Estructura y recomendaciones para que tu opinion essay sea perfecto

Un opinion essay es un escrito formal en el que su autor puede plasmar su opini贸n sobre un tema en espec铆fico. La idea es que no solo presentes tu punto de vista, sino que adem谩s argumentes tu posici贸n, ya sea a favor o contra, con datos s贸lidos para poder generar una conclusi贸n final. Adem谩s de presentar los argumentos a favor, tambi茅n es importante presentar la visi贸n contraria a nuestra posici贸n. Este tipo de art铆culo es com煤n en las pruebas para obtener certificaciones de ingl茅s, en niveles como B1, B2 o C1. 

Recomendaciones para escribir un opinion essay

Antes de conocer la estructura para escribir un opinion essay en ingl茅s, veamos algunas recomendaciones que te ayudar谩n:

• Usa siempre un lenguaje formal , en este tipo de art铆culo no es v谩lido el lenguaje informal. No uses contracciones, phrasal verbs , ni idioms .
• Utiliza conectores que te permitan unir un p谩rrafo con otro con sentido. Evita repetirlos constantemente.
• Para redactar un opinion essay efectivamente, tu ingl茅s debe ser bueno , sino est谩s en un nivel intermedio o avanzado es mejor que te prepares antes de hacerlo.
• Cada p谩rrafo deber铆a tener una idea principal a desarrollar . Evita p谩rrafos y oraciones largas que cansan al lector.
• Antes de comenzar tu art铆culo define cu谩l ser谩 tu opini贸n , esto te ayudar谩 a estructurarlo adecuadamente. Esta posici贸n debes dejarla clara desde el inicio de tu escrito. 
•  Para hacer este tipo de art铆culos debes investigar ya que necesitas datos, hechos, fuentes que sustenten tu posici贸n.
• Escribe en un solo tiempo verbal , si es en presente simple , mantenlo en todo el art铆culo. 
• El t铆tulo es un punto clave en tu escrito, debes pensarlo bien. Evita titular con una pregunta. En el t铆tulo debe quedar claro tu opini贸n sobre el tema a tratar. 
• Mant茅n la objetividad en tu escrito, a pesar de que es un art铆culo de opini贸n no debes dejarte llevar solo por las emociones, trata de ser objetivo.
• Antes de escribir ten claro el objetivo de tu ensayo y el p煤blico al que va dirigido. Haz un bosquejo de las ideas principales, selecciona las m谩s importantes y descarta aquellas que no son v谩lidas.

Estructura para escribir un opinion essay

Antes de comenzar a escribir un ensayo opinion essay debes conocer la estructura correcta, que se divide b谩sicamente en tres puntos: introducci贸n, cuerpo y conclusi贸n. Veamos en detalle uno por uno para que comiences a escribir tu propio ensayo de opini贸n:

Introducci贸n

En este primer punto de nuestro escrito debemos ubicar al lector sobre qu茅 leer谩 . Como su nombre lo dice, la introducci贸n hace referencia a introducir nuestra visi贸n, es decir, dar una idea de qu茅 tratar谩 nuestro ensayo.

En este pre谩mbulo debes exponer el tema a tratar y enganchar al lector. Para esto puedes ayudarte con cifras, datos o hechos reales que sean atractivos y determinantes. Si tu introducci贸n no es lo suficientemente atractiva tendr谩s pocas posibilidades de que el lector contin煤e. As铆 que debes esmerarte por comenzar fuerte, claro y contundente. Para comenzar a introducir estos datos o hechos te dejamos algunas frases en ingl茅s que te funcionar谩n en tu opinion essay :

Cuerpo principal

Tras realizar la introducci贸n debemos comenzar a desarrollar nuestro art铆culo de opini贸n. Aqu铆 debemos exponer todos los argumentos que sustentan nuestra opini贸n. La recomendaci贸n es trabajar por cada p谩rrafo un argumento. Recuerda que los argumentos pueden ser en contra o favor de una posici贸n, todo depender谩 de la postura que te plantees asumir. 

Lo ideal es que comiences tu primer p谩rrafo del cuerpo del ensayo con el argumento m谩s fuerte, el que sustenta tu opini贸n. En el segundo p谩rrafo podr谩s exponer el segundo argumento m谩s importantes y as铆 vas sucesivamente explicando por p谩rrafo cada argumento en orden de prioridad. Normalmente los ensayos se componen de aproximadamente cinco p谩rrafos.

Para que tus p谩rrafos sean f谩ciles de leer debes estructurarlos bien. Evita las oraciones largas y p谩rrafos complejos. Ve al grano sin dejar de usar un lenguaje formal y siempre con un argumento que justifique lo que est谩s escribiendo. Para expresar opini贸n tendr谩s que usar algunas frases que te ayudar谩n a presentar tu punto de vista sobre el tema que est谩s escribiendo. 隆Toma nota!

Todas estas frases te ayudar谩n al momento que expreses tu opini贸n en ingl茅s en tu art铆culo de opinion essay . Debes escoger la m谩s apropiada seg煤n sea el caso, como ves hay unas m谩s formales y otras m谩s coloquiales y directas. Para que no siempre uses las mismas, puedes ir variando en cada p谩rrafo a medida que vayas explicando los argumentos.

Veamos algunos ejemplos para expresar opini贸n:

In my opinion, educator salaries need to be improved. / En mi opini贸n, es necesario mejorar los sueldos de los educadores. From my point of view, you have to regulate internet content. / Desde mi punta vista hay que regular los contenidos de internet. I disagree with current public policies. / No estoy de acuerdo con las pol铆ticas p煤blicas vigentes.

Para poder estructurar tus p谩rrafos con sentido utiliza como te mencionamos arriba los famosos conectores. Aqu铆 te dejamos algunos 煤tiles, pero te invitamos a leer nuestro art铆culo de conectores en ingl茅s (linking words) donde encontrar谩s much铆simos m谩s.

Hay much铆simos conectores que puedes usar, no uses siempre los mismos. De igual forma en la lista anterior te dejamos algunos que sirven para estructurar el orden de tus ideas. Aqu铆 tienes algunos ejemplos:

If you can consume energy, you can do work and, therefore , create more. / Si eres capaz de consumir energ铆a, puedes trabajar y, por lo tanto, crear m谩s. It’s very romantic, even if the language is a bit stilted. / Es muy rom谩ntico, incluso si el lenguaje es un poco forzado. But above all , I think it lost touch with its subjects. / Pero sobre todo, creo que perdi贸 el contacto con sus temas.

En la 煤ltima parte de tu opinion essay deber谩s realizar una conclusi贸n que concentre las ideas principales de tu escrito y termine de reforzar tu opini贸n al respecto. Muchas veces los estudiantes subestiman la conclusi贸n y no se esfuerzan en hacer un buen cierre, lo cual es un grave error. Tu conclusi贸n debe ser igual de importante que el resto del escrito, as铆 que no lo tomes a la ligera solo por poner fin. 

Aqu铆 te dejamos unas frases 煤tiles que te servir谩n al momento de indicar la conclusi贸n de tu opinion essay :

Veamos a continuaci贸n un ejemplo de un opinion essay partiendo de una pregunta ya formulada, es decir no partimos de un tema libre. Este es m谩s un estilo de prueba oficial, por ejemplo IELTS, donde te dan un tema en concreto y deber谩s presentar tu posici贸n al respecto:

It is argued that earning lots of money has more significance to people than being content in their work. This essay totally disagrees with that statement. I believe that people are increasingly concerned about the risk of stress-related ill-health frequently experienced by people in highly paid positions and they care more about feeling fulfilled at work. Employees who earn a large income are generally under significant mental and emotional pressure to perform well and achieve targets. This causes many individuals to suffer high levels of stress which can result in mental health problems. This happened to my uncle. He used to boast about his huge salary but the boss kept increasing his sales targets and in the end, the stress became too great and he had a nervous breakdown. Now he regrets being driven by the money. Having a job that they enjoy doing, and in which they feel valued, is a major concern for most of the modern workforce. A significant number of people are giving up well-paid positions to do jobs which pay less but that they find more enjoyable and less stressful. I am an example of this myself. A year ago I left the teaching profession because the workload had become too great, and I am now a gardener. I feel really fulfilled in this work and I am much more relaxed and happy even though I earn far less money. In conclusion, for a high percentage of the population, earning a substantial wage is less important than job satisfaction because of the negative effects of work-related stress and the desire to feel happy and fulfilled at work. (272 words)

The Cambridge C1 Advanced is an excellent qualification to aim for if you’re thinking of studying or working abroad. It’s recognised by universities and governments all over the world and also helps you prove your language skills to future employers.

One of the most demanding parts of the exam is Part 1 of the Writing paper, which includes writing an essay. For many of you, this won’t come naturally… especially in another language.

So, to give you the best chance at success, we’ve created this in-depth guide full of Cambridge C1 Advanced Writing tips and useful language to get you producing excellent essays in no time.

C1 Advanced Writing Requirements

The C1 Advanced Writing exam has two writing parts, which you must complete in 90 minutes. Both parts have a word limit of between 220-260 words. We recommend getting lots of writing practice under these conditions!

