Developing your knowledge as an educator with a Doctor of Education (EdD) may help you grow your career. A doctorate is the most advanced degree you can earn in the education field. 

If you’re considering this degree path, you may be wondering, can you get a scholarship for a doctorate? Yes, as you’ll see in this guide, there are grants and doctoral scholarships in education that may help you cover the expenses of your doctoral program.

Tuition for a Doctorate in Education Program

EdD program tuition to earn a Doctor of Education may vary depending on a variety of factors, including your school of choice, whether or not you reside on campus, whether the school is private or public, and other factors. For example, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, private nonprofit school tuition tends to cost more than private for-profit school tuition and tends to cost much more than public school tuition.

Students may pay for their EdD education in a variety of ways. Some EdD programs may provide a stipend through an assistantship. There may also be financial aid options like grants, which are funds given to students from the federal government for education based on financial need. 

EdD scholarships may also be available, based on factors like financial need, experience and achievements. Since each program may differ, you may use this guide to explore grant and scholarship options for EdD students.

Grants for Doctor of Education Students

Grants are a form of gift aid that come from the federal government, state governments, colleges, universities, career schools, private organizations and nonprofits. “Gift aid” means the grant generally doesn’t have to be repaid.

Most grants from the government are based on financial need. You’ll want to make sure you fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ® ) form to be eligible for federal grants for doctoral students in educational leadership.

• One federal grant is the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant, which provides grants of up to $4,000 a year. You’re required to complete a teaching service obligation to receive the funds as grant money, which generally requires teaching in a high-need field and serving as a teacher at a school or educational service agency that serves low-income students. If you don’t fulfill the grant requirements, the financial aid may be converted to a loan with interest.
• The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office of Planning, Research & Evaluation also offers various grants, which support research in areas including childcare, Head Start and Early Head Start, child welfare and other topics. Criteria vary depending on the grant category.
• The AFT Robert G. Porter Scholars Program provides 10 one-time $1,000 grants to members of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The grants are solely merit-based and center on academic excellence while also considering volunteerism and activism at school and in the community.
• For graduate students working on their dissertation, the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Grants Program provides research funding and professional training and development. Students working on a variety of education-related research may apply.
• Another EdD grant awarded to support research related to a dissertation is the Children’s Literature Association (ChLA) Hannah Beiter Graduate Student Research Grants program. These grants are available for individual awards ranging from $500 to $1,500. To be eligible, winners must either be members of the ChLA or join before they receive the funds.
• For students focused on autism research, the Organization for Autism Research offers a $2,000 grant for doctoral candidates. Applicants must send a request for proposal in order to qualify.
• The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has a Literacy Grants program, with grants of up to $2,500 to Phi Kappa Phi members who are working on ongoing literacy projects or are creating new initiatives.
• The SHAPE America Research Grant Program provides one or more annual awards of up to $2,000 for graduate students who are members of the Society of Health and Physical Educators. Primary consideration goes to the study of physical activity in natural environments, like schools, parks and home settings.
• Every month, the STEM education company Pitsco awards a $350 grant for education students who are focused on integrating engineering or technology in the classroom. Similarly, the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) and its Foundation for Technology and Engineering Educators (FTEE) offer a variety of grants focused on the advancement of engineering and technology education.
• For EdD students who are also math teachers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) offers a variety of math-focused grants with award amounts ranging from $1,500 to $24,000. Applicants generally need to be NCTM members to qualify.
• Various schools may also have grant programs for EdD students. One such grant is the Esther Katz Rosen Fund Grants program at Duke University. These grant amounts range from $1,000 to $5,000. Graduate students may be eligible when they do research or work related to the psychological understanding of gifted youth and children.
• Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) has a grant program presented by SAI Philanthropies, Inc. Grants are available to SAI members, and most are focused on supporting music education.  
• The Steven A. Stahl Research Grant comes from the International Literacy Association (ILA) and is a $1,000 award granted to one recipient annually. Applicants must be graduate students conducting classroom research in reading to qualify.
• There are numerous TOEFL® grants and awards available for graduate students who are working in international higher education or foreign or second language assessment, research and teaching.

Guide to Scholarships for EdD Programs

Doctor of Education scholarships may be available based on financial aid, your particular career experience , your teaching goals, what type of research you want to do and other factors. Scholarships for EdD students generally don’t have to be repaid. 

Some EdD students may be able to supplement most or even all of their education by securing scholarships they’re eligible for. Consider the following:

• The A. Harry Passow Classroom Teacher Scholarship is available for teachers of grades K–12 who are dedicated to developing their teaching skills, particularly related to teaching gifted youth in a variety of educational settings. The scholarship application requires letters of recommendation and a summary of coursework and how it relates to the scholarship.
• For Rhode Island residents, the Antonio Cirino Memorial Scholarship from the Rhode Island Foundation comes in award amounts ranging from $2,000 to $12,000. Applicants must be graduate students focused on arts education or currently working in the arts with a desire to teach.
• For teachers in California, the California Teachers Association (CTA) offers scholarships for up to $5,000 for CTA members. Applicants should demonstrate high academic achievement in their college coursework.
• The Carmelita K. Williams VSRA Scholarship, up to $1,000, is available to EdD students studying at an accredited university or college in Virginia that has a degree program focused on the field of reading. Applicants must be members of a local council, the Virginia State Reading Association and the International Reading Association for at least a year prior to application.
• The Donald and Verna Duncan Special Education Scholarship is offered through the PDK Educational Foundation. The scholarship is for graduate students whose field of study has a major emphasis in special education/rehabilitation and mental health counseling. The award amount may vary.
• The Larry E. Frase Memorial Scholarship for Educational Research is a $1,000 award for doctoral students who are PDK members and who are pursuing study of the motivational factors in education. Requirements include a recommendation letter, an application form and official transcripts.
• For African American and Hispanic students who are interested in teaching at universities and colleges in the state of Florida, the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship Program covers up to $5,000 in annual tuition for each of three academic years, plus an annual stipend of $12,000, for fellowship members who study at one of nine participating Florida universities.
• The NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program provides $27,500 fellowships for EdD students whose dissertations show unique perspectives on formal or informal education anywhere in the world. In 2022, 35 dissertation fellowships will be awarded.
• The PDK Educational Foundation makes more than 100 scholarships available to educational students. You’ll be considered for all scholarships you’re eligible for with only one application. One-time and renewable awards range from $500 to $4,000. Applicants must be pursuing a career in public education, be enrolled for the fall semester of the application year and be a member of at least one of the following associations: Educators Rising, Pi Lambda Theta, Educators Rising Collegiate and/or PDK Association.
• AASA, the School Superintendents Association, offers Educational Administration Scholarships to graduate students who are pursuing an educational administration degree in order to become school superintendents. Applications require essays and letters of endorsement.
• The Intercollegiate Studies Institute offers fellowships of up to $15,000 for graduate students who intend to teach. Up to 15 fellowships are available for students pursuing advanced study in the social sciences or humanities.
• Pi Lambda Theta offers student support scholarships for up to $2,000 each. Applicants must be Pi Lambda Theta members in good standing.
• The Ruth Crymes TESOL Fellowship for Graduate Study is a $1,500 scholarship for TESOL members who are graduate students currently enrolled in a TEFL/TESOL graduate program. Applicants must plan on working on a graduate study project that’s relevant to TEFL or TESOL in an upcoming academic year.
• The AFCEA Educational Foundation offers STEM Teacher Graduate Scholarships with awards of $2,500 each to students who are pursuing graduate degrees for the purpose of teaching STEM to students in grades K–12. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who live in and intend to teach in the United States.

While we can’t find information on who said these words, we can’t help but laugh! You, a student pursuing your doctoral degree, may even laugh at it because there’s a grain of truth to it. Your doctoral dissertation, after all, will likely be about creating new knowledge or building on old knowledge because “nobody knows anything” in a manner of speaking. 

