your research interests.

*International candidates will be required to attend in-class sessions in order to be in compliance with student visa requirements.

Program Goals & Philosophy

Goals/Principles

The goal of the program is to prepare graduates with the appropriate technical depth and breadth of knowledge so that they may be successful educators, researches, and practitioners in the management of complex human technological systems. The program will follow three principles in pursuit of this goal. In addition to passing the required coursework, students must also pass a comprehensive examination to demonstrate a mastery of Principles 1 and 2.

Principle 1: Provide a Solid Foundation and Depth in Engineering Management Theory and Practice

A solid fundamental understanding of a field is essential in order for students to be considered an expert in that field. This is true for Engineering Management as well. It is the fundamentals that a student will need to expand upon in order to contribute new knowledge to the field of engineering management. We place an emphasis on the fundamentals of the management of complex human technological systems and an emphasis on the modeling and analysis of such systems.

Principle 2: Provide Breadth Across Multiple Types of Human Technological Systems

Principles, tools, and fundamentals of engineering management have been rooted in engineering and manufacturing systems. These tools have also been successfully applied to other systems such as service and transportation/logistical systems. Today engineering managers can be increasingly found in banks, hospitals, amusement parks, airlines, and a variety of delivery agencies. On the surface, these industries appear different however; they all involve people, materials, information, equipment, energy, and capital. Therefore, the program will emphasize case studies and examples within the coursework that are applications in the following three areas: 

  • Engineering and Manufacturing Systems
  • Service Systems
  • Logistical Systems

Principle 3: Contribute to the body of Knowledge in Engineering Management

A requirement of any Doctorate of Philosophy Program in Engineering is the expectation that graduating students will contribute to the body of knowledge in their chosen field by conducting research. This will be demonstrated by graduating students successfully completing a doctoral dissertation. Students conducting dissertation research will be guided by a selected advisor and advisory committee. Students must pass a dissertation approval examination in order to ensure they are prepared to conduct research. Upon the successful completion of research, graduating students will document the research results in a dissertation. Dissertations will be defended in front of advisory committees.

The PhD program requires three years of full-time graduate study, at least two years of which must be at Stanford. Typically, however, students take four to five years after entering the program to complete all PhD requirements. The University requires a minimum of 135 units for a PhD, up to 45 units of which may be transferred from another graduate program, or used toward a master's degree at Stanford.

Oral examination

Doctoral students are required to take a number of courses, both to pass a qualifying exam in one of these areas, and to complete a dissertation based on research which must make an original contribution to knowledge. The PhD is generally organized around the expectation that the student acquires a certain breadth across all areas of the department, and depth in one area.

The current areas are: Computational Social Science Decision and Risk Analysis Operations Research Organizations, Technology and Entrepreneurship Policy and Strategy Quantitative Finance

Each student admitted to the PhD program must satisfy a breadth requirement.

All first year students are required to attend and participate in MS&E 302 Fundamental Concepts in Management Science and Engineering, which will meet in the Autumn Quarter.

Each course session will be devoted to a specific MS&E PhD research area. At a given session, several advanced PhD students in that area will make carefully prepared presentations designed for first-year doctoral students regardless of area. The presentations will be devoted to: (a) illuminating how people in the area being explored that day think about and approach problems, and (b) illustrating what can and cannot be done when addressing problems by deploying the knowledge, perspectives, and skills acquired by those who specialize in the area in question.

Faculty in the focal area of the week will comment on the student presentations. The rest of the session will be devoted to questions posed and comments made by the first-year PhD students.

During the last two weeks of the quarter groups of first year students will make presentations on how they would approach a problem drawing on two or more of the perspectives to which they have been exposed earlier in the class.

Attendance is mandatory and performance will be assessed on the basis of the quality of the students’ presentations and class participation.

Each student admitted to the PhD program must pass an area qualification procedure. The purpose of the qualification procedure is to assess the student’s command of the field and to evaluate his or her potential to complete a high-quality dissertation in a timely manner. The student must complete specified course work in one of the areas of the department. The qualification decision is based on the student’s coursework and grade point average (GPA), on the one or two preliminary papers prepared by the student with close guidance from two faculty members, at least one of whom must be an MS&E faculty member, the student’s performance in an area examination or defense of the written paper(s), and an overall assessment by the faculty of the student's ability to conduct high-quality PhD research. Considering this evidence, the department faculty will vote on advancing the student to candidacy in the department at large.