Part 1 is always a discursive essay . It requires you to think about arguments for and against a topic.

Part 2 is a situationally based writing task. This could be a letter , an email , a report , a proposal or a review and you have three options to choose from.

Today, we’ll be looking at how to do your best in part 1.

Before you begin

When you turn over the paper and begin Writing Part 1, take some time to read the task instructions. Identify all parts of the question, underlining which parts are obligatory and noting which parts are optional.

Let’s take a look at an example question!

Remember, you don’t have to use the opinions expressed in the box, but they may help you to get the ball rolling . Also, you only have to talk about two of the options given, not all three.

Make a plan

Take ten minutes to lay out your ideas. Make a pros and cons list for each of the three options and then decide which two you feel most confident with. Here’s some things you might come up with, can you think of any more?

Structure your essay

The essence of a good essay is a clear structure.

Introduction

Here you want to introduce the topic in your own words. Your first line should also grab the reader’s attention, then you should paraphrase the question. Finally, try using a statistic or a rhetorical question. This will make them want to read on, right?

Paragraph 1

Discuss the first option you’ve chosen. Include a good topic sentence and remember to give reasons for your answer. Describe some of the advantages, and even some of the disadvantages too. This will give a well-balanced argument.

Paragraph 2

Here’s where you introduce the second option. Again, try to present both sides of the argument and give reasons for your ideas. Gradually work towards the conclusion.

State your final opinion. This should be a summary of the rest of the essay and point clearly to which option you think is the most important. Do not introduce any new arguments at this stage. The conclusion is where you tie-up any loose ends .

This is an advanced piece of writing, so make sure your choice of language reflects it. You will get marked for accuracy, however, occasional errors can still be present as long as they do not impede understanding. So don’t play it too safe . This is your opportunity to show what you can do, so take some risks and have fun with it!

In the writing paper you should use a range of vocabulary, including less common lexis. Brainstorm some vocabulary related to the topic. Take your time to think of nouns and compound nouns that you know at C1 level. Really let your vocabulary sparkle .

No one likes a broken record . Find synonyms for simple words. You want to use a variety of language, and try not to repeat yourself too much. Check out these different ways of saying the same thing:

advantage = benefit, positive, upside

disadvantage = downside, drawback

effect = influence, impact, result, outcome

problem = issue, challenge, difficulty, obstacle, setback, complication

important = valuable, essential, beneficial

expensive = costly, dear, high-priced, extortionate

cheap = inexpensive, affordable, economical

big = great, large, sizeable, considerable, wide, vast

small = slight, tiny, little

Experiment with different grammatical forms. At this level you’re expected to have a good grasp on the grammar. You should use a range of simple and complex grammatical forms with control and flexibility. So challenge yourself with some of these…

• Conditionals
• Modal verbs
• Passive with reporting verbs
• Cleft sentences
• Comparatives
• Relative clauses

To make your essay flow it’s best to use some key phrases. These will link all your ideas together, and help it sound semi-formal. Take a look at the expressions below. Why not use some in your next essay?

What the examiners are looking for

When writing your essay, bear in mind what you’ll be marked on:

Have you answered all parts of the question? Is everything relevant to the question?

Communicative Achievement

Is the style and tone appropriate? Remember it should be semi-formal and neutral.

Organisation

Does it follow a logical order? Have you used paragraphs and linking devices?

Are you using a variety of grammar and vocabulary? Is it accurate?

Some final tips

Avoid contractions (I’m, they’re, we’re) as this is a formal writing.

Don’t use first person pronouns (I, my, our, us).

Use model answers to practise fixed expressions.

¿Cómo escribir un essay para el C1 Advanced (CAE)?

La parte 1 del writing CAE trata de un escribir un essay demostrando tu alto nivel de inglés. ¡Pero no tengas miedo! Lo importante es conocer la estructura de esta parte para que luego puedas escribir fluidamente. Aquí encontrarás:

El  essay es un escrito académico, por lo general un documento redactado tras una actividad realizada en clase: por ejemplo, un debate, una conferencia o el visionado de un documental. En el C1 Advanced (CAE), tenemos que dar una opinión sobre diferentes temas, argumentando cada uno de ellos y expresando nuestra opinión. Tendrás que escribir alrededor de 220 a 260 palabras defendiendo solo dos puntos en vez de tres.

A partir de la lectura de un texto, se debe escribir una composición con base en dos de los aspectos allí tratados . Tu misión es:

• Definir el aspecto que te parece más importante
• Justificar tu opinión mediante una argumentación pertinente

Si lo deseas, puedes utilizar las opiniones expresadas, pero con la condición de reformularlas con tus propias palabras.

En el enunciado, encontrarás todos los elementos necesarios para llevar a cabo la redacción:

• El contexto
• Los detalles (3 aspectos abordados o 3 opiniones expresadas durante la actividad)
• Las instrucciones

Como puedes darte cuenta, se te guiará paso a paso. La idea no es tenderte una trampa, sino más bien, proporcionarte las condiciones necesarias para que puedas atestar de tu nivel C1.

¿Cuál es la estructura del essay ?

Para el examen, es importante tener un texto bien organizado y claro para que los examinadores puedan entender lo que estamos defendiendo y cual es nuestra opinión. Por eso tienes que seguir la siguiente estructura:

• Introducción: en esta parte tienes que explicar brevemente el tema o la pregunta que vas a tratar para situar al lector en el contexto. Introduce entonces los temas que vas a tratar, pero no des tu opinión todavía.
• Cuerpo: tienes que explicar cada punto en un párrafo distinto y justificarlo con ejemplos. Argumenta de forma clara y estructurada. Trata de siempre comenzar con una frase que deje claro el tema del párrafo.
• Conclusión: resume y da tu opinión sobre el tema dado.

¿Qué lenguaje usar para escribir el essay ?

En el C1 Advanced, tienes que utilizar un lenguaje formal . Esto quiere decir que no puedes emplear abreviaciones ni expresiones coloquiales. Trata de siempre utilizar conectores, adverbios y compound nouns . Recuerda que esta parte evalúa tu nivel  C1 en inglés, se espera que uses palabras de nivel avanzado.

Ejemplo de enunciado

Contexto:  You have just attended a meeting at your university regarding which faculties should receive funding cuts for the next academic year.  Which university department should have its funding cut? Some options expressed in the discussion - The Art department - The science department - The foreign language department - The science department gets a lot of money in research grants. - Everyone speaks English, so foreign languages are unnecessary. - Creativity is necessary for a society to flourish. Instrucción : Write an essay discussing two of the opinions given in the discussions. You should give your own opinion as to which department is less worthy of funding, giving reasons to support your answer.

Ejemplo de respuesta

In terms of which department should receive less funding, my personal opinion is that the art department is the least important among the choices given. While it is indeed important for a society to foster creative people, as mentioned in the third opinion, the single most important thing that a society can do is to invest in industries and fields of study which will create material wealth. Both science and foreign languages are more likely to generate business for the country in question. There is also nothing stopping people from being creative in other ways, or developing their creativity outside of their regular fields of study. The Foreign Language department is a crucial component of any school. Although it is true that many countries’ populations have increasingly high levels of English, as per the second opinion, it is still immensely valuable to be able to communicate in other languages, to aid cultural communication and enable frictionless trade between countries. After all, not everyone in China, say, or Oman, can speak English perfectly. An ability in those languages would enable more businesses to import and export goods with those nations. Thus, it is misguided to assume that, because everyone can speak English, there is no value in learning any others. Compared to art, foreign languages have much more utility, and are therefore more deserving of funds.

Consejos para aprobar la parte 1 del writing

Respeta la estructura.

La palabra clave es organización . La estructura esperada es clara: debe haber una introducción, luego un desarrollo claro y lógico y finalmente una conclusión pertinente. Esta estructura debe sobresalir en tu escrito a través del uso de conectores apropiados.

Ten en cuenta a tu lector

¡Cuidado: no vayas a aburrirlo! Al contrario, anímalo a seguir leyéndo . ¿Cómo lograrlo? Ponte en los zapatos del estudiante que realizó la actividad. ¡Dale rienda suelta tu imaginación para determinar cómo pudo haber sido la experiencia y sé convincente!

Utiliza un vocabulario rico

No pierdas de vista que te están evaluando las competencias lingüísticas del nivel C1. Por lo tanto, debes demostrar tu capacidad para abordar temas complejos mediante un vocabulario rico y la utilización de estructuras elaboradas . Bienvenida la voz pasiva, los modales, los conectores variados, los “phrasal verbs”, las frases hechas e inclusive, los refranes.

Y por favor: olvídate de los básicos “but”, “so”, “and”, pues no se trata de un examen para validar el nivel A1.

Escribe un texto objetivo

Mantén la objetividad a la hora de argumentar. ¡Recuerda que se trata de un escrito formal y no de una acalorada discusión en un pub!

El Writing C1 Advanced (CAE) es el primer examen de Writing considerado como nivel avanzado, y se encuentra en el examen C1 Advanced de Cambridge, también conocido por su nombre antiguo CAE (Certificate in Advanced English).

