Admissions counselors help colleges recruit, screen, and approve prospective students for admission to colleges, universities, and private secondary schools. If you’re seeking a job as an admissions counselor, your goal is to show hiring managers that you have the skills, experience, and qualifications for the role.

Here’s how to write an admissions counselor cover letter and resume that will impress the hiring team and help you land the job.

People skills are important in this job because these counselors typically interview students as part of the admissions process. Make sure that your cover letter and resume demonstrate that you are adept at communicating, listening, and collaborating with team members.

Tips for Writing an Admissions Counselor Cover Letter and Resume

To make your application materials stand out from the competition:

Follow Instructions

Job listings  typically include specifics about how to apply for the position, including how to submit your materials and what file types to use. Pay attention to these details. If the employer wants to receive your cover letter and resume as attachments and you cut and paste them into a message, for example, you’re unlikely to receive an invitation to interview.

Use the Right Keywords

Analyze the job listing to look for keywords that describe the skills, abilities, and experience the employer is seeking. Then, match your qualifications to the job by using the same keywords in your application materials.

Review Sample Cover Letters

Look at cover letter samples before writing your own. These templates can help you compose a message that’s easy to read and persuasive to hiring teams.

Remember to customize your cover letter for each job. Hiring managers want candidates who are enthusiastic about this position, not just any job in the field.

Use the Right Format for an Email Cover Letter

If you're sending your cover letter via email, list your name and the job title in the subject line of the email message:

Subject:  Admissions Counselor Position - Your Name

Include your contact information in your email signature, and don't list the employer’s contact information. Start your email message with the salutation.

Decenber 6, 2021

Laura Lau Director, Human Resources Acme Medical 123 Business Rd. Business City, NY 54321

Dear Ms. Lau,

I would like to express my strong interest in the admissions counselor position at ABC University’s School of Business, as listed on highereducationjobs.com. I am confident that my experience as an admissions counselor and my abilities as a project manager make me an ideal candidate for the position.

I have been working in admissions for the past five years and am therefore extremely confident in my ability to meet your requirements. As an admissions counselor for XYZ College, I recruit, process, and evaluate over 8,500 applicants each year. By thoroughly analyzing candidates and conducting dozens of informational sessions and seminars, I successfully contributed to the rise in student retention by over 15% this past year. I am also particularly familiar with MBA admissions and recruiting, having worked as a graduate assistant in the Greenfield University Business School. I am thus a skilled admissions counselor who is familiar with your particular needs.

I also have the project management experience that you request in your job application. For example, I am currently responsible for organizing and overseeing XYZ College’s annual Welcome Accepted Candidates Day. This job involves selecting and managing caterers, event spaces, professors, and student volunteers. I have successfully run this event for the past two years, and therefore know I have the attention to detail and commitment to quality that you require in an admissions counselor.

I am confident that my years of experience in admissions (particularly business school admissions) and my skill as a project manager would make me an asset to your fine admissions team at ABC University’s School of Business. I have enclosed my resume and will contact you next week to see if we might find a time to speak together. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

Admissions Counselor Cover Letter (plain text)

Dear Dr. Das,

I am writing to you today to express my interest in the position of Admissions Counselor at the University of Illinois School of Agricultural Consumer and Environmental Sciences. As a tenured professional with a background in agricultural business administration, ag science, and environmental science programs, I am confident that I will be able to provide prospective students with the assistance they need.

During the past four years, I have been working as the lead admissions counselor at the Elk City Research College of Agriculture and Forestry. Each year, I work to interview and process more than 5,000 applications submitted by students from around the world. I carefully analyze each application with the assistance of my staff to ensure that students who are qualified and will benefit from admission into the program are accepted. Because of this, the school has seen a 25% increase in student retention. The methodologies I have spearheaded have been adopted by other colleges and departments as well.

In addition to assisting new applicants, I also oversee several projects to ensure student success. This includes coordinating the welcome weekend at the beginning of each semester and managing the student mentorship program. Each of these things requires that I apply the following skills:

  • Data analysis
  • Communication
  • Coordination
  • Problem-solving
  • Organization
  • Time management

I am passionate about higher education and helping students achieve success. Additionally, I have a strong connection with agricultural and environmental education as I used to be an adjunct lecturer in Agri sciences at the University of Wyoming.

The University of Illinois has a world-renown ag program. I am very excited at the prospect of joining your admissions team. I’m available for remote interviews at your convenience. I can also arrange an in-person meeting if that is preferred.

How to Write a Cover Letter for Admissions Counselor Positions

Admission counselors can come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are tenured educational administrators. Others come from academic or teaching positions, whereas some also move into the field after holding several corporate jobs in the industry.

Therefore, your cover letter should first explain the type of background you have. Then elaborate on your core competencies and relevant skills, contextualized by recent achievements and career highlights.  That’s how the above letter is structured.

To create a similar version, start building a cover letter outline using the below tips.

Provide Specific Details

Put yourself in the position of the hiring manager. They are going through dozens of applications for the position of an admissions counselor. All of these are going to contain letters from applicants claiming they are the best person for the job.

If you want to stand out, you need to prove it. For example, in the letter above the applicant mentions that they increased the student retention rate by 25% and that they processed thousands of applications yearly.

You should mention similar “bragging rights”. For example, can you think of the following?

  • Increased student enrollment rates under your tenure
  • Number of new international student populations recruited
  • Quantity of university promo events organized (with some success metrics)

Include the above tidbits in your cover letter and resume.

Articulate Your Skills

Admission counseling is a non-technical, academic position. Because of this, you may assume that a list of skills isn’t necessary. While it is true that you don’t need to talk about your extensive research skills, you still must present a compelling list of hard and soft skills .

