Animate objects onto and off a slide in Keynote on Mac

To make your presentation more dynamic, you can animate the text and objects on a slide so they appear, disappear, or both. For example, you can make text appear on the slide one bullet point at a time, or make an image of a ball bounce onto the slide.

Object animations are called build effects . Different build effects can be applied depending on whether the object is a text box, chart, table, shape, or type of media (photo, audio, or video).

Moving an object onto a slide is building in . Moving an object off a slide is building out .

Animate an object onto and off a slide

On the slide, click to select the object or text box you want to animate.

Animate the object onto the slide: Click the Build In tab.

Click Add an Effect, then choose an animation.

To set animation options, such as the duration and direction of the animation, use the controls in the sidebar.

The options you see depend on the animation. When there’s more than one build in or build out animation, you can set the order in which they play.

Build objects one piece at a time

You can have tables, charts, lists, or blocks of text appear on a slide all at once or piece by piece. For example, you can have a pie chart appear one wedge at a time or a list appear one item at a time. You can also have these items exit a slide as a whole or piece by piece.

Select a table, chart, or block of text (for example, a list or text with some paragraphs).

Click the Delivery pop-up menu, then choose how you want the object to build.

For example, you might choose By Bullet Group if you want a list of bullets to appear one at a time, but have indented bullets appear at the same time as their top-level bullet.

To change the order in which the bullets or paragraphs appear, click the pop-up menus next to “Build from,” then choose a bullet or paragraph to start and end with.

To see a preview of the animation, click Preview.

By default, each build is set to appear when you click. That means if a pie chart has five wedges, you need to click five times for the whole chart to be visible on the slide. To change the timing of these builds, Change the order and timing of builds in Keynote on Mac .

Remove an animation

On the slide, click to select the object with the animation you want to remove.

Remove all Build In, Build Out, or Action animations from an object: Click the Build In, Build Out, or Action tab at the top of the sidebar. Click Change, then choose None.

Remove a specific animation from an object: Click Build Order at the bottom of the sidebar. In the Build Order window, click to select the build you want to remove, then press Delete on your keyboard.

Animations  can help you build suspense or hold attention with your audience in a presentation. Using animation to reveal a key fact or chart, for example, can make an impact. Bringing an essential element on a slide with animation is like saving the punchline for a joke for the perfect moment.

When it comes to building a presentation, I find myself using  Apple Keynote. Keynote is Apple's answer to the popular PowerPoint presentation software and features one of the easiest-to-use interfaces in any presentation app. That ease-of-use leads users to try Keynote for all types of design, like UI animations for example (in this post from Smashing Magazine ). That includes easy-to-apply animations that can deliver impactful reveals or move objects on your slide.

In this tutorial, we're going to tackle Keynote animations. Apple's Keynote software is one of the most accessible tools for building presentations, and its animation capabilities are no exception. You can even create cartoons using Keynote , as in this article from Cult of Mac .

At the end of this tutorial, you'll be a master of Keynote animation. You'll know how to apply animations to objects, charts, graphs and more so that you can grab and hold the audience's attention.

Create Your First Keynote Animation

This tutorial is going to focus on Keynote object animations. That means taking components of a slide like the text, images, or charts on a slide and animating them. Animations  between  slides like fades or dissolves are known as  transitions,  and we won't include them in this animation tutorial.

To get started with Keynote, start off by finding the  Animate  button that's in the upper right corner. Click on it to open up the Animation panel, the key to controlling all animations in your Keynote slides.

Now, note that there are three buttons on the Animation panel that'll control how your objects behave on the slide. Here's how to think about them:

• Build in  animations will animate objects onto your slide. The object could fade in or fly in from a side of the slide.
• Action animations will somehow shift or change the object on the slide. That could include resizing or transforming it or moving its position on the slide. 
• Build out  animations will remove an object from a slide, such as fading it out or using a flip effect to disappear from the slide.

No matter which animation option you choose, start off by just selecting an object on the slide. Then, select the tab that corresponds to your desired animation effect.

Now, click on  Add an Effect.  A new drop-down window appears, and you'll see a list of animation options that you can choose from. This is where the fun begins! As you hover over the possible animation options in the menu, click on the  Preview  option next to them to see the animation options in action.

Once you've settled on an animation option that fits your slide, click on it from the dropdown list. There are plenty of animation options that you can choose from to animate your chart. I typically find it best to stick to simple animations so that the content isn't lost in the shuffle of the animation.

That's it! You've applied your very first animation. All you've got to do now is repeat the process with any other objects that benefit from a bit of animation.