But why are you pursuing a doctoral degree when your master’s degree will suffice for most jobs? There are even people who believe that it’s a waste of time and money for many reasons. Some people push for it because of the numerous benefits that it brings.

So, which one’s a better perspective? A doctoral degree is about contributing to the existing body of knowledge through original research. It is considered an introduction to independent research in your chosen field, with your doctoral dissertation as the first of many intellectual masterpieces .

Let’s first take a look at the unfavorable view because there’s also some merit to it. For one thing, there’s the cost of doctoral education that, in U.S. universities, the average is $133,340 . In Ivy League universities, the cost can be higher – at Harvard University, for example, the full tuition needed for the first two years of study is $54,032, exclusive of health insurance, housing, books and supplies, and food expenses.

Yes, indeed, it isn’t cheap to get a doctoral degree in the United States , not even in one of the lesser-known universities!

In addition, there’s a sense of dissatisfaction among doctoral students. You may feel, at one point, that you’re doing slave labor, no thanks to the 10-hour workdays and low pay during your research.

Your employment prospects may also seem uncertain, considering the competition due to the oversupply of Ph.D. holders. The number of Ph.D. holders exceeds the number of employment opportunities for them, too! Such a disconnection partly stems from the high degree of specialization required to get a doctoral degree, not to mention that Ph.D. holders have high employment expectations.

Still, the number of doctoral degree holders in the U.S. has more than doubled between 2000 and 2018! In 2000, there were 2 million Ph.D. holders, and by 2018, there were already 4.5 million. Why do people pursue doctoral degrees despite the myriad of challenges that come with them?

Springfield Research Fund Dissertation Fellowship offers graduate students the opportunity to research contemporary LGBTQIA+ issues, aiming to dispel stereotypes and negative information contributing to prejudice and discrimination. Intersectional stigmas will be prioritized in 2024. It offers a $10,000 fund for each recipient, with a $1,000 bonus upon publication.

ONS Foundation Josh Gottheil Memorial Stem Cell Transplant Development Award

NCTM & AMTE Early Career Research Grant

• Amount: $10,000 each, maximum 
• Deadline of Application: November 1, 2024 

Granted in partnership with Eugene P. & Clara M. Smith Mathematics Education Research Fund, the Early Career Research Grant accepts applications from doctoral candidates pursuing math education degrees. The grant must be used in supporting their doctoral research project, preferably projects that bridge research and practice. 

Note that early career math educators or those who have completed either an EdD or PhD in math education or other related fields within the past five years are eligible to apply. Doctoral students will only be considered if they have advanced to candidacy status in accredited programs. 

Newberry Consortium in American Indian Studies Faculty Fellowship

• Amount: $5,000/month (Long-term fellowship for 4-9 months); $5,000/month (Short-term fellowship for a month only)
• Deadline of Application: November 1, 2024 (Long-term fellowship); December 15, 2024 (Short-term fellowship)

The American Indian Studies Faculty Fellowship is intended for scholars in the early stages of their careers who are involved in American Indian studies, specifically research in the Newberry Consortium collections. Doctoral students are welcome to apply. The monthly stipend can be used for a wide range of education-related expenses, too.

Fellows receive the NCAIS research carrel and other fellowship privileges, as well as perform responsibilities related to their research. These include research presentations, seminar participation, and consultation with other NCAIS Graduate Student Fellows.

AIA Fellowship for Study in the U.S.

• Deadline of Application: November 1, 2024

The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) offers post-doctoral research fellowships for archaeologists working at Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI) or its project collaborators. The fellowships are for either fall 2024 or spring 2025 in selected universities, including the University of Cincinnati, the Joukowsky Institute at Brown University, or the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Fellows are provided with financial support for travel expenses, a stipend for living expenses, and residency at a university housing or rental housing, as well as library privileges. The residency lasts for 2-3 months only, during which time the Fellows are expected to give a minimum of one lecture at their respective host university. 

Applications should include a duly filled-up online application form, a curriculum vitae, and two references, among others.

National Gem Consortium Ph.D. Engineering Fellowship

• Amount: $16,000 living stipend for the first academic year plus a paid summer internship
• Deadline of Application: November 8, 2024

The National GEM Consortium in Engineering Fellowship is open to Ph.D. students belonging to the minority, and who have been accepted into a doctoral program straight from a bachelor’s degree program or who have earned a master’s in Engineering. Fellows can be enrolled in any of the participating GEM member universities. 

The above-mentioned stipend applies to the first academic year of fellowship for a Ph.D. Engineering/Science Fellow. After that, the fellow will enjoy a continued living stipend up to the fifth year of Ph.D. studies through a combination of alternative funding sources. The fellow will also have his tuition and fees paid for by the GEM university member.

American Association of University Women American Fellowship Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grants

• Amount: $8,000–$50,000
• Deadline of Application: November 30, 2024

The Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grant is the oldest female-specific scholarship program for graduate students. Of course, only female graduate students are considered, and they must either be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants should also be available for eight consecutive weeks during the summer.

The American Association of University Women’s selection committee applies strict criteria in choosing the annual crop of scholars. The criteria include academic excellence, project originality, project design quality, project scholarly significance to the discipline, and project feasibility. The applicant’s qualifications are also considered.

History of Art Institutional Fellowships

• Amount: $30,000
• Deadline of Application: November 30, 2024 at 5 PM EST

Devoted to studying European art, architecture, and archaeology heritage, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation chooses six applicants each year to receive up to $30,000 worth of research grants. Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program focused on antiquity to the early 19th century. They should also be completing all higher degree work except dissertation.  

Patty and Paul Levi Research Award

The Patty and Paul Levi Research Award, offered by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, grants a predoctoral student or students annually. They should be doing research related to preventative periodontology under faculty supervision. The applicant can apply post-graduation, provided their research was conducted during predoctoral studies, and must submit their current C.V.s.

SMART Scholarship Program

• Amount: Up to $46,000
• Deadline of Application: December 1, 2024

SMART, a Department of Defense-funded scholarship program, provides full tuition, stipends, and guaranteed employment for STEM students pursuing degrees in 24 disciplines. It aims to increase underrepresented students’ participation in the DoD STEM workforce, particularly for high school seniors in Historically Black colleges and universities.

Norman S. Baldwin Fishery Science Scholarship

Norman S. Baldwin, the inaugural executive secretary of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, guided the organization for 15 years until his untimely passing in 1971. The Norman S. Baldwin Fishery Science Scholarship seeks to inspire talented graduate students to pursue advanced research in fishery biology and Great Lakes science, prioritizing scientific excellence and innovative inquiry.

The chosen candidates will be awarded $3,000 scholarships each, with the Awards Committee distributing them as needed. Applicants must be master’s or Ph.D. students with relevant research topics who have not been previously awarded. 

David M. Dolan Scholarship

• Amount: $1,000 
• Deadline of Application: December 1, 2024 

David M. Dolan’s scholarship, which started in 2014, honors students conducting graduate research in statistics, mathematical modeling, data analysis, or quantitative decision support to advance the understanding and management of Great Lakes ecosystems. The scholarship is open to exceptional students whose graduate research aligns with Dr. Dolan’s work on Great Lakes ecosystems but not relatives of IAGLR officers or directors.

Applicants must submit an extended abstract and a brief title for their proposed research. It should highlight how the study of the Great Lakes relates to the use of applied environmental statistics and modeling. In addition to the $3,000, recipients will receive a one-year membership in the IAGLR.

Lawren H. Daltroy Preceptorship in Health Communication

• Amount: Up to $15,000 per year 
• Deadline of Application: December 2, 2024 by 5 PM EST

The Lawren H. Daltroy Preceptorship in Health Communication from the Rheumatology Research Foundation supports student, researcher, and clinician training in rheumatology. They are among the top supporters of those who dedicate their studies to enhancing patient-clinician interactions and communications. 

