The Ultimate Study Music Playlist

This is a playlist of my favorite study music. It’s great for homework, studying for exams, reading, and generally getting crap crossed off my many checklists.

I’ve been working on this playlist for several years, and it contains music (all non-lyrical) from a wide variety of genres and sources, including video game/anime/movie soundtracks. At the moment, it’s got about 240 songs for you to choose from.

Listening on another app? I’ve worked to mirror this study playlist to other services. Check them out below:

  • Spotify Study Music Playlist
  • Apple Music Study Playlist

If you’d like, you can study with me in another tab while this plays. You can also listen to the playlist on YouTube instead of on this page.

By the way – I create my own study music as well! If you’d like to give it a listen, here’s a playlist:

You can also follow me on Spotify or on YouTube if you want to be notified when new tracks are released.

Need even more study music?

Here are a few options.

Brain.fm – Music designed specifically to help you focus more effectively. It works really well for me, and I use it for around 50% of my research, writing, and reading sessions – the other half are mostly done with the playlist above.

Piano Study Playlist – If you’re in the mood for a more consistent playlist, check out this one full of solo piano tracks.

Coffitivity – Sometimes I’m in the mood for ambient noise instead of music, and the sounds of a bustling coffee shop are my personal favorite type.

Noisli – An ambient noise generator that lets you create your own mix using sounds like rain, thunder, fan, and white/brown/pink noise.

More Playlists

Work Vibes – My personal playlist of “getting-stuff-done” music. Most of the tracks here have vocals, so I wouldn’t read or study intently with them. But they’re great for crushing emails, working on design projects, or doing other work where I simply need to execute quickly.

Tom’s Workout Playlist – A collection of the tracks that usually accompany me to the gym.

So, after they eventually did the surgery on me, while I did feel a huge amount of gratitude to be alive, at the same time every moment of the day I was CRYING! Like someone would walk in the room who I hadn’t seen for a while, and I’d just look at them and CRY! And when they’d go ‘What are you crying about?’, I’d be like ‘I don’t KNOW! I’m just really glad to be here, to be alive and to SEE you!’… It was like I was seeing everything with new EYES. Every day I’d go to the window to see if the sun was shining – and if it WAS, I’d have this feeling of OPTIMISM! Like ‘WOW! Top+Ten+Scientifically-Proven+Songs+That+Will+Help+You+to+Study

Top Ten Scientifically-Proven Songs That Will Help You to Study

Back to school means back to late night cram sessions and hours and hours of homework. However, there is one thing that can help all of our restlessness when studying: music. Music can be an amplifier to your emotions, which is why when studying it’s helpful to pick music that will help us to stay calm (because who else feels like graphing parabolas at 12:00 at night?). In the book Why You Love Music by John Powell, he explains that when it comes to situations that need our concentration we tend to take a “Goldilocks” attitude to what we listen to. We want music that isn’t too complex (as to keep us distracted) and we don’t want music that isn’t complex enough as to not keep us focused. So, below are the top ten “just right” songs to help you keep on studying.

  • If you’re into atmospheric calm/nature sounds…
  • Florida Rain Storm – Mother Nature Sound FX

There are entire Spotify playlists dedicated to certain sounds from nature, ensuring that you find the one that helps you through that last paragraph you have to write.

  • For those who want “Music Therapy”…
  • Olancha Farewell – Harold Budd

Harold Budd Work is the “King” of music therapy whose work has been used in films such as White Bird in a Blizzard. Not only has music been proven to reduce stress and anxiety, but it is also now being used to treat depression.

  • If you’re into white noise…
  • White Noise – 200 hz or White Noise – 120% Wide

Hear me out on this one. Without even realizing it we need background noise to keep us focused such as the TV blaring in the next room or a fan blowing air around. White noise strives to maintain that background noise so as to not let silence be a distraction.

  • For those who need the intensity…
  • Enter Sandman – Metallica

Some actually need to intensity to help them study and many have stated that listening to metal songs helps them to stay energized to do homework (just don’t get too angry and shred your homework).

  • If you like indie music…
  • Younger Years – The Milk Carton Kids

Indie folk has gained quite a following in recent years do its emphasis on maintaining a positive and calming vibe. Fans of Bob Dylan will see how this type of music can be impactful not only in its lyrics but in the way it makes people feel more relaxed.

  • If you want something with mellow beats/a slight funk…
  • Bleepers – Dj Spinna

A constant emphasis on the beat and rhythm may help to keep someone focused as the repetition can keep a steady flow, so mellow beats are definitely helpful in staying focused.

  • For those who need something jazzy…
  • Stardust – Gerry Mulligan

Jazz is upbeat and excited which can help with staying motivated while doing work. Anything by Louis Armstrong can do the trick as well, and if you want something with swing then try “Sing, Sing, Sing” by Benny Goodman.

  • If you’re into soft guitar or acoustic music…
  • Deep Forest – Christopher Varela

Some people only need the sounds of one guitar to help them concentrate, so acoustic music, while minimalistic, won’t overwhelm someone if they are heavily trying to focus on something.

  • If you’re into piano/classical music…
  • Sugarcane – Ana Olgica

Classical music overall has been popular for studying since, well, ever. Listening to the music of Mozart and Beethoven is popular in many other aspects of life as well, such as parents who play their compositions while their babies are still in the womb. Many studies claim that listening to classical music can help to raise your IQ by a few points, so maybe pulling up a Mozart compilation will help you achieve that A+ you wanted in math.

  • For the ultimate studying song…
  • Weightless – Macaroni Union

This song was specifically designed with the British Academy of Sound Therapy to induce a trance-like state. Neuroscientists say that it can reduce your anxiety by 65% (Forbes) and this is due to its slow tempo and low tones of the guitar and piano. This song has become so popular for those trying to study that it has even charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Don’t become too entranced though, that chemistry lab isn’t going to get done by itself.

Pump Up Songs

upbeat songs for homework

2. “Lose Yourself” – Eminem

This track is great for both a jog and to get you pumped at the office.

“Sales it's a space where you can lose yourself really easily if you don’t have a clear motivation of why you are doing what you are doing,” says Diego Tibamoso Flechas, a senior manager of sales at HubSpot. “You need to have concrete KPIs and…a clear long-term vision and short-term goals.”

Flechas parts out the following line as a favorite: “Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity/To seize everything you ever wanted. One moment, would you capture it?/Or just let it slip.”

3. “The Final Countdown” – Europe

According to the Pomodoro technique, you're most productive when you work in blocks — typically 25 minutes long — then take a five-minute break. Blast this tune during the first or last five minutes of your work sprints to get your energy levels up.