Al igual que en otros exámenes (B2 First y C2 Proficiency), el Writing del C1 Advanced es solo una parte de las 5 que componen el C1 Advanced. Y como ya he dicho anteriormente, basándome en mi experiencia como profesor de inglés, el C1 Writing es una parte difícil, pero de las más fáciles de mejorar a base de estudiar.

Por este motivo, en este artículo te voy a explicar exactamente  cómo es el Writing del C1 Advanced (CAE) y te voy a mostrar un  ejemplo de cada Writing del CAE . ¡Allá vamos!

Writing C1 Advanced: Formal Email or Letter

Ejemplo de writing c1 formal email, writing c1: qué es el nivel c1.

Tal y como empezó a hacer Cambridge en el año 2015, el nombre del examen C1 Advanced especifica claramente el nivel del que se trata, es decir, un nivel C1 según el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas (CMCERL) . El nivel C1 es la primera franja de competencia lingüística que define un nivel avanzado. Tal y como especifica el MCE, una persona con un nivel C1 en competencia escrita:

Puede producir textos claros, bien estructurados y detallados sobre temas de cierta complejidad, mostrando un uso correcto de los mecanismos de organización, articulación y cohesión del texto. Marco Común Europeo, p. 26

A nivel general ya apreciamos un cambio con respecto a niveles inferiores, y es el uso de las palabras «temas de cierta complejidad», ya que en nivel B2 se especificaba únicamente «temas diversos» y «temas generales».

Si analizamos más la sección de expresión escrita del MCE , un candidato que tiene un nivel C1 escrito:

• Escribe textos claros y bien estructurados sobre temas complejos resaltando las ideas principales, ampliando con cierta extensión y defendiendo sus puntos de vista con ideas complementarias, motivos y ejemplos adecuados, y terminando con una conclusión apropiada.
• Escribe descripciones y textos imaginarios de forma clara, detallada y bien estructurada, con un estilo convincente, personal y natural, apropiado para los lectores a los que van dirigidos.
• Escribe exposiciones claras y bien estructuradas sobre temas complejos resaltando las ideas principales.
• Amplía con cierta extensión y defiende puntos de vista con ideas complementarias, motivos y ejemplos adecuados.

Como puedes apreciar, un  Writing de nivel C1  ya se trata de un nivel complejo, con unas expectativas del lector que también apuntan bastante alto.

Y ahora que conocemos cómo de avanzado es el nivel del Writing C1, vamos a ver cómo es el Writing del CAE , viendo ejemplos de ejercicios de Writing del C1 y de las instrucciones.

Cómo es el Writing C1 Advanced

El Writing del CAE sigue la línea de otros exámenes de Cambridge desde 2015, por eso, los candidatos tienen que escribir dos textos de 220 – 260 palabras en 1 hora y 30 minutos . Estos dos textos son de tipos diferentes, como veremos en la siguiente sección, y el objetivo es que demuestres una serie de mecanismos lingüísticos escritos de un Writing de nivel C1 .

Ahora pasaremos a ver los diferentes tipos de Writing del C1 Advanced (CAE) y ejemplos de cada una de ella.

Tipos de Writing C1

Estos son los diferentes tipos de tarea que puedes encontrarte en el CAE Writing actual:

• Email (informal or formal) or letter (informal or formal)

Estos tipos de Writing ya se vienen dando desde el B2 First, excepto el proposal , que es un tipo de tarea nueva de Writing que se introduce en el CAE (nivel C1), y que sustituye al article , que desaparece a este nivel.

Writing C1 Advanced: Part 1 – Essay

Al igual que en otros exámenes de main suite de Cambridge, la primera parte de este examen de Writing consiste en escribir un essay , es decir, un ensayo. A diferencia de la segunda parte, en esta únicamente tienes una opción, por lo que tienes que escribir un essay obligatoriamente.

Como ya sabrás, un ensayo ( essay ) es un tipo de Writing de C1 muy común a nivel académico, siendo este uno de los objetivos principales de este examen de inglés. Obviamente, en este caso no podemos escribir demasiadas palabras (alrededor de 260 como máximo), sino que se trata de demostrar que eres capaz de desenvolverte cómodamente al escribir sobre temas de ámbito académico. Además, para facilitar las cosas, esta tarea siempre presenta las instrucciones de la misma forma y con el mismo número de puntos.

A continuación tienes una captura para que veas cómo son las instrucciones de un essay en el CAE :

Como puedes leer en la imagen superior, la idea es que ha habido un seminario en el que tu clase ha participado y cuya temática es la efectividad del sistema educativo para ayudar a los jóvenes a encontrar trabajo. Se trata de un tema complejo y de nivel académico . A continuación tienes una serie de anotaciones : primero tienes los puntos que ha tratado el seminario y después una serie de citas sobre opiniones expresadas durante el seminario. Si te fijas bien, cada opinión corresponde a uno de los puntos tratados.

A continuación, debes escribir un essay de nivel C1 hablando sobre 2 de esos puntos y decidiendo cuál es el más apropiado. Y todo ello en 220 – 260 palabras. Haz click aquí para ver exactamente cómo escribir un Essay para el C1 Advanced (CAE) .

Pasemos ahora a la segunda parte.

Writing C1 Advanced: Part 2

En esta parte debes escribir otro writing de 220 – 260 palabras, pero a diferencia de la parte 1, en esta sí que puede elegir entre 3 tareas diferentes. Pero no te confundas, porque aunque únicamente haya 3 tareas, pueden aparecer hasta 7 tipos de Writing de C1 , como hemos viso antes: review , formal letter/email , informal letter/email , report o proposal .

Veamos un  ejemplo de cada tipo de Writing del C1 Advanced , esto es, del enunciado.

Writing C1 Advanced: Review

Uno de los tipos de tarea de Writing que pueden aparecer en el C1 Advanced es la review o reseña. Esta tarea suele ser bastante complicada, desde mi punto de vista, ya que se trata de un tipo de Writing muy concreto. Y el problema es que pueden pedirte que escribas una review sobre una película, un libro, una serie, un objeto, una página web, un programa de televisión, etc. En este caso vamos a ver un ejemplo de instrucciones de una review de una película .

Writing C1 Advanced: Report

El report es uno de los Writing de C1 más sencillos, en mi opinión. ¿Por qué? Porque desde mi punto de vista es de los que menos creatividad necesitan y, por lo general, esto lo suele hacer más fácil y nos da más lugar a centrarnos en nuestro inglés escrito.

Un report no es más que un informe, es decir, un escrito en el que analizamos algo que ya ha ocurrido o que ya existe. Por ejemplo, pueden pedirte que escribas un report sobre una visita, un programa de intercambio, una empresa, la situación de algo en tu país, etc.

En el caso que tenemos a continuación se trata de escribir un report sobre la influencia que tienen los programas de televisión en inglés sobre tu país. Lee la tarea con detenimiento:

Como ves, se trata de una tarea de Writing que requiere un tono muy formal, ya que va dirigido a una compañía internacional y se trata de un análisis a fondo de la situación. Más tarde veremos un  ejemplo de respuesta de report .

Writing C1 Advanced: Proposal

Ahora vamos a ver las instrucciones de un proposal para C1 Advanced, un tipo de Writing nuevo que se introduce específicamente en este nivel. El propósito de este tipo de Writing es hacer una propuesta para algún tema sobre el que nos preguntan. Un tema muy típico es ser estudiante o trabajador de una facultad que ha recibido una especie de beca económica, por lo que te piden que hagas una propuesta sobre cómo invertir dicho dinero.

Aunque nada tiene que ver ese tema con el que vamos a ver en las siguientes instrucciones de proposal :

El formato del texto, como veremos más adelante, es muy parecido al del report , pero mientras que un report se centra en algo ya pasado (para hacer propuestas de mejora), un proposal se centra en algo para el futuro.

Writing C1 Advanced: Informal Email or Letter

Un email y una carta, en cuanto a su formato, son lo mismo. Por eso los voy a tratar a ambos por igual en este apartado. Y, en este caso, voy a enseñarte un ejemplo de email informal para C1 Advanced , aunque también podría tratarse de un formal email or letter .

Aquí te dejo un típico ejemplo de tarea de email Writing C1 en la que te piden que le escribas a un amigo.

Y a continuación tienes un ejemplo de tarea para escribir un email formal para el C1 . Como puedes ver, se trata de una carta escrita al autor de un artículo de periódico, conque el tono debe ser formal, al igual que el vocabulario y la gramática utilizada.

Ya que hemos visto ejemplos de cada tipo de tarea, pasemos ahora a ver un  ejemplo de cada tipo de writing C1 , es decir, de respuestas apropiadas para las tareas de writing.

Ejemplos de Writing C1 Advanced (CAE)

En esta sección vamos a ver un  ejemplo de Writing C1  para cada tipo de tarea. El propósito de esto que te familiarices con cada tipo de Writing y que te hagas una idea de lo que se espera de ti en el examen. Además, he intentado simular un nivel C1, ni muy fuerte ni muy flojo, para que sepas a lo que deben parecerse tus tareas de Writing, como mínimo. Empecemos.