Eligible candidates include trainees, junior researchers, and health professionals without funding. Projects must address patient-clinician interactions and communications, including small-scale research, curriculum creation, participation in education, patient-facing materials, health literacy/numeracy studies, and shared decision-making in healthcare settings.

AWWA Abel Wolman Scholarship

• Amount: $30,000 for one year (If necessary, a fellow can apply and be approved for the second year of financial support)
• Deadline of Application: December 2024

Students who are pursuing advanced training and research, including doctoral studies in water supply and treatment and its related fields, can apply for the Abel Wolman Fellowship. The doctoral fellowship provides financial support for up to two years to an outstanding student. Applications can be sent to the American Water Works Association (AWWA), and more information can be seen on its site.

AWWA Larson Aquatic Research Support Scholarships

• Amount: $7,000/student

Made in honor of Dr. Larson, the Larson Aquatic Research Support (LARS) scholarship is available for outstanding doctoral students engaged in the fields of science and engineering. The selection committee chooses one doctoral student every year for the scholarship, with an emphasis on excellent academics and leadership potential.

Applications must include a resume, official transcripts, three recommendation letters, and GRE scores as well as a course of study. Be sure to submit your research plans, too, with your application.

Martin Frank Diversity Travel Awards

• Amount: Up to $1,500 in travel support 
• Deadline of Application: December 8, 2024

The Martin Frank Diversity Travel Award program aims to increase participation in physiological sciences among trainees and early career faculty from historically underrepresented backgrounds. It provides travel awards to students and professionals interested in attending the American Physiology Summit. Recipients receive travel reimbursement, mentoring, and networking opportunities. The program is open to specific underrepresented populations defined by the NIH .

National Gem Consortium Ph.D. Science Scholarship

• Amount: $16,000 living stipend plus a paid summer internship

The National Gem Consortium’s PhD Science Scholarship is exclusive for students belonging to the minority in their first year of doctoral studies. Applicants should be pursuing a natural science discipline, such as earth science, chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, and computer science. The scholarship applies to an accredited GEM member university.

Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship or legal residency. Applicants must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and get promising GRE scores.

Frances C. Allen Fellowship

• Amount: $3,000 per month (1-2 month’s duration)
• Deadline of Application: December 15, 2024

The Frances C. Allen Fellowship is exclusive to women of American Indian heritage. Applicants must be engaged in studies related to the Newberry Research Library’s collections, and the fellow must use the resources at the Chicago, Illinois, library. Applicants should also write to the library for more details, although application forms are available on the official website.

Gil Kushner Memorial Travel Award

• Amount: $750 in travel support 
• Deadline of Application: December 20, 2024

Gilbert Kushner was key in establishing applied anthropology as a graduate discipline. Gil has made USF’s Department of Anthropology among the most thriving applied research centers. The $750 travel expense award is given annually to a select few who want to attend the SfAA annual meeting.

Sallie Mae Scholarship

• Deadline of Application: December 31, 2024

Sallie Mae has launched a scholarship program for employees’ children pursuing college education. The program offers renewable scholarships for full-time study at an accredited institution, with eligibility determined by the sponsor. The scholarship is open to legal residents of the United States.

Lou Hochberg Thesis and Dissertation Awards 

• Type of Scholarship: Continuous
• Amount: $1,000
• Deadline of Application: Continuous

While the Lou Hochberg scholarship’s $1,000 grant isn’t much, its eligibility requirements are relatively easy to comply with. The essays submitted should focus on the social, biophysical, and experimental aspects of Wilhelm Reich’s discoveries. These are then judged based on their clarity, merit, and accuracy, and there’s no deadline for submissions.

Next in my series on  How To Fully Fund Your PhD , I provide a list below of universities that offer full funding to all students admitted to their PhD programs in education, international education, and educational leadership.

You can find several competitive, external fellowships in the ProFellow database for graduate and doctoral study, but it is useful to seek out PhD programs that offer full funding to all admitted students. When a doctoral program indicates that they provide full funding to their PhD students, in most cases this means they provide each admitted student full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the four to the six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Universities offering Fully Funded PhD Programs in Education

Boston university, phd in educational studies.

(Boston, MA): Students admitted to the program will be fully funded for five years. Students work closely with BU Wheelock faculty as assistants in research and teaching.

Drexel University, PhD in Education & Educational Leadership

(Philadelphia, PA): Drexel University provides tuition remission, a living stipend, and health insurance subsidies through research and teaching assistantships.

Harvard University, PhD in Education

(Cambridge, MA): Harvard guarantees full financial support to PhD students—including tuition, health fees, and basic living expenses—for a minimum of five years. This multi-year funding package includes a combination of tuition grants, stipends, traineeships, teaching fellowships, research assistantships, and other academic appointments.

New York University, PhD in Education

(New York, NY): NYU Steinhardt awards all students (including international students) who are offered full-time admission to our Ph.D. programs a full funding and mentoring package.

Queen’s University, PhD in Education

(Ontario, Canada): Queen’s guarantees a minimum funding package currently valued at $18,000 [CAD] per year for four years for full-time doctoral students; in most cases, funding packages are higher (2011-12 Average: $25,800). In addition, Queen’s guarantees an international tuition award (or equivalent award) valued at $5,000 per year for four years for eligible international doctoral students.

University of California Irvine, PhD in Education

(Irvine, CA): Effective 2015, all incoming UC Irvine PhD in Education students, including California residents, non-residents, and international students, are offered five years of financial support. Funding includes an academic year stipend or salary, tuition and Student Services Fee waiver, and student health insurance.

University of California San Diego PhD in Education

All PhD students at UC San Diego are guaranteed funding for five years which is equivalent to the amount allocated for a 50% TA position. Funding packages can consist of instructional assistantships, Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) positions, university or outside fellowships, and/or stipends. A minimum financial support package of $20,000 for the first year.

University of Colorado, PhD in Education

(Boulder, CO): Admitted doctoral students received four-year funding packages including a stipend and a tuition grant equal to the cost of tuition (in-state and out-of-state).

University of Michigan, PhD in Education

(Ann Arbor, MI): Funding for students admitted into our doctoral programs includes tuition, health and dental benefits for students and their families, and a stipend for living expenses. Each of the programs also provides additional support for conference travel, research projects, and writing. 

Michigan State University PhD in Education

(East Lansing, MI): For most students in the doctoral program, international and domestic, the primary source of on-campus support is graduate assistantships. Assistantship stipends depend on the level of assistantship. In addition to the stipend, all graduate assistants receive a waiver of nine (9) credits of tuition per semester. They offer a variety of multi-year recruiting fellowships for incoming doctoral students.

University of Virginia, PhD in Education

(Charlottesville, VA): Financial support packages, which may include a combination of fellowship funding, bi-weekly pay, tuition remission/adjustment, and health insurance, are decided at various administrative levels.

Vanderbilt University, PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy

(Nashville, TN): All Peabody graduate (Ph.D.) students receive full tuition funding through a combination of University Tuition Scholarships and/or merit awards.

Stanford University Fully Funded PhD in Education

(Stanford, CA): Stanford GSE offers all admitted Ph.D. students a five-year funding guarantee that provides tuition aid, fellowship stipend, and assistantship salary, and covers the standard cost of attendance. Click here for more funding information.

University of Arkansas, PhD in Education Policy

(Fayetteville, AR): Graduate assistantships offer qualified applicants a full tuition waiver, a health insurance benefit plus an attractive annual stipend. Distinguished Doctoral Fellowships are combined with graduate assistantships to provide a package of stipends totaling $40,000 per year a tuition waiver, and further benefits.

University of Washington, PhD in Education

(Seattle, WA): The UW College of Education Faculty Council distributes a number of scholarships annually. The College of Education supports 120+ graduate students each academic year through teaching, research, and staff assistantship positions. Primary consideration is usually given to doctoral students.