4. “Bright Future in Sales” – Fountains of Wayne

Every salesperson's anthem, celebrating that victorious moment when the deal is closed.

(It'd be a shame if you had to interrupt your flow to log all of your prospecting activity. If you need a sales tool that works for you and not the other way around, try HubSpot's free CRM today.)

5. “Hungry Like the Wolf” – Duran Duran

Because when you're prospecting, you should be on the hunt - just like a wolf.

6. “Livin' On a Prayer” – Bon Jovi

For the last few days of the month when you need to close deals and create new opportunities at the same time.

7. “Won’t Back Down” – Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers

You won’t close every deal. You may lose clients or face a tough sell. No matter what, it’s essential to keep your head up.

That’s why Eoghan O’Neill, a CMS and operations sales specialist, suggests “Won’t Back Down.”

“Tech Sales can be tough you come across difficult customers, competitors, technical questions, the dreaded ‘no’ word, and many other challenges. But, I won‘t back down. I’ll keep going and get through it,” O’Niell says.

8. “Can't Hold Us (feat. Ray Dalton)” – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Nothing can stop you — not even the ceiling.

9. “Survivor” – Destiny's Child

You‘re a survivor, and you’ll make it through this week!

10. “Celebration” – Kool & the Gang

Sometimes your prospects will pick up the phone, want to talk to you, and be a great fit. After you hang up the phone, play this song. You deserve it.

11. “Welcome to the Jungle” – Guns N' Roses

Growth is a team sport, but prospecting isn‘t. It’s every salesperson for themselves in the jungle of leads ... unless you find one that's not in your territory.

12. “Good as Hell” – Lizzo

Note: explicit lyrics.

Boss up and change your life. This one might be explicit, but pop your headphones in and welcome those feel-good tunes.

13. “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” – Daft Punk

Great motivational songs have catchy beats — a formula that Daft Punk has mastered.

“It's a speedy vibe that gets me moving,” says Rebecca Philipps, a sales manager for HubSpot’s Solutions Partner Program, of the song. “Our work as sales reps is ‘never over,’ as we start with a clean slate every month and constantly look for ways to be ‘better, faster’ (a.k.a more efficient) with our time.”

14. “Honey, I'm Good” – Andy Grammer

Because it‘s okay to walk away from a prospect that just isn’t a good fit.

15. “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” – Beastie Boys

More like, “No Sleep Till a Discovery Call Gets Scheduled.”

16. “Hall of Fame” – The Script ft. will.i.am

Work every day like you want to be in the hall of fame.

No_one • Apr 6, 2022 at 1:59 pm

one good song i like to listen to when being productive is Ginger And Lime by spice rack.

A great song to listen to when just sitting at home or in your room doing homework! it has no lyrics but it is a good song to go with anything you are doing. it is also a little short (about two min)

no_onw • Apr 6, 2022 at 1:26 pm

A good go to homework song for me would have to be ginger and lime by spice rack, it has no lyrics but its a good tune to get you in the mood!

@bruh_itzjoyce on insta • Jan 20, 2021 at 7:27 pm

I would also second blinding lights. I would also recommend Marmar oso. His songs hit deep they also have a nice flow to it. Post Malone as well, and some rnb would be really good for studying. I don’t know what you would listen to but I listen to these when studying or doing homework and *cough cough* I have A’s and B’s…. Might help you or it might not… And if it doesn’t then hope you find something that does 😉 *peace sign*

Trish Hunt • Jun 7, 2020 at 7:19 am

I second Blinding Lights. There is a 10 hour loop version out there.

Used to listen to Around the World by Daft Punk. It also has a 10 hour loop version.

I’ll have to check out the other recommendations.

WWE KID • Mar 25, 2020 at 6:37 pm

I think a Great Song that should go onto that list is “Blinding Lights” by the weeknd

Acacia • Oct 8, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I would have thought that too, but now Hendrix is pretty much all I listen to while studying. Something about that guitar really helps me focus. Give it a try before you write it off.

Joe S • Oct 7, 2010 at 2:39 pm

jimi hendrix would be the last thing I would listen to when studying.

5 key songs for the perfect homework playlist, the songs that will help you accomplish the most work..

5 Key Songs For The Perfect Homework Playlist

Music is something that has proven to be a great motivational source for me on many different occasions, including working out, getting hype before a big game, and knocking out the homework I have been procrastinating for the last week.

For the best results, you have to listen to the right music at the right time, and I’m here to tell you five key songs that help me get homework done in that crunch time.

1. "Year 3000" - The Jonas Brothers

This song is on my playlist for obvious reasons. It’s by the Jonas Brothers, so it’s bound to get me focused and motivated to knock out some work when I would much rather be sleeping or binging Netflix. Year 3000, specifically, is a major bop that can’t go unmentioned in any playlist. This is such a classic song, that it really gets the creative juices flowing and ready to roll.

2. "What Hurts the Most" - Rascal Flatts

Now, this may seem like a weird one to some people, but I promise you some slow, Rascal Flatts songs have gotten me through some of my most stressful homework nights.

I guess the soothing tones help calm me and clear my mind of the unnecessary thoughts. I have busted out plenty of papers the night before they are due listening to this song, so I can confirm it works.

3. "All the Small Things" - Blink-182

This is one my favorite throwback songs that really gets me pumped to bust out some homework, or pumped to do anything for that matter. It’s such an upbeat, fast-paced song that makes for a good study break jam session.

On many occasions, I have had to stop doing work for a minute to help refocus, and I believe that time is best spent with a mini jam session. If I spend this time not getting on my phone or not watching TV, then I am more likely to actually get back to work. Study breaks are definitely important, you just have to find the most efficient way to spend them.

4. "Scream" - Zac Efron (HSM 3)

I relate to this song a lot more than I would like to admit. I am a very easily stressed out person, it really doesn’t take much for me. I have always been a HUGE fan of High School Musical, and I mean huge, so I make it a point to listen to the soundtrack on as many occasions as possible.

It just so happens that I see this one of the best songs to grind out some work too, because if the great Troy Bolton can work through his stress so can the rest of us.

5. "I Fall Apart" - Post Malone

This one is also a slow song that may not seem like you can really get some work done, but I promise you can. I have listened to this song on repeat, several times, while getting some serious work done.

Slower songs also help me when I have readings to do because I can’t stand sitting in silence, but I also get too distracted while reading to more upbeat songs. This song is a perfect medium for me, it’s not too upbeat where it distracts me. This GIF is also an accurate representation of me when I finally finish all of my work that I procrastinated on.

I hope you guys test out these songs on your upcoming homework playlist and grind out some serious work, especially with finals quickly approaching. I also do not recommend procrastinating like me, but it happens, so hopefully, these songs help you work through that time. Jam out and study hard, my friends.