While you are adding animations to your Keynote sides, it's important to preview them to make sure you're achieving the look you want. You can always click on  Play  on the Keynote menu bar to preview the Keynote presentation altogether, including any animations that have been applied.

When it comes to Keynote animations, less is usually more. By advocating for animations in your presentation, I'm certainly not suggesting that you animate every object. Focus the animation on critical elements that tell the story of your slide.

1. How to Customize Animations

After you've added the animation, you might want to adjust specific settings like the speed or style of the animation.

The available options will differ based upon the animation that you choose, but a few settings are typical, such as the  Duration,  or speed of the animation. You can pull this slider to the left to animate the object more quickly, or to the right for slower animations. 

The pre-built animation settings are just a starting point. Tweaking the duration or other settings on this panel will provide total control over the object animation.

2. How to Use Custom Keynote Animated Templates

The animations that we've looked at so far are smooth to apply and solid, but there are more advanced options that you can add for an extra bit of shine. That means using custom Keynote templates with pre-designed animations that far supersede the single-click options.

For me, I frequently source custom Keynote templates from Envato Elements . If you haven't heard about it, this is an all-you-can-download platform that offers access to unlimited creative assets. That includes advanced Keynote templates that feature incredible animations.

An example of this is the Anim8 Keynote template .  The author of this template has combined countless mini-animations for extremely smooth effects. This is far better than anything you can create quickly with Keynote on your own. Use these pre-built animations with your slides to create advanced animations in a fraction of the time.

Sequence Keynote Animations

Now that you've added several animations in Keynote, you might be wondering how to sequence them. On slides that have multiple animations, it's easy to get the objects out of order. Let's learn how to sequence Keynote animations to change the order of animations.

In Keynote, you can control animation sequences on the same Animate tab that you used to add the animations initially. 

In my example below, I've animated a few options on the same slide. But, the order that they appear in isn't entirely correct. To re-sequence the animations, click on  Build Order  at the bottom of the Animate panel to open the sequencing panel.

Now, you'll see a new window titled  Build Order.  In this window, you can just click and drag and drop the objects into the order you want the objects to play in. Just press  Preview  at the bottom of the window to see the animation in action. As you click on the boxes, the object on your slide will light up to let you know which animation you're controlling.

This is also an excellent opportunity to change how the animations will trigger, choosing between  On Click  or  With...  to control when the animations play.

Amazing collection of resources! I'm definitely going to explore the animating 3D objects in Keynote more - that's so cool! I think I might have grade 4 students use it when they learn about the human body. Maybe I'll even have them export the video to iMovie, and use picture-in-picture to have them explain their learning!

Great idea… and if you go on sketchfab and download usdz models of parts of humain body….you can add these 3d models to keynote… Your comment makes me thing… I have another student working in reality composer now to explain body parts… she added in humain organs, added in her voice and posters made in Canva and pins to indicate to touch certain things in her 3d environnement to hear her voice). Thanks Mary… I must admit the all about me project was their favorite project (and they did many). We started on day one of the school year, worked on and off on it, and presented it to parents and family members and the VIP’s they decided to invite towards the end of the year. A full year of reflecting on who they are, and on what they were learning about their strenghts and weaknesses. A full year to work on finding stategies to improve. It helped students work on personal growth all year.

Tutorial: How to make animated videos with keynote

Many creators are hoping to create professional-looking videos for your online course, but are not sure where to start. Using Keynote (or its Microsoft equivalent, PowerPoint) is a simple and fun way to make beautiful videos at home . It’s relatively easy to make an animated videos with Keynote. We’ll show you how.

Transforming Keynote to video

Animation on Keynote is kind of magical. And it’s way more powerful than you might think.

For example, we made this colorful white-boarding presentation all on Keynote. But, you probably couldn’t tell right away by just looking at it. Just think about all the weeks or months you’d have to spend learning complex animation software to get the same results. Even the process of selecting animation software is overwhelming, and can be a huge barrier to new course creators.

You can harness this power too. And it’s not nearly as difficult as you might think. Below, we’ll walk you through step-by-step how to make animated videos with Keynote (without it even looking like Keynote at all).

Step 1: Make your presentation

Create a new keynote.

Create a new Keynote presentation to start. You’ll see that a new Keynote theme usually begins in “standard” size. Standard isn’t good for video, so you want wide instead.

Select “Wide” at the top and choose the theme you want to begin with.

Set up the right dimensions

Before you start changing around colors, or adding text and images, this is the most important action you’ll take. Customize your dimensions so they fit YouTube’s high-quality resolution. This will also upload seamlessly onto Teachable’s platform.