Washington University in St. Louis, PhD in Education

(Saint Louis, MO): Ph.D. students receive full tuition remission, a health fee subsidy, and a monthly stipend to defray living expenses. The stipend is paid over 12 months (August-July), which includes summer funding. Washington University guarantees funding for Ph.D. students for up to six years as long as satisfactory progress is made in their program. Competitive fellowships are also available.

Concordia University, PhD in Education

(Quebec, Canada): Competitive funding packages in the form of awards, teaching, and research assistantships are offered at the time of admission to most students to allow them to focus on their research and studies. Students are automatically considered for all entrance graduate awards when they apply to Concordia, provided they meet eligibility criteria.

Indiana University, PhD in Education

They offer a variety of funding opportunities for Ph.D. students, including fellowships, research, and teaching assistantships which include a stipend, tuition remission, and student health insurance. All admitted graduate students who meet departmental deadlines are automatically considered for available fellowships.

University of Pennsylvania, PhD in Education Policy

(Philadelphia, PA ): All Ph.D. students are guaranteed a full scholarship for their first four years of study, as well as a stipend and student health insurance. Penn GSE is committed to making your graduate education affordable, and they offer generous scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships.

University of Delaware, PhD in Education

(Newark, DE): Full-time Ph.D. in Education students receive financial support for four years through a variety of sources, including assistantships and tuition scholarships. Students with assistantships receive a 100% tuition scholarship and a 9-month stipend, plus health insurance. Merit-based supplemental funding is available.

Very useful information you’ve presented here after scouring the internet for weeks. This term fully funded was the buzzword I was missing. Now to find fully funded PhD programs that can be done online with minimal residency so I don’t have to uproot my family and my current teaching load. Are there any online programs that are fully funded?

Tracy, I have not been able to find any so far. Online programs are typically offered by for-profit universities. However, if you can find a 3-year PhD position that does not require the normal 2 years of course (typically you need to have a Master’s/postgraduate degree already to be eligible for these), you may not need to be in-resident. These programs are more common in Europe, Asia and Oceania. Thus you might spend some time abroad to get started, and then could complete your PhD dissertation remotely. This would require negotiation with your supervisors.

Try Colorado State University, their program is fairly new (10) but they have some online portion and a short residency program.

Most of these fellowships sound like assistantships that waive tuition and provide a stipend in exchange for work. NSF gives out fellowships that amount to more than $100,000 for 3 years of study, plus you can work an assistantship. Stanford is making three fellowships each year with a total value of $160,000 for business students. Compared to Fellowships in Science and Technology, Education majors get almost nothing. Education is just not a national priority and is certainly not on an equal footing with STEM fields.

Hi. I wanted to share that you do not need to enter a PhD program specifically in the subject of Educational Technology to do a PhD dissertation in this subject. You can do a dissertation in this subject in a general PhD in Education program. The key is to identify universities with professors who have done research in this subject who are availble serve as your advisor. You might also do a dissertation in this subject in Business PhD program.

Hi, thanks for the wonderful info. I’m interested in a few different areas for a PHD that I don’t see listed: Buddhism, Comparative Religions, Psychology, Mythology or Stories (lit, film, poetry, all forms). Given that these subject are not exactly the cats’ meow in terms of financial opportunities afterwords, the study is a labor of love and philanthropy. Could there possibly be a school for me somewhere? I would do a part-time online program with an international university if needed too – I’m in Southern California.

I have a JD, a few credits short of a LLM (in Comparative Law), and a MA (in African-American World Studies). I have been working as a lawyer for a non-profit Public Interest firm for 12 years, but I want to get a PhD. I have a small family now (3,8 year old girls), so I need a PhD program that is fully funded. I am interested in “Justice” so I can pursue a PhD in either Law, African American Studies, or Education. The goal of the GSE PhD in Education is to prepare the next generation of leading education researchers. The cornerstone of the doctoral experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Education is the research apprenticeship that all students undertake, typically under the guidance of their academic advisor, but often with other Stanford faculty as well.

In this apprenticeship model, doctoral students are provided with a multi-year funding package that consists of opportunities each quarter to serve as teaching and research assistants for faculty members' courses and research projects. By this means, and in combination with the courses they take as part of their program, students are prepared over an approximately five-year period to excel as university teachers and education researchers.

The Antonio Cirino Memorial Art Education Award ranges from $2,000 to $12,000. The scholarship is awarded by the Rhode Island Foundation to artists pursuing a master’s or PhD degree in art education. Recipients must intend to teach at the K-12, undergraduate, or graduate level. Qualified applicants must live in Rhode Island and exhibit financial need. The Carmelita K. Williams Graduate Scholarship exists to honor the past IRA president. The $2,500 scholarship is awarded by the Virginia State Reading Association. The McKnight Doctoral Fellowship Program awards $17,000 to Black and Hispanic PhD students. The annual scholarship is administered by the Florida Education Fund. Each year, the National Academy of Education (NAEd) awards 35 Spencer Dissertation Fellowships. These fellowships award $27,500 each to extraordinary scholars. What are some other sources of funding for my doctoral degree?

The federal government is your best bet. This article focuses on third party scholarships for people earning their doctoral degree. This is because federal student aid for doctoral degrees is pretty scarce. Federal student aid for those earning doctoral degrees is often awarded for specific research. Your doctoral program may have a list of the kinds of funding available, so that would be a great place to check.

Financial assistance at this level often comes through research grants. This is a primary source of government funding at this level. Research assistantships are also sometimes available through your school of education. These can help provide for your living expenses if your doctorate degree is not research focused. We would advise you to check with your school of education for research grants and other forms of financial support.

Financial aid is harder to come by the higher you go in academia. One of the best ways to pay for your doctorate degree is to apply to teach at the school you plan to attend. If you have your master’s degree in education, this is a great option. Often you get discounted or free tuition for pursuing your doctorate if you teach in the same school of education. It is, after all, possible to teach undergraduate students if you have a master’s degree. With financial aid being tough to come by, this is likely your best option.

Any advice on choosing a school?

There are many things to consider when choosing a school to earn your education degree. Financial aid, living expenses, and more should be considered when choosing a doctorate degree. Location is also a factor. It’s no secret teachers don’t make a lot of money. It might be better to aim for a college in an area with lower cost of living. Paying for graduate degrees out of pocket or through loans can be brutal.

Since financial aid is hard to come by, you may end up having to take a job teaching in higher education for the discount. It can also be difficult for international students with all the visa struggles involved. So working as a professor can pull double duty in that regard. If you want to do research, make sure the school’s research areas align with yours. Ask directly about what research grants might be available to you. Make sure you are confident in your school’s intention to help when it comes to financial support.

Is it best to get my doctorate in the same subject as my master’s or should I pick a different subject?

Generally speaking this doesn’t matter so much. It mostly depends on what your aims are. If you want to work in curriculum research or educational research, then curriculum design is a good choice. If you want to become a principle or college administrator, educational leadership is a good choice. In education your graduate degrees don’t really affect which doctoral programs are open to you.

You should be able to gain sufficient financial assistance as long as you use the strategies talked about earlier. So, you won’t hurt yourself by choosing a different area of study from your master’s degree. However, you may be able to cut out some coursework if you do select a doctorate in the same subject.

So really the question is, do you want to pivot to a different area of education, or dive deeper into your area of expertise?

Is student health insurance available to doctoral students?

Student health insurance coverage is available to graduate students. What insurance coverage you have access to may differ depending on your status. Graduate students who work as teaching assistants or professors are employees. So they would likely qualify for employee insurance. Those who are students only are usually provided student health insurance coverage. However, this may only be the case if the school requires students to have it. You should check with your school to be sure.

There’s one thing that most doctoral candidates have in common whether they’re studying:

• business education
• school administration

Dedicating four or more years to PhD or EdD study without a full-time teaching salary is financially draining. Taking on graduate assistantships can help afford tuition while fine-tuning your teaching skills in the college classroom. Scholarships and fellowships will also provide free gift aid to minimize your student loan debt. In addition to partial, need-based institutional scholarships offered every year, the Johns Hopkins School of Education encourages future students to consider several federal and state grant opportunities — some of which are designated for specific degree programs here at our school.