25 beatles lyrics: your go-to guide for every situation, the best lines from the fab four.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make

The End- Abbey Road, 1969

The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful and so are you

Dear Prudence- The White Album, 1968

Love is old, love is new, love is all, love is you

Because- Abbey Road, 1969

There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be

All You Need Is Love, 1967

Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friend

We Can Work It Out- Rubber Soul, 1965

He say, "I know you, you know me", One thing I can tell you is you got to be free

Come Together- Abbey Road, 1969

Oh please, say to me, You'll let me be your man. And please say to me, You'll let me hold your hand

I Wanna Hold Your Hand- Meet The Beatles!, 1964

It was twenty years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play. They've been going in and out of style, but they're guaranteed to raise a smile

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band-1967

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see

Strawberry Fields Forever- Magical Mystery Tour, 1967

Can you hear me? When it rains and shine, it's just a state of mind

Rain- Paperback Writer "B" side, 1966

Little darling, it's been long cold lonely winter. Little darling, it feels like years since it' s been here. Here comes the sun, Here comes the sun, and I say it's alright

Here Comes The Sun- Abbey Road, 1969

We danced through the night and we held each other tight, and before too long I fell in love with her. Now, I'll never dance with another when I saw her standing there

Saw Her Standing There- Please Please Me, 1963

I love you, I love you, I love you, that's all I want to say

Michelle- Rubber Soul, 1965

You say you want a revolution. Well you know, we all want to change the world

Revolution- The Beatles, 1968

All the lonely people, where do they all come from. All the lonely people, where do they all belong

Eleanor Rigby- Revolver, 1966

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends

With A Little Help From My Friends- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967

Hey Jude, 1968

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they're here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday

Let It Be- Let It Be, 1970

And anytime you feel the pain, Hey Jude, refrain. Don't carry the world upon your shoulders

I'll give you all i got to give if you say you'll love me too. i may not have a lot to give but what i got i'll give to you. i don't care too much for money. money can't buy me love.

Can't Buy Me Love- A Hard Day's Night, 1964

All you need is love, love is all you need

All You Need Is Love- Magical Mystery Tour, 1967

Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly. all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird- The White Album, 1968

Though I know I'll never lose affection, for people and things that went before. I know I'll often stop and think about them. In my life, I love you more

In My Life- Rubber Soul, 1965

While these are my 25 favorites, there are quite literally 1000s that could have been included. The Beatles' body of work is massive and there is something for everyone. If you have been living under a rock and haven't discovered the Fab Four, you have to get musically educated. Stream them on Spotify, find them on iTunes or even buy a CD or record (Yes, those still exist!). I would suggest starting with 1, which is a collection of most of their #1 songs, or the 1968 White Album. Give them chance and you'll never look back.

14 Invisible Activities: Unleash Your Inner Ghost!

Obviously the best superpower..

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

1. "Haunt" your friends.

Follow them into their house and cause a ruckus.

2. Sneak into movie theaters.

Going to the cinema alone is good for your mental health , says science

Considering that the monthly cost of subscribing to a media-streaming service like Netflix is oft...

Free movies...what else to I have to say?

3. Sneak into the pantry and grab a snack without judgment.

Late night snacks all you want? Duh.

4. Reenact "Hollow Man" and play Kevin Bacon.

America's favorite son? And feel what it's like to be in a MTV Movie Award nominated film? Sign me up.

5. Wear a mask and pretend to be a floating head.

Just another way to spook your friends in case you wanted to.

6. Hold objects so they'll "float."

"Oh no! A floating jar of peanut butter."

7. Win every game of hide-and-seek.

Just stand out in the open and you'll win.

8. Eat some food as people will watch it disappear.

Even everyday activities can be funny.

9. Go around pantsing your friends.

Even pranks can be done; not everything can be good.

10. Not have perfect attendance.

You'll say here, but they won't see you...

11. Avoid anyone you don't want to see.

Whether it's an ex or someone you hate, just use your invisibility to slip out of the situation.

12. Avoid responsibilities.

Chores? Invisible. People asking about social life? Invisible. Family being rude? Boom, invisible.

13. Be an expert on ding-dong-ditch.

Never get caught and have the adrenaline rush? I'm down.

14. Brag about being invisible.

Be the envy of the town.

But don't, I repeat, don't go in a locker room. Don't be a pervert with your power. No one likes a Peeping Tom.

Good luck, folks.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.

You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life. You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Thank you for making me want to be a better person.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Eye of the Tiger is one of the most popular motivational theme songs for work of all time. The song is all about overcoming obstacles and facing challenges and triumphing in the end. 3. Work Work – Britney Spears

Work Work by Britney Spears is one of the best songs about hard work and success. In this dance hit, Britney preaches the relationship between rewards and results and lets listeners know that if they crave the nicer things in life, then they better get moving and working towards their goals.

If your workplace is cool with colorful language (or you have headphones!) then feel free to blast the original, Work B*tch.

Most motivational lyric: “Hold your head high, fingers to the sky//They gonna try and try ya, but they can’t deny ya//Keep it building higher, and higher.”

4. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger – Daft Punk

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk is a mantra for constant improvement. The song only contains a few repeated lyrics. The spirit of the song is that work is never over, and pushing yourself beyond your limits fuels growth.

Stronger, the Ye remix of this song, is also a strong contender for best motivational work music, although you may want to opt for a clean cut to be more safe-for-work.

Most motivational lyric: “Work it harder, make it better//Do it faster, makes us stronger”

5. Hall of Fame – The Script ft will.i.am

Hall of Fame is one of the top inspirational songs for work. The song assures that persistence and patience pay off and tells listeners that their hard work will be remembered. Hall of Fame is a call to action to find deeper meaning in work and create a lasting legacy.

Most motivational lyric: “Standin’ in the Hall of Fame//And the world’s gonna know your name//’Cause you burn with the brightest flame.”

6. Here It Goes Again – Ok Go

Here It Goes Again is a reminder to expect the unexpected and accept factors outside of your control. The song reminds listeners that even when things seem to be going smoothly, plans can go awry. This lighthearted song shows that hiccups happen, and encourages folks to keep going anyway.

Not to mention, learning the famously viral treadmill dance can be a fun team building activity.

Most motivational lyric: “Just when you think (think) you’re in control//Just when you think (think) you’ve got a hold//Just when you get on a roll//Here it goes, here it goes, here it goes again.”

7. Bills – Lunch Money Lewis

I first discovered this song because my best friend had it on a playlist to motivate her to get ready to go to a job she did not enjoy. Even if you love your job, work can get hard. Outside responsibilities can be a major motivator on the days when passion is dimmer than usual. At the end of the day, on some level we all work because we have bills and it can be comforting to have a reminder that other folks sometimes also struggle to make ends meet.