To do this, check out the righthand bar of your Keynote program. Select Document . Then you’ll see a category below named Slide Size . Click on that, and toggle to Custom Slide Size.

Next, enter the optimal custom slide size. We highly recommend 1920×1080 , which we will consistently use throughout the course of this tutorial on how make animated videos with Keynote.

Dimensions are really important. If you don’t get them right the first time, you’ll spend hours fixing it later.

Customize for brand colors and fonts

Now that your dimensions are set up, you can start on the design portion. It’s easy to customize Keynote slides to fit your brand colors and fonts.

You’ll find this customization on the right hand corner of your screen under Format > Edit Master Slide .

Editing the master slide means that you’ll pick the default colors and fonts for all the slides. This will make your life easier in the long run, because you won’t have to change font sizes, colors, and background colors every time you create a new slide.

You’ll get this warning because editing master slides will change all slides. Because you haven’t made any slides yet, though, this will be an asset instead of a problem. After you’ve selected your brand fonts, colors, backgrounds and overlays, you can finally get down to creating your course content.

Add images and text

Keynote leaves you plenty of versatility to add shapes, photos, charts, GIFs.

We especially love using their “Shape” section to animate our own videos. You can select as many of these icons as you want, then customize the color or add dimension.

For the SEO course we created, we used the free Keynote icons under “Shape” to animate the introductory video. Here’s an example of how it can look:

Play around with animation

Once you’ve added all the imagery and text you want for each slide, you’ve finally arrived to the part that makes this program special: animation.

This is where you can bring your keynote slides to life and make them look like a professionally animated video. Think of this as a shortcut to making professional, fun, highly engaging video, with just a few clicks of a button.

Click on the piece of text or image that you want to animate. Make sure you’ve toggled to the Animate button in the right hand corner, which sits between Format and Document.

Here are what the Keynote animation features mean:

• Build in – Whenever you build something in, it means you’re introducing that image or text to the viewer for the first time. The build in action you choose will bring your selected object into the slide.
• Action – The action button is for any object that is already in the slide. It won’t appear, it will already be there on the screen. You’ll use this feature when you want to animate or emphasize something that’s already on the screen.
• Build out – When you build out an object, you make that object leave the screen. The object will already be on the screen, and this exits with your build out of choice.

The best part? There are all different kinds of animations. Toggle around and hit the preview button to see what they’re like.

They’ll make your selected text or objects bounce, fly, go up in flames, burst into fireworks, or wipe away. With such a variety, you can make your videos look way more fun and engaging.

For example, in this part of my video, we used the transitions Move In , Scale , and Move Out . We also checked the Bounce box to give the objects a little pep.

Other features worth mentioning when learning how to make animated videos with Keynote:

• Duration – Duration means how long the selected animation will last. You can choose between a fraction of a second and a whole minute. Play around and see what pacing fits your video best.
• Direction – From which direction will your object appear? With most text and images, you can choose any different corner of the slide.
• Order – This part is important. You don’t want your supporting bullet to enter the slide before your headline. You can select your chosen object and then decide its order when building in and building out. Test all of your slides together to make sure they pop up in the right order.

Note that we’ve put this in GIF format for easier viewing, but the frame rates are seamless and clean in the actual video.

Step 2: Change your screen formatting

Once you’ve completed your animation, you’re ready to prepare for recording. Many people hit snags in this process because the format of their screen is different from the format of their slides.

First, download SwitchResX , or a similar screen resizing software.

Once you’ve installed it, you can temporarily change the resolution size of your screen. Go to SwitchResX > Color LCD > Current Resolutions . You’ll see what your screen is already at (mine is usually set at 1680×1050).

Remember how we formatted the Keynote slides to 1920×1080 in the beginning? You’ll select the same screen resolution here to make sure your slides and your screen are perfectly aligned.

You’ll notice your screen resolution shift and things will look a little different. Don’t worry, that just means it’s working. Now, you’re ready to record.

Step 3: Select your recording method

There are several different ways to record your Keynote to video once it’s ready for action. Which method you choose largely depends on your preferences, but I’ll list some pros and cons of each.

Keynote recorder

As it turns out, Keynote has its very own recording app.

• You can read your slideshow notes while you’re recording, without them showing up in the end product.
• You’ll be taken to a recording “staging” area that will help you see your Keynote animations and slides one step ahead. That means you’re less likely to flub up your lines.
• It might be hard to set up an external mic if you would prefer your own while you’re recording the slides.
• You’ll have to do a proper recording all in one shot. It’s harder to redo recordings with this feature.