Ejemplo de Writing C1 Essay

Un essay, como hemos visto antes, es un Writing formal en el que debes hablar de 2 ideas (de 3 que aparecen en las instrucciones) y entre las que debes elegir una de ellas como la mejor opción , siempre justificando tus opiniones. Para expresar tus ideas, debes demostrar un nivel C1 a través del vocabulario, las estructuras gramaticales, lenguaje apropiado al contexto, fórmulas, etc.

A continuación tienes una respuesta a la tarea planteada anteriormente:

Helping students find suitable jobs Nowadays, there seems to be a serious problem with our education system. A growing number of youngsters are finding themselves stuck in jobs that have little or nothing to do with their degrees. As a consequence, frustration and unemployment are on the rise, as young workers eventually tend to resign. But is there something to be done about this? Experts believe so.  On the one hand, it is believed that when choosing a degree, students are not mature enough. Therefore, they lack the necessary experience to know what they really desire for their future. If they were to have more experience, they would choose more wisely. In turn, there would be fewer college dropouts and more fulfilled young workers. For this reason, experts claim that embarking on a work experience programme would be truly beneficial.  On the other hand, recent research points out that students lack appropriate careers guidance. Not only are teachers not qualified for this task, but also they lack the resources to provide students with guidance. Thus it is of utmost importance to hire professional careers counsellors, who can help students develop more accurate expectations of their careers and professional opportunities. In conclusion, I hold the view that if we were to tackle these two issues, our education system would become more effective in aiding students to become satisfied workers after finishing their university studies. However, implementing work experience programmes would bring about greater benefits for youngsters than seeking profesional counselling. This is so because I believe that our own experience is more valuable than someone else’s professional opinion. 

Este ejemplo, que he escrito yo mismo, es un buen ejemplo de essay para el C1 Advanced (CAE). En este caso, trato 2 de los puntos que me han dado (párrafos 2 y 3) y hago una buena introducción (párrafo 1) y una buena conclusión (párrafo 4). Fíjate además cómo van separados los párrafos y el tipo de conectores, vocabulario y gramática que uso.

Ejemplo de Writing C1 Review

El siguiente ejemplo es de una review de una película que escribí para mis alumnos de C1. Como puedes ver, se trata de una película real ( Room ) y en ella hablo de varias cosas esenciales en cualquier review de película, libro o serie: argumento , personajes/actores , recomendación , temática , por qué me gusta , etc.

Room There are films which represent a turning point in the life of every film buff, whether it be for the plot, the actors or the themes. In my case, this came about when I watched Room, a heartbreaking yet inspiring production directed by Lenny Abrahamson. Set in present-day Canada, the plot of this human drama revolves around the story of a young woman, Ma, who was kidnapped 7 years ago and has been locked up ever since in a minute back-garden shed – referred to as “room” throughout the whole film. After regular forced, sexual encounters with her kidnapper, Ma has given birth to Jack, who is now 6 years old. During this time, room is the only world he knows, thus being completely unaware of what lies beyond those four walls. However, Ma will do everything in her power to break free and put an end to their ordeal.  The characters are wonderfully played by all the actors, who put in an exceptional performance, especially the young, child actor who plays Jack. He really provides the part with a lot of personality and wins the viewers’ sympathy from the outset.  What made me fall in love with this film was that it deals in an extremely realistic way with major themes like violence, motherly love and depression. However, the icing on the cake is how this picture gives us hope to overcome severe difficulties.  If you’re keen movie lover and enjoy thought-provoking stories, I wouldn’t hesitate to log on to Netflix and watch it straightaway. You will always remember it as one of the best films you ever saw. 

Si te has fijado bien, verás que este tipo de Writings es muy demanding (exigente) en cuanto a vocabulario se refiere, ya que son muy descriptivos y hay que hacer mucho uso de adjetivos potentes ( heartbreaking, thought-provoking, exceptional, etc.). Además, el vocabulario ha de ser muy específico, especialmente tratándose de un nivel C1.

Ejemplo de Writing C1 Report

En esta sección tienes un  ejemplo de report para el CAE. Al igual que antes, se trata de la respuesta a la tarea de Writing presentada en la sección anterior sobre el impacto de la televisión de habla inglesa sobre mi país.

Como habrás apreciado inmediatamente a simple vista,  la estructura de un report es muy especial . Y es que, aparte del título,  cada párrafo o idea es en realidad un subapartado  introducido por un subtítulo. Además, el registro debe ser bastante formal, como podrás leer a continuación:

English-language TV Programmes in Spain Introduction The aim of this report is to analyse the introduction of English-language TV programmes to Spanish television. In doing so, this document will focus on the popularity of such programmes, the effect they have on local culture and how they could be improved by making some minor changes.  Popularity  According to the latest research, English-language TV programmes have increased in popularity in Spain during the last decade as a result of new television features like TV on demand. The main issue seems to be that most viewers are watching a dubbed version of these shows. However, as English language fluency increases within the country, more and more viewers tend to choose the original version of these shows with the intention of boosting their fluency even more.  Effects on local culture While the impact on Spanish culture is not as great as on other cultures, due to relatively scarce differences between American or English societies, some changes have been registered. Firstly, national TV productions are struggling to compete with American programmes, which have a more generous budget. Secondly, according to sociologists, language learners are benefiting not only from language input, but also from a broader cultural awareness.  Recommendations In order for English-language shows to have a more positive impact on our society, I would recommend not dubbing them. Consequently, viewers would be somewhat obliged to watch these programmes in English, hence improving their English language skills. Furthermore, as a teacher, I would suggest Spanish TV channels provide viewers with online educational resources and support so that they would be able to make the most of watching shows in the original version. 

Ejemplo de Writing C1 Proposal

La estructura de un proposal , como puedes observar, es (o puede ser) exactamente igual que la de un report . No es obligatorio que sea así, pero sí recomendable.

En el ejercicio de proposal de Writing de C1 que vimos anteriormente, me pedían que propusiera a una persona para homenajear en mi ciudad, que es Granada. Así que aquí tienes el ejemplo de proposal con mi nominación a un supuesto José Pérez :

Granada’s Most Committed Teacher Introduction The aim of this proposal is to suggest honouring a local figure who I believe is worthy of the city’s respect and admiration. The person I have chosen is José Pérez, a renowned educator, who sadly passed away last year, at the age of 73.  Achievements Born and raised in Granada, Mr Pérez is famous in this city for his work as educator. In his early years, he started working in a secondary school in an extremely run-down area, thus dealing with extremely troublesome students and families. However, instead of giving in to difficulties, he managed to increase dramatically the number of high school graduates. Furthermore, seeing how uneducated families in this area were, he set out to found a local charity which teaches youngsters and adults alike. These are the main reasons why I believe Mr Pérez should be honoured by the local council.  Tribute The best way in which Mr Pérez should be honoured is by renaming the school where he used to work after him. I believe he would have been deeply grateful for this. However, I would also like to propose paying him homage by holding a local holiday on 10th March, coinciding with his birthday. On this day, schools would be expected organise especial events in his memory.  Conclusion On the whole, I believe that I am not alone when I say that Mr Pérez’s work has had an impact on the city which no other person has achieved in the last 100 years. For this reason, I truly hope you consider this proposal, as it would make many people happy. 

Ejemplo de Writing C1 Informal Email

Aquí te dejo una carta o un email informal respondiendo a “mi amigo australiano” Mike. Lo esencial, como verás ahora, de cualquier email o carta, aparte de que esté bien escrito y en un registro adecuado, es la estructura. Fíjate cómo divido este email en:

• párrafo de apertura
• párrafos con ideas principales
• párrafo de cierre

En este caso, al tratarse de un ejemplo de email informal de C1 , el lenguaje es muuuuuuy informal. De hecho, lo he exagerado bastante to make a point y que se vea que domino el registro informal. Quizás te recomendaría que, si escribes un email informal, no te pases tanto como lo he hecho yo, jeje.

Hi Mike!  How’s it going, bro? Things are just swell over here: the weather’s great and I’ll be off work soon for a couple of weeks. So it’s absolutely fantastic that you’re doing that course you told me about here in Granada. So here’s a few things to keep you busy in your spare time, which, BTW, you’ve got tons of, haven’t you?  If the weather’s not that great when you’re here – though I doubt it! –, you might wanna make the most of the cafés and tea rooms in Granada. Tea rooms are a great part of social life here and you can find a bunch of them around Elvira Street. They all serve super tasty Muslim-style tea and some even have stand-up performances on weekends. A continuación te dejo un ejemplo de email formal para el CAE. Es la respuesta a la tarea planteada en el punto anterior, acerca del artículo de periódico con el cual no estoy de acuerdo. Fíjate en el registro utilizado y verás qué formal suena y cuánto más impone un tono formal que un tono informal.