Most motivational lyric: “I got bills I gotta pay//So I’m gon’ work, work, work every day.”

8. Dream On – Aerosmith

Dream On is one of the most epic motivational rock songs for work. The lyrics say that life is hard and short, and you should seize the day and keep dreaming until your dreams come to fruition. As if the words were not aspirational enough, the vocals and guitars are even more stirring.

Any of your employees who can hit that haunting high note at the end deserves a raise.

Most motivational lyric: “Dream until the dream come true.”

9. Final Countdown – Europe

Final Countdown can provide teams with the last push they need to meet deadlines. The literal lyrics are about leaving Earth and exploring space, yet most listeners only pay attention to the catchy beat, famous riff, and exclamation of “it’s the final countdown!”

Most motivational lyric: “It’s the final countdown.” (Although, if being honest, the instrumentals are the most motivating part of the song.)

10. Whatever It Takes – Imagine Dragons

Whatever It Takes is one of the best songs about hard work and success. This tune oozes grit and determination. As the title suggests, the song is about enduring hard times and doing whatever it takes to succeed. The singer welcomes hurdles and maintains a sense of optimism. The song acknowledges that anyone who strives for greatness faces hardships, and the end result is worth the struggle.

Most motivational lyric: “Yeah, take me to the top, I’m ready for//Whatever it takes.”

11. Shake It Off – Taylor Swift

Shake It Off is the ultimate anthem for overcoming setbacks and keeping on keeping on. Taylor Swift urges listeners to ignore haters, be themselves, and keep trying. This song acts like an antidote to unfair criticism and reminds listeners that folks may talk no matter what you do, so you might as well do your best.

Most motivational lyric: “But I keep cruising//Can’t stop, won’t stop moving//It’s like I got this music in my mind//Saying it’s gonna be alright.”

12. Roll With It – Oasis

Roll With It is an anti-imposter syndrome song. Every word speaks to moving beyond self-doubt, taking action even if you lack confidence, and doing what you have to do. This song shows that everybody feels lost sometimes, and to find your way sometimes you have to keep moving.

Most motivational lyric: “You gotta roll with it//You gotta take your time//You gotta say what you say//Don’t let anybody get in your way.”

13. Keep Your Head Up – Andy Grammer

Keep Your Head Up is one of the cheeriest inspirational songs for work. This happy tune talks about riding out bad luck, learning not to worry, and facing challenges with hope and a positive attitude. The beat is uplifting and optimistic, and this sweet song reminds listeners that they can overcome any obstacle with humor, faith, and grit, and that all troubles end eventually.

Most motivational lyric: “I know it’s hard, know it’s hard//To remember sometimes//But you gotta keep your head up.”

14. Don’t Worry Be Happy – Bobby McFerrin

Sometimes, the only motivation workers need is a reminder to stress less and not take every situation so seriously. Don’t Worry Be Happy gives listeners permission to let go of anxiety and enjoy the moment. This happy tune insists that there may be troubles, but you can control your attitude and reaction to these struggles.

Most motivational lyric: “In every life we have some trouble//But when you worry you make it double//Don’t worry, be happy.”

15. We Will Rock You – Queen

We Will Rock You by Queen is one of the best motivational rock songs for work. The famous clap-stomp alone is enough to get employees fired up, and the declaration of “we will rock you” is a rallying cry for teamwork. This song has been chanted in sports stadiums for decades and is every bit as rousing in office settings as well.

Most motivational lyric: “We will, we will rock you.”

16. So Ambitious – Jay Z ft. Pharrell

So Ambitious is one of the best motivational rap songs for work. The song is a musical autobiography of Jay-Z’s journey to become one of the biggest names in modern music, and how he ignored the naysayers and focused on his goals. The lyrics encourage listeners to believe in themselves and use others’ doubts and criticisms as fuel to become greater.

Most motivational lyric: “Motivation for me is them telling me what I could not be.”

17. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough is a feel good anthem that provides an immediate confidence boost. When taken literally, the lyrics are about two lovers who cannot be kept apart because of their bond. However, the song can also serve as an ode to teamwork, as well as a promise that no task is impossible. Lyrics aside, the happy and hopeful beat is sure to instantly uplift employees.

Most motivational lyric: “‘Cause baby, there ain’t no mountain high enough//Ain’t no valley low enough//Ain’t no river wide enough.”

18. All Star – Smash Mouth

Beyond delivering a healthy dose of nostalgia to millenials, All Star by Smash Mouth provides a pick-me-up to workers in need of a quick pep talk. The song assures that even when life gets hard and folks underestimate you, you are still worthy and capable and there are adventures to be had. All Star insists that everyone has something to offer and that trying and exploring is half the fun.

Most motivational lyric: “And all that glitters is gold//Only shooting stars break the mold.”

19. Titanium – David Guetta ft Sia

Titanium is an ode to endurance and resilience. This is a song workers can play on bad days to remind themselves that they are stronger than they think and that they will survive the current crises. Sia insists that she can take anything the world can throw at her and keep going, and inspires listeners to feel similarly invulnerable.

Most motivational lyric: “You shoot me down, but I won’t fall//I am titanium.”

20. 9 to 5 – Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton may be critical of bad bosses and the corporate slog in “9-to-5,” yet this classic is not anti-work. In the latter half of the song, Dolly encourages listeners to embrace their own ambitions and build something great. This subtle shift implies that listeners merely have to pay their dues and bide their time until they can take control of their careers, at which point all the tiny work annoyances previously mentioned will pay off.

Most motivational lyric: “Well you got dreams and you know they matter//Be your own boss, climb your own ladder//That moment’s getting closer by the day.”

21.  A Little Less Conversation – Elvis Presley

A Little Less Conversation is the perfect song for teams who are ready to move from dreaming or doing, or employees who need a reminder that results matter more than promises. This musical challenge spurs pros to take action, seize the moment, and prove themselves. If Elvis’s words fail to inspire momentum, then the upbeat tempo of the music is sure to  do the trick.

Most motivational lyric: “Don’t procrastinate, don’t articulate.”

22. Started at the Bottom – Drake

Started at the Bottom is one of the more popular motivational rap songs for work. This tune offers a promise that humble beginnings can turn into inspiring endings. This song is the perfect music to help teams take stock of progress and celebrate growth. The lyrics may be on the repetitive side, however “look how far we’ve come” is often a message worth repeating.

Most motivational lyric: “Started from the bottom, now the whole team here.”

Here is a Spotify playlist of these songs.