The qualification procedure is based on depth in an area of the student’s choice and preparation for dissertation research. The qualification process must be completed by the end of the month of May in the student’s second year of graduate study in the department. The performance of all doctoral students will be reviewed every year at a department faculty meeting at the end of May or beginning of June. PhD qualification decisions will be made at that time and individual feedback will be provided.

The PhD qualification requirements comprise the following elements:

Courses and GPA: Students must complete the depth requirements of one of the areas of the MS&E department. All courses used to satisfy depth requirements must be taken for a letter grade, if the letter-graded option is available. Course substitutions may be approved by the doctoral program advisor or the MS&E dissertation advisor on the candidacy form or on a request for graduate course substitution form. A student must maintain a GPA of at least 3.4 in the set of all courses taken by the student within the department. The GPA will be computed on the basis of the nominal number of units for which each course is offered.

Paper(s): A student may choose between two options. The first option involves one paper supervised by a primary faculty advisor and a second faculty reader. This paper should be written in two quarters. The second option involves two shorter sequential tutorials, with two different faculty advisors. Each tutorial should be completed in one quarter. In both options, the student chooses the faculty advisor(s)/reader with the faculty members’ consent. There must be two faculty members, at least one of whom must be an MS&E faculty member, supervising and evaluating this requirement for advancement to candidacy. The paper/tutorials must be completed before the Spring Quarter of a student’s second year of graduate study in the department if the student’s qualifying exam is during the Spring Quarter, and before the end of May of that year otherwise.

Area qualification: In addition, during the second year, a student must pass an examination in one of the areas of the MS&E department, or defense of the written paper(s). The student chooses the area/program in which to take the examination. This area examination will be written, oral, or both at the discretion of the area faculty administering the exam. Most areas offer the qualifying exam only once per year, which may be early in the second year.

Each doctoral student’s progress is reviewed annually by the MS&E faculty. Typically, this occurs at a faculty meeting at the end of Spring Quarter, and appropriate email notifications are sent over the summer to the students and their advisors. It shall be the responsibility of the student to initiate each required step in completing the PhD program. To maintain good standing in the PhD program,

First year students must: 1. Complete 30 units, including MS&E 302 and doctoral courses taught by faculty in their research area; 2. Develop relationships with faculty members who can potentially serve as dissertation advisor or reading committee member. A faculty member is more likely to accept the responsibility of supervising the research of a student whom he or she knows fairly well than a student whose abilities, initiative, and originality the faculty member knows less. It is recommended that students participate in research rotations with MS&E and related faculty to facilitate the development of these relationships.

Second year students must: 1. Complete at least two one-quarter research rotations or tutorials, or one two-quarter research rotation, tutorial, or research paper, continuing to develop relationships with faculty members who might serve as dissertation advisor or reading committee member; 2. Pass an area qualifying exam or defense of the written paper(s); 3. Submit a candidacy form signed by at least one MS&E faculty member with whom they have or will complete research rotations, tutorials, or papers, and listing the course requirements agreed upon by both the student and the program advisor; 4. Complete 30 units, including most, if not all, of the required courses listed on the candidacy form; 5. Be advanced to candidacy by the faculty.

Third year students must: 1. Submit a progress form listing the dissertation topic and signed by the dissertation advisor (if the dissertation advisor is not an MS&E faculty member, the form must also be signed by an MS&E faculty member who agrees to be on the student's reading committee, as well as the student's point of contact within the department); 2. Complete 30 units, including any remaining depth courses.

Fourth year students must: 1. Select a reading committee (a dissertation advisor and two readers) with at least one member from the student's major department, and submit the reading committee form signed by each member on the reading committee; 2. Make satisfactory progress on their dissertation as determined by their dissertation advisor; 3. If the student has not transferred any previous graduate units to Stanford, complete 30 dissertation units.