Dear Sir,  My name is Luis, I am a child psychologist and I am writing with regards to your latest article about the effect of new technologies on our children, which was recently published in our local newspaper. I am afraid that, although I understand why you may hold such views, I disagree with most of the points you put forward.  To begin with, you categorically claim that children’s lives are worse now than they used to be in the past. However, not a single scientific paper published in the last 10 years regarding our infants’ well-being supports this claim, which clearly suggests that it is biased and unfounded. I am a child psychologist, currently conducting relevant research in this field, so I am well-informed and know what I am talking about.  Furthermore, in your article you place all the blame on new technologies and the internet, as if these were directly responsible for children’s lack of a healthy lifestyle. No reference do you make, whatsoever, to parents’ responsibility in the matter, which, from my point of view, makes all the difference. The use our children make of the internet is entirely dependent upon how and for how long their parents allow them to use it. It can be a fantastic tool if used responsibly, or a terribly dangerous one if used carelessly.  As an expert in the matter, I would be more than willing to contribute with my expertise to further articles dealing with children’s psychology and well-being, which you or the newspaper may wish to publish in the future.  Yours faithfully,  Luis

Writing C1 Advanced (CAE): cómo se evalúa

Cualquier tarea de Writing del CAE se evalúa en torno a 4 criterios de evaluación fundamentales, al igual que el B2. Estos son: Content , Communicative Achievement , Organisation y Language . Veamos ahora en qué consiste cada uno para que te hagas una idea de cómo leer tu Writing una vez finalizado:

• Content : Este criterio tiene como objeto evaluar cómo de bien has sabido completar la tarea y responder a todo lo que se pedía . En este sentido es importante que  respondas a cada punto propuesto  en el ejercicio (en este caso te piden 2) y que la información que escribas cubra bien cada punto y la tarea en general, de manera que el lector quede bien informado con respecto al objetivo del enunciado.
• Communicative Achievement : Este apartado de evaluación tiene como objeto determinar  cómo de apropiado es tu Writing  con respecto al ejercicio propuesto. En este sentido, es especialmente importante el  estilo  y el  registro  con el que hayas escrito. Es decir, si a tu amigo australiano Mike le escribes empezando con Dear Sir , perderás puntos. Al igual que si utilizas muchas contracciones en un application letter , cuyo registro se supone formal.
• Organisation : ¿Tu writing tiene una progresión  lógica  y está correctamente  estructurado ? Perfecto. Entonces probablemente obtengas buena nota en este criterio. Por lo general, cualquier Writing de C1 debe estar separado en  párrafos coherentemente interconectados , con oraciones coherentes y bien cohesionadas, ofreciendo una  progresión lógica  y fácil de seguir. Para ello, has de hacer uso de una serie de  conectores avanzados  y estructuras gramaticales cohesivas propias de un nivel C1, es decir, expresiones avanzadas que no suelen aparecer en niveles inferiores.
• Language : En esta sección, obviamente, debes intentar que tu  gramática y vocabulario  se encuentren en un nivel C1 (que no es fácil) y de no cometer errores lingüísticos. A este nivel tan avanzado, se supone que no debes cometer fallos. No vas a suspender si los cometes, pero dependiendo de cómo de chungo sea el error, podrás perder más o menos puntos.

Consejos para el Writing C1 Advanced (CAE)

Como cada parte del C1 Advanced, para el Writing del Advanced existen muchas estrategias importantes que te ayudarán a cumplir los requisitos que los correctores están buscando. Por lo general, yo siempre recomiendo hacer lo siguiente:

• Planea lo que vas a escribir antes de escribir . Jamás , repito, jamás comiences a escribir sin saber de lo que vas a hablar. Ni siquiera aunque lo hayas pensado. Hacer anotaciones sobre cómo vas a organizar tu Writing es fundamental para hacer que sea coherente y que al lector le resulte fácil de seguir. Además, evitarás pasarte con el número de palabras y que un párrafo sea mucho más largo que otro y tengas un Writing descompensado. Lo ideal es siempre hacer un esquema con las ideas principales, y comenzar a partir de ahí.
• El lector es más importante que tu abuela . A ver, tu abuela es muy importante, pero no creo que ella vaya a corregirte el examen. Así que piensa, ¿quién va a leer mi Writing? . Por ejemplo, si vas a escribir una review para una revista online, el tono que deberás utilizar será estándar o informal, pero si se trata una carta para solicitar un puesto de trabajo, tendrás que resultar más serio y formal. Por ello, siempre fíjate en quién será tu lector y adátate a él/ella/ellos/ellas.
• Escribe un borrador y no dejes de mejorarlo . Escribir todo genial de primeras es muy difícil. Eso solo está al alcande de unos pocos como yo (Ha! ha!). Por este motivo, tu proceso de escritura siempre debe incluir un primer borrador, que luego reescribirás doscientas mil veces ( Dar sera, pulir sera , como diría Miyagi). De este modo, mejorarás distintos aspectos de tu Writing como el vocabulario y la gramática, los conectores, etc. Además, evitarás fallos y errores absurdos y verás si es coherente o no, y un largo etcétera de cosas útiles. Esto es fundamental, te lo digo en serio.
• Define bien los párrafos de cada Writing . Sé que te puede parecer una tontería, pero definir los párrafos de un Writing hace que el texto, aparte de organizado, sea visualmente atractivo. Esto puede jugar a tu favor para causar una buena impresión en el lector (corrector).
• Escribe con conocimiento de causa . A ver, estás en un examen de inglés en el que tienes que demostrar lo que sabes. Es decir, cuando escribas intenta lucirte utilizando ciertas estructuras a propósito. Has estudiado las condicionales, ¿verdad? Pues mete una condicional. ¿Y los comparativos? También, pues mete una oración comparativa. ¿Te acuerdas de ese tema del medioambiente que viste con tu profe de inglés? Genial, pues mete palabras como greenhouse effect, acid rain, etc. ¡Intenta lucirte, copón, que pa eso estamos aquí! xD
• Revisa antes de darlo por terminado . Obviamente, nunca entregues un ejercicio de Writing sin revisar. Tienes que hacer de self-proofreader, buscando posibles erratas, errores ortográficos, faltas de concordancia, etc. Revisando evitarás errores muy tontos y comunes que podrían afectar muy negativamente a tu nota. Recuerda, dar sera, pulir sera .

Me examino el 11 de Julio de C1 Tenía una duda: en el essay o en el report ¿hay que dar tu opinión? es que para el B2 me dijeron que solo en el último párrafo y cosas así, y no sé si es igual en este. Y una cosita más: un essay y un report a la hora de escribirlo ¿pueden tener formas parecidas?, es decir, ¿puedo poner «secondly», «another point to consider», «as a conclusion» en ambos? ¿Tienen mucha diferencia entre ellos?. Y mi profesora me dijo que si te pasabas de las 260 palabras (si eran 30 más o así) no pasaba nada, ¿me lo confirmas?

Hola Ana. Muchas gracias por tu comentario. 🙂 Realmente, la forma de hacer los Essays y Reports en B2 o C1 no cambia. En un Essay siempre tienes que dar tu opinión. Yo siempre recomiendo 2 opciones: 1) Dar tu opinión al principio (primer párrafo) y utilizar los siguientes párrafos para justificarla, con conclusión en el último; o 2) Plantear la «incógnita» en el primer párrafo, valorar las consideraciones en los siguientes párrafos y finalmente dar tu opinión. Realmente, mientras esté bien escrito, con sentido, no hay problema. Pero SIEMPRE tienes que dar tu opinión en un Essay porque es lo que te preguntan. 🙂

En cuanto al Report, obviamente, como ves en este post, la estructura es muy diferente. Los conectores pueden ser los mismos, si es lo que te preocupa, pero la estructura de un Report es recomendable que tenga un título y un subtítulo por cada párrafo/apartado. Y tu opinión, no sé si siempre tendrás que darla, porque básicamente depende de lo que te pidan, pero por lo general te indican que des recomendaciones o hagas alguna propuesta de mejora, entonces… en cierto modo, eso es dar tu opinión, jeje.

Con respecto al número de palabras, tu profesora tiene razón. El número de palabras es orientativo, no algo que vayan a coger y penalizarte si te pasas o no llegas. Simplemente se trata de un rango entre el cual deberías ser capaz de hacer un writing completo, respondiendo a todas las ideas correctamente. Si no llegas, por mucho, probablemente no hayas hablado de todo o lo hayas hecho muy por encima. Si te pasas por muchas palabras, probablemente estés metiendo paja (información irrelevante) y yéndote por las ramas. Y ambas cosas (pasarse o quedarse corto al cubrir la temática) son penalizables. Pero no basándose en el número de palabras en sí.

Qué gusto leer tu guía y qué fácil haces que parezca, yo este año entré directamente al C1.2 por un test de nivel que consideraron mis profes que debía hacer a pesar de mi opinión, y para mi sorpresa he aprobado los exámenes del C1… ahora tendremos el día 2 y 4 los exámenes de la certificación de la EOI, así que me siento bastante perdida por falta de práctica gramatical y requisitos que se piden para cada caso. Me ayuda muchísimo tu capacidad de sintetizar, y lo claro que lo expones, ahora toca «hit the books» y poner manos a la obra lo aprendido allí, pero no es lo mismo trabajar en casa con tiempo, tranquilidad, sin presión ni nervios que allí dándolo todo y si se te apareció la Virgen bien y si no…pues otra vez será!!jeje Quería también decirte, que no solo se trata de aprender inglés, es que si no sabemos construir la idea que queremos expresar no hay idioma que valga, y leyendo lo que escribes pienso, yo no me expreso así ni en español!!! Quería preguntarte por el tema de los consejos de cara al examen, concretamente de los puntos de «planear lo que vamos a escribir» y el «borrador». Hola, Lidia. Lo que te aconsejo en este caso, si te manejas con ordenadores, es que hagas la versión computer-based. A mí, por ejemplo, me resulta mucho más fácil teclear que escribir a mano. Además, cuando lo haces a ordenador, irás viendo el contador de palabras y no tienes que reescribirlo todo, sino ir haciendo cambios sobre el texto, que es mucho mejor que hacer en sucio y luego pasar a limpio. En cuanto a unas dudas que tengo:

En la segunda parte del writing, siempre te dan a elegir entre todos, ¿cierto? Quiero decir, siempre aparece la opción de una proposal, una review, etc.