Note that some of these songs have explicit lyrics (Drake, Jay-Z, Britney Spears) and you may want to swap out the songs for the clean versions if your office is more conservative!

Final Thoughts

Maintaining momentum throughout the workweeks and quarters can at times be tricky. This playlist pumps up staff and delivers a burst of musical motivation to lift morale, inspire action, and boost performance. When intrinsic drive dampens, breaking out the speakers and blasting these tunes might be the push your team needs to get excited about work again.

Here Are 50 of the Best Workout Songs to Get You Motivated

W ith the thrill of New Year’s resolutions behind us and a long winter ahead, it can be hard to keep going with workout goals. But sometimes, all you need is the right song to give you the push you need to keep at it — whether running, biking or weight lifting. TIME is here to help with an essential workout playlist: a mix of songs that are tried-and-tested crowd favorites and some deeper cuts worth your attention from recent years and beyond. Normani’s “Motivation,” Lizzo’s “Good As Hell” and Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode” are just the beginning; from hip-hop to classic rock to EDM, there’s a little bit of everything.

More from TIME

“Getting on a treadmill or a bike or going for a run is a very solo activity, so having an artist sing to you along the way can be reassuring,” Spotify’s trends experts Shanon Cook told TIME about the popularity of music in getting people going with their fitness routines.”Music can help you find your rhythm or help you set your pace.” From motivational lyrics to driving beats and tunes that bring back good memories, it’s no secret that music has power in helping you stay on track.

We sorted through hundreds of tunes to select the critical picks that help us get our hearts pumping at fitness classes or while working out solo. The end result: a list of 50 of the songs that are best used for motivating you while working out — whatever the activity, from running to weight-lifting to getting in your crunches. As Cook says, “every person’s different, and every person’s going to listen to different types of songs when they’re working out.” But certain things are nearly-universally appealing, like hip-hop jams. And certain songs, like Eminem’s “Till I Collapse” (Spotify’s most popular workout-related tune for four years in a row), Kanye West’s “Stronger” and Survivor’s perennial classic “Eye of the Tiger” remain favorites across the board. Others — a Ricky Martin deep cut, some Brazilian baile funk and even a K-pop track — might be new surprises for the casual listener. Turn on the music and turn up your heart rate.

These are the 50 best workout songs.

50. “FU,” Miley Cyrus feat. French Montana

Miley Cyrus ‘ 2013 album Bangerz was an interesting experiment in genre mixing; there’s country, EDM, pop and rap all wrapped up in one project. What Cyrus brings to everything is her signature personality and bold vocals. On “FU” with rapper French Montana she holds nothing back. The result is a cheeky kiss-off over a gritty dubstep beat that’s certain to get you moving.

49. “I Don’t Care,” Ed Sheeran feat. Justin Bieber

“We at a party we don’t want to be at” is not a particularly inspiring sentiment, true. But the hollow, insistent drumbeat of Sheeran and Bieber’s 2019 collaboration will get under your skin; there’s a reason Sheeran remains a chart mainstay. The thought behind the song works for any kind of workout, too: just keep going and put up with the situation and you’ll get through it.

48. “My Oh My,” Camila Cabello feat. DaBaby

Camila Cabello has an instinct for wildly catchy Latin-inflected riffs; chart hits “Havana” and “Señorita” are proof of that. “My Oh My” is a little slower but just as effective, dark and brooding with its echoing chorus and her own intensity. Throw in the joyful rhymes of DaBaby, and suddenly it’s a track with extra kick to help you keep pumping.

47. “Raising Hell,” Kesha feat. Big Freedia

Kesha ‘s latest phase is full of exuberance: “Raising Hell” sees her having an absolute blast over a bouncy bass, with an assist from Big Freedia. Her tendency to love a chanted chorus makes it easy to sing along to as well, which might help when you need that extra workout boost.

46. “Blood, Sweat & Tears,” Ava Max

Albanian-American pop star Ava Max can’t help but make catchy songs (see: breakout hit “Sweet But Psycho”). “Blood, Sweat & Tears” riffs off of a playground chant but ends up as a driving anthem that parallels the concept of working hard quite nicely.

45. “God Is a Dancer,” Tiësto and Mabel

English singer Mabel brings soulful vocals to this fast-paced electronic track from Dutch DJ and producer Tiësto. “Keep that pace… take it step by step,” Mabel sings, appropriately for any workout: its consistency makes it an ideal jam for the gym.

44. “I Win,” Lethal Bizzle feat. Skepta

British grime artist Lethal Bizzle’s anthemic, confident “I Win” starts with punch and never lets up. If positive self-talk were enough to get you through a workout, then “I Win” would be all you need to hit every goal.

43. “Don’t Stop the Music,” Rihanna

“Don’t Stop the Music” came out back in 2007, but it’s Rihanna’s gift that keeps giving. Intense from the get-go, there’s something about the directness of its bassline that resonates no matter what. Plus, as it builds to its big chorus, it’s impossible not to find the beat of whatever you’re doing.

42. “…Ready For It?,” Taylor Swift

Swift’s 2017 self-referential album Reputation was filled with intensely anthemic pop; “…Ready For It?” has the biggest drop, the most hard-charging beat and the most soaring chorus, making it the best of the workout options.

41. “Jungle,” X Ambassadors feat. Jamie N Commons

The last decade’s update to Queen’s “We Will Rock You” came in the form of “Jungle” from rock band X Ambassadors and soul singer Jamie N Commons: a hand-clap, foot-stomping, bluesy song with searing guitar and reverberating intensity. It feels like the soundtrack of the best scene in an action movie; it should certainly do the trick at a workout.

40. “Mic Drop (Steve Aoki Remix),” BTS

There’s a reason K-pop supergroup BTS inspires such avid fandom: hits that range from sweet ballads to intense tracks like “Mic Drop” off their record-breaking album Love Yourself: Answer , which seamlessly mixes their prodigious rapping skills with dance beats and a dark, catchy edge. Steve Aoki’s remix adds extra oomph to a song that already hit hard. (Also inspiring: the sharp choreography in the music video.)

39. “Survivor,” Destiny’s Child

A classic Destiny’s Child banger, “Survivor” is the kind of workout song you need when you’re getting close to reaching your limit. Singing along to “I’m a survivor, I’m not gon’ give up, I’m not gon’ stop, I’m gon’ work harder” is the ultimate boost. Thank you, Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle.

38. “On the Ball,” Bryce Vine

Breezy and bright with a surf-rock vibe, Bryce Vine’s “On the Ball” is exactly what it says it is: a celebration of being on top of things. Vine oozes confidence over the pop-rap beat, making it perfect for soundtracking a workout.