Thanks to our generous donors, these scholarships range from $800 to $3,000 per semester, used for tuition expenses. 

Awards are granted yearly and are for fall and spring semesters only. Eligibility revolves around full admission, enrollment and satisfactory academic conduct. They are also contingent on an annual application process and are not automatically renewed. There are various federal, state, and private grant opportunities as well.

Institutional Scholarships

Through the generosity of our donors, our endowed scholarship awards range on average from $800 to $3,000 per semester and are applied to tuition expenses beginning in the fall semester. Please note that all awards are designated for fall or spring semesters only. Awards designated for a designated semester may not be transferred to another semester.

Please note that the following student groups and statuses are not eligible to receive endowed scholarships:

• International students (non-U.S. citizens/ permanent residents).
• Students enrolled as part of the Teach For America / TNTP Program.
• Students enrolled under non-degree, Graduate Special Student status.
• Students enrolled for under 4.5 credits per semester or students who are completing their last semester
• Full-time employees (spouses or dependents) of JHU who are eligible for tuition benefits

The Office of Student Enrollment and Account Management (SEAM) works cross-functionally to provide support with financial aid, student accounts, and registration.

SOE Endowed Scholarship Deadlines and Awards

About Institutional Scholarships

• Scholarship awards are granted to candidates who are offered full admission to the SOE and are currently enrolled students, who are registered in a minimum of 4.5 credits, and who meet satisfactory academic and student conduct standards as defined by the academic catalog and/or the student’s program of study.
• Scholarship awards are not transferable from one academic year to the next. Awards are determined each academic year and scholarships are not automatically renewed from year to year. Students must submit a scholarship application for each year enrolled, along with a FAFSA form and SOE planned enrollment form, to be considered for scholarship aid.
• Scholarship awards do not cover dropped courses. Any scholarship applied to a dropped course will be reversed, at which point any outstanding course charges/tuition liability will have to be paid through another source.
• Should any revisions to your scholarship amount take place over the course of the academic year, you will receive an updated Financial Aid Award Letter.
• SOE reserves the right to change without notice any programs, policies, and requirements related to institutional scholarships.
• SOE Endowed Scholarships are not awarded in the summer term.
• All SOE Endowed Scholarship recipients are required to write and submit a thank-you letter to the scholarship donor.
• If you transfer to a different program within the SOE.
• If you defer your enrollment to a future semester or academic year.
• If you do not enroll in the term for which you have been admitted.
• If you receive a scholarship from an external funding source or if proof of need based on assets and income listed on the FAFSA does not meet the criteria of need.
• If you do not meet satisfactory academic or student conduct standards.

Committed to addressing the national shortage of trained educators and reducing the financial burden on our early-career teachers and counselors, faculty at the School of Education have won significant grants to support our students in high-need areas.

In addition to substantial tuition support, many of these degree-specific grants offer an additional stipend and/or professional development opportunities. Programs include our MEd for Teaching Professionals, or TeachingWell; MS in Counseling, School Counseling concentration; MS in Special Education, Mild-to-Moderate concentration; and the Post-Master’s Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

• RESET: For students enrolled in the MS in Counseling, School Counseling concentration

AmeriCorps Education Awards

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a post-service benefit received by individuals who complete terms of national service in approved AmeriCorps programs. Please visit the AmeriCorps website for more information.

TEACH Grants

Students who intend to teach in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families may wish to consider applying for the federal TEACH Grant . Students interested in applying for the TEACH Grant are required to submit the School of Education Request for Federal TEACH Grant to their academic advisor for approval.

Maryland Scholarships

Maryland residents may be considered for legislative scholarships and Educational Assistance Awards. See the Maryland Higher Education Commission website for details.

Washington, D.C. Tuition Assistance Grants

Residents of the District of Columbia may be eligible for the DC Tuition Assistance Grant Program. See the DC State Superintendent of Education website for more information.

Please note, to be eligible for federal and state aid, you must:

• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
• Not owe a refund on a federal grant or be in default on a federal education loan
• Not have a drug conviction for an offense that occurred while you were receiving federal student aid (such as grants, loans, or work-study)
• Be admitted prior to the first day of classes for the semester in which you receive aid; students admitted in mid-term will become eligible for federal aid the following semester

The ABCs of Funding

UB's tuition and fees rank among the lowest and most competitive in the nation. This means you can receive a world-class education without the burden of excessive debt—making your degree an even more valuable investment. A range of financial opportunities, including fellowships, scholarships, and other forms of assistance are available. These awards are primarily based on academic achievement, leadership qualities, and other merit-based criteria. Financial awards do not require you to demonstrate need, allowing you to qualify based solely on your accomplishments and potential. This ensures that a high-quality education remains accessible, so you can focus on reaching your goals without worrying about overwhelming expenses.

Assistantships & Fellowships

Assistantships and fellowships provide tuition scholarships and stipends for teaching, conducting research or doing administrative work. These positions require about 20 hours of work weekly.

Who’s Eligible? 

Students who apply to the following PhD programs are eligible for assistantships and fellowships:

Graduate assistant positions in the Graduate School of Education are offered annually to academically admissible students in PhD programs. All students who apply to the select programs listed above are considered for these positions.

Process of Award Consideration

• Students apply to an eligible program by the application deadline. Most programs have December 1 or January 1 deadlines. Please check the program page for specific information.
• Around 6-8 weeks following the deadline, students who are academically admissible receive admission letters. This is typically around early February.
•  1-2 weeks later, first round funding offers are communicated to students. This is around mid-February. If you do not receive a funding offer, and were admitted academically, you are in consideration for any funding offer that becomes available.
• In most cases, students are given until April 15 to accept or decline their funding offer. As these decisions are made, subsequent students are communicated with regarding any new funding that may become available.
• Throughout this process, any program-specific or faculty-grant specific funding offers may be communicated to students as well. These are typically awarded outside of this process, in consultation with program faculty. If additional information is needed from a student, they will be contacted directly.

Assistantships

2024-25 Available Graduate Assistantships for PhD Students

The Graduate School of Education will offer 20 graduate assistantships for students applying to PhD programs for the 2024-25 academic year. A tuition scholarship for 9 credits at the standard graduate tuition rate and applicable fees are included.

There are two funding levels:

• Eight assistantships available at $23,000 each
• Twelve assistantships (that include fellowship support) available at $38,000 each

These positions, when awarded, are guaranteed for 4 years.

PhD students who earn assistantships

• Assist faculty with their research projects, gaining hands-on, real-time research experience. 
• Teach in the classroom.  
• Perform service and work in the community.  

Graduate assistantships provide

• A tuition scholarship for 9 credits at the standard graduate tuition rate. 
• A 10-month stipend. Stipend amounts vary by assistant type. 
• Enrollment in the Student Employee Health Insurance Plan. 

Eligible students receive credit in their student accounts for the following fees

• Comprehensive Fee 
• Academic Excellence and Success fee (ACES)
• Student Activity Fee 
• International Student Fee (matriculated international students only) 

Fellowships

UB offers three campus-wide fellowship programs for graduate students. All incoming PhD applicants are considered for Schomburg and Presidential Fellowships; students must apply to receive a Graduate School Fellowship. 

Schomburg Fellowship

Underrepresented students pursuing full-time graduate study at UB may be eligible for the Arthur A. Schomburg Fellowship. The award is aimed at U.S. citizens or permanent residents who will contribute to the diversity of the student body of the university, especially if they have overcome a disadvantage or other impediment to success in higher education. Academic units may give consideration to students who are of a race or ethnicity that is underrepresented in its graduate or professional programs but may not make awards solely on that basis.  

In addition to their diversity background, nominees must meet the following eligibility criteria:  

• Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4-point scale). 
• Planned full-time enrollment during the award period.  