Cuando hago un proposal incluyo sus headlines y párrafos pero tengo una duda con la estructura. Hace poco hice uno en el que hice lo siguiente:

Titulo -Intro Párrafo -Headline 1 Párrafo -Headline 2 -Párrafo -Headline 3 -Párrafo -Conclusion -Párrafo

Normalmente, he visto que solo incluyen dos main paragraphs y no sé si esta estrctura estaría bien, puesto que vi necesario incluir un tercero para dar respuesta a todo lo que se me pedía en la proposal, que eran bastante cosas.

Te voy respondiendo: – En la segunda parte del Writing SIEMPRE puedes elegir entre varias opciones, pero no son todos los tipos de Writing que hay. Me explico: te dan 3 opciones, pero hay más de 3 tipos de Writing (review, formal letter/email, informal letter/email, report o proposal). Es decir, hay hasta 6 tipos de Writing si contamos modalidad informal y formal y cartas o emails por separado (aunque son básicamente lo mismo).

– La estructura que me comentas del proposal está perfecta. Si crees que es necesario un subapartado más y te cuadra en el número de palabras y la profundidad de la información… ¿por qué no incluirlo? A mí me parece una genial idea si está bien ejecutado. 🙂

La parte de writing del examen de inglés C1 Advanced de la Universidad de Cambridge consta de dos ejercicios. Es decir, tenemos que hacer dos writings .

Y el primero siempre es un discursive essay , por lo cual tenemos que aprender a hacerlo de maravilla porque sí o sí va a entrar en el examen.

En el essay del C1 Advanced, nos plantean un tema con una pregunta y nos preguntan si estamos de acuerdo o no . Nos dan dos ideas sobre el tema y, además, nos piden que añadamos una idea propia.

Nuestra tarea es desarrollar las tres ideas y dar nuestra opinión sobre el tema, basándonos en razones que apoyen nuestra opinión. Hay que escribir todo esto usando entre 220 y 260 palabras.

Vamos a ver un ejemplo real de essay del C1 Advanced.

In your English class you have been discussing cooking and how it affects people’s lives. Now, your teacher has asked your to write an essay.

It’s important for young people to learn how to cook. Do you agree?

Los temas que suelen entrar en el essay del C1 Advanced son 🌳 environment, 🍎 healthy lifestyle, 🛍️ shopping & consumerism, 🔨 work & education, ✈️ traveling, 💻 new technologies, ⚖️ social issues… por lo cual tenemos que preparar el vocabulario específico sobre estos temas.

Las bases oficiales de Cambridge sobre el essay del C1 Advanced nos dicen que se evalúa conforme a cuatro criterios:

Una vez tenemos claro qué nos piden hacer y cómo nos lo van a evaluar, vamos a ver cómo hacer el essay del C1 Advanced de Cambridge paso a paso.

el estilo debe ser formal

El essay es uno de los writings formales que entran en el examen C1 Advanced de Cambridge, ya que estamos defendiendo un punto de vista sobre un tema importante. Para que nuestro inglés sea formal debemos tener en cuenta los siguientes aspectos.

notas para planificarlo

Lo primero siempre es escribir unas notas que nos ayuden a planificar cómo vamos a desarrollar las tres ideas que tenemos que escribir.

Es necesario que hagamos este planning antes de empezar a escribir para que nuestro essay tenga una buena organización y cumplamos con este criterio de evaluación.

Lo que vamos a hacer en nuestras notas es desarrollar un poco las tres ideas, explicando siempre el porqué de cada una. Podemos usar un simple because para ayudarnos, que ya cambiaremos luego en el writing por otros conectores de más nivel.

Si alguno de los because da como resultado un problema, puedes también ofrecer una solución, que los examinadores valoran mucho. Además, también podemos dar ejemplos que apoyen nuestras razones si es necesario porque no está suficientemente claro.

estructura en 4 párrafos

El essay del C1 Advanced de Cambridge lo vamos a escribir en 4 párrafos claramente definidos y separados. Siempre es buena idea ponerle también un título .

unidos por conectores

Tenemos que separar cada idea en un párrafo, pero deben estar hiladas de forma coherente , para lo cual vamos a usar diferentes conectores que nos ayuden a aportar orden y claridad.

En esta lección tienes montones de conectores que puedes usar en tu writing para dar ejemplos (for example, such as…) , para añadir ideas (in addition, besides…) , para oponer ideas (on the other hand, in spite of…) , para expresar resultado (for this reason, as a result…) o para dar tu opinión (from my point of view, as far as I am concerned…).

Como el essay es un writing formal, tenemos que usar conectores formales. Apréndete unos cuantos y úsalos en todos tus writings mientras practicas para el examen.

Además, vamos a ver diferentes maneras de abrir los cinco párrafos , que puedes memorizar y usar para escribir las diferentes partes del essay del C1 Advanced.

introducción

Nowadays, most people bear in mind that…

In this day and age, people tend to believe that…

Needless to say, …

Firstly, it is undeniable that…

As far as ______ is concerned, …

Likewise, _________ is equally important since…

As a matter of fact, …

repaso final

Una vez hayamos terminado, tenemos que repasar nuestro writing , asegurándonos que hemos desarrollado las tres ideas que nos piden, y no hemos divagado escribiendo cosas innecesarias.

Es el momento de buscar posibles errores gramaticales o de spelling , y de asegurarnos de que no hemos repetido ideas, frases o palabras. Si nos ha pasado, hay que reescribirlas buscando sinónimos y haciendo rephrasing .

Os dejo una plantilla para el essay del C1 Advanced que puedes usar para tu propio essay.

Usar una plantilla no es lo más recomendable porque es fácil equivocarse, pero si no tienes tiempo de prepararte bien, no cuentas con la ayuda de un teacher o simplemente quieres coger un atajo, te puede ayudar mucho.

Verás que, para la plantilla del essay , hay huecos para idea 1, idea 2… recuerda que tienes que decirlo cada vez de forma un poco diferente, usando sinónimos o frases parecidas .

Además, no te limites a usar esta plantilla palabra por palabra, añade frases tuyas propias que desarrollen tus ideas, y aporta razones y ejemplos. Ten en cuenta, que dependiendo de qué escribas, tendrás que modificarla ligeramente para que tenga sentido.

Obviamente, tendrás que adaptar esta plantilla tu essay del C1 Advanced. Quizá en tu essay , sea la idea 1 la que te sugiere un problema y una solución o, por ejemplo, también puedes poner una sola opinión en la conclusión.

Consejos y trucos para superar la parte de Writing del examen CAE

1. Conoce el formato del examen: Nuestro primer consejo para prepararte para el Writing del CAE es conocer la estructura del examen y que te familiarices muy bien con él. ¡Puedes consultarlo aquí!

2. Aprende a estructurar tus ensayos y artículos: En el Writing del CAE te pedirán que escribas en diferentes formatos, como carta, email, ensayo… Es importante que practiques cada uno de estos ejemplos y que te acostumbres a estructurar tus frases. Aparte de escribir, te recomendamos leer artículos y ensayos en inglés. 3. Utiliza conectores: Usa conectores adecuados para relacionar las ideas en tu texto para que esté bien estructurado y tenga una buena cohesión. Aquí tienes un  artículo en el que te damos una lista de los conectores C1 que puedes utilizar para el writing del CAE.

4. Utiliza un lenguaje formal: En el examen del CAE es importante que utilices un lenguaje formal. Evita el uso de jergas o expresiones informales.

5. Practica la gestión del tiempo: Cada parte del CAE, incluyendo el Writing, tiene una duración limitada. Nuestro consejo es que practiques el Writing en casa con un cronómetro, te resultará de mucha ayuda y te ahorrarás nervios el día del examen.

C1 Advanced: Writing Part 1 Formal Essay

This is yet another designed to help students prepare for part one of the C1 Cambridge Advanced (CAE) writing exam. Some of the content has been rehashed from old posts but the approach is slightly different. Download the student handout below:

Give out the handout and draw students’ attention to the task on page one and the first version at the bottom of the page. Have them read the task, then the model answer, then answer questions 1-3 with their partner:

• Which of the three areas (convenience, cost & enjoyment) does the writer focus on? cost and convenience
• Which one do they decide has the biggest impact on where people choose to shop? cost
• Content (have they answered the question?) 4.5 – 5 – yes, question is fully answered
• Range of language 2.5 – reads more like a B2 First essay
• Appropriate style (formal/informal) 1.5 – too informal, not the right style: contractions, words like “stuff”, too personal (too much “I” and “we”), “first let’s look at”

Now have students look at question 4. If you’re pressed for time, you could skip this part. Have students brainstorm more formal and advanced ways of expressing the parts in bold in pairs or groups. Perhaps you could assign one paragraph to each group and have them report back in open class. Board their ideas.