37. “BOP,” DaBaby

Rapper DaBaby was one of 2019’s biggest breakout stars, a vivacious presence in whatever music he popped up in with a distinctive, fast-paced flow. His “BOP” is just that: over a wavering flute, DaBaby comes out swinging with his infectious energy.

36. “Giant,” Calvin Harris feat. Rag’n’Bone Man

“I am giant, stand up on my shoulders, tell me what you see” — that’s the uplifting refrain in Scottish DJ Calvin Harris’s latest hit, backgrounded by bold horns and a soulful beat. In other words, it’s a great jam for hitting the gym with.

35. “Work From Home,” Fifth Harmony feat. Ty Dolla $ign

Fifth Harmony may have broken up, but “Work From Home” — their blockbuster hit as a group — is still one of the catchiest pop releases of the 2010s. And it is technically about “working,” (right?) which makes it even better for a workout.

34. “Satisfaction,” Benny Benassi

Italian DJ Benny Benassi’s debut single “Satisfaction” may be from 2002, but its sticky electronic beat is both sonically pioneering and deeply, yes, satisfying. With a chorus that repeats “Push me,” what better to keep you in the workout game?

33. “Trampoline,” SHAED feat. ZAYN

Who knew a trampoline would be such a compelling song subject? Indie pop trio SHAED started things off and tapped Zayn for a later remix of their viral hit; the result is a dance-pop track that’s heavy on the down-beat, spare with its production choices and intense with its focus.

32. “War Paint,” FLETCHER

Viral 2015 hit “War Paint” is one of those soaring pop anthems that can’t help but get people to their feet. With bouncy percussion and a rollicking, uplifting chorus, it’s a perfect workout track: “Bring the big guns out,” singer Fletcher insists. “Watch me put my war paint on.”

31. “Stronger,” Kanye West

One of only a handful of songs that speak directly to the physical experience of working out, West’s seminal hit “Stronger” was born to soundtrack the hardest parts of your time in a gym.

30. “Vai Malandra,” Anitta, MC Zaac and Maejor feat. Tropkillaz and DJ Yuri Martins

A heavy hitting squad of Brazilian artists and one American — starring Anitta — came together for the baile funk alchemy that is “Vai Malandra.” With its juicy, consistent beat — and lyrics that translate roughly to “go on with your bad self” — it’s like a shot of saucy energy straight to your veins.

29. “No New Friends,” LSD

LSD is the supergroup consisting of pop mastermind Sia, hitmaking DJ Diplo and producer-singer Labrinth ; with that DNA, their collaborative work was always destined to basically be a series of pure bangers. “No New Friends” from their 2019 group project is big, bold pop with heavy percussion and a melodic chorus: an ace for workout pump-ups.

28. “Rock It,” Ofenbach

Sometimes you just need a consistent beat that is exactly right for the treadmill. That would be “Rock It,” from French DJ duo Ofenbach. It’s bright and layered, just distracting enough to keep you interested but insistent enough to help you keep the pace. And with “get in the groove” as its refrain, it’s right on theme for a workout, too.

27. “Bruised Not Broken,” Matoma feat. MNEK and Kiana Ledé

For an uplifting boost while putting in the gym work, look to MNEK : a sought-after pop producer, his own work is anthemic in nature, often focused on self-empowerment. “Bruised Not Broken” is that perfect mix of syrupy pop instincts mixed with clubby beats thanks to producer Matoma and inspiring lyrical content.

26. “Bring Em Out,” T.I.

Back in 2004, this was rapper T.I’s big hit (thanks in no small part to a Jay-Z vocal sample that kicks things off). Today, it’s a workout soundtrack mainstay thanks to that dancefloor-ready beat and motivational energy.

25. “Jumpin Jumpin,” Destiny’s Child

“Ladies leave your man at home,” the women of Destiny’s Child told us smartly all the way back in 1999, “because it’s 11:30 and the club is jumpin, jumpin.” It was a hype song then, and it holds up twenty years later. The elliptical may not be the club, but we can certainly pretend it is.

24. “Higher Love,” Kygo feat. Whitney Houston

“Higher Love” has a long history: it was originally released by Steve Winwood, with Chaka Khan vocals, in 1986 — and nabbed him a Record of the Year back then. Whitney Houston put out her own cover in 1990, but with a limited release. It became a Billboard hit again just last year, and one of Spotify’s most popular workout tracks, when Norwegian DJ Kygo gave it a tropical house spin in a production that chops up the spiritually-attuned song into a club-ready dance tune. Resonant and soaring, thanks to Houston’s powerful voice, it’s hard not to feel the spirit.

23. “I Like It,” Cardi B feat. J Balvin and Bad Bunny

Arguably 2018’s song of the summer, “I Like It” is festive and fun-loving, thanks in part to its immediately memorable boogaloo beat, the contributions of fellow Latin stars J Balvin and Bad Bunny and Cardi B ‘s singalong-ready chorus.

22. “La Mordidita,” Ricky Martin

This under-appreciated Latin jam is one of Ricky Martin’s best (yes, that Ricky Martin), thanks to its effervescent salsa beat.

21. “Bad Guy,” Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish is arguably 2019’s biggest star . Her number-one hit off her 2019 debut album proves why. Produced with her brother Finneas, it’s dark and quick with a juicy toe-tapping beat that’s just right for working out. The jazzy riffs and background snaps make it fun; the lyrics and vocal inflections make it memorable.

20. “Numb/Encore,” Linkin Park feat. Jay-Z

This 2004 cross-genre collaboration between rock band Linkin Park and rapper Jay-Z has stood up to the test of time as a tried-and-true workout hit. “What the hell are you waiting for?” is as good of a pump-up mantra as any, but it’s the unusual mashup of Linkin Park’s melodic punk and Jay’s rapping that gives the song its staying power.

19. “Purple Hat,” Sofi Tukker

Electronic dance duo Sofi Tukker have never been afraid to have fun with their music, taking cues from global musical cultures to make tracks that are bold and party-ready. “Purple Hat,” their 2019 hit, throws in some rock ‘n’ roll for a fresh take. It’s hard not to want to move to its insistent beat.

18. “Work B-tch,” Britney Spears

What Ms. Spears wishes becomes our command. “Work B-tch” reminds you that if “you want a hot body?” there’s only one way to get there: work… hard work. The song was a 2013 hit on Spears’s eighth album, but it’s seminal in its exhortation to keep grinding for what you want.

17. “Sicko Mode,” Travis Scott

Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode” is the rapper at his slickest; it also became his first Hot 100 number-one in 2018. (The fact it features Drake doesn’t hurt.) But what the song does most unusually is mix and match samples and styles, creating an eclectic track that keeps things interesting — all over a driving, gritty beat.