Presidential Fellowship

The best graduate students are in demand. UB’s Presidential Scholarship Program is meant to attract outstanding candidates to Buffalo. Nominees must be new PhD applicants and appointed as full teaching, graduate or research assistants.  Nominees must also meet at least one of the following academic criteria upon admission:

• A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.40 or higher; OR
• A combined score of 1,270 or higher on the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the “old” GRE General Test (the version offered prior to August 1, 2011) and a score of 4.5 or higher on the Analytical Writing component of that test; OR
• A combined score of 313 or higher on the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the revised/new version of the GRE General Test (that was introduced world-wide on August 1, 2011) and a score of 4.5 or higher on the Analytical Writing component of that test; OR
• A score on the relevant GRE Subject Test that is at, or above, 75th percentile for that test’s administration 

The Graduate School Fellowship

At least 20 outstanding graduate students are selected annually for this program.

Nominees must be new PhD applicants and appointed as full teaching, graduate or research assistants. 

Scholarships and Awards

Enrolled students have access to UB’s Scholarship Portal, your access point to hundreds of campus awards. Log in and complete one application annually to be considered for a range of scholarships.

Once the General Application is completed, you can return regularly to view new scholarship opportunities the system has matched with your academic and financial records along with your responses to the general application questions. There may be supplemental questions to answer to be considered for certain recommended opportunities listed in your dashboard. The general application should be completed annually after July 15 for the next aid year. 

If you are selected for any scholarship opportunities within UB’s Scholarship Portal, you will be notified via email with the next steps you need to take for the funds to be finalized. The awarding process typically begins in the fall term and continues throughout the academic year.

This fund is held by the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo with final decisions made by their board of directors. Students must be a master's degree candidate in the Department of Information Science at the Graduate School of Education and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.  Students must have been born in and be a citizen of the United States with domicile in New York State as well as have financial need.

This award provides support to non-traditional students pursuing a graduate degree in the Graduate School of Education after working several years in a different field.

Judith T. Melamed Memorial Fellowship Endowment Fund

This scholarship supports a student pursuing a degree in the TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) master’s program or a student pursuing a foreign and second language education doctoral degree. Students should be international and have financial need.

Delbert Mullens "Thinking Outside the Box" Award

Must be a Graduate School of Education PhD student graduating during the current academic year. Seeking students who demonstrate individual creativity, exceptional flexibility and cooperative & inclusive spirit. Must complete the FAFSA, have financial need and be a graduate of a Western New York high school or lived in Western New York for at least five (5) years prior to undergraduate graduation. Preference given to underrepresented students.

Jonathan D. Ramos Endowment Award

This award supports students pursuing a degree in mental health counseling. Preference is given to students who are active in any community/school program.

Dr. Thomas Ramming Award Fund

This award supports students participating in the K-12 Leadership Initiative for Tomorrow’s Schools (LIFTS) preparation program.

A. Benjamin and Helen Ravin Scholarship Fund

Established in 2001 by the estate of Helen Ravin. Must be a student majoring in Information Science in the Graduate School of Education. Must complete the FAFSA and/or have documented financial need.

This fellowship supports underrepresented minority students pursuing a doctoral degree in educational administration from the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy.

This scholarship supports students in the Department of Information Science. Preference given to students who have financial need and have demonstrated academic excellence.

• Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund : The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund is a nonprofit organization focused on social change. Its scholarship program gives up to $15,000 to graduate students that plan to use their degrees to advocate against racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of oppression.
• Foster G. McGaw Graduate Student Scholarship : Awarded by the American College of Healthcare Executives , this scholarship gives recipients up to $5,000. It’s for students in their final year of a healthcare management graduate program.
• American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation : The ASHFoundation scholarship offers awards of $5,000 for those who are enrolled in a communication sciences and disorders graduate program.

Grants for Grad School

While scholarships are usually based on past achievements, grants are awarded based on your financial need. As a graduate student, you may be eligible for federal or state grants, and some nonprofit organizations issue grants as well. For example:

• American Association of University Women : Through the Career Development Grant , women going to graduate school to advance their careers or change fields can get up to $12,000. To qualify, the applicant must be studying education, health, medical sciences or the social sciences.
• TEACH Grant : With a federal TEACH Grant , you can get up to $4,000 per year to pay for your graduate degree. However, you must commit to teaching in a high-need subject for at least four years in an elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students. Otherwise, your grant is converted into a student loan and must be repaid with interest.
• California State University Grant Program : This program gives eligible graduate students that are California residents up to $7,176 to pay for their degrees. Awards are determined by financial need and the degree you’re pursuing.

Fellowships for Graduate Students

Fellowships are often awarded based on your future potential, rather than your past achievements. Issued by government agencies, companies and nonprofit organizations, fellowships are designed to give you the funding you need to advance your career or complete your research. Here are a few to consider:

• Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowship : The Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowship program is for first-year MBA students pursuing a summer associate position with the company. Students must be Black, Hispanic or Latino, Native American or identify as women. Fellowship recipients will get $35,000 on top of their summer associate salary.
• Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship : The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship is for immigrants and the children of immigrants that the organization believes will make significant contributions to society or culture. Fellows receive up to $90,000 over two years.
• National Science Foundation Fellowship : The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program recruits individuals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Past recipients include over 40 Nobel Laureates. It’s a five-year award program totaling $138,000 in financial assistance.

Grants vs. Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are two types of aid that usually don’t have to be repaid, but they work differently. Here’s how they compare.

When To Apply for Scholarships and Grants

Begin applying for scholarships and grants as soon as possible. Ideally, you’ll back about these awards before the school year starts (or early on) so you can determine if you have any funding gaps.

The actual deadlines for scholarships and grants can vary. Most scholarship deadlines fall between October and May, according to Scholarship.com. Since scholarships may involve writing essays and submitting recommendations, it’s best not to wait to apply.

You’ll need to complete the FAFSA for state, federal and institutional aid. The application opens each October before the start of the school year and closes in June of that school year. For example, the 2023-2024 school year application opened on October 1, 2022 and closes on June 30, 2024.

• Unsubsidized Direct loans. Unsubsidized Direct loans are federal loans for undergraduate and graduate students not based on financial need. These loans come with fixed interest rates and can qualify for loan forgiveness programs and income-driven repayment (IDR) plans like the new Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan.

EKU’s Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies is a terminal degree that  prepares individuals with an enhanced understanding and practical capacity regarding human learning, educational institutions, and the interaction of the larger society with educational, financial, and governmental entities and processes. Career Info

Post secondary education administrators’ duties depend on the size of their college or university. Small schools often have small staffs that take on many different responsibilities, but larger schools may have different offices for each of these functions.

Postsecondary education administrators can work in admissions, the registrar’s office, or as provosts or academic deans.

Postsecondary teachers, often referred to as professors or faculty, specialize in a variety of subjects and fields. At colleges and universities, professors are organized into departments by degree field, such as history, science, or business. A professor may teach one or more courses within that department. For example, a mathematics professor may teach calculus, statistics, and a graduate seminar on a topic related to polynomials.

Postsecondary teachers’ duties vary, often based on the size of their employing institution. In large colleges or universities, they may teach courses, conduct research or experiments, publish original research, apply for grants to fund their research, or supervise graduate teaching assistants. In small colleges and universities or in community colleges, they may spend most of their time teaching courses and working with students.

Ed.D. Concentration in Leadership, Policy Studies, and Social Justice P-12 and postsecondary leaders are charged to direct broad educational programs that increase excellence and equity as measured by outcomes. Educational entities and organizations need professionals who use current knowledge and possess strong leadership skills to design and administer programs that can improve teaching and learning. Moreover, they need leaders who know about and respond to the specific challenges and strengths of the communities they serve. Students will acquire skills to conduct and successfully apply research and gain enhanced practical capacity with regard to human learning, educational institutions, and the interaction of the larger society with educational, financial, and governmental processes. Course work will be built on a knowledge base that reflects current research, theory, and practice.