Screenflow is an app that can simultaneously record your screen and your computer audio at the same time.

• Allows you to record your voice and slides at the same time.
• Many people find easy to use.
• Can be buggy.

Consider recording the screenflow first and then bring in audio recorded from an external mic in later.

You can also see your Keynote program while using QuickTime. All you have to do is enter the program and then select File > New Screen Recording . You can select the entire screen instead of cropping because you’ve already formatted the screen correctly.

Once you’ve completed recording a video, make sure to export it in the correct dimensions as well. (See why we wanted you to know about all of them!)

For example, with QuickTime, once the recording is over, you’ll want to save the file in the correct dimensions as well. You can do this by going to File > Export As > 1080 . This fits the YouTube-style resolution we’ve been consistently using throughout.

Step 4: Choose your assembling method

Now, it’s time to mix your animated slides and audio together.

If you’ve decided to go with a computer mic and recorded this all together on Keynote, you may even skip this step. (We do recommend that you use an external mic or headphone mic if possible. You can read more about recording quality sound here .)

If you’d like to add intro and outtro slides, music, or other effects, you’ll need video editing software to complete the job. Here are some basic options, along with the pros and cons.

Apple Movie

Apple Movie comes with Macs and has an incredibly simple user interface.

• Very beginner friendly.
• Drag and drop makes it easy to visualize where your animated video and audio are aligning.
• Overly simple. Doesn’t allow you to edit your video in a more advanced way.
• Can sometimes be more slow and clunky than more advanced programs.

Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro is the industry standard for video editing. The industry standard used to be Final Cut Pro, until their product became too similar to Apple Movie.

• Offers advanced options for special effects, audio gain, and lighting.
• Seamlessly integrates with AfterEffects, Audition, and all other Adobe software.
• Is easier to layer narration, music, sound effects, and different types of visuals.
• Costs money for a subscription.
• Has highly advanced features that can be harder for beginners to understand.
• Can be easy for beginners to accidentally mess up and damage their files.

Overall, the choice of video editor is yours! Do your research to see which one would best fit your needs and your process to make animated videos with Keynote.

Step 5: Triple check your dimensions

We’ve talked about dimensions a lot in this post. But this is tip a million and one: Check your dimensions throughout every step of the process when it comes to understanding the process to make animated videos with Keynote. Here is where you’ve ensured your dimensions are 1920×1080 so far:

• Keynote slides
• Screen resolution before recording
• Saving the completed screen recording at the correct resolution

Next, you’ll have to look out for these, too:

• Setting up your video editor for the correct dimensions
• Exporting video for the correct dimensions
• Uploading for the correct dimensions

Step 6: Upload and share

You’ve created your slides. You’ve learned how to make animated videos with Keynote. And then you’ve edited and uploaded them with the perfect dimensions in mind. Once you complete these steps, you’ll have gorgeous, animated videos built for an exceptional online course .

As a frequent keynote speaker, I take the responsibility to inspire seriously. I strive to pull together the big picture, galvanize action, educate, and motivate my audience to leave and conquer whatever challenges they face.

These presentations shouldn’t be lectures. Speakers should engage and interact with you with vibrancy and energy. They should raise and answer questions, and leave you with compelling takeaways . But to get the most out of the ones you attend, you’ll need to do your part as well. Here’s how.

Do Your Homework

It’s OK to just show up, take a seat, and listen to a keynote presentation. In fact, that’s probably what most people do. But if you want to get the most out of the experience, come prepared.

Conference schedules will feature speakers’ bios and keynote topics. It will be infinitely easier to connect with presenters if you know something about their background. What about them can you relate to, admire, or want to learn more about? Read what they’ve published and what’s been published about them. Finding that type of information is fairly easy with a quick online search.

You should also research the topic slated to be addressed. Having a grasp of it going in will help you to understand the presentation better and to ask more informed questions if you choose to. And if the keynote is virtual, be prepared to turn on your camera to focus on the presentation rather than multitasking. That leads me to my next point.

Audience engagement isn’t just a marketing strategy. A great keynote should raise questions or prompt comments from the audience. As a presenter, it’s my job to draw the audience into what I’m talking about, pushing the door wide open to interaction. If I look out and see people dozing off or checking their social media feeds, I’m not doing my job.

But you also have a job to do. You need to engage in the presentation to get the most out of it. Note questions as they come to you, so you don’t forget them when it’s time for the Q&A. You should also jot down your ideas for applying what the speaker’s saying to your job. If, for example, the speaker talks about the value of role play in team projects, don’t dismiss it because you aren’t a D&D aficionado. Figure out how you can apply the principles of it to your team.