16. “On My Way,” Tiësto feat. Bright Sparks

This peppy EDM tune from Dutch DJ and producer Tiesto has a message that matches perfectly with the fitness journey. Play it when you’re hitting your stride.

15. “Paint It Black,” Rolling Stones

The ultimate Rolling Stones song, “Paint It Black” starts with that meandering, hypnotic intro before building into a fiery rock ‘n’ roll hit with a steady beat that’s great for pounding pavement when you need to keep the tempo up.

14. “Lean On,” Major Lazer, MØ and DJ Snake

After its release in 2015, the EDM-moombahton track “Lean On” became Spotify’s most-streamed song in the world. (Drake would later beat it with “One Dance.”) But its catchy mix of a stretchy beat and Swedish singer MØ’s emphatic vocals keep it in heavy rotation as a motivational song for the ages.

13. “Level Up,” Ciara

What’s more motivational than Ciara asking us to “level up? ” Probably her music video for the track, which shows off Ciara’s jaw-dropping dancing ability — a motivating factor, to be sure. The song is fast-paced and perfectly timed for a workout; even better, it also kicked off a viral challenge that was about not only dancing but also figuring out ways to “level up” in your own life.

12. “Believer,” Imagine Dragons

Heavy drumbeats and a driving, anthemic chorus give this song its immediate pump-up power from rock show mainstays Imagine Dragons, led by their energetic frontman Dan Reynolds . It was inescapable on the radio and in ads in 2017 for a reason, and was further boosted by a 2019 remix.

11. “Good As Hell,” Lizzo

Lizzo became TIME’s Entertainer of the Year in 2019, but “Good as Hell” has been around since 2016: a soulful, uplifting song about realizing independence. “Baby, how you feeling? Feeling good as hell!” works as one of the most joyful affirmations in recent pop history, and made its way up the Billboard charts in 2019 upon its re-release as a single. It’s also a perfect tune to work out to, as it turns out; Lizzo preaches a gospel of body positivity, making every line a celebration of exactly where you’re at, not where you’re going.

10. “La Romana,” Bad Bunny feat. El Alfa

When Puerto Rico’s Bad Bunny surprise-released an album on Christmas of 2018, it was the ultimate gift for fans. From pop-punk to reggaeton balladry, his music spans sounds — but “La Romana” is the most hard-charging hit of the bunch, with a deeply satisfying rhythm. And when it switches gears halfway through to feature rapper El Alfa, it only turns it into more of an intense track. Work out at your own risk.

9. “Wake Me Up,” Avicii

When Swedish DJ Avicii blended together a country melody and Aloe Blacc’s gruff, soulful vocals with his own bulletproof talent for EDM drops back in 2013, he was pioneering a new course for electronic music — and crafted a magically compelling hit. Seven years later, the insistent buoyancy of the song holds up.

8. “Vossi Bop,” Stormzy

British grime star Stormzy is known for charisma in his music. “Vossi Bop” is characteristic of what has made him a global hit: creative beats, brilliant rhyme delivery and a sense of fun over it all. The 2019 track took him to number one in the U.K. — his first time atop the charts — and taught the world about the viral “Vossi bop” dance.

7. “Dance Monkey,” Tones and I

Australia’s Tones and I broke through in 2019 with the debut viral hit “Dance Monkey,” a deeply infectious pop ballad with a catchy chorus that won’t quit. Naturally, that makes it a good fit for a workout (or a dance party).

6. “POWER,” Kanye West

West’s 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has long been a fan favorite . “Power” remains its most motivating anthem. Based on a handclap beat and cheerleading-style shouts, it’s a workout stalwart.

5. “Don’t Start Now,” Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa made a name for herself with juicy, often-empowering pop in 2017; her return in 2019 was kicked off with the forward-thinking, bouncy disco vibe of “Don’t Start Now,” a song that manages to be both delightfully independent in its message and club- or gym-ready in its beat.

4. “Con Altura,” Rosalía and J Balvin feat. El Guincho

“Con Altura” takes its name from a radio personality’s catchphrase, suggesting taking something to a new level. The collaboration between Colombian reggaeton master J Balvin and Spanish pop artist Rosalía, known for her flamenco style, did just that. It’s a hit with attitude, perfect for leveling up a workout’s intensity.

3. “Eye of the Tiger,” Suvivor

“Eye of the Tiger” is one of those songs that just gets the people going. (Thanks, Rocky.) Don’t fight it; assume your best all-or-nothing attitude as soon as the early strums start, and keep going.

2. “Motivation,” Normani

Normani’s breakout single “Motivation” does exactly what the song title suggests: works as a fun dance song with a catchy, motivating beat. It doesn’t hurt that the accompanying music video shows the former Fifth Harmony singer and Dancing with the Stars favorite breaking it down with some seriously impressive moves. Motivation, indeed.

1. “Till I Collapse,” Eminem

One of Eminem’s big hits also happens to be a pep talk. “When you feel weak you feel like you want to just give up,” he intones, “but you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength.” Then he blasts off. When the going gets hard, Eminem is here to take you through to the finish line — whatever the workout, whatever the challenge.

The Music to Listen To While You're Working from Home

If the noise of your full house or the silence of your apartment is driving you insane, tune in to our playlist.

Photography, Room, Collage, Technology, Art, Furniture, Stock photography, Sitting, Photomontage, Graphic design,

During long periods of working remotely, sometimes all it takes is the right song or album to get into the zone. Perhaps it’s an ethereal Tame Impala track to boost your mood or a shiny Tinashe hit to lend you a dose of afternoon energy.

Victoria Sines, Content Strategy Manager

Miguel is my go-to forever and always, but I can’t stop listening to Tame Impala’s new album, The Slow Rush . Their music always puts me in a good mood, and the song “Breathe Deeper” (pun intended) has really been getting me going in the morning or when that midafternoon slump hits.

Barry Samaha, Freelance Market Editor

For the past three years, Spotify’s year-end review has decreed that Aretha Live at Fillmore West is the album I listen to most. Apple Music also backs this data. Still, I’ve never really analyzed why it is in constant rotation on all my audible devices. Perhaps it’s the verve in Franklin’s voice, the musical arrangement of each song, her chats with the crowd in between sets, or a combination of everything. But what I do know for certain is that it makes me happy and keeps me focused. And when I am at home by my lonesome, and not panicking from headlines on CNN (I know! I know!) or stuffing my face with brownies, singing along to this gem keeps me sane.

Kerry Pieri, Fashion & Features Director

I find that any Motown Spotify list that has anything to do with Marvin Gaye keeps me in a good mood, motivated, and gives my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter something to jam to.