Now have students flip the paper over. Version 2 essential expresses the same ideas but with more advanced language and a more appropriate register. Direct students to find the “fancy” equivalents of the underlined phrases from version 1 in version 2.

Set students the homework task by first encouraging them to discuss the topic:

Factors when deciding where to go on holiday:

• Cultural activities

Encourage them to use the language from version 2 and the language on pages 2 and 3 in their compositions.

Read version 1 and answer the questions:

• Which of the three areas (convenience, cost & enjoyment) does the writer focus on?
• Which one do they decide has the biggest impact on where people choose to shop?
• Content (have they answered the question?)
• Range of language
• Appropriate style (formal/informal)
• Look at the sections in bold, how could you express the same ideas in a more impressive/formal way?

We’re always hearing in the news about how more and more people are buying things on the internet . It’s a big problem that fewer people are going shopping in physical shops nowadays . But, what makes people decide where to shop?

First, let’s look at convenience. It’s true that shopping online is much easier than shopping in physical shops. You can buy stuff on your computer and you can sit on your sofa , you don’t need to leave your house . Also , the stuff gets sent to your house . When you go to the physical shop you have to take it home yourself.

Now I’ll talk about cost. Some people think that cost is the most important thing people think about when they decide where to shop. For example, when the sales are on people buy things in shops they don’t normally go to. But some people don’t care about the price. It doesn’t matter if it’s expensive or not.

In conclusion, looking at the facts, I think that cost is the most important thing for most people because if you don’t have enough money , you can’t buy it.

Find and underline the ways that the same ideas are expressed in this version.

Hardly a week goes by without another news report about the recent dramatic increase in online shopping. The decline of the high street shop is undoubtedly a major issue in this day and age. However, which aspect of shopping has the biggest influence on where people shop?

The first area to take into account is convenience. It is undoubtedly the case that shopping online is much more convenient than shopping on the high street. Not only can you make a purchase with the click of a button, but also you can do it from the comfort of your sofa without setting foot outside your door.  In addition, the goods are delivered directly to your door whereas when you shop in physical shops you have to carry it home yourself.

Another aspect to consider is cost. There are those who argue that cost has the biggest impact on where people decide to shop. This is illustrated by the fact that during the sales many people buy things in shops they would not normally enter. Nevertheless, for some people the cost is not an issue, they buy what they want to buy no matter the price.

In light of the above, weighing up all the evidence, it is probably true to say that cost does indeed have the biggest influence on where people decide to shop due to the fact that most of the time, if you cannot afford something then you will not be able to buy it.

Homework Task

Your class has had a class debate on the most important factors when it comes to deciding on a holiday destination.

Some opinions expressed in the debate:

• “If it’s not a sunny place, then I’m not going. Why would I visit a cold, rainy city?”
• “I want my money to go further. For the price of a weekend in Paris, I could spend 2 weeks in Morocco.”
• “I can’t stand just lying on a beach, I need to get out and learn something about the places I’m visiting.”

Write an essay for your tutor, discussing two of the factors in your notes. You should explain which factor is the most important for most people , giving reasons to support your argument.

You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the debate but you should use your own words as far as possible. Write your essay in 220-260 words in an appropriate style.

Modelo de essay para preparar examen CAE de Cambridge, nivel c1

Como sabéis, en la Web del Inglés nos gusta ir completando nuestra base de datos de writings, que nosotros mismos corregimos para nuestros alumnos y seguidores, y que sirven para ayudarte a ti, y a todos los estudiantes de inglés, a preparar los exámenes oficiales de inglés, ya sea los de Cambridge, los del la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, de Trinity (ISE), Aptis, universidades, o cualquier otro examen. Hoy os tengo preparado un essay para preparar concretamente el CAE de Cambridge, que como sabéis es un nivel c1. Es un modelo de essay cuyo título dice así: marrying someone from a different country will always be more problematic than marrying someone from your own country.

Este modelo de essay lo ha realizado una alumna mía, Lorena, y tengo que decir que le ha salido realmente bien y ¿por qué? Pues en primer lugar porque es muy trabajadora, y en segundo lugar, porque ha seguido las pautas que doy en la web sobre cómo escribir un buen essay para los exámenes oficiales, b2, c1 y c2 . Con esta completa explicación, con todas las pautas ahí dichas, con esfuerzo y ganas de mejorar y superarse, a Lorena le ha saludo un essay de categoría, que hoy vamos a compartir contigo. Vamos allá 😉

As far as matrimony is concerned , it turns out to be clear that it this has changed significantly with the passage of time. Nowadays marrying someone from another country is nearly as frequent as marriage between people from the same country. Nevertheless, marrying someone from a different country is still drastically more difficult.

Culture seems to be one of these difficulties, people from different countries might have different ideas of marrying, and some experts claim that it is one of the most popular problem s for couples. On the grounds of that, the vast majority of people agree that couples should do celebrate the ceremony based on both cultures.

It is a common belief that love conquers all, love should be easy, and people from different ethnic groups ought to be able to marry without any difficulties. However, they have many legal obstacles.

According to what people , who have married with someone from another country , say s , burocracy is the most important obstruction for to their matrimonies. To illustrate this issue, it is known that you are obligated to present many papers documents so that the marriage will be accepted and even so you will be watched until the matrimony will be ratified due to all the benefits the couple receive.

With all above in mind , we can consider that marrying someone from a different country is more and more difficult nowadays these days , . I tend to believe that it is an issue which will be solved in some years. People tend more and more to marry people from different countries, so to my mind governments should facilitate these marriages.

ASPECTOS POSITIVOS:

• Se ha utilizado de forma muy adecuada el lenguaje de distanciamiento que os comentaba en la explicación anterior sobre los essays, como podéis observar en las notas azules: it turns out to be clear, seems to be, some experts claim that, it is a common belief that, according to, might, etc.
• Buenos linkers: as far as matrimony is concerned, nevertheless, on the grounds of that, due to, so that + subject + will + verb, even so, with all above in mind, etc.
• Adverbs para mostrar énfasis: significantly, drastically.
• More and more + adjetive = double comparative.
• Passive: will be solved, will be accepted.
• Passive of reporting verbs: it is known that.
• Comparison with nearly + as + adjective + as.
• To illustrate this issue.

ASPECTOS A MEJORAR:

• En el modelo de essay para exámenes se debe evitar la repetición de vocabulario y expresiones. Tenemos repetido: issue, tend to, more and more y nowadays. Alternativas que propongo para estos conceptos son: issue = matter = question / I tend to = I believe = I reckon = Personally, etc. / noaways = these days = todays / currently. Y para more and more tendríamos que formular la oración de otra manera y no utilizar la doble comparison otra vez.
• To my mind = es sinónimo de in my opinion, pero debe ir con el posesivo my.
• Utilizamos «this» en lugar de «it» cuando me refiero a algo dicho anteriormente, en este caso nos estamos refiriendo a «matrimony».
• People es plural, ojo con esto de cara al c1, el verbo no puede llevar -s de tercera persona del singular.
• Marry no lleva preposición with, como en español, que decimos «casarse con». Si te das cuenta, en las instrucciones del ejercicio, no está with, por tanto, cuando utilizamos algo del título que nos dan, hay que tener mucho cuidado y no hacer el error.
• Obstraction + to.
• Paper en inglés es una palabra uncountable, lo cual quiere decir que no se puede poner en plural. Propongo para este caso mejor «documents».

Cómo escribir la review del Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): guía con ejemplo paso a paso

Seguramente ya sabes que tu examen tiene dos partes. La primera, el essay. La segunda, una tarea que debes elegir entre article , email o letter, report (informe) y una review (reseña). En esta entrada vamos a escribir juntos un ejemplo de review para el CAE (Cambridge C1 Advanced) paso a paso.

Esta entrada también te interesa si vas a escribir la  review del examen C1 de EOI o del Trinity ISE III: en ambos puede caer este tip o de escrito.

¿Qué tema elijo para mi  review ? ¿Qué debe tener? ¿Debo escribirla en tono formal o informal?

Don’t panic.  Vamos a desgranar este asunto por partes.

Paso 1: lee el enunciado y elige un título

En primer lugar, para escribir tu review es leer detenidamente el enunciado. Veamos este de Ready for Advanced de Macmillan:

Obviamente, lo primero que debemos hacer es decidir la serie sobre la que escribiremos nuestro ejemplo de review CAE. El nombre de la serie será el título de la reseña. 

Vamos a elegir Years and Years , una serie que… bueno, ya lo verás en el ejemplo.