Take advantage of the opportunity to ask the presenter specific questions about your unique situation. That sort of engagement could cost thousands of dollars if you were to hire the speaker as a consultant. Don’t miss the chance to get some free direction. Most presenters truly enjoy sharing their wisdom with curious minds.

Share the Wealth

Keynote attendees should be like sponges, absorbing all the new ideas an event worth its salt will provide. If you soak up some wisdom, don’t keep it to yourself. Share what you’ve learned with others while everything is shiny and fresh.

Discuss what you learned with friends, old and new, who were also in the room. Whatever the speaker imparted will grow exponentially during this type of discussion. Note the highlights, the kernels of knowledge, and the takeaways the presenter offered you. Then make sure you volunteer those takeaways to your colleagues back at the office, even if you aren’t required to deliver a report.

Not everyone you work with can attend keynote presentations. If you’re chosen to, take back what you’ve learned. Just remember, you can only share it if you gleaned the most out of it while you were there. So, pay close attention.

Time and money are inevitable investments in attending a keynote presentation. If you’re going to make it, make it count. Prepare before, engage during, and share what you’ve learned when you leave. CLEVELAND, Ohio - It was a celebratory and emotional afternoon at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Thursday as family, friends and fans of Eric Carmen and the Raspberries were on hand as the late singer-songwriter and his band were awarded the City of Cleveland’s second annual Music Keynote to the City by City Councilman Brian Kazy.

Kazy also officially declared Sunday, August 11, to be Eric Carmen Day in Cleveland. Carmen, who died at 74 in March, would have been 75 on Sunday. To coincide with the celebratory weekend, Arista, Carmen’s former label, released a new digital compilation, “And Now, Eric Carmen: The Arista Collection,” featuring 25 tracks, including demos, rare recordings, and live tracks, as well as two unreleased songs from the “Tonight You’re Mine” sessions. Awkward! Google Gemini fails twice during a live demo

Google 's AI-powered assistant, Gemini , is a bit of a diva.

During Tuesday's  Made by Google  event, Gemini AI's live demo failed twice in a row, resulting in the presenter, Dave Citron, saying, "Let's see the demo spirits are with us today." On the third attempt, Gemini completed the task at hand: checking his calendar to see if he's free for Sabrina Carpenter 's upcoming show in San Francisco.

The live demo aimed to demonstrate Gemini's new capabilities on Android to connect with Google Calendar , Tasks, and Keep.

Before the demo failed, Citron clearly stated, "All the demos we are doing today are live," with a smile. He took a photo of a Sabrina Carpenter poster held up by co-presenter Jess Carpenter and asked Gemini, "Check my calendar and see if I'm free when she's coming to San Francisco this year." But the Gemini briefly loaded and then reset. Citron tried again with the same result. It's only when he pulled out a different device and tried for the third time that Gemini informed him of his availability to see the "Espresso" singer live. It took Gemini 20 seconds to determine he didn't have anything on his schedule.

Paris Olympics: rival badminton stars Chiharu Shida and Tan Ning share animated friendship

Chiharu Shida, dubbed Japan’s “badminton goddess”, has posted photos with Chinese rival Tan Ning on her Instagram story, showing that on-court competitors can be off-court friends.

The duo, who faced each other in the Games’ women’s doubles badminton semi-final, have posed for a series of playful photos in which they mimic cartoon characters Judy and Nick from Zootopia , as well as My Melody and Kuromi – two rabbit-like characters from Japanese animation.

“I saw a lot of these on Chinese social media platforms, so I want to try and have asked her to pose with me,” the 27-year-old Japanese shuttler wrote under the photo of the Japanese rabbit character.

“Although we yelled at each other on court, we are close to each other outside the court. She is a very interesting and cute kid.”

For the other set, Shida wrote: “We couldn’t help but laugh. We reshot it many times. Memories.”

Tan shared the two stories on her Instagram with the caption “you [are] cute more than me”. (original quote from Tan in English)

Tan, together with teammate Liu Shengshu, beat Shida and Nami Matsuyama 2-0 to reach the final, where they lost to No 1 seed and compatriots Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan.

Shida and Matsuyama took home the bronze after beating the Malaysian pair Pearly Tan and Muralitharan Thinaah 21-11, 21-11 in 44 minutes.

Standing on the podium for the award presentation, Shida was spotted by fans winking and smiling at Tan.

Shida’s instagram stories have been shared on Chinese social media too, with many expressing surprise for the duo’s friendship and some asking Tan not to steal their goddess Shida from them.

“Let go of Tan. Let me be your (photo) partner,” one wrote.