Students beyond their fourth year must make satisfactory progress on their dissertation as determined by their dissertation advisor and approved by the faculty. Indeed, the dissertation advisor will have to present the case to (and seek approval for good standing of the student from) the faculty in the annual faculty meeting for student review. It should be noted that each student inherently has to pass the oral examination (see below) and submit their dissertation before their candidacy expires.

Oral Examination

As administered in this department, the University oral examination is a defense of the dissertation; however, the candidate should be prepared to answer any question raised by any members of the Academic Council who choose to be present. The examining committee consists of the three members of the reading committee as well as a fourth faculty member and an orals chair. The chair must be an Academic Council member and may not be affiliated with either the Department of Management Science and Engineering nor any department in which the student's adviser has a regular appointment; emeriti professors are eligible to serve as an orals chair. It is the responsibility of the student's adviser to find an appropriate orals chair. The University oral examination may be scheduled after the dissertation reading committee has given tentative approval to the dissertation.

The student must be enrolled in the quarter of their oral examination. Students should schedule three hours for the oral examination, which usually consists of a 45-minute public presentation, followed by closed-session questioning of the examinee by the committee, and committee deliberation. The student needs to reserve a room, and meet with the student services manager to complete the oral examination schedule and pick up other paper work. This paperwork, along with an abstract, needs to be delivered to the orals chair at least one week prior to the oral examination.

Many industries are reporting significant workforce shortages of trained technical management personnel with a doctoral degree and experience in leading engineering organizations. Moreover, the shortage is growing each year with increasing demand in new engineering-related corporations and the annual departure of large cohorts of existing professionals who are reaching retirement age. This program is in response to that need. The PhD in Engineering Management degree is for new master's degree graduates and non-traditional students (i.e., experienced personnel) who desire to advance in their careers by gaining leadership skills in the industries related directly and indirectly to engineering and technology.

The PhD in Engineering Management is for current professionals or those with experience in the field of engineering design, manufacturing and service. Students will pursue a deep proficiency in this area using an interdisciplinary methodology, cutting-edge courses, and dynamic faculty. Graduates will contribute significantly to the Engineering Management field through the creation of new knowledge and ideas.

As your PhD progresses, you will move through a series of progression points and review stages by your academic supervisor. This ensures that you are engaged in a process of research that will lead to the production of a high-quality Thesis and/or publications and that you are on track to complete this in the time available. Following submission of your PhD Thesis or accepted three academic journal articles, you will have an oral presentation assessed by an external expert in your field.

The following rates are in effect for the 2024-2025 academic year, beginning in Fall 2024 and continuing through Summer 2025:

  • The application fee is $100
  • The per-credit charge for doctorate courses is $950. This is the same for in-state and out-of-state students.
  • Retired military receive a $50 per credit hour tuition discount
  • Active duty military receive a $100 per credit hour tuition discount for doctorate level coursework.
  • Information technology fee $40 per credit hour.
  • High School and Community College full-time faculty and full-time staff receive a 20% discount on tuition for doctoral programs.

Doctor of Philosophy in the Field of Engineering Management (STEM)

The online master of science in engineering management is designed to provide students with an interdisciplinary understanding of leadership skills. Specifically, the skills needed to become effective managers in technology-driven organizations and government entities. Throughout the program, students acquire knowledge of technical engineering principles and engineering contracts within a management context.

Program graduates are equipped with the skills to effectively lead diverse engineering teams, oversee complex projects, implement innovative strategies, and drive organizational success. They also are prepared to take the Project Management Professional Examination (offered by the Project Management Institute) to receive the PMP certification.

The online program’s structure offers synchronous and asynchronous learning options, giving students the flexibility to study at their convenience and from any location.