Ed.D. Concentration in Curriculum Leadership for Social Justice Curriculum leadership for social justice is geared for devoted practitioners committed to addressing problems facing leaders in the field of education. This degree concentration aims to develop scholars who wish to assume leadership roles in educational institutions, such as school or district curriculum leadership. Students will research and implement a diverse range of curricular trends focused on equity and social justice. Doctoral faculty will serve as mentors in helping students create doctoral dissertations that meet their professional goals.

Kentucky’s Rank System

Teachers in Kentucky are held to a three-tiered rank system. By completing additional education programs, teachers are able to advance their rank, leading to increased salary and promotion potential.

After completing a bachelor’s degree and earning a provisional teaching certificate, educators enter the field with  Rank III  eligibility.

By completing a 30-hour master’s degree, either to enhance competency in the initial teaching area or to add certification in a new area, educators are eligible to advance to  Rank II .

Educators choosing to complete 30 hours above their Rank II are eligible to advance to  Rank I . It is highly recommended that these 30 hours be taken as part of a second master’s program as Rank is not typically recognized outside of Kentucky. Rank I is the highest level attainable and typically carries the highest salary and promotion potential.

The Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) is responsible for conferring rank and rank changes. EKU prepares educators with the required coursework and experience but does not award initial rank or changes to rank.

Education Program Disciplines

EKU’s graduate education programs are divided into three disciplines.

Curriculum and Instruction The department of curriculum and instruction is responsible for program advisement and development in elementary education, middle grades education, gifted education, literacy, secondary education, and library science. Programs of study may lead to the Master of Arts in Education degree, Rank II, Rank I, endorsements and certifications. At this time, EKU Online offers options in all areas except secondary education. Educational Leadership and Policy Studies The department of educational leadership and policy studies is responsible for preparing highly effective professional leaders who will develop productive environments for academic excellence and equity. Special Education Our Master of Arts in Special Education degrees prepare educators to work in a variety of capacities with persons with disabilities. Earning a master’s degree allows educators to improve their current skillsets and subject knowledge or expand their areas of expertise in the field of special education. Graduates are poised to advance their education career and increase their earning potential.

Students may transfer up to 12 hours of credit from accredited institutions. Please note that a minimum of 15 credit hours in this degree program must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.

Admission to the Doctor of Education program is based upon the following entrance requirements:

Earned a master’s degree in education or a related field.

Must have professional experience (preference will be given to those with leadership experience) The applicant should note that the decision to admit students to the doctoral program is a collective judgment of the faculty and represents their determination of the likelihood of the applicant’s success in all major phases of the degree program. These judgments take into account the applicant’s professional experiences, communication and thinking skills, and other relevant capabilities. Thus, an applicant is not automatically admitted on the basis of meeting the minimal criteria.

A completed application packet includes the following:

• Completed graduate school and concentration applications
• Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work
• Resumé of professional experience
• Score reports from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test if the graduate GPA is less than 3.5
• At least three letters of recommendation—including at least one each from a peer, a supervisor, and a college/university faculty member.
• Writing sample from previous graduate program that exemplifies applicant’s writing and research skills

American Fellowships

Funding:  $8,000–$50,000 Opens: September 3 Deadline:  November 15

The American Fellowship program began in 1888, a time when women were discouraged from pursuing an education. It is AAUW’s largest fellowship program and the oldest non-institutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States.  

AAUW American Fellowships support women scholars who are pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated based on scholarly excellence; quality and originality of project design; and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research.  

Dissertation: The purpose of the American Dissertation Fellowship is to offset a scholar’s living expenses while they complete their dissertation. F ellows must use the award for the final year of writing the dissertation. Applicants must have completed all course work, passed all preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposals or plans by the preceding November. Students holding fellowships for writing a dissertation in the year prior to the AAUW fellowships year are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study. Scholars engaged in science, technology, engineering , and math fields or those researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply.  

Postdoctoral: The primary purpose of the American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship is to increase the number of women in tenure-track faculty positions and to promote equity for women in higher education. This fellowship ’s purpose is to assist the candidate in obtaining tenure and further promotions by enabling them to spend a year pursuing independent research. Tenured professors are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study. Scholars engaged in science, technology, engineering , and math fields or those researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply.  

Publication: The Short-Term Research Publication Grants provide support to scholars to prepare research manuscripts for publication. AAUW’s funding priority is for applicants whose work supports the vision of AAUW: to break through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance. Time must be available for eight consecutive weeks of final writing and editing in response to issues raised in critical reviews. These fellowships can be for both tenure-track and part-time faculty, and to new and established researchers. The purpose is to assist the candidate in obtaining tenure and other promotions. Tenured professors are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study. Scholars engaged in science, technology, engineering , and math fields or those researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply.

Dissertation Fellowship: $25,000

Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship: $50,000

Short-Term Research Publication Grant: $8,000

April 15, 2025 Notification of decision emailed to all applicants. AAUW is not able to honor requests for earlier notification.

Eligibility

Applicants of all American Fellowships must meet the following criteria:  

• Members of the AAUW Board of Directors, committees, panels, task forces and staff, including current interns, are not eligible to apply for AAUW’s fellowships and grants. A person holding a current award is eligible for election or appointment to boards, committees, panels and task forces.  
• American Fellowship candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  
• Fellowships are open to women, including people who identify as women, in all fields of study at an accredited institution of higher education. AAUW will make final decisions about what constitutes eligible institutions.  
• Applicants may not apply for another AAUW national fellowship or grant in the same year.  
• Distance learning/online programs: Fellowships support traditional classroom-based courses of study at colleges or universities. This fellowship program does not provide funding for distance learning or online programs or for degrees heavily dependent on distance learning components. Final decisions about what constitutes distance learning under these fellowships will be made by AAUW. AAUW will accept applications from applicants who are temporarily studying remotely due to COVID-19 precautions at their institution.  
• American Fellowships are not open to previous recipients of any AAUW national fellowship or grant (not including branch or local awards or Community Action Grants).

A pplicants of Dissertation Fellowships must also meet the following criteria :  

• The American Dissertation Fellowship must be used for the final year of writing the dissertation. Applicants must have completed all coursework, passed all preliminary exams, and had the dissertation research proposal or plan approved by November 1, 2023 . The doctoral degree/dissertation must be completed between April 1 and June 30, 2025 . Degree conferral must be between April 1 and September 15, 2025 .  
• Dissertation Fellows are not required to study in the U.S.  
• Students already holding a fellowship or grant for the purpose of supporting their final year of writing or completing the dissertation the year before the fellowship year are not eligible to apply for the American Dissertation Fellowship.  
• The Dissertation Fellowship is intended for applicants who are completing their first doctoral degree.  
• Applicants may apply up to two times for a fellowship for the same dissertation project.  

A pplicants of Postdoctoral Fellowships must also meet the following criteria :  

• American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship applicants must hold a Ph.D., Ed.D., D.B.A., M.F.A., J.D., M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M., D.S.W., or M.P.H. at the time of application.  
• Tenured professors are not eligible.  

Applicants of Publication Grants must also meet the following criteria :  

• American Short-Term Research Publication Grant applicants must hold a Ph.D., Ed.D., D.B.A., M.F.A., J.D., M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M., D.S.W., or M.P.H. at the time of application.  
• Tenured professors are not eligible.
• American Short-Term Research Publication Grants are for tenure-track, part-time, and temporary faculty, as well as new and established researchers at universities. Scholars with strong publication records should seek funding elsewhere. Applicants must have time available for eight consecutive weeks of final manuscript preparation. While many recipients, especially full-time faculty members, will use the award s during the summer, recipients may use the funds at any time during the award year. Applicants must demonstrate that the support will result in a reduction of their ongoing work-related activities during the eight-week period .  
• American Short-Term Research Publication Grants are not for preliminary research. Activities undertaken during the grant period can include drafting, editing, or modifying manuscripts; replicating research components; responding to issues raised through critical review; and other initiatives to increase the likelihood of publication.  
• The grantee must be listed as the sole author, senior author, first author, or an author of equivalent significance.  