Relevant hard skills include knowledge of specific admissions, collaboration, and communication software the institution is using, as well as knowledge related to the college specialty (Agriculture in the case of the above example).

Your list of soft skills, in turn, should offer a good mix of organizational, self-management , andinterpersonal skills.

Personalize Every Cover Letter

Even if every resume and cover letter you send is for the same position, only at a different school, you must send a personalized cover letter. Any recruiter worth their salary will see right through a generic cover letter you have sent to every other university.

Take the extra few minutes to personalize each cover letter. Mention something unique about the opportunity, the school, or the local community. This will help you make a personal connection, and show you have done a bit of research.

Final Tip: Add Your Contact Info And Professional Social Media

Is your contact information up to date? Are you using the best email address? What about your LinkedIn profile ? Give a potential employer plenty of opportunities to learn more about you!

Also, include other social media handles if you are also doing some professional work through them (e.g. sharing college admission tips and/or some thought leadership entries).

Throughout this guide, we’ll provide expert tips to help you create a strong resume highlighting the most engaging aspects of your experience in higher education.

1. Summarize your college admissions counselor qualifications in a dynamic profile

Creating a compelling snapshot of your career as a college admissions counselor is the best way to draw in the reader. Start by listing your job title, years of experience, and three to four specializations that align with the job posting.

For example, if you excel at explaining admissions and financial aid topics in easy-to-understand terms for families, include this in your profile. If you are especially resourceful in connecting potential students to academic information, highlight this in your summary.

Profile Example #1

Profile example #2, 2. create a powerful list of your college admissions counselor experience.

To craft a results-driven professional experience section, create bullet points that emphasize your career achievements rather than job responsibilities. Colleges and other higher education institutions are interested in results.

As a college admissions counselor, display the value of your contributions by incorporating data, metrics, and figures that demonstrate your success. Also, consider emphasizing your ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and translate complex financial aid and admissions information into accessible language.

3. include education and certifications relevant to college admissions counselors.

In addition to your education, feature any relevant certifications you achieved throughout your career as a college admissions counselor. Although most employers will be more interested in your professional experience, obtaining additional credentials will show your drive to advance your career.

For instance, a National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential from the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) demonstrates a professional commitment to the counseling field with required hours of additional training to elevate your counseling skills.

A Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) highlights your strategic planning skills, along with an ability to manage projects and analyze financial situations, which are all important aspects of college admissions counseling.

4. Make a list of your college admissions counselor-related skills and proficiencies

Most organizations rely on some form of applicant tracking system (ATS) to identify qualified candidates for job openings. To advance your resume past the initial screening process and into a hiring manager’s hands, incorporate keywords from the job posting into your profile, professional experience, and skills sections. Below is a list of key terms and skills you may encounter while applying for college admissions counselor jobs.

Key Skills and Proficiencies
Application essay instruction Career counseling
College affordability College transition planning
Event planning and organizing Procedure improvement
Program development Public speaking and presentations
Reporting and documentation Student and family relations
Student coaching and advising Student financial aid
Team collaboration Test preparation
Workshop facilitation Writing principles and instruction

5. Highlight your organizational skills

As a college admissions counselor, you will help potential students and their families work through the processes required to become a student at the institution. You will likely create reports and documentation, assist with financial aid applications, and offer insights to improve procedures. Highlighting your organizational skills will demonstrate your expertise in managing the many roles required for this position.

6. Showcase your communication skills

Communication is central to your role as a college admissions counselor. For instance, you may be called on for public speaking engagements to share information about your college and to give presentations to prospective students and their families. Workshop facilitation and event planning are also often required in a college admissions counselor role. Additionally, you may have to collaborate cross-functionally while providing students with the resources required to access and advance their education. Many employers look for those who can communicate effectively to different audiences, both internal and external.

How To Pick the Best College Admissions Counselor Resume Template

When selecting a resume template, focus on structure and readability over visuals. Remember, content is the priority — information that explains your expertise and skills. Heavy use of colors and bulky graphics can distract the reader from your content. Choose a template that organizes your content effectively but also fits with your brand. Hiring managers will be more interested in your relevant achievements and qualifications than the style of your template.

How do you align your resume with a college admissions counselor job posting? -

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , jobs for school and career counselors and advisors are projected to grow by 5% from 2021 to 2031, which is slightly faster than average compared to most occupations. This growth is primarily driven by a growing number of higher education institutions opening career centers to help students prepare to enter the workforce. Also, navigating the college admissions process is increasingly difficult for many students and families challenged with the cost of attending college. Schools have a need for college admissions counselors to guide students through the complex process.

Although these job outlook projections are optimistic, still align your resume with each job posting to secure interviews for the most attractive college admissions counselor opportunities. Higher education counseling is a competitive field, and tailoring your document to individual job postings will significantly increase your chances of landing your next job opportunity.

For example, suppose the hiring organization is looking for an expert in college transition planning. In that case, you’d highlight your experience helping students successfully transfer credits and acclimate to campus as they change schools.

What is the best college admissions counselor resume format? -

Most college admissions counselors should use the combination (or hybrid) format. True to its name, this format combines two important features of other resume formats: the chronological format’s experience section, and the functional format’s profile section. (The resume examples on this page all use combination format.)

By fusing these two features, a combination resume offers the best of both worlds. The experience section lets you outline your recent work history – essential information for most employers. At the same time, the profile section lets you display your career highlights at the top, regardless of whether they’re from that work history or another part of your background. As a result, you can present yourself clearly and strategically. With this format, you give hiring managers the best view of your experience and relevant strengths, so they can make an informed decision to call you for an interview.