Standardized test scores: The GRE General Test is optional for all applicants. For applicants who want to submit scores, they must be submitted officially from ETS using the institutional code 5246.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the PTE Academic is required of all applicants except those who hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a college or university in the United States or from an institution located in a country in which English is the official language, provided English was the language of instruction. Minimum scores:
- Academic IELTS: an overall band score of 7.0 with no individual score below 6.5; or
- TOEFL: 600 on paper-based or 100 on Internet-based; or
- PTE Academic: 68.
Recommendations required: Three recommendations required. If possible, one recommendation should be from your advisor at the institution from which you earned your highest degree.
Prior academic records: Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript. Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must be uploaded to your online application. Official transcripts are required only of applicants who are offered admission.
If academic records are in a language other than English, a copy in the original language and an English language translation must be uploaded. Transcript evaluations should not be uploaded. Applicants who have earned a degree from an Indian university are required to submit individual semester marksheets.
Statement of purpose: Please write a comprehensive essay of 400 to 600 words, indicating your primary and supporting fields of study, your specialized interests, and the general subject area of your planned dissertation or professional project.
Additional requirements: Applicants whose highest earned degree is a master’s degree should have a grade-point average of at least 3.5. Applicants without a master's degree must have a bachelor's degree with a GPA of at least 3.3.
All applicants must submit a resumé or CV. Applicants to the on–campus program should identify one to three faculty members whose research interests most closely match their own and note this on the online application. All on-campus applicants must choose an area of focus that most closely matches their interests and note this on the online application.

Credit Requirements 

Students entering the program with a relevant master’s degree spend a minimum of three years in full-time residency for PhD studies. During that time they take a minimum of 36 credits in coursework, including at least 18 credits in dissertation research. Students entering the program without a relevant master’s degree are required to take up 24 credits in additional of coursework. Students entering with only a bachelor’s degree are required to take 24 credits in additional coursework.

Additional requirements

  • To advance to the research phase, students must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.4 with no grade below  B-  at the completion of their coursework.  
  • Coursework must be finished within three years (five years for direct admit PhD students) of the start of the PhD program.
  • Within three years of the start of the program (five years for direct admits), Students must attempt the doctoral qualifying examination and will be given a maximum of two attempts to pass the exam.
  • Within five years of the start of the program (seven years for direct admits), students must complete their research proposal and successfully defend it to a committee of three members, at least two of which which must be from the EMSE Department. Students have a maximum of two attempts to successfully pass their research proposal defense.
  • Within seven years of the start of their PhD program (nine years for direct admits), students must complete their research dissertation and successfully defend it to a committee of five members, at least three of which must be from the EMSE Department and one must be from outside the EMSE Department. Students have a maximum of two attempts to successfully pass their dissertation defense.

Preliminary/Qualifying Exams

The Qualifying Examination is the principal means of determining whether a student qualifies as a candidate for the doctoral degree and progress to the second stage of the program. Its purpose is to ascertain that the student's background and intellectual development are adequate to support doctoral research in the central field. The DQE will be offered in January (both parts) and September (only data analysis).  Before taking the examination, students must have completed the core courses and 27 credits (nine courses) of their required coursework and have the DegreeMap finalized. Students must also submit a Doctoral Qualifying Exam Checklist to the doctoral coordinator.

The Qualifying Examination consists of two parts: a two-part written examination and a focus area exam.

Written Exam (Part I)

This exam consists of a two-hour, in-class exam covering EMSE 6765 and an eight-hour, take-home exam covering EMSE 8000 and EMSE 8001 . Both exams are offered during the last week in January. The EMSE 6765 -based exam is also offered during the last week in January. Students should apply to take this exam before the end of the preceding semester.

Focus Area Exam (Part II)

The Focus Area Exam is both a written and oral exam. Students must take this exam by the end of the semester following the successful completion of DQE part I (i.e., student will nominally complete Part I in January, and must take Part II in the third week of May). Students should register for EMSE 8999 for the semester in which they are taking the exam.

Students have three options for the basis for their oral defense:

  • A conference or journal paper, on which they are the lead author. If it is a conference paper, the full paper must have been peer-reviewed.
  • A seminal journal paper in their focus area. Their advisor and examining committee must approve the paper.
  • A 10-page literature review on a topic in their focus area. They have two weeks to complete the review.

In all cases, students are required to defend the work in front of a committee. The committee must consist of three faculty members, at least two of which are full-time in EMSE. Oral exams are approximately one hour long.

At the discretion of the committee, a student who fails any part of the qualifying examination may be given a second opportunity to attempt qualification for candidacy. Usually, only the failed portion of the examination must be retaken. Students who fail to qualify for candidacy in a doctoral program of the School are considered to have failed on a school-wide basis and will not be admitted to further doctoral study within the School.

After successful completion of the DQE, the candidate's advisor will present the academic record of the candidate and request the formation of a research committee. The Department votes on (provisional) admission to candidacy and the research committee. The research committee must be formed before the proposal defense (described below) and must consist of the student’s advisor and two other faculty members, at least one of which must be full-time. Once the student is admitted to candidacy for the degree, he/she begins specialized study and research under the supervision of their research committee. At this point the research committee remains fixed unless a change is formally requested and approved by the department chair and advisor.

Publication Requirements

Students are given 18 months from completion of DQE Part II to be accepted into a pre-approved conference for presentation on a topic relevant to their research. This presentation must be co-authored by their adviser. Failure to do so will result in termination of their candidacy in the doctoral program.

Dissertation

  • Proposal defense: After acceptance to a conference, students are required to present a written dissertation proposal to their research committee and to successfully defend the proposal in an oral defense. This proposal should consist of, at a minimum, an introductory chapter, a review of the literature chapter, a methodology chapter, and a chapter on potential results. The Request for Proposal Defense form must be filed and approved two weeks prior to the defense. The Form 5 Doctor of Science Dissertation form is present at the proposal defense and, after a successful defense, is signed by all committee members. After the defense, the advisor in collaboration with the student submits, in writing, a copy (signed by student and adviser) of all suggestions, clarifications, and corrections to the proposal along with the signed Form 5 to the doctoral coordinator within four weeks of the defense. Failure to do so will void the defense. The doctoral coordinator forwards the Form 5 to the department chair for signature. Students are given a maximum of two attempts and a maximum time limit of two years past the semester in which they pass their DQEs to successfully defend their proposal. Failure to do so will result in termination of their candidacy in the doctoral program.
  • Final examination/doctoral defense: Once the dissertation has been completed and accepted by the faculty advisor and research committee, students may file a Request for Final Examination form with the Doctoral Coordinator. This form must be filed and approved by the department chair at least two weeks prior to the final examination date. Approval is granted only when all required materials have been presented to the doctoral coordinator. The required materials include a completely filed Request for Final Examination Form, a copy of the journal article with reviews, resumes of outside evaluators and electronic and written copies of the dissertation. The final examination is oral and open to the public. The candidate must demonstrate mastery of the special field of study and of the materials and techniques used in the research. The committee of examiners may include qualified experts brought to the University especially to participate in the examination. The director of research usually serves as advocate for the candidate. Students should consult department regulations concerning the formation of the committee. The committee votes on the quality and originality of the candidate’s contribution to knowledge as well as their mastery of the scholarship and research techniques of the field. Upon a majority vote for pass, the committee recommends the candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The vote to pass may be provisional based on committee recommendations for changes to the dissertation in terms of additional analysis, writing or clarifications.

Seminar and Colloquia Requirements

  • As described in the Publication Requirements section above, students are required to present in a pre-approved conference on a topic relevant to their research. In addition, students are also encouraged to present and participate in departmental research seminars.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program

The Doctor of Philosopy (Ph.D.) degree program in Management Sciences is for advanced graduate students with a strong research interest in the management sciences . 

Students in the Ph.D. program are expected to complete several courses (depending on prior coursework), pass a comprehensive exam, and submit a Ph.D. thesis of independent and original work. The program takes most students four to five years of full-time study.

Students admitted to PhD program fall 2017 and onwards

Students who choose the PhD program must complete a total of four courses  (.50 weight per course) at the 600 or 700 level.

Of the four courses, at least two of the courses (0.50 weight per course) must be from the following list of core courses:

  • MSE 605 Organizational Theory and Behaviour
  • MSE 607 Applied Economics for Management
  • MSE 623 Big Data Analytics
  • MSE 630 Human Computer Interaction
  • MSE 631 Probabilistic Models in Operations Research
  • MSE 634 Deterministic Models in Operations Research
  • MSE 641 Text Analytics

No more than two courses (0.50 weigh per course) may be taken outside of the department. These courses could be taken in place of two elective courses. Core courses must be chosen from the above list. Any courses completed outside the department will require department approval. This must be approved prior to enrolling in the course in Quest for it to count toward your degree requirements. This includes  OVGS  courses. In order to receive pre-approval you will need to complete an Elective Pre-Approval Request Form .

Please submit an  Elective Pre-Approval Request Form  for approval before enrolment opens in Quest.

Students must maintain an overall average of at least 73% at the end of each term, with no more than two failed courses overall.

A grade less than 65% in any course counts as a failure. A failed core course must be repeated (one time only) and a failed elective must be replaced. A failed course will count toward your overall GPA but does not count toward the four course requirement (six in the case of students admitted prior to fall 2017).

The PhD program in Management Sciences has two major milestones: (1) a comprehensive exam and (2) a final thesis defence.

Comprehensive Exam

Students must pass a comprehensive exam, normally taken within 16 months (or four terms) of commencing the program. This exam will focus on:

  • Suitability of the proposed thesis topic.
  • Adequacy of the preparation of the student for completing the proposed research
  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the management sciences.

Lastly, students must write, submit, and defend a thesis of independent and original research.

Ph.D. in Management Systems Engineering

Please note : this Ph.D. program is only offered at the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church .

Management Systems Engineering (MSE) is focused on the theory, research, design, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of systems comprised of decision makers, information, organizational structures, technology, decision tools, work processes, and people, with an emphasis on the interactions among these components. MSE involves the application of engineering design and analysis methodologies and tools to these management systems. One of the primary objectives of this area is to advance the theory and science of designing and understanding of complex management and engineered systems. The MSE graduate track is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to meet the challenges posed by increasingly complex organizational systems within dynamic, global environments.

The MSE concentration is designed to expose students to a breadth of industrial engineering topics at the graduate level, depth in management systems engineering topics, and the opportunity to take technical electives in specialized areas within industrial engineering and other areas.

General Requirements

The following apply to all PhD concentrations in ISE.  Please note, however, that several of these are minimum requirements that may be exceeded by the requirements of a given concentration, and that additional requirements may exist in some concentrations.

  • Students who entered the ISE Ph.D. program prior to the Fall of 2016 may follow earlier Ph.D. requirements (“tracks”) or switch to one of the current Concentrations
  • All Ph.D. student must complete a minimum of 36 graded credit hours, including 24 grade ISE course hours (post BS, and not including ISE 5024.  Note that ISE 5814 and ISE 5804 can be counted toward the ISE course-hour requirement, unless otherwise indicated for a given concentration
  • P/F and other non-graded courses cannot be counted toward minimum credit-hour requirements
  • All required courses in a concentration must be taken for a grade (i.e., A-F)
  • Courses not listed as pre-approved electives in a concentration may be taken, or substitutions for required concentration courses made, pending approval of the student’s Ph.D. advisory committee

Admission to this program is competitive. In addition to general ODU admission requirements, you must have:

  • A master of science in engineering or a closely related technical field with a minimum 3.50 GPA from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • A bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA from an ABET-accredited program in engineering or engineering technology, or from an accredited program in applied science.

This program is designed to accommodate students who are interested to be researchers in engineering management, as well as those who hold or seek managerial and decision-making positions in public and private organizations characterized by innovation and technological leadership.  The program seeks to equip students with the ability to define, evaluate, design, improve, and manage complex human technological systems for the optimization of certain objectives that takes into account several interrelated factors such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, sustainability, and others.

Program Learning Outcomes

The main goals and objectives of the doctorate program in Engineering Management are:

  • To prepare graduate engineers from various specializations for successful research careers that combine depth in engineering research methodologies with broad knowledge of the socio-economic implications associated with major engineering decisions and technology innovations;
  • To prepare graduate engineers to assume leading roles in researching current and new approaches to effectively manage change and leverage technological innovations;
  • To enhance the creative abilities and confidence of graduate engineers in finding original solutions to pressing and complex problems;
  • To raise the level of awareness of graduate engineers with respect to long-term sustainability factors associated with the adoption of new engineering process or technology; and
  • To prepare graduate engineers to be leaders in disseminating new knowledge and in imparting new concepts and ideas to members of the public.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of this program, students should have acquired:

  • Knowledge and skills for conducting independent research to achieve original contributions and advance existing knowledge while maintaining ethical and professional conduct;
  • Advanced skills and techniques to conceptualize, formulate, analyze, and solve complex engineering problems, including interdisciplinary problems, that involve social, economic, and sustainability factors;
  • Comprehensive understanding of the concepts and applications of leadership and management practices to effectively deal with change, innovation, and their socio-economic impact;
  • Ability to disseminate original research results through reputable publications and participation in scholarly and professional events and societies;

In terms of earning potential, the average salary for MBA graduates can vary significantly depending on factors such as industry, location and years of experience.

However, according to Lightcast™ data, the advertised median annual salary for individuals with an MBA in the United States is around $74,500. For those with an M.S. in IT Management, the average yearly salary is approximately $98,800.

Florida Poly expands engineering horizons with two new master’s degrees

Florida Polytechnic University

New master’s degrees in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering are being offered at Florida Polytechnic University this fall.

Florida Polytechnic University is expanding its educational offerings this fall with the addition of two new, industry-driven master’s degrees: Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering.

“Introducing two master’s degrees in these critical fields shows Florida Poly’s commitment to providing students with the specialized STEM education they need to thrive in high-wage, high-demand careers,” said Dr. Devin Stephenson, the University’s president. “These degrees offer a powerful new pathway to both personal fulfillment and economic success, positioning graduates at the forefront of innovation.”

This expansion of the graduate program is a key element of Florida Poly’s broader growth strategy, driven by the increasing demand for the institution’s offerings. 

“We are excited to strategically expand our curriculum in alignment with the growth of our campus,” said Dr. Brad Thiessen, Florida Poly’s interim provost and vice president of academic affairs. “This change further fuels our University to become the state’s top source of talented engineers.”

The new graduate program options replace a master’s degree in engineering that offered specialization tracks in each of the disciplines. 

Ryan Sullivan, associate director of graduate and transfer admissions, said the new mechanical and electrical engineering degrees support the state’s priority of developing Programs of Strategic Emphasis in alignment with economic and workforce needs. 

“These degrees will be more in line with the marketplace and what the industry demands from students graduating from these fields,” said Ryan Sullivan, associate director of graduate and transfer admissions. 

The first cohorts of students began their programs this fall semester. Those already pursuing the previous engineering degree have the option to transition to the updated curriculum.

“This new electrical engineering degree can make you more marketable and will add to the strong success our graduates experience,” said Dr. Muhammad Rashid, Florida Poly’s interim chair of electrical, computer and cybersecurity engineering. “All the students so far who graduated from the master’s program found a job right away, and now it will be even easier for those who have a master’s degree in these specific engineering fields.”

Both new degrees will be available to students who would like to pursue either a coursework or thesis path. Additionally, they are available as part of the University’s popular 4+1 degree program, which enables students to earn graduate credit while completing their undergraduate education, thereby accelerating their path to a master’s degree.  

The new graduate degrees are part of ongoing academic development at the University. They join bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering and industrial engineering that were added in 2023, and master’s degrees in data science and engineering management in 2022.

In all, Florida Poly now offers five master’s and 12 bachelor’s programs, as well as the 4+1 degree program. 

These additional program options will make Florida Poly graduates more marketable, as enrollment in these and other graduate degrees grows, said Dr. Matt Bohm, Florida Poly’s chair of mechanical and industrial engineering.

“One of the biggest benefits of this is students will have an easier time being hired for high-level engineering jobs because hiring managers will immediately recognize their qualifications and skills,” Bohm said. “The quality of our graduates will become even more well known in the engineering community.”

RIT offers new master’s degrees in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and project management

RIT has added three new master’s degrees to its portfolio: chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and project management. Students pursuing graduate degrees are able to combine advanced coursework with hands-on opportunities in laboratories alongside faculty-researchers.

RIT is offering three new master’s degrees designed to meet industry needs.

Chemical engineering and biomedical engineering programs in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering will include new master’s degrees as part of the engineering portfolio this year to meet demands in increasing renewable energies, personalized healthcare technologies, and diagnostic system improvements.

National trends indicate a growing need for graduates with the combined skills in engineering and in the chemical and biological sciences, engineering processes, and ‘smart’ technologies.

The graduate programs will have a mix of students from the established undergraduate programs, as well as new-to-RIT students from regional, national, and international chemical engineering programs seeking advanced degrees. With the flexibility of the degree program, the department also is seeing interest and enrollments from students from other science disciplines such as physics , said Patricia Taboada-Serrano , Graduate Programs Director.

“This will be achieved through a bridge program designed to provide the appropriate engineering background required for successful completion of an advanced degree in chemical engineering,” she said.

A dozen students have been accepted for the new program and will begin chemical engineering courses this fall. There are also eight BS/MS students enrolled in the program who are completing undergraduate work.

There will be several emphasis areas: chemical and mechanical engineering applications; microelectronic focus on semiconductors, photovoltaics, microfabrication; microsystems and quantum level systems; materials science; and advanced mathematics and simulation.

“The strength of our program is the design of its curriculum, as we are able to provide depth in content and advanced skills in one year of studies in the case of full-time students,” said Taboada-Serrano, associate professor of chemical engineering. “The timeline of the completion of the graduate degree enables our MS graduates to rejoin the workforce quickly if they delayed or interrupted careers to obtain a graduate degree. The compactness of our curriculum also enables working professionals to pursue our MS degree and complete it in two to three years.”

Similar to chemical engineering, the biomedical engineering program has grown substantially since it began 10 years ago. Today, 15 students in biomedical engineering (BME) are being integrated into graduate study through the BS/MS options. There are five new students in the stand alone master's program . It is a one-year, course-based program that features a Capstone design sequence.

Biomedical engineers combine knowledge of engineering with biology, anatomy, and physiology to create devices and systems to address the need for sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and solutions.

In addition to the advanced engineering degrees, 10 RIT students this semester are the first to enroll in classes for a project management master’s degree .

The 30-credit degree is approved for both in-person and online delivery.

Project management is a process for managing the successful execution of new initiatives within an organization for the sake of expanding the breadth of capabilities, services, and products offered.

“You can use this discipline in almost any field,” said Peter Boyd , senior lecturer and graduate programs director for RIT’s School of Individualized Study , which is overseeing the program. “It’s akin to software engineering in that you could work in numerous industries, from IT to construction to aviation or health care.”

“Project management is a growing discipline. There’s a growing demand in a wide range of industries,” Boyd said.

A  RITx MicroMasters in Project Management, offered by SOIS on the edX.org platform, is an additional pathway into the program that allows students to earn RIT course credit at a reduced cost, that can be applied toward the requirements for the MS in project management. 

RIT’s master’s degree in project management differs from others across the country because he said RIT developed a curriculum “that is responsive to a wide range of student academic and professional needs, employs non-traditional teaching models that place a greater emphasis on project-based learning, and similar active learning experiences.” RIT’s degree also promotes strong student/faculty mentor-mentee relationships and brings project management to industries that would benefit from it but have otherwise not traditionally embraced the discipline.

The degree program allows students to customize their courses for their degrees, providing a natural path of interdisciplinary study. This allows students the ability to better specialize to their specific interests, giving them a competitive edge in their field of interest and making them more valuable to an employer.

Of the 10 courses required to earn the MS degree, four are elective, so students may use advanced certificates or other courses already offered at RIT. The remaining six classes focus on the core topics of the project management discipline and align with the standards set by the Project Management Institute, the governing body for the field.  

One of those students is Dana Harp, who is taking the classes online from her home in Lewes, Del. She does clinical research remotely for Pfizer.

She received her edX project management MicroMasters in 2020 and transferred those credits toward a project management advanced certificate with RIT in 2021. She took a couple of years off from education and was pleasantly surprised when she learned RIT now offers a master’s in project management.

“I was always interested in getting my master’s degree,” Harp said. “My company has a great program to reimburse for education, so I have the opportunity to continue learning without having to pay for it all myself. And it will definitely open up more opportunities for promotion by having that degree. It will give me a leg up for the trajectory I want to be on. This is going to help me moving forward.”

Harp hopes to receive her master’s degree in the spring or next fall, and she’s excited to be one of the first students receiving the RIT degree.

“I’m lucky all of my earlier classes transferred over, and it’s really cool to see that some of the professors I’ve had in previous classes are teaching in this program as well,” she said. “I think it’s going to be really fun.”