Paso 2: responde a las preguntas del enunciado

En segundo lugar, debes responder una pregunta que no está específicamente en el enunciado,  pero definirá la idea principal o thesis statement de tu reseña y te ayudará a estructurar tu review :  

Ojo: no entres en detalles. Estos vienen en las preguntas enunciadas en el enunciado:

• ¿Qué te gusta de la serie?
• ¿Qué no te gusta de la serie?
• ¿A quién se la recomendarías?

Definidas las preguntas, las respondo y justifico mínimamente:

En este segundo paso, quiero que te fijes en tres cosas:

Primero, en cómo prácticamente tenemos hecho el outline o plan de nuestro ejemplo de review CAE al haber respondido estas preguntas.

Segundo, en que las respuestas a las preguntas siguen una secuencia lógica : 

Opinión favorable => qué me gusta de la serie (justificación de la opinión favorable) => qué no me gusta => a quién la recomiendo.

No obstante, si tu opinión sobre la serie no es favorable, es mejor cambiar la secuencia:  

Opinión des favorable => qué no me gusta de la serie (justificación de la opinión desfavorable) => qué me gusta => a quién la recomiendo.

Por último, fíjate cómo he justificado mis opiniones con breves menciones al argumento de la serie. No escribas un resumen de la trama.

Paso 3: planifica la introducción y la conclusión

No podemos empezar nuestro ejemplo de review CAE dando nuestra opinión sin venir a cuento. Al igual que en una conversación normal, hay que introducirla como quien no quiere la cosa:

Además, recuerda que cualquier tipo de writing debe tener una conclusión en la que resumes lo que has expuesto a lo largo del escrito y dejas a tu lector con una reflexión. En este caso, la respuesta a la cuarta y última pregunta del enunciado me dará pie a ello:

Ojo: aquí no te preocupes por la gramática ni los conectores. Simplemente controla que tus ideas siguen un orden y una lógica.

Paso 4: da cohesión a tu review

Ahora que tengo todas las ideas en su lugar, es hora de unirlas y formar los párrafos de mi ejemplo de review  CAE:

Fíjate cómo en este paso he añadido conectores, reference devices y frases para asegurar transiciones adecuadas

• entre cada uno de los párrafos
•  y entre las oraciones al interior de cada párrafo.

Paso 5: pule tu review para atraer al lector

Como puedes ver, mi ejemplo de review CAE está completo, pero es francamente soso. Incluso podríamos decir que no cumple las expectativas de nuestros examinadores.

En primer lugar, el enunciado dice claramente que debes escribir tu reseña para una online magazine. Y mi review parece más un essay de 2.º de la ESO: sus frases y vocabulario predecibles (one of the best series; what I like the most…) no atraerán a mi  target audience . Siempre debes tener en cuenta quién es tu lector y engancharlo desde el primer párrafo.

En segundo lugar, mi review no refleja el control que tengo sobre el léxico C1 en general, y el que se refiere a las performing arts en particular.

Por lo tanto, vamos a hacer algunos cambios y adiciones, que verás en la versión final de la siguiente sección.

Mi ejemplo de review CAE (Cambridge C1 Advanced)

Fíjate en lo siguiente

Como ves, empleo un tono desenfadado: 

• However, some weeks ago … But some weeks ago …
• The one thing I might be a tad less enthusiastic about …

Sin embargo, no soy tan informal como en un correo a un amigo/a: 

• the dizzying pace at which events unfold; 
• you are left with very little time to assimilate the radical changes …

Además, intento atraer a mi lector con imágenes potentes (frases concisas pero descriptivas):

•  This bleak futuristic dystopia has kept me glued to my TV screen ever since.
• … a world where one crisis follows another in the blink of an eye …  

Y con adjetivos y adverbios que reflejan bien mi visión de la serie:

• Its compelling plot … is to blame for this.
• Years and Years is arguably the best series of the decade.

Por último, intento convencer a mis examinadores de que controlo el vocabulario de las performing arts:

• an episode of award-winning Russell T Davies’ Years and Years …
• brilliantly portrayed by Rory Kinnear …

En efecto, los principales lectores a los que debes convencer son tus examinadores. Y con una redacción que siga los mismos pasos que este ejemplo de review CAE , es imposible que no los cautives 😊.

Tips para tu review Cambridge CAE (C1 Advanced)

Por último, aquí algunos consejos para que vayas bien preparado para hacer tu  review.

En primer lugar, ve al examen con la tarea hecha. Es verdad que no puedes predecir si te saldrá una review entre las tareas a elegir, pero por si acaso, ten preparada una batería de posibles reseñas de:

• una película
• un documental
• una obra de teatro
• un concierto o espectáculo en vivo
• un restaurante
• un producto

Con esto me refiero no solo a que tengas claras no solo si te gustan o no y por qué, sino que tengas preparados datos que te pueden ayudar a dar coherencia y credibilidad a tu  review. Por ejemplo:

• nombres de personajes y actores, director, guionista, etc. en el caso de una peli, serie u obra de teatro;
• nombre del escritor y personajes en el caso de un libro o cuento;
• nombres y roles de los artistas principales si reseñas un concierto o espectáculo en vivo;
• en el caso de un restaurante: nombre, ubicación, decoración, platos a destacar…
• en caso de un producto: nombre comercial, prestaciones, ventajas e inconvenientes, precio, etc.

Otra cuestión importante es no entusiasmarte a la hora de justificar tus ideas: t ienes solo 220-260 palabras para escribir tu respuesta. 

Y por último, u sa los folios de borrador y  deja bastante espacio entre líneas para tach ar y hacer cambios. Cuando ya veas que tienes lista tu review, pásala a la hoja de respuestas.

Ten preparada una batería de posibles temas para tu review: un libro, una película, una serie, una obra de teatro, un restaurante, un producto.

• si te gustan o no y por qué;
• sus características principales.

Al escribir tu review Cambridge CAE (C1 Advanced):

• Lee bien el enunciado y responde a las preguntas .
• Planifica la introducción y la conclusión.
• Escribe tus párrafos empleando los conectores y demás elementos de cohesión.
• Da a tu review el tono adecuado  según el lector.
• Atrae a tu lector con un vocabulario y gramática  que transmitan imágenes potentes con pocos elementos.

How to write a proposal? | C1 Advanced (CAE)

• It starts with the relevant title and purpose of the proposal.
• The main content should be divided into sections with a headings and describe a situation (h ere you can include some imaginary questionnaires or surveys that you have carried out to prove your point.)
• It ends with recommendations which are going to persuade the reader and try to prove that you are right.

This may already seem familiar to you because it is quite similar to report writing in C1 Advanced CAE however, there’s one major difference:

Reports – are always written about something that happened in the past for example a survey that you’ve conducted or an excursion that you went on or some kind of panel discussion that you’ve visited.

Proposals – on the other hand, always deal with something in the present/future . The focus of a proposal is always on evaluating a situation as well as making a suggestion or recommendation for the future.

We will use the example topic below:

There are plans to demolish an old and unused building in the town where you are student. You feel that the building should be saved. You decide to write a proposal for the town council explaining why you think the building should be preserved, suggesting what could be done to modernise it and saying how the building could benefit the local people. 

Write your  proposal (around 220 – 260  words)

Step 1: Find the topic points & topic

The first question you should ask yourself is what topic do I have to write about in your proposal? Knowing the topic always gives you a general idea as well as some inspiration for possible vocabulary that you might want to include in your text.

The second question should be what exactly do I have to include in my text?   Here we try to filter out the specific topic points  which we need to address in our writing.

There are plans to demolish an old and unused building in the town where you are student. You feel that the building should be saved . (topic: old building that the city wants to demolish and you want to save it ) You decide to write a proposal for the town council (target reader) explaining why you think the building should be preserved, (topic point) suggesting what could be done to modernise (topic point) it and saying how the building could benefit the local people.   (topic point)

Main key points:

Finally, you should always check who’s going to read your text knowing the reader helps you choose the most appropriate style and register in our example we are writing to the city council as these people are city officials we should use a formal style for our proposal.

Step 2: title + introduction.

The title doesn’t have to be anything special but it is important that you include one as this is a typical feature of a proposal and it could be something like:

Step 5: Final recommendations

In the last section/paragraph of your proposal, we need to conclude our proposal and make our final suggestions (after all that’s the main reason for writing the proposal). Make sure that you include your final suggestions in this last paragraph as well as some persuasive language.

C1 Advanced (CAE) Proposal: Proposal vs Report

Difference between proposal and report.

Proposals are often structured in a similar way to reports. But it’s very important that we make the distinction between the two as you can see from the pictures below.

Report (present/past)

If we follow the sequence here, a report is about something that has already happened and the function of the report is to communicate the information from the past , via you to a superior boss teacher member of the local council.

Proposal (future)

A proposal takes a slightly different sequence, in the sense that, you are going to your superio r directly to suggest something that could have in the future.

Looks quite simple in theory but we have to bear in mind that the use of language for this will be completely different:

• If you’re writing a report quite often you’re going to be using past tenses or present tenses as well as many passive forms
• for a proposal , you’re going to be looking at future tenses and conditionals , as well as a lot of modal verbs (could, would) and some passive forms

Although the difference is not huge the use of language will have to be completely different with respect to the tenses.