Selection Criteria and Application Review

The panel meets once a year to review applications for funding. Awards are based on the criteria outlined here. The panel’s recommendations are subject to final approval by AAUW. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis according to funds available in a given fiscal year.  

To ensure a fair review process, AAUW does not comment on the deliberations of the award panels. AAUW does not provide evaluations of applications. No provisions exist for reconsidering fellowship proposals.

Applications and supporting documents become the sole property of AAUW and will not be returned or held for another year.  

In selecting fellowship recipients, the following criteria will be considered:  

• Applicant’s scholarly excellence.  
• Quality of project design.  
• Originality of project.  
• Scholarly significance of project to the discipline.  
• Feasibility of project and proposed schedule.  
• Qualifications of applicant.  
• Applicant’s commitment to women’s issues in the profession/community.  
• Applicant’s mentoring of other women.  
• Applicant’s teaching experience.  
• Potential of applicant to make a significant contribution to the field.  
• Applicant is from an underrepresented racial/ethnic background.  
• Applicant will be in an underrepresented area of the country and/or type of university other than a top-level research institution during the award year.  
• Financial need.  

The primary criterion for fellowship awards is scholarly excellence. Applications are reviewed by distinguished scholars and should be prepared accordingly.  

American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship and American Short-Term Research Publication Grant: When comparing proposals of equal merit, the review panel will give special consideration to women holding junior academic appointments who are seeking research leave, women who have held the doctorate for at least three years, and women whose educational careers have been interrupted. Preference will also be given to projects that are not simply a revision of the applicant’s doctoral dissertation and applicants whose work supports the vision of AAUW: to break through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance.  

Regulations

American Fellowships funds are available for:  

• Educational expenses (American Dissertation Fellowship and American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship only).  
• Living expenses.  
• Dependent child care.  
• Travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars that does not exceed 10 percent of the fellowship total (American Dissertation Fellowship and American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship only).  

Additionally, American Short-Term Publication Grant funds are available for:  

• Clerical and technical support.  
• Research assistance related to verification (not basic research).  
• Office supplies, postage, copying and related expenses.  
• Journal fees.  

American Fellowships funds are not available for:  

• Purchase of equipment.  
• Indirect costs.  
• Research assistants.  
• Previous expenditures, deficits, or repayment of loans.  
• Publication costs (except for American Short-Term Publication Grants).  
• Institutional (overhead) costs.  
• Tuition for dependent’s education.  
• Tuition for coursework that is in addition to credits required for maintaining full-time status while completing a dissertation.  
• Extended field research (applicable to American Dissertation Fellowships only).  

Additionally, American Short-Term Research Publication Grants funds are not available for:  

• Salary increase.  
• Doctoral dissertation research or writing.  

AAUW regards the acceptance of a fellowship as a contract requiring fulfillment of the following terms:  

• All American Fellowship recipients are required to sign a contract as acceptance of the award. Retain these instructions as they will become part of the fellowship contract if the applicant is awarded a fellowship.  
• An AAUW American Fellow is expected to pursue their project full time during the funding period (July 1–June 30). No partial fellowships are awarded. Fellowships may not be deferred.  
• American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellows and American Short-Term Research Publication Grantees cannot pursue a degree during the award period.  
• Any major changes in plans for the award year must have prior written approval from AAUW.  
• AAUW must be notified promptly of any change in the status of an application resulting from acceptance of another award.  
• Stipends are made payable to fellows, not to institutions.  
• The determination of whether there is a tax obligation associated with the receipt of an AAUW award is the sole responsibility of the applicant. Specific questions regarding income tax matters should be addressed with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, the applicant’s financial aid office or a personal tax adviser. AAUW cannot provide tax advice. AAUW is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charity founded for educational purposes.

• Dissertation Fellowship applicants: Applicant must provide two recommendations from the applicant’s advisers, colleagues or others well acquainted with the applicant, their project and their teaching. One of the two recommendations must be from the applicant’s dissertation advisor.
• Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship applicants: Provide two recommendations from the applicant’s advisers, colleagues or others well acquainted with their project or work.
• Short-Term Research Publication Grant applicants: Provide two recommendations from the applicant’s advisers, colleagues or others well acquainted with the applicant, their project/work and their teaching.
• Dissertation Fellowship applicants: Submit transcripts for all graduate work and courses listed in the application. Transcripts must show grades for coursework transferred in. If the transcript shows transfer courses and credits without grades, a transcript from the institution where the courses were taken is required. If you studied at an institution that does not require coursework or provide transcripts, an institutional letter stating that is required.
• Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship and Short-Term Publication Grant applicants: Proof of degree: Submit transcript(s)** or original letter showing proof of a Ph.D., Ed.D., M.F.A., J.D., M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M., D.B.A., D.S.W., or M.P.H. degree.
• Dissertation Fellowship applicants: Dissertation certification form: Submit the form verifying the completion of all required coursework and qualifying examinations for the doctorate and approval of your dissertation research proposal (plan of research) signed by an institutional officer. No substitutions for this form will be accepted.
• Dissertation applicants: If you will conduct your project at an institution other than your own during the fellowship year, submit the form that indicates you have approval from the institution and the authority with whom the work will be done to conduct the research, laboratory or office space, and library privileges during the fellowship year. No substitutions for this form will be accepted. If you will conduct your project at your home institution, no project institution form is needed.
• Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship and Short-Term Publication Grant applicants: Submit the form that indicates you have approval from the proposed institution and the authority with whom the work will be done to conduct the research and have institutional affiliation, laboratory or office space, and library privileges during the fellowship year. No substitutions for this form will be accepted.

*A certified English translation is required for all components provided in a foreign language. Translations must bear a mark of certification or official signature that the translation is true and complete.

**All transcripts provided must include the applicant’s full name, the school’s name, all courses and all grades, as well as any other information requested in in the application instructions.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) with Science Education Institute (SEI) and Griffith University PhD Scholarships

The Department of Science and Technology with Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) and Griffith University have established a joint funding program to support suitably qualified applicants to enrol in the Doctor of Philosophy program at Griffith University.

Scholarship details

Griffith will provide tuition fee scholarships to cover the full cost of tuition for up to three (3) years with a possible six (6) month extension, as well as Overseas Students Health Cover for 42 months.

DOST-SEI will arrange for the following support to be provided:

• living stipend (the living stipend will be a minimum value of approximately AUD 3,000 monthly for up to three (3) years with a possible six (6) month extension
• roundtrip airfare
• pre-departure expenses
• relocation allowance
• book allowance

Initial screening and recruitment will be the responsibility of DOST-SEI and will involve the nomination of candidates from DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research (DOST-PCAARRD) and DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) or future planned projects. Candidates may be required to meet the DOST-PCAARRD and DOST-PCIEERD internal guidelines for satisfying project prerequisites. The favoured areas of research for this program are under the themes of soil ecology and water management, ecology, and other related fields, and in connection with existing projects supported by DOST-PCAARD and DOST-PCIEERD. Other areas can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants nominated by DOST-SEI will be eligible to apply for PhD admission and scholarship at Griffith, with final selection to be made by Griffith.

Applicants must meet all relevant Griffith academic entry requirements , including the prescribed level of  English language proficiency for PhD admission and scholarships at Griffith. Candidates are required to hold a bachelor degree with first-class honours or second-class honours (Division A), or be regarded by Griffith as having an equivalent level of attainment, as specified on the  Equivalent qualifications for HDR program admission webpage.

Suitably qualified candidates supported by DOST-SEI will then apply for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at Griffith.

Griffith will assess all applications in accordance with its PhD admission requirements, including academic performance standards and English language proficiency requirements:
