PhD Scholarship in Marine Conservation Finance

Monash university , australia.

Job No.:  662857

Location: Clayton campus

Employment Type: Full-time

Duration: 3-year and 6-month fixed-term appointment

Remuneration: The successful applicant will receive a Research Living Allowance, at current value of $35,013AUD per annum 2024 full-time rate (tax-free stipend), indexed plus allowances as per RTP stipend scholarship conditions at: www.monash.edu/graduate-research/study/scholarships/scholarship-policy-and-procedures . Domestic applicants will be prioritised, however, a tuition fee scholarship and Single Overseas Health Cover (OSHC) will be provided for a successful international awardee.

The Opportunity

This PhD scholarship will align with the Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project, ‘ Sustainable Business Models for Marine Conservation ’, conducted by Dr Benjamin Thompson .

Marine conservation remains severely underfunded despite the pressing need to safeguard ocean resources, ecosystems, and coastal communities effectively and equitably. Alongside philanthropic donations and grants, innovative financing models for marine conservation are now emerging through private sector actors such as corporations, entrepreneurs, and investors. Dr Thompson’s project will investigate under which circumstances sustainable business models can be developed to generate profit alongside positive marine conservation outcomes. The successful applicant will develop a relatable but distinct project; for example, examining relationships between the institutional, financial, and/or business aspects of marine conservation, and optionally, linking to broader developments around the blue economy.

Undertaking this PhD as part of a larger project has several advantages. First, the successful candidate will be integrated into an already successful research agenda that has been funded by the ARC, and will have access to funding to support for fieldwork travel and conference attendance. Second, the candidate will benefit from expert supervision from research leaders in environmental social science. Finally, the candidate will benefit from being part of outcomes from the research, which may include co-authored publications, funded symposia, school-engagement exercises, and future grant applications.

Monash University is ranked 42nd in the world in the 2024 QS World University Rankings. It is also ranked 21st in the world for performance against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2023 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. Monash is the largest university in Australia and the applicant will be based at the Clayton campus in Melbourne – regularly ranked among the most livable cities in the world. The School of Social Science sits within the Faculty of Arts, and collaborates extensively with the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Business and Economics, and the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI), among others.

Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will have at least one degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., geography, environmental science, business, economics, finance). Specific experience across conservation science, environmental finance, corporate sustainability and/or human geography would be advantageous. They will also have experience conducting social science research methods, whilst experience with other research methods such as geospatial analysis, ecological census techniques, and/or economic and financial analysis would be advantageous. Dr Thompson’s project will afford the successful applicant optional opportunities for fieldwork in Fiji and/or the Philippines, but applicants are welcome to propose fieldwork in countries where they have pre-existing existing connections, including Australia.

The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record. In its assessment, the selection committee will prioritise applicants who hold an Australian (or equivalent international) Honours or Master’s degree (both in a relevant field), with a significant research component and with first-class honours/H1 awarded. Candidates are advised to discuss their experience with prior research projects (e.g., Masters thesis) including the methods used, in their application.

Details of eligibility requirements, including English-language proficiency skills, to undertake a PhD in the Faculty of Arts are available at www.monash.edu/arts/graduate_research/how-to-apply . Applicants should ensure they familiarise themselves with these requirements before deciding whether they should apply.

Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus in Melbourne. Please note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

The successful applicant will be expected to enrol by September 2024. However, there may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement.

The Villanova Master of Science in Finance (MSF) offers a curriculum that combines a solid foundation in finance with exposure to the areas reshaping finance today. Over the span of 11 months, you will take an intensive course load of financial theory and principles, followed by an opportunity to explore a variety of electives in statistics, analytics, quantitative finance, investment management, real estate, machine learning, coding and more.

The MSF program ties in the latest technology with VSB’s Gmelich Lab for Financial Markets , along with the experience of VSB’s world-class faculty and noteworthy industry executives. With an emphasis on hands-on learning, you will put theory into practice with every class, giving you the confidence to think and respond on a professional level.

  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Designed for recent graduates and those with a few years of work experience, the MSF program at VSB also incorporates a strong professional development component with resources and support to help you achieve your short-and long-term career objectives. Research fellowships are also available, enabling students to engage in innovative research with VSB faculty.

This fall, Vanderbilt Peabody College of education and human development seeks to strengthen and advance its global reach. The Peabody Research Office will expand its mission and strategy to include Peabody Global Initiatives. Peabody Global Initiatives will support faculty to pursue international research and disseminate knowledge as well as develop impactful partnerships and networks through a culturally and contextually responsive, collaborative, and data-driven approach.

“Peabody Global Initiatives reflects our commitment to crossing geographical boundaries through research and partnerships in education and human development,” said Ellen Goldring , Patricia and Rodes Hart Professor of Education and Leadership and vice dean of Peabody College. “As we continue to expand on our recent global engagement successes we will further support faculty to collaborate around the world to develop and research policy and practice that strengthens learning and human development.”

The establishment of the new office dovetails with two Peabody faculty members beginning research collaborations supported by Vanderbilt Global Engagement Research Seed Grants . These grants provide financial support to new and innovative faculty research endeavors that involve global engagement. They are meant to seed projects with larger funding capacities.

Jason Chow , associate professor of special education, is leading efforts to establish the infrastructure for a collaborative focused on synthesizing implementation science research across the globe. Implementation science is the study of the best methods and strategies for ensuring evidence-based approaches are applied by practitioners and policy makers to improve people’s lives. Chow and colleagues at Monash University and the Centre for Evidence and Implementation, both in Australia, and the National University of Singapore plan to identify the collaborative’s resources and needs and to develop its initial infrastructure. Their goal is to improve the sustained use of evidence in global practices and policies. As part of this project, his team plans to develop workflows for producing context-specific research reviews for practitioners and policymakers. They will collaborate with local community partners to ensure the results and recommendations from evidence syntheses are tailored to each nation’s local contexts.

Xiu Cravens , professor of the practice of education policy and leadership, is spearheading a new collaboration to advance teacher development in the Asia-Pacific region through improvement science. Improvement science is a problem-solving approach to develop, adapt, contextualize, and scale innovations that improve educational processes and outcomes. The seed grant will support Cravens’ review of peer practices and help identify research partners with the support from four regional learning hubs: the National Institute of Education in Singapore, the Center for Educational Research and Innovation at National Taiwan Normal University, the National Training Center for Secondary Principals at East China Normal University, and the Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change at the Education University of Hong Kong. Working together, they will pursue additional funding for multi-country collaborations and capacity building through research-practice partnerships. The seed grant will also lay the foundation for the Peabody-Asia Consortium for Education, providing a platform for Vanderbilt researchers to engage with academic and professional institutions and individuals in the region.

These awards and the newly established Peabody Global Initiatives reflect Peabody’s commitment to worldwide collaboration that enhances learning and development in diverse contexts and translates discoveries into more effective practice and policy.