Bianca Betancourt, Assistant Digital News Editor

As of late while working from home, I’ve been listening to Kaytranada’s latest album, Bubba . The album’s tracks are upbeat enough to wake me up but still simultaneously chill enough to be a proper soundtrack to the start of the morning. My favorite track is the sassy “10%,” a funky collab with burgeoning Colombian pop star Kali Uchis. Around lunchtime, I usually begin to blast Bad Bunny—“Si Veo a Tu Mamá” is my favorite track off his flawless sophomore effort YHLQMDLG, which stands for “Yo Hago Lo Que Me Da La Gana” and translates to “I Do What I Want.” Then as the day winds down, I’ll put on Tinashe’s Songs for You —a very underrated and well-produced curation of cool girl, modern-pop bops that usually results in me shimmying at my desk, naturally.

Chelsey Sanchez, Editorial Fellow

I feel something akin to religious fervor each time Mitski graces my speakers. Her eclectic discography matches me at every stage of my work-from-home process: cathartic, grating vocals for initial rage; decadent and romantic pop songs for when I hit my groove; and skeletal instrumental arrangements for my inevitable surrender to Slack notifications and email pings. It’s always easier to bow down to the workload when Mitski is prodding me along.

Anna Aiello, Motion Designer

A few songs I’ve been listening to that I’d recommend: “Lost in Yesterday” by Tame Impala. Being locked in my childhood home might actually be the ideal place to listen to Tame Impala’s latest album, The Slow Rush . I’ve been particularly enjoying the song “Lost in Yesterday,” which has a fantastic chorus that may warrant a dance break for me and my dog.

“In My Room” by Frank Ocean. The name of this track has a whole new meaning in these times. Frank Ocean is famous for being a homebody, and I’ve been listening to this single on repeat to bask in the glory of staying home.

“Home” by CARIBOU. The perfect song to make pancakes to. Quiet but upbeat.

Roberto Dume, Director of Photography

I go for tone and mood to sort of map out the day. Think of your eight-hour workday as an album, and your music lineup as your track listing. Some of the records can weave in and out of each other and work just fine on shuffle, but usually I take albums and connect them to create a mood for an extended period, so nothing gets stuck.

If I’m working, I like music that’s not overly distracting, but I can still feel underfoot. It’s always about mood and shifting so that the day is both energized for work without taking you away from the focus.

Some records that have been circulating in rotation while working from home: Frank Ocean’s Blonde , Sade’s Diamond Life , Mac Miller’s Swimming , Khruangbin & Leon Bridges’s Texas Sun EP, Harry Styles’s Fine Line , Japanese Breakfast’s Soft Sounds from Another Planet , Blood Orange’s Negro Swan , Jeff Buckley’s Grace , Radiohead’s In Rainbows , Mac Demarco’s Salad Days , The Velvet Underground’s self-titled album, Erykah Badu’s Baduizm , Little Dragon’s Ritual Union , Washed Out’s Life of Leisure EP, Childish Gambino’s Kauai EP, Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and Rosalía’s El Mal Querer .

Lee Manansala, Senior Video Editor

WFH for me means waking up at 9:45 to be at my computer at 10, so I’m not fully awake. I put on something light, not too challenging. This morning, I put on “Rip It Up” by Orange Juice—if you like Vampire Weekend’s first album, you’ll like Orange Juice.

Once I find my stride, I need something that I can put on and forget, something that can reasonably take the place of the office din, which, if I’m being honest, I miss. Today, I put on Selected Ambient Works 85-9 2 by Aphex Twin. I know it by heart, so it’s not distracting, but I would miss it if it wasn’t on.

I ended today with The Wild Hunt by The Tallest Man on Earth, because when you’re trying to stave off atrophy and cabin fever, what you need is the perfect road trip album.

Erica Gonzales, Culture & Content Strategy Editor

My work soundtrack depends entirely on my mood (I have gone from Ariana Grande to Creedence Clearwater Revival in a day—I don’t understand myself), but lately, I’ve been finding comfort in mellow soul classics. I love “Superwoman (Where You Were You When I Needed You)” by Stevie Wonder; he’s one of my all-time favorites, and this deep cut is a perfect mix of calming and melancholy. I’ve also been constantly listening to “I Can’t Stand the Rain” by Ann Peebles; I can’t get that tingly timbales intro out of my head, and the song is such a cool gem apropos of New York’s recent dreary weather.

Other more modern artists and tunes on rotation: Dijon, Soccer Mommy, Clairo, the new Moses Sumney album grae , Niia, Snoh Aalegra, Outkast, Tom Misch, Boygenius, Rex Orange County, and Solange’s A Seat at the Table and When I Get Home.

Local restaurant owner has no plans to slow down, even at age 95

Alice “ma” harper being honored for 33 years in business.

Katrina Webber , Reporter

Robert Samarron , Photojournalist

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – With the energy of someone decades younger, Alice “Ma” Harper maneuvered around the small kitchen of her San Antonio restaurant one recent morning, making sure everything was just right for the lunchtime crowd.

“We got rice ready, beans ready, gumbo ready. I’m going to make the sandwich,” she said, ticking off a mental checklist.

The preparation work had staff members scrambling around.

But even at the age of 95, the owner of Ma Harper’s Creole Cuisine said she has no plans to slow down.

“You don’t die from working. You die from not working,” Harper said, emphatically. “I’m not ready to stop because there’s a lot of help needed out there.”

With her business, located on North New Braunfels Avenue just down the street from the gates of Fort Sam Houston, Harper has been helping the community for 33 years.

That includes keeping her customers happy, as well as feeding the hungry all across the city.

“I asked God, ‘What could I do to give back what you gave to me?,’” she said. “God gave me this vision, and he has made provision.”

Life, though, hasn’t always been easy for Harper.

She was born Alice Olivia Martinez in New Orleans, the second of 16 children.

Harper said learning to cook was a necessity back then, but it now serves her well.

“I cook as if I was going to eat it. You’re not going to eat what I won’t eat,” she said, explaining her high standards in the kitchen.

Proof of her successful formula, trophies, awards, and honors, line glass cases, shelves, and the walls of her restaurant.

Still, Harper said she is not in business for the glory.

In addition to reaching out to the hungry, she also takes in people who need a second chance in life by giving them jobs.

Harper earned her GED as an adult, then found work as a civilian aircraft mechanic at Kelly Air Force Base.

“I worked on F15s, F16s, F100s,108s,107s,” Harper recalled.

After nearly 22 years, she retired from that position, giving up fixing planes for fixing plates of food.

Her work in the community throughout the years has not gone unnoticed.

In honor of her milestone birthday and her 33 years in business, Precinct 4 Constable Kathryn “Kat” Brown and Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert recently issued proclamations in Harper’s name.
